anyone else have an issue where seeing too much of other people’s ocs (and the creations involving/depicting them and how others respond to said characters) make you wanna give up fucking around with your own characters? no? just me?
#some days i’m good and cool and wanna do all the things with… well it’s just one right now. so my boy#seeing other people’s art and shit of their characters is…it’s cool. inspiring#some days though i want to throw my son in a fucking blender and give up on this shit forever#seeing people get comments like ‘ough#your character is so fuckin cool!’#or ‘i love your character paired with the character you’re pairing them with it works so gooood’#and then it’s crickets for me like#oh. okay. i clearly suck at this because if i didn’t people would love him as much as i do on a good day#and the it makes the fun romance stuff not fun because#huh. if nobody likes him - if he’s that shitty - it makes no sense that anyone would fall in love with him in-universe either#he’s clearly got nothing going for him#he clearly sucks ass. and not in a fun way#it feels shitty#and i know i barely put anything out there so of course nobody knows anything about him but#what’s the point?#when all these other awesome characters exist. like putting a shitty child’s drawing up next to a leyendecker#except the child who made the shitty drawing is actual 3* years old and has been doing this for a minute and so has no fucking excuse#to suck other than they’re not smart or creative enough for this shit#i can’t have fun with it if he’s actually shitty#and my only point of reference is other people’s ocs and how people react to them and he’s not like anything like them#because again. if he’s as shitty as i feel i don’t wanna put the effort into any more creation with him#or at all really#can someone fuckin cut this desire to create out of my head? so i stop feeling like this and no longer am at risk#of putting absolute fucking garbage into the world?#it’d be more likely than getting over this dumb comparison bullshit that permeates every other facet of my life as well…#or. no. please. someone give me advice on how to stop feeling like this#i want to keep creating and playing with my guy#character stuff#oc#to the void with love

PENS headcanon time, painting edition!
It’s basically “what type of pretty are they” but I describe it with paintings/painters
For Port he’s got some serious Pre-Raphaelite vibes. Waterhouse comes to mind. I think he’d love to do a replica photo shoot of himself as a siren or something. Just long hair, elegance, and bodies of water. He wants to drown dramatically and beautifully. Though I think he’d also appreciate being compared to a Botticelli painting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For England it’s 100 percent Leyendecker. He’s got the face, the vintage vibes, the put-together perfection. Suits, angles, lots of blond men (lol). Art Deco by Lana del Rey is about him. He’s got the type of face you’d see on your matchbox or tea ad, humble at first glance yet earnestly handsome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Ned I’d say comparing him to a Rembrandt or Van Gogh just doesn’t seem right to me. Also I hc him to be a painter, I’d say the other hcs would be his ‘interpretation’ of his friends/lovers(? 😏). But he is definitely giving neo classical. He’s into the anatomy (he’s probably jacked as asl let’s be real), the rawness, the humanity. He loves deeply studying and appreciating humans in both real life and in painting. and I do find the second picture to bear quite some resemblance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Spain… oh absofuckinglutely some Caravaggio (and anyone inspired by him) shit. The blood, the catholic imagery, the anguish. Yes to pomegranates and gaping wounds. Yes to dramatic lighting and inherent homoeroticism. And the curls and coloring of these two paintings just remind me of him. This boy is just a bit angsty.

Sorry for the super long post. this was fun to make though

the problem with creating a DnD character who's very good at keeping secrets is that i've had a lot of fun artfully not-really-lying to my party but i am also DYING bc i want to TALK ABOUT HIM and must HOLD MY TONGUE bc too many members of said party are on tumblr (hi guys, you remain perfect)
things that can be shared:
washed-up Leyendecker dandy
started the campaign seeming like the fancy mom friend who's going to keep everyone clean and cheerful in this haunted fucking house
has, over the past few sessions -- and the ghosts and the vampires and the bones and the steady realization that he has maybe possibly inherited some curse magic that has a lot of emotional baggage attached (ノ ᐕ )ノ︵ ┻━┻ -- gradually started to reveal that he is less "a nice man" than he is "an occasionally nice nihilist crackpot who is brightly advocating for king-killing"
the only character who can use thieves' tools. negative dex.
(friend playing the rogue in another campaign WAILED when i explained this; listen, listen, it's funny, it's funny)
took a level in cleric; immediately threatened god ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
rolled a nat 1 ᕕ( ⌓̈ )ᕗ
has been throwing gold at all the party's expenses with what is either "too gay to math" frivolity or, uh, more of that nihilism probably ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
accidentally on purpose telepathically pissed off the new NPC -- but like, as a persuasion check to make clear they were actually all on the same king-killing side
was ready to be a colossal bitch at the increasingly reckless warlock until she proved to be, in fact, secretly very sad! uh oh! shit! oh no! he apologized to her out of nowhere instead.
i love him. he is in his 40s and too arthritic for this.

