This is a great post. I want to add some of my own thoughts, too, if that's cool.

I think in order to be successful at being an independent artist promoting yourself it's important to maintain your excitement for making art. Social media can destroy your relationship with art-making, and you need to be aware of how it affects you so you can engage with it in a sustainable, healthy way.

When I first started my business, I wrote a business model where one of my "strategies" was to make fanart. Fanart gets circulated widely and is engaged with a lot online, so artists will sometimes strategically do it to get numbers and eyeballs on their other work. But I learned that making fanart (and even commissions, anything with rigid guidelines) killed my artistic drive. My art-making comes from a desire to explore and play, and following "rules" (character has to look X way) snuffs my flame. So I ditched it. The art always comes first. Would my work gain traction if I painted some Pokemon? Probably! But is it worth the pain in the ass to steer myself in that direction? No! That's how you get burnout!

My strategy has been to make authentic art, keep myself excited to make art, and make it a lot. To hell with trends and algorithms -- engage with them as much as you can tolerate. Sure I'll do a funny meme now and again or make a topical joke-- I'm part of this online community, too. But my main focus is always on the art. Sacrificing your relationship to your work is not worth the momentary vitality you might achieve, even if it comes with new collectors and followers. Those mean nothing if you're too disenchanted or burnt out to make more art.

You’re looking for that viral moment so it opens up the door and you can do the thing full time. But you start to compromise just to get the door to open: guessing what it wants, debasing yourself, alienating yourself. Until you’re not even in service to your art anymore. You’re in service to the algorithm. Deep down every artist just wants to be seen. Everyone does. And that’s how it controls you. The algorithm makes you behave in a certain way, create in a certain way, in exchange for being seen. And if something can change what you do, it can change who you are. And I didn’t sign up for that. I didn’t sign up to become a content creator. Art was supposed to be a way for me to be in search of, in service to, in community with. It was my ministry. Art was supposed to be my ministry.”
