These two human beings are using their power and privilege to speak out against something that I think we minimize as a 'real problem' - the harmful ways we treat each other online. I'm not sure we fully understand the devastation and profound harm that comes from being front and centre in the public eye. I have heard my peers say being in the public eye means just take the abuse and shut up, especially if you’re wealthy and beautiful. But how many of us have had to live with the level of scrutiny and threat that comes from online?

How many of us have had pornographic images of our body photoshopped and sent to us in an effort to degrade us? How many of us have to navigate rape threats on a regular basis? How many of us have to tolerate regular threats of kidnapping and murder? How many of us have to endure racist abuse and daily taunts of your unworthiness due to your sexuality or gender? We minimize these messages and say that’s in the minority, but how many of you have threats from someone who says they will kill you, your boyfriend, your mother, or your children, just because they are connected to you? Even one message would keep me up at night, but what if you get 100s on a regular basis? Harry is right…it just takes 1 bad actor…

I don’t want to be a fan who contributes to the objectification and dehumanization of my favourite public figure in any way. So I'm watching and learning.

THATS WHAT I THOUGHT. ITS THE EXACT SAME REASON WE HAVE SO MANY BATSHIT RIGHT WING PEOPLE. THEY ARE BEING INCUBATED IN THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA ECHO CHAMBERS.

It seems like Pro-Palestinians will listen to anyone except for Palestinian peace activists. It seems like “anti-Zionists-not-antisemites” will listen to anyone except for Jews and the preeminent scholars on antisemitism. It seems like supporters of Iran and Yemen will listen to anyone except victims of the Islamic Republic or Hezbollah.

It’s seriously giving Trump campaign rally. You can show people a tweet that says “Israel is stealing the organs of Palestinian babies” and they’ll believe it wholeheartedly. And then you can show them Snopes debunking it. You can show them that tweet came from a neo-Nazi. And you can show them a video from a prominent Palestinian activist saying “Hey please don’t believe antisemitic conspiracy theories, it actively hurts our movement”. But you won’t change their mind.

A story from February:

Proof that false claims hurt genuine victims and that the worst aspects of social media encourage grifting.

Maddie Russo, from Iowa, went on TikTok to falsely claim that she had contracted pancreatic cancer. She was interviewed by a local journalist (who never cross-checked her key claims), received money from a cancer foundation, and clocked up over $37 000 in donations via GoFundMe.

It's a sad irony that a local journalist could not see through her fraud, but observant medical professionals noticed key discrepancies from her claims and images, and it's thanks to them that Russo was finally arrested and her grift shut down. She is due to be tried in September this year for theft.

I can only imagine what real cancer survivors in desperate need of treatment must have felt seeing this worthless liar appopriate their tremendous suffering for personal financial gain. Russo went so far as to pose with medical equipment, allegedly from her own apartment, as well as claiming to speak on cancer-related topics to other audiences-- something the local journalist never bothered to check.

As a result, those genuinely suffering from cancer are now having to rebuild trust with donors, even though one might assume that most people who ask for donations are honest. Yet an expert cited in this article notes that many financial scams aren't reported, not least because donors feel embarrassed to admit they lost money.

Another bigger problem is the worst aspects of social media. Having seen and read about some of the worst cultural trends being birthed from TikTok, it's hardly a surprise to find scammers like Maddie Russo operating from here. The craving for attention that platforms such as TikTok foster go well with those so self-obsessed that they are willing to use other people's pain for content.

Ultimately, it is everybody's responsibility to do due diligence when dealing with serious claims. Follow the police: assume nothing, believe nobody, and for the love of God, check everything before you print!

there’s something extremely extremely creepy about taking an actor that you have known since they were 13 years old, only JUST a teenager, and making them kiss a fully grown woman the second that they turned a legal adult.

Steve Blackman already has a ton of shit out against him which came out recently so it unfortunately doesn’t surprise me that he would write something like this but it makes me genuinely concerned for everything behind the scenes.

There has been a HUGE problem in the Umbrella Academy fandom since season ONE when Aidan was a 13-14 year old of people writing insanely disgusting stuff and defending it because his character was mentally an adult but oh my god did they make it worse. You’d think they’d protect actor & character by avoiding any romantic interaction but instead you have him kiss an actress 15 years older than him. The age gap being the age that he was when they filmed season two. Quite honestly I feel that if he could’ve done this seasons previously and gotten away with it then he definitely would’ve done it, given the jokes that are actively made.

Quite honestly may Steve Blackman never work again if this is how he treats his actors because this is awful. I’m not even done with the season but that gave me very little desire to continue and this show has been important to me in ways I can’t explain. Maybe I am blowing this out of proportion but it feels so insanely creepy and horrific to me and I needed to rant.

What ppl don’t say about being intelligent or multitalented is that you have to hide your skills so others don’t feel insulted, humiliated, or feel like you’re making fun of them for not having the same abilities as you, human beings like to compete between them, and if they find someone who excels at something, the first thought they’ll have is to find a way to exclude that person, so the talented in question doesn’t “steal” the attention from them, so they can be recognized, they’ll find a way to ridicule the “talented one” so others will believe it’s not that brilliant, humans work by ego, and ego also destroys them, destroys the society, and nowadays society is based in capitalism, the capitalism needs this type of behavior to keep humans away from each other, so they don’t work together to destroy it, so humans will always be slaves ‘cause they’re addicted to recognition and instant gratification and individualism will always be attacked ‘cause it’s a form of freedom, and there’s nothing big companies and their bosses hate more than freedom and a mind clear from poison, so if you’re intelligent, talented, whatever word you want to use for it, don’t make yourself little just because everyone laughs at you, if you have an idea that seems crazy for this world, it’s because this world is rotten, not because you’re wrong, keep being free

What a half assed apology compared to this too. Just a singular ‘sorry’?? What if I hadn’t been someone that had made the decision to never again attempt? Would you deliver that same ‘sorry’ to my friends and family? If I had taken your cruelty as my final reason to stop trying? It’s one thing when ur fucking joking or some shit, it’s another to do what you did to someone you KNOW is already struggling with mental health. I’ve never known one person in my life that’s had a breakdown and attempted to suicide bait someone over it. You are a cruel person and you need to get help to stop your behavior now before it’s too fucking late. But you will never find forgiveness from me. You’ll just have to live with that. You need to get help now. I rarely ever suggest this bc it’s similarly traumatic, but if you genuinely can’t control that, you may need to think about calling the hospital. Admit yourself and stay there until you’re out of the danger zone. Just never fucking do this again.