hi!!! i’m absolutely in love with your knave-verse series, and i fall more in love every time i reread it. i just recently moved to boston (hence the anon ask), and some of the first things i did were visit both the gardner museum and the mfa and they’re incredible!! the mfa is beautiful and i love the variety of their artworks (and their rotating exhibits! i went just in time to catch the end of the japanese graphic design exhibit and i loved it!), but the gardner is a masterpiece. i love how much it feels like the personal collection it is and i love the almost-clutter of some of the rooms and i love the atmosphere of the whole place. i also got to see their summer rotating exhibit, which was on christopher street: transgender portraits, and i cried in the exhibit hall.
ANYWAY. what i actually wanted to talk about is. not any of that.
i just started reading michael finkel’s the art thief, about stéphane breitwieser, and i’m so curious as to what knave-verse tk thinks of him. there’s a couple passages in particular that have caught my eye as things i think tk would have an opinion on, and i’m only on chapter 3:
A violent, late-night heist is an insult to Breitwieser’s notion that stealing artwork should be a daytime affair of refined stealth in which no one so much as senses fear.
Breitwieser’s sole motivation for stealing, he insists, is to surround himself with beauty, to gorge on it. Very few art thieves have ever cited aesthetics as an incentive, but Breitwieser has emphasized this repeatedly…He takes only works that stir him emotionally, and seldom the most valuable piece in a place. He feels no remorse when he steals because museums, in his deviant view, are really just prisons for art. They’re often crowded and noisy, with limited visiting hours and uncomfortable seats, offering no calm place to reflect or recline.
Instead of an art thief, Breitwieser prefers to be thought of as an art collector with an unorthodox acquisition style. Or, if you will, he’d like to be called an art liberator.
the second quote in particular, especially the comment about museums being prisons, feels like something tk would have thoughts about, considering both his own unique code of thievery ethics and the fact that he now works in a museum himself, but all three of those quotes got my attention when i read them. finkel does mention that breitwieser “despised” the gardner theft because the thieves, in a way, destroyed the paintings by cutting them out of their frames instead of removing them neatly, which i do think tk would agree with him on, but we already know how tk feels about the gardner theft so that’s not surprising.
i’ve always loved museums, but i didn’t have any real appreciation for art for a long time. i started building that appreciation before i read your knave-verse, but the way that tk talks about art makes me look at things in a completely different way. you’ve also introduced me to so many artists i didn’t know anything about before! i’m still partial to sargent, but i’ve definitely expanded my horizons a lot in the last year or two and it’s incredible!! thank you so much for writing this series!! so seriously it has changed me and the way i look at art and the world and i keep coming back to it over and over again because i love it so much
oh, holy shit, this is amazing. Thank you so much.
I have so many things to say.
1 - Yes! Yes! the Gardner is astonishing, I love it so much. One of my favorite museums in the world. I'm so glad you went and loved it too.
2 - If you have access to a car - Newport, RI is a good day trip from Boston (the Breakers alone is worth the trip) - and the American Illustration Museum there has a huge collection of Leyendeckers. I need to go back. I need more time not devoted to being at work.
3 - I have not read The Art Thief, but it's on my list now, it sounds fascinating.
I think TK would appreciate the style and elan of refined stealth - that is extremely his vibe. (the fact that they cut the Gardner paintings out of their frames is physically painful to think about - although who pulled off the Gardner theft is one of my first questions in the afterlife).
But, TK would vehemently disagree with Breitwieser's characterization of museums as prisons of art. Look, there are lots of ethical concerns about museums - but they also have the potential to show people things they would never have the chance to see. Art isn't/shouldn't be locked away where only the privileged few can see it - it belongs to everyone.
4 - TK's taste in art is extremely my taste in art (shocking, right?) - but writing this has made me research a lot of art I would never otherwise have seen (especially in Austin - I now really want to go to Austin for the art, also google is 90% convinced I'm moving there).
And just, in conclusion - thank you so much for taking the time to say this, because it means a lot that something that started because I'd been watching White Collar and Lonestar and had a weird 'huh, what if?' moment, turned into something that has actually impacted the way you look at art, and the way that you feel like it can belong to you. That's amazing. I am so floored - in a good way - by that. Thank you.

