"a single thread of gold/tied me to you" for ironhusbands?💛
If there is one thing that James Rhodes cannot stand, it is “love at first sight.” In his professional and personal opinion, there is no such thing. It is simply a concept that Disney invented so they could make cutesy stories about princesses finding their princes immediately and give people hope about love, but in the end it is all about the money.
“You’re a cynic,” his sister Jeanie tells him over breakfast. She flings a stray Cheerio at him. “You are a cynic and you’re never gonna date someone because they’re going to think you suck.”
“People are going to date me and realize that I’m a good, realistic choice,” James responds, sticking his tongue out and stealing a drink of her orange juice. “People are going to date you and you’ll be disappointed because you watched too many romantic movies and you let it taint reality.”
“Loser.”
“Dork.”
And then he’s in college.
Surprisingly, he doesn’t meet Tony Stark for two years despite the fact that every single year, they live in the same building on different floors. He has had to evacuate about twenty different times because Tony cannot stop himself from doing experiments in his room.
The third year, James is an RA and required to live with one of the residents because of “experimental tendencies.” They don’t elaborate on why he’s stuck with a roommate, what the tendencies are, or who he is.
“You’ll know,” comes the email from the coordinator, and he has never wanted to curse so badly in an email before, but here he is.
But he’ll deal with it. Just like how he’s going to deal with everything this year.
-
He thought he would get the room to himself for a little while before everyone moved in and brought everything and he would check them in.
But no.
There’s his roommate, lounging on a bed, and grinning.
“Simply enlightening to meet you, James. They told me I could come back if I had a trusted roommate.”
“And they stuck you with me?”
“Well they were going to stick me with some dude who got the email, and then immediately transferred to Dartmouth. So I think you were the second option.”
“Great.”
He hates life, maybe just a little bit.
Tony wants to do things. Which is fine, but he isn’t really in the mood to have the conversation of the fact that he can do things, but he doesn’t want to do them. He has to focus on being an RA and preparing for the Air Force.
“Why prepare for that when you could be living?” Tony asks, lounging on Rhodey’s bed.
Oh yeah, that’s new too. Rhodey. Apparently, “Jim,” “James,” and “Rhodes” were unacceptable nicknames.
What is acceptable is Rhodey. And of course, the “honey bunches of oats” and “loveliest RA of all time in the history of MIT” and “sugar-puff” and “sweetness overload”
He’s responding to all of them, by the way.
Rhodey didn’t think his mental health would get this bad by the beginning. He had actually scheduled it to be around October.
-
And then the students come. There are nervous freshmen, the sophomores who don’t say anything as they move in and get settled, and the returning juniors and seniors greet Rhodey and Tony with familiarity and laugh about the posters that Rhodey’s worked hard on.
“So, we’re having joint-RA’s or something?” Miles asks, throwing his comforter over his bed.
“No, we’re not,” Rhodey says, hoping his expression is somewhere along the lines of not-showing-emotion. “Tony’s just...”
“I’m simply too exhausting for Housing to deal with anymore, so I have a babysitter,” Tony says with a wink. “And who better than our lovely Rhodey?”
“Don’t call me that.”
“Sugar-puff?”
“Still no.”
Miles snorts.
“This year should be good. Tony, you gonna pull any fire alarms this year?”
“Rhodey has expressly banned experiments in the building, unfortunately,” Tony sighs. “It’s like he doesn’t want everyone to bond over having to leave at two in the morning...”
“Nothing says bonding like hating a rude wake-up call,” Rhodey says, and Tony nods. “We’ll let you get all moved in, Miles. Remember that floor dinner is at six!”
“You got it!”
Rhodey gives Tony a look.
“You know, I can do this on my own.”
“Aw shutterbug, I’m not gonna let you.”
“Are you really this intent on following me around?”
“Well, what if I want to overtake your position next year? What if you tragically get a raging headache and it’s up to me to know what to do? What if your mother kidnaps you and never lets you come here again?”
“I’m sure the college kids will be fine,” Rhodey stresses. “And I’ll still have access to email and the groupchat, genius.”
Tony just laughs.
“Alright, okay. I gotta go get some shit for my new class. The teacher sent out an email stating that the textbook is mandatory, and we have to do book work. This feels like eighth grade all over again.”
Rhodey snorts.
“Is it for Professor Casper?”
