TRAINEE MISSIONS 016 ♥ INTERVIEW SOLO
“woah... I didn't realize how much I had missed the country side.”
jaekyung sighs as she sits down, hands tugged beneath her thighs as she looks around the room before her gaze lands on the camera and the staff interviewing her. it's been an eventful day so far and now that she settles down and lets the reflection begin, a content yet nostalgic smile stretches over her lips.
"I didn't realize how much I had missed the country side. today was an amazing day. the villagers are so nice, they remind me of home," she explains, letting the smile remain on her lips as she continues on excitedly. "when I heard we'd be cleared to join this variety program alongside the activities for lgc girls japan I was beyond happy. I enjoy programs like these a lot and to be in... well to be in my element like this is just a big added plus!"
with a laugh she tugs a strand of hair behind her ear that had come loose from the ponytail she'd tied them into out of convenience earlier. "it's been only one day but I already met so many wonderful girls I didn't get the chance to really talk to before. in particular gaeun and lili! helping lili figure out the best way to clean the chicken coops made me giggle," she admits, recalling the activity with a grin.
"tasks like these can be an acquired taste for someone who grew up in the city. I'm so used to the task and the smell cause I grew up with both but I also just learned all the tricks how to deal with them in the most efficient way. I'm glad I can use my knowledge to make things easier for the other girls," she continues to narrates, seeing in the staff's face that she was apparently already giving all the answers to the questions they had prepared to ask her. in turn jaekyung just smiled wider, realizing that all her training and past experience was paying off, allowing her to develop a better sense for these type of activities.
they truly mean it when they say you notice your progress in the most unexpected ways.
"I can't wait for the rest of the weekend to unfold. i'm looking forward to what challenge we'll be facing tomorrow!"

