Fandom Hypocrisy: Overlooking the Complex Narrative of Aegon ii Targaryen's Arc

I am writing this post as an extension to the previous reblogged post, which discussed the absurd theories circulating in the fandom about Aegon potentially violating his own mother 🙄🤦‍♀️ The obsession of this fandom with their personal headcanons can be quite absurd at times. It's even more ridiculous when their hatred for Aegon as a character overshadows the thematic significance of his story. It astounds me how this fandom can excuse and even romanticise the despicable actions of certain rapists and pedophiles, all because they happen to be their favourite character... BUT when it comes to Aegon's complex and nuanced character, suddenly everyone becomes a purist about morality and duty.

After all, so much of Aegon's journey is about facing unpredictable challenges and persevering against overwhelming odds. This should not be overlooked or overshadowed by personal biases towards his character. Here, I will delve into my own take on the central theme that drives Aegon's journey:

His main character arc revolves around rejecting his responsibilities until he is forced to face them! He defies tradition at every turn: neglecting his pure Valyrian bloodline, disheveled appearance compared to other royals, lack of drive for his claim and nonchalance towards establishing his house's legacy - yet still possessing all the quintessential traits of a true Targaryen heir: dragon rider and legitimate children through his sister-wife, and strongest claim to the throne via Andal tradition.

Aegon's upbringing was marked by years of abuse and neglect. He was born as a 'duty to the realm', and even his own kin saw him as nothing more than a disposable pawn in the race for the throne. It is crucial to examine how the political game unfolded in order to understand Aegon's position. He was forced into the role of a leader with very little support and resources - only 4 dragons compared to his opponent's 14, and one-third of the major houses backing him. Despite the odds stacked against him, he emerged as the underdog who ultimately prevailed.

Towards the end of the dance, he was a broken man, but still emerged as the ultimate victor. The discarded and overlooked son became the heir to his father's legacy. The Targaryen prince, who had never shown much interest in his legacy or his claim to the throne, ended up being the true winner of the Dance - a war that ultimately sealed the fate of his House in the long run. Though his legacy may have been diminished with Jaehaera's untimely death, the green faction still triumphed in both ideological and future succession battles, ensuring the eventual downfall of House Targaryen by depleting their most powerful weapons - their dragons!

This narrative is much more intricate, but in a fandom where people are quick to react with anger without fully grasping the depth of his character's development, it can become diluted. It deserves a more thorough examination, but unfortunately, there are individuals who attack anyone who posts anything positive about Aegon by labeling them as 'rape apologists'.

Aemond can truly be called a villain after he'll execute the Strongs at Harrenhal and burns the Riverlands…until then, I definitely agree that it's way too soon to assign him this label. Maybe so far he would deserve it for killing Luke, but like you said, TB stans refuse to condemn Daemon and call him a villain for his bad deeds and will keep doing so even after B&C, yet we're supposed to do it with Aemond?

I also agree with the other anon that it's some Aegon stans who are often starting this whole Aegon vs Aemond discourse and I also think it's mostly because they are frustrated with how Aegon was treated by the writers vs how Aemond was (I think they did it to prop up Rhaenyra though, not Aemond, so everyone watching the show sides with her claim) but frankly they should direct their complaints at them instead of beefing with Aemond fans and lowkey hoping that Aemond also gets villainized next season by having him act like a psycho who cares about nothing except himself instead of receiving a proper arc with him slowly descending into madness.

That's not to say Aemond stans are innocent in all this. We all know how the Aemondwives act about him, claiming he's this very loyal, dutiful prince, who truly cares about the women in his lives and would never SA a woman (vs Aegon who's a rapist and Daemon who's a pedo -- just pointing out some of them say when they compare the men) and generally someone who'll never do anything, intentionally or not, that puts Aegon's claim or his family into danger…which we know is false and I'm sure they will change their tune once he hooks up with Alys ("hey we never said he's dutiful", "doing his duty did him no good, he still became a kinslayer, now he has every right to choose love this time since Alys is the only one who can love him for himself", etc.) and effectively loses the war for the Greens by abandoning King's Landing and then separating with Criston.

yeah neither aegon nor aemond have completely innocent stans who didn't feed in some way into the discourse. and with aemond stans it's tricky because many of them are not fans of tg characters, just aemond, so i've seen some say they don't care if he leaves them all for alys because they would too. some jokingly some not, it's the same narrative as parentified aemond narrative.

Ask on Holding BTS Responsible for Supreme Boi (Repost)

Anonymous: I think you are not a new Army, so, may I know what can you say about BTS (rapline undeniably) still close or in contact with Supreme Boi? I have found out that many Armys are disappointed with that about BTS still having a relationship with him and some are reached to the point that leave the fandom/ community. Do you know about this issue? Fans are free to think whatever they want, no? Some people have an issue with BTS working with Supreme Boi, others don’t. (Anybody curious about what Supreme Boi is like is free to google it, seeing his aggressive behavior against the rapline when they were trainees ruined my view of him and everything I've learned of him since then I don't like, not sorry to say I’m not a fan). And those who don’t have a problem with it, are perhaps also those who aren’t unstanning Adora for working within the same team as Supreme Boi, for almost as long as BTS have, and she in fact only left the team to pursue her own career ambitions (solo Adora is very much needed). Or perhaps those not unstanning any SM or YG groups despite creating profit for, and cohabiting in, the same environment that produces convicted rapists, sex traffickers and tax evaders who personally promote NFTs (the IT boogeyman of the 21st century) on their own personal Instagrams. People not unstanning those groups despite the persistent reports of an environment that dismisses the mental health of their idols until it can no longer be ignored or something incredibly tragic happens. And this is before we start talking about the slave contracts and blood merch.

Of course, whoever is not content to lay responsibility for individual actions on the person itself or whoever that person is directly contractually managed by - in this case it would the company, not BTS - whoever is not content to do that, should please leave the fandom / community, as you say they’re already doing.

Anon, for this person’s own good, I’d also suggest they try to steer clear of trap, modern pop, and hip hop, especially if they’re sensitive to the “drinking & drugs” part. The soundtrack for a show like Euphoria for example, is definitely a no-go area for people like that. Let’s not even get into the reputations of half the producers at Republic Records. You know, the same team that produces artists like Drake, James Bay, Florence + The Machine, Zendaya, Post Malone, etc.

Many people in the Korean music industry are unfortunately sometimes unscrupulous characters. Supreme Boi isn’t the first or even the only one in his cohort like that, and some of those people are currently employed by other ‘Big 3’ idol agencies. You see this gossip all over Korean Instagram or Daum. To answer your last question, perhaps the company (the only group of people potentially liable for Supreme Boi, given the contract directly between the employer and employed) should give a statement. I don’t see other agencies doing this though, unless if that person has already been very publicly and legally charged. So it’s unlikely this will happen. Anyway, those who want to leave will leave, and those who don’t, won’t leave.

TWD 11x03: Hunted - Details

Okay, let's talk details. At the beginning, nearly everyone gets hurt and then gets separated.

 ***As always, spoilers abound below for episode 11x03: Hunted. Don’t read until you’ve watched!***

I noticed that in the opening credits, we now see the two rows of hanging bodies to represent the Reapers.

Maggie:

Elijah tries to help Maggie but is yanked backward and disappears. We don’t see him the rest of the episode. I really hope he’s okay. ☹

When Maggie is walking around alone, we see a car with an open door that's emphasized. It reminds me very much of this shot from 5x09.

@wdway​ also noticed some chevron symbols in the parking lot. (Chevron Theory)

She passes the dumpster before she actually gets into the mall building. That might be called back to Glenn. She also uses glass alcohol bottles as a warning system. I'm sure I don't have to explain the parallels there.