“Yeah, did you have him?”
“Yeah, you don’t need the book. You can find it online for free, and he never collects the book work. It’s a waste of time to get the book.”
“You’re an angel-and-a-half, love of my life,” Tony says. “And for that, I’ll snag an extra pudding for you at the dining hall.”
“Is it vanilla or chocolate this time?”
“Chocolate with cookies in it.”
“Oh my god, seriously? Already?”
“Guess they must have had a jump,” Tony teases. “I’ll see you at dinner.”
-
Tony has a specific way of getting people to open up and actually talk with others that Rhodey envies.
If Tony wasn’t so hellbent on convincing the group that if Miles and Kamala create a distraction, they could totally sneak out one of the pictures of the mascot.
“We are not doing that the first week,” Rhodey says. “Maybe the last.”
“It’s a beaver,” Tony whines. “Who’s gonna miss it, a Canadian?”
“It’ll be the floor bonding activity,” Gwen says, finishing off her fifth (maybe sixth) slice of pizza. “Better than talking about your feelings about the campus or whatever.”
“No.”
“We’ll convince him soon,” Tony whispers conspiratorially. “Also, who here is a freshman? I have some advice regarding the math classes and which teacher you want...”
-
Rhodey does have to admit, that sometimes it’s easier to have Tony around, who is so willing to stay up until the late hours because of some stupid drama or to help Peter at his chemistry homework and also ease his anxiety about leaving his Aunt May all alone.
Tony isn’t all wild and crazy as stories have led him up to be.
"I wore out all my crazy freshman year after going to two frat parties and deciding that no one knew anything about how to have fun,” he declared. “I mean, come on. Why have beer pong when you could quiz people about obscure fashion facts?”
Rhodey snorts.
“Don’t make that the next game night. Hey, what do you think about having a movie night this Friday? I’m thinking something not scary, we’ve been doing a lot of those.”
“It is October, what do you mean not scary?”
“Some of our residents don’t like scary,” Rhodey reminds him. “Honestly, I think we could do with a bit of Halloween fun.”
“Hocus Pocus? Double Double, Toil and Trouble? If you want to be slightly scared of old women and clown parties, I’d recommend it.”
“You weren’t scared of clowns beforehand?”
“Of course not, I wanted what they have; the ability to fit eighteen people in a car.”
“Couldn’t you just gut the car?”
“Not the same effect, honey-pie. Not the same effect.”
Miles and Peter both end up lobbying for Hocus Pocus, with little to no competition other than a promise that the other choice would be shown later on in the semester.
They’ve shoved all the chairs together and multiple people have brought out their own chairs, and Tony saves a seat for Rhodey under the premise of “Rhodey organized it, he gets a seat.”
It’s a tough squeeze, and Tony and Rhodey get all tangled up together.
Tony smells like expensive cologne and coffee, and he grins up at Rhodey and maybe the lights from the TV aren’t bright enough, but for a moment his heart skips a beat.
Well. Shit.
When he goes home for Thanksgiving break, Tony seems a bit...sad.
“What, your mom cook the worst turkey in the world?” he jokes.
"Sure,” Tony says, eyes unfocused. “Yeah.”
"Dude, you okay?”
“Yeah,” Tony says, turning. His smile brightens, eyes crinkling. “Why wouldn’t I be fine, buttercup?”
Rhodey gives him a look.
“I’m gonna call you when I get home, okay? You better answer.”
“I always answer to you,” Tony says, and damn Rhodey’s mind shouldn’t be going where it is.
Rhodey waves, gets in his car, and thinks about how Tony most likely has a problem on his mind, how he should probably not room with him, and his Aunt Ada’s green beans.
God, he loves those green beans.
-
Tony is alone for Thanksgiving. Jarvis and Ana got an opportunity to visit Aunt Peggy in England, and he knew that they hadn’t seen her in two years. He didn’t want to be selfish, have them stay just for him.
So, it looked like deli turkey sandwiches were in his future. If there’s still some soda in the fridge, maybe that too.
He sighs, and turns towards the lab. Dum-E’s not even here, as he didn’t fit in the travel car, so Tony let him loose on the floor to “keep guard” over the dorms and make sure that no one broke in or stole the cords that he knows he accidentally left in the common room.
