“Hyung, we've been walking for like hours” Jisung complained. Chan rolled his eyes, it hadn't even been thirty minutes.

They were currently in Chicago for Lollapalooza. The festival was tomorrow so the boys were doing their own things, being tourists. Chan was with Jisung who was already trying to get Chan to buy him a coffee. Luckily for him, there was a shop up ahead that said "Eggy's coffee", so he would be able to shut the kid up.

Chan sucked his teeth. “We'll get you your coffee, Jisung-ah. There's a coffee shop right there.”

Jisung made happy noises, losing all the tiredness that he was portraying making Chan shake his head.

Dina had this coffee shop for about three years, so the decorations were to her liking. There were lots of anime posters around and it had a overall cool vibe to it. Most of her regulars around knew her as Eggy, that's what she went by. Only some people, close people knew her as Dina. Like her staff for instance; Jazzy, Shanda and Bee. They were all close friends after working together for three years—except Jazzy, she's been working here for two years.

Dina wiped down the counters, today was a bit slow. They only had five people come in, but it was still pretty early—it being 9 am—so it was fine.

“Shanda, could you refill the sugar packets on table three?” Dina asked, still wiping the counter.

“On it, Egg.”

Bee and Jazzy were in the back, baking muffins, croissants and fruit tarts. They didn't have many baked goods since this placed was solely based on coffee but it was nice to have a few things.

Dina had finished wiping the counter when the little bell indicating customers rang. She wiped her hands on her cute Rengoko apron. All the staff had to wear Demon Slayer themed aprons, it was required. Dina looked up and almost froze when she saw the man in front of her. Wow... That was an understatement... Who was this pretty Korean man and why did he have to look like he stepped off a cover of a magazine? And he looked like he worked out. Damn, God are you trying to make me kill myself? Dina blinked remembering that time did not stop when this man walked in.

“Welcome to Eggy's coffee, I'm Eggy. What could I get for you two?” She tried to speak as pleasant as possible. But it was quite difficult when someone so attractive suddenly came in with no warning and now you have to try to keep your voice as even as possible.

“Ehm. One moment, please.” He smiled softly. Damn she just melted. She took note of his accent. Australian, perhaps?

He turned to his friend, or possible partner? She wasn't homophobic that's for sure. He spoke to him in a language which she assumed was Korean. His friend had a slight smug look, she could only wonder why.

Chan and Jisung entered the coffee shop. It was decorated in anime posters, two sofas with different anime pillows and Jojo bizarre adventure themed rug. This place was so Jisung, he could already feel the excitement bouncing off Jisung.

There was a woman in a Shinobu themed apron, refilling the sugar packet despenser at a nearby table. Chan had only knew it was Shinobu because he watched a couple episodes of Demon Slayer with Felix.

Jisung was staring around, he was probably in heaven right now.. Chan noticed another woman, working at the counter. Her apron was Rengoko themed. He couldn't help but watch as she wiped her hands on her apron. There was something about her that was drawing him in.. She was quite pretty. Him and Jisung head up to the counter and Chan got a closer look and realized pretty was a whole understatement, she was beautiful. Her box braids had beads at the ends, matching her apron completely. He thought that the apron complimented her dark skin perfectly. He could of stared at her all day but she spoke up.

“Welcome to Eggy's coffee, I'm Eggy. What can I get you two?” She spoke making him remember that they were here to order some coffee and not stare at pretty women.

“Ehm. One moment, please.” He smiled awkwardly. He turned to Jisung who gave him a teasing grin. Jisung had definitely caught the way he looked her, totally mesmerized..

“What do you want?” He asked in Korean.

“What's with that look?” Jisung raised his eyebrows a bit, in a teasing way.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know what I'm talking about.”

“Dude, shut up. You have to choose something. Wait why am I even bothering?” He remembered that Jisung was fluent enough to order himself a coffee. “Order yourself.”

He turned back to the woman who was watching them curiously. He was kinda glad she didn't understand.

“Uhm sorry about that..” Chan said sheepishly. His ears felt red. They probably were..

“No, you're good.”

Chan turned to Jisung, who still had that look on his face.

“Hello, Can I have a iced caramel latte?”

Chan usually was one to get an Expresso but today he was willing to try something different.

“What do you recommend?” Maybe it was just a sorry excuse to get her to talk again...

Dina was a little surprised to hear the other guy speak in a British accent. She hadn't been expecting that.

She was kind of put on the spot when he asked her what she would recommend. Um. She started to panic inside.

“Cloud matcha latte?” Her voice sounded so uncertain. Why was Bee's go to the first to come to mind?

And, it was like the mention of her favorite coffee summoned her or something; Bee came from the back, surprisingly no flour on her Muichiro apron like she usually had. Her hair was pulled back in a half up due. She raised her eyebrows and tilted her head, a way of asking if Dina needed any help. Dina slightly nodded. She quickly told Bee to make an iced caramel latte. She turned back to the two men.

“Or I can suggest a frosty vanilla bean latte.” That was her go to.

“Which one's your favorite?” Was he flirting with her? It was like his dark brown eyes were dazzling her. Oh my gosh. Maybe I should just kill myself right here right now.

“Frosty vanilla bean latte..” Dina basically murmured. Get a grip girl.

“Then I'll have one of those.” He smiled. He looked so cute. She noticed one of his dimples was more prominent than the other, extra cute.

“Sure.. Name for order?” She remembered to ask. She could literally forget how to do her job since this man was making her feel fuzzy.

“Chris.” He answered. It suited him quite well.

“And would that be together or separate?” Dina asked, moving closer to the register.

“I'll pay for both.” Dina put in the price.

“That'll be fourteen eightie-five. Cash or card?”

“Card.” He pulled out his wallet, pulling out a credit card. He held it out to her and she took it. She also took note of his arm, she could see the vains popping out a bit... Oh wow now she was wet. Not good.

She couldn't help but look at name on the card, Chahn Bahng. That was his Korean name, Chris was his English name she assumed. Chahn Bahng, the attractiv— no. She gave him card back.

Dina got started making the frosty vanilla bean latte and the two men went to sit at a table. Shanda came up to her, her curly afro bouncing a bit.

“Someone looks a little whipped for a certain customer.” Shanda teased her.

“Do you want me to kill myself?” Dina hissed. “Shut up, he might hear you!”

Shanda giggled and headed to the back room, probably going to tell Jazzy about their manger making heart eyes to one of their customers. To be honest she was quite disappointed when she finished making Chris' drink and when Bee finished the other guy's drink. They probably weren't going to see them anymore.. From the looks, they seemed like tourists since they didn't have Chicago vibe. Probably came for that music festival, Lollapalooza.

“Chris?" His name fell delicately off her tongue, he looked up from his conversation. Usually she wasn't this bad at giving customers their drinks. “Your order's ready.”

“Chris?” Her voice soft. His name sounded amazing coming from her. He did notice that she didn't have that Chicago accent that everyone else seemed to have. He couldn't help but wondered where she was from. “Your order's ready.”

Him and Jisung got up to take their coffees. Chan didn't want to leave just yet.. He didn't know if he would ever see her again due to his busy schedule and him living on the other side of the world.

“You're not from here, are you?” He asked before taking a sip. It was quite sweet, not something he'd usually enjoy but for some reason he was enjoying it today.

“No. How'd you guess?” She asked with furrowed eyebrows.

“You don't really talk like the people who live here.”

She chuckled, it sounded beautiful to his ears. “I was born and raised in Florida. Bee and I moved up here three years ago.” She gestured to the woman that made Jisung's latte. “And what about you?”

“I was born and raised in Australia. But I've been living in South Korea for some years now.”

“ah. So what brings you to Chicago? Lollapalooza I assume?” He almost froze. Did she know who he was? He chuckled and scratched the back of his hair.

“You could say that.”

She looked a little curious but she didn't pry. How could he even tell her that he was part of a Korean boy band, that millions of followers that were his babygirls? That's not something you could casually bring up, especially with a stranger you met not even an hour ago. He did wish though that they could be more than strangers...

“Your coffee shop is really cool, mind if we take a couple of pictures?” He knew Jisung was itching to take pictures for his insta, so might as well ask just to keep the conversation somewhat going.

“I don't mind at all.”

