A little kid and his mother are trick or treating in another city, perhaps at some kind of event rather than knocking on doors, and the kid is dressed as Phantom. It’s very adorable, with his little ghost-shaped bucket and clearly homemade and already stained costume—listen, white only works if you can just fly over street grime or phase it out of your clothes—and his slightly I’ll fitting wig. The kid is SO happy to be out and about dressed as his favorite, and maybe even showed it off to Phantom back in Amity Park before his family left.

The hero, insert whoever you wish here, is probably in civvies and just enjoying the event. The kid, meanwhile, is so glad when people ask who he is so he can explain, and so- the hero gets to hear ALL ABOUT the local town hero who is probably pretty small time despite the kid’s clearly exaggerated stories. The hero certainly never heard of him, but the kid’s mom confirms that Phantom really was the town hero, despite some mixed reviews of the poor guy.

“Did you manage to show him your costume?” the hero asks.

“Yeah! We went down to the cemetery to leave flowers and I got to show him my costume.”

Wait. Cemetery? Maybe it was part of theme, because Phantom had to be named that for a reason, but… it sounded like…

The kid ignores the suddenly VERY still hero and instead turns to his mom. “Momma, do you think we should bring him candy? He doesn’t get to trick or treat like we do, and I can work super hard to get him a bunch!”

The kid’s mom just smiles. “We could, but maybe we should bring him something homemade. I bet he’d like something more filling, teen boys like him have a hollow leg.”

The kid wrinkles his nose. “Like Vernie with the pizza bagels?”

“Like your cousin, yes. We can make some cinnamon rolls and take them to his memorial, maybe bring some of the apples from your grandpa’s garden…”

The hero is pretty much forgotten as the two-part family wanders off, not quite intentionally forgetting the hero is there so much as the hero somewhat accidentally ended the conversation when they just froze and didn’t ask anything further.

Not that the hero didn’t want to. But they’d learn something very serious.

One—there was a small town hero they’d never heard of. Two—that hero was apparently a teen. Third—most pressingly, the teen hero was both beloved enough to have kids dressing up as him and dead enough to have a grave.

This… might require some phone calls.

Alaa and family - vetted - Alaa and her husband were displaced from their home on October 7, while Alaa was pregnant. Alaa's husband died before their daughter was even born, and now Alaa is raising her baby without him, after having to give birth without the needed medical care. Because of the poor conditions, her daughter has been suffering from illness, including a viral stomach infection and histolytica worms. Alaa needs to pay for her daughter's medical treatments, and for milk and diapers which are very expensive in Palestine right now. They have $14,280 raised out of their $30,000 goal. Wafaa Abdul Karim Abu Al-Rish and family - vetted / vetted - The fundraiser is for Wafaa (@wafaaresh3) and her family, which includes her mother, her brother Mohi (@mohiy-gaza), her sister Fidaa (@fidaa-family2), and Fidaa's two children (Sila, who is two years old, and Mohamed, who is 6 months old). They also have a cat. They have been displaced more than 10 times. Wafaa's mother has chronic illness (hypertension), and is unable to access her medicine, which means her health is getting increasingly worse over time. The main goal of the fundraiser is to help the family evacuate to Egypt. Wafaa's fundraiser has $74,018 raised out of her $85,000 goal.

the gojo twins are hilarious because your baby boy looks exactly like satoru, but has very little of his personality—it seems like the only things he inherited was satoru’s love for sweets and love for you. still, even though he’s a strong swimmer, he much prefers to relax in his floaties alongside you if you’re also in the pool, or chill by your side on a lounge chair, glasses too big for his face keeping the sun out of his eyes as he shares his smoothie with you, and asks to borrow your phone to take pictures of his sister and daddy in the pool. 

your baby girl on the other hand… she might have your face but she’s got satoru’s everything else—his competitive streak, his confidence, and definitely his mischievous nature. she’s the one who tiptoes into your bedroom at five in the morning, tapping at her daddy’s shoulders, and putting her little finger over his lip to shush him before he can wake you up; she’s always the one to convince satoru to take her swimming the backyard at the crack of dawn, and why by the time you and your baby boy wake up, she and satoru are already past warm up laps and swimming lessons and onto who can make the splashiest canonball competitions (she always wins because while her tiny body can endure a belly flop, satoru’s years of training physically doesn’t allow him to do it… and maybe because he’s not so competitive when it comes to his baby girl, he’ll always let her win). 

