Nintendo-vember Level 2: Howard and Nester: How you are not supposed to pay tribute to a comic
Ahhhh, Nintendo Power. Published by Nintendo of America from 1988 till August of 2012, this magazine was part of the childhood of many Nintendo fans. A magazine that functioned as a gaming guide, advertisement for new games and just fun overall for people enthusiastic for Nintendo.
While we did not have Nintendo Power like that where I am from, we had a similar magazine called âClub Nintendoâ, which ran from the 90s up till the early 2000s (2002 to be precise), after which it unfortunately got unceremoniously canceled. I had access to these issues thanks to relatives who enjoyed them a lot and honestly, I enjoyed them too. Very informative, highlighting many games and filled with some really fun comic stories here and there.
Now, Club Nintendo wasnât entirely like Nintendo Power though. For example, among our comics in the magazine we did not have the subject of todayâs post: Howard and Nester.
Now for those unaware who they are, a short explanation: Howard and Nester were the characters of a short series of comic strips from the very early days of Nintendo Power. Howard was an adult business man with a bow tie that Matt Smith may like, while Nester was a ten to eleven year old redhead NES player. In other words, he was a little shit.
Howard himself btw was based on Howard Phillips, initially a warehouse manager for Nintendo of America, who at a very young age (he was only in his 20s when he started working for Nintendo) joined the company and would play a major role in the marketing of the NES launch in America. He was also an avid videogamer of the âolden timesâ so to speak and was Nintendo of Americaâs spokesperson number uno. Liked by many within the industry, he did however eventually leave Nintendo in 1991 (at only 32 years old), to pursue careers in other companies. Which did not work out quite as well, according to Wikipedia. Though he is still hanging around, kicking, playing and working in the industry, for some german firm no one really knows about.
Man, he even looks kinda like the eleventh Doctor.
Anyway, back to the comic itself: The comic strips were essentially just meant as short, two page fillers ad would feature the caricature of Howard Phillips and Nester, the later supposed to represent Nintendo fanboys, finding themselves in environments related to a current videogame and dealing with whatever situation. Most of the time just ending in some comedic pratfall for a rather impatient Nester to suffer.
Then, after 25 strips, Howard, in relation to Howard Phillips leaving Nintendo, also left the comic, resulting in the thing ending and Nester going on some mini adventures on his own.
Now honestly, reading those strips I donât think they are really bad. Howard as a character is rather supportive, there are small hints to games they thematically integrate in the comics here and there and some of the scenarios are kinda fun. Plus even the linework is okay for this sort of comic.
However, I genuinely think that Nester is a little bit of a shit. Especially in his first two strips.
He just comes off as smug and a bit of a know it all. Believing he is better than Howard, not grateful for any advice and trying to come off like he is an expert in the eyes of younger, impressionable kids.
Oh god, he is Dobson!
Though that may be what adds to the pratfalls he suffers then. In addition, I am a bit baffled by what games they supposedly star in or how some of the games they talk about are executed in comic.
I mean, the Ducktales comic for example has nothing to do with Ducktales really aside of the moon duck enemy thing kinda being in it (though that may have been related to Disney telling them not to use Scrooge)âŠ
And then there is the fact, that a comic based on the Golgo 13 game was made.
You know, THE Golgo 13? The game based on the famous manga about an assassin for hire?
I mean, what next? A comic based on them in the setting of Home Sweet Home? Though that may have been cool.
It is just, I can see how the duo left some impression on early readers, but I canât see how they could get quite the appeal, that back in 2008 Nintendo Power would release THIS comic, featuring a now adult Nester talking to his son about the good old days. A little manga-esque like tribute, some people enjoyed.
Not so much You know who though, who decided to draw instead THIS comic in order to âhonorâ the two and the style of the comic. And in doing so just ended up showing that he kinda never understood the character of Nester, nor the concept behind the original tribute in the first place.
So, why does the comic suck? Because it is just an excuse for Dobson to project his own shitty opinion about how Nintendo âdishonoredâ the origins of the characters he claims to love onto Nester. All while making also both characters accidentally come off as losers and creepy. Particularly Howard comes off as horrible in the comic. After all, based on the set up established via the first two panels, I can only assume that the guy kidnapped a ten year old boy against his will and put him into cryostasis. Separating him from his family and friends, only to thaw him up again twenty years later. And for what? To show him how far games have come since then?
I get that the comic is supposed to be a joke (though I see nothing in it that makes me laugh), but⊠well..
For that set up is rather unfortunate and feels more like it should be part of some existential horror story about someone finding themselves completely displaced in time and seeing, how their disappearance tore apart their loved ones. I for one rather ask myself, what happened to Nesterâs parents? Were they accused of killing their son and send to prison? Did they commit suicide? Did Howard just kill them to get to Nester in the first place?
And the âmotivationâ to freeze him -I want to show you how games are played in the future- is just⊠that doesnât even feel like a plan. I am genuinely at loss for words to explain the âlogicâ that Howard must have had and how none of that helps âthe jokeâ.
Like look, the idea that Howard would e.g. pull out some magic item or machine to show Nester how in the future games are played and giving him a bit of a cultural shock only to return back to the present, feels like a set up that could have worked. But this is not the set up of this comic. This comic has Howard use an extreme measurement to achieve his goal, that comes just off as psychotic.
