OC Languages list
Figuring this out for fun.
Josh:
Living languages: Dunmeris (Redoran dialect- first language), Cyrodiilic (Nibenese dialect- speaks with a strong Blacklight accent particularly after being back in Morrowind), Ashlander (Urshilaku dialect- learnt after 3E 428), High Elvish (Blacklight accent kinda messes with his enunciation).
Classical languages: Ald Aldmeris (the equivalent of learning ancient Greek or Latin), Dwemeris (Vvardenfell dialect- first asshole to crack their code, released a thesis on it under the name Talerion of Sunhold. He thinks Dwemeris is different depending on the province with a shared writing system which is something he starts working on during the Dragon Crisis), Chimeris (Nerevar specifically, Josh is not fluent).
Erra:
Fluent: Ashlander (First language- Urshilaku/North Western and Zainab/North Eastern dialects), Dunmeris (Redoran dialect)
Knows just enough to get him by- Cyrodiilic (Nibenese, he can introduce himself and ask for payment. He carries a Dunmeris to Imperial dictionary around).
Etana:
Fluent: Ashlander (First language- Urshilaku/North Western dialect), Dunmeris (Redoran dialect).
Sydari:
Fluent: Cyrodiilic (Nibenese influenced Nordic dialect), Dunmeris (First language- Windhelm dialect, based off of the Hlaalu dialect. Has a very obvious Nordic accent when speaking Dunmeris).
Yani:
Fluent: Ashlander (First language, Erabenimsun/South Eastern dialect), Dunmeris (Telvanni dialect).
(a huge part of his depression when he, Maera and Josh lived in Cheydinhal was that he couldn't communicate with anyone outside of his immediate family. He tried learning Cyrodiilic but didn't have a lot of success before he died).
Maera:
Living languages: Dunmeris (First Language- Redoran dialect), Cyrodiilic (Nibenese dialect), High Elvish (has a much clearer enunciation than Josh.)
Classical languages: Ald Aldmeris
Semi fluent: Ashlander (Erabenimsun/South Eastern dialect with some Urshilaku).

I saw a post about autistic Diomedes and was very interested if you have any other headcannon that relate to that or just about him in general
Yes !! I love him sm. Let's go for my autistic Diomedes headcanon >:)
(also he's one of my fav characters so you can find more rambles and HCs about him on my acc ;))
(Just to make clear this is very self indulgent and many things r based on my own experience with autism)
Tbh it all started when I saw that and immediately thought of Diomedes
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/722c87bd32f78ac5921d48eaf8994db2/d94906380f1839a9-a1/s540x810/e6728811b0a94ae90c295e99f865d2e9c6637ee8.jpg)
He can lie but he rarely considers it as an option. When someone asks him anything it just feels normal to tell the truth (and it tends to annoy Odysseus)
He also sucks at tones and facial expressions (both to use and to understand in others) so he appears as very unexpressive and hardly gets hints or sarcasm or anything (which may cause problems with some ppl (coughlyingodysseuscough))
He often sounds meaner and more rude than he means to, but ppl assume it's bc he has high expectations of them and it usually motivates them to do better.
He also gets praised for not complaining after months of eating the same 3 meals during a long expedition, but.... He genuinely enjoys eating the same things over and over.
As a kid he hated eye contacts but he was told it's rude so he forced himself to get over it. Now, he straight up stares too much at ppl, and that makes him come off as intimidating (he doesn't mean to, he just wants to be polite.)
He bites things, a lot. (Usually either his knuckles, the skin of his hands, or the inside of his cheeks. But tbh if he's not paying attention he will chew on anything between his hands).
In my experience all autistic ppl have at least one animal they adore. For him it's the horses. No matter how old he is, he will always go "omg horses" and attempt to pet them bc they're just that cool to him.
Also he has no clue he's different so he assumes "I seem to be the only one struggling with things such as social gatherings where there are a lot of ppl talking at once and a lot of different smells and all- that must mean I'm weak and need to toughen up."
And as you can guess, his meltdowns get pretty violent and sometimes dangerous (for others and himself) (but, well, he's a man from ancient greece how else do you want him to cope /lh)
Well, to sum up my HC in one meme
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/71e102f607bac02480b9474a72d3817d/d94906380f1839a9-e1/s540x810/209a83bc35f450fc85adf3096cdee400968b7a58.jpg)
Actually ty anon im glad I get to talk about this HC lol
#RIP Diomedes of Argos you would've loved biting your friends for fun#HCing my fav character as neurodivergent is like a love language for me#also i have some autistic Ody stuff and once ive written them down properly i may also post them#the iliad#tagamemnon#diomedes