There's definitely a rat thing going on here, which is important because of 10x21, but I can tell you that we see (hear) it in episode 11x04 as well. I just noticed the subtitles tell us that there are rats squeaking quite a lot. After finding Negan and Alden, Negan pushes for Alden to be left behind. He doesn’t like being on the road. He says the plan is bad and unsafe.

Then they hear screaming and run toward Agatha. Duncan is hurt and clearly not going to make it. He says, "We were good. We were lucky." Both Beth lines. Maggie puts him down after promising to get Agatha home.

Now, that’s interesting to me. I said yesterday that we’re seeing a replay of Beth through many of these story lines, and I focused on Alden as a proxy. But I think Agatha is one, too. Just the fact that they talk about getting her “home,” makes her a proxy. Meanwhile, she doesn’t make it “home.” She’s bitten by a walker and left behind…in a mob of walkers. This is also where Negan drags Maggie away while she screams, “no!” Maybe indicative of her emotional response (not to mention her screaming in the parking lot of Grady) over losing Beth?

Jumping back a bit, before Agatha’s death, Maggie’s group travels through the woods. Negan and Maggie have an interesting exchange. Negan says of himself, "people change." Maggie says that no they don't.

So once again, it's called back to Beth dialogue, but Maggie is specifically harboring a belief that was the opposite of Beth's. That people don't and can't change. It's obvious that Maggie is on a very destructive path right now. She doesn’t really have faith in people, or faith that everything will work out okay. We can't be sure where this is going, but it's interesting. As I've said before, I'm sure this attitude of hers will probably end up causing drama down the road.

They happen upon a burnt walker that's tied to a tree with the sign that says Judas over his head. This super interesting. I know I have a lot of asks about this in my inbox. My first reaction is that we can tie it to the burnt walkers from 6x06, which was bursting with Beth symbolism. Since it’s obviously the CRM who was responsible for those burnt walkers, you have to wonder if there's a CRM tie here. 

We might also be able to tie this to the Governor’s episodes in 4a, where he found several decapitated corpses wearing military attire that also had signs near them like ‘murderer’ and ‘rapist.’ If nothing else, this shows that someone in the area is actually burning people for betrayal and labeling them as Judas. Doesn't exactly bode well for our group. But we don't know whether this was the Reapers or somebody else.

***Update: I wrote most of this post before seeing episode 11x04. I still think we can tie this burnt walker thematically to 6x06 and the CRM, but in terms of what is literally happening in this season, let’s just say this burnt walker will make a lot more sense after watching 11x04. I don’t want to give spoilers beyond that.***

Just before Maggie's group reaches the chapel they end up leaving Alden at, they pass green car. I don't think it's a Gremlin, like the one we saw in 7x05, but it's the same shade of green. 

And of course, we see the cross outside the church. Beth was wearing a cross bracelet in the hallway of Grady when she was shot. There are plenty of holes in the roof of the church (Hole in the Roof Theory.) At one point, Alden even says, "I'm dead weight." That was the name of 4x07, the Governor episode where they found the decapitated corpses.

At the chapel, we caught an interesting snippet of dialogue from Negan. He tells Maggie “the sun is going down” and that she’ll have to make a decision. We’ve always thought Beth would return with a dawn theme, which might mean literally that we’ll see her with a sunrise or something. So, it made me wonder if the “night” will be them fighting the conflict with the Reapers and then will return with the new “dawn.” Something like that. It might be literal or just thematic. We’ll just have to wait and see, though.

Maggie finally agrees to leave him behind, but she struggles with it mightily. They even have this really on the nose line where she says, "you better be here when I come back." And he answers, "you better come back." Think about how that would relate to Beth's arc.

Carol:

We see Carol and Kelly returning to Alexandria together. They have this whole thing where Magna thinks Carol is giving Kelly falls hope and wants her stop.

They also seem to be setting up something with Carol and Aaron. I'm not sure what it is. They're kind of at odds in this episode because he wants her to help with the walls and she wants to go track the horses. I thought it was interesting that Angela Kang, during the Inside Look bit, went out of her way to say that Carol and Aaron are not enemies. They're still good friends but they have different ideas about how to deal with the current crisis. I feel like they're setting up an arc with the two of them together.

When Carol was out looking for the horses, she finds Rosita. Rosita is scavenging MUSHROOMS. This part was super interesting because Carol tells her not to pick a certain type of mushroom unless she accidentally wants to make baby cocoa high for about a week. This is meant to be a joke, but it fits into the hallucination theory. I've noticed several mushroom mentions throughout the seasons. It’s an ongoing theme that I think ties into things not being as they seem, or a character to misunderstands or is deceived by something.

As I told my fellow theorists, I sat and thought about this for a minute. It's a little bit odd to me that they included Rosita’s response. When Carol says the mushrooms will make them high, Rosita answers, "yeah, but only for about a week, right?" It's meant to be a funny of course, and it is, but why put in a timeframe for the hallucination?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's a hint that the hallucinations or misconceptions people have been laboring under are about to fall away. That includes Daryl and Leah, but we can also extend it to Beth. If she lived, as we think she did, and TF think she died, then their belief in her death fits into the hallucination theory. Just thought that was interesting.

Rosita joins Carol in searching for the horses. At one point, she tells Carol about some dreams she's been having. (Kind of interesting to mention hallucinatory mushrooms and then talk about significant dreams, no?) Apparently, she's been dreaming about Abraham. She says he's trying to tell her something, something she supposed to do, something about Alexandria. But she can't actually hear what he's saying. (Hear no evil.) And just when she gets close enough to hear him in the dream, he gets shot in the head.

This is interesting on so many levels. First of all, dreams. We had the episode 6x12 of FTWD, titles, In Dreams. Abraham is a man Rosita once loved, and has lost. Most obviously, Abraham didn't die of a gunshot to the head. He died when Negan killed him. So, it feels like an excuse to mention someone being shot in the head. And of course Abraham was often a proxy to Beth. I’m definitely side eyeing this.

The other thing about this is that I've been noticing for a while that they have some big arc for Rosita coming up. They’ve done several sequences where she’s searching for weapons but is unable to find them for a time. She usually eventually finds them and uses them to somehow save the day or turn the tide of the conflict. 

We saw this in S7, and the weapon she found was Dwight, who defected and helped them win the war. We saw it during the warehouse sequence in S8 where she and Michonne were trying to stop the singing truck from going to the Sanctuary, and Rosita ended up with the rocket launcher. It’s a pattern that’s been happening for a while. I don't know how this dream of Abraham ties into that, but I’m wondering if this arc they’ve foreshadowed for several seasons is about to start playing out.

I don’t have a whole lot more to say about Carol tracking the horses, as I went over the most important stuff yesterday. I'm assuming that in this episode, that Kelly is equating the dead horses with Connie, and that's what upsets her so much.

After we see the horse run away from them, Kelly says, “fourth time’s the charm,” which means that was the third time they’d attempted it. (Rule of Threes).

When they get back to Alexandria, Carol cuts one of the horse’s throats to slaughter it for food. Aaron comes to help her, and he looks at her very compassionately.

This is also where we get the shot from inside the church with the broken window. We see Kelly come out and hug Magna, but then still go with Carol. Just really interesting symbolism there about her not giving up hope of finding her sister. I can't help but wonder if Kelly will go with Carol to look for Connie and end up finding Beth. That would be super interesting.

It also reminded me of something that happened during S9. There was an episode where Kelly got lost in the woods and Daryl and Connie went to find her. They had this really weird before-the-opening-credits sequence where we saw what was clearly a Whisperer, rather than a normal walker, coming up behind Kelly and reaching out for her, as though she was about to get kidnapped or taken prisoner. But that didn’t actually happen.

When Daryl and Connie find her, she's on her own in the woods and just dehydrated. There's definitely hallucination quality to that sequence, but I’ve always suspected it was a foreshadow of something in the future. Anyway, this is just conjecture and I'm just rambling, but these are some of the thoughts I had while watching the episode.