But hey, why bother elaborating on the ramifications of Howard having tortured a child like that (which feels like a great disservice to the real Howard Phillips), when there are games to play.
Or rather, complain about, because that is the only thing Nester does, starting from his shock at seeing Link now having blond hair.
Which is stupid as shit. I am sorry, but considering the kid had been on ice since the late 80s according to this comic, I think his first reaction to seeing game graphics from around 2008 would be âholy shitâ as a result of a cultural shock. Not the fact that Link now has blond hair.
Also, way to prove how Nester is only a phony Nintendo fanboy, because he calls Pit by the name of Kid Icarus
See, little trivia bit here: The tendency of calling little Pit (btw, one of my favorite characters in the Nintendo canon ever since I played Uprising. I love that little shota) Kid Icarus, came mostly because of the awful Captain N: The Game Master cartoon from 1989, which named him by his game title. All while the game was a stable of the NES library since 1987 and Pitâs name was a stable in its freaking manual
Look for yourself: Page 7.
Also, getting riled up over Mario not being from Brooklyn when that was NEVER a point in the actual games anyway or Linkâs hair color?
Hm, doesnât that sound familiarâŠ
Look, I am not much a fan of Nester based on the strips I saw, but it would be obvious even to Helen Keller, that Nester here is not himself. He is a stand in for Dobson and his shitty opinions on how Nintendo âbetrayedâ the old NES fans by making Mario and Co more marketable and ignore their âtrue and honestâ origins. The ârealâ Nester based on the strips comes off to me more like someone who would freaking geek out at seeing his favorite game characters being these detailed, cartoony badasses fighting equally great villains.
After all, playing as Link who can ride on a horse and fights a giant sized pig demon? Mario throwing planets at Bowser? Mario and Link duking it out with other heroes? Seeing Pit and Palutena in Smash Bros Brawl? Which btw came out in January of 2008, so Nester complaining about not seeing Pit- oh I am sorry âKid Icarusâ would be inaccurate too.
The point I am trying to make is, that if you grew up with the bare minimum presentation some NES games had, you would be gushing over anything âmodernâ
Heck, considering the sort of stuff Nester played or was into in the comics, he would likely drop the Wii once he learnt about stuff like God of War, Ratchet and Clank and other âbadassâ and âcoolâ games other consoles can offer.
But no. Nester is simply overwhelmed with the concept of 3D and ârealismâ. Though lets be real here, I think realism in videogames is an oxymoron, independent of what console we talk about. I mean, what is e.g. ârealisticâ about Mario, Sonic, God of War, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil etc? I know at least half a class of biologists who cry each time a new Resident Evil scientist comes off with a new variant of the virus.
Anyway, he is so overwhelmed, he simply just wants to go back to the old days and the game he used (or rather âuseâ. Btw, great job at even failing at simple past tense) to play.
Only loving the Nintendo Wii once Nester tells him about the online shop and that he can play on it the same shlock he already likely has memorized before Howard put him into cryostasis and as such deprived him of a proper childhood.
Meaning that Howards âplanâ to show Nester the future of gaming failed, because instead of embracing the new while also loving the old, he simply rejects the former and embraces the later even more tightly, putting it on a pedestal the same way Dobson does.
Which frankly, is one of the aspects I find the most annoying about Dobson in general when it comes to Nintendo. I get it. He grew up with the NES and I admit, the console had some really great games that build the corner stones of many franchises and the Nintendo empire.
But, and you can crucify me for saying that, by modern day standards (or heck, even standards set up by the follow up console, the SNES) the NES era was kinda bad and many games, even a lot of the classics, canât stand the test of time as much anymore than they once did.
Before you burn me on the stake, let me explain: I myself grew up with the SNES and GameBoy as my first consoles, so I never played the NES games, even though I was aware of them through Club Nintendo. Only in recent years, thanks to the NES mini and some game collections I downloaded on the PS4, I got to play some of the classic games. And frankly, I think a lot of them suck in some regard. Like the technical limitations of the time, the at times unfair programming to make certain games extra hard and how quick you can actually get through the game once you know what to do, make some games a bit of an underwhelming experience.
Granted, unlike Dobson I will admit, that my opinion is very biased. Coming from my own love of the SNES, as well as decades of playing other games too, including sequels to many of these starter games that managed to polish up things in term of gameplay and presentation. And there is no denying, that there have still been many great games on the console by Nintendo itself, but also third party publishers such as Capcom, Squaresoft, Enix or Konami.
Kirby, Mario Bros 3, Megaman 3 up to 6, Ducktales, Castlevania 3, Contra, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Earthbound are at least some titles that come to my mind.
But it was also the console that gave us stuff like the LJN published videogames, got a shit ton of unnecessary equipment like the Power Glove, established the term âNintendo Hardâ and frankly, I find myself unable to genuinely play the NES Zelda games or Kid Icarus without feeling them quite underwhelming and a bit flawed. So bottom line, I think it was important, I think good stuff came out of it, but it was only the first steps into the right direction. The NES learnt how to walk, so the Switch could run.
Dobson meanwhile worships the era like it was the greatest thing ever, never topped and shoves his opinion into Nesterâs mouth. Resulting in the stripâs entire message boiling down essentially to the following:
The past was greater than what we have now and is the only thing I love. Oh, and fuck you for making me try new things.