The odd thing is, he had almost told Rhodey. Almost let him know that he’d be alone for Thanksgiving, but is that weird? That’s weird, right? To tell people your emotions just...it’s so messy.
They have to deal with it, you have to deal with the fact that they’re dealing with it, and then other people know that you both are dealing with it and it’s just a whole mess of epic proportions, you know?
-
Rhodey finds out on Thanksgiving, when they’re doing the parade on the TV and there’s a new snippet on the gossip channel when they go on commercial break.
Howard and Maria Stark, vacationing off the Mediterranean Coast.
“It’s reported that Tony Stark has preferred to spend his time in the vacation home,” the news reporter said, her smile wide and placid.
“Tony’s lucky,” Mama says, wrapping golden yarn around her fingers as she works on another sweater. (A small one, a tiny one. It’s for the new baby in the family for Christmas.) “He tell you about it?”
“He’s not there,” Rhodey says numbly.
“He’s not?” Dad says, eyes raised over the newspaper.
“No.”
“He didn’t tell you, did he?” Dad asks.
“No, no he didn’t.”
“Well then. Next time he’ll come with us.”
Rhodey nods.
“Christmas?”
“Clear it with his parents if they’re not spending time together.”
“Got it.”
-
Rhodey’s Thanksgiving is...nice. He can’t stop thinking about Tony going alone.
So he calls him. It’s two in the morning, he might be asleep, and Rhodey’s not sure if he got the “eight” in the last four digits right or not.
“Howard’s out, who is it?” comes a sleep-addled voice.
“Good thing I’m not looking for Howard, Tones.”
“Rhodey? Why are you calling me?” Tony asks, and Rhodey can imagine his eyes lighting up and that’s...that’s something.
“You spent Thanksgiving alone, I wanted to see how you were.”
“Aw, checking in your residents?”
“Checking in on you.”
Tony stills for a moment at the phone.
Besides Jarvis, no one had ever really checked in on him.
“Um, I’m fine?”
“You sure?”
“Yeah. I mean, it sucks to be alone on Thanksgiving, but I don’t really like any of the foods that people usually have, so I’ve been fine. I ordered wraps from my favorite place.”
“Good to hear, good to hear.”
There’s a silent pause for a moment, the one where they both try to find something to say.
“Listen,” Rhodey says. “If you’re ever stuck for a holiday alone, you’re coming with me, okay?”
“I don’t want to intrude on your family,” Tony says softly.
“They all wanna meet you. Jeanie says she can kick your ass at ice hockey!”
“You guys can actually play ice hockey?”
“With limited degrees of success.”
“Oh, now that I gotta see some time.”
-
They come back to college, and Tony is back to his usual antics, greeting everyone who comes through the elevator with a shower of shredded paper.
“Welcome to Winter Wonderland! Next stop: suffering through finals!”
“Ugh,” Kamala groans, “stop it. Stop making me think. I have to memorize Byronic poetry. Do you know how boring that is?”
"Speak for yourself, I have to build a wooden chair,” Riri whines. “Who works with wood these days? It’s so old-fashioned.”
“Create the most bitching chair alive,” Tony says. “And I’ll help you with the necessary tools. Your professor isn’t expecting much, mainly just that it can support the weight of two people, you’ll be fine. Kam, Byronic poetry is not that bad, you will be good. We will bake cookies.”
“Can we even bake cookies? I thought our floor got banned from kitchen usage,” Peter says. “Hey Rhodey.”
“Hey kiddo,” Rhodey says. “First of all, yes we are banned from the kitchen. Second, we’re only banned and get in trouble so long as they know we’re there. And since more than half of us are nocturnal creatures and I am willing to wake up to help, we can bake cookies.”
There are cheers around the room, and Tony mocks offense.
“You don’t trust me to help the future youth?”
“Given that we’re not allowed to rent out any more equipment from the front office? Yes.”
“You wound me, darling.”
“Only as much as kitchen equipment goes, sweetheart.”
Tony grins.
“Aw, you missed me.”
“Yeah, I did. Now come on, you gotta help me with a billboard about the movie night this Friday. We thinking a romantic comedy or something mildly terrifying but probably won an award?”
“Mildly terrifying!” Gwen calls from her dorm. “If we watch two people falling in love I’ll choke! We’ve been doing it all year!”
“We’ve only watched, like, three rom-coms?”
Gwen rolls her eyes, as if he’s missed something completely obvious.