Torturing myself with ways Disney changed Star Wars - Violence & Strength part 2

If you like the sequels and specifically like Rey, you may want to skip this post. As a character I think she - as might be expected from the face of the sequel trilogy - is the purist distillation of how Disney fundamentally changed the narrative role of strength and violence, and power more generally.
I also think this broadly makes for an uninteresting character that has limited efficacy as part of a story, and is almost purely a marketing/fan service vehicle.
On violence and strength: Rey basically wins every single meaningful fight she gets into. Almost every physical confrontation is an illustration of how badass and competent she is. This is true throughout the trilogy.
In TFA her first confrontation is with Finn, a trained storm trooper raised from childhood to be a soldier. Rey effortlessly disarms him and gets him on the ground. Sure, she has a weapon and he doesn't but still.
Compare this with Luke's first few conflicts - he is knocked out by the Tuskens, he needs Ben to save him in the cantina.
There is the climactic fight with Kylo Ren. First, she "overpowers" Kylo and is able to snatch the lightsaber out of his Force grip, and then she defeats him in a duel. I know Kylo had been shot by Chewie but when I watch that scene I don't see anything that is meant to indicate he is operating at far below his best.
Again, compare this to either Luke or Anakin's first duels (after significantly more training). They both lose, badly, and are dismembered. Sure, Vader and Dooku are perhaps meant to be understood as far more powerful and dangerous than Kylo but the point remains.
Rey actually has limited fights in TLJ - but the throne room is clearly the most meaningful one. Again, pertinent observations: Rey (and Kylo) are able to defeat 8 Praetorian guards (who have the visual and contextual signal of "baddies you should worry about, not regular mooks"). Her and Kylo then again play tug of war with the lightsaber, and are evenly matched to the point that the saber gets ripped in half.
Again - Rey doesn't lose. In fact, we get a long lingering fight scene to show how cool and bass and good at fighting she is. She is tempted by Kylo, tempted by the dark side, and rejects it.
Completely unscathed, it is worth adding.
Again, compare this with Luke (tempted and mutilated by his father), or Anakin who gives in to the dark (on Tattooine and arguably on Geonosis) and is mutilated physically and spiritually in doing so.
Finally we get to TROS.
Rey's first "fight" is with Kylo where she destroys his TIE with a saber, then uses force lightning to destroy a ship (and maybe but turns out not actually kill Chewie).
Her second is the vision/teleport duel with Kylo across the ship and the planet. Again, it is a draw, Rey certainly doesn't lose.
She and Kylo duel again on the wreckage of the DS. Maybe Kylo is distracted but he certainly isn't winning, and Rey then stabs him (which is commonly believed to indicate someone "winning" a sword fight). She then Force heals him and saves his life.
On Exegol her and Ben Solo then murder their way through the Praetorians and Knights of Ren, before directly confronting Palpatine. The jeopardy in the narrative is created by the fact that if Rey kills Palpatine out of anger, she becomes a Sith, but if she doesn't kill him she dies and so does the Resistance. Rey then hears the voices of all the past Jedi - including, just in case we didn't get it, Anakin Skywalker telling her to bring balance to the Force like he did (did he?) - and magically teleports Ben's lightsaber so she can dual wield and redirect the lightning Palpatine is blasting and kill shim with that.
She then dies from the effort (before immediately being brought back to life by Ben).
Again, contrast this with Anakin's fight with Obi-Wan on Mustafar or Luke's confrontation with Vader on DS2. Anakin and Obi-Wan both lose on Mustafar - the mere act of engaging in violence empowers the Dark and ultimately completes the creation of Darth Vader.
Luke only wins by throwing down his saber, by refusing to meet violence with violence.
Lucas had a clear metaphysical logic that is reflected in the use and role of violence.
Violence has a cost. There is no escaping that. Violence is almost always wrong - even if you believe it to be right and approach it dispassionately. There is no just killing, not such that your soul can survive.
Luke and Anakin are - narratively - consistently punished for choosing violence. Every time they try and solve a problem with violence they lose a loved one, a body part, a piece of their soul.
The same is true - to a lesser degree - for Obi-Wan. He defeats Maul but loses Qui-Gon. His decision to follow Dooku results in his and Anakin's injuries and achieves nothing. He is the one who swings a saber through whatever limited remains of Anakin might exist and heralds the final birth of Vader.
Contrast this with the fight on the DS. Obi-Wan knows there is no victory in fighting Vader, but in refusing to fight, in sheathing his sword, he can achieve a power far greater than the Sith can imagine.
TLJ's final scene where Mirage Luke confronts Kylo is actually also consistent with this, and it's why it is in isolation some of my absolute favourite Star Wars.
TLJ is also very confusing while it DOES apply the same logic as Lucas to Luke (try and kill your sleeping nephew = bad, using the Force to distract the First Order while you never actually harm anyone = good) it doesn't to Rey or Kylo.
Disney - by contrast - certainly do not treat violence in the same way. In fact, Disney takes a starkly different view which is almost readable as "might makes right" or maybe more accurately "being right makes you mighty".
Rey is good and pure and therefore she wins all her fights. She is on the side of the Light and so cannot lose. Kylo Ren, by contrast, is Evil and so despite more training and experience he consistently loses. It is only when he fights for the right reasons - killing Snoke and his guards to help Rey, or saving Rey from Palpatine - that he wins.
This is... distinctly weird. How, for example, are we meant to reinterpret the original 6 films or the wider Star Wars universe with this logic? I take it Palpatine was mostly right?
What you might say is actually that violence has no narrative weight. Maybe. That is as much of a change from Lucas as anything else but it also significantly limits the ability to tell a story in the context of the medium of sci fi action movies.
And that is actually the point, I think. There is no meaningful narrative interpretation of violence in the Disney films. The fight scenes serve no real purpose - they do not represent crucibles in which characters develop and transform, nor do they provide any level or moral insight.
They are purely vehicles for a) cool cinematography (and to be clear, the Sequels are consistently BEAUTIFUL and the fights scenes are some of the best) and b) emphasising how awesome the poster girl is and how neat it would be if you bought Lego and action figures and and and.

WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITY 002 ♥ MEETING SOLO
“i feel like... maybe there's more to this than performing.”
Being lead to have a meeting with one of her coaches left Jaekyung curious above all else. She wasn't worried about her performance. She's received a lot of opportunities to grow through LGC Girls Japan. While she wasn't the happiest that after failing to debut with Nova she now still didn't seem fit to join the ranks of Fabula either, Jaekyung was convinced the company saw some value in her somehow. It was just a matter of if their visions aligned which was a question she'd been asking herself more and more lately.
"what do you think are your strengths right now," was the first question she received and couldn't help but hum as her brow threatened to raise in sceptic sarcasm. Did it matter what she answered here? The company would do with her what they thought her strengths to be either way, no? "Well, modeling seems to be one," she thus replies with a tilt of her head and a smile. While she loved modeling, she'd come here to be an idol and not a model. Jaekyung wanted to stand on a stage, go on tours, film music videos and record songs. 5 years in and she was getting the tiniest bit impatient. "I know I'm a great performer and a good singer. so that would be the three skills i'd consider my strengths," she concludes with a nod and a diplomatic smile. An attitude would get her no where after all.
which was proven to her as her coach nodded in approval before continuing forth. "what are three skills that you would like to work on in the next few months?" this one was a little harder to answer or maybe not hard at all- if she gave it a second thought. "ideally i'd probably want to continue and double down on training to be an even better vocalist and performer- dancing included. I also wonder what I might be lacking though? Or test my limits. I've explored so many different things under legacy, the only one missing would be acting at this point. I never got the chance to be part of one of the musical productions legacy had which I would have loved. Perhaps I need to work on my acting to be considered for a project like that?"
"then if given a chance, what types of gigs would you be interested in participating? musicals?" "yeah," she is quick to reply, albeit thoughtful. "it's truly the one thing I haven't done or haven't had the chance to explore. back in school I really enjoyed our musical productions. acting in general, really. so i'd even be open to try a drama as well? i feel like that'd be interesting. it's hard to really know what direction to go... there's so many possibilities but if you spread yourself too thin, you'll risk falling behind those who are more focused."
"would that be one of the lessons that you've learned about yourself during your time here in legacy?" "definitely," she agrees wholeheartedly, chewing on the inside of her cheek. "I came here with one goal in mind: to stand on a stage and perform. that was all I ever wanted, all I had trained towards. when I felt i was ready- admittedly I was hoping i'd debut first chance I get. but somehow... I feel like the company hasn't found my place yet and I'm not sure where to keep looking? how should I change? is it okay if I want to hold onto my original goal? should I be more flexible? should I stay myself? those are questions I began asking myself the more people I see debut around me. what do they have that I don't? It's a question I've been asking myself a lot lately. Should I re-center my focus? I've received a lot of attention for my looks- got a lot of modeling gigs and contracts- should I double down on this instead and try focus on modeling? there's a lot of questions I have no answers to and I'm not sure who to ask that will or can answer me. All I can do right now is to keep going and keep working and do what I do best and hope that i'll find answers down the way. that's one of the most important things I've learned- you can't rush these things. sooner or later you'll find your way somehow." the coach stares at her, taken aback and jaekyung can tell they're about to make a comment about how she matured so she just scrunches her nose and waves her hands vaguely. "nuh uh~ don't say it, please! i'm not ready to feel old!"
and just like that they're back to laughing. jaekyung was simply not ready to grow up just yet.