Which is ironic, coming from the person who among other things would claim that such a behavior is toxic years later. Going onto rants how Kylo Ren is such a nostalgic nerd and criticism of âtoxic fansâ when he ranted about Star Wars â The Last Jedi and that critics of it are all Nazis. Even though Kylo is the one saying âlet the past dieâ.
youtube
There is also just the fact, that the comic obviously misses the idea behind the original Howard and Nester tribute comic from Nintendo Power.
Like sure, the comic in the magazine was flawed. The manga inspired art work wasnât that great and Nester felt like he grew up into the sort of young adult who made videos on youtube in the late 2008s, trying to emulate the AVGN by reviewing old NES games and acting like he is hardcore for enjoying âThe Wizardâ. All while being in reality more of a dork, especially in the eyes of a son that actually comes off as way older than he likely should be if Nester is only in his late twenties or early thirties.
But I think that was kind of the point. Making Nester more a caricature of the âgaming nerdâ of the time period, while also indirectly playing a decent tribute to the old days and showing Nester having gotten older, though not necessarily wiser. But considering his kid seems to be doing okay, I doubt he is that terrible of a dad.
Which begs the question though, what is it about the comic that pissed Dobson off that much? The âmangaâ style? Granted, I think they could have gone more with a style akin to what the original comics had, which is the only thing Dobson has going for his page, that I can actually appreciate. But it could have been worse.
Is it the idea of Nester actually changing as a person, growing up? I mean, considering how allergic Dobson was often times to the idea of change (except when it was related to dumb reboots that may piss off republican strawmen in his head), I could actually believe that.
But if that was what pissed him off and his idea was to make a comic doing a tribute to these two the âright wayâ, Dobson failed miserably. Because all he did was make Howard come off like a psychopath for freezing up a kid to show him some games and Nester like a moron who canât appreciate positive change in the media he consumes. All because Dobson was rather focused to vent his own frustration about Nintendo through their mouths, rather than respectfully draw a story with them. Something he even admitted
The artwork may be decent here, but the writing is a failed assignment.
The most ridiculous thing about that being, that either some time later or before, Dobson made a way better comic starring NEster, that actually gets the vibe of the original
And before someone claims I can only complain and not bring some alternative to the table how to execute the comic, here is what I may have done:
Start the comic as Howard and Nester in the Back to The Future NES game, supposedly having just finished it. Only for Nester to end up playing with the controls of the DeLorean and in doing so transporting him and Howard into the future. Materializing in 2008, they then learn about the actual positive things happening to videogames ever since , though Howard may also learn to some degree about the bad stuff whe he reads up an article titled âRise and Fall of videogamesâ or something related to Jack Thompson). Have Nester for example geek out about Smash Bros, question what a Pikachu is, hitting himself in the head accidentally with a Wii Remote, but overall try to also give a positive message to it all.
Like Nester befriending bunch of kids via Wii playing. The comic then ending with the two travelling back to 1988, Nester all pumped up about the prospect how great videogames will turn out in the future -perhaps also being a bit impatient at the prospect to wait 20 years to play Smash Bros Brawl again- while Howard muses about the things yet to come. The final panel perhaps being set in 2008 with an older Nester looking over a little brother who befriended by accident his younger self, challenging the younger one to a rematch he had âlostâ in the past.
I know, sounds corny as fuck, but it at least would nullify the entire âI kidnapped you and froze you upâ implications of the original comic by Dobson.
Now, unlike Dobson, I do not intend to leave a bitter taste in the mouth of the readers, so I want to end this post on a sweeter note by informing you about the following:
When Nintendo Power eventually ended on issue 285 in December of 2012, someone at the editorial team must have remembered Howard and Nester, because they decided to have this little two page comic in it.
Nester, drawn in the classic style, as a way more well adjusted adult than in the 2008 comic, reminiscing about the magazine that he owes his existence and had brought him many hours of joy. His son helping him accept that it may be over for the magazine, but that the enjoyment will never 100% go away. Even adding a little framed bow tie in the background of the last panel, symbolizing that in hindsight Nester likely came to appreciate Howard as more than just an annoying mentor sort of figure. All before heading out to play a new Mario game with his son. Leaving the past behind but close, while embracing the future.
A comic, that in my opinion hits on the sweet âbittersweetâ spot of such things as Fullmetal Alchemist or Amphibia. Giving the âstoryâ a proper wrap up and assuring people that it is over, but that the characters themselves in a way are -unlike Dobbear- never gone.
And if you want to read all the strips of Howard and NEster, here is a link to the archive I found for this post.
Level 2 is done. Time for some bonus round and then the next level soon. Cause now we are really going deep into his whinning over the superiority of the old Nintendo canon

after tkm the perception of andrew becomes so reliant on his personality through neil's love-tinted eyes, and there's such little about betsy that we know because neil avoids her like the plague. and then you get her pov.
you get her pov at one of the most damaging points in the series. and andrew minyard, in the middle of it all, still trying so hard to be seen as strong and unaffected, trying to look past all of it, and his mother, the truest, realest one he'll ever have, tells him: listen to me. i am proud of you.
and for a moment this indeterminably strong character is just a boy. he's just a twenty-ish year old boy looking at his mother, upset and possibly even afraid, before saying: everyone knows now, bee.

You know i love adoptive bee, but its always this what if scenario and the twins are adopted when they are still little. And donât get me wrong i love fics and fanart like that but you know what i REALLY want? Bee adopting andrew just before he graduates college!