“You don’t get it. I’ll try again later. Hey, are we doing floor dinner tonight?”
“They’re serving pizza sandwiches, so obviously,” Tony says. “We will feast like kings.”
-
Christmas is a festive time for Tony. He loves it, and goes overboard with decorations. Rhodey lets him, because you can’t stop Tony once he loves something (and Rhodey is kind of. Fond of him).
Pepper comes up from the fifth floor, whistling.
“Damn, Jim. I knew you would do a good job with decorations, but not this good. Is this...did you buy a miniature village? How was this budgeted?”
“It wasn’t,” Rhodey says. “Tony’s really into Christmas and the floor convinced him that the theme should be Christmas Village. He’s been crafting identities for each villager instead of studying for any exam. The craft store employees know him by name now.”
“Well, we all have our vices. You two seem to get along well. Housing is pleased that he hasn’t blown up anything yet.”
“If they try to serve cheese ravioli again, he might.”
“That’s a problem for Dining,” Pepper reminds him.
“Still, it’s abominable. Where did they get them, bottom of the Hudson River?”
She snorts, adjusting her shirt.
“Probably, but hey. They still got eaten, even if that one freshman threw them all back up at the entrance.”
“It was payback, they were vile.”
Tony waltzes into the lobby, arms filled with glittering tinsel.
“We are not letting you hang that,” Pepper says, gaping at it all. “Do you know how hard it is to get rid of tinsel?”
“We’ll manage!” Tony says. “Also, are you free at six-thirty?”
“No, that’s when we’re getting dinner on my floor, what do you need?”
“Just that little tidbit of knowledge,” Tony says, looking down at his phone.
A message buzzes from the groupchat, and Rhodey glances at it:
We are a go for the real Christmas tree. I have the vacuum, and a believable lie. Rhodey’s gonna tell us when the RA on duty is gonna come so we can hide it.
Rhodey looks at Tony, grinning. He smiles right back.
“Is there some weird roommate telekinesis I’m missing here?” Pepper asks.
“Yes,” Rhodey says. “We’re discussing dinner plans.”
Another text from Harley:
I’m already picking one out with Peter. I have good taste. When is the ornament-making party?
Pepper looks at them.
“You’re planning something that I probably would have to disapprove of. I’ll tell people I got your floor watched tonight.”
“Pepper, light of my life, my absolute sunshine? You’re the best,” Tony says, grinning. “Rhodey-darling, help me with tinsel?”
He can’t say no. Simple as that.
That is how tinsel gets strung throughout his hair as he’s watching Tony climb onto chairs that shouldn’t be climbed on to hang it from everywhere.
“People deserve to have a good-looking Christmas,” he says. “Besides, I wanna win the decoration contest.”
Rhodey laughs.
“Okay, okay. I think we got it in the bag.”
Later on in the week, Tony can be seen flitting about from room to room with help and jokes to lighten the mood.
Rhodey has to admit, being an RA with Tony around is...nice. Better than he thought.
And maybe he has feelings. He’s not going to say anything about it. After all, they’re roommates. He also isn’t allowed to have a relationship with anyone on the floor, regardless of anything.
It doesn’t mean every RA follows it. God knows Sharon’s snuck down to the fourth floor to see Sam near-about every night, and her residents usually keep it a pretty good secret.
Still. There’s also everything else to consider, and the fact that he doesn’t even know if Tony likes him like that.
He doesn’t have to focus on it.
-
At least, not until the week of finals when he’s dying and Tony’s made him peppermint hot chocolate and sits on his bed, just about an inch away from his notes for his history class.
“Do you remember what you told me on the phone?” Tony asks softly.
“You up to compete against Jeanie for this year’s ice hockey championship?” Rhodey asks, smiling.
Tension releases from Tony’s shoulders.
“Only so long as you’ll have me.”
“Always, genius. Always.”
-
After the last resident leaves for the holiday and Rhodey checks in with those who are staying, he and Tony hit the road, dragging suitcases behind them.
“Are you sure I’m allowed?” Tony asks. “I can always find a hotel along the way...”
“Mama wants to meet you, I keep telling them a ton about you,” Rhodey says, laughing. “They told me they want to hear your side of the great Glitter Debacle.”
Tony laughs.
“You mean the truth?”
“Uh, I’m sorry, how are you going to convince them that green glitter was needed? And that you could clean it out of carpet?”