Actually keeping my word and doing the thing I said I'd do
First page of Branwen and Daisy comic and oml this is going to take longer than I anticipated
"Cover" drawing
#a little fact i want to mention tho#so something about sign language i do know is that usually when they are addressing someone they dont use the name of the other person#because it would take too long to spell it out in some cases#so instead they sign words that sound like the name have the same meaning or just remind them of this person- like a nickname i guess#and thats why daisy is calling branwen “witch” - Barnabos still calls branwen that and daisy stuck with it#not that branwen really minds or cares#but yeah what was it called#the ogerton sign language might work differently but i thought i would be a fun detail#icebound#icebound spoilers#icebound oc#daisy icebound#legends of avantris#loa#loa oc#oc#original characters#my art#digital art#comic#fanart#sketch

i've been listening to so much german music over the past few weeks and I keep imagining caleb widogast knowing all of the zemnian volkslieder - the folk songs - and aching to hear the music. translating the zemnian for his friends. passing some sheet music on to yasha so she can play it. attending concerts with anyone who will go with him (astrid, eadwulf, a disguised essek) in the new rexxentrum.
#does the venn diagram of people who love romantic music and people who love critical role exist?#if it does the overlap has got to be slim#anyway I just want caleb to know the zemnian equivalent of brahms. that's all.#I love when there are fun sweet idiosyncratic things in a character's first language#caleb widogast#critical role#listen to some brahms people!!!