Ben found himself floating above a colorful village surrounded by dense, dark green jungle. He knew this was a dream, and yet it did not feel like his usual dreams nor did it feel like the frequent nightmares that plagued his sleep. There was a calm to this dream, a comfort, an acceptance like he’d never felt before.
He floated closer to the village. It was filled with all manner of people though the most common by far was an alien species he did not recognize. They were similar, in a way, to twi’leks, nautolans, or togruta, sporting several leku-like tendrils, and colorful skin tones decorated with unique patterns, but they had bone and scale-like plates covering their foreheads reminiscent of crowns. He wanted to explore this place, to taste all the different foods he could smell from the various street vendors that lined the main thoroughfare. He floated just above the roofs of the lowest buildings and something within the dream stopped him from getting closer. He grumbled a colorful word he’d heard one of the other students say under his breath.
A shuttle flew low over his head and landed at the small pad located at the far side of the village. It wasn’t a model he recognized, it was painted black and had wings that folded from horizontal into vertical position as it landed, similar to the old Imperial transports.
He drifted closer to that end of the village until he bounced off another invisible barrier. He rolled his eyes and stopped. He watched as two men departed the shuttle. One dressed in all black with a helmet trimmed in silver. He felt familiar to Ben, but darker than anyone he’d ever met. This man walked with a heavy stride, like he wanted people to know he was coming. The people avoided him, flowing around him like water flowing around a stone in the river. Ben couldn’t tell if it was just the man’s presence or a trick of the Force that he was using.
The other man was dressed in a military uniform. Not too dissimilar to those worn by the old Imperials. This man had red hair and pale skin, a stark contract against the black of his uniform. Though Ben could not hear what the two were discussing, he got the impression that the man in uniform was frustrated, annoyed at the man in the helmet, though his gait never faltered from the military precision he moved with. What stuck with Ben the most, however, were the piercing blue-green eyes that watched the crowds around them with cold calculation.
Ben felt a pull to this man he’d never experienced before. It tickled his curiosity. The man felt like a black hole, pulling and devouring everything before him and yet, there was a calmness about him. The type of calmness one only felt in the middle of a mountain forest during the depths of winter. His companion on the other hand felt like a wild monstrous beast stalking the shadows with blood and ash following in his wake. Where one fascinated Ben, the other frightened him.
The scene faded and turned to night. Ben stood at the edge of a clearing. At the center was a crackling campfire. Children sat around it on log benches while an older alien sat before them. His skin pastel yellow skin faded to almost grey, his face wrinkled with years of laughter. Adults of all species stood or sat on the outskirts of the fire’s glow, included the two men from earlier. The helmeted and cloaked man leaned against a tree, he appeared relaxed but there was tension to his shoulders and crossed arms. The other man stood nearby; he fiddled with the cuffs of his uniform and had a thin line to his lips. He glared at his surroundings and pointedly avoided looking at his companion.
The old story teller was speaking and realizing that he could hear and understand the elder, Ben crept closer, taking an empty seat on one of the benches with the other children.
“Long ago, well before the Empire cast it’s shadow over the galaxy, well after the fall of the Sith Empire, a lost son of our world returned. He had never stepped foot upon our soil, his family stolen generations before his time.
“His body bore the marks of many wars and the color had faded from his scales with age. Yet he did not come with weapon in hand. He came to listen and wander the wilds. He spent days out in the jungle, we warned him to respect it, or it would chew him up.” The elder made chomping motions with his hands towards the nearest kids, who squealed and giggled. He smiled. “The lost son would nod and thank us for the warnings. He always returned.
“He spoke little of his past, but even here, untouched and overlooked by Empires and Republics alike we knew him. Few of our kind walk the stars. Fewer still are known to lead the Knights of Ren. To us he was legend, yet when ask who he was, the lost son would only smile sadly and say ‘I’m a lost soul seeking a long forgotten place.’
“We interrogated him: Were you a thief, a marauder, a raider, a warrior, a defender, or protector? For travelers had spoken of the Knights and few agreed on what they were, surely their leader would have the answer.
“’All of that, and more.’ the lost son replied. He never spoke of it again.
“Before he left this world, he gave a message to the Elder of our Village. ‘One seeking the past will arrive here. His coming will herald a great flood of darkness that will leave no world untouched. Aid him. Or be swallowed by Chaos.’”
The elder and the listening children faded away and Ben found himself on a path leading to a carved stone mausoleum somewhere deep in the jungle. It was raining. He stepped closer, his heavy boots squelching the mud beneath their soles. The cemetery was well cared for, but felt ancient. The hairs a the back on his neck stood on end. Shadowy figured watched from the periphery of his vision.
When he reached the mausoleum door, he reached out, not with his bare hand but a gloved one and pushed open the door. Something called to him from within the crypt. Something he needed to find. It tugged at him. He stumbled against the steps. He looked down and his body glad in black robes and armor, thick murky ooze grasping at his legs.
He struggled but it only tightened its grip, yanking him down. He reached out with the Force but felt nothing. The ooze rolled over him; it covered his face, filled his lungs. He cried out but no sound emerged.
Ben jolted awake, his bed sheets twisted and tangled around his body. His heart pounded and he gasped for air. The dream quickly fading as he grasped to remember what he saw before the nightmare took hold, but it was gone. The only thing he remembered were piercing blue-green eyes.
He untangled himself and rolled up into a sitting position. He rubbed his hand across his face and through his damp hair. He sighed. It was going to be another hot and humid summer day. He glanced out his only window to see the warm glow of the sun brightening the horizon.
“Kriff…” He flung what remained of his bedsheets off and bolted to the basin of water to wash up. It was warm, but he didn’t have time to cool it, something he’d only recently learned how to do with the Force.
He was scheduled to help Lena in the kitchens before morning meditation. Normally, he would jog for 15 minutes before hand. It usually helped him meditate, now he’d be lucky to avoid his Uncle’s chastisement for falling asleep during meditation, but nothing compared to being berated by Lena if he burned the porridge again because he dozed off. He pulled his summer robes over his head, snatched up his wooden practice blade, and ran out the door.