💘 🌈📚 for Alfred? :)
💘 HEART WITH ARROW — what and/or who do(es) your oc consider the most important to them?
This is the real trouble with Alfred. In some ways he's as loyal as anyone but to his own people, to the American experiment. But he's able to pick and choose what aspects and who with not a lot of guilt. And his priorities change rapidly and without warning. He's faithful, he believes consistently. But he's not loyal to anyone or any single idea until he comes into his entire power. He's not heartless, he can be supportive, he can be a downright martyr for his own people, he will probably go to his final grave with loved ones on his mind. But I'm not sure I'd say a single person commands the title 'most important' probably Maria if anyone, she permeates every aspect of his existence but if that was the case, they wouldn't be where they are. It's lonely at the top.
What he considers most important will depend on who asks and when and always will.
🌈 RAINBOW — what is your oc's sexual orientation/gender identity? what pronouns do they use?
He's pretty bi. Slightly more into men than women but only because his teenage love affair with Maria programmed any heterosexuality he had left. Kind of an all American Leyendecker type queer if you catch my drift.
📚 BOOKS — what level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?
He got a degree in law from Harvard 300 years ago and he's been saying he's a Harvard graduate ever since. I'm not sure if he's been able to sit through a whole program since. He learns too fast and can keep up with practically any scientific conversation. He likes being on campuses, the cutting edge verve of student movements especially after he got his ass fragged to kingdom come in Vietnam. He's well read, well spoken when he wants to be and just oozing curiosity. Man knows so much shit.

your post inspired me so here's who I think certain saw characters favorite artists would be with no explanation at all:
hoffman: george bellows
amanda: paul cezanne
john: osman hamdi bey
lawrence: allan kaprow
adam: marta minujin
lynn: doris salcedo
strahm: caravaggio
oh i like this!! i want to add some:
the eerie quality of henri de toulouse-lautrec's work (at least imo) feels like it'd be appealing to hoffman. along the same vein, i'd say edvard munch too. ALSO FRANCISCO GOYA. im surprised he wasn’t also painting fucked up shit on his own walls.
amanda would love louise bourgeois, ana mendieta, joan mitchell, and eva hesse. i feel like she'd also be really into fiber arts in general (tamara kostianovsky, kiki smith, raija jokinen). also we know she likes some renaissance/stylistically classical art bc she has the birth of venus print next to her bed in saw 3! i think this is more for gay reasons but i bet she'd like john william waterhouse’s mythological paintings.
i love this one for john! the obvious one for him would be da vinci as well- john's drawings actually remind me a lot of his. i think he wouldn't be into abstraction because “it lacks intellect” or some shit. probably dark, dramatic, pensive baroque art.
i feel like lawrence would be into impressionism but NOT post impressionism!!! he'd be so annoying about it. monet, degas, cassat, etc. i also think he'd enjoy botanical illustrations. probably a fan of edward hopper too.
adam would like jc leyendecker. just based on vibes. others i think he'd enjoy include john singer sargent, norman lewis, lee krasner, yoshitaka amano, salman toor, yayoi kusama... these are all over the place uhhhh i just think he'd enjoy a wide range of styles. now ofc he has favorite photographers, but that is not at all my area of study and the only one i could think of off the top of my head that would fit him is robert mapplethorpe.
for lynn, andrew wyeth makes sense to me- the lonely, empty, desolate feeling his paintings give you would probably speak to her :( agnes martin (ESPECIALLY agnes martin) and louise nevelson would probably appeal to her too.
strahm liking caravaggio is basically canon to me. like of fucking course. for one, he'd just loooove telling people that the Old Master painters are the finest of fine artists just bc he's a dick (and doesn't know shit about art made after like the 18th century). but also caravaggio was gay and killed someone and was murdered so. it fits. he'd probably scoff at rene magritte paintings but deep down he'd really enjoy them.
im obsessed with this ask and i've been drafting this response for a hot minute bc i wanted to put some real thought into it. VERY fun and a great way to procrastinate on work as an art history grad student