She felt giddy, he thought her coffee shop was cool. A lot of customers thought the shop was cool but hearing it come from such a gorgeous man made her feel butterflies. She watched as the two men took pictures for each other. She noticed his friend—she found out his name was Jisung, since Chris asked Jisung where he wanted to take a picture—mostly took of himself whereas Chris took pictures of the cafe. She wondered if he had a social media account, but she wasn't going to ask since that was too straight forward. When they were done taking their photos, Chris came up to the counter again.

“Thanks for letting us take pictures, Eggy.” He smiled his cute dimpled smile.

“Dina...” She murmured. He looked at her a bit confused, which made her snap out of her dreamlike state. “Erm. Just call me Dina. And it's no problem.”

She could already feel the knowing look from Bee. She heard the door leading to the backroom open and then close. Dina knew the second these two left, she was gonna get bombarded with questions...

“Yeah, thank again Dina.” He said. “When do you guys close?”

“Eight am to eight eight pm. But that's only Monday through Saturday. And on Sundays it's 11 am to eight-thirty pm.” She had wishful hope that he would come visit again... “Thinking about visiting again?”

He chuckled sheepishly. “Maybe. Are you here through all open hours?”

“God, no. I usually work the afternoon shifts but I'm only here this early is because we had a big shipment and I needed to supervise.”

“Ah, I see. Well I guess I'll have to come back here in the afternoons before I have to fly back.”

Her hopes went sky-high, he definitely wanted to see her again. Was he interested in her? Oh what luck if that was it.

“When are you flying back?” She asked before she could stop herself. Why did she have to ask such a question. Before she could say he didn't have to answer,

“Monday.”

Why was he telling her so much? She could be a fan pretending to not know him and so that she could sneak onto the plane. But for some reason, he felt like he could trust her with anything. He and Jisung unfortunately had to say their goodbyes because they had a last minute fitting today. He watched as she smiled her pretty smile and waved at them.

Jisung and Chris made their way back to the hotel. On their way to the hotel, Chan pulled out his phone and saw on his notification wall that he had a bunch of messages. That was strange. He unlocked it and found that their group chat that was for him and his bandmates was currently going crazy. This usually happened when there was a fight or a something serious was going on. Chan opened it up and read the messages. Oh my God he was gonna kill Jisung.

“Jisung-ah, what the fuck!” He whined. Jisung only responded in giggles.

Jisung had told every about his new crush. Now everyone was at-ing him, asking questions of this girl. Dammit now he had to deal with everyone once they reached the hotel. But unfortunately for him...

“Chan-hyung!!” Across the street, Felix and Jeongin were waving at them. What fucking luck.

The two younger ones jogged over with raised eyebrows and smug smiles.

“Chan hyung has a crush~” was literally the first thing they said. They two started taunting him and Jisung joined in. Chan's ears turned red. He started walking away, towards the hotel and they followed him like annoying puppies..

“Who was she?” Jeongin asked. But he already knew that she was the owner of the coffee shop they visited. Jisung left out no details.

“I'm pretty sure Jisung already told you.” Chan muttered, his ears still tinted red.

“Was she pretty, Hyung?” Jeongin teased.

“Very.” Chan answered truthfully.

“Did you feel butterflies, like how they portray in the movies?” Felix asked.

“Maybe.”

“Are you going to see her again?”

“Probably..”

“Are you going to ask her out?”

Why was he even answering their questions? Chan flushed. He probably could ask her out since their dating ban has been lifted for almost two years now. But how would he? He wasn't even sure if she was interested in him. And besides he hadn't been in the dating game for years now so he probably lost whatever game he had before.

The whole walk back to the hotel, these three were bothering and teasing him. But he ignored them, which caused them to eventually leave him alone by the time they got to the hotel..

Once Chan and Jisung left, the back room door opened and her friends came out. They all have her knowing looks. Dina sighed knowing what was coming.

““call me Dina”? Wow, that was fast. It took our loyalest costumers two years before they got to know your actual name,” Jazzy teased.

“You were staring so hard, your eyes turned into hearts like in the cartoons.” Bee giggled, while making hearts with her fingers.

“Someone's in love.” Shanda smiled. “Can't blame her, he was fine.”

“And he was totally making heart eyes at you too!”

Dina looked at Bee. “Really?”

“Yeah! You didn't notice?”

“She obviously didn't notice, she was too much in the clouds, couldn't even take his order properly.” Shanda joked.

“Hey. I took his order, I didn't make any mistakes!” Dina frowned. “You guys are bullies. This is out right bullying.”

Shanda, Jazzy and Bee just laughed.

Jazzy leant against the counter. “So, did you get his number or anything?” she asked.

Dina shook her head. Maybe she should have been bold and at least ask for any socials. And the disappointed looks on her friends faces didn't make her feel any better.

“Well that's unfortunate.” Bee pouted. “He was really cute too. And so was his friend.”

The girls didn't have time to sulk for costumers started to show up. Back to work for them...

It's was a busy day after that. They had quite a lot of people coming to order and taking pictures. Dina was quite confused by the lots of tourists that came, but she wasn't complaining. But she and Bee had to stay for the whole day since there were too many people for just Shanda and Jazzy to take care. Soon the day came to an end and they all were exhausted. The girls were chatting and cleaning, getting ready to lock up. It was quite crazy how busy today was. It was a great day although her friends were still sulking over the lost opportunity.

“Didn't he say he'll try to visit again?” Dina nodded, answering Shanda's question. “Then if he does, you better ask for his number or something!”

“He seems quite familiar to me.. can't seem to place him though.” Bee asked, pausing her mopping.

“Maybe he looks similar to someone you know.”

“Yeah.. maybe.”

The girls quickly finished the chores, wanting to go to their beds and lie down after the busy day. Then Dina locked up the shop. She already knew she was going to sleep until the afternoon, an hour before her shift starts...

There were lots going on around him, vocal warm ups, the kids getting their makeup on, last minute fitting, staff preparing things and casual conversations this Friday night. Chan was sitting, getting his makeup done. His thoughts, he tried to keep them in track on the performance he was about to do. But Dina somehow kept coming up. He thought about her every waking hour. It's like he couldn't forget about her. Always interfering in his thoughts. And always, a rosy feeling following after those thoughts and that said feeling was quite foreign to him. He was deep in thought when his stylist told him she was done with his makeup. He thanked and took out his phone. The stylist noona gave him a concerned look, so he pretended nothing was wrong by going on his phone. I mean nothing was wrong right? He needed a distraction... He went on TikTok, stalking STAYs since that's what he liked to do during his free time.

He was quiet surprised and confused. STAYs had somehow found Dina's Coffee shop. He hadn't even tagged the location neither had Jisung... Wow that was quite scary actually. Yeah maybe TikTok wasn't a good distraction.. Chan turned off his phone with a sigh. He decided to finish drinking the rest of the coffee his manager got him. He had specifically requested coffee from Eggy's coffee. He got another frosty vanilla bean latte. Yeah yeah go ahead and make fun of him. Even his manager gave him a weird look for asking for the drink earlier since it wasn't something he typically ordered. The last of the sweet drink was all gone. He sighed once again. His bandmates looked at him, a concerned look on their faces.

Fortunately, their manager called. 10 minutes till stage. Chan had an excuse to ignore their concerned looks and went to go check on everything with the staff. There were cameras again. They usually had cameras recording, for their lollapalooza BTS video or for any event in general. While Chan got up to do finally check ups, Jisung spoke to one of the cameras, Seungmin and Felix goofed around, Minho did vocal warm ups, Hyunjin did breathing exercises and Changbin got some makeup touches. He could tell everyone was a little nervous since this was a pretty big show. But he knew they'd do amazing like always. And sooner than they all thought, it was five minutes till stage. Chan gathered the group together, giving them all a pep talk and going through last minute things.

“Okay, we're going to crush the stage. You'll all do fine, I'm confident. Have fun, go crazy and make sure you don't get hurt, stay safe. We got this everyone.” and to end, they did their group cheer.

They all got into position. Chan took a deep breath. He was confident, and his secret motivation;

pretend she was out there, watching.

Just like she assumed yesterday, she did wake up an hour before her shift started. She quickly ran around her apartment getting ready. She didn't bother getting breakfast since she owned a coffee shop and could easily get breakfast there.

When she arrived at the coffee shop, she found Bee already at the counter, taking an order. Dina quickly went to the back room and tied her Rengoku apron on. The back room kitchen smelled of muffins, both blueberry and cinnamon. She took a muffin right of the tray, it was warm. Bee or Jazzy must of baked these earlier... Dina quickly ate the muffin, gaining a tad bit of energy from the sweetness. She washed her hands and went out to the front to help Bee.