Do you conlang? I was wondering if you had naming languages (or possibly even more developed ones) for pulling the words you use. I tried to search your blog but didn't find anything, wouldn't be surprised if the feature is just busted tho. Your worldbuilding is wonderful and I particularly enjoy the anthropological and linguistic elements.
Ok the thing is I had kind of decided I was not going to do any conlanging because I don't feel like I'm equipped to do a good job of it, like was fully like "I'm just going to do JUST enough that it doesn't fail an immediate sniff test and is more thoughtful than just keysmashing and putting in vowels". And then have kinda been conlanging anyway (though not to a very deep and serious extent. I maybe have like....an above average comprehension of how language construction works via willingness to research, but that's not saying much, also I can never remember the meanings of most linguistic terms like 'frictives' or etc off the top of my head. I'm just kinda raw dogging it with a vague conceptualization of what these things mean)
I do at least have a naming language for Wardi (and more basic rules for other established languages) but the rudimentary forms of it were devised with methods much shakier and less linguistically viable than even the most basic naming language schemes, and I only went back over it LONG after I had already made a bunch of words so there's some inconsistencies with consonant presence and usage. (This can at least be justified because it IS a language that would have a lot of loanwords and would be heavily influenced by other language groups- Burri being by far the most significant, Highland-Finnic and Yuroma-Lowlands also being large contributors)
The 'method' I used was:
-Skip basic construction elements and fully move into devising necessary name words, with at least a Vibe of what consonants are going to be common and how pronunciation works -Identify some roots out of the established words and their meanings. Establish an ongoing glossary of known roots/words. -Construct new words based in root words, or as obvious extensions/variants of established words. -Get really involved in how the literal meanings of some words might not translate properly to english, mostly use this to produce a glossary of in-universe slang. -Realize that I probably should have at least some very basic internal consistency at this point. -Google search tutorials on writing a naming language. -Reverse engineer a naming language out of established words, and ascribe all remaining inconsistencies to being loanwords or just the mysteries of life or whatever.
I do at least have some strongly established pronunciation rules and a sense of broad regional dialect/accents.
-'ai' words are almost always pronounced with a long 'aye' sound.
-There is no 'Z' or 'X' sound, a Wardi speaker pronouncing 'zebra' would go for 'tsee-brah', and would attempt 'xylophone' as 'ssye-lohp-hon'
-'V' sounds are nearly absent and occur only in loanwords, and tend to be pronounced with a 'W' sound. 'Virsum' is a Highland word (pronounced 'veer-soom') denoting ancestry, a Wardi speaker would go 'weer-sum'.
-'Ch' spellings almost always imply a soft 'chuh' sound when appearing after an E, I, or O (pelatoche= pel-ah-toh-chey), but a hard 'kh' sound after an A or U (odomache= oh-doh-mah-khe). When at the start of a word, it's usually a soft 'ch' unless followed by an 'i' sound (chin (dog) is pronounced with a hard K 'khiin', cholem (salt) is pronounced with a soft Ch 'cho-lehm')
-Western Wardin has strong Burri cultural and linguistic influence, and a distinct accent- one of the most pronounced differences is use of the ñ sound in 'nn' words. The western city of Ephennos is pronounced 'ey-fey-nyos' by most residents, the southeastern city of Erubinnos is pronounced 'eh-roo-been-nos' by most residents. Palo's surname 'Apolynnon' is pronounced 'A-puh-lee-nyon' in the Burri and western Wardi dialects (which is the 'proper' pronunciation, given that it's a Kos name), but will generally be spoken as 'Ah-poh-leen-non' in the south and east.
-R's are rolled in Highland-Finnic words. Rolling R's is common in far northern rural Wardi dialects but no others. Most urban Wardi speakers consider rolling R's sort of a hick thing, and often think it sounds stupid or at least uneducated. (Brakul's name should be pronounced with a brief rolled 'r', short 'ah' and long 'uul', but is generally being pronounced by his south-southeastern compatriots with a long unrolled 'Brah' sound).
Anyway not really a sturdy construction that will hold up to the scrutiny of someone well equipped for linguistics but not pure bullshit either.
#I actually did just make a post about this on my sideblog LOL I think in spite of my deciding not to conlang this is going to go full#full conlanging at some point#The main issue is that the narrative/dialogue is being written as an english 'translation' (IE the characters are speaking in their actual#tongues and it's being translated to english with accurate meaning but non-literal treatment)#Which you might say like 'Uh Yeah No Shit' but I think approaching it with that mindset at the forefront does have a different effect than#just fully writing in english. Like there's some mindfulness to what they actually might be saying and what literal meanings should be#retained to form a better understanding of the culture and what should be 'translated' non-literally but with accurate meaning#(And what should be not translated at all)#But yeah there's very little motivation for conlanging besides Pure Fun because VERY few Wardi words beyond animal/people/place names#will make it into the actual text. Like the only things I leave 'untranslated' are very key or untranslatable concepts that will be#better understood through implication than attempts to convey the meaning in english#Like the epithet 'ganmachen' is used to compliment positive traits associated with the ox zodiac sign or affectionately tease#negative ones. This idea can be established pretty naturally without exposition dumps because the zodiac signs are of cultural#importance and will come up frequently. The meaning can get across to the reader pretty well if properly set up.#So like leaving it as 'ganmachen' you can get 'oh this is an affectionate reference to an auspicious zodiac sign' but translating#it as the actual meaning of 'ox-faced' is inevitably going to come across as 'you look like a cow' regardless of any zodiac angle#^(pretty much retyped tags from other post)#Another aspect is there's a few characters that have Wardi as a second language and some of whom don't have a solid grasp on it#And I want to convey this in dialogue (which is being written in english) but I don't want it to just be like. Random '''broken''' english#like I want there to be an internal consistency to what parts of the language they have difficulties with (which then has implications for#how each language's grammar/conjugation/etc works). Like Brakul is fairly fluent in Wardi at the time of the story but still struggles#with some of the conjugation (which is inflectional in Wardi) especially future/preterite tense. So he'll sometimes just use the#verb unconjugated or inappropriately in present tense. Though this doesn't come across as starkly in text because it's#written in english. Like his future tense Wardi is depicted as like 'I am to talk with him later' instead of 'I'll talk with him later'#Which sounds unnatural but not like fully incorrect#But it would sound much more Off in Wardi. Spanish might be a better example like it would be like him approaching it with#'Voy a hablar con él más tarde' or maybe 'Hablo con él más tarde' instead of 'Hablaré con él más tarde'#(I THINK. I'm not a fluent spanish speaker sorry if the latter has anything wrong with it too)