The kids:

There couple of charming scenes of all the kids playing together. We see them play a card game—Slap Jack, I think—at the kitchen table. Many people have noticed that this kitchen table looks a lot like the one in Alone that we saw in the funeral home. And no, it’s not the same. It doesn’t have a diamond on it, but the material and pattern look similar. Which is kind of interesting.

Actually, to me, the design looks a little reminiscent of the All-Seeing Eye, which is often seen on paper currency. So, it could be part of that theme.

Most of these are just cute scenes and Angela Kang says that part of the reason for them is that they wanted to have Judith and Herschel interact a little bit. People have also pointed out to me that when Herschel asks if any of them have ever been on the road like he was with Maggie, Judith says no, “Not like that.” Actually, she has been, but she was just too little to remember it. But this may have been a subtle reminder of 5x12.

Herschel is clearly worried about his mom and the adults who keep leaving. Judith does her best to console him. Not sure what to make of these conversations in terms of what they foreshadow. Maybe nothing. But I did enjoy watching the scenes.

Father Gabriel:

The man Gabriel kills is named Nichols. (Got that from the subtitles.) We hear him reciting the Lord's prayer as Gabe approaches. I also noticed that his shoes are not on. They are on the ground on the other side of the tree from where he’s sitting. Which might be part of the Lost Shoe/Foot symbolism.

He has an arrow in his stomach (it looks like Daryl’s) and he’s bleeding from the neck. The neck wounds are interesting because Father Gabriel got one too. It's almost as if these two mirror one another.

I mentioned this yesterday, but Gabriel says, "God is not here anymore." Just wanted to mention it again because it will be important to remember for next week when we get into 11x04.

Okay, I think that's all I have in terms of details. Anything I missed?

Many fans seem to always defend Asami with "well, that's just Asami being Asami", while other characters get a rapist/pervert label for much less. I wondered how you thought about this. I don't feel like the Manga itself is demonstrating such double standards. It's like as Akihito fell in love with him, the rape doesn't count as rape anymore - and that scene, where Asami 'wanted to calm Feilong down' seems to be never regarded as non-con, though Feilong obviously wasn't really into it.

As a fan of Asami myself, I don't know if I would justify his early wrongdoing in this story by saying that "that's Asami being Asami". What I think complicates Asami as a character is that he was not created to be one half of a loving, caring couple: he was created to be the cruel, hot seme in a bondage one shot. The fact is that said one shot was a huge hit and people clamored for more, so Yamane Ayano had to operate some crazy magic to turn that unsympathetic, sadistic bastard into a man that is actually capable of love, and loveable. So far, there is no indication that Asami will ever apologize to Akihito about how their story began, but that doesn't mean that he won't, in the future. If he does, great. If he doesn't, then yes, the burden of Asami's redemption (or lack thereof) will continue to be the readers'. Many of us are not really willing to take such a huge leap of faith, and that's fine. Many of us were also unwilling to do so with Fei Long for 9/10 of the Naked Truth Arc, even if he had "good reason" to act like a resentful, scornful sob.

I agree with you that Asami "calmed" Fei Long down without his consent, and that is probably one of the most controversial things in Finder. The men in this story hardly ever consented to the sexual acts they performed until very recently. Akihito, for the longest time, didn't give Asami (or Fei Long, or Sudou, or Mikhail, or Yuri, or anyone that ever touched his body), the consent to do so. Yet, he is portrayed to be aroused nearly every time, usually under the "excuse" that either he is enjoying what Asami is doing to him, or he is thinking of Asami when others abuse him, which I find very disturbing because it communicates that his body is giving consent even if he, verbally, isn't. It is all very messed up, but yaoi is not exactly the place where one should expect to find realistic gay relationships. As it is, Finder and the vast majority of works within the gender are written by women to satisfy the fantasies of other women, meaning that they will, more often than not, fetishize people and situations that tend to be very controversial.

Sakazaki, is he a perv? I think he is, even though he is probably the one man that only did what he did to Akihito after Akihito consented (THE IRONY OF IT, Y'ALL!!!) Is Sudou a rapist? I would say that yes he is, because he forced Akihito to perform a sexual act without consent, even if there was no penetration. Is Fei Long a rapist? Yes. Asami? Yes. Mikhail is no saint either: what he did to Akihito in the Naked Truth arc was abusive as well. No one gets to touch another person sexually without consent or humiliate them and come out as virtuous. They all suck. They all make morally questionable decisions. Now, depending on the level of affection fans have for one character or another, they will be willing to tolerate more or less of that improper behavior, and that's when "double standards" start popping up.

I guess that is the difficulty we all face: being impartial. I will forever pick Asami over Sakazaki, even if Asami's violence against Akihito was greater. Likewise, to me, Fei Long's violence against Akihito will be forever worse than anything Asami ever did - again, an entirely subjective view. It's simply how we relate to the characters in a story that tends to have some really ugly, shameful moments.

Shane Dawson has been shown to mock black people on several occasions, saying the n word, doing blackface and creating stereotypical recurring characters.

When beginning on YouTube, Shane had a character called “Shanaynay” who was supposed to be a “ghetto-white girl”. When playing her, Shane often used ghetto stereotypes. She was a recurring character from 2008-2011. Although he has long stopped playing this character, he was continuing to sell the merch and profit off his racism as recently as last year!

He has also done blackface in his character skits, and said the n word as Shanaynay. On one of these occasions, he called an actual black woman a “n*gga bitch monkey woman”. Watch the full video for all occasions.

He has probably done this even more than his blackface, and that’s saying something.

This clip, which went around last year, contains him calling a 6-year-old child sexy and admitting to googling CP. This is from his Shane and Friends podcast, which contains a lot of explicit clips.

He has also asked his teenage fan to “show herself” and “shut up and twerk”. This is from 3:55 - 4:29 in this video.

One of the instances really going around on Twitter at the moment is him pretending to jerk off to a picture of the then-11 year old Willow Smith.

A reminder that her family has not forgiven him, so neither should you!

Shane Dawson has promoted and supported terrible people and channels.

This has been a long-time criticism of his viral documentary series, but it is still important to remember.

Let’s start with the problems with this in chronological order. 

His first viral documentary series was The Truth about Tanacon.

Tanacon, to begin with, had several issues. Despite big dreams, it failed spectacularly due to lack of organisation and preparation before the event. There were many last minute changes and it generally lacked several necessities in events. Some issues were disorganised registrations, reserved meet and greets that didn’t go through the system, clashings with VidCon (a bigger event), inappropriate content creators, adversied content creators that didn’t appear, condoms in the goodie bag, lies about free tickets, no food, no room for anything, one hallway, lack of regulation in wristbands, underestimation of guests, overly expensive merch, no cooling system, no fire solutions (meaning they kicked everyone out) and it goes on. 

Despite actual people suffering due to the incompetency of Tana, Shane made her out to be an innocent martyr. This gets even worse as you realise than Tana has been exposed for several racist comments throughout her YouTube career.

Shane is clearly shown to be a terrible interviewer, presenting more as a friend than someone who is willing to find the “truth” of Tanacon. Instead of learning about Tanacon from an unbiased journalist, we get an obscured version of what happened, engineered to sympathise with Tana instead of her admitting to her mistakes.

Yet, this somehow was only the beginning of the problems with the documentary series, as the next one was with Jeffree Starr.

I don’t even know where to begin with the problems with this.

Firstly, Jeffree is perhaps the most problematic YouTuber who is still popular on the website. He has been exposed as racist, sexist, supporting of rapists, terrible to fans, transphobic, ableist, fatphobic, homophobic, insensitive to suicidal people, sexualising of minors, fascist and violent. Check out this thread here for the full details and proof of these claims.

Shane is not stupid. He is aware of these controversies, but has continued to support Jeffree. When a fan called him out, he was extremely rude and was very mad, and supporting all the hate the fan was getting.

The entire documentary series is about him befriending Jeffree, and making him out to be a good person. 

