playful land presents such genuinely baffling themes and throughlines that i am rendered speechless in its wake. why is "SCHOOL IS COOL!" a theme for this event when the more important thing should be the human trafficking. why do they intersperse tense moments with "you should go to class! there's so many good things about going to school!"

like, if the audience for this game was younger... well, it probably wouldn't be the same game, but the VERY hamfisted "stay in school" message would make more sense. but, like, this kind of game is targeted towards older teens and young adults. people who are finishing secondary, are high school graduates, college students, and college graduates. this kind of theme is so bizarre.

also, it is strongly implied that there are no public school systems in twisted wonderland??? like, is there NO nation that has free public education??? why does fellow honest/ernesto foulworth (what a name lmao) believe that high school is for rich kids only?? what the fuck is going on??? Well, nobody’s made a study on it yet, but that’s probably to do with the fact that the Institute’s parental leave technically starts as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. I have no obligation to come into work, but I actually find it quite soothing! There might actually be something strange going on, to be honest, because I’ve started to feel like baby and I are happier in the office.

But so far, no psychic conversations or eldritch knowledge of our forebears. Maybe that’s only in the third trimester?

overconsumption in rich countries is chronic and unsustainable but by that I mean if we keep going it'll kill us. with this in mind it's pretty unfortunate how fashion brands have bred a youth culture where personal expression (and even personhood as a whole?) is based primarily on how one dresses, but in this case it doesn't at all mean making or modifying or repurposing older clothes as many past protest subcultures did, it just means buying loads of stuff you don't need and calling it core to your sense of self. the whole seasonal collection changeovers the industry does is already terrible but the fact it doesn't seem like more young people are vocally calling out this manufactured identity making is pretty dire. like this is co-optation of self-expression by multiple industries... I'm almost anti-consumption at this point like we just don't need any of this stuff )):

like yes buying secondhand is good but even better would be to not base your self-expression on mix-and-match clothing items or aesthetics or whatever to begin with. free your mind, instead become known as the woman who can identify all the regional plants or rock climb or something
