I've recently been watching these very interesting Star Wars video essays on YouTube (yeah I know, a rare breed) and it brings up these comments Lucas has made about how he views Star Wars as almost like a silent film in terms of how important the visuals are to him in comparison to the dialogue. But this essay also points out how important Lucas finds all of the "rhyming" moments in his trilogies and the way he utilizes them to remind you of something else for emotional or thematic reasons. And there's so many of them, both in visuals and in dialogue, and it's interesting to consider how important this is to him, the repetition for a purpose as well as the storytelling through visuals above everything else and then to look at Star Wars since the Prequels came out and realize how little has really been able to match up to those ideals since then.
The ONLY thing that's come out since the Prequels that I think really hits these two things the same way is, in fact, Andor. One of the things I noticed about the way people discussed Andor as it was airing in a way I haven't really seen for any of the other shows or films was the visual SYMBOLOGY. So many times I saw people noticing the Imperial cog everywhere, from the aerial shot of Narkina 5 as the prisoners escape to the architecture of Mon Mothma's house. There were people picking up on the use of items in Luthen's shop that are familiar from other things to give this idea that Luthen is from another time, he's attempting to preserve this world he lost, that if you're not looking closely enough you won't notice what he's really saying or doing with this shop. The color choices for the different locations and people got analyzed because the people involved spoke about how they intentionally utilized color to SEND A MESSAGE about the characters and the world. We know that the people who made the costumes and sets really worked hard to treat Star Wars almost like a period drama and study the history of the franchise as if it were a real place so that the things they came up with felt like they belonged in this world everyone knows so well even if it's completely new. And of course there were all of the myriad references to things from Rogue One, the constant repetition of "climb", the sunset on the beach, etc.
Nearly EVERY SHOT in this show was created with so much intention behind it in order to say something meaningful about the characters, the world, this specific story they're in, and the overall saga of Star Wars itself. It's insane how much greater impact this show was able to achieve through the incredibly careful usage of visual symbols and thematic repetitions, much like Lucas did before them. It feels like they didn't just study the history of the galaxy far far away, but they studied the history of STAR WARS and what Lucas was trying to do and say with this story. They peeled back his onion a bit more and were able to create something that really has that same visual feel even when it's not created for a child audience. It also is experimenting with its narrative style through its structure and through Cassian's character being allowed to be somewhat more reactive than proactive, and while that didn't work for everyone, it does feel like it's following in Lucas's footsteps of experimentation through Star Wars. Push the boundaries of what Star Wars is and can be and what you can say with it.
But this only works because they peeled the onion back enough to TRULY understand all of the messages Lucas was sending with it. They got the heart of Star Wars and despite its lack of space wizards, despite the lack of most major characters in the Saga, this was a show that honestly got the message more than just about anything else Star Wars has put out since the Prequels. The choices between selflessness and selfishness, the themes about how you always HAVE to make a choice even when it feels like you don't have any (sometimes ESPECIALLY when it feels like you don't have any), and how important it is to make sure to choose the path of compassion above everything else. The themes of connection to others, the symbiotic circle and the impact even the smallest person can have on world around them, it's RIGHT THERE and it's CENTRAL to Andor's storyline.
So yes, it experiments a little with narrative structure, but it's possibly the most Star Wars thing to exist Revenge of the Sith because it honestly truly GETS what Star Wars was about, both in its themes and in its filmmaking. A lot of people said that Andor didn't feel like Star Wars to them, usually because of the lack of space wizards and the fact that it's not a story aimed at children. But to me, Andor is EXACTLY what Star Wars is and has always been. They're stretching the boundaries of what Star Wars can be, but it's saying the exact same things Star Wars has always said, it's just saying it slightly differently. This doesn't feel like fanfiction to me, not really. Unlike things like the Mandoverse or the books, Andor isn't just taking some of the toys out of the sandbox and going to play with them somewhere else. Andor is IN that sandbox. It's building a slightly different sandcastle, but it's still within the sandbox, using the same sand that Lucas did.
#star wars#andor#star wars andor#i GET why some people feel like andor isn't star wars#but quite honestly that feels like not just a superficial reading of andor but a superficial reading of star wars as a whole#the only other show to come anywhere near andor's level was the obi-wan kenobi show#there's tons of visuals that are intended to link back to both the pt and the ot#from obi-wan and leia's costumes to things like the fire obi-wan is burned in and that flashback scene#i'm placing andor above owk still because i think andor takes it an extra level higher but owk is also in that sandbox#owk just got stuck with the fucking volume and the disadvantage of going from a movie to a miniseries#but it did far better with those disadvantages than just about anyone else and still told a VERY star wars style story#the fact that it feels like the prequels is exactly why everyone hated it#and it's exactly why i loved it and think it's the 2nd best thing to come out of star wars since rots#i'll give 3rd place to rebels since it tries once or twice to do some visual and dialogue repetition#but those kinds of things aren't something i see analyzed about rebels all that much tbh#everything else is just fanfic that made a profit#some of it is really BAD fanfic that thinks a cameo is the same as a visual motif. it's not. they suck. stop doing them.

Hello itâs me again! Itâs been a while, I hope youâve been doing okay. I recently have been reading through a lot of angst to comfort and I have an idea for a request!
May I request an Ike fic where reader is a liver in NIJISANJI and has a crush on Ike but knows they have no chance with him. Then one day reader accidentally spills their feelings to Ike and Ike comforts them after hearing about readers feelings?
I hope youâre not tired of me requesting Ike fics (ily him to much) and I hope you have a good day/night! <3
-đď¸
stars above your skin
oh đ we're really in it now
how long have i had this request in my inbox? early march? and now exactly one day after blue light dropped, i give you a ~19.5k word ike fic. much love and effort has gone into this one, only seconded by the massive amounts of brainrot.
so yeah, i'm not tired of ike requests. i'm literally a quilldren that writes fanfic. this is the opposite of a problem
in fact this might be one of my favorite things i've written... the second half is such a good bedtime story for me...!
this is going to get NASTY to read on tumblrâas in my site is lagging so hard just typing these a/n notes. so i'm going to remind you all that not only is liking/reblogging recommended to keep track of this fic, but also that i have an ao3 account (same name as url but without dashsince it's much more accessible than tumblr for long fic. i recommend reading on tumblr if you can because of some formatting but to each their own!
hereâs a funny story about this fic. i was working on it while a bunch of people sat behind me, you see, and one of my greatest irrational fears is that people sitting behind me will be able to see my laptop screen and laugh at what iâm writingâŚ! and with these requests i usually title them the fandom name and my name, and a short phrase about the request, and this one was âworkplace romanceâ, and i just got so afraid right then and there i changed it to the first thing i could think of, based off a clip i saw of pomu, selen, aia and doppioâŚ!! and thatâs why the wip doc is titled ânijisanji 4402 - pliskinâ, and why i will always refer to this fic as "pliskin" much more than the actual title
by the way hereâs a cover of iris that was pretty fitting for this fic. youâll know when to play it. enjoy

There are dozens of these videos on YouTube, and never have you come across the same one twice. You would know. You have a bad habit of clicking on them.Â
After all, theyâre labeled with your name on them, and right next to it, Ike Eveland. You are smart enough to recognize itâs not worth your time and just another compilation of the same moments and fans trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, but your heart says otherwise. To be fair, the compilations were a much more recent development than the one you hid under lock and key.Â
When you first joined Nijisanji, some of your senpais sent you messages full of greetings and offers to help you get on your feet as a streamer. Ike was one of those senpais, and whenever you popped into voice calls just to hang out, he was easy to talk to, like an old friend. Naturally, a fast friendship formed, and when you debuted, he was one of the first people you collabed with- and the one with the best reception. Your new fans (âBookworms,â they called themselves, after your name Reader) loved how well your humor bounced off each other, and when weeks passed and you announced another collab on your schedule with Ike, your Bookworms rejoiced.Â
Even when you werenât working, you would still talk to him. He told you about his homeland in the past and his novels, both released and unpublished. He was a storyteller even when he was talking about something as minute as making a sandwich, and whenever you brought up your past and interests, he was an excellent listener. You had your differences, but he always knew what questions to ask so he could understand you better, and you loved the opportunity to ramble.Â
It had been nearly three months since you debuted, and four if you count the day you were officially hired and began to build yourself as a streamer. Whenever you look at the endlessly long text history between you and Ike, you have to wonder: is it normal to feel so connected to someone youâve only known for three-maybe-four months?Â
Youâre not an idiot. You arenât about to say Ike is the most important thing in the world to you, but he gets pretty damn close. That terrifies you. You shouldnât be so attached to someone you barely know.Â
But then again, you trust Ike. Heâs opened up to you about things he would never say to others, and he keeps your secrets buried in the grave. Youâve lost count of how much advice heâs given you, but youâve never forgotten a single one, and whenever you feel lost about something you know you can count on him to help you out.Â
You grimace, sip out of your drinking glass, and press âplayâ on the next compilation.Â
A cute intro plays with the clipperâs name. Above it are the words Pen and Paper, surrounded by puffy pink hearts.Â
That was the duo name between you and Ike, but "ship name" was more accurate among fanwork.
You werenât exactly unaware about it. Weeks ago, you were surfing Twitter and the siteâs algorithm granted you your introduction into Pen and Paper. This was shortly after your first collab with Ike, and after you established your shipping rules with your audience (âIâm fine with anything, as long as the other liver is okay with it!â, you proclaimed, totally oblivious to how soon that would blow up in your face). The fanartist posted a messy black-and-white sketch, but you could make out the pattern of Ikeâs scarf wrapped around you and him at the same time, forcing your bodies into close proximity with averted eyes and dusty blushes.Â
You appreciated the fanartistâs passion and skill, but the thought of you and Ike as an item sunk in your chest like you swallowed a rock. You swiped past. You went back to your scrolling, found some good thumbnails, and retweeted some cute solo fanart, but before the week ended, you made a private account with a fake name and staked out the tags for Pen and Paper to follow that fanartist.
Damn fanartist. You tried to deny it, and told yourself that you followed their art because you liked the style. But their account was full of ship art, and when Twitter gave you similar users that all worked under the hashtag, you had to face facts. If you wanted to look at it optimistically, at least you figured it out early on before anything had the chance to sour while you were still blissfully ignorant of yourself; even then, that doesnât make it any harder than it already is.
Besides all the texts, the meetings, the schedules and events, and then including the streams and collabs and the art and the fandomâŚÂ
âWhy?â You ask out loud in the silence of your room. âWhy did I have to fall for my coworker?â
And with audiences of over hundreds of people watching you fall for him, nonetheless!
Itâs irritating. You have a job that keeps you motivated to work hard. Itâs given you a dedicated fanbase, rare opportunities, and coworkers you all recognize as your friends. Really, finding someone to care for because of it should be a blessing, but itâs such a headache. What if your fanbases get jealous, or even worse, outright hate it? Would you be able to keep up a relationship when you and Ike are dedicated to your careers and streams? Why are you even thinking like this? You scold yourself. Thereâs no way this would ever work out. Itâs all fantasy and smoke and mirrors, because fandoms love love. Shipping is never a reflection of the streamers, just the characters you play. Youâre delusional if you think your stupid crush could actually go anywhere.
But fandoms love love. The only comfort you have is being able to pretend something could happen. The ship art is a lie, and so are the fanfics, and the clippers that tag their videos as Pen and Paper are just here for a possibility that never could happen.
The compilation is full of little hints and teases, and if you were being honest with yourself, most of it was more like two friends getting along than actual flirting. But you didnât trust yourself to see your clumsiness for what it is when Ikeâs little laughs are like music to your ears.Â
Damage control, you tell yourself. Itâs like studying how you play your favorite games. You can pinpoint where you stumble and leave yourself open for attack in Apex, Smash, even Crab Game, and then amend those mistakes the next time you pick up the game. Real life should be no different. Just stop acting so dorky all the time by finding moments of dork in your VODs and avoid them next time you talk to Ike.
This clip was from your second collab with Ike. Captions floated along the bottom of the screen. Ike's captions were in his signature blue.
IKE: You know, thereâs a lot of content about us two as a duo.
READER: They call us Pen and Paper, right?
IKE: Yeah, my art tag is flooded with art of the both of us.Â
READER: Oh my God, look at the chat. Mineâs full of people saying they love us together.Â
IKE: Aww, thanks, Quilldren! Iâm happy I can play with Reader too.Â
READER: Thank you, Bookworms; thank you, Quilldren. Hey, thereâs a lot more overlap than I expected.
IKE: Theyâre like Bookdren.
READER: Or Quillworms.
IKE: Quillworms, that sounds way better. Theyâre like our children.
READER: www
IKE: www
Never fucking mind about acting so dorky all the time. You kick yourself for bringing up Pen and Paper, and your giggly laugh. You hate it. A neon sign above your head that says âSIMPâ would be less obvious than that stupid schoolkid laugh.
But Ikeâs laughter is music, back in the moment and now as you revisit it, and his modelâs eyes squint with a wide smile.
He really is an amazing man. If you didnât know him as well as you do, youâd think heâs perfect. But youâve seen him in moments of vulnerability, the parts of himself that never shows through on stream and even rarer among his friends. Through it all he manages to keep going, and you admire him so much for sticking to his guns even when heâs expressed all his doubts about himself. The fact that he trusts you enough to let his guard down only adds to how honored you are to know him, and at the same time, the fact that thereâs so much trust between you two just makes you feel worse for having a crush on him. You hate keeping secrets like this when you let Ike read you like an open book for everything else, and even just wishing you were something more to him feels like a betrayal of all that trust. You wish you could just be satisfied to know him.
The compilation continues. The next clip is a totsu Fall Guys collab hosted by Fulgur Ovid that you and Ike joined in on. Fuuchan got eliminated early in the match, and spectated on you while the other livers ran around Roll On with players tugging them this way and that.Â
You moved around the rotating levels at the perfect sweet spot between two rings, and balanced at the top of the roll as the slime level slowly rose.
A longer wall approached, so you shuffled from one level to another, but another player grabbed your bean avatar and dragged you along to the wall even as you yelled out in panic on Discord. You smashed your keys to struggle, but they had an advantage, and it was clear the wall would push you down to the slime for an impending elimination.
That is, until a familiar Miku bean grabbed the other side of your avatar, and pulled the other way towards the ring that would save your life. Resigned, your attacker backed off and barely dodged out of the way while Ikeâs Miku bean brought you back to safety.
The other two livers in the game were too noisy to notice you. Fuuchan was commentating every move you made, and when Ike saved you, he said, âIke coming in clutch, letâs fucking go.â
Your recorded self didnât hear him at all, though. You swooned, âIke, my hero!â
Meanwhile in the present, you wanted to puke. You meant for that to sound like an over-the-top joke, but you crush is getting so serious that it sounds less like a bit and more like how you gush about him in private.Â
At least Fuuchanâs audio was louder than everyone else, since he was the host, and the other two livers were preoccupied with their own game to notice your lovey-dovey tone and how Ike laughed music at you. It was bad enough clippers transcribed your words in captions, but you werenât sure how you would handle it if those three picked up on you and your dumb crush. The less that know about your workplace romance, the better.
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
âReader,â Aia coos. Even with audio only, you could tell her eyes were sparkling. âYou didnât tell me you had a workplace romance!â
Well, so much for that plan. You froze over. âWho told you that?â
Mika answers way too quickly. âItâs Albanâs fault.â
âFuck off, Mika, you brought it up first!â
âYou said it though!â
Man, you were already starting to regret joining VC today. You finished your offline work a lot faster than expected, so when you realized that three of your close friends in the company were all online in VC together while Alban privately streamed a rhythm game, you figured you would join the call while you prepared dinner.Â
But if that was your greeting, you needed to mentally prepare for the wild interrogation you were about to experience. At least Aia, despite her love for drama, knew how to navigate these sorts of things delicately. And you donât mean to call Mika and Alban bad friendsâthey were the exact opposite, in factâbut they were much nosier than Aia ever came across.
âOkay, but Reader just asked who leaked it, and didnât deny it,â Aia says. âSo that means it must be true!â
Scratch that. Aia is the worst out of all of them.
âI hate you guys. No hello or anything, just gossip about my love life,â you lament.
She gasps, and if her eyes were sparkling before, then roses bloomed around her as she spoke. âItâs love?â
Mika shrieks like a banshee. âOh hell no, youâre in love and you didnât tell us?!â
âItâs not love. Itâs nothing!â
âNah-uh, Reader, no running away from it, we know,â Alban says. âBetter to just get it all out in the open than pretend like nothingâs up.â
âYouâre just saying that because you want to snoop.â
âIâm being serious. Keeping stuff bottled up deteriorates you, especially when loveâs involved.â He missed a note. âShit. And yeah, okay, I want some gossip, but I have a point and you know it.â
âFuck you.â
âFuck you, I blew a full combo just to say that!â
âCan I add? In case you forgot, Reader, weâre all in the same company,â Mika says. âSure, I might be in a different branch, but who knows? Maybe we can help.â
âAnd fuck you too.â You sigh in defeat. As vitriolic as your shared humor was, these three were still some of your best friends, and you know they donât mean any harm. âUgh, I hate this. This is confidential information. Like, CIA levels of confidential. If I tell you guys, you canât tell a single soul about it. Understand?â
The three all chime in agreement. And unfortunately, you trust them. You take advantage of your coworkers swearing themselves to secrecy to hype yourself up and just rip off the band-aid. âItâs Ike.â
âWe know.â
âWhat the hell do you mean, you know?!â
âItâs obvious,â Aia says. Your heart hammers in your chest. Then she sputters for a moment, like she realized she mightâve hit a soft spot. âWell, you have to focus on it to see it, but once you see it, itâs hard to ignore. You two go well together.â
Alban pitches in. âAgreed. Iâm not even gonna be subtle about it, you and Ike have great chemistry. Iâm happy for you two.â
âOkay, I guess.â Your eyes drift away from your prepared ingredients to the corner of your kitchen. âBut I donât know. Are you sure? Because I feel like I always act like an idiot whenever Iâm around him. And I doubt heâd ever feel the same way.â
âWait.â Aia pauses. âYouâre⌠not dating?â
âNo. Just a crush. Not love, not dating, nothing. And itâs never going to be anything more than that because itâs just a big stupid crush on my coworker, who doesnât even live close enough to visit, and this is all a recipe for disaster.â
She doesnât say anything about that. Actually, none of them do. Even Alban pressed pause on his game, and the Discord stream went motionless as your words sunk in.Â
Mika is the one to break the silence. âYouâre shitting me.â
âThatâs the truth. Happy?â
âNo, like, youâre shitting me, thereâs no way.â
âMikaaa.â Alban drags out her name as he scolds her.Â
âHey, Iâm just saying, thatâs crazy, especially sinceââ
âDonât tell Reader that!â
âTell me what?âÂ
âWe thought you were already a thing. You know, dating, in a relationship, whatever,â Mika clarifies. It hits you like a punch to the gut. âOr at least that you had something going on, and kept it secret so it wouldnât be awkward for everyone else to work with you two. Which, by the way, weâre all chill with, so if, hypothetically, you decided to hypothetically go for it, we would hypothetically cheer you on and set off hypothetical fireworks. Iâd rent a food truck.â
Alban resumes his game. âYeah, what she said. Go get that hypothetical novelist bussy.â
âDonât hypothetically talk about my brother like that.â
âYouâre sure this is okay?â You ask. âMika, I know you and Ike are close. This isnât going to make anything weird, is it?â
âYouâre fine, Reader. If I had problems, I wouldâve cornered you and threatened you over text ages ago when I figured it out.â
âThatâs another thing. How did you guys know?â
Aia pipes up first. âI know I said it was obvious, but I think thatâs just because we know each other since weâre good friends. You two just go together, you know? Itâs hard to explain, but whenever Reader and Ike-senpai are in the same room you think, âthose two would be cute,â and then you realize they are cute, right there in the moment. And you talk a lot faster on stream whenever youâre both on the same page. Almost as fast as me.â
âPlus, itâs really common to see both of you on VC at the same time, and youâre always happy whenever he shows up,â Mika affirms. âAlban says whenever one of you enters the call the other is soon to follow.âÂ
âItâs true. You talk fast whenever you talk to him on VC too, not just stream. And your laugh kind of changes?â
âDammit, I knew my laugh was my tell. This sucks. This seriously sucks.â
âIt might not be all that bad,â Mika says. âWho knows, maybe things might end up better than you expect. You should tell him.â
âNo way,â you fire back. âThere no way heâd actually reciprocate. And I know you guys are fine with me asking, but Ike himself is just going to reject me, and itâs going to be awkward, and literally everyone in the company who has ever talked to us will be able to tell somethingâs up.â
âThey wonât be weird,â Aia insists. âWe wonât, either, and Ike-senpai is a good guy. Even if it doesnât work out, he wouldnât leave you out to dry like that.â
âYou donât know. None of you have ever been in this situation.â
âThatâs true, but thereâs always a chance.â
âIf you ask me, it sounds more like youâre afraid of what you think would happen instead of what rationally would,â Alban says. Heâs still laser-focused on his game. âI dunno. If youâre really set on getting over it, then go ahead and ignore it, but thatâs just going to eat at you for who knows how long before your crush starts to fade.â
âWell, I didnât ask.â
âFine. Forget I said anything.â
You regret the acidic tone in your voice the second you said it, but Alban was off in his own world of music. Heâd tell you if he had a problem with how you spoke to him, but you still feel gross about your knee-jerk reaction.Â
Youâre just⌠defensive. Yep, thatâs the word. Whenever youâre this interested in someone, you put your walls up and protect yourself from letting anyone worm through and hit a weak point.Â
Aia hums like an analyst. âJust keep it in mind, Reader. Not everything is out to get you.â
You know your friends just wanted the best for you, but things just arenât as simple as theyâd like to imagine it. Itâs none of their business, anyways. It was pure coincidence that they figured out your thoughts on Ike, and that means none of them have any real authority to advise you on your love life.
âI think weâre done talking about this,â you assert.
âWell, you heard âem. Pack it up, showâs over.â Mika changed the subject. âHey, did you guys know if you try to break open a freshly boiled egg, it explodes?â
Alban slams his hands on his keyboard so loudly that you hear the switches over his noise suppression. The stream goes from a string of Awesome! notes to nothing but misses as he abandons the game. âYES. Yes, actually, I DO know.â
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
âMEAT! WANTS MEAT! WANTS MEAT! MEAT!â
âAAAAAAAAHHHH!â
The stream is to the birds. Fuck that noise. Godspeed to the Bookworms, theyâll need it, but not nearly as much as you.Â
When you were settling on a schedule, the last undecided spot for the week was Fridayâs stream. That simply wouldnât do. Friday nights kick off the weekend, and the break from school and work is prime time for a wide audience, so pretty much everyone in Nijisanji reserves their juiciest streams for the weekend. Youâre no exception.
âŚExcept for the fact that you didnât have a clue about what to do for Fridayâs stream. One Twitter poll and conveniently timed Steam sale later, you published your schedule with a game your fans voted on: Outlast.
You walked in knowing it would be a horror game, and you figured it would be fine. After all, youâve played games from Chillaâs Art before, and a few quirky indie psychological releases here and there. You wouldnât call yourself a stone-faced horror lover that can keep a straight face at anything, but aside from a few creepy moments in those game, youâve kept your cool relatively well.Â
Outlast threw all that out the window. You realized almost immediately that you had no idea how to handle the primal fear of the chase.Â
Footsteps pound against a metal floor. You plead for help in the emptiness of your home as you smash the controls, as if that would make your character move the cabinet over the door any faster. Screams resonate in tune between you and the chained man in the room with you, and all the while, the howling of your pursuer grows louder and louder as he gets closer.
You finally uncover the door and dash through. Tremors run though all your thoughts while your heart beats overtime.Â
You still havenât gotten used to all the jumpscares, even though youâre at the edge of your seat and ready to start running yourself. A fork in the road approaches, and when you start off one direction, youâre greeted by a bloodied man in the distance. âAAAHH!â
Faster than light, you slam the key to the other hall and book it. You spot a new storage container to shove in front of the door just in time for text to appear on the screen: Look for pushable objects to block doors.
âNo shit, why wouldnât you tell me that before, oh my God, aaaaah!â The screamsâfrom both the voice actors and your own criesâgrate against your eardrums while chase music thunders in-between the gasps for air.Â
As you grab the container and start to push, you mash the pause button. When the menu appears, you lean back in your chair and run your hands over your face. Your model pouts cutely while the real you whimpers. The mic barely picks it up.
You take a breath before groaning in fear and pain. âGuys. I donât think I can do thisâŚâ Another groan as you trail off. âThis game is so much. Give me a second.â
As you raise yourself back from your chair, itâs with a slump forward. Your chat is full of headpat emotes and hearts in your color, along with some quick words of courage. A few are recommending you take a break. âThanks, Bookworms. Iâm so afraid, but Iâm committed and I donât want to just leave it here.â
Your eyes flutter closed as you take a sip of water to clear your head. The cold drink startles you out of the dingy asylum atmosphere, but the screaming still lingers between your ears. âYou know what? Who else is online right now? Maybe I need someone in VC to hold me to this.â
The emojis in chat slowly patter out as your viewers go back to text. Looks like most of your Bookworms like the idea of calling someone else while you stream the game. Some of their messages catch your eye.Â
gatamiizuus: you can call ike :ReaderHeadpat:Â
messXed-up!: ike!!
lunasmortas: what about ike?
A few more chats mention Ike, and while usually youâd be irritated they mentioned another liver out of the blue, your shoulders still relax at the sight of his name. âWait, Ike? Is Ike here?â
You scroll back in the chat history, and search for any mod messages. Sure enough, barely a minute ago while you were still being chased:
Ike Eveland ăNIJISANJI ENă â : GANBARE!
You cling onto that message like a lifeline. Ike is familiar. Ike is comforting. And most importantly, Ike would never call you a pussy.
Chat floods over with his name while you check the official Nijisanji Discord server. Almost everyone in Nijisanji sets their status to offline by default, and Ike is one of them, but you still scan through the member list anyways, praying a little green indicator will light up by his icon.
His status doesnât change, but before you can even click on his profile, your Direct Messages tab gains a notification. He just messaged you.
Ike Eveland: Watching your stream right now
Ike Eveland: Are you okay?
You exhale. Ike is the most dependable guy you know, even when itâs pure coincidence he was watching your stream while you freaked out.Â
With your heart still in your throat, you respond.
Me: uuuuuuugh i guess
Me: the game is really scary
Me: i donât want to cancel the stream but i donât think i can play it by myself đ
Ike Eveland: 𫠠  | đŤ 1 |
Ike Eveland: Would you feel better if I called you?
Me: i was just about to ask    | đ 1 |
Me: you donât have to if you donât want to tho!! i donât want to be a nuisance lol
Ike Eveland: Donât worry I offered to!
Ike Eveland started a voice call.
âIkeee!â The second the call starts, all your restraint goes forgotten. âIke, I was so scared!â
You babble on about everything youâve endured up to this point: the gore, the grime, and the patients in the asylum that hunt you like animals.Â
âIâm here, itâs alright now,â he assures you. âIâm here, okay? Take your time, youâre safe.â
âYeah, I know. Iâm relieved. But it was so scary.â You sink and bury yourself in the collar of your shirt. âYouâve streamed this before, and kept a cool head the entire time, right? How do you do it?â
âWell, it wasnât my first time playing, for starters. Everyone gets freaked out at first. Itâs a horror game, Reader, itâs okay to react to it. I remember the first time I played it, it scared me so bad I had to quit after half an hour.â He giggles a bit at himself. The sound is comforting. âThat was a few years ago. I think I had nightmares about it, until I realized I needed to know the rest of the story. â
Your voice is small. âThat was really brave of you.â
âI avoided it for days. I doubt thatâs brave.â
âItâs braver than calling someone just to get the guts to play the game.â
âHey, donât put my friend Reader down just to bring me up.â He keeps his tone light to let you know youâre allowed to smile. âBeing able to face your fears is plenty on its own, and you shouldnât be devaluing that. How long have you been at it?â
âA little over two hours?â You glance at the stream monitor, and ignore the chat as much as you can. You still register the hearts in your color and his signature blue. âI donât know. I did a lot of pausing, too, so itâs probably less than thatâŚâ
âBut you were still able to stream for that long. Remember, I could only play for thirty minutes during my first time! Youâre stronger than you think you are.â
You avert your eyes from your stream setup. You feel painfully seen, but the chat is nothing to you. âDoesnât feel like it.â
âThen Iâll be here to remind you. Is that okay?â
âIâd like that.â You return to the screen, and in the darkness of the blurred labyrinth, you see your reflection stare back. Your hair is disheveled from how you kept thrashing around in reaction to the game and your shoulders are high with tension, but only now did you realize how the corners of your lips rose after the call started. Ike really got to you. âThank you, Ike, youâre so considerate. I appreciate you a lot. Youâre a really good guy.â
He chuckles slowly, soft like a blanket. Your shoulders ease. Ikeâs words are just as soft, and if you didnât know any better, youâd think heâs nervous too. âHaha, um. Yeah. Thank you?â He doesnât take compliments well, but theyâre true, and you hope he knows it as well as you do. He clears his throat. âAhem. Um, how are you feeling?â
âNot great, but better. I want to try again.â
âYouâve got this, Reader, you can do it.â Ike is still quiet, but enthusiastic. âYou can do it!â
You go shaky. âOkay, okay, okay, okay, okay.â
But you still press Return To Game.
And when you scream barely five seconds later, Ike is still calm, and you hone in on his voice as you persevere.