Like she wont be his therapist anymore and maybe he is struggling with the fact that he wont see her much if at all after all if he is not her client then why keep in contact?
So yeah i want bee to hand him the papers in one of their last sessions telling him how much he means to her and that regardless wether its âofficialâ or not she will always be just a call away and its entirely up to him of course! And i need andrew to have a mega existential crisis about it because its a big deal and heâll talk to neil about it and maybe even aaron and then he says yes because its bee and he gets to have things like this now good things! that wonât cost him the world do you get it!!!
#ugh im sick thinking about this#and i just imagine years down the line andrew visiting bee theyâre in the grocery store when someone walks up#and they say oh bee long time no see and this must be your son ive heard so much about you!#and andrew gets to now what its like to have a very proud and loving mother because he deserves iiiiiittttt!!!!!!!#andrew minyard#aftg andrew#betsy dobson#all for the game#aftg

Personally, I think Andrew would really like the song "I Sent My Therapist To Therapy" by Alec Benjamin. I think he would find it super amusing. He plays it for Neil one day and asks him if he ghostwrote it. Neil isn't amused. He then plays it for Bee one day in therapy, and she finds it much more amusing, though he finds the following questions and analysis of why he finds it relatable were less so. Secretly, though, Bee is just happy that Andrew found something that he liked enough that he cared to share it.
#alec benjamin is amazing#go listen to his songs if you havent#bee is happy that andrew is finding joy (or at least amusement) in things#even more so that he's willing to share them#neil is happy about that too but doesnt appreciate part of the amusement being at his expense (and also therapy lol)#andrew definitely relates to the song in an almost self-deprecating kind of way (not that he'd ever admit it to anyone maybe other than bee)#but he also thinks it's funny with regards to neil#aftg#all for the game#andrew minyard#neil josten#andreil#betsy dobson#bee dobson

The King's Men - Chapter Twelve
Day: Friday, March 8th / 9th* Time: 12:30 PM EST
Neil doesn't understand, so he lets it slide. "Is it exhausting seeing everything as a fight?" "Not as exhausting as running from everything must be." "Maybe," Neil allows. "I told you I'm working on that." "Work harder." "I can't unless you let me go," Neil says, quiet but firm. "Stand with me, but don't fight for me. Let me learn to fight for myself." "You never explained that change of heart." "Maybe I got tired of seeing Kevin bend. Or maybe it was the zombies." When Andrew just stares at him, Neil shrugs and says, "A few weeks back you and Renee argued contingency plans for a zombie apocalypse. She said she'd focus on survivors. You said you'd go back for some of us. Five of us," Neil says, splaying his fingers at Andrew. "You weren't counting Abby or Coach. Since you trust Renee to handle the rest of the team, I'm guessing the last spot is for Dobson." He knows Andrew won't answer that, so he drops his hand and says, "I didn't say anything then because I knew I'd look out for only me when the world went to hell. I don't want to be that person anymore. I want to go back for you." "You wouldn't," Andrew says. "You're a different kind of suicidal. Didn't you figure that out in December? You're bait. You're the martyr no one asked for or wanted." Neil knows he isn't that good of a person, but all he says is, "Only one way to be sure, right?" "You'll regret it." "Maybe, maybe not." Andrew looks away. "Don't come crying to me when someone breaks your face." "Thank you."

In my head, "Mama Bee" can never happen so long as she is actively his therapist. She's too good of a therapist to risk crossing those sorts of lines, and with CPTSD, those lines are extra important.
HOWEVER
When Andrew graduates, she is no longer his therapist. And I bet you, once he graduates and meets Bee after the ceremony, he brings this up in his own way. "You don't have to deal with me now," he probably says.
And you know what? Bee probably smiles the way she does over a mug of hot chocolate and says something like, "I was never 'dealing'." Cue some stilted circumnavigation around the subtext until Bee says, "I may no longer be your therapist, Andrew. But you still have my number. And I will still answer."
And so, just to see if the Enigma that is Bee will still hold up to time, he does. Once a month, maybe. And she answers, every time.
And once a month becomes a little more. And eventually Skype calls become a thing. Every Fox reunion has Andrew making his way towards Bee before anyone else.
He calls her when they adopt Sir and King. He calls her when he and Neil get hitched. He calls her when they buy their first home ( Wymack was who he called for house hunting help).
He yells at her when she has that heart attack.
He runs her first marathon with her.
And that's how Bee the therapist slowly becomes Mama Bee (but no one ever calls her that. Andrew won't even let himself think it. But even Neil seems to smile whenever Andrew willfully picks up the phone to rant to Betsy Dobson about the mundanities of life, just because he can. Just because he still has her number. And just because she will still answer.)

Today in Jean and Neil's bestfrienderism. With a side of Andrew being Andrew. And domestic Andreil.
.
Jean is having a panic attack.
Well, not quite. It's not a full blown attack, yet. But it is close. Very, very close. He is thirty. He is alive. He is Jean Moreau and he has endured so, so much. He is, somewhat, free. As free as the cattle are in a pasture. As free as the shrimp are to the breeding pond.
He has a wonderful husband. He is reconnecting with Kevin. He visits Cat and Laila whenever their schedules allow them the time to do so. He has a dog â well, he technically has three. Charbon is his, and his alone. She is a wonderful Black Labrador that Dobson appointed him. The other two, Caramelo and Dulce, (both named by Catalina, of course) are his and his husband's.
