I honestly feel like it’s because nuanced issues don’t lend themselves well to sick dunks and memes. They require time, research, and a genuine effort to understand. And for all that work, you’re often rewarded with a very unsatisfying conclusion.

To understand that men are oppressors (because they are complicit and reap benefits of the system—even if they are actively fighting against it) but also that the system screws them in unique ways which are often overlooked? That doesn’t leave you with much to get fired up about. How do I attack the source of my frustration without inadvertently hitting uneducated but well-meaning schmoes?

Fighting a faceless system is hard. Making a strawman and beating it mercilessly is easy. But to do that second one, you have to either lack the understanding, or simply ignore it because it’s easier that way.

Most people end up choosing the latter for whichever reason, and then—as is the case with extremism—the pendulum inevitably swings back the other way. So now we care about men’s feelings to protect them from the “bad” feminists, and that means that once again men’s feelings are placed above women’s safety. Just with a different coat of paint, I guess.

This yo-yo approach to social issues is allowed to happen because a majority of the people driving the conversation literally don’t understand it and have never truly tried to. They just read something that made them mad and went “yeah actually, fuck (X) because (Y&Z) said so.”

Men are oppressors under the current power structure. Oppressor does not mean evil. Oppressor doesn’t exclude you from being an ally. If it makes you feel bad? Well, it should because it sucks. But it’s not personal, and anyone who tries to make it personal is probably trying to sell you something. Existing in an unfair system isn’t your fault. Denying that unfairness or protecting its structural integrity however IS your fault, and DOES make you a bad person.

(don’t be a dick to individuals for a societal failing, probably, but also don’t forget that there is indeed a societal failing or two that need correcting even if it makes some people uncomfortable)