Just as you go to bed, you realize that you basically just made a fool of yourself in front of your crush by getting scared at a game heâs already conquered.Â
You slam a pillow over your face and groan.

Ike lands an all-out attack just in time to check the chat and the swarm of viewers that just joined. âOh, Reader! Thank you for the raid, itâs good to see you! Welcome, everybody.â
Reader ăNIJISANJI ENă â : take care of my bookworms for me? iâm getting milk
âOf course. Theyâre our Quillworms, after all.â You go fuzzy. He remembered the fan name! âHave a good break, Reader! Rest well.â
Reader ăNIJISANJI ENă â : đ
It was the end of the week, and the stream you just finished was the last on your schedule. You announced a few days ago that you would take a break for a little more than two weeks so you could catch up on offline work as well as rest, and the Bookworms sent you off with a lot of love. Itâll be hard for some of your diehard fans, but youâre sure theyâll manage. You have a feeling itâll be easier than they expect.Â
âSpeaking of breaks, I havenât finished my schedule yet. I think Iâll wait a day or two to post it.â The stream cracks in red and black as Ikeâs party in Persona 5 Royal clobbers the enemy Shadows. Monsters bleed out behind the protagonistâs cocky smirk. âIâll be offline for the next two days, so Iâll have some time to think about it.â
Ike mashes through the battle results, and sets back off into exploring the palace. His stream fades into background noise as you get back to the task at hand.Â
You sent a few messages to some of your other coworkers regarding your break. Next was finishing some paperwork for management, and reaching out to others that needed access to the files. Sure, your time off was for offline work, but the work you had to get done would only take an afternoon at most. You wanted to meet even the far-off deadlines as soon as possible so you could be properly free for the rest of your vacation.
By the time you finished your paperwork, your coworkers were able to respond to you. A group chat full of other livers had a new response every minute about the next two weeks, and Aia sent you a QR code that would let you save some time and money on your flight.Â
Ike ended yet another super-long P5R stream just a few minutes after you grabbed all your luggage, got to the airport, and made it to your terminal. You had some time to kill, but you were sick of the headphones over your ears.
Not to mention, you were waiting for the fans to catch up on the real reason why you were on break.
Curiously, you log into your private Twitterâyou donât plan to interact with anything but youâre always paranoid about your online presenceâand start searching for the code words fans think Vtubers have no idea about. Symbols replace letters and names morph into sounds while emojis speak volumes. Â
The Stargazers donât mention it at all. Thatâs to be expected, after all. Their oshi goes on break often, so nothing seems too out of the ordinary. Besides, you wouldnât put it past them to have even more intricate subtweets than what youâre looking for.
Only a few of Ninaâs Honeybunnies put the pieces together at first, but then you check Quilldren subtweets. As it turns out, when Ike mentioned heâd be taking a few days off, a few of his fans noticed how Nina was going to be offline at the same time, and a smaller fraction of those compared how Mika had yet to release a schedule.Â
Underneath your face mask, you smile. With the career being dependent on both anonymity and your voice, you wore a nondescript black mask through the entire airport in case someone recognized you, just as well as to hide the tiny giggle that always bubbles up whenever you watch your fans scramble around theorizing. They donât have all the pieces, after all. None of the Aiadmirers nor the Renvaders even considered it.
Theyâll figure it out in time nonetheless. Uki and Nina are close to landing, and Aia was the first to disembark her plane. The rest of your friends are set to arrive after you, and besides, Vox should be ending his last stream of the week right now. Youâre sure the Kindred will start plotting in the next hour, provided their oshi didnât give them too big of a hint about his plans for the next week as heâs known to do.
You board your plane and settle into your seat, ready to nap the flight away. Youâll need the rest, after all. Itâs about time you join an off-collab.
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
Nina doesnât even get the chance to look away from her phone before she gets a rush of replies on her first voice tweet.
She doesnât bother to read them anyways. Sheâs too busy howling out the lyrics to âWannabe.â
Itâll be hard to discern all the voices. Ikeâs high range is always easy to pick out, but Vox blends in as a bass, and you can always hear Mikaâs grin through her singing. Ren and Aia are the furthest from the phone, and as loud as they sing, theyâre still drowned out along with you, Uki, and Nina herself.
Mika chooses the wrong time to look around the karaoke booth. While Aia sings passionately about what she wants (what she really, really wants), her body language crumples and rises like an electrocuted high school theater kid. The ghost has a hiccuping, sweeping laugh that overpowers half of the singers, and then Aia snorts at herself when Mika covers her mouth, which gets Vox to snort even louder, and before you know it, itâs just Uki and Nina doing their damndest not to break. Even then, Ninaâs voice wavers along to the Spice Girls as she resists a laugh, and Ukiâs eyes are squeezed shut smiling.
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
The bar stool slides out from the counter so quietly that you wonder if the Airbnb owner knew just how handy it would be for a house full of streamers on vacation. You lean forward while Mika tells a story about how she, Aia, Ren and you went out for a coffee run, and crossed paths with some teenagers with matching Iluna keychains on their backpacks.Â
Speaking of Iluna, their represents sat together on the couch. Aia set her plate and fork on the coffee table, not a single pool of sauce left over from the pasta dinner Vox and Uki prepared together. Somehow Ren made enough room in his luggage to bring along a teal ukulele, and idly strums along. Uki sits between Ren and the armrest, swirling the last of his pasta between his fork.
Across from them, Vox and Nina took ownership of two plush chairs that could only fit one person each. Each chair was next to a corner table, and they stacked their plates on top of one another to make room for a jug of orange juice and two cocktail glasses. Ike took a bottle of rum and poured it into his soda, then slid it back to the corner table before pulling up the bar stool next to you.Â
âIt was like, one of them had a clear phone case and held it out to show the others a video,â Mika says. She perched on top of the counter itself, next to her travel microphone and the second-nastiest kitchen stream setup youâve ever seen. She was no Scarle, but so many wires stretched across the island and along the way that it was just easier for her to climb onto the polished granite to keep an eye on the chat. âSmack-dab in the center was a PNG of Vox. And then a bunch of tinier Voxes around it. And hereâs how you know itâs bad, you could see the color of the phone itself through the case because itâs clear, right? It was red. Red! Thatâs commitment!â
âIâm telling you, Mika, thereâs no way they got a red phone just because of Vox,â Aia says. âThatâs got to be a coincidence.â
Vox hums into his glass. âNo, they absolutely did. You mean to tell me your fans donât spoil you rotten and buy new phones just because theyâre your color?â
âMy color is white, Vox, like every phone ever is my color!â
âStill, Iâve never seen Aia go so quiet so fast.â Renâs ukulele twangs as he grins. His fangs were just as prominent in real life. âIt was awesome.â
âIt was scary, but funny,â you say. âWe saw the Vox case and the Iluna keychains, and all of us just went silent. And we all had masks, too, so it was like, one moment you could hear Renâs fuckboy laugh, and the second we saw the case, we all put up our masks and went quieter than the grave.â
Ren palms the neck of the ukulele and mutes the chord in mock offense. âHey! Iâm not a fuckboy!â
âDidnât say you were, but if you want to out yourself like that, be my guest. Theyâd chop off your horns and sell them like Kyo.â
âOne of them had an Aster keychain.â Ren bitterly resumes playing. Uki sets his plate on the table and drapes himself over the alienâs shoulder as he opened up his phone to check the off-collabâs live tag. The stream was supposed to be a live Q&A, but was so easy to talk to everyone that the questions often turned into conversation before someone remembered the stream. âIf Aia or I said anything, weâd be fucked.â
âImagine how fucked we wouldâve been if Vox woke up in time to go with us,â you say.
Ike snickers. âIs it bad that I wouldâve paid money to see that?â
The two Luxiem members get into a playful argument over who would win in a fight: all the effort Nijisanji and its employees put into protecting their privacy, or one silly phone case. Renâs riffing turns into a simple rendition of âIrisâ and Nina hums along from across the living room. The ukulele is slow and unique enough to not be mistaken for the original, but you wonder if those two would be able to avoid copyright entirely.
Nonetheless, the vibe is comfortable. Youâre miles away from home, but in a room with some of your closest friends in the world, itâs like you never left. Truthfully, itâs more like youâve finally found your place. The music just feels right, like it was written for this moment, and Aia leans back into the couch while Nina sways in her seat to the jaunty little ukulele. Ren looks as cheery as his instrument sounds, especially with a peaceful Uki nuzzled up to him.Â
While Ike and Vox go at it, Mika props her chin up with both hands and watches them like a reality TV show. Thereâs a glint in Voxâs eyes as Ike drums up a snide response, the only sane man to the demonâs goofiness. He brings his rum and coke to his lips like punctuation, a silent so, what? hidden in the boozy soda.Â
Vox knows how to run his mouth, and he launches into one of his patented anecdotes. While all eyes are on the demon and the chat hones in on his voice, you focus on how Ike tilts his head up to drink. His neck stretches out from the collar of his black band tee, and with each sip, his Adamâs apple bobs.Â
Youâve always thought he was good-looking on stream, but heâs gorgeous in person, all long lines and graceful features, and cameras canât capture the tiny little freckles drizzled down the back of his neck. You didnât even know he had freckles. It was only after you saw him for the first time that you noticed pale, reddish dots all over his nose and cheeks, fading out by his temples and the arch of his lips. Spending the day walking around in the sun from place to place revealed more whenever the wind flicked his jacket collar out right. They scatter at his nape, right below the blue tips of his hair, and meet one another further down his back, or so youâd presume. Without the jacket, you can catch marks spread out along his arms with distance between one another, and his shirt sleeve starts right where the freckles cluster together. You can only imagine how far down they go.
You avert your eyes. You canât think about whatâs under the shirt when youâre sitting right next to him, and certainly not while on stream, even if chat canât see you check him out!
Unfortunately, the side opposite of Ike is the one with Ren and Uki. Those two are idyllic. Without a care in the world, it seems. You envy how easily Uki can act on what he wants, even if you know he doesnât see Ren like how you see Ike. Ren doesnât mind it at all, either. He literally lives by the rhythm of his own ukulele.Â
Ike lowers his drink with his eyes closed, as if it would make the refreshing feeling last longer. His eyelashes are the same ashen color as his hair. Gold gleams between his ears and on the chain of his glasses.
Possessed by the music, and distracted by the rambling, you become one with the background and lean along Ikeâs arm.
Itâs an indulgent dip into the waters, but shallow compared to all you feel for him. Ever since you met Ike in person itâs been easier to control yourself around him, and if anything, youâre reminded that this is the man youâve gotten the closest to in both career and friendship. The only barrier between your cheek and his body is his shirt sleeve, but your arm rests against his forearm, right where the freckles taper off. Thereâs no resistance at all as you make yourself comfortable in the crook of his arm.Â
But you hold yourself back. Even though the off-collab made you feel gutsier than before, you think that youâd pass out if you tried anything else. Besides, you feel so at peace against his arm, but too afraid to look up and see his reaction.Â
The blend of peace and fear churns in your heart as it dawns on you: you were wrong to call this a crush. It runs far deeper than you couldâve imagined.
Vox says something with finality. His voice snaps you out of your thoughts, but the words go unregistered. As he spoke, his eyes drifted around with his body language, but he snaps to look at Ike expectantly. You swear his smirk gets a little more mischievous as he does.Â
The air stills, even though you know eyes arenât on you, just the man you lean on. It stays frozen as Ike waits to respond. You still donât have the heart to look up at him and break your selfish, unrequited fantasy.
You just want to stay here, unresisted.
Ike deadpans. âAnyways.â
Just like that, the moment is over, and Mika laughing at Vox striking out clears the air around you. But Voxâs eyes fall to you for just a split second as he moves in his seat. Frost settles down your back at the thought that he knows, but thereâs a solid chance he hasnât connected the dots. You pray he hasnât.
Then you see Fox Mom herself right behind him, and she shoots you a shit-eating grin with a hand over her heart and a glass in the other.Â
No doubt about it. Youâre screwed.Â
The frost turns to glaciers and burns into hot shame all at once. You love Nina, you really do, and youâd always consider her a good friend before coworker. However, sheâs known for fishing around for any crumb of fanservice, and she gets straight to the point whenever she eggs it on, not to mention how she loves to tease her kids on just about anything. You are never going to hear the end of this if she can help it.
You really donât know what you expected. It feels like everyoneâs staring at you, even the chat. You canât help but feel bitter. How come Uki can flirt with as many guys as he wants, you wonder, but I canât even touch Ike without getting eyed up?Â
You know the answer, but it doesnât do anything to help the bitterness and the embarrassment, and how much you want to hide. On instinct, you take advantage of the warmth and nestle yourself deeper into Ike to hide your face, just in time as he curls his head above yours.
Nina makes a sound kind of like a fork stuck in the garbage disposal for the briefest of moments before smashing her lips together and bringing her glass to her mouth like a mute button. As if you didnât feel seen enough.Â
âFind any other questions, Uki-senpai?â Aiaâs nose is buried in her phone, and God, you could kiss her for changing the subject. As much as she poked fun about you about Ike, she was still a total angel and a ride-or-die all at once.Â
âOh, I have questions,â Uki says. Luckily, heâs graceful enough to leave it at that. âTwitter wants to know first impressions for everyone that hasnât off-collabed before.â
Ren speaks. âI think the only person Iâve done an off-collab with before is Nina, so is it cool if I go first?â
Aia gestures for him to go on. Sheâs still stuck on her phone as he continues.
Your phone vibrates in your pocket, but you ignore it. Then again and again and again, and when you finally check it, you understand why. When Aia, Mika and Alban first heard you spill your feelings for Ike, they made a group chat dedicated to wingmanningâor at least, thatâs what they pitched it as. They tease you more than anything else, and as irritating as it gets⌠you have to admit, itâs nice to confide in them, and nice to know they wouldnât hold it against you.
Anyways, Albanâs going apeshit.Â