Charbon is moving as soon as he's clawing at his neck. She knows what to do. She knows what to do.
"-breathe. In, and out. Com'on, Jean. It ain't hard. In, and out. You're, like, an athlete. In, and out. You don't even smoke. In, and out. Drew? Water, yes. In, and out."
That's, unfortunately, not the voice of a cybernetically enhanced service dog. It's a different type of animal. Neil Josten.
He manages to make his brain claw around, trying to find where his hand is (in his neck, of course) and puts it up, flipping the bipedal cockroach off.
.
Jean doesn't have a panic attack. Thanks, Charbon.
He's still on the edge. He plays with the dog's ears, floppy and bendy. She seems content to let him do so. They're all on the floor. The two cats are in Neil's lap. Andrew is in the kitchen.
"Breathing okay? Didn't break a rib, did you?"
Jean flips Neil off again.
"I take that as a no. But we did do a RCP training course, you know? Aaron was being a little bitch about me being 'death-prone' or whatever. So you wouldn't even have died. Not on our watch"
"Pretty sure RCP is not the standard solution to panic attacks, junkie" Andrew says, sounding bored, while he walks into the room, tray in his hands. "Panic attacks, also, don't really kill people that often. He would've fainted, at worst"
"Should be standard. Gets the heart right again, does it not?"
Andrew drops the tray to the floor. Only, he doesn't drop it. The jug full of ice and water is intact, as is the glass right next to them. Jean serves himself a glass, drowning it as quickly as possible. It stings. It helps, with the whole "I hate my throat" thing. Harm reduction, Dobson called it.
"You're such a fucking idiot" Andrew says, before reaching down to tug Neil's hair. Neil looks up, their eyes lock, and Jean feels so disgusted that he almost forgets why he's on the floor, to start with. Can they be any less PDA-inclined?
Then again, Jeremy and him are worse. So.
There's silence. And, then, "Jean. We could find a way"
Jean is confused. Andrew, clearly, is not. Jeremy and him love each other, but even theh can admit that there's no other couple with such a level of telepathy as the Josten-Minyard one. It's quite off-putting.
" 'We' sounds like a lot of people" Andrew complains, his tone one of slight annoyance. Regardless, he drops down next to Neil. One of the cats migrates to his lap. He absentmindedly scratches its head, just like he did Neil.
"I'm not following"
They both look at him like he's an imbecile. In return, he glares.
"To get you out of the contract" Neil clarifies. Except, that doesn't clarify anything. Jean Moreau, even as a free man, belongs to the Moriyamas. Not the Nest, or Riko, anymore. It's as much freedom as anyone like him can wish for. Jean Moreau has, is and will endure.
Yes, he hyperventilates whenever the topic of children comes up. Because Jeremy wants kids. A big, happy, loving family. Jean, unfortunately, wants the same.
He doesn't want kids as much as he fears his debt. Their future. His work. Their worth.
Andrew made the offhand comment of Aaron's twins coming to visit next week. About how it seems that the whole group of "Neil's friends" are eager to overpopulate the world with mini nuisances and how he pitied the teachers that had to ever work with such offspring. How it feels like they're the only ones sane enough to avoid such a burden. He didn't mean anything by it. That didn't stop Jean from spiraling. Intent and reaction are, often, not the same thing.
"I stress that you should just get the Care Bear to replace you. He likes Exy. He likes you. Surely we can guilt him into agreeing"
"Non," he answers immediately. They've had this conversation. Jeremy has offered. Jean has refused. It is enough, that one of them is tainted by the Moriyamas. Jeremy's life is not and has never been perfect, but Jean refuses to add a whole ass mafia deal to that.
Andrew shrugs, unapologetically. Jean is not offended. Andrew is a no-nonsense kind of man. A "straight to the point" kind of man. He, probably, thinks that his suggestions are helping, somehow.
"There has to be another way." Neil muses, looking at the ceiling. "We already negotiated with Ichirou, once. Maybe time's made him softer? He's got kids, now. Fatherhood softens people up. Or so I hear."
"Your father tried to kill you. At least thirty times. Almost succeeded half of those, too" Jean reminds him, trying to stay out of the whole family conversation. Neil has never been one for careful sentences. He doesn't mean anything by it. Then, again, intent and reaction.
"It's his personality. He brings out the worst in people" Andrew adds, interlocking his pinky with Neil's pinky, before leaning in and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. Gross.
"Rude. Also, Ichirou is way more level headed than Nathan. We could try, at least."
"Absolutely no, you neuron-lacking flea."
"Over my dead body, Josten."
"Again, rude. You two never let me have any fun. Kevin is influencing you too much, I swear."
Jean doesn't feel like thinking about Kevin, so he takes out one of the bobby pins in his hair and throws it at Neil's face. Andrew snorts. Charbon looks at the interaction with curiosity. So does Neil.
There is silence, again. For a while. And, then, "Neil will play Exy until he can't, anyways" Andrew points out.
Jean is confused. Neil, clearly, is not. He looks at Andrew with such an open expression of vulnerability and worry, that Jean has to look away.
"Drew, you know that-"
"I said 'life', didn't I? Same team. Same house."
"Five years ago."
"Haven't changed my mind."
"Still. I know you hate it."
"As much as I hate you. I've put up with you this long. I will handle it."