artist asks: 6, 9, & 21 😊
artist asks!
6. which artists inspire you right now?
leyendecker comes to mind every time i'm asked this question, but some current ones are sas miledge, celia lowenthal, @ hatepotion, @ zmeess, @ quibbs 💖
9. what are you currently trying to improve?
i feel like i'm always experimenting with and trying to improve the textures in my art! my goal is always more but i think sometimes i hold back when i'm actually working. part of that is finding the brushes that really work for me but i think most of it is just going all in with layers and embracing a little bit of mess :o) that and learning more about composition!
21. weirdest thing you've ever drawn?
oh man, i've drawn so much jokey shit for friends and family over the years uHH things to come to mind: fucked up little sonic, crocodile biting a dnd character's crotch, gandalf big naturals

oh this resonates so much with me i gonna put my 5ct here.
yes i know what you mean. i've been comparing myself to others since i picked up a pencil as a kid (not kidding; i've compared myself to class mates in 1st grade and i had a super talented one); and it was as painful back then as it is nowadays i can't make myself stop.
if artist envy was a discipline, i'd be top nodge lol. i'd be winning awards at it. browsing tumblr and twitter gives me joy and so much pain at the same time. there are so many inspiring, funny, cool works but also--holy gods, when i look at some of the big fishes here in the astarion fandom pond my art looks to me like this
Tumblr media
and what i am trying to express in a somewhat funny way can actually be extremly painful. some weeks ago i tried to paint a somewhat semi realist astarion and i figured there was something off with it all the time and i couldn't tell what it was. then funnily, shortly after i finished it, the tumblr algo would put a remarkably well executed astarion on my timeline and it felt like being hit by a truck.
does this sound silly? maybe. but i am a friend of honestly coming out about these struggles because i feel like i am not alone with them and i wanna let you know, you're not alone with these. because other artists being honest about these feelings helps me a lot.
i'm going to go a little further and tell you that i woke up with toothache next morning because i was so frustrated i probably grinded my teeth like shit over night. yes that bad :'>
but then i decided to step away from astarion's face a few days and got myself out of that horrible headspace. sometimes changing the focus helps a lot.
but there is always that feeling. "It's always the others who slay, it's not me, it's never gonna be me." but in the end of the day, these are just fucking thoughts.
when it comes to improving it is defintely necessairy to study pro artists work. but i have found a workaround here: studying the work of the top dogs of the industry. looking at their work doesn't spark jealousy or feelings of a loser within me; i simply don't have this "This could be me but it's not" feeling. they're so faaar above, they're just like the artgods for 20+ years and i'm not jealous of gods because I'm none. XD I can learn from them without gnawing my teeth and feel like poop. IDK if this trick would do it for you, but maybe it helps. people like karla ortiz, charlie bowater, min yum (bumskee), peter morbacher, nabetse zitro, samdoesarts, loish, rossdraws.... ahh there are so many; you can find many more on google when you check the most popular digital artists of our time. it also helps to study artists from the past like norman rockwell or joseph leyendecker. :)
i'm sorry for rambling so much, i could write a book about this but i think that's probably the gist of what i wanted to say :')
i hope you're going to feel better about your art 💞
I'm fightin for my life in Unity and fucking with ilustrations for my board game at the university. Next comic is very much WIP, but expect some fluff and love. Need to take a break from cum and penises.
I am a softie :c