Jeffree should NOT be given a positive platform like this, and he should NOT be continuing to get away with being “cancelled”. So many other YouTubers have been “cancelled” for lesser things, yet Jeffree manages to always get away with it.

The next documentary series was the Jake Paul series. This is perhaps his most controversial documentary series.

Shane is not a therapist, a psychiatrist or a mental health professional. Even though he did consult some people, they are not allowed to diagnose people based on suspicions and videos. Yet, throughout the entire series, he calls Jake Paul a sociopath, and using that label to justify everything he has done.

Jake and Logan have both stirred up some of the biggest controversies on the platform, yet Shane gave them the ability to thrive. Like he did with Tana and Jeffree, he humanised him and edited it to the audience would sympathise with Jake. He has been exposed to scam his young fans, been rude to his neighbours and cast members, made light of serious disorders like anxiety, saying the n word and doing several things for clout, such as “marrying” Tana Mongeau.

As addressed in the documentary series, Alissa Violet, Jake’s ex-girlfriend, has shared her stories of physical abuse in the Team 10 mansion in private life, yet Shane did not fully address this or even mention this to Jake in the episode after. This further proves that Shane is incapable of running a documentary series with such deep themes as he will gloss over them or not address them properly.

This issue is further seen in his documentary with Eugenia Cooney.

A warning that I have not actually seen this as I have heard it contains triggering subject material which I do not wish to subject myself to in interests for my personal mental health - I am only going off the statements of experts and viewers.

In theory, this documentary could have been brilliant. After all, it is two people who have gone/is going through eating disorders and discussing it. However, experts have said that this could be harmful and it is easy to see why.

As much as I do not like Shane, I, and experts, do believe that he had good intentions behind this documentary. However, it probably would have been better if they consulted an expert regularly throughout the documentary when handling a touchy subject. After all, many of Shane’s viewers are young and/or influential, and a correct portrayal of a subject which is terrifying and real to many people watching is very important.

Experts who spoke with INSIDER — and who have not personally treated Cooney — are wary of considering Cooney's treatment a success story.

"When we are in the midst of our eating disorder we are very, very good at wearing masks. We're very good at playing a role that is very convincing and wants to let people know that we're okay," Chevese Turner, the Chief Strategy & Policy Officer for the National Eating Disorders Association, told INSIDER."A month of treatment is just barely scratching the surface of the road to recovery. While she put on a good face and was very chipper and cheerful, I'm not convinced that's what's going on inside. How do any of us know for sure?"

While both experts told INSIDER they believe Dawson had good intentions, they also expressed numerous concerns with the way the video presented the reality of eating disorders, and Cooney's recovery in particular. Turner says having Cooney share her story could be very cathartic, but she worries how much of her appearance was intended to resurrect or preserve her career."What's essentially happening is that people are bullying her online for her looks and her body and that does have an impact, it impacts all of us when that happens. For someone with an eating disorder, the impact can be devastating. I think [Dawson is] trying to help in his own way, but probably the thing that would help the most is her having more time in recovery," Turner said.

"I don't want to speculate, but obviously her success on YouTube is a driving factor to get back to work. None of us know if she's fully capable for that work and I would want to believe that the people around her who care about her most are confident that she can handle it," she continued. "I hope that they'll encourage her to take a break."

Overall, it has been shown that Shane is unfit to handle a documentary series with his evidently extremely biased views, and he should consult more professionals when editing. Although many people would argue that he has good intentions, it is possible to have good intentions while being irresponsible. Shane is aware of his large audience, and his influence over people around the globe. He should be more careful when creating a video with strong themes which many viewers may be suffering through or offended by. 

Either than his documentary series, Shane is also friends with other problematic people outside it - most infamously, Trisha Paytas. 

Trisha Paytas’ brand has become being extremely controversial. However, this doesn’t excuse that she has done and should not normalise her behaviours. She has been proved to be very transphobic and homophobic, as well as racist, ableist, abusive and insensitive to people with mental illnesses and disorders, notably DID. She lives to stir up drama on YouTube and more recently, TikTok. Despite being aware of this, Shane has continued to be close friends with her and excusing what she does because she’s just Trisha.

He has also openly supported far-right people on Twitter, giving harmful conspiracies a platform on his channel.

Shane Dawson has contributed to destroying growing/popular channels.

When 20-year-old growing YouTuber Bobby Burns released a video giving valid criticism to Shane Dawson, Shane featured him on his channel and pushed him as a heater.

This was not a thing which only happened once. Shane decided to continue to feature him on his channel, branding him as a hater. However, Shane’s dedicated fanbase did not like this and began to send hate to Bobby. Due to the lack of popularity, Shane stopped interacting with Bobby and didn’t feature him in any more videos without attempting to “save his career” like he has done with so many other people.

That is not to say that Bobby is faultless. I am not that familiar with his content, but I have heard that he did contribute to his channel’s demise, which makes sense. However, as a huge content creator, it was irresponsible of Shane to take a growing channel and brand him as a negative hater. He is aware of his audience, and that is important to remember. When he has such a large fanbase, he needs to be more careful with the videos he is showing them, and the characterisations of YouTubers.

However, what Shane is going under fire most recently is his involvement in the James Charles scandal last year.

Despite denial, Shane has been proved to play an important role in the “cancelling” of James last year, encouraging Tati to upload the video and making false accusations of predatory behaviour. This was highly likely done to degrade a competitor’s palette so his collaboration with Jeffree would be more successful.

Recently, he posted these screenshots on Twitter and then deleted the Tweet.

This proves his blatant immaturity. Somehow, James, the youngest of the four YouTubers involved in the scandal, has grown up the most. Shane was a part of the downfall of James, causing him to debate suicide. His defence for this was saying that he “needed to be served a slice of humble pie the size of the fucking Empire State Building”.

James Charles is not faultless, and he should not be made out to be an angel or a martyr in this situation. However, no one deserves to have suicidal thoughts, and anyone who defends this by saying that it was the humbling he needed is disgusting.

Shane Dawson attempted to out Dan and Phil for views and clout.

As a bisexual man who has opened up about his fear of being outed when he was closeted, he should be ashamed of everything he did to Dan and Phil.

Like many YouTubers at the time, Shane used the Phandom to get views and subscribers. In doing this, he objectified and sexualised Dan to his young and influential audience. Check out this video where he said that he wanted to facefuck Dan in an orgy while watching a video where he just turned 18. In that clip, he also split up Dan and Phil into “cute” and “not cute”. 

It even went to the point where he asked the Psychic Twins about the sexuality of Dan and Phil. In this clip, he accuses them of queerbaiting as well as supporting the Psychic Twins’ invasive and insensitive comments about them not dressing gay enough, diss of them refusing to go on their podcast and outing and stereotyping them. This was as recent as 2017.

So what from here? Shane has released an apology video, but words don’t mean anything without action. Here are some suggestions for what he could do to actually show further improvement.

He could stop doing conspiracy videos in the harmful and biased style he is known for, and delete his videos despite the views.

He could stop being friends with such toxic and controversial people.

He could donate his money and time to helping out the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and to black charities/organisations in general. It does not negate what he has done, and it is not in my place to forgive him if he does do that, but it would represent his improvement.

He could formally apologise to the parents and the family of the children he has sexualised.

But he will probably not do that. However, as a hater of cancel culture, I hope that he does improve as a person. It is not my goal to send hate, but to inform people. Sending Shane death threats or insensitive comments are the last things we need. To criticise him for doing that, then doing it yourself is hypocritical and harmful. Instead, we’ll just have to inform ourselves and wait for the future.