"Are you two always this fucking cryptic? Jesus Christ"
They share a look. Andrew nods. Neil hesitates. Andrew pokes him in the ribs.
"Andrew is willing to make a deal. We- we talked about it, some years ago, when Kevin had that skating accident. It's, uh, a backup plan. Asking Ichirou to pass the contract down."
"For a price." Andrew adds. As if that isn't the most unhinged, crazy and stupid thing Jean has ever heard them say. And God knows that that's a very high list.
"You're joking with me."
"Do I look like a fucking clown, Moreau?"
"As a matter of fact, yes. I will not pass down my burden to you. Plus, it is, surprisingly, a decent plan. There is no other goalie out there who is making more money than you. Ichirou would be stupid if he didn't agree. Which means that you have to keep that option open. Neil is constantly looking for new ways of getting himself killed. I will not tolerate having you, either of you, on the chopping block for me. Not if I can help it"
He is angry. Do they think so selfish? So entitled? So uncaring? He feels nauseous. Charbon puts her paws on his chest, licking his face. He shouldn't feel offended, but he does. They don't mean anything by it. Intent, reaction.
"I'm already involved with our dear asian Shobhuza. Pretty sure he doesn't like me, already."
"Non. Absolutely no. Don't even- no. No. Are you listening to me? Never."
They glare at each other. Years ago, Jean would fold, Andrew's gaze reminding him too much of handcuffs and needles. He doesn't.
"Dramatic" Neil mutters in singsong. They glare at him, now. He has the audacity to giggle.
"We'll figure something out." he says, so sure of himself. How can someone so short be so full of confidence, Jean will never know.
"Even if we don't," Andrew adds, with something close to warmth in his tone, "surely the two of you can survive without passing on those dreadful genes of yours for a few more years"
"We were thinking of fostering" he murmurs, softly. So softly that he's unsure if they heard him or not. Andrew freezes, midway through petting his cat. Neil's eyes widen. Charbon gives a friendly bark.
Andrew and Neil look at each other. Do they ever do anything else?
"We'll find a way," Andrew says. Promises. Begs. Asks. Neil nods, gaze heavy with duty. They hold hands. Neil squeezes. Andrew squeezes back.
Jean feels like he might have another panic attack. How can they be so reckless? For him, out of all people?
Then, again, he would do the same. Sacrifices and promises.
Is there any other way to live?

Nintendo-vember Level 4 (Part 2): Because this one had way too many pictures to make a point...
Continuation of the following post
Okay, so in addition to Dobson's own Link not really looking very familiar to the actual Nnintendo designs, I also decided to do the following. Getting a bit into hair sperging, I pulled out this little chart for hair color.
Now, to compare it with the Link designs predominant before OoT came out.
So we got Link from the first Zelda being somewhere between light blond and blond, Zelda 2 Link being dark blond and SNES and Gameboy era Link (who are the same and as such the favorite incarnation of Link gamewise according to Dobson) at Light Blond.
Where could dark brown haired Link come from?
Oh, right! The Douchebag of Time.
It is just weird to me, that the hair color is something Dobson has taken such a grief with when it comes to Link. Cause in all honesty, I am not certain how such a minor design detail can affect ones enjoyment of the Zelda games that much. Anyway, to the last point
?????
Yeah okay, I admit I am not quite certain what the last panel is even supposed to be about. I think Dobson wants to criticize the fact that now multiple Links exist, instead of the Legend of Zelda series being kinda like Mario. You know, one character all the time fighting the same villain over and over, instead of there being different incarnation of the character (and others such as Zelda and Ganondorf). I should admit, that aside of the OoT/Majoraâs Mask Link, I kinda assumed actually till the release of Four Swords/Wind Waker, that the Game Boy and the SNES games followed only one Link. Which even nowadays in the branched timeline continuity they still do
Which btw proves my point from earlier, that it was only post OoT the execs kinda screwed the timeline up in such a manner, we would need the TVA to fix it. Anyway, till Four Swords came out, I thought Link was really just going to be the same hero in all games, just with a different design each depending on whatever consoleâs technical abilities. Then the multiple incarnatins and timeline thing became the norm and⊠well, I donât get what is bad about multiple Links or making it that the games are kinda their own thing/continuity in a certain manner.
For example, I can still play Wind Waker also as something of a solo game if I take the backstory of how Hyrule ended up under the sea just as a backstory on its own, instead of thinking about its context in a bigger narrative. Plus it allows programmers and people in the story development department to kinda go crazy/creative with designs for characters and locations, because they arenât âbondâ to capture the style of a previous game to the point that even slight variations would feel out of place. Like imagine doing Breath of the Wild style Ritos in Wind Waker or adapting the 2D Zelda environment of A Link to the Past without much variety into 3D. Plus I think that if we only followed one Link time and time again, his adventures would pretty much become less special over time, because him fighting Ganon then becomes more of an average Tuesday chore.
SoâŠThat was Dobsonâs comic venting about what he hates about OoT. And I have to say, a lot of these complains (as I tried to explain here) are arbitrary as hell to me. Dobson essentially complaind about aesthetical choices the game made, that all things considered were kinda necessary for this franchise to make the jump not only into the 3D era of gaming, but also in the storydriven era of gaming itself.
