Good News - June 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $Kaybarr1735! And if you tip me and give me a way to contact you, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week!
1. Rare foal born on estate for first time in 100 years
“The Food Museum at Abbot's Hall in Stowmarket, Suffolk, is home to a small number of Suffolk Punch horses - a breed considered critically endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. A female foal was born on Saturday and has been named Abbots Juno to honour the last horse born at the museum in 1924. [...] Juno is just one of 12 fillies born so far this year in the country and she could potentially help produce more of the breed in the future.”
2. The cement that could turn your house into a giant battery
“[Scientists] at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have found a way of creating an energy storage device known as a supercapacitor from three basic, cheap materials – water, cement and a soot-like substance called carbon black. [... Supercapacitators] can charge much more quickly than a lithium ion battery and don't suffer from the same levels of degradation in performance. [... Future applications of this concrete might include] roads that store solar energy and then release it to recharge electric cars wirelessly as they drive along a road [... and] energy-storing foundations of houses.”
3. New road lights, fewer dead insects—insect-friendly lighting successfully tested
“Tailored and shielded road lights make the light source almost invisible outside the illuminated area and significantly reduces the lethal attraction for flying insects in different environments. [...] The new LED luminaires deliver more focused light, reduce spill light, and are shielded above and to the side to minimize light pollution. [... In contrast,] dimming the conventional lights by a factor of 5 had no significant effect on insect attraction.”
4. When LGBTQ health is at stake, patient navigators are ready to help
“[S]ome health care systems have begun to offer guides, or navigators, to get people the help they need. [... W]hether they're just looking for a new doctor or taking the first step toward getting gender-affirming care, "a lot of our patients really benefit from having someone like me who is there to make sure that they are getting connected with a person who is immediately going to provide a safe environment for them." [... A navigator] also connects people with LGBTQ community organizations, social groups and peer support groups.”
5. Tech company to help tackle invasive plant species
“Himalayan balsam has very sugary nectar which tempts bees and other pollinators away from native plants, thereby preventing them from producing seed. It outcompetes native plant species for resources such as sunlight, space and nutrients. [...] The volunteer scheme is open to all GWT WilderGlos users who have a smartphone and can download the Crowdorsa app, where they can then earn up to 25p per square meter of Balsam removed.”
6. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Provides Over $14 Million to Benefit Local Communities, Clean Waterways and Recreational Boaters
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is distributing more than $14 million in Clean Vessel Act grants to improve water quality and increase opportunities for fishing, shellfish harvests and safe swimming in the nation’s waterways. By helping recreational boaters properly dispose of sewage, this year’s grants will improve conditions for local communities, wildlife and recreational boaters in 18 states and Guam.”
7. Bornean clouded leopard family filmed in wild for first time ever
“Camera traps in Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo have captured a Bornean clouded leopard mother and her two cubs wandering through a forest. It's the first time a family of these endangered leopards has been caught on camera in the wild, according [to] staff from the Orangutan Foundation who placed camera traps throughout the forest to learn more about the elusive species.”
8. Toy library helps parents save money 'and the planet'
“Started in 2015 by Annie Berry, South Bristol's toy library aims to reduce waste and allow more children access to more - and sometimes expensive - toys. [...] Ms Berry partnered with the St Philips recycling centre on a pilot project to rescue items back from landfill, bringing more toys into the library. [...] [P]eople use it to support the environment, take out toys that they might not have the space for at home or be able to afford, and allow children to pick non-gender specific toys.”
9. Chicago Receives $3M Grant to Inventory Its Trees and Create Plan to Manage City’s Urban Forest
“The Chicago Park District received a $1.48 million grant [“made available through the federal Inflation Reduction Act”] to complete a 100% inventory of its estimated 250,000 trees, develop an urban forestry management plan and plant 200 trees in disadvantaged areas with the highest need. As with the city, development of the management plan is expected to involve significant community input.”
10. Strong Public Support for Indigenous Co-Stewardship Plan for Bears Ears National Monument
“[The NFW has a] plan to collaboratively steward Bears Ears National Monument to safeguard wildlife, protect cultural resources, and better manage outdoor recreation. The plan was the result of a two-year collaboration among the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition and upholds Tribal sovereignty, incorporates Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and responsibly manages the monument for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation while ensuring the continued health of the ecosystem.”