The shop kept her busy. She had hope that he would show up today. But as the day went on, she lost some of that hope. She didn't have that usually ray of color to her personality with the costumers. Bee noticed and so did the regulars.

“You okay?” Bee had asked her when the shop was quiet.

Dina quickly nodded and gave her a smile. And before Bee could pry, Dina gave her an excuse having to go check on their emails. When Dina was in the small office by herself, she frowned. She made her way to the computer, might as well check on the emails...

Dina sighed as she locked up for the night. He hasn't showed up at all. Oh well. There was always tomorrow.

He wasn't there next day. Or the after that. Maybe she had gotten her hopes up too high. He'd be leaving tomorrow, that's what was repeating through her mind all the way back to her apartment. She really was mad at herself for not taking the chance and getting his number. He seemed really cool too.

Dina unlocked the door to her apartment. She had barely stepped into her home when her phone started blowing up. She fumbled in her tote bag, looking for the device. She pulled her phone out, it was the group chat.

Bee had been spamming TikTok links and sent an insta post.

Dina stared in shock, the instagram post was Chris in her coffee shop. The post had over 900k likes! Who was this man? She couldn't help but stalk his ig... He had to be a model or something... With shaky hands she searched up his name. She read the first thing that showed up, He was in a kpop group called Stray Kids and he was also the leader of that said group. She couldn't believe she just casually met someone this famous and that he possibly had been flirting with her.

She went back on the group chat which was still going crazy with her three friends raving about the group. She clicked on the first link that Bee has sent. It was an edit, from Lollapalooza. So that answered her questions to his vague answer... She went through the other links Bee had sent, watching with semi wide eyes. She also went through the comments, and found out he had a pretty wild fanbase... She didn't realize she had been scrolling through edits for about ten minutes now until she glanced at the time. Her head felt empty at this new found information. She needed to get ready for bed... She quickly got something to eat, heating up some leftovers from yesterday. She snarfed it down and then got something to drink. Then she went to her room and started getting ready for the night, puting her phone on DND since her friends were still chatting about in the chat. She went through all the steps of her night routine carefully. Once she was under her sheets, she sighed and hugged the pillow besides her. Just when she thought she could be in a relationship. She buried her face in the pillow, flustered from all those edits she had watched earlier. She remembered how his vains went up his arm as he handed her his card, his dimpled smile and laugh. She was sad and a little annoyed at the thought that there was no way he could be with her. She knew how crazy kpop fanbases were...

That night she couldn't sleep, he was in every thought of hers...

Dina had come into the shop late, this Sunday afternoon. She felt annoyed by the lack of sleep, she could barely function. It was unfair that he swirled everywhere in her thoughts but there was nothing she could do about it. Dina was mostly silent during her shift, Bee didn't even pry, letting her have her space. She just wanted to go home and sleep. The hours went by slowly. It was nearing the closing time. The coffee shop didn't have many costumers on Sunday evenings. She frowned as she looked out the window. Evening... He should be flying back now. He hadn't come visit once more. It was never a guaranteed he would visit the shop again... Yet why did it kinda hurt?

“Hey.” Dina jumped slightly at Bee's voice. Where had she even come from?

“Yeah?”

“You look tired. Maybe you should go home early. I can lock up.”

“Are you sure?” Dina tilted her head.

“We barely get any costumers during this time on Sunday.. I can handle the shop, it's only an hour before closing. I'll be fine. Go home. Rest.”

Dina looked at her, she felt bad leaving Bee alone when she had come into work late and now she was going to leave early?

“Just go, Dina! You need rest!” Bee said pushing her towards the back room to get her stuff.

“Alright, alright! I'll go home. No need to shove me, you prick.” Dina went to get her stuff and put her apron away.

To be honest, her bed did sound nice right now. Dina said a goodbye to Bee before she exited the shop. The sun had set a few minutes ago. Dina looked up to the clear sky, the waxing crescent looking down on her. The air was cool on her exposed shoulders, it being 73°F. Time to go home...

“Dina!” A voice called out to her, making her stop in the tracks she barely began.

“Dina!” He called out to her. It seemed she was nearing to leave. But they don't close until eight-thirty on Sundays... Was something wrong?

Dina turned around, a puzzle yet surprised look on her face.

“Chris?”

Chan jogged up to her. He smiled at her, he was glad he caught her before she left, he didn't know when he would ever see her again if he hadn't.

“What are you doing here?” Her tone matched her puzzled face.

“Do you not want me here?” He couldn't help but tease.

“What? No I do... That's not what I meant. Didn't you say your flight leaves this evening?”

“Yeah, I did.. but it got rescheduled to tomorrow.”

“Oh.” She simply said.

A bit of silence loomed over them before Dina spoke up again.

“Did you come here for a coffee? The shop's not closed yet. I could make you something.”

“Thank you for the offer. But I actually came here to see you one last time before I go. There's something I want to tell you. And there's something I want to ask you as well.”

She looked at him, curious of what he wanted to say.

“Well. Uh. You see, I'm in this group called Stray Kids—”

“I know. I found out yesterday.” She interrupted softly.

Well, it was bound to happen...

“Oh. Well that makes it a tad bit easier...”

Confusion appeared on her face again, he knew she had no idea what he was talking about.

“You said there's something you wanted to ask me as well?”

“Yeah.” He scratched the back of his neck. He had rehearsed what wanted to say at the hotel but his mind went blank. Damn, time to wing it.

“I know we kinda just met.. but you're really pretty and I wanted to get to know you better. Truth be told, I can't stop thinking about you.”

She was silent for a little bit before she spoke, her voice soft as the night's cool air.

“I can't stop thinking about you either. And I'd like to get know you too.” Her dark brown eyes sparkled by the lights that shone from the shop's windows.

Chan felt his heart flutter. Maybe this was the start of something amazing...

The Owl House Pilot Leak!!!

Oh my titan.

The Owl House’s original pilot episode (basically a bunch of voiced-over storyboards) just got leaked and OMT. Watching it felt like experiencing the original magic of the show all over again… Reminding me what it was like to fall in love the first time!!! The hype and rush, the excitement to type down my thoughts after a new episode, analyzing and gushing over both big and small moments, the details!!! The pilot has reiterated all over to me again why I love these characters, from Luz's powerful earnestness, to Eda's chaotic demeanor! It’s like having the whole show open ahead of me, the possibilities endless when knowing this is just the beginning and we could go anywhere from here!

What’s interesting is that Luz’s conflict with Camila doesn’t really exist here; In fact Camila isn’t present or mentioned at all! What brings Luz to the isles is Amity, who’s been learning in the human world, under the guise of being a human by disguising her ears! It’s alluded to that Odalia and Alador made her do it, though we don’t know why…

But WOW that must’ve been so meta, doing S3 with Amity stuck in the human world with Luz, hiding her ears! It must’ve been a fun way to bring back the older concepts in new form! And indeed, we see a couple of stuff we’ve already gotten glimpses of, such as the storyboards of Luz offering her friendship art to Amity! I love that we get to see the actual scenario of how Amity accidentally defended Luz in the first place, since we heard that but didn’t get to see how it turned out.

It’s interesting that Lumity is basically the inciting incident of the story, though I can see why the final version opted instead to emphasize Luz’s conflict with her mother. Especially with how she chooses to stay in the isles in the final draft, which leads to guilt over lying to her mom, having her ‘coming out’ moment that eventually occurs in Yesterday’s Lie, etc. So more agency when it comes to Luz losing her access to the human world. Plus in the pilot, there isn't the same emphasis on Luz trying to live out her dreams of being a witch, and her obsession with stories that ties back to Manny and forms the basis for a lot of other themes and arcs.

That said, I also appreciate what this alternate take offers, and how Lumity helps tie everything together, it really is the queerness that is such a foundational part of the ‘weirdness’ theme that the show is about, and it’s intertwined with the pilot! God Luz being heartbroken when Amity dismisses the drawing… And then crying when Eda compliments it without realizing who it’s about! Or maybe she did, she could’ve recognized Luz there and figured out a way to stealthily make Luz feel better…!

I love Luz routinely lock-picking her locker because she presumably forgot the combination! And it’s interesting that we have a setup of there being multiple dimensions that the Boiling Isles has access to, and not just the human world and Demon Realm. That plays a role in the climax, more on that later. Given we have what is basically an airport for different dimensions, I wonder if we would’ve seen Luz find her way back home much earlier on, under much less intense circumstances, in a S1A episode?