Fuck, she got you there. You cast a pointed look at the angelic maiden herself, or at least as pointed as you can be with a man youâre scared to love wrapped around you. She looks as satisfied as a cat pushing a glass off a counter.Â
You set your phone on âdo not disturbâ and placed it behind you on the counter with a huff.
âReader, honey, how about you?â Nina leans forward, half-lidded and as sultry as ever. She swirled her drink around in its glass. âItâs your first off-collab ever, right? Iâd love to hear what you have to say.â
âOh, well, um.â Your brain struggles to catch up. âFirst impressions, rightâŚâ
Aia slips you a thumbs up. Youâre going to rip her a new one after this. Her, and Mika, and definitely Nina; this is the most subtle Ninaâs ever been but you can tell sheâs fishing for an answer here. You can take your friends figuring it out, embarrassing as it is, but you are not about to expose yourself to thousands of live viewers.Â
âItâs kind of crazy actually meeting up with everyone,â you start. âIâve known them for so long, but all online, and being able to match the voice to the face in real life, I donât think I can actually describe it. Itâs kind of surreal, but it feels so nice to just talk to them in person. Aia, Nina and Uki were the first people I met up with, and man, those three are a sight. I know everyone says it, but Uki is absolutely the most beautiful person Iâve ever seen. Nina and Aia are really pretty, too. Hey, Aiadmirers, did you know when your oshi laughs, she looks just as cute as she sounds?â
Aia yells. âReader, shut up!â
âThen stop being so cute all the time, you dork!âÂ
âIâm not a dork! Iâm cool!â
You resume, satisfied with your revenge. âMika and Vox are both really chill. Theyâre kind of quiet, so if youâre just walking by, youâd think theyâre two normal people just going about their days. But whenever we talk itâs always something insane. Vox sounds like a dignified gentleman and Mika is kind of like that cool girl that you want to be friends with, but if you actually pay attention, Mikaâs showing Vox a picture of her insides during surgery while heâs reciting something about the Bite of â87. And Ren is probably one of the most straightforward people youâll ever see. Heâs so optimistic, and really expressive, too, even though most of the expressions are all different types of smiles.â
âWhatâs your impression of Ike?â Nina asks.
What does she expect you to say to that one, that screens canât capture how the sun glitters through his glassy green eyes? Hearing him say your name in-person sends shockwaves through your body? How you want to kiss every little freckle heâs never mentioned before and keeps hidden under long sleeves, even though itâs the beautiful skin he lives in daily?
âSame old Ike. Heâs exactly like how I expected,â you say. A total fib.Â
She cocks her head. âReally? Even after all the time youâve spent together?â
âIâm trying to hang out with everyone.â
âYou havenât answered my question.â
Cornered. Nina takes a long, slow drink from her glass as you scramble for a quick answer that wonât immediately out you. âWhenever I talk to Ike, heâs really emotive. You can tell what heâs thinking before he says anything. He also has a good sense of style, so heâs fun to go shopping with, and honestly, fun to do anything with. Heâs someone you can always have a good time with, and always makes you feel so comfortable around him. Ikeâs magnetic.â
Mika muffles a coo behind you. Youâre going to kill her if you survive this stream.
âThatâs very sweet, Reader,â Nina replies. âHear that, Ike?â
âYes, I did.â He sounds strained.
âGot any feelings about it?â
âYes? I meanâer, thanks?â You feel Ikeâs head rustle. âI, umm. What am I supposed to say about that?â
âI donât know. I just think that about you, thatâs allâŚâ
âAww, cute. I love that you love each other,â Nina muses.Â
Ike spits out, âItâs not like that!â Just as you admit, âYeah, I guess so.â
You process his words too late, though, and even as you sputter the ukulele music cuts out just in time with Nina and Mikaâs unfiltered fangirl squeals. Renâs palms mute the chord as his eyes go wide. Aia is already on her phone with her jaw to the floor and Uki throws a look at Nina while he mouths, did that just happen?Â
âI-I mean!â Your throat goes dry and Ike lurches away from you when Vox gleefully shakes Nina like a rag doll. âIâwhâIke, I mean, of course I love youââ Mika screams againâ âAs a friend!â
When you turn to face Ike, heâs curled up into a ball on the barstool with his shirt collar over his face. Even as you feel the blood rush to your face, you keep shouting. Thatâs all you have left. Youâre live. âLike, weâre best friends on and off stream and I love you!â
He mutters something, but you canât tell what. Only his neck and the tips of his ears poke out from his shirt. Were they always that red?
You repeat yourself. âI said, weâre best friends and I love you, so much!â
âAnd I said, I know, thank you, I love you too, Reader!â Ike jerks out to face you as he cries. He looks like a tomato.Â
Then he buries his face into his hands and squeaks like how he always does when somethingâs too cute to handle, or heâs got too many emotions he needs to let out. âYou canât see me, Iâm too embarrassed. Iâm hiding forever and Iâm never coming out.â
You hope the ground swallows you up and you never have to confront this moment again.Â
Uki hisses under his breath and muffles Ren's ukulele. You don't know what he said, but you realize all too late that the alien prince himself was laying down the first few notes of âFly Me To The Moon.â
While you slump and fold your arms over your face on the counter in pure embarrassment, Aia stands up and commandeers the mic. She slaps a hand over Mikaâs mouth to muffle the scream. âMan, bummer that Ike-senpai is gone from us forever, but you know what else might be gone forever if you donât get it now? The sponsor for this stream, our current limited-edition Nijisanji voice packs!â
And as much as you could kiss her yet again for changing the subject, you canât get over how everything blew up in the last five minutes, and groan into your arms instead.Â
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
The stream passed, luckily, without a hitch after that. No one asked any questions, but it was pretty damn clear everyone in the room had an idea of what just happened, and the impending shitstorm. In fact, it was so clear that when you stalked off to your room to sulk, no one made a fuss, and when you realized ten minutes into your sulking session that you left your phone on the counter, you figured it wasnât worth it to show your face again until after you finished your pity party.Â
The entire time, you laid in your bed with a pillow over your face so you could pretend like you were being absorbed into the sweet embrace of death. Overdramatic, sure, but you figured you were justified.Â
Without your phone, you had no way to check exactly how bad the fallout was on Twitter. The poor Pen and Paper tags were sure to be flooded with fans imagining a happy ending to that stint youâd never be able to experience yourself, like salt in the wound. Not to mention, it was a huge seven-person off-collab! It didnât just end with the Pen and Paper fans. No, it would extend past the Bookworms and the Quilldren, and certainly to the rest of the fandoms with an oshi in this Airbnb. Maybe even the offshoot viewers who donât regularly watch your content, but made an exception for the off-collab, or, you know, the ones who have no idea who you or Ike are but canât get enough of the whole accidental-confession-live-on-stream thing. Forget Nina; the entire Vtuber community is never, ever, ever going to live this down.Â
Ike sounded so distraught, too. You wanted to kick yourself for it. Not only did you make a fool of yourself, but he got caught in the crossfire just because you didnât catch yourself slipping. Not like heâd reciprocate anyways. Heâs always been bad at taking compliments, but you keep thinking about how embarrassed he was about you loving him.Â
All your frustration and humiliation coursed through the darkness under your pillow, and you stew so bitterly that you donât even dream when you fall asleep.Â
You just wake up groggy and exhausted, but too restless to go back to sleep. You look out the window, and the stars have barely come out to play in the early night sky.Â
As much as youâd hate to admit it, that impromptu nap made you tired of brooding. Besides, you canât hide from your friends forever. Hopelessly in love or not, theyâre still your friends, and even if you decided to stream during the trip, this off-collab was always about spending time with them instead of worrying over your online presence.Â
It takes you half an hour to hype yourself up, but eventually, you open your door and step out into the hall.Â
You can already hear voices further away in the Airbnb. You place one of them as Nina, and after her, a baritone that could only belong to Vox.Â
ââŚFuck Twitter, theyâre going to forget about it in two weeks or less anyways.â You overhear as you walk down the hall of rooms and closer to the living room. Youâve heard Vox passionate before, but never this serious as well. âBesides, what exactly did they say?â
A mumble. You canât place the words, but you bristle when you recognize the voice. Thatâs unmistakably Ike.Â
âSee? Again, Iâm so sorry. I was out of line, and I forgot my place. I shouldnât have interrogated them like that,â Nina says. âBut youâre overthinking what they said.â
Another mumble. By now, youâre in the kitchen. You lift your phone from where you left it, and hold your fingers over the half of the screen where your notifications appear as you check the time. Itâs barely 11 PM.Â
The kitchen and living room are connected, with plenty of seating space all around. That was why Mikaâs travel laptop was still on the counter and plugged into the wall from the stream earlier, but on the other side of the wall from the kitchen, you noticed an open window and silhouettes from it. Four people sat on the shallow roof overlooking the uneven ground plenty of feet under the building. A pair of fox ears twitch at the night wind as they watched the stars grow brighter in the sky.Â
You look through the fridge. Youâre peckish, but if you were to be honest with yourself, youâre trying to stay quiet for a reason.Â
Thereâs a huff. âOh my god, dude. Just tell Reader already.â
You stand up a little straighter. Mika was with them? Were they talking about you?
âThereâs nothing to be said, Mika!â Ike huffs back. âIâm screwed anyways. Just drop it, okay? I donât need this getting in the way of what was supposed to be just a normal trip.â
âYou canât keep running away forever. Just act like an adult and tell them. Itâs going to be fine, I swear.â
âAnd how exactly do you know that?â
âWellâŚâ Mika trails off. âI canât say. I just know, okay?â
âUh-huh. And I know Iâm screwed.â The wind rustles outside. You stay motionless. âJust two weeks. Can I please just have two weeks where I donât have to worry about this until the trip is over.â
Itâs a question, but he says it with such exasperation that no one can consider any other answers.Â
âFine.â Nina relinquishes. âHave it your way. Iâm just worried for you two.â
âItâs going to work out, Ike. But Iâm tired.â Vox stifles a yawn. âTomorrow is going to be better. Let it go for the night and come back to it once youâre in better shape, and just remember. Itâs going to work out.â
âThanks, Vox.â
âNow get in here.â
You hear shuffling fabric before the two men start yelling. Vox cackles while Ike cries through gritted teeth. âDang it, Vox, Iâm going to shove you off this roof!â
âGet ruffled, idiot! Thatâs your fault for trusting me!â
âI just wanted a hug!â
You snicker under your breath. Vox loves to ruffle Ikeâs hair despite the latterâs protests, though he tends to accept it instead of shove him off like anyone else that would dare. Besides, as dreary as Ike sounded during that conversation, he nearly sounded like his old self as Vox and the others laughed.
âI think Iâll go too. Mommy needs her beauty sleep.â
âMm, Iâm still pretty awake. Wanna keep looking at the sky with me, Ike?â
âSure. Here, Nina, let me move out of the wayâŚâ
Shuffling turns to footsteps, and brings you back to reality. You busy yourself looking through the paltry groceries.
The sound of footsteps gets louder and louder, until they become a hollow click on the hardwood floor. Nina crawls through the window, but stops in her tracks with a startled noise.
You turn around and nod as casually as possible. âOh, hey, Nina.â
Vox is also halfway through the window, and his eyes go comically wide as he forgets how to move. âOh. Hey. Reader. Fancy seeing you here.â
âYeah! Um!â Nina coughs long enough to make you uncomfortable. âWhat are you doing here?â
âTook a nap. Got hungry.â Itâs not a lie. You grope around in the fridge and breathe a sigh of relief when you see a stick of string cheese in your hands. âYou guys just hanging out?â
Nina nods. âYeah, we were on the roof. Itâs getting late, though. You should get some rest for tomorrowââ
Vox elbows her. âBut not after looking at the sky for a little bit. Itâs beautiful. Very clear. Romantic, even. The architects did a wonderful job placing this house right at the perfect angle to watch the stars rise. Did I mention it was romantic?â
You act natural and take a big bite out of the string cheese. âOnce or twice. Is it the seniorsâ bedtime?â
âYou got me,â Vox says.Â
âI love going to sleep early and giving my kids private time before bed to reflect and hold deep conversations with one another about their feelings,â Nina says. âAnd also nighttime face masks.â
âWoo, skincare, what she said.âÂ
âHey, by the way, Reader, honey, did you hear anything we talked about?â
âNo,â you lie.
âCool,â Vox says. You eat the rest of the string cheese in one bite. âGood for you. And goodnight, Reader.â He dusts himself off before casting his golden gaze down at you. âBe nice, will you?â
Shivers go down your back. You have a feeling heâs referring to something unspoken. âI will.â
âThatâs my sweet thing,â he purrs. âAnyways, Iâm going the fuck to beddy bye. Honk shoo, Reader, donât stay up too late.â
Vox struts off with dark hair flowing behind him and the scent of his aftershave in the air. He leaves you to stand awkwardly next to Nina.Â
Suddenly, she takes you by your shoulders and forces you in front of her. You blurt out an unflattering startled noise before she gets right up in your face and stares dead into your eyes. Â
âPlease be good,â she says darkly. Was that a threat? âPlease be so, so good to my baby.â
âI will,â you say, more out of fear than anything else.
She blinks once, then sheâs back to the doting mother you know and love. She squeezes your shoulders. âThank you, honey! Sweet dreams!â
And just like the Voice Demon before her, Nina bounds off to her room.Â
Huh. That was weird. Nonetheless, youâre alone in the living room, and you can see the outline of Ike and Mika sitting on the roof in silence.Â
You lightly knock on the side of the window. They both perk up at the sound. âCool if I join you?â
Mika responds quickly. âSure! Watch your step, Reader. The roof isnât that steep but it would be awkward if you ate shit.â
âAgreed.â You step onto the tiling, and shift your body to match the angle. You feel like a newborn deer learning to walk. Luckily, Nina and Vox leaving meant that there was more than enough space for you right next to the window.Â
Ike sits between you and Mika. âItâs pretty, isnât it?âÂ
âYeahâŚâÂ
âPrettyâ is putting it mildly. The stars are so clear tonight, and scatter across the sky like sequins. The Airbnb was located further away from the heart of the city, so the darkness only amplified how bright the stars shone against the stark night. A breeze drags through the air and fallen leaves rustle between the grass.Â
âThis is so nice.â Comfort settles into you like the breeze in your hair. âI love it.â
Ike sighs. âRight? Itâs so peaceful.â
âAnd thereâs so many more stars out here than there are in the city.â
âIt makes you want to just zone out and cool down.â
âYeah, totally.â Mika coughs. âHuh! Cool! Well, Iâm tired now. Just keep staying out here and enjoy the sky, Iâm going to bed. Enjoy yourselves.â
Mika inelegantly shuffles around your bodies and slips back inside before either of you can properly tell her goodnight.Â
Ike cocks his head as he watches her stumble through the window. âShe just said she would stay outâŚâ
âHm?â
âAh, nothing. Just thinking to myself.â
With the extra space, Ike leans back and lays along the roof. The stars cast a dreamy glow over his soft smile as he continues. âIt really is something that just makes you want to have a deep conversation, or just think, you know?â
You hum in agreement. You get what he means, but thereâs only one topic you can imagine having a deep conversation about right now, and itâs the very one you brooded over earlier that day.Â
But Ike is Ike. Heâs rational and calm and kind, and laughs at your stupid jokes, and texts you first before any of your other mutual friends. The night turns the tips of his hair bluer than usual, and the stars remind you of the freckles hidden along his creamy skin. His glasses reflect the galaxy above.
Even though todayâs stream was embarrassing, you know Ike trusts you enough to tell you if youâve ever crossed a boundary. After all, itâs commonplace to discuss limits on and off stream as soon as possible, and your friendship was so strong that youâve both opened up to one another. Heâd let you know if the whole cuddling thing was too much. Besides, he didnât resist. He even rested his head on yours. That has to account for something, right?
You snap out of your thoughts when you feel a gentle tug on the sleeve of your hoodie. Itâs Ike. He asks, âLay down with me?â
A wave of fondness washes over you like the tide. Heâs cute when heâs earnest like this. You get as comfortable as you can on the tiling, and when you still, you hear something shift before your hand grows warm. Ike scooted closer to you, and placed his pinky finger over yours.Â
This is bliss. A beautiful sight with a beautiful boy next to you. Your best friend.Â
âI do love you,â you say.Â
It just feels right to say.Â
Ike is silent. He doesnât make a single sound as you stare up at the stars and the blackened sky. The breeze rocks a tree, and as the leaves part, you see the moon for the first time: one thin, waning crescent that blends into the darkness.Â
Ikeâs head is turned away from you. You canât tell what heâs thinking at all.Â
ââŚI donât know what you mean,â he admits. âYou do? As a friend?â
âWeâve always been friends.â
âJust that?â
âI donât know what youâre asking me, Ike.â
âN-never mind. Iâm sorry, am I making it weird?â
âNo, you could never make it weird.â The colors of the view gloss together. You feel like a balloon slowly deflating. âFeels like thatâs all Iâm doing lately, though.â
Neither of you say anything.Â
This was a bad idea.Â
You swear the rustling leaves mock you.Â
âWait.â Ike practically snatches your hand up. âWait, Reader, are you saying you like me?â
âYeah. Iâm saying that I love you.â
Ike stares at you, and if you had to choose just one word to describe his expression, itâs stricken. His mouth is slightly parted, and his shocked eyes drive holes through your skin, leaving you exposed. The brief stutter that escapes him sounds like it was dredged out from frozen, murky waters. âIââ
He drops your hand and turns away.Â
âIâm sorry,â he finally says, barely audible. âThis is⌠this is a lot.â
âIâm sorry too, this was a stupid idea. What was I thinking?â You get on your feet, but the slope makes what couldâve been a fluid motion into a stumbling, slow rise, as if your legs werenât jelly enough already. You inch to the window mortified. âI think I should go. Sorry to bother you.â
You donât dare to glance at him before you step back inside, not even when he calls your name halfway through the window.
Once youâre back in the living room, you cover your face, then drag your hands through your hair. You canât even begin to describe how exhausted you feel. This is heartbreak, isnât it?
You blink furiously, and the outline of a figure by the fridge comes into view.Â
âReader?â Mika asks. She has a stick of string cheese in her hand, but walks to you. âReader, what happenedââ
You take her empty hand and pace to your room. You open the door. âAre you okay?â
The second it shuts, your breath hitches. Mika doesnât hesitate to take you in her arms. She holds you as the first tear falls, and you begin to cry.
.ă . ⢠â . ° .⢠°:. *â ° . â
You wake up the next day sprawled in your bed, even though the blankets are tucked comfortably around you. On the floor is a pillow and another pile of blankets, and when you recognize the dark hair tied into a loose ponytail, the memories of last night come rushing back.
What an awful night. Awful decisions all day, really, and all of them ones you made. You really donât know what you were thinking. You groan at the memory.
âReader?â Mika perks up. Her phone is in her hands, but she sits up level to your face on the floor. âGood morning. How are you feeling?â
Another groan.
âYeah, I figured,â she says. âNina, Vox and Ike went out to do their own thing, and I think Ren and Uki are cafe-hopping. Itâs just you, me and Aia in the house right now.â
You rub the sleepy out of your eyes. âThatâs cool, I guess.â You cast a downward glance to Mikaâs makeshift bed on the floor. âSorry for being a nuisance.â
âYouâre not a nuisance, Reader, donât say that.â She nudges you. âWeâre friends. Itâs what friends do. Speaking of, do you want Aia to come by? And Albanâs online, so I can call him, too. If you want.â
âItâd be niceâŚâ
Less than ten minutes pass before Aia shows up at your door with breakfast sandwiches and orange juice. All three of you sit on the blanketed floor while Mika voice calls Alban on her phone. A pot of coffee brews over speakerphone as you recount last night.Â
â...And to make things worse, we just streamed yesterday,â you explain. âGod, I should check Twitter. Thereâs got to be a million people with eyes on our ship tag, and ugh, I hate thinking about how many weirdos are going to push a ship that canât work out IRL.â
âI can check it for you,â Aia offers. You hand her your phone. âYou remember your Twitter password?â
âYeah.â
âCool. Sorry in advance.â She deletes the app off your home screen.
You begin to protest, but she turns off the phone and sets it aside, out of your reach. âYouâre off the clock, Reader! Work troubles can wait until youâre back online, and that includes doomscrolling. You can redownload it when youâre in a better headspace.â
âI really hate admitting youâre right.â
âShit, Reader,â Alban finally says. âHe seriously dropped the ball. Iâm sorry.â
âI know. I really thought he would get it, but it took him so long to piece it together, like he never thought about us like that before. I shouldâve known it was just me. Iâm so stupid.â
âYouâre not stupid, youâre hurt,â Mika says. âItâs understandable, but that still doesnât make it hurt any less.â
âIs it wrong that I feel like I deserve it? I mean, I knew day one that this wouldnât work out. We work together online, and we have fans that ship us with each other and the rest of this company, for fuckâs sake. Getting heartbroken was inevitable and I still went for it. Either Iâm a glutton for pain or Iâm just plain clueless.â
Albanâs voice is distant from the phone as he messes with his coffee maker. You canât properly hear him under his breath and over the pot, but if you could, you couldâve heard him mumble, Trust me, youâre not the only clueless one here.
But he returns back at the phone, and youâre totally oblivious. âYou canât choose who you fall for,â he says. âIt was really that bad?â
âIt took him like a minute to realize I was confessing. And then when he realized it, he apologized to me.â
Aia straightens. âDid he say no?â
âNot really, but why would he apologize if he reciprocated?â
Aia exchanges a look with Mika. Alban grumbles. âNo fucking way.â
âTell me exactly how he reacted,â Aia instructs. She plowed through her sandwich during the conversation, but she left the remaining half on her plate forgotten as she laced her fingers together and leaned forward like a calculated boss.Â
âIt was like he couldnât comprehend what I was saying at first. He asked if I meant it as friends, until he asked me if I liked him. And when I told him I loved him in response, he was so shocked that he let go of my hand, so I left.â
âNo fucking way,â Alban repeats, and groans as he drawls out his words. You can practically hear him drag his hands over his face. âNo fucking way. Ikeeeee. He seriously dropped the ball.â
âI know. I canât believe it.â
Aia takes both of your hands in her own. âReader, Iâm not even saying this to hurt you, but this is the clumsiest confession Iâve ever heard of.â
You squint. âRight, that makes me feel so much better.â
âIâm really not! You know what this sounds like? Miscommunication,â she declares. âYou didnât get a solid yes or no. So now itâs going to be awkward between you two until you get an actual answer to the confession, or at least some kind of resolution. You wanna know what I think? It sounds like he didnât even believe what he was hearing before you left. Which, by the way, is a common response to not just confessions but other major news, so chances are you didnât blow up your friendship as hard as you thought.â
âShe has a point,â Alban says. âI believe you, Reader, but Ike isnât the type of person to just crush other peopleâs feelings like that. You just woke up, right?â
âI havenât even left my room yet. Mika says everyone else is out of the house. Heâs with Vox and Nina, I think.â
âSo then he hasnât had a chance to talk to you since the confession,â he continues. âAnd those three are really close. Iâm willing to bet theyâre helping him manage it, âcause it sounds like heâs going through it just as confused as you are.â
You stare at the floor. Hope feels foreign, yet you canât help but wonder. You struggle to remember the exact way Ike reacted last night, but you really canât tell what facts were clouded over by the rejection. A rejection that possibly didnât even happen, mind you. The confusion and regret blurs over everything like water on wet ink.
âYou really think so?â You quietly ask.
Aia nods, and Alban agrees over the phone.
Mika pipes up, a glass of juice in her hands. âHereâs my take. We can theorize as much as we want, but none of us really know what Ikeâs thinking about, least of all you. Especially since you didnât actually resolve anything, and that tension is going to eat at you until you get an answer or it actually damages your friendship. You ask me, the next best thing you can do is bring it up.â
She takes a sip of her juice and leaves you to absorb her advice.Â
You mull it over along with the memory of last night. âHe called my name as I left.â
Alban chokes on his coffee. âHe called your name?â
âYeah, but I didnât respond.â
âOh my God. READER!â He shouts so loud that Mika turns the volume down. âIâm going to lose it. Iâm actually freaking it right now. Reader!â
âWhat?â
âFuck what Mika said earlier, you are stupid!â
âHey!â
âIâm saying this in the nicest way possible, you are so stupid. He was trying to talk to you!â
Your face goes through a handful of emotions as you sputter. âAre you serious, Alban?â
âYes! Mika, Aia, back me up.â
Aia crinkles her nose. âI did just say it sounded like a total miscommunication.â
Meanwhile, Mika twirls a lock of red-and-black hair between her finger, distracting herself. She hesitates, trying to figure out exactly how she wants to say her piece, before she simply shakes her head and stills. âJust talk to him.â
âWhich is easier said than done.â Your shoulders roll back as you stare up at the ceiling, your hands supporting you as you lean. Even with your friendsâ encouragement, the memory of how hard you blew it last night still haunts you. Itâs even worse than starting at ground zero; youâve already tasted failure once, and youâre hesitant to embarrass yourself again.Â
That stricken look Ike gave you flashes across your sight every time you blink. What was he thinking when he stared at you like that? You canât tell if the disgust is true or if your anxieties are getting the best of you.
The best solution to anxieties, however, is looking at the factsâor at least, what isnât tainted by your bias. Your friends mentioned there was nothing wrong with a workplace romance, and as much as the stream made you want to cringe, no one seemed put off by it. Alban and Aia are set on getting you and Ike to talk, and so is Mika. In fact, Mika spoke with Ike as well as Vox and Nina last night before you entered, and even if you had no idea what those four were talking about, you still picked up your name and that apparently Ike had something to tell you.
Pieces start to fall into place when you consider the three around you, staging an intervention over a late breakfast. Aia always gets you in situations where you can be close to Ike and bails you out when it gets awkward, and as much as he wonât get off your back about it, Alban gave you great advice between all his teasing. Mika was nosy at first when she learned about your feelings, but now that you think about it, sheâs been incredibly tactful ever since the off-collab began.Â
You canât help but snicker as you connect the dots. âIs this the first time you guys actually started wingmanning for me?â
Aia purses her lips. âHey, not the first. Remember when we made that group chat? Weâve always been your wingmen.â
âI know. But you guys are seriously helping,â you say. âThanks. Though I do wonder, MikaâŚâ
She perks up as you say her name. âBe real with me. Do you know more than youâre letting on?â
She flinches. Albanâs fingers snap over the phone. âBusted.â
Mika holds her hands up like a criminal caught in the act, but thereâs a loose, sly smile hanging on her face. âI donât think itâs my place to say.â
âWhat do you mean, itâs not your place to say?â
âIâm sorry, Reader, but I made a promise not to spill, and Iâve been doing way too much behind the scenes to break the promise like that. Just do me a favor and talk to the guy, will you? Thatâs the best I can tell you.â Mika rests her head in a hand, and the smirk looks even more knowing. âAnd if you canât figure it out after that, then youâre definitely stupid.â
You bluster. âIâm not stupid!âÂ
âStill remains to be seen.â Aia gently flicks your forehead. âBut you do look a lot better. How are you feeling now?â
Aside from the fading pain on your forehead? Youâre surprised at how much lighter you feel now that you unloaded all your worries with your friends. The rejection still stings, and youâre not exactly confident, but, well, youâre smiling. The clean, tangy taste of orange juice lingers between your tongue. Aia and Mika sitting on the pile of blankets reminds you that regardless of your love life, theyâd stay by your side until the bitter end, and Albanâs voice keeps you connected with your friends no matter where in the world you are.
You snatch Aiaâs half-eaten sandwich off her plate and sink your teeth into the bread. She cries out in protest. âHey!â
âBetter now.â You set the sandwich back where you found it. Even though your future with Ike looks cloudy, the smile doesnât leave. âDonât flick me.â
âSpeaking of.â Mika picks up the phone and scrolls through her messages. âNina just texted that she, Vox and Ike will come back in an hour or less. Reader, are you up for this?â
âWhat do you mean, âup for this?ââ
âJust seeing Ike again. It was a weird night,â she says. âI stand by what I said, but if itâs going to be too much too soon, then Aia and I can cover for you until you feel better.â
âI donât know.â Thatâs what gets your expression to sink from light to thoughtful. âI think I want to take your advice. I just donât know if Iâm ready to talk it out yet.â
âStill wanna hang out with us or take a moment to yourself?â
âI think Iâd just go back to moping if I was alone,â you joke.
âCool. Let me go grab some nail polish Nina gave me yesterday.â Mika rises and strides to the door. âYou have a steadier hand than me. And Nina said the color suits me more than her.â
Aiaâs face lights up. She happily cries âGirlsâ night!â even though itâs barely noon and Alban is decidedly not a girl, but then he croons something in a valley girl accent so strong you canât even tell what heâs saying. Scratch that; heâs a girl by association.
When he drawls out one long âYaaaaaas, bestie!â you canât help but laugh. Your love life is in shambles, but at least your friendships are solid as hell. Youâd give the world for these three.
Mika returns a moment later, travel-sized nail supplies in her arms and a totally unrelated topic on the mind. The sharp scent of the lacquer startles you out of your thoughts as you uncap the bottle and Mika splays her hands out, and Alban and Aia air their opinions on something entertainingly dumb.Â
Nina was right: this color is stunning on Mika. You paint Aiaâs nails too, and halfway through her second hand, you hear the front door open, the end of an intelligible conversation, and telltale footsteps, each diverting across the house. The girlsâ eyes flicker to you. You know theyâre trying to read your expression, but you concentrate on how the brushstrokes pool together into one smooth coat. Your thoughts are a storm and you canât even pick out the emotion commanding it.Â
So you keep joking along instead and focus on the nail polish, refusing to give the storm an opportunity to strike. Alban quips off of you, and the moment passes as Mika and Aia return to the conversation.Â
That is, until half an hour later when you hear a knock on the door. Mika cocks her head, a silent question, and when you nod she stands. Her nails dried when you finished Aiaâs, and dot the doorknob as she cracks it open. A tiny margin of light from the hallway shines into your room, and you realize she positioned herself square in front of the threshold, shielding you from the person on the other side.Â
She talks evenly. âHey, welcome back.â
âThanks. Is Reader here?â
Your mind thunders as you register the voice. You can only see the leg of his jeans behind Mika, but you recognize Ikeâs voice on the other side.Â
Aia shuffles by as a second shield. âNeed them for something?â
âKind of,â Ike says. âDo you mind if I talk to them?â
âI donât know, whatâs it aboutââ
âAia, you can lay off him.â You call from your corner of the room. âYou too, Mika.â
âWhatever you say. Just let me just grab my stuffâŚâ
Mika grabs the nail supplies and deafens on Discord, but doesnât even think to pick up the blankets along the ground. Instead, she glides to you and whispers under her breath. âWeâre rooting for you. Send us a text if you need anything, okay?â
You nod. Aia slips past the threshold, but not without shooting you a thumbs up and mouthing âgood luck.â Not even a second later, your phone buzzes, and you catch Albanâs contact sending you an encouraging message in all-caps.Â
âSee you later!â Aia chirps. âPlay nice, you two.â
The scent of the lacquer follows them as they leave, and the sound of their footsteps fade in time.Â
Still in the doorway, Ike raises a hand to fidget with the chain along his glasses. âDo you mind if IâŚ?â
âOh! Come in. Sit anywhere, I donât mind.â
You stay planted on the floor like how you were with your friends, and Ike sits next to you. You face the wall in front while he gets comfortable.
No words are exchanged as Ike maneuvers around the blankets, and eventually settles down with his back on the floor and head resting on a pillow, staring up at the ceiling. The light is off, but the blinds filter in thin beams of sunlight that cross over the room and the edge of his collar like a grid.Â
âLay with me?â He asks. Then it strikes you like ringing metal; you sit next to each other in the same positions as that night on the roof.Â
Suddenly Ike raises his hands like static. âNot that you have to! I just figured it would be good to get comfortable and all, you know?â Ike hastily explains, then clears his throat. âI wanted to talk. About last night, I mean.â
Your chest flutters at the mention of it, but you remember all your friendsâ encouragement. Here he is, the novelist of your (heartbroken) dreams, already bringing up the topic you dread to mention. You need to take this chance to face it head-on, now or never.Â
You glide down like the ceiling is full of stars. âOkay. What do you want to talk about?â
âA lot, honestly. I donât know how to go about it, but first of all, I wanted to tell you that Iâm sorry.â
You cross your arms. âYou said that enough last night.â
âNot like that! I mean Iâm sorry I acted the way I did. I think I made every wrong choice once you said that you⌠that.â He shovels a hand through his hair. âIâm making it weird again. I should apologize for that, too, itâs just kind of embarrassing saying out loud that you, um, you loved me. Not that you should be embarrassed. I mean, I get it if you are, but that took a lot of guts. You should be proud of that. I admire you for that.â
âSlow down. What are you even saying?â
âWhat I wish I said last night. More than anything else, Iâm sorry I got caught off-guard. I mustâve been so standoffish, because my idiot brain just didnât believe what I was hearing until it was too late and the damage was already done.â Hair the color of ash and ocean falls over his face. âHonestly, I canât believe it now.â
âI get it. Bad idea from me. Can we move on from that yet?â
âI donât think it was a bad idea at all. I just had no idea that you liked me.â
âGive me some time and Iâll get over it, eventually. Iâm not going to let it get in the way of working with you, if thatâs what youâre trying to get at.â
âNo, thatâs not it either! Iââ
Ikeâs eyes squeeze shut. His voice is so quiet, you canât discern what heâs saying. ââŚActually, IâmâŚâ
âRepeat that?â
âIâm happy. Really happy,â Ike says. His pitch rises like a balloon floating up into space, struggling to stay composed. âIâm not good at saying it, but I meant it when I said⌠when I said it during the stream.â
You wave a hand in the air. âIt was weird timing, and I know you mean it like a friend,â you reply. âI didnât mean to pressure you into saying it, and just being friends is fine. Even though Iâm a loser that messed up just about everything.â
The hand catches in midair. Doll-like fingers weave through your grasp, and turn your touch warm as Ike turns to look at you. âNot with me. Donât say that about yourself, okay?âÂ
You stare at how easily he held your hand, and how his fingers cradle your heart between the palms. The corners of Ikeâs eyes are narrowed, two beads of peridot stone that can see through every little line of text between your pages, but thereâs gentleness under his glasses. Something uncertain and fluffy. Softened like a lamb even though he leaves you defenseless.Â
You donât know what to say. Ike is beautiful and kind and handsome and thoughtful when heâs earnest like this. Heâs got you stupid in the head and wrapped around his pinky finger, and doesnât have a single clue.
Peridot sparkles. âYouâre so much more than that. You donât mess things up, Reader. Iâm in love with you.â
Your mouth goes dry and your tongue is still tied. Forget speechlessness; the man took your own damn thoughts away. Your hand remains frozen in air with Ikeâs. If it werenât for the light drag of one of his fingernails along your skin, then you would have figured he took your senses as well.
But the drag ends, and the fingers unlace themselves, and chilled air fills in the gaps Ike once held close. The tips of his fingers rest at the curve of your palm for just one second more before they drift away.
The glint in his eyes dulls. His hand falls to his chest, over his heart, just as slow as he parted. The uncertainty took over, and now itâs like staring at a cloud that doesnât know if it should rain. Ikeâs gaze lowers to his heart. Thereâs a stretch of silence and motionlessness as he stares at where your touch once was, and youâre paralyzed where you lay.
Ike's hand curls in on itself, too loose to make a fist, and his lashes sink over his eyes. His mouth is set into a flat line, but the cheeks are dusted in pinks and reds and peppered freckles in-between, demure and shy all the while.
He turns his face away soon after that. Another break of silence, and he shuffles again, with your vision on his back as if it were a hiding place.
It startles you out of your stupor. The gridded sunlight lets you analyze what you missed. After months of thinking your feelings would never be reciprocated, Ike thought of you just the same. Heâs always been in your corner, and you would go to the ends of the earth for him, and everything is in its perfect position. But his back is still turned, and the memory of last nightâyour confession, and his inactionâit rushes to your head.
So you reach out instead.
Maybe itâs a little selfish. Youâre tired of bumbling around and concealing your true feelings, and now that everything's out in the open, you arenât about to let go without resolution.
But Ike is your best friend, and the man you fell in love with. There was no way youâd ever let go in the first place.
You wrap your arms around his back and hug Ike.
âI think I get why you were so taken aback last night,â you whisper. Even though youâre alone with Ike, you still say it like a secret. âI can barely believe it myself.â
Your warmth is inviting, and every second that passes is another defense downed. Your head perches right above his neck and along his shoulder. Itâs not your first hug with Ike at all, but thereâs only been so many since you first met him in person that it still feels special, and with your bodies flush to the floor, itâs intimate. His eyes are averted and one cheek lays down on the blankets, but the tips of his ears glow scarlet under his jewelry.Â
âIâm glad you were patient with me. I really didnât think I had a chance with you. You know, the long distance and the company, and you know, the standard pining fare. Iâm really lucky.â A smile slips through your words. âIâll stay with you, okay? So take all the time you need.â
Ike chuckles. Even his laughter is blushy-bashful. âIâm just so happy you feel the same, too. I donât even know what to do with myself.â
His body curls as he lays, and your legs brush along his as you cuddle. Holding him makes it feel like he was made to fit in your arms. You sigh. âI love when you canât contain it. Itâs so cute.âÂ
Ike squeaks at that, and unwittingly proves your point. âIt feels so good to say that out loud. I mean, youâre okay with it, right?â A nod. âAnd youâre okay with⌠I donât know. Are we still friends?â
âOf course we are, no matter what. You said you loved me first, so let me say this one?âÂ
You have a feeling you know whatâs coming next. You hug him even tighter.
âReader, letâs go out. I donât want this feeling to end,â he confesses, and your world turns into rose and blush. âCan we?â
Though you expected it, he still takes your breath awayâuntil he taps you on the hand. âCome on, say something before my heart explodes!â
âMine already did! I canât even think straight, andâIâd love that. I really want this.â
Another squeal breaks out as Ike buries his head into a blanket, and your heart soars as he melts. He resembles a swaddled-up kitten, and the rays of sunlight line his silhouette. The fluffy blanket reminds you of an angelâs downy wings along his kitten features. You canât even see his face between the blanket and his hair, but his squeal continues, muted through the blanket as he swoons.Â
Somehow that only makes you feel even more flustered. âNo, donât hide! I want to see you!â
Maybe it wouldâve been better for your heart if he stayed put, because when Ike risesâwith disheveled hair and glitter in his eyes the color of seaglass, and jewelry that frames his red face, and that galaxy of freckles you hold so dear and shine like stars between his blushâyou feel your heart stop. Again.
âWhen did you start having this effect on me?â You ask, mesmerized, and before you know it you thumb over one of his rosy cheeks. âYour freckles are so beautiful.â
He sheepishly grins. âThey donât really show up online. Theyâre pale.â
âNever noticed them until I met you in person. I love them. I love you.â
The grin gets a little wider. One of his fingers grazes along the corner of your ear. Has his hand always been along your jawline?
Ikeâs eyes are shining under the grid of sunlight. The lashes flit just a bit lower from your gaze. âReader, can weâŚ?â
You close your eyes.
And when Ikeâs lips graze your own, you smile on instinct before you remember to kiss back.Â
Ike brings you near, searching for the taste of you as he continues. His touch lodges past your jawline and into your hair, and when one of the fingers grazes along your ear youâre reminded just how much you love Ike. All the yearning you hid for so long bleeds through as you sink down to his level with his head in your hand, gentle yet impassioned.
Then your face bumps against Ikeâs glasses. The kiss breaks as you back away.
Thereâs a brief pause in the aftermath. Ike wordlessly adjusts his glasses, now knocked off-center. Despite finally getting on the same page on your relationship with Ike, youâre still as clumsy about your feelings as ever.
But the corners of your lips curve up as he inspects the lens you squished, then a barely-stifled giggle, and next thing you know, Ikeâs laughing along with you, still underneath your body and with one hand in your hair while the other holds his glasses in place. He sounds as charming as he looks, and the fact that he joined you even when you chuckled out of the blue means that his mind is just as charming as well.
Not that it was breaking news. You know your best friend well, and now that you donât need to deny your feelings any longer, you know youâve got good taste if Ikeâs under you with crinkled eyes and hearty laughter.
When you speak next, the giggles patter out between your words but the quiet delight hangs in your teeth. âCan we try that again?â
Then his lips are on yours again, and the laughter twists between the second kiss, and the third, and the fourth, all the way until you collapse on the blankets with arms around each other, staring up at the stars on the bland popcorn ceiling as adoration fills the space between you.Â