"Bullitt" (1968) was director Peter Yates' first American film. He was hired after Steve McQueen saw his 1967 U.K. feature "Robbery," with its extended car chase. Joseph E. Levine, whose Embassy Pictures had distributed "Robbery," did not like the film much, but Alan Trustman, who saw the picture the week he was writing the "Bullitt" chase scenes, insisted that McQueen, his Solar Productions partner Robert Relyea and producer Philip D'Antoni (none of whom had ever heard of Yates) see "Robbery" and consider Yates as director for "Bullitt."
Bullitt is notable for its extensive use of actual locations rather than studio sets, most notably the city of San Francisco, California, and its attention to procedural detail, from police evidence processing to emergency-room procedures. Yates' use of the new lightweight Arriflex cameras allowed for greater flexibility in location shooting.
At the time of the film's release, the exciting car chase scenes featuring McQueen at the wheel in all driver-visual scenes generated prodigious excitement. Film critic Leonard Maltin has called it a "now-classic car chase, one of the screen's all-time best." Fellow critic Emanuel Levy wrote in 2003, "'Bullitt' contains one of the most exciting car chases in film history, a sequence that revolutionized Hollywood's standards."
Drivers' point-of-view shots were used to give the audience a participants' feel of the chase. Filming took three weeks, resulting in 9 minutes 42 seconds of pursuit. McQueen, a world-class racecar driver at the time, drove in the close-up scenes, while stunt coordinator Carey Loftin, stuntman and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins, and McQueen's usual stunt driver, Loren Janes, drove for the high-speed parts of the chase and performed other dangerous stunts.
Billy Fraker, the cinematographer for the film, attributed the success of the chase sequence primarily to the work of the editor, Frank P. Keller.
The editing of the scene was not without difficulties. Noted editor Ralph Rosenblum wrote in 1979, "Those who care about such things may know that during the filming of the climactic chase scene in 'Bullitt,' an out-of-control car filled with dummies tripped a wire which prematurely sent a costly set up in flames, and that editor Frank Keller salvaged the near-catastrophe with a clever and unusual juxtaposition of images that made the explosion appear to go off on time." Vibe Check Part 3: Quid Pro Bro
The Frat Boy Au, Part 3
Read Previous on Ao3 or tumblr.
Steve wakes almost falling out of a chair.
He blinks, looking around the empty lecture hall and then finally looking up at the girl who’s still shaking him.
“Hey, yo, I’m up, I’m awake!” He wriggled out of her iron grip.
“You have to leave.”
“When did I pass out?”
The girl scoffs rolling her eyes hard, “Like halfway through the lecture, dingus. You snore, by the way.”
“I do not!” He snapped. Billy’s never said anything, and they’d roomed together all of last year.
“Oh yeah,” she nodded, crossing her arms. “Drool too.”
Steve just began to gather his books, “Why are you even here? Just let me drool.”
“I’m the TA,” She smirked. “And I didn’t want to be caught grading your absolutely half baked paper.”
“Yeah,” he smirked right back, giving her a little of the patented Harrington sparkle. “A likely excuse.”
She just huffs, heading back to the front of the room and gathering some papers, “you try to help a guy.”
“Want me to walk you home?” He glanced at his watch. “Kinda late.”
“I live off campus.”
“Your car, then.”
She blinks at him, “you’re not getting in my pants.”
“Excuse me?”
“I’m gay.”
“And I’m just offering a walk home,” Steve shook his head, “you try to help a girl.”
She pauses, “you’re serious. You don’t have to do that.”
He nods, “yeah I am, dude, it’s like 9 pm. I’m not gonna let you walk home alone.”
She’s pretty, short hair sort of messy around her freckled face, which morphs slowly from a scowl into a more confused expression.
“Okay, I guess.”
“You thought I would just leave you in the lurch?”
“Not-“ She just laughs and shakes her head. “Fine, dingus. Prove to me that frat boys aren’t all the same.”
“We’re not!”
“Your taking a nap during the lecture non withstanding. Like it wasn’t even during a film day.”
Steve massaged the back of his neck, “My neighbor at the house has this girlfriend, she’s like a banshee. We didn’t sleep at all last night.”
She swung a multicolored patchwork tote bag onto her shoulder, “Can’t you just outbang him? Fight fire with fire?”
Steve’s brows rose as he scrambled to shove his notes into his backpack. “Whoah, I didn’t expect you to say that!”
She giggles, “I’m a TA not a nun.”
“Fair enough. How do you get to be a TA anyway?” He holds open the heavy metal door as she sails past, her tote bag hitting him hard in the solar plexus as she did.