The ‘Emperor’ is also alluded to in the pilot, which we didn’t get actual mention of until the fifth episode in the final show. He apparently dislikes humans and wants Luz brought over to him, is this still operating off of the ‘Pupa’ version of the character who claimed to speak on behalf of the true ruler, trapped in their metamorphosis by him? So maybe he wasn’t always human, or maybe this is Belos’ hypocritical way of ‘protecting’ humans by keeping them away and in blissful ignorance of the demon realm.

We also establish Hexside much earlier! IIRC Hexside was always part of the show, but executives pushed for it to have more emphasis, which the crew continued to follow through on in S2 onwards because that had already been set up. Lilith is the principal, and I recognize the storyboards of her, including her bat transformation! We get a Tinella Nosa cameo, we see Amity, and there’s also a brief cameo of Willow too! Nice way to set her up before her proper debut.

The ‘barrier’ containing King’s crown turns out to just be a regular human locker, which makes me wonder if the writers updated the final draft to make it a force field that only allows humans through, because of the whole Belos twist. Which makes me wonder if in this draft, Belos is Pupa, who never was human, or maybe they realized the opportunity to insert foreshadowing into a big twist regarding the main villain. Makes me wonder if the house we see Amity enter in the pilot, which is on sale, would've had any significance like in the final show. Love how Tinella Nosa is a student at Hexside, and also Dana having to occasionally insert lines for Wendie Malick and others was great.

Lilith is a lot more openly adversarial, which is different compared to how her actual debut provides a softer side to her; I imagine this would’ve been apparent in a later episode of the ‘Pilot AU’, and her transformation has me curious; Was she originally the one with the curse, but then the writers changed it to Eda? Or did they both have a curse? Eda also has an owl form she can summon and control at Will, maybe all Clawthornes have a beast mode that’s less of a curse and more of a talent. Lilith ends up trapped in another dimension, which makes me wonder if she’d have a temporary replacement –possibly Pilot Bump- or if she’d return offscreen. We see the portal key get destroyed under much more casual circumstances, though it’s less as big of a deal for this and the established ‘dimension port’ we saw before.

(Also, Amity recognizing Luz in the hallway… Everything to me!!!)

Warden Wrath doesn’t exist and neither does the Conformatorium, it’s Lilith and Hexside. With her as principal and Amity as student, I wonder if we would’ve gotten more of their relationship in the pilot AU, if Covention was a way of carrying over that former connection since Amity would be a teacher’s pet in either version of the story. And speaking of ties to Covention, it’s interesting is that Eda’s chest gem seems to be linked to the Emperor’s Coven, as ‘Pilot Kikimora’ uses it to control her. Curiously, we have a scene at the end mirroring what we got with Lilith in the final draft of the show!

I feel it implies that Eda DID join the Emperor’s Coven with Lilith, if only for a brief moment, but then defected; But the chest gem is basically the pilot version of the Emperor’s sigil, except with the explicit function of being a shock collar. I find it interesting that Eda still has the mirror to contact the EC with, instead of just getting rid of the thing. Is she a rogue agent who hasn’t totally cut ties, because she can’t? Won’t?

And the fact that Pilot Kikimora can just shock Eda at will makes me wonder if the Emperor is low-key just letting Eda roam around, which makes me wonder if he’s aware of the familial connection, is using Eda to find Luz, already knows about her doing that because of the time loop, etc. We’d of course have gotten an episode where Luz finds out about Eda’s connection and helps her deal with the gem… I realize now that Luz learning Eda also wanted to join the EC with Lilith is a carryover of this idea.

I can see the ups and downs between both versions; The final draft sets up Luz’s conflict with Camila and the reality camp, which is foundational to her character arc throughout the whole show. Her pain over being ‘sent away’ is just so vital that I appreciate its inclusion in the first episode. But I also like the inclusion of Lumity and the earnest desire to be friends with someone who showed her, unwittingly, any kindness at all! We get explicit bullying from Luz’s peers in the pilot, but in the final draft we also get her thoughtlessness that plays a big part in her S1 arc. And Luz’s arrival in the isles is more intertwined with Eda and King in the final version, which also feels right; The show is about these three in particular!

All in all, this was wonderful to watch! The magic was experienced all over again, not just in watching an episode, but also commentating on one that was just ‘released’ as well? I thought the last time I’d do anything like this was with the series finale Watching and Dreaming… But as Luz said, it really comes full circle with watching the first episode all over again! So maybe we have other stuff to still look forward to after all… At the very least, we have an eternal anticipation with an unexplored universe ahead of us, that will never reach completion; So it's like our ever-lasting final gift from TOH, and a good last one. Okay, I literally just watched a spooky month short and i wanna kinda break it down a lil bit, cuz we learned ALOT through it. Again, sorry for my terrible english 😭🙏

Okay so in this shot we see Kevins parents (rlly cute) and we see "Rad's bday" on calendar (which is apparently in september, knowing that Kevin started working in candy club in the same month), that means that he knew Radford for a long time, even before he started working in candy club.

Okay, thats really funny, but when Skid and Pump appeared in this short with different masks i was like: "YOOO they finally revealed their hair styles. Wow these fan predictions were really close!" until i remembered that their hair styles were already revealed a long time ago in the house pictures.....

Okay so through Pump we now know that Skids father is dead. Not missing, not left - dead. <= another question that have been answered.

Lila looks so tired, poor soul (SHE EVEN WALKING IN THE STREETS IN SLIPPERS 😭)

Ok, now its my fav part. We saw all the moments w Skid and Pump in candy club. First part of it were just the moments that we have already seen or that have been mentioned (like when Skid n Pump got alot of fake blood in the place), there were also some others moments weve never seen, but i dont think theyre really important since they all happened before even eps 4 and 5, so i dont think i need to break them down (especially because of this stupid fuCKING PICTURE LIMIT—) BUT! The things i WANT TO talk about are all the things that happened after ep 6 - the things we still havent got to. And if its actually the foreshadowing (is that the right word for that?...) for what will happen in the future eps then its kinda a dissapointing cuz we got spoiled, and FUCKING AMAZING at the same time, like I have VERY mixed feelings about this, but i more like it than hate it tbh. SO im gonna break these things down like they are actual spoilers for future episodes, but that can be not true, who knows.

Okay, the first thing we see after ep 6 is another winter situation (the hole from Moloch is still there 😭) w hatzgang, Skid n Pump, and Susie, while the whole place was acreeting w some weird roots w eyes?? Then i suppose Roy was tormenting the poor kids as always, and Susie got mad at him and left, and then Rob and Ross did the same thing while Roy looked offended n pissed (which i cant show you becuz of a FUCKING LIMIT—)

Then, Lila, Jaune, John and Jack came to the candy club. I cant really tell what couldve happened, but Lila n Jaune looked really mad, and then STARTED ARGUE FOR SOME REASON, like I literally have no idea what couldve happened, it could be anything.

Then there was a literal fnf scene, like an actual rap battle between the spooky bois and bf (which i also cant show you, CAN U GUESS WHY?? :) ). I honestly think that this is a simple joke and nothing more, but who knows, maybe it will actually happen in spooky month, that would be pretty cool.

Okay, then the Spider. Like, we already all knew that its gonna be an episode vilian at some point, so its not really surprising honestly. Really curious how its gonna be portrated tho, like what is it gonna do, what its motives and goals are gonna be, what characterization are a LITERAL SPIDER gonna get - its all really interesting.

Then a cult. Also not really surprising tbh, like I think it was obvious that they were gonna get to Kev at some point, interesting why tho. Like how could he be useful or harmful for them? (interesting detail is that after a scene w the cultists Kevin still stayed in the club, so the cult tried to get him but failed? I wonder why and how.)

Okay... MOTHER. FUCKING. SKID'S DAD. HOLY SHIT IM SO EXCITED FOR HIM. If we look at the shot it seems like Skid came here to introduce Kevin to his dad (cute)

And then i suppose Dad got a candy bar for Skid and they both left. Really curious how is Skids dad gonna introduce himself to his son, how Skid is gonna react (well even by these 2 shots we can see that he is really happy, but im more curious about the first reactions, im in for some wholesome fluff please!!!). And Lilas reaction is also reaaaaaally interesting (if she will even know)

And the last shot is this. I also dont think it really means anything (maybe foreshadowing that Kev is gonna die??), the only thing that intrigues me is this sky, like I dont even know what it looks like, some sort of black hole? A fissure? Some ultimate evil that comes from another world? A 4th wall break?? Who fucking knows. But it does look interesting.