“Determination and grit?”
Rhodey laughs again as they pull onto the highway.
-
After a couple of hours, they make it to Rhodey’s home. His sister comes out, hugs for both.
“Good to meet you Tony,” Jeanie says. “I’ve heard a lot, and I think we’re going to get along awesomely after I tell you every single embarrassing thing that Jim’s ever done.”
“Only if I get to share stories too,” Tony teases, grinning. “Aw, they call you Jim?”
“What do you call him?” Jeanie asks.
“Jim-Jam, angel-dear, sugar-puff, Rhodey. You know, the usual.”
Jeanie snorts, taking one of Rhodey’s bags.
“Calling you the first one from now on.”
“Tony did you have to let her hear any of those?” Rhodey asks, exasperated in a teasing manner.
“Of course I did,” Tony sing-songed. “Now after you, I’m sure your mom is waiting to hug the living daylights out of you.”
-
It’s not until Rhodey gets all settled in and Tony is downstairs competing with his dad in a round of chess that Jeanie sits on his bed, the intention to annoy.
But it’s...different. She looks at him.
“You love him a lot, don’t you?”
Rhodey stills.
“You wouldn’t have told him he could come here if you didn’t.”
“You’re right.”
“I’m always right,” Jeanie says, flipping braids over her shoulder. “Nice of you to finally realize that I’m the smart one.”
Rhodey doesn’t say anything as she saunters out of the room.
He makes the decision not to tell Tony.
If it goes wrong and if Tony says no, he doesn’t want it to be an awkward family event but more importantly, the most awkward rest of the year ever. He can say it as they’re moving out, and that’s that.
He tells Jeanie as such.
“I thought you didn’t believe in love,” she says as they’re preparing the soup for dinner.”
“I don’t believe in love at first sight,” Rhodey says. “I do believe in love. There’s a difference.”
There’s a hell of a difference.
First sight, you don’t know everything. The second, third, fourth, fifth, and so on? Oh you learn so much more, and they become that more important.
He learns that he doesn’t mind picking up tinsel, so long as Tony is laughing and singing along to all of the worst Christmas songs ever, and maybe. Just maybe he could picture looking at Tony underneath the fairy-lights that they hung in the dorm room for all time.
Love is terrifyingly exhilarating, even when it isn’t supposed to be.
Rhodey did not think his heart would race so much as Tony listened to his Mama talk about her wedding china, about the utter disaster that his father was.
“He forgot his tie,” Mama said, smiling. “Oh my lord, my mother had a cow about that. I thought he looked kind of dashing.”
Tony’s eyes drift towards the wedding pictures, which are slightly shaky, but everyone had such wide smiles.
It’s a far cry from the publicity photos from the Stark wedding, Rhodey remembers the solemn expressions, the stuff tuxedos.
“I love it,” Tony says softly. He looks at Rhodey across the table, setting down the final plate. “Tell me more, Mrs. Rhodes.”
“Call me Mama, honey, Mrs. Rhodes is for people I don’t like that much. I think you’re gonna be my new favorite.”
“Even over me?” Jeanie says, grinning as she kisses Dad on the cheek. “I’m your favorite.”
“You’re my favorite until now,” Mama says. “Don’t think I don’t know that you skipped out on setting the table because Tony was here and graciously offered.”
“It was nothing,” Tony says. “Just happy to help. Thank you for letting me stay at your home for the holidays.”
“We’re always lucky to have guests,” Dad says, setting down the main dish. “Now let’s eat.”
Family dinner is a brand new concept to Tony. He’s had maybe four or five of them, and the majority of which were staged for some holiday shoot or some “celebrating American values” shoot.
It was awkward, weird, and he didn’t get why.
Now, he does. Jeanie has been steadily moving mashed potatoes away from Rhodey’s plate, and Mama caught her eye and winked, distracting him with talk about his college major and news about the neighbors.
Mr. Rhodes watches it all with a careful eye and a lax smile.
After dinner, they play cards.
It should be boring, but Jeanie puts on an old record and Rhodey keeps trying to count cards, and Tony didn’t think you could count cards in a game of Spoons.
“You can’t, he’s just a try-hard,” Jeanie stage-whispers.