A normal broom: HI IKE

Sun shines through a clear day in Ikeâs room onscreen, but in reality, blackout curtains block out the day outside. A sweet smile graces both Ikeâs face and his model as the Quilldren welcome him home.Â
He greets them, and cracks open a can of soda as he quickly scans through the chat. Obviously, the off-collab is on everyoneâs minds.Â
juuuuuuuuuus: did you have fun?
Kaidororero: offcollab POOOG
lunasmortas: SO CUTE :_heart:
Johnclone: Hope you had a good time!
zZirasthingZz: PEN AND PAPER REAL
Hm. A mod will eventually bonk that message. But then again, itâs inevitable that the ship would come up in chat.Â
Ike takes it in stride and ignores it like any other shipper, but his heart still skips a beat. Nonetheless, he doesnât call any attention to it. âHow about that off-collab, right? I met up with my friends! Where do I even begin?â
Ike recounts his trip from the beginning, and the Quilldren react to his stories with interest. He was one of the last to arrive, so Nina, Uki and Reader picked him up from the airport, and met up with Aia, Ren, and Mika at the Airbnb. Vox was the only one to arrive after him, hot off the heels of a flight delay, but the demon was a welcome party all his own despite his exhaustion.Â
âWe went to karaoke once Vox got situated,â Ike explains. âNina put that song in first so we could all let loose, and so she would have a fun voice tweet for everyone. Might as well confirm everyone that showed up, right?
âBut after that, we didnât want to stress ourselves out to perform for voice tweets instead of just having fun, so that was the only song we recorded. I wish you couldâve heard Uki and Voxâs duet, though. And while we were singing, turns out Ren packed a ukulele with him! Sometimes he would learn how to play along by ear, like a jam session. Mika knows how to play âSomewhere Over The Rainbowâ too, so everyone joined in singing that while she played it. It was so much fun.â
Johnclone: Everyone sounded great!

Ike leans back in his chair. He blows a lock of hair out of his sight as he tries to think. âI remember Vox sang something by George Strait, so then we all egged him on to sing âCountry Roads.â He only did it once I promised to queue up âToxicityâ by System of a Down afterwards.â

Ike takes a sip while the Quilldren greet Alban. Heâs not too surprised Alban seems to know more than the other viewers. Heâs close with almost everyone that went on the trip, and was super active on Discord during the off-collab. The novelist lowers his soda as the chat floods in orange hearts. He wonders how Alban learned so much as an observer. He should ask.Â
But thatâs a question for after stream. Ike continues. âThank Nina for that. She queued up âIâm Not Okayâ by My Chemical Romance, and then shoved two mics in my hands and Readerâs.â
And the chat explodes.Â

The model on the screen doesnât have the same glint in Ikeâs eye when he talks about you. That first day of the trip was all about getting comfortable after long travel hours, and the stories went on as the days went by. Sightseeing with Aia and shopping with Uki by day, and spending the night shooting the shit with Ren until it turns into the littlest hours of the morning.
âVox wanted to try a bunch of different restaurants with me, but you know me, ya boi is not good with most foods. So Nina usually came along in case I couldnât finish something. She and Vox would share my leftovers.â
Something fond crosses over Ikeâs face. His eyes cloud over in fog descending over a clear-sky day. âWe would always talk over food about anything. I appreciate it a lot. They really get me.â The fog stills. âAnd over breakfast one morning, they gave me some excellent advice over something Iâve been meaning to do.â

K. K. Soda: MILORDDDDD

A normal broom: upcoming project? đÂ
Johnclone: I love Nina Kosaka!
âNot a project, no. It was something I was really worried about, even when I was supposed to be taking a break with my friends,â he says. âBut those two seriously helped me clear my head about it. Mika, too. Vox and Nina had a lot of nuanced advice, but Mika told it to me straight, and helped handle what I couldnât. Iâm really thankful to have them.â
His set jaw loosens. âMaybe Iâll talk about it one day.â
The model cocks to the side. Motion blurs the foggy sobriety away. With a lightness to his voice and a knowing gaze, Ike looks straight into the camera and smiles, sentimentality forgotten. The air clears. âBut for now, itâs a secret~!
âAh, now where was I? Spending time with my friends, right? Reader and I hung out often. Sometimes with others, but it ended up being the two of us more than not.â
Birds chirp outside Ikeâs window in time with the hum of his PC. The backlit keyboard in front of the monitors glows the same color as the computer, a healthy blue light that tints the tips of his fingers. He usually sets it to a rainbow spectrum in his own time, but static blue is reserved for going live. It gets him in the right mindset for streaming, and makes his little apartment feel fantastical like the noble background that accompanies his model, even if it only reaches his fingertips.Â
Heâs sure the Ike on the screen has fingertips tinged with blue just like him, an extension of the man outside the screen but without the grittier details. Smooth, pristine hands under gloves where his are callused from guitar playing. Nothing under the modelâs eyes but lashes and a line of red that brings out the pink in his eyes, very much unlike the heavy bags and sunken face from an awful delay on his flight back home. No freckles, either, but even cameras rarely pick them up on video call. Nina cooed over them the first time they met, as motherly as ever, but behind closed doors Reader was utterly fascinated with them. They mentioned something about watching blush travel around his face with the smattering of freckles in-between once or twice⌠maybe more? Doesnât matter when heâs never heard that before and it repeats in his head when he catches himself daydreaming. Itâs one of the best things heâs ever heard.
Vtuber Model Ikeâs face doesnât heat up like how Real Ikeâs certainly is now. He clears his throat. âThe weather was really nice during the entire trip, so we would always get into good conversations while walking back to where we were staying. And sometimes we didnât want to end the conversation, so weâd just keep walking past our Airbnb until our feet hurt or it got dark, whichever came first.Â
âOh, hereâs something funny. Uki really loves cafes, right? Usually he woke up early with Ren to go check out some cafes in the morning, way before the rest of us would even think of waking up. By the time everyone else woke up, they already finished their breakfast, and Uki would tell Reader about the ones to visit or skip. Whenever Uki recommended one, Reader always wanted to go themselves, so I went along to keep them company.âÂ
Even as his skin returns to its original shade, the sweetness sticks to his throat like the soda heâs barely touched at all. Heâs wistful. He didnât expect to miss Reader this much; after all, his relationship with them has bloomed so much ever since you first started working together, but two weeks together (including mutual close friends) changes things. Itâs only been two days since he returned home, but he feels out of rhythm with them.Â
Heâs gotten too accustomed to them. Over the last few months, he thought he did a good job putting aside his feelings for Reader, even when Nina would tease him after every Pen and Paper collab and Vox and Mika would be right behind her, hyping him up to make a move. The fear of rejection was what motivated him to keep his close friendship with Reader without ever confessing to them.
âReaderâŚâ
The world around him is nothing. Paused to buffer as he thinks. He canât remember the last time he felt so happy. Just being in the same room as them makes him feel stupid, and surely heâs been acting like it. Everything he says sounds clumsy when heâs with them. After all, on that day when he owned up to the feelings he repressed for so long that he couldnât properly react to Readerâs confession, he couldnât say much more than how happy he was. Words fail to describe what Reader means to him, yet heâs a novelist, for crying out loud! How ironic!
â...Reader is so patient with me,â Ike says. âAnd theyâre so considerate and dedicated. I wish I told them that earlier. Itâs hard to say things out loud like this, but you only meet people like Reader once in a lifetime if youâre lucky, and even then, thereâs no one quite like Reader.â

Johnclone: Hello Reader!