The Director’s Series: Gaspar Noé

The director series will consist of me concentrating on the filmography of all my favorite directors. I will rank each of their films according to my personal taste. I hope this project will provide everyone with quality recommendations and insight into films that they might not have known about. Today’s director in spotlight is Gaspar Noé

#5 - I Stand Alone (1998) Runtime: 1 hr 33 min   Aspect Ratio: 2.66 : 1             Film Format: 16mm

A horse meat butcher's life and mind begins to breakdown as he lashes out against various factions of society while attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter.             Verdict: A promising debut, and an extremely shocking one at that. Noé builds upon his short film Carne, and this is a fully realized extension. I Stand Alone is a nihilistic depiction of an unhinged societal outcast. It spews just as much as hate as all of Noé’s other works, but isn’t exactly something I ever cared to return to.

#4 - Climax (2018) Runtime: 1 hr 37 min   Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1             Film Format: Ari Alexa Mini Digital

Young dancers gather in a remote and empty school building to rehearse on a cold and wintry night. The all-night celebration soon turns into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn that their sangria is laced with LSD. 

Verdict: One of Noé’s most admired works - both critically and with audiences. While I do consider it one of his lesser works, there is no denying the technical mastery instilled into every sequence. The first half of Climax is essentially a music video before the credits began to flash on-screen - that's when the truly interesting portion of this film begins. The camera work succeeded in being extremely nauseating and unsettling. All the while there is a constant barrage of wails and deep guttural crying that loops incessantly in the background. It truly does feel like a nightmare or the recesses of hell.

#3 - Love (2015) Runtime: 2 hr 15 min   Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1             Film Format: Red Epic Dragon Digital

Murphy is an American living in Paris who enters a highly sexually and emotionally charged relationship with the unstable Electra. Unaware of the seismic effect it will have on their relationship, they invite their pretty neighbor into their bed. 

Verdict: Love isn’t the first film to depict real life sexual intercourse instead of simulated intercourse, and it won’t be the last. Love is the type of film that a film such as Nymphomaniac wanted itself to be. Although the main character is pretty despicable, and sometimes pathetic, what else could we expect from a demented auteur such as Noé? Most of the neon splashed shots are static and don’t cut away as we watch the characters tug and toss and make love in bed. The images become hypnotizing and every frame looks like a painting come to life – oozing both color and various bodily fluids. Even though the sex scenes are extremely explicit in nature, they never really seem to be in bad taste. There is a great sense of tenderness in each of them.

#2 - Irreversible (2002) Runtime: 1 hr 37 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1           Film Format: 16mm & 35mm

Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in the underpass. Her boyfriend and ex-lover take matters into their own hands by hiring two criminals to help them find the rapist so that they can exact revenge. A simultaneously beautiful and terrible examination of the destructive nature of cause and effect, and how time destroys everything. 

Verdict: One of the most impressive cinematic achievements of the 21st century - both on a technical and a storytelling level. I saw this film for the first time at sixteen years old, and I was forever desensitized to any other film that came after. Irreversible is one of the hardest films I have ever sat through in my life. I don’t even show it to friends who say they like extreme films. Benoît Debie’s camerawork is masterful and disorienting. Noé also makes some pretty genius directorial decisions with this project. Since the film is told in reverse chronological order, the ending is shown as the intro and the beginning is the last shot. This makes it a puzzle of trauma that needs to be fit together. Noé depicts sexual assault in an unforgiving manner by sitting on a static shot of the act for close to ten minutes. He wants to depict the act as it truly is - one of the utmost worst things you could do to another human being.

#1 - Enter the Void (2009) Runtime: 2 hr 41 min Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1           Film Format: 16mm & 35mm

This psychedelic tour of life after death is seen entirely from the point of view of Oscar, a young American drug dealer and addict living in Tokyo with his prostitute sister, Linda. When Oscar is killed by police during a bust gone bad, his spirit journeys from the past – where he sees his parents before their deaths – to the present – where he witnesses his own autopsy – and then to the future, where he looks out for his sister from beyond the grave. 

Verdict: Enter the Void is without a doubt Noé’s finest work to date as an experimental filmmaker. It also holds the title as one of the most psychedelic films ever made, top five in my opinion no doubt. Regardless of the “trippy” label, this film is perfectly crafted in general. Very few filmmakers have dared attempt to depict a soul’s journey through death, and very few have actually been able to stick the landing. Noé took inspiration from the Tibetan Book of the Dead and crafted an experiential film all told from the main character’s POV. While not a “found footage film” in any way, instead the camera lens acts as the protagonist’s field of vision and we are with him every step of his journey. Enter the Void is a kaleidoscopic, mind-melting, disassociating journey of neon light through the abyss of Tokyo which is depicted as some sort of candy colored netherworld. Noé’s most human work he has ever made, and probably will ever make.

"Mha is morally grey" and "the hero commission/heroes are the real villains" are contradictory statements. There is moral greyness in Mha but then they paint the morally grey things as evil and then the evil things as morally grey..... So is there one evil to blame all the problems on or is it all morally grey? Which is it? It just shows they don't want a morally grey story and don't even know what it means. They just slap the label onto whatever they want to justify.

I’ve had an anon openly admit to me they just stan mass murderers, and I mean, good on you for admitting it I guess. There isn’t anything wrong with enjoying morally bad characters. Just admit you like it, though. Admit that you understand they’re morally wrong and move on. You’re wasting your time trying to justify everything and if anything, it just makes you look a little wacky, honestly. 

Not every character is meant to have justifiable reasons for their actions. We would never have good villains in anything if everything they did was justified. The fascination and interest in characters like that is ...Why? Why did they do it? What was the reason?

And ya know, sometimes, there isn’t a reason. There isn’t some deeper hidden meaning or trauma that led to it. Sometimes characters are just psychopaths, and there is nothing wrong with that, but don’t try to make excuses for their actions cause that’s not where it’s at. Admit they’re murderous psychos and enjoy your day. 

And about the heroes really being the villains is such a ridiculous take, to be honest. Heroes are also human, and I feel like people forget that. They get so hooked up on the title of Hero, that they think these people need to be the most perfect, example setting, morally righteous beings and that’s just...not it.

They’re still human, and that’s what I love about Hori’s writing. He explores this humanity, and puts us in these positions of really looking at these characters and thinking about them in deeper contexts. 

Like with Hawks, who was pushed into the role of a killer, because it was either take down Twice or risk losing thousands of more lives. It was also his own life on the line, because he was crammed between handling Dabi AND Twice. So not only was he trying to save innocent lives, but he was fighting for his own life. 

I don’t personally believe that murder can’t be justified. If a woman killed her rapist, I see that as perfectly justifiable. If a person kills another for attacking them, their family, or loved ones with the intention to kill, I see that as perfectly justifiable. 

So putting that into the context of Hawks, I believe his killing of Twice was justifiable, but the Villains actions of rampaging through a city killing thousands of innocent people that have done nothing wrong and were clueless to all of this anyway, that is not and will never be justifiable. 

These are my personal feelings, but I don’t see MHA as a very morally grey piece of work. It makes us think about right and wrong, for sure, but I just don’t think it fits into the category of morally grey. Everyone still has their set roles. The heroes are still doing good by definition, and the villains are still doing bad by definition. We haven’t seen much crossing over on either end, so we haven’t delved into morally grey territory. 

But that’s my take on it.

If you’re still answering questions about your outlast opinions I was wondering how you feel about Val? I think they have a lot of wasted potential and the in game mystery about their gender has unfortunate implications anyway you look at it but I was wondering your thoughts?

First I’m always open to talk about Outlast for forever all the time any time.

Second, oh boy do I have opinions on Val.

You mostly summed it up pretty well though. I feel like one of Outlast 2′s biggest pitfalls besides the story being a garbage fire, is that none of the villains were all that memorable when compared back to the base game and DLC. I personally feel like there were too many villains and none of them were given enough time to really shine and make a lasting impression.