Fun note of the specific pronoun situation with the translation errors between Wasp and Bugnish: under normal circumstances, Jayde would get automatically assigned he/him in Bugnish, since she uses the standard "non-queen social bug" pronouns that roughly 95% of the Wasp Hive do, which get translated to drone pronouns in Bugnish due to a roughly century-old miscommunication. She gets assigned worker pronouns in Bugnish specifically because those are what Kabbu defaults to with social bugs, and other people picked it up from him during introductions. This Will Be A Point Of Confusion For Her Whenever She Asks About It.
#we speak#headcanons#conlang#anyways. fun fact the house's pronouns get jiggled around a lot more than it/its vi and they/them kabbu. jayde is a he now#hes still a worker this is just how bugnish has settled on translating wild swamplands pronouns#for related reasons “nonsocial bug” when translated from Wasp to Bugnish will become worker pronouns#queen is still queen though#we still need to work out what neopronouns we want to sub in for queen pronouns. or if we want to sub worker for a neopronoun#unfortunately we can't just write in conlang and expect people to understand it#our translation setup to english is still very weird#whenever we get to let zbt-159 interact with out of colony bugnish speakers they might get she/herred just because#yknow. we are already translating workergender as she/her.#bug fables#theres enough language barrier and weird interpretation that character pronouns will change from perspective to perspective#she/her in wasp pov because wasp kingdom socialbuggender is still technically a worker gender#he/him in everyone else's pov because the wasp queen's drones and generals use the same pronouns and some scribes got very confused#it prioritizes drone because that's Technically the higher rank and thus the one to use to avoid offence from guests#but drones don't realistically have much station so it's sort of like calling the entire wasp kingdom except for the queen manwhores

I think some pjsk fans are a little too comfortable making fun of how the characters pronounce english words. Saw a video titled “wxs speaking ‘engrishu’” & it’s like hey man. that feels a little unnecessary. You can just say English.
#I think it’s a little funny when the characters throw in English out of nowhere bc it’s like woa hey English jumpscare#but I think it veers a little too close to mockery of accents when youre making fun of pronunciation.#mine#like. make fun of tsukasa for walking up to a small child and going HEY GIRL I AM WORLD FUTURE STAR DANCE AND SING bc that’s a freak thing#to do in any language but cool it on the pronunciation stuff. maybe consider the long running racist jokes about making accents or#broken English into a punchline & how you could be (unintentionally) playing into that.#Ik some people use the romanization of uhhh.#hiragana? katakana? kanji? (unfamiliar w Japanese writing system) with songs and stuff but I don’t think you need to be doing that for#translated dialogue.