Reader ăNIJISANJI ENă â : hi!

Ike sputters out nothing but empty air and nervous laughter. âHaha. Um. Hi! Welcome!â
Stupid! He wants to kick himself. Heâs made improvement on verbalizing affection, and heâs comfortable with Reader, especially now that there arenât any secrets left, but heâs still so unfamiliar with affection being returned that his heart is still doing kickflips in his chest.Â

A normal broom: Oh?
âAh, okay! Give me a second.â Ike keeps his Discord on mute, and usually disables desktop notifications when heâs live, so heâs not surprised to open the window to unread messages and some non-urgent pings. Sure enough, Reader sent him something.
Reader: because you were talking about cafes
Reader: image.png (3) Â Â Â | đ 1 |
Me: Oh I recognize these from our first date!
Itâs been over a week now, but just saying he went on a date with Reader has him squeezing his legs together so his feet wouldnât start kicking in the air.Â
Reader: ahh you remembered!Â
Me: I shouldâve figured you took more pictures than the ones you showed me
Reader: dw i have more i wanted to show you
Reader: image.png (8) Â Â Â | đ 1 |
Me: Seriously how are you so good at photography I donât get it-
Me: Youâre really pretty in this one!

Me: I DIDNâT EVEN NOTICE YOU TAKE THIS ONE
Reader: WTH YOUâRE NOT WEIRD
Reader: YOUâRE LITERALLY SO HANDSOME WHY DO YOUÂ T H I N KÂ I TOOK THAT PIC
Well, great, now heâs actually kicking in his seat. Ike is inclined to disagree, but when Reader says it, itâs a super-effective attack on his poor little novelist heart.Â
Me: Akaslwdnja
Me: Thank you đ
Reader: anyways i gotta go i stream in 20 min and iâve barely eaten my food
Me: Go eat! Do you have enough water?
Reader: just refilled my bottle
Me: Good then donât let me keep you! Have a good stream!
And before he can overthink it, in the momentâ
Me: I love you!
His sights are set on his second monitor.
Reader is typingâŚ
Reader doesnât have to respond. Sometimes just saying it is enough.Â
Reader: fdsjdfkl.
Ikeâs been trying to relearn that lesson ever since he realized everything he repressed was reciprocated.
Reader: i love you too, ike
Words heard across the world, one of the people he holds most dear.
His heart beats loud in his ears, but he can feel it slow, somehow. Reader is exhilarating, but thereâs security in them, too. The nerves kick in until he remembers theyâre just as exposed as the other, and the vulnerability generate a sense of comfort. Reader makes him feel understood like no one else in the world does, and he trusts them more than anything.
He does. He does, he does, he does, even if he only has the strength to say it one at a time. Ike is in love.
Reader: iâll let you know when iâm done streaming, we can watch a movie together after
Me: Itâs a date! Â Â Â | đ 1 |
It takes him a moment to tear his gaze away from your messages.Â
His streaming monitor reflects his movements. The chat moves along. Blue light spreads through his fingertips, just like how he imagines Vtuber Model Ikeâs hands resting on his own keyboard, an extension of the man outside the screen, proof of the fantastical.
âThey sent me something.â Ikeâs laughter is gentle. âI really do love them.â
The chat zooms past, as expected. Surely that would get clipped alongside the off-collab Q&A, but he canât seem to care. He doubts the fandom would really understand how deep the connection goes, and if they do? Some things are just meant to be private.
Besides, on the day Ike and Reader get comfortable enough in their relationship to go public, he knows the Quilldren have his back, just like Reader and their Bookworms.Â
âReader, if youâre still there, we need to meet up again,â Ike says. âI donât know when, but one day.â
A flurry of messages, but only one truly matters.
Reader ăNIJISANJI ENă â : i wouldnât miss it for the world
The model onscreen grins. It pales in comparison to Ike himself.

âI just don't like Gosho's use of ideas nowadaysâ do you have some examples? Iâve been feeling the same but I still donât have like articulate thoughts on it
Well, 'nowadays' has been for. About ten years, ish? The most glaring example that always sticks out in my mind is the Sun Halo MK chapters, with the complete and utter waste of the very common fanfic tropes of 'Aoko gets suspicions' and 'Kid gets injured around someone'. But it kind of matches the general problem I have with his writing that I don't think used to be this bad: He's trying to stuff too much around the strict case-by-case structure (or for MK, introducing the heist-by-heist structure) without actually giving anything focus. (And for MK it's so much worse because he writes it so rarely, that he makes everyone cameo every time but they tend to just get hand waves to whatever drama plot gets instigated by Kid having his next heist.)
For DC, it's the whole. 1) Overarching plot with the BO and suspects and 'here's the available suspects for who's involved with the BO that we introduce one at a time at the end of cases and then maybe leave more clues about them during future cases'. 2) Dangling character or relationship progress and then constantly pulling it away, usually as a joke. 3) When we do occasionally get some of the major plot, it's all at once and then maybe mentioned once in the next case, but otherwise completely dropped. (Amuro and Akai and Kudo tea party tease also lingers as a 'Gosho is just evil at this point'.) Basically rigid structure that doesn't allow for much of the subplots aside from breadcrumbs.
For the current situation, it's also tied into interview comments. Which. have no bearing on the story until he actually uses them. But instead of even that, the movie gets exciting stuff instead and puts it in a giant limbo of is it meant to be canon or not, because no one has been able to settle on that for any movie, even as some details get connected back to the manga more and more.
It's bad writing. Gosho has been a bad writer for a long time, and it's kinda just getting worse. It's my opinion that it's because he tries to have his case after case after case (because mystery manga), and then stuff little bits of everything else in the seams, whether it works well with the case he's writing or if it's a good delivery or (more usually) it's just. Kinda tacked on.
It's partially because of time investment, partially because I have low standards of entertainment, and partially because I want to see how it all ends that I stick with DC. MK is. Similar, but hurts more because I really hate how it morphed into the DC structure when old MK had more you could do with it. Gosho will never drop his rigid case-by-case structure at this point, but it really would be better if he did at this point. Things need development that they're not allowed to have. Or at least smooth out the lines between his hints. And stop with Heiji and Kazuha, just. God. Stop. Is this how people felt about Kid appearances? I feel like at least when people were mad about Kid, they knew nothing was going to happen from the get go, the romance 'tease' is just painful.
#dc thoughts#It's really just a general feeling that I know Gosho /can't/ write drama that well#The writing style he's picked really doesn't allow him to; whether he /could/ write it well or not#So I don't like him going for an idea that sounds like a fanfic idea#Because it's never going to be as fun to watch as just. A fanfic. Because fanfic writers don't have to stick to genre or anything#/They/ can take time to explore character dynamics and implications and direct continuation of the idea into multiple chapters#Gosho literally /can't/ do it. At best; it's okay. At worst; it makes all the characters look so much worse#Because the characters are smart or dumb to allow whatever situation Gosho wants to happen /right then/#Because he can't wait too long to properly build up fun little ideas; he just smashes them in and moves on#(The Fairy Lip heist is also lingering. Most of what sticks in mind is Kid; as per usual)

Queer reads: K.J. Charles
As we leave fantasy, I bring you the last category of my recommendations: smutty smutty smut.Â
Okay, these are romance novels, but in my reading of romance novels, Iâve discovered that I thoroughly enjoy the spicier end of the spectrum. The smuttier the better.Â
So, for day 22, I bring you my favorite romance author KJ Charles.Â
Iâm putting this under a cut, because itâs going to be long.Â
KJ Charles has written loads of books, but Iâve narrowed it down to my favorite 9.Â
Iâll take these by series.Â
First off, I give you the Will Darling Adventures. These books take place in 1920s London (and surrounding environs.) They are post WWI. Will Darling served in the war, came home to no one, and ended up inheriting a book shop. Heâs gruff, manly, and really a giant cinnamon roll. Kim did not serve in the war (itâs a whole thing), and heâs anything but a manly cinnamon roll. Heâs sharp and devious and manipulative. And of course, they fall in loooove. This trilogy follows the same pairing over three books, and itâs nice to see how KJC handles the deepening of their relationship from HFN to HEA. (Thatâs happily for now & happily ever after.)Â
The next two books, Proper English and Think of England, are actually in the same world as the Will Darling books, and youâll see a cameo or two in the later trilogy. Proper English, set in 1902, tells the story of Pat and Fen meeting at a house party that involves a murder mystery and some sexy times. After all, if a murderer is on the loose, you canât sleep alone, right? Think of England, set in 1904, tells the story of Archie and Daniel, at a different house party. Archie is there to investigate some shady business, but heâs a straightforward kind of man, and he is woefully out of his depth. Luckily, Daniel is there.Â
Any Old Diamonds and An Unnatural Vice are set in the same world, about 20 years apart. They arenât the only books in their series, but they are my favorite of each. Any Old Diamonds follows Alec and Jerry as Alec hires Jerry to steal some jewels. Thereâs a great twist to this one, and I love Alec and Jerry. I want more of them. An Unnatural Vice is book two of the Sins of the City trilogy, but Justin Lazarus is the very best character ever, and Nathaniel is good for him. I recommend the all the books in both series, but these two are my favorite in the bunches.Â
Band Sinister is a stand alone novel, telling the story of Phillip and Guy, who have some bad history between their families, but unforeseen circumstances bring them together, and chemistry does the rest. I would love to read a book series about every side character in this book, but alas. Iâll keep reading fanfic instead.Â
Which brings us to The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, the most recent book out by KJC. Itâs the first of a duology, and Iâm super excited for the next one to come out in September. Itâs marked on my calendar in my kitchen. This is a dual pov book switching between Garath, who recently inherited his late fathers title, home, and secrets, and Joss, the boss of the local smuggler family. This is a lovers to enemies to lovers book, and I love it. Really, one of KJCs best.Â
(Ack! I missed Spectered Isle, which is also fantastic. I really enjoy the relationship in this one, and Iâd happily read a bunch of books set in this world, but alas, I think this series is over. Spectered Isle follows after The Casebooks of Simon Feximal (also good. Think smutty, magical Sherlock Holmes.) Like the Will Darling books, Spectered Isle takes place post the Great War, and everyone in the novel is scarred from it. Itâs not a shared universe though, because this one has magic, and the Will Darling books are not fantasy, but similar time frame.)

Not really an anti thing per se, but something I feel the need to vent about:
One of the reasons I feel so conflicted on the Harry Potter thing is not only my concerns about continuing to give Rowling a platform, but also just, unpopular opinion, I⌠kinda think the fandom can be almost as performative as the haters?
I KNOW HOW THAT SOUNDS BUT HEAR ME OUT!
First off: theyâre always going on about how "oh, weâre making ALL the hp characters trans to piss off the TERF!" and then you look at the fics and art and stuff and itâs like, at least 80-90% is just the same cookie cutter "Draco and Harry are gay trans men who make out 24/7 and there's some trans gay WolfStar in the background too, I guess, and also maybe black trans Hermione can have a cameo at some point as a treat, but who cares because itâs Drarryin' Time! *proceeds to Drarry all over AO3*" fics.
Like⌠why is it that after Rowling announced her status as a card-carrying fascist, "all the hp characters" suddenly became just Harry, Draco, Remus, Sirius and maybe Hermione if you're lucky? ESPECIALLY considering the fact that I know from experience that the fandom used to have way more diversity headcanons than this?
What about Ron "angsty because his mom wanted a daughter" Weasley? Or Neville and Hannah, who never had children (clearly, one of them is trans! Or maybe both are trans AND ace! Two groups Rowling hates for the price of one!)? Where are the Trans Dean/Seamus and Trans Lavender/Parvati fics? Trans Luna??? One of Bill and Fleur's kids being the first known male Veela hybrid in the series (literally a fuckin' goldmine of gender possibilities)???? What about fuckin' Nymphadora "gender nonconforming shapeshifter who hates her traditionally feminine name" Tonks (if ANY character wouldâve been made trans or enby to spite Rowling, Iâd have thought Tonks and her son Teddy would be the FIRST choices)???? EBONY DEMENTIA DARKNESS RAVEN WAY (objectively the BEST Harry Potter character)??!!!????
Part of me suspects that this is at least partly because these characters arenât "popular" and therefore won't get the same attention as the Drarry "rivals to lovers" vibe and the All The Young Dudes spin-offs, but I canât be fully sure of that.
And like⌠a lot of times it looks like their activism just, begins and ends with fandom activity? A lot of the same questions levied at HP haters ("are you supporting and/or donating to pro-trans causes?" "Are you making an effort to understand WHY TERF ideology is bad?" etc., all 100% valid questions) can also be levied against fans who make their headcanons and shipping the main source of their activism.
Iâm not saying that NO hp fans are doing actual activism, Iâve seen a few examples, but it feels to me at least like the majority are not. It just seems they think shipping Harry and Draco whilst transing them to pretend it makes the TERF seethe (when really she probably doesnât even know your fanfic exists) is a substitute for activism, just as HP haters think hating the series and patting themselves on the back for not reading it when they were twelve is a substitute for activism.
I guess the bright side is that at least the Drarry shippers arenât harassing people? There are testimonies from trans people about hp fans harassing them, but the majority of those fans obviously wouldnât also be writing trans Drarry fics so ehh?
Idk, like I said Iâm conflicted and I need to vent. Iâve been holding this vent in for a while now.
I guess my thesis statement here is: HP fandom, if y'all really want to "diversify Harry Potter to spite the TERF", then please for the love of Glaux ADD MORE CHARACTERS AND IDENTITIES TO YOUR HEADCANON ROSTER.

Iâve been depressed so I decided to do what normal people do when theyâre depressed and make a list of my favorite Legend of Zelda fanfics thus far. I think Iâll make a Linked Universe one next.
Almost all of these fics are finished and most are multi chapter. Some are quite long too. I also tried to include a variety of ships and stuff. Iâm a multi-opportunity shipper, what can I say?
I know a few of the authors are here on Tumblr but I canât for the life of me find them. So if anyone knows the usernames of the authors so I can tag them Iâd appreciate it.
AnywayâŚ
*cracks knuckles*
1. Make a Wish, Make it Count by LiliansMalice
Three very different people get forced to work together to find a powerful relic that can grant them wishes and solve their (admittedly pretty bad) problems.
Itâs got angst, itâs got humor, itâs got found family vibes. And demons. Lots and lots of demons. Such a good read yâall need to check it out. Also, if anyone knows of any more fics like this let me know!
2. Honor Among Thieves by DawnTheRithmatist
The Master Sword has been stolen and as things start to go missing around the castle Zelda decides to do some digging which ends up with her becoming pen pals with a wanted thief.
Zelink fic which Link goes full rogue and koroks are eager accomplices.
3. Beating Around the Bush by Umbreonix
Revali retires from the air force and becomes a remote bush pilot. His life is all well and good (if boring) until a slightly feral researcher from the University of Central Hyrule derails his entire life.
This fic is genuinely hilarious and also heartwarming. Umbreonix writes Revali so well. Revlink fic with a modern spin. (Side note, the fic âFinding Linkâ by the same author is also really good)
4. Displaced by Socksock
What do you do once youâve saved the day? Yeah, Link and Zelda donât know either. But Link has monsters to kill and cool new outfits to find and Zelda has massive bridges to rebuild and loyal knights to smooch so theyâll be ok.
This was one of the first fics I read after beating BOTW. Novel length Zelink goodness with lots of humor and healing and Link dressing up like Tingle because heâs like that.
5. K.K. Love Song by Socksock
Anything by Socksock is gonna be great but this fic literally kept me sane while I was working on site during the Pandemic. Oklahoma be like that.
Modern Zelink fic where the hot new Shiekah Slate game Animal Crossing brings a Princess and a cook closer together. Link apparently does a good KK impression.
6. Nothing More, Nothing Less by Farbsturz
Ravio, Bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, must head to Hyrule to help itâs Hero defeat the Calamity. Ravio, Bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, is not sure about this.
Ravio plays Breath of the Wild. Or- the Ravlink fic you didnât know you wanted.
7. The Queenâs Tournament by AshleysWrittenWords
In order to become Queen, Princess Zelda must marry. Zeldaâs plan? Part 1: Host a tournament were the winner gets her hand in marriage. Part 2: Enter said tournament in disguise so she can, to quote Merida from Brave âshoot for her own handâ. And it all goes according to plan until Link decides to enter the tourney as well.
I THINK I might have read this, or something very similar, once upon a time on Fanfiction.net. Twilight Princess-ish Zelink.
8. Branded by Embyrinitalics
In a land haunted by war, two lonely people find solace within each other.
This oneâs got a somber vibe to it, but itâs beautifully written and it hits me in the shipper feels so yeah.
9. The Wolf of Farore by Wayward_Chronicler
The Legend of Zelda meets The Witcher in a fic that is technically not finished but has 71 chapters and more character cameos than you can swing a sword at.
Long fic fam this oneâs for you. đ
10. Interim by Starkraving
Link and Zelda have just defeated the Calamity and are wandering Hyrule when they meet a strangely familiar Gerudo who wants to buy Linkâs giant horse and has no idea what heâs about to get roped into.
The Link/Zelda/Gan fic filled with angst, humor and lots of Gerudo grammar lessons.
This was the other fic I read right after beating BOTW. Fair warning- its rated E so itâs got spicy parts to it. But if you donât mind that itâs a fantastic read.
11. Re-Domestication by AnthemXIX
The description says it best: âA semi-feral amnesiac and his wolf guardian try to get along with the locals.â
A really good BOTW Link and Wolf Link fic that isnât Linked Universe related (Though the author has written several really good LU fics as well). Itâs part of a series and theyâre all really good.
12. Secrets of the Shadows by @skyloftian-nutcase
When Link goes missing, Rusl finds a wolf instead of his adopted son and ends up making a terrible mistake. Hopefully he can make it to Kakariko in time to rectify it.
Papa Rusl angst because itâs good for the soul.
#hope you guys enjoy!#and please let me know if any of the authors are on tumble#make lists makes me feel less like banging my head against the wall just to release endorphins#long post#Legend of Zelda#The Legend of Zelda#LOZ#BOTW#Twilight Princess#fanfiction#AU

Fandom (kinda) and Open AI
So, the new CEO of Open AI is a guy named Emmet Shear, who is featured in a quick cameo at the end of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. That is an AU fanfic where Harry's uncle is a nice philosophy professor who teaches him to calculate odds on everything with cold logic and rationality, and the first year at Hogwarts goes very differently. It was not a great fanfic, and certainly not our kind that centers characters, emotions and relationships, but a lot of people really loved it .
It was written as an introduction to a cult of "rationality:, which led to Effective Altruists: the ones who think climate change is no big deal but are terrified of the tiny chance they calculate that computers will become conscious (AGI - Artificial General Intelligence) and choose to destroy humanity. They are also really into cryptocurrency, like Sam Bankman-Freid. I don't really understand why they are the same guys who are doing all the AI research and starting all the AI companies, but I suspect they want some of the billions of dollars sloshing around and are arrogant enough to think they can avert any bad consequences.
This timeline is truly weird.