With the base game, you have characters like Chris Walker, the constant threat that follows you everywhere and who you have a few really intense encounters with who dies in a spectacular way to showcase an even bigger immediate threat to your safety, the Walrider. There’s Trager, who had a short amount of screen time, but is bursting with personality and has quite a few notes and documents to really indicate who he was as a person. (fuck off comics for doing him a dirty). And that’s really... it, for base game bad guys. They’re effective and don’t overstay their welcome. The DLC kind of has a similar feel, there’s Frank, the cannibal who serves as the first real threat and blood-pumper. You encounter him a few times then he goes away... kind of weak but also kind of scary because there’s this lingering tension that he could come back and continue his chase. Then there’s Eddie Gluskin. The character that flips the table and instills in men the same fear that most women have with abusive men. It’s so satisfying to watch reactions to Eddie’s segments in the game because he makes men uncomfortable. Waylon is hobbled, and pursued by a man who wants to do horrible things to him, use him as an incubator for his seed. You’re called a slut, a whore, by a (for Outlast standards) nice looking man in a suit with an appealing voice. It’s great. Eddie’s section is great horror.

Now there’s Outlast 2. A game I think suffers from pacing issues and the fact that it’s just... too long. And there’s far too many antagonists. I love the idea of the dueling “factions”. The cult lead by Knoth and the counter cult lead by Val. That idea is neat. That Val was cast out and makes their own group of... zealots of sorts. If I wasn’t hellbent on rewriting most of the plot, I would say that that aspect should stay. It’s interesting. But the game never really gives you a chance to get to know Val and their counter cult, because they’re too busy giving you Knoth, Marta, Loutermilch, Nick and Laird, and general townspeople to avoid.

None of the villains are given enough screen time to really shine, and none of their single encounters are really stand out worthy. This is combined with the way that none of the villains die or are removed as a threat in a satisfying way. There’s no visceral joy like when Eddie is strung up and impaled by his own actions. The deaths in Outlast 2 just aren’t... equivalent to that, I feel. There isn’t an emotional catharsis and even Blake’s ending when compared to Miles’ falls a bit short. BUT those are critiques of Outlast 2 which wasn’t what this ask was about.

I think Val had the outstanding potential to be a really cool character. However, you also touched on my biggest complaint I have with their character. Way back when Outlast 2 first came out, I was pretty uneasy with the fandom immediately jumping to label Val as a transwoman. There really isn’t anything in canon to “confirm” this, yet it was added to the wiki early on anyways based on headcanons. Which happens with fan run wikis, esp on games with little to no canon to go off of. Red Barrels did not make this any better with their “Val is Val” tweet in response to questions regarding Val’s gender identity. I feel like this was a very, very, weak answer and pretty much a cop out. Either answer they would have given would have gotten them shit, so I can see why they chose the non-answer answer.

My biggest problem with stating that Val is a transwomen comes from the fact that Val is a rapist. They are a sexual abuser. I’m not saying transwomen or trans individuals in general cannot be villains. I would love to see more trans and queer villains who are canonically trans and queer and not just coded that way. HOWEVER. That being said, you have to be really, really, careful of what type of villain you’re doing. I’m a huge supporter of dark fiction, I’ll always defend it, and I’ll defend the right to write fucked up shit in your story. But you need to understand the implications of that fucked up stuff outside of the world you’ve created.

The fact of the matter is that before and during Outlast 2′s production, when it came out, and to this day, there has been a huge push to label real life transwomen as predators. Esp sexual predators. This is a real world issue that affects every transwomen who has ever tried to just exist in peace. So putting a transwomen character in your horror story who is specifically and near exclusively a sexual predator is... not great. Fictional worlds don’t exist in a vacuum. It is deeply important to make sure that you’re not reaffirming negative stereotypes of marginalized people. And Val reaffirms them all. If Val was any other type of villain I think I would like their character a hell of a lot more, instead of avoiding doing anything with them.

You can, of course, still like this character. I’m in no way saying you can’t. I mean shit, I’ve gone to bat for fucking Dr. Wernicke in the first game. But I really wish fandom had slowed down for a half a heartbeat and really thought through what they were implying and what they were accidentally supporting in the mad rush to make Val a transwomen in the popular headcanon. And it’s not all fandom’s fault, Red Barrels 100% wrote in that ambiguity, and they need to really work harder in any new project they do at not repeating this kind of mistake. Have queer villains, go for it, I would love to see it. But make sure you don’t give our community’s enemies more ammo to shoot at us with.

Speaking as someone who has autism and has been in DK for a while.. I've got some tea. And the tea is that the admins have been nothing but kind and welcoming, even more so than other rps I have been in throughout the years of roleplaying. You will most likely not post this, but hey, it needs to be said.

That’s the thing here, you’re all so ready to invalidate the experiences of multiple other people, simply because you had a better experience? I think in the political climate we’re in, we should all know better than to assume that just because you have been somewhere and felt safe, that doesn’t mean that everyone that has been there has been safe. And it’s this very reaction that is why people wouldn’t feel safe talking about why they don’t feel safe in that group. Why would anyone want to speak up about their struggles if all they’re going to be met with is:

Well I’m having a great time so clearly you can’t be having a bad one.

Here are all the ways that you having a problem has ruined everything and should make you feel guilty.

Here are all the ways that you are wrong in your feelings, and in the wrong for stating that there is a problem.

In fact I’m going to kick out the people that stood up for you and list it as “complaining and making an outburst” as the reason for being kicked out.

And because they dared to take one for the team and speak to me about the triggers other people brought to their attention, I’m going to suddenly decide that everything they do in the whole grpc is just to attack me. Now they’re a bad person, because someone asked for help and you’re a bad person for asking for help.

I’m going to kick them out and make sure everyone in the group knows they’re a piece of shit and also shit talk everything else that they do in the grpc-- because despite having my own glee rp, it’s decided that any glee rp they make is obviously an attack against me. 

Clearly, nobody has a problem because I said so and amidst all this, nobody else has complained so.... 

The clear truth is, these two weren’t vilified and kicked out of DK until they started to get an influx of apps on their own roleplay group and the admins made it very clear that they were unhappy that there was another D/s group in the tags. 

I read things myself that were very obvious examples of bullying autistic people for showing autistic traits. I ran these screencaps by people in the community that are also autistic or have learning disabilities and what I was told hurts me to my core. The same things I saw happening in DK happen to them all of the time in roleplays. Maybe people don’t realize it, but it has happened in that group. Maybe you’ll get a better understanding of it all after @disabilityrph comes out with her guide, explaining all of the ways (subtle too) that she and other people with learning disabilities have been bullied in the community. I think you’re forgetting that bulling isn’t just pushing people down physically or being obvious with insults, it’s microaggressions too. It’s having an attitude with autistic players that you don’t have with other people. Bullying can be subtle. You may have been bullied and you didn’t even realize it.

The fact of the matter is, what happened in DevilsKey was M/s activity. It was non con. What would you do if someone raped you and then was like, “Well it only happened once, so why are you calling me a rapist?” The fact of the matter is, it happened, and that makes it an M/s rp. If that is allowed to continue to be part of the plots that people are playing with in their server (aka they are playing out the trauma caused by it), if they are going to allow non con punishments of that nature to happen in the future, then they are an M/s rp and need to be labeled appropriate so that nobody is triggered. If you can’t figure out how to dole out punishments in a way that does not break the rules of D/s by forcing kink and traumatizing people in and out of character, then you don’t belong running a D/s rp. 

Because another fact of the matter is that D/s is used by survivors of trauma as a means to overcome their past. There is no reason at all that anyone should expect non con in a D/s setting. To find it would be triggering to a lot of people. Maybe not you, but that just makes you privileged. We’re not in an era where flaunting your privilege (like you did with this anon) is cute anymore. It’s ugly. 