See, I like the Zelda series, but as a fantasy series up to this point, I wouldnât really call it the most âchallengingâ game storywise. Defeat an evil pig demon, save the princess, explore dungeons. That was it and kinda is still the base line appeal of those games. But even just compared to some stories we got by comparison for example on the SNES (Breath of the Wild 2, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6) Zelda was not really that deep. This game may not have even been the first Zelda game with a bit more âdepthâ to it (Linkâs Awakening was that for me with the island being revealed to cease exisisting once the Widfish awoke), but it certainly was one that fleshed the world of Hyrule out a lot and in doing so introduced multiple technical, story relevant and aesthetical aspects to the franchise, that went beyond what A Link to the Past already had done in 1991. And that game in my opinion, while great, mostly just improved on the aesthetical aspects by assuring the game looked better in 16-bits than anything on the 8-bit NES. Â
To be fair though, I may also just be a bit biased here, because Ocarina of Time was an important game in my childhood I have very fond memories of. Both in context of the game, but also outside of it. But considering I am not the only one who likes it, I think it is safe to say that it is a good game. Is it the best Zelda game ever? Well, we have Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom now, so likely no. But it is certainly within the top four Zelda games and will likely stay there even the next few decades. And acting like it is total shit and its fans are âlesserâ being for enjoying it, is not just contrarian, it is outright insulting. So in that regard: Fuck you Andy. May Octorocks ejaculate upon you, while the rest of the world finds enjoyment in that game.
And on that note... Happy anniversary to the Ocarina of Time. The best wishes from me for Impa, Ruto, Darunia, the Twinorvas, Ganondorf, Epona, Sheik, Zelda, Link, Navi, Sarina and all the other characters and the people behind Ocarina of Time for giving us one of the best games on the N64 and within one of the most beloved Nintendo game series ever.
May your melody be heard for 25 more years at least.

last but most certainly not least. pt 3 of the bonus chapters (TKM)
Aaron's chapter (once again going to be putting like. the whole thing here.)
One of these days Aaron would love to know what about that mouthy liar had people bending over backwards for him [...] He could waste his time being angry, or he could go the tried-and-true Minyard route of infuriating everyone else around him.
i love how much he despises neil fr. and the Minyard route???? i love that
"Hey, Bee," Aaron said.
why did this like. give me such nathaniel neil vibes. hes so cunty for this im obsessed
Andrew looked relaxed where he was tucked into the corner of the couch, one knee hugged loosely to his chest, but Aaron wasn't fooled. They were twins: there was too much of them in each other despite all the years they'd spent apart.
one) andrew is so cosy <333 two) ouch. THERE WAS TOO MUCH OF THEM IN EACH OTHER DESPITE ALL THE YEARS THEY'D SPENT APART????? literally screaming into a pillow at this one
"Did you know Andrew's fucking Neil?" [...] Andrew cut in with a flat, "I'm not." Andrew wouldn't waste his breath lying when Aaron was right here to argue with him, but Aaron knew his accusation wasn't far off the mark. [...] That Andrew hadn't sealed the deal yet was the least important detail, but Aaron was willing to be an ass about it.
I love that andrew is banking on the technicality that like. no he's not. they haven't. and aaron saying andrew hadn't "sealed the deal" has me SCREAMING. thats so funny
"Go slash some tires, or whatever it is you do for fun."
HES SO FUNNYYY
"You made him a priority," Aaron said. "[...] but for the record, I think he's an insufferable asshole. [...] Exy this, Exy that, get a fucking hobby. Oh, but i guess he did?" He sent a pointed look at Andrew.
GET A FUCKING HOBBY. aaron minyard i'd die for you.
"You know, I asked him about you. I asked him if he was taking advantage of you. He tried to punch me out." "You bring out that urge in people," Andrew said.
i'm so glad that we know now that andrew knows about this interaction. like i wonder how he felt hearing that.
"Betsy and I were talking about Monday." [...] Andrew hadn't called her "Betsy" in over a year. He'd never seen Andrew so hard on a back foot, and it was as terrifying as it was thrilling. [...] Andrew didn't want to talk about Neil with Dobson because once he broached that subject he either had to lie to all of them or admit Neil was more important that he wanted him to be.
throwing up, literally no words just throwing up
"I like Neil's promise ring, by the way."
AARONNNNN. HIS PROMISE RING. PLEASE. and also the "Matching set, very cute." why is he so funny
Andrew's smile was all ice, and he wielded honesty like a knife. "They're not decorative, you ignorant little shit. Someone like you wouldn't understand the importance of hiding scars." [...] Aaron would have to figure it out later, but not now. Andrew was trying to pull him off track and [...] he'd never find his way back if he followed it to whatever ugly truth Andrew was hiding. He forced Andrew words aside to haunt him later
this just made me wonder if there's every going to be a moment where aaron figures out what this means. like. my stomach feels sick thinking about it just him having this moment where it clicks and makes sense and he realises what andrew's hiding and will they ever be able to have that conversation?????
"It bother you your pet project is queer?"
AARON
"I'm not always okay with what he is, but these days it's less that he's gay it's that he's [...] weaponized it. It took him so long to come to terms with it that now he lashes out first, pushing as hard as he can to figure out who's safe and who isn't."
nicky baby :(( why does this make me so sad
"I don't care that you're gay, and I don't care that you picked the literal most irritating person on the planet to fall for. I care that you're being a hypocrite."
Aaron Minyard #1 neil josten hater.