“Sorry,” She says. “You take enough of Herman’s classes that he starts to remember your face. It’s a blessing and a curse, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. And the pay is dismal.”
“You get paid too?” He followed her down the hallway and out into the brisk fall air.
“I thought frat boys had all the money for keg parties and togas and house dues and lawsuits…”
“Not all of us,” He scoffs, as if he isn’t absolutely the exact type of guy she’s talking about. “It’s always good to let the brothers know about stuff like this.”
She rolls her eyes, “I can’t believe you actually talk like that.”
“What? Brothers?”
“Yeah,” she raises one shoulder. “Isn’t your boyfriend one of your brothers? Isn’t that a bit creepy?”
At first he thinks it’s the fall wind. That whooshing sound.
“What?” He realizes he’s frozen, locked to the spot in his adidas slides, staring at a tree rather than her.
“Oh,” She falters in her skipping. “Did you two break up?”
“Who are you talking about?”
“Uh, I don’t really know his name but he used to walk you to class last semester for Women in Film? Blonde guy with the curls? He has an embarrassing and frankly dated 80s thing going on?” She blinks at him. “God, you did break up. I’m so sorry, Steve.”
“How… wh… we’re not boyfriends,” he finally manages to stutter after a few seconds of autumn-chilled silence.
“Oh,” Her expression morphs into pity and it’s fucking awful. “I get it.”
“No, no I… we’re not like that at all. Billy and I are roommates. We’re…” he couldn’t bring himself to say brothers, his mind still scrambled. “Friends.”
“Oh.” She tips her chin down. “Sorry. My mistake.”
After another stilted second, they start to walk again with purpose towards the parking garage.
But she keeps sort of glancing over at him. Like she’s checking.
“We’re just friends,” He repeats after a moment.
“Got it.”
“Nothing going on there.”
“Okay.”
“And we’re straight.”
“Interesting how that came up last.”
“I’m fucking serious. We’re just friends.”
“Got it. Broken gaydar. It happens,” She shrugs, and he tries to do it too. Just like… no big deal.
But he can’t seem to stop wanting to say it. They’re just friends. How could anyone read them as anything else.
The more he thinks about it the funnier it seems. Of course nothing is going on, it’s so crazy that she thought so. He’ll have to tell Billy, even though the idea makes him feel like he has a nest of angry scorpions in his stomach.
Finally, they turn sharply for the nearest dorm, just past the garage near the theatre building.
“I thought you said you lived off campus.”
“I thought you might be a serial killer. I don’t know which one of us is more disappointed.”
He laughed through his choked throat. “I’m Steve, by the way.”
“I know. You’re Steve ‘the Hair’ Harrington. You’re the party chair for Theta House and you’re like,” she puts on a silly high voice, “so cute.”
“And straight.”
“And straight, that too,” she giggles a little nervously. “I’m Robin Buckley. We’ve had classes together for two years.”
He rocks back on his heels, “you did the John Waters short for Dr Casey’s class. That shit was legit.”
“That’s me,” She smiled, “sorry about confusing you and you’re friend earlier. You’re just so… anyway. See you next time.”
“See you next time, Robin,” He says.
The whole way back to the house he can’t shake the feeling. Like a leaf blowing on the back of his leg he’s jumpy, sure he’s feeling spiders and skeletons.
He whips out his phone and dials the first number he can think of. Surely it will all just seem like a joke tomorrow. A harmless mistake.
“Hey,” Billy picks up on the second ring.
And it’s like all the words in the world have dried up in his throat and he can’t speak for the corpses. He just makes a little aborted wheeze.
“Stevie? What’s up?” Billy asks.
“D-do… do I snore?” He asks, not even sure where that came from.
“A little. But it’s cute. Why, is some girl giving you grief?”
Steve is so nervous he just up and disconnects the call. The wind blows at the name of his neck and his whole body breaks out in goosebumps.

1 December 1969
Ringo Starr is interviewed in a car and a rowboat for the BBC program Line-Up. While supposedly the to promote The Magic Christian, that film is not mentioned in the final cut, he does mention that there are 50 billion planets in the solar system before correcting himself to five, says he hopes he sees a prime minister who is "black, beautiful and 26," and lobbies for the decriminalization of marijuana.
Are these things related? You decide!

•Andrew Hozier X reader
-Warnings: none, fluff and Andrew think you’re trying to kill him.