kento’s professional judo career honestly doesn’t last very long. after his first olympic games, you two start dating and he proposes just after he wins gold the second time he’s in the olympics; he does maybe two more years of national competitions while you’re pregnant, and decides that the intense training for the next two years in preparation of a third olympic competition isn’t worth missing time he could spend with you or your baby girl—plus, with all the money he’s made from competitions, winning gold medals, brand ambassadorships, commercials, and collaborations, he had enough money to provide for all of your for the rest of your lives. so, that’s what he does (his dream has always been to be a househusband, anyway...) his previous salaryman career comes in handy when deciding how to invest his money, how to buy a house, how to take care of his friends, how to set up a fund for your daughter, and an extra account or two… just incase more babies come along… 

by the time your baby girl is four, she’s already kento’s biggest fan. she loudly and proudly proclaims to everybody that her daddy was basically superman and won all the shiny trophies and medals in the house from when he was being a superhero. if anyone recognizes kento when they’re out together, she always confirms their suspicions, proudly boasting, “yeah kento is my daddy! he’s a winner!” it always makes kento’s heart swell to hear her praise. he doesn’t compete professionally anymore, but he does train from time to time, and has taken on a few mentees, and your daughter LOVES to watch him coach/train. she’s got her own uniform that she always puts on whenever they go to the gym together, and gets so excited when kento or ino or yuuji pretend to spar with her. 

she’s honestly kento’s mini figure. she’s respectful and reserved, but strong and knows when to fight and how to use her voice. there’s a time when he gets a call from her school saying that she got in a fight, the principal frames it as your daughter needlessly pushing around an older kid, but your daughter is certain in her words when she tells her dad that it was because the kid was being mean to the younger kids, and to her. kento doesn’t say a word to the teachers—doesn’t even fight them sending her home early for the day, because he’s happy to scoop her up and take her out for ice cream and tell her that he’s proud of her.

sorry to be an archaeologist (archaeo student, but still), but I can't stop thinking about this. i know nobody else cares about this the thing is I don't think you understand just how right gordon is here. I don't think even gordon understands. the foundation of (we live in a) society really is all about the ability to store surplus of food.

that's the difference between hunter-gatherers and farmers, between nomadic and sedentary lifestyles, this is the neolithic revolution. Storing the food we don't eat immediately allowed us more freedom to focus on technology, art, and architecture. this is the reason we only see monumental structures being built after we settled down and started pretty much hoarding as many resources as we could. this is the foundation of society, of social hierarchy, of religion, you name it.

the world that exists now exists because of salt, honey, vinegar and ice. I appreciate this perspective so much because we rarely take a culinary approach to the changes and revolutions in pre- and ancient history. we tend to focus on the emerging power structures and elites, the conflicts and warriors, the cities and empires - pretty much all the things that divide people. so, looking at this from the perspective of food, specifically food preservation, is actually so nice and refreshing and I want to know what article Jon read for this (give me that jstor link)

SECond of all. the history of mummification make me unwell. theres So much that I think people miss about it bc it's always like mummies > ancient egypt > pyramids > aliens (I'll kill you im so fucking tired). I could go on and on about how burial rites are the purest expression of love and care that humans have ever developed but the mention of chinchorro culture actually took me out.

I need everyone to understand that the chinchorro mummies are the oldest mummies we've discovered. because I will never forget when my south american archaeology prof spent like half an hour explaining to us that the oldest mummies in the world are children because child mortality rate was so high that losing so many children became so overwhelming they did the only thing they could to keep them alive - they removed soft tissues and covered them in clay, sculpted the features of each one of them and mourned. there's evidence that they displayed those mummies in public spaces - not cemeteries but main squares of settlements or built special structures to house all of their dead. this makes me insane bc 1. the idea that in antiquity and middle ages ppl would lose so many children they became desensitized to it is wrong - they literally could not get over it so much they invented a completely new way to bury somebody (or really, keep the alive) and 2. the desire to keep our dead with us forever, in any way we can, for as long as we can, is literally over 7 thousand years old. it's older than bronze metallurgy, it's older than any empire, any country, it's older than domesticated horses and bees. insaneeee.

and I think this is an interesting contrast to how human preservation is portrayed throughout most of red valley, which is - rich people trying to avoid the consequences of their own actions while damning everyone else, or as a punishment, a new type of prison. the chinchorro mummies are literally the difference between all of that and gordon and warren being frozen for 44 years to give them a better chance, a new life. it's the preservation of someone you care about born from the refusal to let them go, the inability to face reality, the complete defiance of the natural order of things. Aubrey freezing them - and thus not letting them die - is literally no different from the chinchorro mummies, and egyptian mummies, and bog bodies, and scythian kurgans, and roman hypogea, and every great monument. archaeology is a study of everything we had and how we lost it and how we grieved it. someone hold my hand.

When the interviewer asked when we should expect s5 to be coming out, that’s when Shawn mentioned that a little bit of an answer to that might be out there soon.

He actually mentions that this answer could be out by the time the video for this interview comes out, and since this interview was filmed mid-May and it’s now mid-June, I’m assuming we could be getting something soon or within the next couple months, potentially about a release date aka possibly a small teaser with 2025 stamped at the end…