(Because just quietly, IMO, prefer Bryce Pinkham singing Stolas Sings AKA Owl in a Cage than Sam Haft

Me:
Feedback (scroll down only if youâve read it):
⢠I love how thereâs a backstory of Stella and how she at least tried to connect with Octavia and somewhat was more amicable with Stolas as an acting co-parent even though they donât really love each other; but would do anything for their daughter
* But in my opinion, even though this was really about Octavia and Stella, it wouldâve been nicer to have that moment with Stolas as well rather just making a small cameo here and there (I mean canonically he did majority of Octaviaâs upbringing â hence why sheâs her âdaddyâs daughterâ â up since Stella had no desire in comforting her at such a young age after having a nightmare as all kids want the comfort of their parents)
⢠I do feel like Stolas is as âditzyâ or âobliviousâ as he had been portrayed as in this fanfic, then again this could either be take from Stellaâs perspective and my biased opinion for the latter
I think, if it came to Octavia, he wouldâve just as sceptical of his daughter and her double life, because letâs not forget he is a bookworm which means he would have a lot of intellect (okay, yes, heâs not as guarded as letâs say Blitz would be) but I would say their on the same page.
However, I will acknowledge that, in my opinion, that Stolas had SOME obliviousness about the belief that Blitz loves him too in episodes 1x1 - 1x06 (til the end of âOzzieâsâ)
But again he had come to the conclusion that this wasnât the case after his failed âdateâ with Blitz after they were both humiliated by As(s)modeus and Fizzarolli (mainly)
⢠In my opinion, I felt surprised to read that Stolas got angry with Octavia for having a ânormal lifeâ and was being a little classist in the making when saying that she âcouldnâtâ be with someone who was lower of their âclassâ considering thatâs actually what he had wanted for her canonically when he and Stella were arguing (in 2x01 âThe Circusâ)
* However I will acknowledge that this little detail had been covered when Octavia told her father that he was a hypocrite for doing the same thing with Blitz
Then again, in my opinion, I felt it was weird for me in my heart because I know Stolas would never pull a âStella 2.0â he just not an elitist that way. heâs too compassionate to do that.
youtube
But other than that, with all my mixed emotions all over the place (in a good way), I can safely say, without shame, that this was the BEST fanfiction Iâve ever read. It was almost like something out of a movie I wouldâve watched
I honestly donât think there will be anything better in comparison to this. I may be a bit biased here but Iâd say that this and âTurf Warsâ (one of my own with help of a role playing partner) would be my all time favourites for sure!
Now for some positives:
Great work.
Great characters
Great storyline
Great atmosphere
Great taste in music
Great character goals
Definitely a 10/10 + a review from me and share this to your friends, family and followers! đ¤Š

Hello!
âââââââ--âââââââ
Welcome to the blog i made because i thought of it in class and i need some sort of way to feed my hyperfixation.
Here is a carrd with more info about this mess. (coming soon)
All art belongs to me!! I made it!! Please dont steal or use for ai (sense thats been getting popular recently..). And please ask before reposting and if your too nervous please at least credit me :)
(Press "Read More" below for tldr for the carrd and an ID for each image)
(Last updated: 12/10/22 11:19am CDT)
âââââââ--âââââââ
And now if you look just below youll see all the tags i use and what they mean :) (more will be added in the future)
#smajorqna - all posts posted on this blog
#4th wall breakthrough - ooc posts
#smajor of rivendell - all answers from c!scott
#hearts the creator tm - all answers/cameos from my persona, hearts
#hello deer anon - all questions from fellow anons! Hello anons :)
#(tw/cw here) - obviously wont say that exactly but if a post talks about anything triggering or anything that needs warning i will put it there and i will put it at the beginning of the post :)
#posts about beloved husband - posts mentioning or even including the one and only codfather (will be also used as flower husbands tag so if you don't wanna see that block it!!!)
#cameos - other character cameos featured
#id below read more - will be put for every post with images in it (besides dividers)
#the 17th letter of the alphabet - this post was queued
Heres the tldr of the carrd: (aka a list of things i need to add to it)
This is C!/CHARACTER!!! In no way am i impersonating scott the content creator. I am simply answering questions the way i think his esmp1 character would answer.
Admittedly, i have never watched scotts esmp1 series- i mostly know about his character through clips, fanfics, fanarts, and other fans. I know im such a fake fan /sarc so if i get any lore or canon wrong please tell me and ill do my best to fix it. If i cannot, then oh well to bad so sad.
This will include my personal headcanons so if you haven't heard of whatever even or something from canon, its most likely a headcanon
This will also include flower husbands (c!scott x c!jimmy) so uh yeah dont imply any other ships other than them only because i dont personally ship it (its fine if you do, i have nothing wrong with that :) just keep it out of this blog)
Everything you see on this blog was done on my phone using my finger. So obviously there will be mistakes. So yk use common sense and dont point them out :) its rude.
And lastly, this is literally my first time doing this ever so please be nice, im sensitive
ID for each image/panel:
[Panel 1 (one): (start id) outlined and colorless drawing of empires season 1 (one) character scott looking confused or worried, there's a question mark symbol next to him showing he's confused. He's looking at another character to the right with the same drawing style. Scott's outline/lineart is a dark cyan. To the right of scott there's a character with shortish hair, pointy ears like scotts, with a plain t-shirt. They look feminine-ish and their expression looks happy. Near them is text saying "Me, the creator tm" pointing to them. The character's outline/lineart is a dark magenta-ish, or a really red pink. On the bottom of the screen is a grey box with a smaller box on the top left corner saying "Scott" in a dark cyan. Below is text in the same color saying "So.. Remind me of what to do here..?". (End id)]
[Panel 2 (two): (start id) Same character's and poses as panel 1 (one) with different expressions. Scott's expression is still similar, except this time his mouth is closed. The character's (who's name is Hearts) expression changed to them talking with their eyes closed. They look happy. Below them is the same dialogue box except with a different name and obviously different text. The name now reads "Hearts" and the dialogue says "You're going to answer some questions from people because I'm bored and I need something better to do with my life. :)" in the same color used for Hearts' outline. (End id)]
[Panel 3 (three): (start id) Scott is now center with Hearts gone, leaving a "Bye!" where they were last. Scott then looks to the left with an exhausted look. In the dialogue box it says in the dark cyan outline scott has with scotts name above, "This will be easier said than done..." (End id)]
Also yes ik the original third panel i misspelled "easier" but its too late now im tired
#smajorqna#heres all the other tags ->#4th wall breakthrough#smajor of rivendell#hearts the creator tm#hello deer anon#posts about beloved husband#cameos#id below read more#and heres some other tags for funsies#blog intro#rp blog#ish? I basically got here after reading your eagleone fanfic and i was blown away with the fluff and then a soft fade sex đĽšđĽš
I wanted to ask though since I've seen you talk about them if that's alright? Do you think they'll bring her back for Leon in the future games? Maybe they can find a way to do it because they got rid of Aleon, to make Leon and Ashley a couple đ¤ˇ
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! <3 I am actually pretty clumsy at writing smut itself, but I'm getting there with practice, haha. It was genuinely very enjoyable to work on Sunny Relaxation (I love a good excuse to write Leon just being happy and down bad for once lmao)
And as for your question, I honestly don't think so. Capcom rarely, if ever, brings back their non-mainline characters, unless they are literally a part of that main group, so to speak. God knows we have tons of great characters that make their appearance in some title and then never return again, it's a running joke for a reason. And they are quite clearly not making big creative changes with Remake-verse. Maybe this'll change with upcoming Remakes, of course, but as of now? The story will be the same as it was in the OG games, just told differently. If anything, she might make a future appearance through some file, or even a quick lil' cameo if we're extremely lucky. But nothing more. Ashley's story has been completed in RE4R, and there is arguably no place you could put her in, in later installments. Of course, you could get a director that really loves Ashley for whatever reason, so they decide to put her in, but that's a... very big gamble to take tbh.
As I've said in a different ask, the only way I see that changing is IF (and that's a very huge 'if' mind you) Capcom decide to zero in on Remake-verse and start creating original titles for it that have no connection to the OG storyline. Be it a movie, series, or a game. Which is HIGHLY unlikely, honestly. And even if that does happen, and Ash does actually make an appearance, chances are, she'll be a side character. Which is not bad. Side characters are important. But her playing some big, vital part is just not realistic when we have a main cast of characters for that exact purpose already.
All that to not be negative tho. It's not bad that Ashley probably will not make a big return like that. And don't let anyone make you think otherwise. That doesn't make her any less valuable as a character, nor should that influence your love for her. And if that notion does make you sad, I just wanna remind you that she's safe from any shitty writing decisions on Capcom's part! Hooray! As of now, Ashley is a character that played a distinct, vital role in her title, and that's something that not every RE character has under their belt. Be proud of our girlie and continue to love her as she is!
#mia talks#listen at least she's safe from writers either butchering her or casting her aside#side eying poor jill and claire here very hard#in a perfect world#a re title gets a female director and the world is never the same again....

#reblog#pjo tv crit#im mostly replying to tags here nobody mind me
#re: prev tags - there's a bunch of stuff from TSATS that's also blatantly from tumblr posts lmao#the subway scene is literally almost word for word a tumblr post iirc#in the comments of that one college humor comic i think
#i distinctly remember a thread on it and reading TSATS and going ''thats word-for-word a tumblr post. i know it. i've read that post.''#which makes a lot of sense when you consider how just. absolutely out of place that scene feels with the rest of the book#like the book is a mess but that scene in particular is just. oh they literally just ripped it straight from tumblr. thats why its weird.
#photokinesis Will has obviously been popular fanon since 2015 and same with plague Will#even some TOA stuff is blatantly old fanon or tumblr posts. *especially* solangelo stuff#im surprised they didnt go full 2015 fanon and give him a lasso/whip made of light instead of the weird laser beam thing
#and Piper's cameo in TSATS is just not even subtly a checklist of Rick directly responding to criticism he's gotten about her character#plus that whole scene of Nico basically being outed a second time/''coming out'' to CHB that has the random list of other queer campers#but it's LITERALLY a list. just throwing names out there. like cool. zero effort. and im pretty sure also specifically common fanon ones
#anyways everybody place your bets when is somebody gonna throw an apple to their significant other/crush#fun fact - yknow the skeleton pegasus merch from the Tower of Nero book tour? yeah thats 100% ripped from fanon#thats been a fanon thing for ages before ToN. in fact i have a nearly identical design on redbubble that was up for years prior#and i know for a fact that shirt design was one of the first results for ''chb shirt'' on redbubble for ages#im not saying they ripped it off from me cause i know im not the first person to think of that but it is suspicious
#the weirdest part of it all to me is Rick is clearly like 5-10 years behind on fanon. so every time a fanon/fandom ref is included#it just feels dated and awkward. like yeah nobody has referenced that in ages. but now it's canon but fanon isn't supposed to be canon#it's often super incongruent. such as Will being retconned into TTC for TSATS because?????? fanon. fanon is why.#like he physically cannot be at chb in TTC without ruining an entire chain of stuff. there is no logical way he can exist there.#which is why he doesn't in canon! he's introduced in TLO! he can exist no earlier than BoTL!
#fanon doesnt have to follow canon logic. but that just makes it REALLY bad when it's blatantly canonized with no regard for consistency#which is why i think TSATS feels so much like a 2015 fanfic. cause it's just blatantly all 2015 fanon that isnt congruent with canon at all#anyways sorry for the tag rant thank you for coming to my tedtalk
These were too good to stay in the tags
Fun fact, I recognize most semi major plot point changes in the Percy Jackson series from Tumblr posts ďżź
The Calling Kronos grandpa thing was a Tumblr post way way way way before the show is even talked about releasing
I donât know why but it feels weird knowing that everyone is praising Rick for something he didnât do

what did you think of batdr?
So, grain of salt, at time of writing, I have not played or watched BatDR all the way through; I got it liveblogged to me by a friend (which honestly was an ideal experience) and then watched some cutscenes. INITIAL FEELINGS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
When BatDRâs release date was announced, I told friends that I thought it was going to be a pretty tight balancing act â if BatDR was REALLY GOOD, it could kill the enthusiasm for the fandom; yknow, a lot of times when you get what you actually want out of a story, the fervour fades. If BatDR was REALLY BAD, I could become too embarrassed about this franchise and not enjoy playing in it anymore. It has to be the perfect balance of messy and unresolved, but not TOO sloppy or thoughtless, and unfortunately for my ability to stop thinking about it, I think it kinda nailed it. BatDR has some heartfelt and startlingly compelling ideas that it executes sort of incoherently, which makes it FASCINATING.
The joke I keep making is that itâs not a sequel, itâs not a prequel, itâs a fanfiction. And I donât mean that as a diss â it has a fanfic off-the-rails willingness to commit to a wild, self-indulgent take and just go with it, and I think thatâs great. But itâs also sort of⌠disconnected from the original BatIM, in a way? It doesnât follow BatIMâs themes at all when you think about it. Conflicts and questions in the original game (the downfall of the Studio, Who Was The True Creator Of Bendy, etc.) are strangely brushed aside in this game, rather than developed or resolved.Â
Which is why you get weird things like, thereâs a REAL ACTUAL NEAR-PERFECT TOON BENDY wandering around, but the original BatIM characters (Joey, Henry, Sammy; people youâd expect to have some kind of big feelings about a true toon Bendy) donât ever get to interact with him because their feelings on toon Bendy arenât the point here. BatDR explains what the loop in BatIM was, but thatâs not something you discover yourself, because the loop is obsolete now â itâs just explained briefly in order to get to the real focus of this game, Joey Drew having a daughter. Even before you get to timeline questions/possible inconsistencies, the game feels less to me like an actual sequel that builds on the previous game, and more like a neat AU with its own headcanons bouncing off of and interpreting the previous game.Â
Anyway, some random specific thoughts that come to mind:
They really coulda done something with the family theme if theyâd just had Wilson go ahead and say who he was early on. Why did that have to be a surprise? I donât think saving it really added anything.
Everything about Audrey being Joeyâs daughter is AMAZING and I canât stop thinking about this. Absolutely fascinating development. Have a lot of conflicting feelings on how this was handled but THATS FOR ANOTHER POST; I really do like this, though.
"Something he had always wanted, but could never have: A family." SO JOEY'S LIKE, CANONICALLY GAY IN THE GAMES TOO NOW, RIGHT??? THAT'S PRETTY CLEAR CUT????? LIKE ITS THE MOST OBVIOUS REASON JOEY COULDNT HAVE A FAMILY BEFORE??? HES A GAY SINGLE DAD!!!!
I RLY LIKE THE DESIGNS FOR HENRY AND JOEY. I was surprised to find that the way my brain parsed them was like, theyâre the designs for the BatDR AU. Like BatDR is a new fan showing off their designs for their crew, and Iâm drawing fanart for their cool AU.
The Ink Demon/ Bendy stuff uh, resolved very strangely. Am very into Bendy and the Ink Demon being the same entity but wish that had been explored a little more!
I actually like Sammyâs cameo(s). Iâve always gotten the feeling that the creators of BatIM were never entirely sure what we all saw in Sammy, so if they didnât have anything they were particularly hyped to do with him, I think cameos were the right call. The Subject 418 moment is PERFECT. NO NOTES. His 5 seconds before getting shot at the end is like, itâs silly that he died immediately and we all joke about it, but also thereâs an element of OH, IM SO GLAD HE GOT TO BE HERE FOR THIS for me, too.
GENT being all OOOOO LOOK AT ALL THEIR SUPER UNETHICAL SCIENCE, LOOK HOW SINISTER THEY ARE is kinda uninteresting to me. Something like, a single audiolog going âhuh, thatâs weird, when GENT left for their new building, all the ink left, tooâŚ.â would be way more unsettling than explicit confirmation of GENT taking over and doing lethal human experimentation. And like, idk, I feel one of the things that made BatIM compelling was that it had all these spooky tropes, but motivated by a startlingly mundane desire â people believing in a cartoon so strongly that it accidentally veers into unhinged science and dark occult worship along the way. As soon as theyâre just doing normal unethical science with ambiguous motives that seem totally disconnected from the studio, it becomes kinda generic.
Nothing about Wilson is coherent, to the extent that I honestly wonder if the original plan for Wilson was different and he had to be shuffled around for some reason.
What else happened in this gameâŚ.. Im glad alice got a murder party but I donât know why sheâs here. That One Scene with her and Allison feels very fanservicey but not in a bad way lmao.
Probably other stuff but I think this post is long enough!!
#batdr spoilers#batdr#we all write on the walls#i started talking about wilson and it immediately turned into two paragraphs so MAYBE I'LL COME BACK TO THAT LATER LMAO#what a wild game to exist

The Owl House and pacing, a perspective from a fanfic writer that works with a large cast
Iâve seen a bunch of complains about the way The Owl House is paced lately. People claiming that itâs bad writing, and rushed, and whatnot. But from how I see it, youâre complaining for all the wrong reasons, and to the wrong people.
TL;DR: this is an overlaying issue with Disney and the industry that doesnât allow long shows anymore, essentially forcing writers to pick between good pacing and complex stories being told with large casts.
For context: the fandom I wrote for before I got into The Owl House had a pretty small main cast. There were a few reoccurring characters, but most of them only showed up like five total times over the course of four seasons or had little personality, so my main cast I was writing about always consisted of my main five characters, with occasional cameos here and there. All characters were living together and experienced the adventure from the same perspective. There was one overarching storyline and not multiple. The interpersonal relationships still varied, though, for obvious reasons.
Now think about how large The Owl House cast is, and why thatâd send them running into issues. Or donât, because I have a whole-ass in depth analysis under the cut because this got unreasonably long.
(Also Iâd appreciate a reblog, I spent⌠an unreasonable amount of time on this, lol)
The Owl House is different. Thereâs the main characters: Luz, Eda, King, maybe Hooty, technically (someone recently pointed out that heâs technically the titular character of the show and Iâm still processing that, lol).
But they also have a HUGE additional cast to work with. Thereâs Lilith, Edaâs sister, and the main antagonist of season one, who has a lot to her character and gets a ton of screen time. Thereâs Amity, and thereâs Willow and Gus, Luzâs friends. Theyâre all very fleshed out characters, and got a bunch of screen time and development, despite âonlyâ being reoccurring characters and not the main characters.
Then thereâs characters that have played a fairly minor role so far. Thereâs Belos, the big bad villain, who we will likely learn a lot more about this season. Thereâs the Golden Guard, the new main antagonist our cast deals with personally, who weâre just starting to learn more about. Thereâs Camila, Luzâs mom, who, despite only showing up a couple of times in the show so far, is very relevant to Luz and how the plot will ultimately turn out. Thereâs Edric and Emira, Amityâs siblings, who despite only showing up a few times as well seem to have a very worked out personality and background and also have a story that is (at least to some extent) going to be told according to the AMA.
There is at least one more seemingly important character whose role in the bigger story is hard to tell at this point, Raine, but according to the description of the episode, theyâre probably going to influence the story a bunch.
Thereâs Alador and Odalia, who are responsible for a lot of their childrenâs toxic behaviors, and seem to have bigger plans that will probably be relevant later on.
The characters that are only focused on for an episode or two (like Matt and the troublemaker kids) all have very worked out personalities and even short arcs.
And heck, even characters like Boscha, who is extremely minor and seems like a very one-dimensional bully for the most part, get their moments that hint at there being more to them. We know Boscha has a clingy mom, that apparently has a rivalry with Odalia and works with Amityâs parents. The scene at the beginning of Wing It Like Witches tells us a lot about her general mindset and how sheâs embraced that winning at whatever cost is the only thing that matters.
This leaves us with: 3-4 main characters
3 friends with fleshed out stories
Lilith, who is probably the most relevant aside from the main cast
Belos, the main antagonist, and the Golden Guard, currently starting to become a lot more relevant
A whole handful of minor reoccurring characters that have the potential to become bigger characters at any point in time
A handful of minor reoccurring characters that mainly seem to be there to further the story, but still get to have distinctive personalities and motivations (looking p.e. at the troublemaker kids)
That is AT LEAST 9 pretty major, relevant characters whose stories have to be tackled in the same show, in addition to the people that joined in season two and a huge supporting cast of well-developed characters that clearly also have stories of their own, even if not all of them will get told.
On top of that, the Owl House lives from exploring different relationships and different storylines. Thereâs the overarching story of how flawed the system is that will likely end with them overthrowing Belos, but thereâs so much more.
Eda and the curse. Eda becoming a better mentor for Luz. Eda coming to terms with the loss of her magic.
Luz learning to cast magic with glyphs. Making friends for the first time. Slowly falling in love with Amity. Fighting to be able to learn whatever kind of magic she wants to. Learning that sheâs not a burden to people. Struggling with her relationship with her mom, and trying to restore the portal so she can get back to her. Figuring out her future and what she really wants.
Lilith trying to cure Eda, and now in season two coming to terms with the loss of her magic and fixing her relationship with her sister. Lilith learning to ask for help.
Willow switching tracks. Willow growing more confident.
Amity becoming a better person, fixing her relationship with Willow, standing up to her parents, falling in love with Luz. Starting to fix her relationship with her siblings.
King finding out where he came from.
Hints at Gus struggling with decision making and stressing himself out less. Gus learning to be more selfless. Struggling with his magic track and being the youngest in his grade.
The newly introduced plot point with the Golden Guard. The plot point about the rebellion that will get introduced next episode.
The mystery with the letters.
And Iâm like 90% sure Iâve forgotten something.
That is⌠a lot of different plots and relationships that are in some way important to the story.
In comparison, as stated, the last show I wrote for focused mostly on the same five characters and their relationships with each other, and one overarching plotline aside from some minor interpersonal relationships with two peopleâs family members that werenât even introduced for several seasons. The first season fully focused on establishing the bond within this found family with exactly 1 important reoccurring character, an antagonist that had little personality and got a total of one line of backstory before he died.
If you have 90% of a season to develop 5 characters who live together, thatâs a lot easier to do than developing twice the amount of important characters + introducing reoccurring characters season one of The Owl House hasâthe majority of which have separate lives and do not live together and thus canât be focused on at the same time.
Iâve seen a bunch of people complain recently that the pacing of The Owl House is off, that the writing is bad, that the show is rushed, etc. etc.
And I get those complains. Believe me, as a viewer and also as an author that takes a lot of time to develop each character and their issues individually, I 100% get it.
But as an author thatâs currently learning how hard it is to tackle a cast of the size that The Owl House has, Iâve also come to a whole different understanding from the perspective of the writers on the show.
For context, Locked Out focuses on a couple of serious themes, in the same way that the show does. It has 4 main plotlines: Amity Camila and Luz, Edric and Emira, Eda and Lilith, Willow and the Grudgby Squad (as well as a Gus arc that ties into the last one while also being its own thing, weâre getting to that part). So far, it prominently features: Luz, Amity, Camila, Eda, Emira, Edric, Willow and Gus, and to a lesser extent King, Lilith and Boscha, Skara and Amelia in relation to the separate plots.
Thatâs eight main characters across five different households. And then thereâs the reoccurring characters that will have a larger role later on that Iâve not even had the opportunity to bring into the story yet/feature in a more prominent way. The cast is still growing.
And heck, I have all the time in the world to write this thing, because I donât have an episode limit, or a deadline, or a limited amount of money to produce it.
For Locked Out, it took me 120k to get through a single week of plot at a very high level of character development, with about as many important characters as TOH has in season 1, and with an equally high number of reoccurring characters, some minor, some major. I think you can compare it to the show pretty well. Iâd say, if I were to split Locked Out into episodes, Iâd set one episode at about 10k. That would be 12 episodes. 12 episodes to get through a single week. Heck, even if I said 20k words were to be one episode, which Iâm pretty sure is too much realistically, that would still be 6 episodes for one week.
And TOH covers more than three months.
That would be at least 72 total episodes to get through the three months of summer camp. And weâre currently progressing past that point.
72 episodes.
Let that sit for a while o.o
Everything thatâs happened in season one (which as we know now was about 2 months) would have happened in 48 episodes rather than 19. Pacing-wise, everything would happen at less than 0.5x the speed. The first four episodes of season two wouldâve been 24 episodes, assuming we hadnât skipped a week and a half and had instead shown the immediate aftermath of the petrification ceremony, too.
And Iâd love if we could have that, and if we could actually develop the characters and their relationships that thoroughly.
But the sad fact is that shows like The Owl House do not get the amount of episodes that would be required to develop every single aspect of the show to its fullest potential. Disney rarely greenlits shows of 150 episodes anymore. They used to, once, (Phineas&Ferb for example had 130+ episodesâyou could tell one hell of a story in that many episodes), but thatâs not a thing anymore. And the writers know that going into a show. They know the chances their story will be told in that way are very low.
And thus, the writers, especially ones working with large casts, have to make a choice: cut characters they love, and plots that are important to them, because they know they wonât get the amount of episodes required to do everything perfectly, OR include most of what they want to do, but at the cost of the pacing being off and everything seemingly happening too fast.
The Owl House crew went with the second option. The biggest issue the show has isnât bad writing. The showâs biggest issue is that its cast and the story the crew members want to tell are too big for the amount of episodes theyâve been given (especially now that Disney decided to cut season 3 down into just three 44 minute specials).
And thatâs on Disney, and Disney alone.
The crew is making the most of the amount of episodes they have, and unfortunately the lack of time forces them to rush things, and to sometimes sideline characters to focus on others.
Lilith got a bunch of screen time in the first four episodes. Iâm sad to see her go, but sheâs basically guaranteed to be back by season 2B. And thereâs other people that have gotten way less focus than her so far. Weâve seen basically nothing of Willow and Gus for the first few episodes, and Iâm super happy Gus finally got some focus! We havenât been inside Hexside all season except to see Luz expelled! And episode seven is even going to introduce a new character. Sometimes thereâs parts of the story that certain characters donât have a place in. And it sucks if theyâre characters you like. But Lilith has to go for a bit so other characters can get the same amount of spotlight she did. At the end of the day, Lilith is not part of the main cast. Sheâs a very important reoccurring character, yes, but so are Amity, Willow and Gus. The main characters are Eda, Luz and King, and theyâre the only ones that will always be around. And heck, even Eda got sidelined for a bit in the last two episodes, because we needed to focus on other characters. If not even the main characters are always around because we need some spotlight time for other characters, you canât expect any more minor reoccurring cast member to be.
God, I wish theyâd be given more time and more episodes to bring every part of the plot to its full potential, but they donât have those, so they sometimes have to take shortcuts that unfortunately cheapen the story here and there. Itâs the only way they can hope to tell their story to the end at all. And that makes me hella sad because itâs so obvious that they have an incredible story to tell, and that thereâs so much more to so many of the characters we just donât have the time to focus on.
The thing is: I liked the episode with Gwendolyn. It sends an important message that will hopefully get some parents who watch with their children thinking, and Iâve seen a couple of people talk about how close to home it hit for them. I have also seen a couple of people complain about that being too fastâand also just in general about things in the show getting sorted out too fast. And I get it. At least with this particular episode, I 100% get it.
(Iâve also seen some people complain that âAmity stood up to her parents too fast in Escaping Expulsionâ, but I vehemently disagree with that. Weâve been building towards that moment since season one, with her doing more and more things that were technically defying her parents. I donât see how this was rushed.)
Just⌠please donât blame the writers. Dana even said that Keeping Up A-Fearances is one of the episodes that hit very close to home for her in the recent stream iirc? So I highly doubt this was rushed on purpose, or because the whole thing is âbad writingâ when the entire writing quality of the show says otherwise.
A lot of shows in general have the issue that they have to be written season by season rather than as a full story these days, because thereâs always a chance that they wonât get a next season. How large scale the story they want to tell actually is doesnât matter if thereâs a solid chance they wonât get to do any of it.
From a viewer perspective, I get being frustrated at the pacing being off. But from a writer perspective, the chances are very high that this is a choice they had to make, rather than one they wanted to make. And I donât think you can truly see this if youâve never worked with a fleshed out cast that largeâLocked Out was really eye-opening for me in that regard.
This isnât simply a case of bad writing/bad pacing by choice. Itâs forced. Theyâre forced to rush through their plots because otherwise they wonât get the chance to tell certain parts of the story at all. And the saddest thing about this is really that those 72+ episodes to flesh out these plot points further wouldnât have been an impossible thing to get, at a time.
Go for Disneyâs head. Yell at the industry for being what it is today, for constantly axing shows before even giving them a real chance. But this isnât on the crew.