Babel-17
sci-fi set in a future in an intergalactic war facing unknown beings only known as ‘invaders’
when a new code from the enemy is discovered, a poet/linguist/cryptographer is asked to try crack it - but quickly realises it’s a language
she assembles a crew to travel to the war yards to study the language, and discovers that learning it changes the way people think and interact with others
explores linguistic relativity
queer and polyamorous characters
#babel-17#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#hi mar i finally read this#I thought it was really interesting!! some poetic and experimental writing (as you’d expect with the subject matter)#really interesting worldbuilding elements with some unique cultures; all sorts of body modification#and casual queerness and polyamory. fascinating main character.#a fun spaceship crew of interesting and unique characters though I didn’t feel like I had enough time to get to know most of them tbh.#I feel like I was just really getting into things when I got to the end! I wish there was more!!#Though I do appreciate how succinct the main plot was. it has a specific point and goal.#I love the concept of languages changing the way you think and interact with the world taken to extreme levels in a sci-fi context.#(like obviously irl the theory has its issues; and i think there were some inaccurate examples in here; but yknow)#there’s definitely a few things that didn’t age great but overall. very interesting definitely glad i read it!!

the best way for me to get in tune of my own native language is to just start translating a bunch of random text from my interests be it games, song lyrics, books, etc... something so liberating just piecing together words and coming up with ways on how to say certain phrases in another language
#i remember years ago in my free time i was on my old beaten-up laptop translating like the first few chapters of death note in filipino lol#dont know where the laptop is or where the files have gone it's probably still here somewhere#my translations were very literal and had rough grammar but god was it fun to see characters speaking my mother tongue#can say i improved a lot on my translating skills now especially in terms of interpreting more complex/poetic text#i love gushing abt language since my mom speaks kapampangan‚ pangalatok (she insists on calling it that instead of pangasinense) & bicolano#relatives from my mom's side speaks kapampangan too so i picked up some of the phrases but naturally forgot most of them which i regret#i need to start locking in to earn the polyglot title#txt

Everyday goes a little something like this. I open tumblr and check the pathologic tag to find art because the vibe patho artists capture is exquisite.
I immediately see someone making fun of Daniil for having highly specific special interests that he likes talking about.
I ignore it and scroll further only to see another 5 posts calling him annoying for oh wait give me a second *rereads text posts making fun of Daniil* showing symptoms of autism.
I sigh like a depressed disappointed father. I close tumblr.
#pathologic#daniil dankovsky#making fun of him can be funny#I’ve definitely laughed at a joke at his expense more than once#but I constantly see him being ridiculed for doing things that are just blatant acts of neurodiversity#he wears specific clothes oh what a whiny spoiled city boy#he speaks a language he learned as a mandatory part of his medical education that god forbid he actually enjoyed and uses in his day to day#he’s so annoying#he doesn’t understand social cues and responds in a way that I find weird let’s all laugh#he responds to certain situations aggressively because of trauma oh what an evil bad man let’s not examine this any further#he’s just mean and that’s it#I’m so tired of seeing a character I love being mocked for the exact same things I’m mocked for in real life#he actually values sanitation and hygiene and reacts to unsanitary medical practices with sceptisim what a ignorant jerk#I know I sound bitter don’t worry I’m not oblivious to it#but I think some people saw the way the townsfolk reacted to Daniil and immediately assumed they’re all right#as if one of the main components of the game isn’t how the townsfolk are abrasive and rude to strangers and outsiders#some of you for real sound like a judgemental isolated inhabitant of the town that saw daniil and immediately decided he’s not welcome

When you figure out have to characterise Gale Dekarios without getting a headache lmk
honestly soothing to know this is a Universal Experience
#gale dekarios#baldur's gate 3#bg3#oakweave#I think it's also when you put him next to Halsin that it becomes so much harder#because a lot of popular fic including Gale is Bloodweave and then you can easily fall back onto a bouba/kiki dynamic#but these two are some bouba/bouba motherfuckers#so you have to define them beyond that but ALSO beyond their magical capabilities#because both of their characters are so rooted in having a complicated relationship with being defined by their abilities#while at the same time allowing them to be coloured by their experiences?#which is INSANE because I don't have a 17 intelligence!!!!#I'm not even a native speaker!!! how the fuck am I supposed to emulate Gale's speech pattern in a SECOND LANGUAGE smh#at least halsin has the fucking decency to have an 8 intelligence. thank you good sir#but yeah no this rarepair is a puzzle that I cannot figure out#compels me though#(in other words I've veeerrrrry slowly been working on something while procrastinating all the cleaning I have to do in my house)#(it is deeply self-indulgent and so far Gale has been Entirely Too Quiet to be in character)#(and honestly? I am going to try and Care Less because hey man. come on.)#(do try to let your hobbies be FUN)#flipcitrus#sorry i forgot to tag you i am Bad at Tagging