Andrew was picking idly at his jeans: an agitated tic that had mostly disappeared once his medicine was out of his system. [...] Maybe he needed a few more moments to come to terms with their easy acceptance. [...] Finding out how important he was to Andrew was an ongoing, eye-opening experience. Finding out just how important Dobson was, that Andrew wouldn't risk her unfavourable opinion by telling her the truth about his sexuality, was equally fascinating. [...] She truly mattered to Andrew when so few people did anymore.
once again andrew :((( my boy :((( why am i crying
"I love Katelyn. I love her more than anything. I want to spend the rest of my life with her, but I am trying so goddamned hard to wait until graduation because you asked me to. So why aren't you doing the same?" "You have abysmal taste in girls," Andrew told him.
KATEAARON YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS TO MEEE
"Neurosurgeon, right?" [...] He and [his mother] had been watching a medical drama with dinner while Andrew hovered silent and distant in the doorway, and Aaron had foolishly said, I want to do that. His mother laughed him out of the room for daring to think he could make anything of himself."
one) andrew talking about aaron to bee two) andrew being the only person who remembered or knew he wanted to be a neurosurgeon three) his mom laughing at him :(( for daring the think he could make anything of himself???? what the fuck and also andrew signing to the team for aaron's sake to get him through college to follow his dreams??? sobbing
"I'm trying, okay? I'm trying. Years too late, I know, but you refused me first. I begged you to come home with me. You can't blame me for not trusting you." "I am capable of multitasking," Andrew said. Aaron heard what he didn't say: I blame us both.
SDHFGAOLFGAJRDHGJDF
"She's just another tiny skirt here to use him up and distract him from what he wants."
ANDREW
"My hands are full with too many idiots," Andrew said. "When she shows her true colors, I will not have the energy to put him together again."
one) liar. i know you'd go to the ends of the earth again and again and again for him. two) TOO MANY IDIOTS
"You can't be brothers while you are each other's jailors."
:D screaming
"Says the man dating a mafioso." "I'm not dating him," Andrew said, with a hint of impatience. Aaron saw right through him, and it was enough to make him smile as he turned his gaze out the window. "Liar."
sobbing. they love each other so much and Andrew is such a liar and i can't deal with them. they kill me

hii!! i love your artstyle, have you drawn the twinyards before? consider this an aftgtober prompt if you want :P
Aaron had always wondered why Andrew bothered to sign with Wymack's ragtag team. Not for his own benefit, surely, since Andrew claimed education was a waste of time and Exy almost as tedious. How rude, that a few words from Dobson could put so much into perspective.

This is my attempt at finding the perfect cast for All for the game characters
I've spent like 3 days searching for actors that could resemble them as much as possible (at least for how I imagined them to be) and I think I finally came up with something??
It's not perfect and I'm open to suggestions but I had a feeling that this fandom needed an "official" cast
Let me know what you think
Neil Josten: Nicholas Alexander Chavez
Andrew Minyard: Freddie Fox
Aaron Minyard: Freddie Fox
Katelyn Mackenzie: Kristine Froseth
Nicholas Hemmick: Nathaniel Dass
Kevin Day: Zack Nelson
Renee Walker: Teagan Croft
Allison Reynolds: Margot Robbie
Seth Gordon: Colton Haynes
Danielle Wilds: Zoë Kravitz
Matthew Boyd: Regé-Jean Page
David Wymack: Hugh Jackman
Abigail Winfield: Blake Lively
Betsy Dobson: Regina Hall
Jean-Yves Moreau: Matthew Daddario
Jeremy Knox: Gavin Casalegno
Catalina Alvarez: Hailee Steinfeld
Laila Dermott: Madelyn Renee Cline
((let's imagine nicholas and freddie exchange eyes so neil and andrew would actually have the right colour :)
Also not too sure about catalina and laila but i really like hailee as cat soo maybe it could work))

Do you think Jean might be the person Kevin cares about the most? Like. I know this freak is super smart but he learnt to speak French fluently in like 3 years. In secret! When he only cared about history and exy.
honestly, i genuinely think he does. but also when you take a look at the people kevin cares about i just think kevin cares about jean in such an unique and deep way that's different from the way he might care about others.
he gives dobson full permission to discuss the things that have come up during his sessions if it helps jean. kevin has seen jean at his worst at the ravens nest, but i think jean has seen a great deal of abuse towards kevin too. kevin's might not be as bad as jean, but he was still a pet to them.
they will always have that shared trauma and i think kevin will always carry the heavy burden of leaving the nest before jean did. i think if needed kevin will always go out of his way to be there for jean if jean will just ask for it (f.e: coach rhemann asks kevin to help jean with his first press conference ? media appearance ? and kevin is ready to jump on a plane and be there next to jean or jeremy calls him late at night and asks him if riko broke his hand and even though only a dozen people know and he does not want to talk about it, because the situation is 'resolved' he trusts jeremy with this truth).
a few other examples of people he cares about: andrew, neil, coach wymack. i think he will always care for andrew, not just for the potential he sees in him, but for the fact andrew was his partner outside the nest. i think it's andrew who has been there for him when he needed to adjust to a normal(ish) life routine. i think he cares for neil for his potential, but also for all neil has given him in return, even though they all had to face hell for it. i think he cares for coach wymack because that's his father, but even when david wymack had no idea kevin knew he was a person he could run to and never even doubted it.
in general i think kevin day cares so deeply for the people around him and although he's not a soft person, his actions and feelings are.