“Anything for you love, thank you for being so patient and..- understanding. You made me very very happy” Wade places another kiss onto your cheek before you two hold each other tightly again. You could seriously fall asleep like this, it's the most comfortable you have felt in a while…a long while.

“It was my pleasure Wade” You smile.

I'm back with another lita post😁, but this time on episode 13 cause I'm rewatching it, and im stunned each time with fortpeat performance in these heart-wrenching scenes. I mean, if you've watched, we've seen Sky's journey of allowing himself to trust and fully love pai allow himself to be happy be selfish and have this, which was the scariest thing to do cause of his past.

And peat wow🤧 his portrayal of Sky here, and later in the next scene when he goes to tell his story of what happened. It is the highlight of his acting! *makes me so excited for Love Sea* but Sky isn't crying. He looks so drained, and Prapai asks for him to cry, not to hold it in, but as he starts to cry himself, Sky asks him why. And then these lines!! If you can't cry, I'll cry for you. If you suffer, I will suffer with you, if your in pain, I'll be in pain too. Let me cry in your stead.

Pai is so emotional here, but he needs to have Sky see him like actually see him! He doesn't want to lose him again he isn't gonna leave him he wants to if anything be barrier for the pain he's feeling right now 😭😭😭😭Yet he's trying his best hold up but can't help but to cry

He doesn't want Sky to think this is something he has to face on his own, and what just happened won't make him change his mind. He's gonna listen and always encourage Sky to feel whatever it is he's feeling to him.

Which is so good cause in the special ep sky does that tho he feels already securee in his relationship with pai at this point of their relationship he says he knows how much pai loves him and knows his heart 🤧,he doesn't feel uncomfortable to express that discomfort of having his exes being around. And pai takes full responsibility for that and acknowledges it. He's sorry his past still is getting in the way of their relationship. And that's something sky shouldn't have have bear with constantly of his ex flings. Healthy communication at it's finest!!!

Even as back in ep 12 for sky to admit to himself that he actually loves pai as sad as it was to see sky break from this wall he was trying to keep up, a wall that protected him and told him that it was too good to be true and pai didnt really love him at all. But i think sky already knew he loved him and he lenaded into it but like i said seeing pai prove his point that made him retreat. But pai being there and reading all the things sky wrote about him making him see that this isnt really what you want and though u cant tell me yet how you really feel about me. It's okay cause I love you and you can too tell me you love me. like 😭😭😭😭😭

forever is going to be obsess with john's interest for detective work

like in the first season, during the first episodes, when Arthur is a little bit more himself and starts deducing everything, making logical connections, and being all detective, while John is looking at it, thinking "wow. this guy really knows his stuff". And the way Arthur talks about how he connected the events and stuff pulls John a little too. I personally hc that this was one of the first pushes for John to become his own

Then in the second season, when Arthur still relies on logic and his deduction to try and survive and John is furious because it won't work in Dreamlands. It is pointless, it is stupid and they should stop it. But what if wants to do it, what if he wants to keep analyzing stuff like Arthur, and try to find connections, but they can't because they are in danger and it is far more important for them to stay alive than solve a mystery.

And then season 3 happens, which leaves both Arthur and John so so tired and exhausted. Both mentally and physically.

And then season 4 comes with a new mystery to solve, new suspects, new evidence, and new witnesses. "There was a brief moment, where the prospect of your occupation seemed quite exciting". He is so excited to be back in the field with Arthur, now more experienced and he wants to solve this together with him. But his memory suddenly is failing him, Arthur finds new people to help him solve the case and John is so so alone. What was supposed to be their thing, is now not

And now they are in England but so so far from what John wanted....It is basically Dreamlands again, where logic and deduction won't work

All I want for malevolent finale is john being able to be a proper detective. I think he would like that

Celebrating Outlander's 10th Anniversary with a special interview ft. Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis - Enjoy!

Season One

Hello Sassenachs of Reddit!

We hope you’ve been enjoying our celebrations in honor of the ten year anniversary of Outlander! This subreddit has been such a phenomenal resource and community for Outlander fans that we wanted to do something special for you all. So this week during the production of Season 8 we pulled both Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis from their busy schedules to do a quick Q&A about their early days on the show. The resulting answers are transcribed below for a bit of bonus reading material. -XO, Bestie

Let’s talk about the premiere episode, “Sassenach,” which is turning 10 years old. When you look back, what do you remember that fans might not know?

Maril Davis: Well, I don't know if this is a fun fact, but our first shot of that episode was Claire in the scene where she comes out after treating the soldiers and the war is over and she drinks the champagne. That was literally our first scene that we shot from that episode. We took a picture of the clapboard and all kinda looked around and felt like, oh, this is the start of something special. I didn't know it was gonna be this special. I didn’t know it would be this many years. That was my first memory of it.

The day the magic began!

Matthew B. Roberts: Going back to the first episode, everybody was new. In a weird way, we were all Sassenachs. We had this group from Los Angeles that came over here and even though everybody spoke English, it was like being in a whole new world. And then we had a cast that was new to a big, American television show - certainly Caitríona and Sam. So, there were a lot of newbies, so to speak. I know a lot of people had worked in the industry for a long time but it just felt like we all stepped through the stones in that first episode. The first day was a little weird because it was not in Scotland, it was in “France,” because we did Claire being a nurse in France for our first day. And I believe we even did a little side unit of Claire learning how to smoke with Uncle Lamb. So, we were all over the place but it was really exciting. I remember the group of us being so excited to hear the word “action” and get going, you know?

Do you remember the first time you ever watched the finished episode either in edit or among fans at the first premiere?

Maril Davis: I remember the first two episodes because they were kind of like a pair… watching those and just being so excited because, as a fan of the books, seeing that come to life was very special. I knew so immediately that we cast this series so well. I knew in that moment, “Wow, this is gonna work!” I remember having that feeling in the edit.

Matthew B. Roberts: I don't remember the day but it's like this: we've all watched premieres. We've all watched pilots. But when you watch something and you go, “Wow. We have a show…” I remember the feeling of watching it. “Wow. This is something I have not seen.” You congratulate yourself but you never know if you’re ever gonna get a back 9 or if you're ever going to get a second season. You're always hanging on a thread. We didn't know. And it wasn't broadcast television, so you still didn't know. I don't think we were quite done when we started airing. So we got some feedback and we were living in the days of social media really gearing up so that instantaneous feedback was something new. I'll tell you, that was weird! ... I didn't really get it until around the end of the second season how impactful the show had been to a lot of people. We put it out there but the fans bring the characters into their homes each week. They fell in love with them, they fell in love with the show, and they wanted more. And I know how I felt when I would watch my favorite shows and they would go on hiatus and you're like, “Oh god, please come back!” You wanna spend more time with these people that are now your friends and family that you care for.

As for the fan events… we had a really big premiere in LA for Season 5. So many people came up to me and said how much it meant to them. They didn't say it was good. They didn't say they liked the show. They said how much it meant to them. And that to me is different than, “I like the show.” That means a lot to me.

The story goes that Matt gave Maril the books around 2011/2012 because she was looking for a new project with Ronald D. Moore. Matt, how did you come upon the books?

Matthew B. Roberts: In one of my first jobs in the industry, a long time ago, I was a reader where you read scripts and books and do coverage on them. The production company I was working for handed me these books and they wanted to make TV movies out of them. I read the books and I liked them but I passed on them. I said, “They're just too big, there's too much in them. There's no way you could do it.” … I just couldn't imagine Outlander, any one of the books to tell you the truth, in an hour and forty minutes. You’d lose so much. So, I passed. And I literally made the note, “But it would make a great television show.” … Then Maril was outside my office one day talking to another friend of ours… she was looking for something epic. I just so happened to have the books on my shelf still. I kinda carried them along, they were too big, so I kept them in my office. I brought them out to her and I said, “Here, read these.” And she read them and fell in love with them. As the quote goes, the rest is history!

What stood out about the books that let you know this would be a fantastic TV show?