Another fact of the matter is that people were made to feel upset by one of the admins, and both admins allowed the roleplayers as a group to talk shit about the people who were triggered in the ooc chat. The immediate response should have been to step in and tell them that they needed to stop. There is no reason for someone to point out that people are hurt and then allow a mass attack on those people in the ooc. You were already told that the people that were triggered were feeling too anxious to come forward, so you allowed them to be attacked and proved to all of them why they should never speak to you about anything. Who would want to speak up about being triggered in a group where doing so will only end in them feeling like the whole roleplay is going to hate them by the time they wake up? Look at what you guys did to the two people that did take credit for wanting to make things right. And now me.

All of the stuff that I have seen has happened through my research indicates that there are a lot of things that need to be exposed. There needs to be accountability taken instead of trying to launch a smear campaign against people that did the right thing and stood up to bullies. 

I’m still laughing at that GLEE IS OVER, WHY ARE YOU HERE bullshit. Are you kidding me? Why are you here? It still baffles me that you guys are so privileged and so entitled that you think that you’re the only people that can be honestly and genuinely interested in the glee rp community. Which is why, after seeing your group try to shift the blame on these two people over and over and over again in different ways every time they’re proven to be baseless, I’ve just come to the conclusion that there never was an issue on your side and everything that is being done just proves the absolute lack of maturity that’s going on from your side of things. 

What do I mean by that? Well here’s the timeline of excuses, so far:

They stole DK when they made TDS.

That one player that wrote a Dom character was “too much like a Dom ooc” (which proves you know nothing about D/s if you think that’s an scary offense?)

You mean you have screenshots of people saying they were triggered so we can’t say that didn’t happen? Well they said this was an M/s rp and we’re upset about it.

You mean this is an M/s rp because we have M/s content so it can’t be called D/s without being triggering? Then they made people uncomfortable, we won’t explain how or why because there is none. I’ve read the entire three server’s worth of information through screenshots, I’ve seen these two interacting with people IC and I’ve seen them plotting and joking OOC right up until the point they were kicked out though.

Why would they open a Glee rp anyway? What even is Glee? Who has a Glee rp? Clearly, we’re the only ones that made our own groups innocently. These people purposefully joined our group so that they could make theirs and ruin us! (Nevermind that they have other Glee rps, and those were started months and years ago)

This is what the timeline should have looked like:

Oh, you’re telling me that I have triggered people by not labeling my roleplay group properly? People didn’t feel like they were warned about the content that was going to be in place and taking over all three servers? 

Please, explain that to me because I don’t know if I understand it correctly because I disagree with you-- but you just said people are upset and triggered, so I would like to fully understand with no malice intended, in order to better take care of my roleplay group and the people in it. 

Oh, maybe I don’t want to label it an M/s rp and maybe I personally think you can traumatize people with D/s and have it still be real D/s, but I’m going to stop the plot, take some time to research, and better understand this situation. 

Maybe I still don’t want to label it an M/s rp after doing research on D/s and trauma, because I don’t like the stigma in the glee rp community about it, but what I will do is I will put a more clear label on the main and in the server channels somewhere. That way nobody is surprised by this again, and everyone joining knows what they are getting into. None of the admins wants anyone to be triggered because they don’t expect non con. 

Then a simple addressing the issue post in the announcements channel where they explain that new information has come to your attention that has made you reconsider a few things; that things will be a little different moving forward (either you will do zero non con and never use D/s to traumatize characters or you will put a label that says that excessive force and non con can be used in this group, so it’s not traditional safe, sane, and consensual D/s) but that you know everyone will help you keep things going.

Never out that someone was upset. Never out that you don’t personally agree in the ooc chat, because you don’t want them to feel alienated or as if you didn’t listen to their concern. Don’t allow players to argue the new way of things in the ooc, let players know if they do say anything negative about it that they need to be mindful of other players in the group as well, because everyone has thoughts and feelings. With your secret knowledge that people were triggered, you should have known better than to let people shit talk like that. Your first concern should not have been your plot or your pride, it should have been to focus on the fact that someone was upset and you should have wanted to clearly understand why so that you could fix it. And you definitely shouldn’t have guilted and attacked your players for not being comfortable coming to you ooc. Yeah, that would be the goal and hope, but it’s not their fault that you make them uncomfortable. Trying to make it out to be their fault and attacking them for it is only going to make people even more uncomfortable with you. 

And the “outbursts” from those two players? I read it. They screencapped it when it happened, because they had been warned that they might be removed for speaking up about their friends being triggered. They said nothing wrong. Everything they said was right. One of them very politely said what I just said the admin should have, which was that nobody should be trying to make anyone else feel invalidated by hopping into the group chat to talk about how they didn’t feel uncomfortable so it was preposterous that anyone else might be. She asked people to use more inclusive language, to remember that whatever they feel... it was obvious that other people felt differently. It was obvious that people were hurting. And the other player explained how it was traumatic to people to mislabel something as D/s and when your main says “safe, sane, and consensual” but you allow NON CONSENSUAL, that it’s triggering because that makes non con unexpected. Which it is. Very much so. I think the reaction from everyone outside of Devils Key should prove that. Non con should not have to be on the banned kink list in a D/s rp because non con is already banned by the basic rules of RACK and the very phrase they put on their main. 

You can’t say a person will have a “safe, sane, and consensual” experience and then attach electrical currents to their genitals while you rape them anally for hours and damage their physical health by pouring something that’s very nearly poisonous down their throat for hours while they’re naked in the middle of town square, with a bunch of other people who are also getting non consensually abused for a full week. 

I don’t know how much clearer I can be on that. I don’t know why it wasn’t clear in the first place. The fact that bringing this up to the admins is what started this all is mind blowing. How are you going to kick people out of your roleplay for letting you know that people were triggered? How are you going to kick people out of your roleplay because they have their own group that was made in 2017? Admins are allowed to remove people at their own discretion, but this isn’t just kicking people out. This is purposefully slandering and bullying people because they dared to tell you that you had hurt people and because they dared to love the same glee rp community that we are all still trying to thrive in and THAT is DISGUSTING. 

The fact that YOU have a good time there, does not negate all of the negative experiences of other people.

a little on the context in which these accusations are being made, which i believe to be deeply relevant. read it, if you will— i frankly care more about whether people take the accusations themselves seriously, so if you read anything, read about that, but the following may matter to you if i matter to you. me going into the accusations goes first though. scroll down. this isn’t that important or urgent.

the prevalent theme here seems to be that my problems with eris had no bearings on the other interpersonal conflicts going on at the time. this is true so long as you do not enter a more holistic perspective on everything that was going on at the same time. allow me to explain.

time and time again, any attempt on my end to advocate for myself or protest a violation of my boundaries was treated as an offense in itself, and a threat to others which warranted eventually throwing me out. it wasn’t a dispute that was privately handled, it was a series of violations which ended with me being shuffled out when i sought support from a close friend about it, who found out on her own, by accident, who i was talking about despite me keeping things anonymous. ultimately, the response of everyone in this situation, constantly, when i tell them “i feel violated and unsafe” was not to take responsibility, but to freak out about a girlfriend at me who would perform the next cascading step of the pattern above. consent guides have poor things to say about people whose response to a boundary violation being pointed out engage in this kind of emotional incontinence rather than to take responsibility, i believe.

going back to an older phrasing, let's speak about the ways in which i 'made people feel unwelcome', which factually were...

...me telling eris that at the end of a mutually harmful dalliance, i no longer felt safe or comfortable with them and that while we can and should continue to share the same groups, i don’t want her to contact me directly or to use group conversations with the explicit purpose of using them as a vehicle to solicit me. this ended with her jackie invoking the language of disposability to treat me as some awful, isolating aggressor simply for stopping an intimate relationship i no longer wanted, which as you can see, she’s still doing.