I have seen people question whether dios apate minor really needed to happen the way it did. it's the 'this could have been an email' of htn. 'augustine this did not have to be a threesome', I hear people saying. and boy do I have an obnoxious amount of things to say to protest this perfectly sensible assertion so here we go haha
1) yes it absolutely had to be like that. It says so on this piece of paper *hands you a piece of paper that says "because I said so and also it's narratively and thematically Sexy"* in my half-legible handwriting. seeing tamsyn muir describe harrow the ninth as a book about being a kid and realizing your parents probably had sex has given me such validation, I am unstoppable now. (to be serious for a moment, harrow the ninth is essentially a bildungsroman, and the threesome scene does a whole lot of thematic heavy lifting around harrow glimpsing elements of adulthood, relationships, and sexuality she clearly finds at the same time repulsive, bewildering and fascinating, and around opening her and especially our eyes to how much john is just a man with human longings still, under the god stuff. dios apate is crucial plot- and character-wise too -- it's a loadbearing threesome in terms of delivering the clues you need to piece together the mystery plot of the book, which is simply delightful -- but even more so thematically. and then the scene at the end where they confront john gives gideon some of that same opportunity to peek into adulthood and go '...well shit I guess', as a sort of mirror, just without the french kissing that time and more murder. the things magnus and abigail model for the girls about love and adulthood? mercy and augustine are providing the opposite-day batshit insane version of that fhdskjfa, you know, for contrast and spice)
2) listen... it gets lonely out there in deep space with your 'legendary unamorous' brother, two infant pathetic baby kitten sisters who you'll probably have to kill one day when you take another stab at god if they don't manage to get themselves killed along the way on their own, and the two people you've spent the last ten thousand years having separate yet connected married & divorced arcs with and also btw one of them is god... honestly a threesome over the dinner table is probably The most well-adjusted reaction one might hope for under those circumstances
3) on a characterization level I think Augustine is actually doing something incredibly deliberate with it: he's presenting John with yet another chance to admit what he did. which is notable especially since the deal he and mercy agree on as a condition for the threesome to happen at all seems to be that they're going to give the ol' godslaying another game try sooner rather than later. (I get the sense that it's not so much that he disagrees with her ultimate goal so much as that he thinks she's being dangerously indiscreet and hasty going about it, before. “though I think it will be the death of us,” huh.)
notice how he's structuring the whole thing: he's invoking the intimacy and love in their strange little threeway relationship and how long it's been by truly playing along with john's 'we're a happy family really when we're at home! :)' delusion (helped along by lowered inhibitions via enormous amounts of alcohol and what I've previously described as a joint mercy/augustine leyendecker themed thirst trap. ah, a classic). he brings up alecto and what happened to her -- or rather, he is clever enough to make john bring up alecto and how she is totally dead, right?? by seeming to make a careless statement that leads there and then acting contrite about it after. he (helped along by mercy, who I think realizes exactly what he's doing -- this is very much a two-man con) brings up how much they all loved their cavaliers, and wow funny how that's been haunting us for ten thousand years now huh :) wow, a lot of our other lyctor friends slash family sure are super dead in the name of some unknowable greater reason neither of us quite grasp and that you won't fucking tell us, aren't they. these are all the main grievances he and mercy confront john about at the end of the book, but put forth much more subtly and not phrased as an accusation -- he's baring his and mercy's vulnerabilities as bait, essentially. if john had, say, a conscience where his conscience should be instead of a black hole, it probably should have stirred something in him.
(also let me just say... the way augustine just takes a pneumatic drill to the TWO tender spots g1deon seems to have and then has the audacity to be like 'oh dear. did that upset him. ooof my bad *loooong dead-eyed slurp of his wine*' is just sooo... he's such a bitch!!! he's the only person who could ever have held their own in a ten-thousand-year bitch-off with mercy and I love him so much. well even if it wasn't all to get g1deon into murder range for harrow I think he wouldn't enjoy sticking around for the 'getting our tongues on god' part of the evening so maybe it's a kindness, really, and totally not pent-up aggression from the last twenty years or so breaking through)
he is all but shaking john by the lapels begging him to just... come clean about it already, to stop thinking he's still kidding everyone else along with himself. it's clear throughout the book that augustine knows exactly what john is at this point -- and all of the most cynical things he does say about it turn out to be distressingly right. john is always less sentimental than you'd think. john wouldn't forgive mercy, he will abandon in a heartbeat anything that isn’t necessary to him anymore, whether emotionally or in some other way. and still he seems to hold out some desperate absurd hope that the man he wants, the man he thought was there, is in there, somewhere deep deep down, if he just gives him the chance to show himself.
(mercy definitely has her own side of this whole thing, I'm just focusing more on augustine because this evening was like. his idea in the first place and I feel like we can Read Some Things into that fact lol. now that we have both ntn and htn to go from I sort of have this sense that the things augustine wants from john are more... personal? more interpersonal? they both love him equally, but mercy's love seems tinged slightly more towards the religious (augustine accuses her of knowing 'only worship without adoration', which like... also the eight house's entire Vibe lol) -- mercy at the end of that book is totally a person breaking up with GOD, not just with john -- while augustine's vibe is more like a man in the last not-with-a-bang-but-a-whimper days of a marriage that sort of felt like it could have been something real and good once but all your illusions about it have since been taken from you and trampled underfoot into the mud and you've had the divorce papers signed and ready in a drawer for over a year now, hell, as it turns out, is other people etc. lmao)
having a threesome over the dinner table with god is one thing, having a threesome over the dinner table centered on the one man and god who has yet again let you down in a way so fundamental it can barely fit into words and who you both still love in a way anyway, miserably, and also just reaffirmed your joint resolution to murder (all under the pretense that it gives your baby sisters the chance to murder your brother of ten thousand years yeah that's why this is happening no other underlying aching emotional motivations here haha)... listen mercy and augustine are simply on a different level, theologically. they've added horny shrimp colours to the religious spectrum. who else does it like them
