Speaking out against the bullying was difficult and I tried. If I said something I immediately got accused of supporting an abuser. The poor guy was found guilty by everyone under the sun and there was no stopping the hate train. But even before the Maya stuff the bullying over his dancing at Nialls show was so bad too. It genuinely surprised me how hateful people were. And actually really stupid if I'm honest because they just blindly followed what everyone was saying. I'm still so upset over how he was treated by everyone and I only saw a couple of people express regret by what they said about him. Most just deleted their videos or tweets and pretended it didn't happen.

I guess my main issue with this book is how the fandom has reacted to it. It's given people a sort of God complex on both sides.

If you criticize the Covey or Lenore Dove, you're misogynistic and racist.

If you like the book, you support character assassination

If you dislike the book, you didn't understand the message.

It's more tame on Tumblr (thankfully) but it makes for such a negative fandom experience. It's literally just a book. A book of a cleverly crafted series, yes, but a fictional book nonetheless.

As a tumblr veteran, this has been pretty much any fandom ever. As a THG veteran, this has been the THG fandom.

I've been pretty vocal about disliking Ballad, I've been vocal about my headcanons, I've been vocal about what I don't like about the trilogy. I know if I turn around people will directly, indirectly, consciously, unconsciously refer to points I've made either because they read them or they spread the internet far and wide enough that they sound like a "majority opinion" (looking at you, reddit pretending that "Caesar is a rebel" is a popular theory).

There will always be extreme, chronically online people who have nothing better to do than to pretend you are an illiterate dummy for having an opinion different to theirs, but quite frankly online discourse has been toxic since I've been in the English speaking fandom part of the internet, and all you can truly do is block and move on. Or, on the rainy days, pack out the popcorn and read some parody.

It's the boring mature answer to all of this, but it's the healthiest approach.