Mostly complete discography of the L.A. alt rock band Concrete Blonde, not including singles or "best of" collections.
Their best-known album is BLOODLETTING, with its Anne Rice-inspired title track, "Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)"; the morose ballad "Joey" (one of their few songs that got significant radio traction); and their cover of Andy Prieboy's AIDS crisis valedictory "Tomorrow, Wendy." Their best album is probably 1993's MEXICAN MOON, a return to form after the weird indulgence of WALKING IN LONDON (which sounds like an '80s Heart album), but their 1986 debut defined their sound, and in some ways they never topped it.
STILL IN HOLLYWOOD is not an album but a compilation of B-sides and non-album tracks, including their fiery cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" (from the soundtrack of PUMP UP THE VOLUME), and covers of songs by Jimmy Hendrix, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan. It unfortunately doesn't include their song "Tomorrow's Gonna Be" (by Tom Boles and Mark Walton) from the soundtrack of a very obscure 1986 movie called ECHO PARK (which was credited under the name "Johnette," although Jim Mankey's guitar line is immediately recognizable), but it has some other gems, like Johnette Napolitano's implish road trip anthem "100 Games of Solitaire."

"In Steinkellner’s version of Summer Stock, Jane Falbury (Danielle Wade) and “Pop,” her father (Stephen Lee Anderson), are struggling to hang on to the family farm. Their farm is one of the few in the Connecticut River Valley that hasn’t been absorbed by the Wingates, whose holdings completely surround theirs.
The widow Margaret Wingate (Veanne Cox), whom son Orville (Will Roland) aptly describes as having eyes “as cold as death itself,” plans to absorb the Falbury farm by the simple expedient of having Orville marry Jane. After all the two kids had decided they were engaged in first grade!
Enter the prodigal younger sister Gloria (Arianna Rosario) who has been seduced by the lure of the Great White Way. She returns to the farm bringing along Joe Ross (Corbin Bleu in the Gene Kelly role), the director of the show that will make her a star, its composer Phil Filmore (Gilbert L. Bailey II), and the entire company. She has generously offered the company, which can’t afford rehearsal space in New York, the use of the family farm’s barn. Sister Jane reluctantly agrees to the intrusion with the proviso that the thespians will double as farm hands.
As rehearsals progress, Phil discovers that Orville, a bit of a doormat who has been raised with the understanding that he will never have to work, is a musical wunderkind. He is enlisted to work his magic on the show’s score and begins to blossom.
Widow Wingate takes umbrage with all this and vows to shut the enterprise down. Fortunately, the cold embers in her soul are stirred to renewed life by her encounter with Montgomery Leach (J. Anthony Crane), the has-been ham enlisted to give Ross’s show some cachet, so all might not be lost.

They make this Summer Stock a veritable feast of nostalgia. I was especially taken by the amusing way Steinkellner used Jackie Gleason’s theme song “Always” to further widow Wingate’s plot to get Jane and Orville hitched.

Orville, who has found personal liberation in show biz, is accorded a moment that reminded me of a similar scene in the musical version of The Producers. In a triumphant declaration of his emergence from under his mother’s thumb he exults, “I’m in the theatre! And I love it!” The audience loved it, too.

As director, Feore has elicited some wonderful performances, especially from subsidiary characters. Veanne Cox is splendid as Margaret Wingate as is J. Anthony Crane as Montgomery Leach, the faded matinee idol. Will Roland (Orville) and Gilbert L. Bailey II (Phil) both have wonderful moments and their intense professional friendship is one of the show’s highlights."