who up seeing their disorder in a fictional character but feel like its not their place to put a name on it
#id have to be waterboarded before i can talk abt how i see a lot of my adhd and personality in mitsumi iwakura let alone post it#idk how to talk abt this without feeling like im talking over or invalidating ppls experiences relating with a character#someone was talking abt how ppl tie laios' autism to special interest and social difficulties but not much else which kinda flattens it#and then went into a respectful in depth analysis of other autistic behaviour that laios exhibits and it wasnt phrased meanly#its fascinating and important to me to hear someone explain a little bit abt traits that they recognized and often go overlooked#because it does help me learn more about it. but i think thats also where hesitancy kicks in when it comes to depicting it accurately#like i have adhd and some of my adhd symptoms overlap with autism (time blindness and pattern seeking behaviour) but that only means#it feels familiar to me even without having autism. on top of that traits arent always cleanly determined as being /caused/ by#a disorder. to understand my environment i compare it to something unrelated but similar to make it more familiar and for the longest time#i thought that was a personality thing and not an information processing thing since i loved playing pretend in my head as a kid#so if you make a character who experiences that hoping to reach people that also experience that and tell them its not weird or#smth youre making up like. thats the goal. ppl who dont get it arent expected to it just means it doesnt cater to them but it helps them#become familiar to it yk? since i dont have autism myself i dont feel confident i can depict it properly or explain it in my own words#but that doesnt mean im trying to dismiss it or try and cut it out completely.. ill just leave the floor open to someone who /can/#a lot of issues around fanon depictions are when smth is baselessly popularized or a characters personality and behavior is flattened#especially to fit them into a trending meme. its harmless and its supposed to be for fun but it gets tricky when you drag things that#need to be carefully explained beforehand or else it gets lost in translation. like that tweet abt 'hyperfixating' on cooking pasta#once it becomes popular language usually the original meaning is left out for the sake of simplifying it for everyone that when it#circles back theres a sort of hesitancy like. am i using it the way it was intended or am i unknowingly using the popularized version of it#actually thats probably why i felt wrongfooted during diagnosis bc it felt like i was misusing the words i heard to describe what i felt#i /know/ i see a lot of myself in mitsumi because our minds are always somewhere else and we tend to put good faith first and for me#that personal connection is enough. but idk it feels like its always gonna have to be 'palatable' first before i can talk abt it openly#mad respect to writers and creators who stick to their story even if theres the looming fear of ppl misinterpreting it and letting them#have it.. its been almost 2 weeks and i am so close to deleting that m3 dunmeshi drawing bc ppl keep saying chilchuck wouldnt have 200 HP#IT LITERALLY SAYS I MADE IT WHILE WATCHING EP 1. I USED EARTHBOUND LOGIC AND I WASNT EVEN TAKING IT SERIOUSLY CHILL#yapping