Matthew B. Roberts: The shows that I loved and really bonded with had love stories that endured and it could be different kinds of love stories. There are friends. It could be husband and wife. It could be boyfriend girlfriend. Girlfriend girlfriend. Boyfriend boyfriend. It didn't matter, they were love stories. And when you start reading Outlander and you get into it, you start to realize, “Wow, this is an epic story!” When you start getting into over the course of time, you go, “Oh, it could be very episodic too. It's not only episodic, but it's serialized.” You can kind of come into it at a different time because there's time travel. If you started Outlander in Season 3, Season 3 kind of stands up on its own and then you go backwards and you go, “Oh, that's how they got there.” Oddly enough, when they handed me the books, I just took the top book off and read it and it just happened to be Dragonfly in Amber. I didn't read Outlander first. They didn't tell me there was an order. So I just read Dragonfly in Amber and it held up perfectly fine. Then I went back and read Outlander, and I was like, “Oh, that's how all that happened” but it still held up perfectly fine. You could tell Outlander in 50 different ways–pick a spot, start there and go backwards and forwards. As a storyteller, in television terms, you realize there's so much material here but there's also so much emotion over the course of this journey. And isn't that what we hear stories for? It's to be afraid, or to fall in love, or to fantasize, or to travel somewhere you can't go. Well, Outlander does all that.

Was there anything about the first season of the show that you fought for—for example, casting, certain lines or plot points, characters, etc.—and are proud to have in the show?

Matthew B. Roberts: You know, that first writer's room was fun. It was fun to bring all the ideas and favorite parts because everybody had different things that they really liked about the book. And, to tell you the truth, that's how it works. You bond with certain parts of the story. I think the one thing that we felt very strongly about was can we tell this book the way it's meant to be told in the sense that Claire's narrative and inner journey is very big in these books. We had to go with the conceit, be bold and go, “We're just gonna do voice over.” It’s something that we don't keep up with all the time now because Claire has people to talk to. It's one of the reasons why, not only did we love the Murtagh character, but Murtagh gave Claire and Jamie someone to talk to when you're trying to get out of the head. We always say you can't film a thought and because so much of Claire's emotional journey is in her internal dialogue and monologues, we had to figure out how to get that out. We just dove into the conceit. But we learned our lesson in the first season. We had probably too many and they were too long, so we'd have to pause shooting and the actors would have to just stand around because we knew 45 seconds of voice over would come and we went, we can't do that anymore. So, we had to struggle and figure out, alright, what's the best way of doing this? Let's just play the action and see where it fits. So rather than make room for it, we kind of calibrated it in the timings.

Maril Davis: You could say I fought for Caitríona but I wasn't the only one. I remember we were about three weeks away from filming. We had potential other choices and we could have easily made the call to pick one of the other actresses for the role because production was really on us. It's very unusual to start in 2-3 weeks on a shoot this big and not have an actress. And Costume needed a Claire. I just remember saying to Ron in our office, if we don't get these two right, if we don't get the right Jamie and Claire, if they don't have the right chemistry, we're never going to succeed. So, I felt very strongly that we had to wait for the right person. And literally the next day, Toni Graphia sent me an email saying I found this woman named Caitríona. We got so many casting tapes. She was in an area we hadn't seen, maybe overlooked, or maybe that hadn't been presented to us for some reason. We all watched her and instantly knew and flew her out to Los Angeles. It went very fast from there.

What has been the most difficult thing about adapting Outlander for the screen?

Matthew B. Roberts: The challenge is to take what is meant for a book, that medium, and bring it to life. We simply cannot do certain scenes the way they're written just from a sheer time and budget standpoint. And you know it as soon as you read it, you go “God, I wish we could do this.” And you know you can't. We can't get this many people, or they can't build this many costumes in this amount of time. So, we pick the moments. … Oddly enough in Season 3, the Battle of Culloden technically isn't in the book. We find Jamie after. On the first pass, Culloden was really big and we realized we couldn’t film it, not the way it was written, so we had to figure out a way of bringing all that emotion to the screen but still have the feeling of a battle. That's what I think we've done really well. I think the group has done such a magnificent job because we don't need to show all the battles, we need to show the emotion and why it matters to Jamie and Claire. Once we went, “It's not about the fighting and the blowing up... It's about who we care about in these battles, focus on them,” then we brought down the scale a little bit and filmed what was important.

Maril Davis: I think a lot of seasons have been challenging. I actually think this last season has been the most challenging. Every season has its challenge but some seasons just work out so well. I’m incredibly proud of Season 7. We didn't know if we were ending with Season 7 so we took two books and had so much material to choose from. The first season was also very easy because it was so easy to follow the books. … Season 8 has been challenging not only because we're ending before the books (so that is its own challenge) but it's also the last season. There's a lot of pressure. I feel like this book is a set up for the next book and its finale. So it's been challenging to try to go out on a season when you don't have the ending at hand.

Looking back at when you first started production, what were the main challenges or surprises of shooting Season 1 in Scotland?

Maril Davis: When we first started here, we were told that everyone shoots 11 day fortnights. So, for the first 3 months, we were in 11 day fortnights. For Americans who don't know, we shot the full week through Saturday and only had Sunday off, basically. It was very difficult and I think we were all dragging. Then we found out they do 11 day fortnights in the UK but usually on very short runs, shows that are 4 or 5 episodes long. About 3 months in, we went back to a more traditional 5 days a week and that was a huge relief. It was also very challenging in the beginning with the weather in very remote areas. But I honestly look back on those days and those are some of my happiest memories. I think we felt like we were all in it together and doing something really special. Even though it was tough, I really cherish those first seasons.

Matthew B. Roberts: It’s been a pretty amazing transformation, I'd say. When we started out, the studios that we have now manufactured parts for cell phones or something. It was just hollowed out empty warehouses and we transformed it over a decade. Now, it's essentially a working studio. We have construction. We have a mill. We have costume warehouses. We have prop warehouses. We can fabricate almost anything there. We also now have seven stages. We started off with two. And they weren't soundproofed! When it rained really hard we had to yell “cut” and we had to open up the doors to get the smoke out because we used real candles. Now we have extractors. It's soundproofed. It's a modern studio. We've really come a long way! Also with the crews. The first year, we brought crews up from different parts of the UK and once Outlander became established, so many of the Scots who had had to leave home to work came back and they got to go to their homes and families every night. They could work on a show that they were proud of, or I think they're proud of.

Our cast of characters have become so iconic! Do you have any favorite memories from seeing any of the cast embody their characters for the first time?

Matthew B. Roberts: We started in the writers’ room a year before we started filming. We had lived with these characters for a long time. I'd read all the books up to that point multiple times before we even started. So, I was fighting what I'd already imagined. And then you have people stepping on the stage and you go, “Is that Jamie Fraser? Is that Claire Fraser?” … You get something that you didn't expect and that you didn't even know you wanted. I didn't know I wanted Murtagh to live on but after seeing Duncan play him, I did. And that just happened over and over and over. I mean, think about what Lauren Lyle did with Marsali. She brought her to life and then you just keep writing to that. You dig those stories out of the books and go, “Let’s tell those stories.” That happened over and over again. Jamie and Claire were always going to be the through line. The more Caitríona and Sam embodied them and brought their own take to the characters, we found that current in the river. You go, “Let's take that path because that's the way they're taking the characters and those are the stories you want to tell.” So you mine those out of the book.

Maril Davis: Caitríona and Sam, obviously… seeing them together for the first time in Los Angeles. They met for the first time at Sony Studios. They have a very small screening room that's outside one of the office buildings and that's where they first met the first time. We all just were like, “Oh, this is really going to work. That was amazing.” Also, we cast Sam first, so Sam was able to read with some of our other cast besides Caitríona. I was in London once with him and got to see him read with Graham McTavish for the first time. It was really exciting seeing their chemistry. It came down to Graham and another actor, and their chemistry really popped on the screen. What was also interesting about that casting session is that we had Sam read with Laura Donnelly. At the time, she was a potential Claire contender. As soon as we saw her we all were like, this is our Jenny. She was fabulous, so she could’ve easily done any part, but just seeing them together and realizing “we have Jamie's sister” was also really special

What has been the most surprising thing that has happened to you, or to your careers, because of Outlander?