I have finally made peace (somewhat) with the Bad Batch show
I still am unsatisfied with how they did things, namely Crosshair's dechipped reveal and the over abundance of cameos. I also feel like most of the time and effort went into the animation. Which admittedly is ASTOUNDING compared to Season 1 of the clone wars. The pacing is still a bit odd, and I feel the Infested ep should DEFINITELY have come before Ryloth.
But all that aside, I've come to accept something
It just wasn't made for me
Let me explain
TLDR at the end for those with ADD like myself
I felt often that the episodes lacked the deeper "omph" that some episodes in the clone wars had. There was angst, yes, but it wasn't really explored or fleshed out. Things kinda happened more for shock value (ex. civvie BBQ, dechipping, ect) and then weren't ever... mentioned again??? Crosshair, forced against his will to brutally murder unarmed civvies alive, only to never have it mentioned again. That's no small incident. The Crosshair from tcw would definitely have felt deep rooted and visceral horror at what he'd done, even if he didn't say it aloud. Because he's not evil.
You don't just brush something like that off. Admittedly, we do see him reflect at the end of that episode but then we just... move on. It is never brought up again. His abandonment gets a bit more spotlight, with that absolutely gut-wrenching speech in episode 15. Even still, it doesn't go as deep into it as I feel it could.
Ultimately, much of my issue boils down to that; things weren't really addressed in-depth like I felt they should be. Many of my fellow Bad Batch stans have the same thought. There are many fans out there who have, in my opinion, written the Batch better than the show-writers. I myself have gotten the same praise, which is not to brag but to point out that even those writing for purely hobby's sake go in-depth with the characters and their issues.
Thing is... we go deeper into these issues, into what should be broken men, because of one critical factor.
Our target audience is NOT a bunch of kids.
The Bad Batch show, per IMDb, is rated TV-PG. PG. That's for kids. Just like the Clone Wars.
I was eight when the Clone Wars movie came out. EIGHT. Why did I watch it? Cool lightsabers, neat character designs, kick-ass action sequences, and intriguing plots. NOT deep and intricate characterizations. Hell, half of it probably went right over my head. Because I was a KID. Kids aren't really gonna get the deeper meaning of things. Ask a eight year old to read Shakespeare and see what happens. They don't care. They care about action or cool visual effects.
The Clone Wars, and by extension Rebels, did mature as the seasons went on, but that's probably because the audience who started with Season 1 was also more mature. They could better understand the death. The corruption. The deeper, more adult themes.
Many of us fanfic writers, or at least those in my circle, are 17+ verging on 18+. My material is not for kids. Or even teens at some points. I can delve into things like PTSD, abandonment, perfectionism, trauma, abuse, and so on. Because I'm not targeting young kids; I'm targeting people around my age. Those who too grew up with the clone wars and deeply yearn for a different outcome. A different outcome where the galaxy didn't fall. The clones got their freedom. And the musty crusty dusty raisin choked on a grapefruit.
My audience is different. As such, I'm going to tackle topics a completely different way. Ways that no kid, or sometimes even teen should be exposed to.
Writing is an art, and a hella difficult one at that. Especially when aimed at kids. Even if you want to explore the character on a deeper level, you can't. Not if you want the rating to stay the same. A kid will look at Crosshair's speech and go "yeah he's hurt". But they probably won't think too much of it.
I didn't realized the true terror of the mind control worms. I didn't think too much of Pond's death. Umbara didn't horrify and scar me. It was only when Ahsoka underwent the hell that she did that I really felt impacted by the show. Because at that point, I was 12 almost 13. And I'd been attached to Ahsoka for years, so saying goodbye to her was saying goodbye to my childhood. But if you showed me that exact same scene at 8, I would have just "noo!! she's leaving!" and then jumped to something else.
Because that's how kids are. They don't really get the deeper "what's happening here". Looking back they will, just how looking back we all are like "bro what were those early kid's movies ON that is NOT child friendly" (Pink Elephants in Dumbo, the entirety of All Dogs Go to Heaven, ect). Another example? That scene in the Patriot (2000) where the surrendering soldier got shot in the face? I remember very vividly my seventh grade classmates laughing. Kids and very young teens arenât exactly gonna take dark things seriously.
The Bad Batch isn't meant to be a deeper, thought provoking show with convoluted and twisted morals, showing the horrible and dark reality of war.
It's a kids show.
For kids.
Hence Omi. She's the tether for the kids. As such, the topics cannot get overly dark. But when they do, they can only be shown at surface level. Something that, to an older audience (such as myself) comes across as shallow and lazy.
Do I still wish they did things differently? Yes. Do I prefer my/others version over the show? Yes. Will I still grumble about things? Most likely yes. Will I make shots at canon in my fics? Hell yeah, its fun.
Here's the thing.
You're allowed to complain! You're allowed to hate something! You're allowed to wish they did something differently! Welcome to media consumption!
But you can't go into a kids' show with adult expectations and then be surprised when it doesn't meet those expectations. If you want a animated series catered to adults, watch Arcane. The Bad Batch show, a show rated PG, is simply not for you.
Additionally, you most certainly cannot bash others who like the show/characters. The amount of hate I see towards Omi, a literal child, is sickening. Do I like her within the context of the show? Not really, no. I feel like her presence limits how dark they can go, and I also feel like she replaced Crosshair as the marksman. But do I hate Omi herself? NO. She's the new generation's Ahsoka.
TLDR;
The Bad Batch is made for kids, and judging it by adult standards will just leave you disappointed. I know, because I did the exact same thing and have suffered for it.

"Someday, I wanna try grub made from Plants!" _ Worm hunter nomad guy in Episode 4. That's your answer. Plants are generators that "take stuff from the higher dimension" - so they're dimensional bridges and one supposes that there are food generators of some kind. I have no idea if there are Plants out there that just poop out sandwiches or (more likely, I think) ones that do, indeed spit out wheat and flour, slabs of meat cloned from cattle / pigs / chicken / fish. (I had a headcanon years ago with the original Trigun that the salmon sandwiches that Vash eats in the manga are made of cat food because the people from Earth brought cats with them. - You don't see them except as an easily missed cameo in Stampede, but "Lady Black Cat" is all over the original anime and manga). The earlier iterations of Trigun ('98 in particular) do feature people struggling to grow crops in the sandy soil, so flora is more known in those versions. Also there is a fight over an area that was greened out from a vein shooting off from a Geo-Plant between a family that carefully cultivated the land and a businessman with hired thugs trying to take it. They eat tomas. Tomas aren't just steed-animals, they're food. We learn this in Badlands Rumble when dried toma meat is sold on a sandsteamer in the opening parts. Vash buys a hunk of dried toma to eat on his journey. It actually becomes a very weird plot point (that I will not spoil you for). Apparently, if you make toma-jerky, it turns out like bonito-tuna, just this rock-hard stuff you have to flake off with a knife. Cannibalism carries the same moral gravity and taboo as it does in our world. There is a note of it happening later on in the manga in places when things get really holy shit quotient BAD. Also, a lot of people headcanon that Legato practices cannibalism because of a certain scene involving a hot dog that's just... too creepy. I once wrote an entire-ass fanfic speculative-worldbuilding about food in Trigun.
Something iâve been super interested in, especially knowing about orangeâs world bible, is what food is like on nomansland. Thereâs the odd comment about eating worms, as well as the line about pizza/donuts depending on the language- what if theyâre not like the kind we eat here?
If Meryl, miss top of her class, was that surprised to see flora, what do people usually eat? Obviously edible plants are different appearance wise, and they get other resources from plants (unclear? They mention amino acids or something specific- how the fuck does that work?), but I canât imagine theyâre spitting out wheat or something for flour? Does anything grow native to the planet that we just donât know about? Not a cactus or itâs analogue in sight, but maybe itâs tubers of some kind? Fungi?????
What sort of weird shit did people look at, shrug, and decide âthatâs dinnerâ? Is worm meat a weird texture like seafood or is it something like beef or chicken? Does it smell? Do people cook it a certain way to hide either those things?
Hell, kind of a depressing thought, but you KNOW theyâre eating tomas. No way in hell they let that go to waste.
Horrible, no good, very bad follow up thought, what if cannibalism is like. A problem. I mean, if theyâre already dead, and resources are that tight⌠Hey, I didnât like that guy too much anyway, did you? No?
Many, MANY thoughts. Head full.