~Enjoy!~
You and Andrew have been engaged for a while now and you love every second of your life with him. From watching him perform at festivals or just baking together in the kitchen of the house both of you own. He was on tour in United States and with you being from the states you decided to go along with him. One of the shows was not far way from your parents house and your hometown. You talked to your parents before had about staying just for the night and they weren’t reluctant to let y’all in. The day had gone great and the concert was even better. It was around 11 pm when everyone said goodnight and when to their own rooms. You and Andrew shared your old room together, while laying in your oversized childhood bed you started thinking about how your father would take you out each morning to the country to see the stars. “Hey Andy?” You said while rolling over to look at him. “Yea?” His thick Irish accent made your heart flutter. “I was thinking. Me and my dad always used to go out to the country and stargaze or just drive. There are some really beautiful things out there. Would you like if I took you tomorrow morning?” He opened his eyes and looked at you smiling. “Sure. I would love to, honey.” He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer to him. “Oh awesome! It will be a little early, but it’s definitely worth it.” You could help but smile. “I’m sure it will be worth it, darling.” He buried his head the crease of your neck and whispers “I’ll see you in the morning, my love. I’m excited.” You felt his breathing on you neck and as he said that you couldn’t help but smile. “I’ll see you in the morning.” You whispered back at him. You set your alarm and went straight to sleep. The alarm woke you up at exactly 5 AM. You gently rubbed Andrew’s back trying to gently wake him up. After a good couple of minutes he finally woke up, y’all got dressed and ready of the day. While you were waiting on Andrew to get dressed (because he was having an outfit crisis) you made and pour you both coffee. Finally he settled on just sweatpants and the sweater you bought him. Handing him a cup of coffee, the both of y’all left the house quietly. Getting the car he rented you in the drivers seat and him in the passengers, y’all headed off into the woods. While driving you connected your phone to the car stereo, you decided to turn on some of Noah Kahan’s music instead of torturing him with his own music. Y’all were getting deeper and deeper into the woods, he turns a looks at you. “Do you have a plan to kill me?” He ask with a grin. “Hell no! Why would I?!” You responded a little confused. “I guess watch that horror film last night got me edge…” He said in responses. “Well I promise I’m not going to kill you.” After a while of driving and singing long with the song she pulled over to a little trail, you parked the car and they both got out. “Look up, love.” He looked up at the sky, the full moon also setting and the stars bright than ever. The music in the car was still playing, this time it was one of his song and your personal favorite song of his ‘Abstract (Psychopomp)’. “The earth from a distance, see how it shines~” Andrew laughed at his own lyrics, “The earth does indeed shine, well technically the solar system shines.” You looked away from the sky and looked at him, his eyes glistening with the stars light. He was everything to her. “It does really shine.” She wasn’t even paying attention to the stars now, she was only paying attention to him. “I love you, Hoziy” You sipped your hand into his pocket and held his hand, and rested your head on his shoulder. “I love you too, my star.”

The Benefits of Solar Window Film Installations for Your Car
In today’s world, where sustainability and comfort are key concerns for car owners, Solar Window Film Installations in Car is becoming increasingly popular. These films are more than just a luxury; they offer practical benefits that enhance your driving experience while protecting your vehicle and its occupants.
What is Solar Window Film?
Solar window film is a thin, multi-layered material applied to the interior side of your car’s windows. It’s designed to block a significant portion of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, reduce glare, and control heat. This makes it an excellent addition for anyone looking to improve their vehicle's comfort, safety, and energy efficiency.
Key Benefits of Solar Window Film
Heat Reduction:
Solar window films can block up to 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays and reduce heat inside the car by up to 60%. This means your car stays cooler even on the hottest days, reducing the need for excessive air conditioning and, in turn, improving fuel efficiency.
Enhanced Privacy:
The tinted nature of solar window films offers increased privacy by making it harder for outsiders to see inside your car. This added layer of privacy can deter potential thieves and give you peace of mind.
Interior Protection:
Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause your car’s interior to fade and deteriorate over time. Solar window film acts as a protective barrier, preserving the color and quality of your seats, dashboard, and other interior components.
Glare Reduction:
Solar window films significantly reduce glare from the sun and headlights, making driving safer and more comfortable, especially during sunrise, sunset, or nighttime.
Conclusion
Investing in solar window film for your car is a smart decision that offers multiple benefits—from protecting your vehicle’s interior to enhancing your driving comfort. Whether you’re looking to beat the heat, reduce glare, or simply add an extra layer of privacy, Solar Window Film Installations in Car is a practical and cost-effective solution.