...a conversation in which i explicitly said that while the extremely duplicitous sexual association i had with jackie in which she invited a constant unidirectional stream of nudes from my side as part of some weird inclination on her part to 'fix' me or to 'help' me because i was so lonely at the time was not like what my rapist did, it did leave me feeling vulnerable, objectified, humiliated, which was promptly answered not even by her, but by her girlfriend bryn telling me that i compared her to my rapist — when i explicitly did not! — that it was unfair of me to put that on her even if i didn’t, who browbeated me into taking responsibility for both things i didn’t do and things which both of them actually admitted were not my fault, until i was sufficiently submissive and completely ceded my ability to set boundaries or to say that things which hurt me, hurt me, which set the tone for ‘mediation’ (which bryn, for reasons unclear to me had explicitly decided to make her task) from that point on.

these events were chained together, and together they drew lines and set rules in a way that related to and exacerbated each other mutually— it would make sense that the resentment and frustration inherent to this approach which left me entirely powerless, i did my best to abide with it and take responsibility for my own actions nonetheless (although my efforts were as consistently rejected as they were demanded of me). i did this because my principles and sexual ethics (as an application of my interpersonal ethics) demand it, even if obviously the fact that i was expected to do so while what happened to me was framed as unimportant and not meaningfully a result of the choices people made — while i was made responsible for things i did not even do and things that could not reasonably be framed as a result of anything i did — could never have led to anything except where we are now and was, honestly, a fucking insane way to approach a situation in which mutual harm was done.

at the end of the day we can say this much: on the basis of one person finding out on their own that jackie did to me what she did as i sought support about the traumatising things that happened to me and choosing (on her own accord, with me asking her not to) to sever ties with her, jackie (and her girlfriends) assumed that i was perpetuating the exact kind of toxic character assassinations they themselves constantly performed to make sure that the ways in which people assaulted my boundaries were never honestly examined. then they deemed it right to publicly name me for this, and when told that this was not only unfounded but also a harmful thing to accuse someone of in itself, these people doubled down in a way that conveniently left out everything they themselves did even though i always conceded that i did have a role in everything bad that happened and did my best to make amends even way beyond my personal responsibility.

these accusations are, when taken together — even as a very small part of them are valid and true — now factually part of a larger dynamic to both erase the boundary violations committed towards me and to deny me the ability to even privately process them with my friends, whether this was the explicit intent or not— although i find the methods that are being consistently chosen to handle all of this extremely suspect, especially coming from a self-labeled anti-disposability, anti-callout, anti-whisper crowd.

Just in case I haven’t made my stance clear enough, I wanted to lay a few things on the table. 

Tumblr is cancer, and the entire anti movement even more so. No one on this website knows how to do research and instead prefers just to make up their own definitions, spouting them as truth. Fujoshi does not mean what you think it means. Fujoshi are not inherently bad people. They’re in their right to ship whatever they can conceive. As it has recently been brought to my attention, let me also say that lolicon does not mean what you think it means. Loli consent is literally the worst case of Western bullshit I’ve ever seen. Its shorthand for lolita complex. Which by the way, Lolita is a name. There is nothing inherently sexual about the name. Its been twisted by trigger happy morons, but the lipstick or the fashion? Absolutely nothing to do with pedophilia in any way shape or form. 

As a fandom old, I like and support “bad ships” because I have the brain capacity to wrap my head around the fact that these are fictional characters, not real people. If Inuyasha aired today, everyone would be having a fit about not only the Kagome x Inuyasha ship (15 year old human female x 50+ year old half-dog demon) but also the hugely popular Sesshomaru x Rin pairing (god only knows how old dog demon x 10~ year old human female). That being said ...

My favorite Golden Kamuy pairing is Ogata x Asirpa (30+ year old man x 13 year old girl) and thats just the fucking facts. I like it. A lot. Its a good pairing. 

I have no qualms about people shipping age gaps, whether legal (Endeavor x Hawks) or with minors involved (see above).

I have no qualms with people shipping incest. I’ve read a LOVELY Endeavor x Shoto series that was very cathartic for me regarding my own trauma and I’ve read plenty of BLmatsu fics as well. And to be honest with you? Incest isn’t even bad in real life, so long as its not rape. If a 25 year old man consented to having sex with his 22 year old sister? Its a non issue. 

I harbor rape fantasies (being on the receiving end) as does a significant portion of the female populace. Stories about noncon or dubcon are not bad things. The people who read and write them are not bad. Its SUCH a prevalent fantasy that a published book written by a female author I’m currently reading wrote a staged rape scene. No trigger warnings. No notes that said “just so everyone knows, rape is not okay”. No deflecting comments to make sure that the reader knows shes not romanticizing it. The scene literally just IS. 

Multishipping is not an endorsement for cheating (something else that was recently brought to my attention, much to my disgust). If someone wants to write about a female character fucking the ENTIRE male cast behind their backs, thats their prerogative and its really not that deep. Cheating in real life is bad because real people get hurt in the process. Fictional characters cheating on fictional characters is angst fuel. Plain and simple. 

Any ship being labeled a “bad ship” is fanwank and nothing more. 

Trying to tell people how they can and cannot enjoy their fictional media is wrong, and every anti should truly be ashamed of themselves for making people feel bad over something that doesn’t even exist. 

I was raped by a father figure from the time I was 11 until I was 18 and I can assure you without a shadow of a doubt that there is absolutely nothing in shipping or fandom that even comes close to the real thing. Equating the two is honestly offensive to anyone whose actually been in that position and I honestly, truly believe that every anti who says they were abused in some fashion or another is lying. Because anyone whose really been there knows that fictional works on the internet are of so little consequence it doesn’t even ping on the radar. Its harmless. Real life though?

And no partaking in these things does not magically turn you into a rapist or a pedophile or anything of the sort. The man who took advantage of me for YEARS didn’t wake up one day and decide to fuck his 11 year old stepdaughter because he read a fucking incest fic on FF.N. He was raped when he was a child and the cycle of abuse continued. 

Media effects reality but not the way you think it does. The power of suggestion only works enough to convince you that you need the newest Iphone or you’ll literally die. It does not somehow make you believe that real rape or real pedophilia is fine and dandy. It just does not work like that and anyone who thinks contrary needs to seek professional help ASAP. No amount of rape fic or lolicon doujins is going to make me go out and rape real children. Period. 

Oh, and for the record? Theres nothing wrong with ageing up characters either. I don’t see the point (refer to this entire post) but if it makes someone else happy then so be it. They’re not pedophiles for wanting to age up a fictional character they have a crush on so THEY’RE more comfortable, especially considering that said fictional character will always be 15 in canon. Like these fucking mental gymnastics are astounding. Literally pump the brakes for five seconds and think about this. 

If I had the power to magically warp into every anti’s house, or just anyone who believed any of the above “Bad Things” were true, I’d honestly kill every single one of them. Like, no joke. You’re a waste of space. You’re a waste of oxygen. No one loves and no one is ever going to love you with that attitude.

What trope(s) do you dislike the most?

Well, I already said omegaverse, which might be my most hated. And yet it also exists as one of those tropes/settings I feel like I would like if I wrote it, my own way.

I also hate ““genderswaps”” for a couple reasons. People will take, say, a cis male character and change him into a cis female character and call it a “genderswap”, that male character as a female character will now be generically young, skinny, and pretty and showing way more skin than the male character ever did which is very boring, and sometimes people “genderswap” half of a same-sex couple to make it straight, which fills me with rage.

This one I’ve seen crop up more in manga and stuff than fanfics or w/e, but, dubcon that’s not labeled/acknowledged as dubcon. Like, the one character going “no, stop, don’t”, other character keeps going, first character is shown to “enjoy” it and everything is totally fine when it’s all over. Some overlap here, so I’ll mention it too; when a character falls in love with their rapist and we’re supposed to be rooting for this couple, even though that one character is totally a rapist like wtf that’s not okay. Very unfortunate a couple of my favorite mangas fall into this category.

I’m not sure what else. Most tropes and stuff I’m neutral about or it’s not common enough for me to pick it out as a “I hate this and wish it stopped happening so much” and I don’t spend much time thinking about the stuff that I hate.