Ducktales Finale Review: The Last Adventure! or So Long and Thanks for All The Ducks
Hello all you happy people. The day weâve all simultaneously waited for and dreaded is here. The grand finale to a five year journey.. and for me an almost one year journey of covering season 3 as it came out. It was thanks to this show iâve been able to make money doing what I love. Without it I never wouldâve found my patreon Kev, and I never woulâdve had the solid focus to keep going as long as I have. And I never wouldâve had all you lovely people reading my work. Thank you for that. I hope youâll stick around even though the series is gone, I love you all. But as the sun sets on this series I have one last episode of the season, and the series to cover. I wonât be doing it in my usual recap style due to itâs sheer length and scope, but I promise you if you join me under the cut I will break down eveyrthing I can about this final adventure, itâs huge, awe inspiring twists.. and itâs heartwarming conclusion. Itâs everything you could want from a finale short of a Grandma Duck Cameo, and iâts under the cut with full spoilers. Seriously if you do not want any spoilers TURN BACK NOW. Iâm opening with probably the biggest spoiler of the finale.Â
I Think Sheâs A Clone Now You were warned. So.. Webby is Scroogeâs Clone, made by FOWL as part of a decades long scheme to find the papyrus of binding, and raised by Beakly to keep this precious child out of their sinister clutches. I have hundreds of reaction images, several for what the fuck.. none of them seem sufficient.. ALL OF THEM together like some megazord of what the fuck are not sufficient for how much this reveal caught me off guard. It caught ALL of us off guard. Iâm sure even those who called it still were suprised thatâs the direction it took. I think we all expected her parents died by FOWL, or her parents were FOWl with Pepper being one of them, or anything else. So naturally it took around 14 drafts, and me going the fuck to sleep as I had stayed up to watch the finale and thought I could just smoothly transition into writing the review despite there being a LOTTTTT to unpack.
Even after the recharge though this took a bit of doing... so now iâve done it... whatâd I think? Whelp....
I liked it. I like it the more I think about it. Even the problems I had with it just kinda melted away as I thought about it. I understand if you do not. This twist will not be for everyone, it changes Webbyâs character and story entirely, ruins tons of fan theories, and in general is batshit even for a series that in the same finale, turned Manny into a shout out to Gargoyles, complete with Keith âMy Body is Readyâ David. This series is genuinely batshit and loves it, but this is a LOT to ask dramatically, a lot to rewrite expectation wise and a lot to thinka bout. Thereâs a reason besides sleep deprevation it took me a whlie to fully grasp how I felt. So if you donât like it fine, but iâm going to make my best case.Â
Starting with something that made me realize I fully like it: It dosenât invalidate Webbyâs charcter. The one little problem I had left was âWell dosenât Webby having the McDuck bloodline mean she couldnât be specail if she wasnât a McDuck? That sure the rest of the cast are specail but you canât be really important without it?â Honestly.. no. Webby is who she is not because sheâs a McDuck.. but because sheâs Webby. She got her martial arts and mystery solving skills through Beakly and being raised. She had intate talent sure.. but as weâve seen with the boys through the whole series, talent has to be honed. Skill has to be earned and learned. Webby worked hard to research other civilizations, worked hard to hone herself into a deadly fighting machine with her motherâs help, worked hard to be every bit as cool as her idol who turned out to be her biological dad. She earned her badassery, her wisdom and her courage SQUARE.Â
And more than that sheâs her own person. Her adoptive parent and biological parent are both paranoiacs afraid of betryal, unwilling to trust, and slow to let anyone in. By all accounts Webby should be the same.. but sheâs not. Oh sure she has some paranoia and is willing to slit some throats, she was raised by the worldâs best spy and is the daughter of the worldâs greatest hero, that was never going to be gone entirely. But at her core she just wants to trust people. She just wants to love them and be loved. And.. thatâs why her family loves her. Because sheâs the kindest, the warmest and the best of them. They love her because sheâs Webby and thatâs sheâs family, they could care less who sheâs related to. All it really changes is how Scrooge acts around her and that gives us fans tons to work with.Â
Itâs also expertly revealed, which helped ease us into it. Webby is just as shocked and confused as we are and is seriously hurt, which makes her vulnerable to the villains. Kate Miccui deserves a goddamn award for voice acting and if their isnât an award show for that their should be. While sheâs been fantastic with Webby all series long this is her finest performance, going from Webbyâs usual self, to all the hurt she goes through.. to her quitter moments at the end, calling Scrooge dad and giving out a little noise that makes it clear as Beakly tries to leave, that no.. sheâ still her family.. sheâs still her mom and sheâs not going anywhere.Â
As for the concept being a bit ridiculous yes it is.. but so is this universe. This universe is entirely insane in the best fucking way possible: I mean.. look at this final group shot.Â
We have an old man whose somehow still alive simply because he was too busy to die, an inventor whose cloned himself multiple times so clones are fesable and is probably a clone himself given how the last finale went, an awkward armored superhero and his biotech filled girlfriend, a small boy robot weapon of discretion who put his head on his brotherâs body, a no longer headless manhorse former harbinger of the apocalypse with the silky voice of keith david as one big homage to gargoyles, a lesbian living shadow and her sister, a superhero who based himself on a fictional character and his boyfriend/sidekick who by all accounts should be dead by now, a lesbian military superheroine from the moon, STORKULES COCKBLOCKER OUT OF MYTH, his moong goddes sister, two adopted family stunt pilots, a bunch of super intelligent mice, an odd duck whose kinda sorta dating a giant shrimp, his cousin with super luck powers, my globetrotting boys, an immortal treasure hunter and in the family proper: a former spy turned adopted mom of a clone, a woman who lived on the moon for a good decade, a man who once trapped everyone in what would essentially be the plot of the mcuâs second best work by pure accident, a blue boy whose piloted a plain, captained pirates, and has his own talk show, a green boy whose ran a multi-trillion dollar company, nearly destroyed all of time and space and is under investigation for fraud, and a red boy who has a hulk-esque rage filled embodiment of all his suppressed emotions, whose fondest wish was tall legs, and who can easily take out a giant magica supermachine with some fancy wiring. So the richest duck in the world having a clone daughter, while divisvie and what not.. is far more plausable than we give it credit for. As are her new sisters who Id inât forget but are part of the whole twist.Â
So yeah, I like the twist and my nitpick is more that despite having a full season to set it up.. they saved it for the last episode. Instead of BUILDING on Webbyâs desire to know more about her family and having the twins show up earlier.. itâs all shove into the finale. Itâs a well done shoving but thereâs so much that could be explored with Webby being Scroogeâs daughter, so much that futzes with the regular family dynamics and we don'tâ get any of it. Sure it was probably saved for a possible season 4 but they treated this season as the last. Manny being an apocalyptic man horse voiced by the uber sexy keith david, and no I will not stop bringing that up even outside of itâs own section and why yes it is getting itâs own section, is the kind of revelation you can leave for one last episode. âOne of the main cast is a cloneâ really isnât and thatâs disapointing.Â
Especially since thinking back to life and times.. Webby IS a lot like Scrooge was before circumstance hardened him. Sheâs tough, resourceful.. but also has a peppy spirit to her. It adds interesting shades to her character, where she zigs where Scrooge zags, how much of it is her upbringing with Granny versus his with his parents, how much did Beakley play into it. Thereâs A lot to dig into and given I have most of the series left to review, I will get to dig into it, and thereâs a lot to be explored in fanfic so if I wasnât already planning a massive one before I sure as fuck am now. So itâs not a bad twist nor bad we get to write the future.. but I do wish the crew THEMSELVES had done more with it. Still my bar for ânot fucking up the entire showâ is pretty low after Star Vs ended with her committing implied genocide to stop a genocide and How I Met Your Mother ended âBut the real journey was in how much I want to bang, bang bangity bang I said a bang bang bangity bang your aunt robin now your mother conveniently diedâ. I can handle âThis twist is kind of weird but also really intresting.â If the twist isnât for you, as I said i get it. This is my opinion. Now for the thing I wonât shut up about.Â
I LIVE AGAIN:
Look iâve made no secret how thirsty I am for Keith David nor how much of a national treasure I rightly believe him to be. Heâs one of my faviorite voice actors, with a mind boggling number of awesome rolls, mostly recently as a fowl mouthed coffe cup encouraging a teacher to sabotage his rival teachers breaks on close enough. Even if I didnât like Gargoyles, which I do, iâd have an entire section talking about that Manny reveal.Â
Manny was already objectively one of the best parts of the show, a hilariously weird addition that was also relatable as he just wanted to fit in. I did not know you could make him better. Then they gave him Keith Davidâs voice and revealed heâs one of the four horseman of the apocalypse, but doesnât want to end the world he just wants to be a normal dude, AND turned him into a shout out to the last part of the disney afternoon they hadnât touched, my favorite part of it and a show iâve been sitting on watching in full for far too long. Motherfucking Gargoyles.Â
But given how unique it was for the Disney Afternoon and how much Disney had no desire to ever reference or use the franchise, still no fucking clue as to why they are sitting on money here, I expected it to be sadly but understandably left out. Instead they made Manny into an expy for them, gave him the voice of their leader Goliath, the voice of an angel, and had him say âI LIVE AGAINâ complete with the utterly transcendent theme song. Seriously give it a listen.Â
youtube
So yeah I couldnât not mark out at this. Amazing fucking stuff and almost as unexpected as the clone thing and easily my second faviorite part of the fiinale only NARROWLY topped by the curtain call. Which weâll get to. Keith David took his time getting to this series but they saved the best guest voice for last. Utter tremendous.Â
Huey Season?: Iâll save more of this for my breakdown as the season as a whole but yeah while the finale as a whole was good.. I do feel Huey got short changed. He got PLENTY of development this season, and some REALLY good scenes with Bradford.. but ultimately he got overshadowed by the Webby thing. it just never quite felt like Huey got a real resolution to his character arc the way his brothers did. He still got some REALLY good moments, his âJust cough up the information Bentina!â was one of his finest and Danny Pudi did his best. The BUILDUP was good but hte payoff was non existant and easily the weakest part of an otherwise triumphant finale. I feel the final plot was ultimately just a bit too jam packed to really have Huey feel vital to it the way Dewey was to the Della arc and Louie was to his own arc. Both tgot big emotional payoffs in his finale but the most I could gather here was he accepted adventure? I guess. It just really feels off, like I missed the payoff to everything when itâs probably just nonexistent and that bothers me a lot. In a finale that was almost all hit.. this was easily the biggest misstep. I donât have as much to say here on it.. but thatâs because itâs really that simple: they gave Hueyâs arc a ton of build up in this last episode and some of his others, really made him into Bradfordâs good counterpart.. then just sorta.. forgot it because âoh shit Webbyâs scroogeâs daughter kinda need to pull focus hereâ. Had they given this arc at least one more episode, we might of had time for it. Granted iâm not sure how much they could get away with but we clearly needed at least one more episode and what they chose to jettision, the climax to Hueyâs story.. was way more important than they clearly thought and iâm heavily disappointed.Â
Bradfordâs Big Hole Speaking of payoffs the missing mysteries payoff.. is a mixed bag. I expected all of them to combine some how into some elaborate plan I just wasnât seeing. In hindsight it does make sense that wasnât it: Bradford hates overcomplicated schemes, so his would be incredibly simple and require as few moving parts as possible. It still dosenât stop the fact that the big plan to cap off the entire series built over a season... was to build a giant stygian hole of non existence to throw people into.Â
Yes really. Instead of using the Payprus to write them out of existance, if carefully worded or try doing it all at once or anything practical.. Bradford just plans to shove everything he dosenât want in the world anymore into a hole. Look iâts not like it ruins the episode, thereâs still tons of tension from him holding Scroogeâs loved ones over his hole and threating to throw them into itâs gaping void. And itâs foiled by a 12 year old just.. shutting it off. Like I get him leaving an off switch on, thatâs just common sense.. but why wouldnât he have a remote or something to turn it back on? one with a password or something to lock it. Thereâs something inherently underwhelming about as series ending plan that can be summed up âhope no one shuts my unguarded hole. â
The finale does make for it by using the missing mysteries all in VERY clever ways. In fact every episode in the season had some sort of payoff here. Itâs what makes up for how baffling the main plan is: every other thing, from the missing mysteries to the guest stars has lead up to this one moment, this one final adventure. Which leads me too
An Hurricane of Payoffs:
So from the top Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks!: Isabella Finch herself ends up being VITAL to the story and to Bradfordâs backstory, as does Junior Woodchucking as a whole. Quack Pack!: Gene is the fuel for Blotâs glove.. though he also fucks off right afterwords.. never to be seen again or help out at any point...
Double-O-Duck in You Only Crash Twice!: This was the most unexpected and elevated the episode in hindsight for me as what seemed like a waste of time.. wound up setting up the first part of the finale, and the final battle with Steelbeak, and in clever ways with Steelbeak using the intelliray on himself, Launchpad muttering the map in his sleep via his smart self and Dewey remembering the base layout.Â
The Lost Harp of Mervana: Used as a lie detector for that heartbreaking interrogation scene.Â
Louieâs Eleven: Introduced Daisy setting up Donaldâs plot which iâll get to.Â
Astro BOYD: My baby boy comes back for this episode! He also gets one of the best lines of it âIâm a Head!â. That is the most ralph wiggum the boy has ever been. Iâm so proud.Â
Rumble For Ragnarok: Okay I was wrong nothing from this one comes back. Still a great episode. Same with the trickening. Both are VERY stellar episodes though, so I give it a pass. You canât give a nod to EVERYTHING.Â
The Phantom and the Sorceress: The Blot and Super Sayian God Super Sayian Lena, as well as Lenaâs character development from said episode. They Put a Moonlander on the Earth!: Launchpad helping Penny realize her purpose. Forbidden Fountain: Jeeves is un-babied as a trap Letâs Get Dangerous!: Drake and Gosalyn Return, and Solageoâs Circut ends up being vital to the climax.. in the strangest and funnest way to say possible but still. It counts. Escape from the Impossibin: Beakleyâs near breakdown at the idea FOWL has come back. It was already heartbreaking and the first adventure had made it even more so.. but now itâs out and out DEVISTATING. The one thing after her daughter is not only back.. but SHEâS the reason heâs in Scroogeâs life and home and her giving up SHUSH has now left her wide open.Â
The Split Sword: Probably the best out of all of these as it ends up directly playing into the climax in an awesome way iâm saving for Bradfords New Gods: Storkules shows up. Okay so that every episode claim bit me on the ass. Also when did these two meet? I mean probably at end of spear of selene but the more important question is WHY DID YOU ROBÂ ME OF THESE TWO MEETING AT ANY POINT IN THE SERIES.Â
The First Adventure: Naturally the Payprus comes back as Does herons needling bradford to stop denying what he is.Â
Fight For Castle McDuck: Suprisingly the blessed bagpipes ended up being VITALLY important. And giving us sexiest man alive infinity years running Keith David for an episode. Last Christmas; Santa Cameo
Beaks in the Shell: Gandra being taken and the Lost Library being setup for this episode.Â
Lost Cargo: The Stone of What Was. And Credit where its due what FELT like simply a filler episode with a tantengal connectoin.. ended up probably being one of the most important episodes. Fair play.Â
Life and Crimes: Magica turning Bradford into a non sentient bird, like what happened to her brother.... proving once again this episode really REALLY needed as subplot attached to lead into the finale or something.Â
Bonus Round: Pilot payoffs by the pound. Seriously Scrooge and Donaldâs last lines to each other, the badass return of âIâm a Pilotâ, more on that in a minute, and even other smaller call backs like âKeep Getting Upâ and webby sucessfully getting some juice to Louieâs pride. All top notch stuff and it really makes the finale FEEL like one with all this coming back full circle. So iâve hinted at it enough, letâs bring on the bad guy.Â
The First Woodchuck
Weâve had some mixed payoffs so letâs get to one thatâs just out and out excellent. Bradford Buzzard.. is the best villian the show ever had. Now I will give the caveat that my favorite forever and always will be
You know it, I know it. But Bradford is the best genuine threat of the series, with Marc Evan Jackson perfectly balancing his menace and genuine evil.. with his steadfast believe that he isnât evil, and his calm, controlled business demeanor. Itâs one of the best performances of the show and he deserves all the credit for it and after seeing him in supporting roles for his career, even if his role as Kevin on Brooklyn Nine-Nine is fucking awesome and Iâm sad that show is ending, itâs nice to see him step into a big meaty role as the big bad and utterly nail it.Â
And the finale.. pays eveyrthing off with him, apart from the plan itself perfectly. Starting off him being revealed as Isabella Finchâs grandson... was a stroke of genius. I didnât expect her to come back in play but it gives perfect reason both why he knew about the mysteries.. and why heâs like this.Â
Like Scrooge did with his nephews, niece and daughter, Isabella dragged Bradford all around the world seeing the unseen, thinking it was fun. The problem was... Bradford HATED it. He hated every minute of it, like as one post pointed out Rusty Venture from the Venture bros, and felt he should be in school. He wanted a normal life and a normal world and not.. this waking nightmare. So to him, fixing the world, stopping this sort of thing is the only way and that doing so is a good thing. His problem is how he adapted to it.
We see that best in his mirror images, the people heâs in direct contrast with and the show knows it. Starting off with the one heâs not like at all is Scrooge. Part of what makes Bradford perfect is heâs Scroogeâs evil opposiite. The Luthor to His Superman, The Joker to his Batman, the Green Goblin to his Spider-Man, the Iron Monger to his Iron Man, the Sinestro to his Green Lantern. Both come from a long line of adventure but while Scrooge embraces that and loves it, Bradford hates it and wants to destroy it. One is energetic and always ready, the otherâs calm, calculated. And one sees what he is.. and the other dosenât. Simple as that.
But his other mirrorâs are more like him, moving onto Huey. Their both woodchucks, both prefer caution and planning, and both want to make some sense of a nonsensical world. Both want to feel safe when they constnatly donât. Oneâs prone to panic attack the otherâs calm. But what makes Huey the better man... is that he accepts the world is the way he is. It goes all the way back to terror of the terrafirmains. While he was all for adventure he started his doubting things, not beliving things were real.. because the reality that there are some things you just canât prepare for, just canât know, and you canât be always ready.. it shattered him. He nearly let himself die rather than live knowing whatâs out there. Webby pulled him out of that, literally and figuratively.. and he never went back. Sure he still tries to have an order to things, still breaks when his structureâs broken.. but itâs gone from a paranoid fear of the unknown and weird to embracing it. To relishing in finding unsolved mysteries and new clues to unlock, to finding new things to explore. He went from seeing this chaotic world as something to run from, to embracing and studying it. To loving it the way it is the way his family loves him for who he is. Bradford.. denies reality belongs the way it is and wants to force it into what HIS idea of it is Superboy Prime Style. The world isnât waht he thought it should be so heâll MAKE it that way. Huey grew as a person.. while his arc didnât have a full payoff.. it still pays off here by showing what he COULDâVE been. had he let his earlier fear and his always present neurosis drive him like Bradford has. Let his big brain make him think he knows whatâs better for EVERYONE instead of using it to genuinely help people. Bradford lacks the boys heart and empathy and thatâs why he fell. Huey had his family backing him, his best friends coming to get him, and his brothers ultimately rescue him. Bradford.. threw his only true ally down a styigan murder hole.Â
Finally.. we have the one thatâs not brought up directly.. but is very much there. Donald. While the two donât interact hardly at all... itâs VERY fitting that Donald is the one Bradford picks to threaten Scrooge with. Like Bradford... Donald grew to hate adventure, he wanted to get as far away from it as possible and took it from his boys for as long as he could. Granted that was in part Bradfordâs fault, and that was an INCREDIBLY clever twist: it dosenât make him entirley responsible or anything that robs the moment of itâs imapct, Della still chose to take it out by herself, she still lied to Donald and she still got lost all by her own decision and impuslviness. But it fits perfectly into it: Bradfordâs horrifying smile when Scrooge gets taken away from saving her is even WORSE now with full context, and it still fits that knowing about the project.. heâd want to set it up to screw up Scroogeâs life. I donât think he sabotaged the rocket or anything, too obvious and something Della wouldâve mentioned by now.. but he knew it was unfinished.Â
Back to the parallel the diffrence is once again.. change. Donald let go of his hate of scrooge and his past and realized it wasnât all bad. He let himself grow as a person after a decade of bitterness and anger. But most tellingly and poignantly is Quack Pack... both had a chance to make a world that was safe, normal and what they always wanted. Both out of terror of the danger of this world. Thing is.. Donaldâs was noble. He feared for his kids, his sister, his uncle.. loosing one again and any of them at all. He wanted a normal life to be safe, to hide from that.. but itâs not what THEY wanted or who they are. He accepted thatâs not how the world works and how it does.. is still pretty great. And his growth shows: heâs ending the series planning to go off with his girlfriend globetrotting, KNOWING things might not be safe, but diving into adventure, having accepted it as part of him. He even finds some new family and takes in two girls who badly needed a home. He learned to accept things how they are... and Bradford refuses, not beliving in this world as it is and vowing to force it into the way he wants it to be.Â
And itâs that inherent selfishness.. that makes Bradford the Cartoon Supervillian he desperatley claims he isnât. Bradford dosenât care how many lives it takes, how much worse it makes the world, or how many people he has to stab in the back... the world WILL be ânormalâ. Bradford cares for no one and nothing except his own ambition. He kills Heron despite her loyality, and his own clones who loyally served him.. simply because their chaos too. No one or nothing else matters, not how they feel, not their right to exist.. only HIS vision. If he wanted to keep the world safe heâd be more of a hero, if still throughly a bastard... but he dosenât. He wants to make it ânormalâ. He wants the world the way he thinks it shoudl be and damn anyone else and perfectly represents all the old assholes like him today who refuse to accept something diffrent or against the norm because âthatâs how itâs always beenâ. Like those real world assholes.. Bradford is wrong. The Duckverse is beauitful how it is in itâs chaos and risk and love. And he just canât see it because itâs not what he WANTS to see.Â
And thatâs why I also love the Sword giving him big, black and red classic villianous monster, slowly mutating him as he fights the duck family. Because thatâs his inner strength: he may deny heâs a villian but heâs forcing his will on others, refuses to see the world as it is for selfish reasons, and is willing to kill his own friends and allies if it means getting it. Heâs the bad guy. And while he denies it to those around him... itâs clear from the fact the sword is working for him that he KNOWS IT, he knows heâs a villian and this is just what he wants but is so up his own ass he canât SAY it or admit it. And in the end heâs fully beaten by the fact that his forcing his will on everythingâs whatâs unnatural: While his plan was ingenious, have scrooge sign a contract agreeing never to adventure again, since heâs right Scrooge would solve nonexistance itâs the same reason âlaunch hulk into spaceâ only resulted in a smarter, more skilled hulk coming back with a space army to get revenge. He just didnât bank on the inherent rediclousness of the unvierse: family really is the greatest adventure of all.. and the papyrus accepted it. It was the one thing he coudlnât palnf or because he canât see the woirld how it is.. and thatâs why he lost. He was so confident how he saw the world and how he worked was the only way... another way beat him.Â
His fate.. was also awesome and endleslly apporirate. Being mocked by the other villians who while less capable aside from Magica, at least admit what they are and what their doing.. and turned into a Vulture for Magica, left to be a mindless lackey in tons of chaotic schemes for the rest of his life. It couldnât of happened to a nicer jackass. Okay three more sections to go. Letâs go.
Come Sail Away, Come Sail Away, Come Sail Away With Daissssyyyy
Donaldâs leaving for a long, romantic adventure with Daisy is the perfect capper to Doanldâs character. Donald started the series hating adventure: blaming it for della being gone, his rough times during it, and wanted to escape it in the boat and keep from loosing his kids to it. He felt like a looser for not having reached his dreams or properly provided for his nephews, when really he did his best and still raised three wonderful kids. A bit overproective, god yes.. but despite his grief and anger he still got through ten years with them on his own merits, hard work and determination.Â
As the series went he reconclied with his past, realized Scrooge lost something too and that blaming him soley when it was Dellaâs choice was just taking his anger out on the one person he had left to take it out on instead of embracing his only family left, accepted Storkules as his friend (JUST his friend), accepted adventure through quack pack realizing that while it may be weird, dangerous and sometimes stressful for him... itâs what his family love doing and they should be who they are instead of who he wants them to be, and finally.. accepted himself by finding Daisy, someone who loves him for who he is, and literally and metaphorically understands him and turned right back around from dumping him to save him from a giant monster she roared at. Heâs finally at peace.Â
And thatâs why leaving. Not forever, He , Daisy, and his girls will be back in a few months or even a month. Itâs very clear this is a vacation.. but itâs one heâs earned. Heâll always love his boys, his surrogate daughter/cousin, his sister, and his best buddy launchpad. But itâs okay for him to want to form his OWN family, to spend time with his future wife and show her the world. To make his own story for once instead of sharing it. To find his voice.Â
I also find it very poetic that a story that started with Donald raising his nephews like their dad.. ends with him adopting two more children. Two kids whose lives had been misrable: rapidly aged in tubes, deemed failures, constantly bellittled by the closest things they have for parents, so desperate for answers theyâd kidnap their own sister and betray her trust and do things they know are wrong, And all this.. for nothing as their Dad kills their mom, bad as she was, and plans to kill them. And Donaldâs first thought when given the chance to have a kid free time to himself, with no guilt having earned it? To take these girls in, start his own family, if Daisyâs cool with it mind he thankfully clearly called to talk this over first, and give them their own. Because thatâs who Donald is, a good man whose finally earned his happy ending and the life he always wanted.. and accepted who he always was. An adventuerer, a loving fiance.. and dad.Â
The Real Hero: One last one before the bonus round and a quick one. The Launchpad Scene.. was one of the shows best. His arc in this episode of thinking heâs not a hero.. made sense. Heâs been plenty heroic.. but his boyfriend is a martial arts and gymnastics savant and one of his three best friends has a giant suit of armor and is a genius. But the payoff made even more: He may not be the strongest, the most skilled or the smartest.. but he has the heart of a hero. Heâs always been the kindest, most trusting, most friendly one of the main family, a guy who never gives up, even when he should, never surrenders and loves everybody. And thatâs why heâs inspired so many people: Fenton to not give up after his firing and keep going, leading to his path as Gizmoduck. When Drake was lost, his fllm gone and his mentor seemingly dead (In fact skulking around the sewers like an evil ninja turtle), and his future unclear... TOLD HIM he could be Darkwing, that he could become the hero they both ihdolized and the inspiration to kids he wanted to be by his own bootstraps, and he gave Gosalyn faith in darkwing and hope at at time she had none. He also gave those mice their freedom. Not as poignant but you try creating the rescue rangers and see how far you get. Iâve lost a lot of chipmunks and mice that way.Â
Launchpadâs last stand makes up for his lack of being in the season during the final half. Launchpad realizing that despite his quirks heâs just as noble, valuable and wonderful as his families, both of them. And that he is a pilot. Sure he gets the gizmoduck armor.. but the armor isnât what makes hi ma hero... iâts being launchpad that makes him a hero. Loving adopted dad, wonderful partner, best friend... and a pilot
Bonus Round:
Okay this is just stray stuff from throughout the episode I didnât have several paragraphs worth of material on before we get to the final thoughts. But it had so much good I canât not talk about it. So...
Gyro calling Little Bulb BOYDâs brother. My heart wept. So sweet. As was him fixing his son at the end. BOYD has the two loving families he deserves.. and the brother he deserves.. and the brother he dosenât deserve who will probably also is skulking around the sewers like an nafarious ninja turtle as the series ends.Â
Gosalyn fixing up Darkwingâs outfit for him. Awwww. Adopt that child you coward. Also if they donât base the reboot on frankâs work here, I will riot.Â
âJust cough up the information Bentina!â that was just pure comedy gold especially the sheer fear radiating off him. Also right.Â
Mannyâs âI can explainâ and , once he has silky smooth keith david voice going âCome on man I just want to live my life.â That man is a legend.Â
Dewey and Louie just not talking the âyou kids stay behind shitâ pointing out both their stake in this and how theyâll just go anyway and him proudly accepting it. Given the kids turned the tied of things a lot, good call.Â
Dewey and Don Karnage singing their own background music as they air joust. Hell yes.Â
Pepper got a promotion! Goodf or her... itâs meaningless now but hey she has a partner in both senses.Â
Speaking of pepper she had the best line of the episode âHeâs a grown man who has the strength of a baby!â. Only Amy Sedaris couldâve given that delivery just the perfect way she did.Â
The Funzoâs opening sequence was dynamite, from how well set up it was as an infilfration, to Webby having learned how to scam free drinks (Louie was so proud), to Lena cheating for her sister at DDR, to Scrooge paying full price.. it was wonderful> The payoff was also great as rather than be mad her special day was used as part of an elabroate spy operation.. sheâs giddy. Because of course she is. Two specitic bits that get their own items
The Cabs came back one last time! It dosenât effect my now finished retrospective, but after spending all that time with them it was nice to see them for what will probably be the last time for some time.Â
The whole scene where Della finds out about the trip. Just all of it. Her casually and accidentally choking daisy TWICE, Fethry, who sadly did not get an episode this season, being the one to blab about it and only realizing it .. after repeating that they told him not to, and Gladstone who not only was casually winning at Skeeball while his cousins both got pissed at it, relateable as hell, but then awkwardly escorting his baby cousin out of the situation.Â
âSatstically with Hubert gone one of us should be pancking but WHO I ASK YOU WHO?â As if I needed more evidence they were perfect for each other.Â
Lena just.. slumping over after Dewey finally has her drop the cloak. Comedy gold. BOYD scanning her later likewise so.Â
The second best line and line read of the episode goes to Louie/Bobby Monihan. âThat is not comforting, I do not want to dieâ. He couldnât of summed up Louie in one line any better.Â
Ludvwig was a national treasure. Not only did I squeel internally when it turned out he was alive but the explination for it was hilarious as it was batshit, and him just causally revealing Webbyâs origin was fucking amazing âIll give you all a moment ot processâ The acomplanying âbless me bagpipesâ was also amazing.Â
I do wish we found out where FOWL went but it was probably to leave the remains all free to come back as villians of the week. Frank outright said they had a tailspin sequel episode ready to go.
The Webby and June fight was a masterpiece and I REALLY need to do a top 12 fights list someday.Â
Lena connecting with the new twins , having pretty much the same background of being created by a villian for shitty reasons.Â
âone is silver and the other is â âFlintheart glomgold!â they should consider a teamup. Whatâs a little brainwashing between friends?
âWeâre sistersâ. No you and violet are sisters, Webby is your girlfriend your both just in denial. I only say this because Webby also thinks Della and Penny are just friends and I feel she simply dosenât know what being gay is or again is in denial. Theyâll get there. Plus it feels like Lena just didnât want to loose her and would say anything which is valid.Â
Curtain Call and Final Thoughts:
The Curtain Call was the perfect way to end a spectacular finale. Each bit of itâs a masterpiece, and every character gets one last awesome, heartfelt and hilarous goodbye with the camera and ending how it should: on our five most important characters, in a circle, together, smiling, freefaling into the next adventure. Iâd have it no other way and any other series finale credits and last moments will now pale in comparison.Â
So the finale as a whole is messy, some bits arenât resolved as good as they couldâve been, Huey go the shaft, and it REALLY needed another episode leading into it to help take the pressure off. While it needed 90 minutes for the plot it had to tell, it needed more to build up to that and while the season was tight with episodes they BADLY needed one more they didnât get or even a subplto to help take the load off this episode.Â
But even with that... it was an utterly awesome finale on par with other recent standouts like âLetâs Fight to the Endâ/ âThank you For Watching the Showâ (Both feel like finales to me but in diffrent ways), âThe Futureâ and the whole arc leading up to it, both parts of âHeartâ and âNice While It Lastedâ . It was heartstopping, heartrending and heartfelt and ended the show as it should be: with over the top insanity, big reveals, a hell of a final battle.. and a focus on family. Itâs not the perfect finale, and I defintely need more ducktales.. but itâs still a classic one and one of the series finest hours.. literally in this case.Â
I.. am going to miss this series. I went into it before but itâs thanks to this series I make a living. If youâd like to contribute to that, I have a patreon, patreon.com/popculturebuffet, my next stretch goal is a darkwing duck epsiode a month so kick in a buck wonât you? and take comissions so if theres an episode from the first two seasons thatâs not part of the season 1 arc (Iâm almost done there) or Lenaâs story (already being paid for that) feel free to shoot me a line to comissoin it for five bucks an episode.Â
But more than that it was an excellent well crafted show that took a franchise I love and updated it for a new generation. My nieces love it, I love it, and I will always love it for that. Young or old, this show as phenominal, it was stupdendous.. it was a duckblur. It will remain in my heart for probaly the rest of my life among such shows as Steven Universe, Parks and Recreation, The Venture Bros, Letterkenny, DBZ Abriged, and so many more that have touched my life. It was simply the best. And iâm going to miss it. Thank you for reading this, iâll see you at another rainbow, if not one quite like this.
Next on this Blog: Duck week continues after this review took two days to complete. Sorry about that. Our heroes head to castle McDuck and Dewey is forced to face the consequences of his actions, while Scrooge yells at his dad , his dad yells at him and his mom is the most precious thing thaâts ever lived. Also Launchpad in Donald Cosplay. And it wonât stop there as till saturday the rest of the week is all dedicated to Ducktales as I finish up the Della and Lena arcs for season 1 and get started on Lenaâs last three episodes. So if you liked some ducktales, stick around. And once again.. thank you.Â