*squeezes aine this time*
Read my Yandere! Dottore fics first (⁎⁍̴̆Ɛ⁍̴̆⁎)
Chemistry ๑ Magnum Opus
So @ainescribe decided to surprise me with more Darling fan art, this time of Dottore’s Assistant!! *sobs* I love it so much 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。
Once again, feedback will be in the tags. Thank you so much for enjoying my writing, Aine <3
#feedback#fan art#pranabefall#AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE ( ;∀;)#THE FACT THAT YOU DREW THIS?? AND SO SOON?? give me a moment. i need to cry happily#fun fact aine has made jokes about assistant and 'dead-eyed desi trauma' so my first thought when seeing this fan art was#'wow you can rlly see the desi trauma in her eyes' xD i say this both jokingly and seriously cuz AHH HER EXPRESSION!!#it's hard for me to describe visual art + techniques but you did such a good job at depicting assistant's emotions#is it bc of the thicker line art used for the eyes + eyebrows?? the lil eyebags/ creases under her eyes?? the uneven shading for her irises#all of that combined with her jaded facial expression and body language?? idk but just know that i love this depiction of assistant#especially since her emotions are an important aspect of her character design (to me at least)#moving on i love your original design for her. once again it's always interesting to see how my readers imagine and depict my darlings#and the way you drew her including the pose and design....she looks like a character from an animated show or visual novel!!#just put her name. caption. and dialogue on the side then she's ready to be romanced. 100% the fan-favorite character <3#i rlly like how you drew her hair!! it looks very fluffy and voluminous (sorry idk many terms for haircare either)#the scar is an interesting detail. makes me wonder if she got it before. during. or after the akademiya?? from an expedition/ experiment??#either way. ohohoho the potential....i imagine the scar serving as a lifelong reminder to assistant of what she has sacrificed for her#scientific curiosity and career. not to mention that the scar is located on her FACE which is 1) the body part most crucial to a person's#identity 2) makes the scar difficult to ignore. to the point that some people may recognize assistant's face mainly bc of her scar#poor assistant. at least dottore is one to appreciate such traits. i can see him administering first aid or lovingly tracing the scar......#moving on to her uniform. i love that it's practical but also stylish in its own way. a perfect balance methinks uwu#the patterned lapels. the lil brooch. the leather armbands. the fatui symbol. the tucked shirt and high-waist pants.....aaaahhhh i just#love these small details!! and it does look like smth which a fatuus would wear on the job~#i think that's all i have to say on assistant!! once again. thank you thank you THANK YOU FOR EXPRESSING YOUR LOVE FOR MY WRITING AND MY#DARLINGS!! it means the world to me and i'll always cherish our rambles and brainrot <3#dottore x reader#yandere dottore x reader#yandere fatui harbingers#fatui x reader#genshin x reader

i was looking up tips for formatting bilingual books (for example, a copy of idk the iliad with ancient greek on one side, english translation on the other), but i didn’t know the word describing this kind of format 🤔
so i was stringing together keywords like “book with two languages” and one of the results was a reddit post with someone trying to find a book that alternates between multiple languages, i.e., there are no translations, it’s it’s one text, but half of the story is in english, then the other half, or interwoven throughout, is in french or whatever
and it took strength to not suggest the hussite trilogy 🥴
#the elbow-high diaries#i need to read it a second time for the more bg characters and the politics. and i need to read it a third time for the dante.#and im chewing away at manuscript discovered in a dragon’s cave rn and#im kind of torn between trying to read it quickly (learn the content) and trying to dissect sentences and spelling (learn some vocabulary)#so you could say im half of the time trying to pay attention to words and their spelling and learn them based on the translation given#and then i get caught somewhat off guard#im like ‘ok that spelling is… that’s not polish. what is this. german.’#‘okay got it. alright [moves down page] ok now he’s just speaking latin for fun now’#i’m not complaining to be clear i just find it funny because there’s so many damn references and weaving together of different#languages cultures literary traditions canons mythologies etc.#it reminds me when i had just started reading interviews with sapkowski#and before then i had just read season of storms and i was like ‘what is all this latin how pretentious is he’#and then i read the interviews and i was like oh. that’s just how he talks#when the intellectual regis randomly quotes cicero in lotl… i can see where that came from#also again to be clear i don’t think it makes one particularly uniquely intellectual to know and use multiple languages#i think its probably what the global norm is#but what makes it funny with andrzej sapkowski is that#as dandelion said about regis: ‘(he) was an intellectual. and liked to demonstrate it’#but i think this is what i like about his writing—particularly bc i never was especially close to anyone like this irl#though i think this is maybe for the best… sometimes… intellectuals are best read and not known 😬😅