Matthew B. Roberts: I don't know if I can answer “surprising.” I can answer that Outlander's given me a lot. I've gone from Producer to Showrunner and it's given me the ability to do a lot more in my career than I might have imagined ten years ago. It's given me a new family in Scotland that I didn't know that I could have. I've built lifetime friendships. We talk a lot about Outlander being a family. We've established this place, this studio, and so much of our crew that's worked from the very first episode are still here. Some have gone out, but they come back. I think it's because we built a really caring family. That's why we've had so many babies born. If Outlander ever comes back in ten years, we have a full crew just ready to go!

Maril Davis: I was talking to Diana Gabaldon the other day because we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, although that's not an appropriate way to describe this ending because light at the end of the tunnel means you're almost done and you're pleased about it. It's such a bittersweet ending. We're all incredibly sad. It's been a tough season because of the emotions of it all. But I was just thanking her because I truly feel like I'm not sure I'll have this experience again on another show. I have other shows, and I will have other shows, but I feel like this was, in a weird way, my first, along with a lot of other people's first—Sam, Caitríona, Toni, Matt… so many of us. This was the thing that really launched us all and we did it together. The TV industry has changed and now there's so much more saturation that this is just a very special one. When you're involved with something like this and you get a crew, cast, and writers you love… we all realized how special this was. That's one of the reasons it's hard to leave it, because it feels like such a defining moment for everyone's career at the same time and you don't often get that in this industry. You certainly don't often get 10 years of making a show.

After all these years, is there anything that you haven’t been asked about Outlander that you’d like to talk about?

Matthew B. Roberts: We get asked a lot, you know, what are funny moments or what are your favorite moments? I don't have favorites. I think that every episode is supposed to do the thing it's supposed to do and if you take one away, then you can't get to the next one… So many of us care about this show and I mean deeply care about it. We put our hearts and souls into this show for 10 years, 12 years for some of us that started on day one, and we want to see it all the way through. Is it important that people like it? Of course. But I think it's more important that it means something to them.

Maril Davis: Oh my god. What question have I never been asked? I will say, when you're not an actor, you get asked the questions that are a little more dry. You don't get the fun things, like, who cracks up the most in the writers' room? Actually, I'm not sure anyone totally cracks up. I don't know if that would be me. But we don't get asked the fun questions. We get asked: What's the tone of this season? Can you describe this season in 10 words?

Okay Maril, here’s one fun question to close us out then… obviously, the costumes on Outlander have been amazing. If you could steal any of them, which would you steal?

Maril Davis: Claire, in the first season, had this amazing riding coat with fur trim that she then gave to Brianna and that Brianna wore. I love that. And, I mean, the Dior suit. It feels like you gotta go with that.

DRDT Chapter 2 Episode 14: First Impressions

Episode 14!!! If Ep 11 really was the 70% mark (apparently the dev said that but don’t quote me on it, I saw it in a YT comment), then it only goes up to Ep 16. In the first trial, the culprit was revealed in Ep 10, then Ep 11 was their final defense as the class unraveled all the remaining mysteries, and Ep 12 was mostly post-trial. If the pattern repeats, this might be the episode we get our culprit reveal!!! And it seems likely, with the forty minute mark. So excited!!!

Also fine if it doesn’t happen if course, but we’ll see!

Nico! Nico! Explain the blood on the wires and my life is yours!!! I’m still surprised Teruko got “hanging” out of that crime scene to be honest.

Ace is so funny. He’s technically right that people should ask the victim and not just the killer, but he has nothing to offer.

“It’s hard to remember the evidence.” (Paraphrased). Eden.

[Teruko lists the evidence] And… she omitted the tape. Yeah, the trial would get pretty derailed if Rose noticed the oddity there right away.

Wow, immediately Rebuttal Showdown let’s go! Really cool Hu animation. I wonder if she’ll end up being the Ace attacker or not? She could still just be defending Nico because.

“That’s why I have to interrogate Nico.” I love the voice acting, the chillest Rebuttal Showdown ever so far xD

[Sword Reveal] Fan?… Oh, because the fan being broken implies a hanging, right? That’s where she’s going with this?

“Lost their temper at Ace” is not how I will put attempted murder, Hu, but you do you.

[Cut] Oh, the fan was used as a pulley??? Fucking how???

“The fan being broken would suggest a hanging.” (Paraphrased) Oh I was kinda right with my start of RS guess.

“Isn’t that wire Hu’s custom weapon?” Woo, Whit with the brain cell!

“Nico stole from Rose, so they stole from [Hu]” (Paraphrased) Yeah! Teruko and I think alike!

[Hu triple dots] Was the wire stolen? I’m almost second guessing it with how reluctant she is to say that.

{Hindsight between keys: Man I went back and forth a lot this episode huh}

[Veronika talks about Nico planning for the trial] Even though that kinda contradicts what Nico said earlier (I guess maybe they lied, makes sense in retrospect), yeah she’s right (assuming they aren’t wrong about Nico trying to frame Hu). Is she trying to help her newfound bestie, Hu?

“Did they even want to learn to paint?” Poor Rose T_T Also Nico please say something.

“If something was bothering you, you could have talked about it with someone you trusted!” You know, Eden tried to do that with Teruko, and Teruko shot her down. I wonder if that’ll come into play…

“I don’t trust anyone here.” :O Well that’s a reveal.

Woo new Hu sprite! She is breaking down! But bestie please I don’t think you can fix them!

{Yeah I still don’t think I get it? Like if the wire was moving from above the fan to around the broom, there’s nothing stopping it from going from around the broom to above the fan, so Ace would just fall. Did it get caught on the tape somehow? But how would Nico be able to put it around the broom then? Also how does the fan break? The wire would exert force from above and the side, not below, which is what the image makes it look like. I don’t think I understood this I’m so sorry.}

Also are we far enough in to confirm Nico did this by themselves? I don’t have anything against those that believed otherwise, but I personally like it better this way. I imagine the theories aren’t 100% dead, as always, but y’know.

Man, as much as I love the EP 6 CG, it was not clear at all that they were that close, especially when the loose wire seemed closer to the entrance. {Looking back, yeah, I’m just not good at perspective on these rooms. The wires were closer to Ace than it looked}.

… Well there’s the small bit on the end of the loose wire that I’m still not sure how it got there, but close enough!

{Yeah it’s not. Believe it or not, I don’t even think the canon method fully explains the fucking blood.

How the fuck was Nico using this exactly? I imagine the small bit of blood on the end is from the noose (which funnily enough, I kinda called there would be a noose, just got where Ace’s neck would be wrong), so then the middle is the part they used as a garrote. But… then where did the blood on the wire on the fan come from? Where they using both simultaneously?

Am I losing my fucking mind? How is it possible I still don’t understand the evidence even after All That? Has my brain simply rotted? And don’t even get me started on everything that wasn’t brought up! What the hell even is this case?

Then again, it’s midnight when I’m writing these hindsight observations, so I don’t think I’m operating at full brain capacity}

So what else should I say?” Okay crisis averted. Still, this is a really interesting perspective, and I love it a lot. It calls back to Nico not understanding niceties like “please pass the salt,” which, relatable. If they’re not sorry, and Ace won’t get anything out of it, why lie? Very fun.

“D-Do you even regret what you did?” Poor Rose she’s taking this so badly T_T She still doesn’t have an answer as if Nico ever wanted to paint or not.

“I’m not Levi; of course I feel bad about something like that! I’m not heartless!” Yikes on calling Levi heartless, but interesting line for character analysis I guess.

“That was the worst choice that I’ve made in my life.” Wow, really cool new sprite and a lot of Nico info, this is awesome for us Nico enjoyers! (I call myself a Nico enjoyer like I don’t love every single character in the cast lol).

“So I don’t see the point in acting sorry.” Holy shit the sprites and the writing are on point today! {I’m sorry if my commentary’s not exactly thrilling, sometimes I’m just too invested to do anything but stare in awe.}

Rose: “I don’t know how to feel anymore” Sibling can you please give her a fucking answer damn.

“What does this have to do with the case? Everything.” Are we… doing “the pulley was used because they weren’t strong enough to murder otherwise” or…? I don’t know where else this would go.

“Coincidence? Hardly.” Does… Does Teruko already have Eden clocked (heh) as the murderer? No, right? It’s the strength thing probs.

“…They specifically intended for this murder case to be similar to Nico’s murder.” Wait does she actually think it’s Ace or Eden what?

[Non-stop, Bound Wrists] … I have nothing. Nico didn’t bind Ace’s wrists. What is happening.

