Weekends are too short
Last week felt long... most working weeks feel overly long and equally not long enough to fit all of the work tasks into a standard 38-40 hour week. Even when working late is common in my line of work, there's still never enough time to do everything.
The expectations from middle and upper management are beyond unrealistic and we are constantly gaslit with insane comments like "oh perhaps you need to work on improving your time management".
How about "f*ck off" stop being an asshat and advocate to hire more staff so that work loads are not so unrealistic! Also advocate for the rights and wellbeing of staff within professional networks and stakeholders to improve working relationships, reduce the external pressure on staff and improve worker morale by ensuring workers feel supported in their work!
I work in an industry that is notorious for high staff turn over, worker burnout, work place bullying, overworked and under paid etc.
Why do it you may ask... well its kind of a caring profession and most people don't do this type of work for the money or the glory. Most, like myself are empathetic, passionate about helping, caring, supporting others, especially those who are more... vulnerable. So a lot of the 'reward' for the work is more about a self-identified sense of fulfilment... its work that requires a lot of empathy and compassion, but also objectivity, its fast paced, and diverse. And thankfully, I don't have to sit in an office staring at a computer all day every day, I get to move about, go in and out of the office and meet all sorts of people. Sometimes I like the diversity, other times I find it challenging when I'm low in energy and my introvert kicks in and I just want to hibernate.
I have done various jobs, from hospitality to office work and various odds and ends in between throughout my life. But the profession I work in now and have done for more than 10 years suits me.
Its a constant challenge, always something new to learn and its rewarding, most of the time, and yes, it can also very draining.
I have been doing this type or work for a long time. I used to absolutely love it and while I dont hate it, these last few years have personally been really bloody hard and have led me into an introspective space, questioning so much about myself and life, and about my work.
No decisions made yet though.
Im not willing or ready to give up or change my work, but I sense its on the horizon. I have some ideas, but the time isn't right. For now, the stability is important as I create balance and recover from the last few difficult years.
So yeah, weekends feel way too short after long busy work weeks. Especially when you save up all your personal tasks and errands for the weekend. I often find I get to Sunday afternoon and feel frustrated that A) I havent had enough time to myself to rest and relax. And B) I haven't had enough time to do all of things I needed or wanted to do. whether that be the groceries, gardening, house work, seeing friends, go to a market/festival/show/movie or whatever.
Its ironic that we have been so conditioned to work our arses off for someone else for 40 or more hours a week, add in travel time to /from work that reduces our personal time even more, to then get basically 24 hours (because sleep is important) to do all the fun and necessary stuff on the weekends.
It doesn't make sense to me anymore.
The older I get, the more I question everything about life, about the structures and systems we live in. How we have been conditioned to put work above all else. Amd im very aware that many dont have the privilege to make such choices. While many people are also bogged down in debt so again, we don't get the option to chase dreams, follow our passions take a decent amount of time out to rest and recuperate.
Our nervous systems are over stimulated, everything seems increasingly on hyper-drive. Many people are much less happier, over stressed, over worked.
I sit back and look at life now, what it was like when I was a kid compared to what we thought life would be like in 2025.. we thought it would be more like Back to the Future than what we actually have.
Its a weird juxtaposition to be in.
I don't know where I was going with this ramble except to say that I hope one day soon to have a more balanced life.
I hope many many more people start or continue to challenge the unhealthy, unrealistic, and unnatural social conditioning that has become status quo for many. Where we can push back or swap out working tirelessly to fill the coffers of the already rich and spend more time with ourselves and our loved ones, enjoying the simplicities of life.
Of the many things I've learnt about myself and the challenges I've faced the last few years is that my physical and mental health is not worth the risk.
Even if you have good relationships with the people you work with or for, 99% of organisation see employees are replaceable.
Many workforces are currently being replaced by AI, computers, robots, surveillance and self-service.
Be aware, be curious, question what you're being told, where is the information is coming from and why.... look at things objectively from various angles.