[Bullet fired] Okay, slight nitpick that I’m pretty sure bothers me and no one else. I get that it’s hard to come up with phrases to shoot bullets at, but “there’s no evidence of that” or some variation is the thing that gets shot in, like, 90% of these Non-Stops Debates. Again, not really important, just wanted to point out a pet peeve of mine.

“One of the pieces of evidence was taken directly from the crime scene…” Oh now we’re bringing up the tape! Teruko didn’t identify it in the spinny thing so I was wondering if she was going to make the connection on her own, but I guess I should have never doubted the Queen.

“I finally figured out what this tape is…” Okay that makes sense. But has she actually clocked (heh x2) that Eden or Ace must have taken it? She’s acting real chill about it.

“It’s the tape from the gym.” (Paraphrased) Woo! It feels super satisfying to finally read those words in a trial setting. Another exceedingly common badjoe W, as they’re who pointed out the tape’s disappearance to me.

“That time Rose and I went to the gym together…” Oh so she knows knows.

“But didn’t MonoTV clean up the gym?” Yeah that would be convenient for you huh. There’s still a chance Ace is the culprit and she’s trying to defend him, but it’s looking rough.

{Actually in retrospect yeah what the fuck?}

“…I attempted to restore the gym to its original condition.” Which would include the tape being there. It might be over chat.

“… why didn’t you recognize it earlier, Rose?” She didn’t look at the crime scene queen. But it was in the trash. Geez Rose is just gonna feel awful after this trial, I’m really interested to see where her character will go.

“Wooow!” Fucking David jumpscare-

[Rose speech] The Rose angst is insane this episode, I’m loving every second. In addition, there might be a line here that could point to Rose!MM. But to keep the habit, I’m not elaborating on that (on this post).

“Rose. You are helpful.” Let me ignore the Terurose agenda for a moment and point out that Teruko’s still being way too chill about this if she’s about to call out Eden. Is she putting on a front? She mentioned hurting when Eden talked to her in the kitchen, so she probably does care, but isn’t letting herself show it? Oof if true.

“That I could be dismissive […] without consequences.” Oh we might be starting the “Teruko learns to trust a bit again” arc sooner than I expected. Cool! Also she’s not about to secret quote us right? {She wasn’t}.

“Thank you, Rose.” Okay I am no longer ignoring the Terurose agenda this ship is about to pop off I feel and I love that.

“…that tells me exactly who the murderer could be.” It might be Edenover.

Select Two People! But she said after Ace ran out, right? Is she gonna point at Ace and Eden, or herself and Eden?

Nope, Ace and Eden. Well, those are the two I landed on!

“It’s you two, right?” [Voice Line] You make it sound like Ace!Accomplice or Eden!Accomplice are even like remotely possible, and I find that funny.

“What’s your reasoning?” Veronika I love you but she’s spent the last ten minutes explaining her reasoning.

By the way, while Teruko’s repeating more or less the same lockdown logic I must have explained in at least three or four different posts (honestly kinda surreal ngl), it’s gonna be really funny if the only reason the class can confidently rule out Teruko as a suspect is because her handwriting sucks too much which is honestly the best argument for her innocence besides protag privilege :v

“I’m the least suspicious because I’ve been helping” is the second best argument lol.

“But to be frank, most of you are incapable of [acting logically]” Tell ‘em Teruko!

I’ll refrain from pointing bv out every suspicious Eden line because I always feel like I’m leaning too much on confirmation bias for it, but let’s be clear, I’m seeing them.

Nico: “Do you expect everyone to believe such an obvious lie?” This really is the Nico episode, huh? But it does make sense for them to push Ace as the culprit, I guess.

[David explains about Teruko’s skepticism] Yeah I guess. But, just so we’re clear: David still thinks the culprit is Ace and is just doing this to make them lose the trial right? Because otherwise what the actual fuck.

[David’s whole Thing] You know, I really thought, I really fucking thought after Ep13, that we would get a break of a few episodes of David Bullshit, but no! What in the ever loving fuck is he even doing anymore???? No theories at this point, it is almost 11 PM where I am I do not have the brainpower to deal with this son of a bitch.

Levi: “Now that I think about it, Eden is in a good position to be Arei’s killer after all.” I feel a scrum debate forming.

“…why would I help it piece [the note] back together…?” I was right to avoid the bias. This line could be perfectly innocent, but the moment I read it, my mind said “she’s saying this too confidently, she had it planned, it’s Edenover.”

“Why… Levi, why?” While I do think Levi!Accomplice just 100% died of it wasn’t dead already, this line does read very funny with the context of that theory.

[Eden Breakdown] Man, {even after how much I’ve been sussing Eden in this and every other episode}, it sure does look like Ace is the culprit huh? Like, this scene is so beautiful and incredible it might just sway me to Ace!Culprit. The CGs are amazing, the music and the voice acting is terribly moving, the dialogue’s fantastic, holy fucking shit. I almost want to cry that was so fantastic. I— I wish I had more words, but that just left me speechless.

I don’t think I could have asked for more, this is just fucking perfect. Nico’s whole thing was great, the Rose angst was unexpected but wholly welcome, the tape reveal was revealed, David… Chiem, and the Eden CG stuff. Just absolutely fantastic all around.

…Slightly miffed the blood on the wires is still somehow not 100% consistent with the described method but WHATEVER it WORKS i do NOT wanna look at those fucking things again.

Theory Updates

Yeah it’s Ace.

Okay that’s dramatic lol. Eden!Culprit is not 100% dead, but off the top of my head, I can’t actually think of anything the characters can use to clear Ace rn. The only reason I believed Eden!Culprit over Ace!Culprit is that I didn’t think Teruko and even Eden could have missed Ace grabbing the tape upon waking up, especially with the sprite disappearing when Eden was on the ground, but… uh… apparently Teruko doesn’t trust herself so much.

With that glaring issue fixed, I actually think Ace!Culprit is significantly more solid than Eden!Culprit. No workaround needed for the BDA, no weird “are they even strong enough to do this” questions, and while the fish paradox Exists, Ace might have thought that putting fish there would make people think of Nico. Which, given the killer also somehow expected the class to figure out the similarities to Nico’s method when only a grand total of four people saw it, one of them being Nico themselves; yeah, I’d think he might be stupid enough for that.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention, Ace waking up before the murder attempt was over solves the issue of him figuring it all out. He actually straight up saw the method, he’d know how to replicate it.

And those Teruko-Eden CGs, man… I always had to really suspend my disbelief on some of Eden’s lines, even with venus’ narrative defense, but… come on. I’ve said this before; I have my limits.

All that added to the fact that Teruko seems to really want to start her “begin to trust again” arc, the fact David pushed for Eden!Culprit… it’s looking Ace!Culprit.

To be clear, there’s still things like Eden’s “Teruko, wait—!” that work better under Eden!Culprit, but I feel those are comparable to other potentially small foreshadowing moments such as Ace being weirdly fixated on the carousel. Eden!Culprit is, again, not fully dead, as other than strength, BDA and fish (all of which have workarounds), there’s not much concrete evidence clearing her. But at this point, I… don’t know. I’ve always felt kinda bad reading scenes like the kitchen talk with Teruko with as much suspicion as I did, but these final CGs, hmm…

Maybe my perspective will change with a clearer mind in the morning, but these are “first impressions” for a reason. They’re not meant to be very cohesive.

And if I’m wrong and it is Eden, well then I’ll have been wrong for a week or two instead of a year, so. Who cares at this point.

Speaking of getting things wrong, the Nico thing. I got Nico!SoloAceAttacker (is that the right notation?) right, and the really obvious stuff like using the stool to reach the fan. I’m also gonna give myself half points for guessing the broom was used to move the wire on the fan all the way back in my first post, but other than that, I did not cook. In my defense, a lot of the evidence (Nico’s missing cloak, the missing tape on the pull-up bar unless it’s somehow the roll, the isolated weights and toppled weight rack, and who knows what else) ended up not mattering in the slightest, which threw me off. Also, I call bullshit on this explaining the blood on the wires, that splatter pattern still doesn’t make sense with what was described. I guess my life isn’t Nico’s after all.

On the other hand, I’m a bit more confident on the remaining aspects of the Arei murder theory now that I believe the culprit is strong enough to pull it all off without issue, but we’ll have to see on that. My guess for culprit ended up changing for now, but the reasoning for arriving at them (tape) was solid, so we’ll see how that pans out.

All in all, immaculate episode. Chef’s kiss. Perfection. Holy shit. See you again soon!