“You-”
Jeanie laughs, rolling herself out of Rhodey’s grasp as he chases her around the family room. Tony leans back into the couch, and shouts with surprise as Jeanie trips Rhodey into the couch.
His body twists, and Rhodey’s facing him on the couch and they’re close and with the fire roaring in the fireplace and the Christmas lights outside shining through the windows, it’s almost magic.
It is magic, but Rhodey is kind of terrified of that.
Tony breathes in, breathes out.
“Hello sugar-puff,” he says.
“Hello genius,” Rhodey says, a smile on his face.
Oh.
The night does not get much sleep.
Tony doesn’t sleep anyway, but Rhodey finds that quite often he can’t sleep without some softly-playing rock in the background, doesn’t matter if it is a highly-questionable AC/DC song. That and Tony softly murmuring about his plans, and it’s like a personalized lullaby.
Rhodey cannot sleep. Tony’s in the guest room, and he can’t sleep.
There’s a soft knock on his door.
Tony’s there in shorts and a t-shirt that’s probably expensive, but he’ll never say if it is or not.
“Can I...I can’t sleep.”
“Get in here, Tones. I can’t sleep either.”
The bed is a tight squeeze, but they make it work.
Rhodey whispers until he drifts off to sleep about Christmas and school and everything else.
Tony watches with quiet eyes, interjecting with his own stories occasionally.
They fall asleep tangled up together, and Rhodey doesn’t mind it one bit, not as he pulls Tony in closer.
-
Waking up is bittersweet, honestly. Rhodey has Tony in his arms, and that’s...that’s perfect. He thinks this is going to be the best thing that’s ever happened in his lifetime.
“It’s too early, darling,” Tony groans. The light from outside is already peeking through the blinds, and he has stuffed his head right back into a pillow.
“Jeanie’ll be here soon to bother us for Christmas breakfast,” Rhodey says. “And unless you want her pouncing on the bed and landing on wrong everything, we better get down there.”
Tony smiles sleepily, stretching.
“Thanks for letting me sleep in your room, honey-bunch.”
“No problem,” Rhodey said. “Missed the constant AC/DC and late-night discussions about robotics.”
“Not like I did much talking, Mr. Sap,” Tony teased. “Or was it me who mentioned that they had a favorite plate for dinner?”
“Listen, it’s superior and you did not once interrupt that story to complain. I think I did a great job explaining it.”
Tony laughs.
“I’m gonna go get dressed, okay?”
“Not until after present unwrapping,” Rhodey says. “We stay in pajamas.”
“I’m cold,” Tony whines.
Rhodey chucks his sweatshirt at him.
“Then here you go.”
Tony’s eyes light up as he shrugs it on, wiggling as he brings it up to his nose. It shouldn’t be that cute. But it is.
“You are the light of my life.”
Rhodey laughs, rolling his eyes.
“Maybe. Now come on.”
They head downstairs together, and they both get swept up into the speed of things, with Jeanie racing around the house and telling Tony that he got treats too, they just didn’t have a back-up stocking.
“Hush,” Mr. Rhodes says, handing Tony a carefully wrapped gift. “After breakfast, we’ll go ahead and open it.”
He smiles, and Rhodey thinks it’s the best thing he’ll ever see.
-
Christmas gifts, Rhodey thinks, are his new favorite thing to see Tony interact with.
It’s painfully obvious that he’s never really had any personal gifts, anything that reminds people of himself. He carefully unwraps the paper, careful not to rip it.
“You nerd,” Rhodey says, grinning. “Come on, show us what you got.”
Tony laughs as he opens a box with two coffee mugs from the rest of the family, emblazoned with “Rhodes” on one cup, and the other being a simple red with gold trim.
“They’re perfect,” he says. “Thank you so much.”
“You’re feeding his coffee addiction,” Rhodey answers.
“Like you aren’t doing the same,” Jeanie teases. “You made him his cups of coffee this morning.”
“That is because I have trained him well,” Tony says, grinning. “Rhodey, here’s my present to you, open it.”
He’s nervous.
Both of them are, but Tony especially so.
He told Rhodey once that he’s not good at shopping for other people. He tends to have the phrase “go big or go home” permanently circling in his mind, and it can lead to...complications.
(Rhodey remembers the overhaul of his closet for his birthday, complete with a visit from a rather well-known designer.)
Inside is a beautiful jacket. It’s all patchwork, artfully sewn together with embroidery thread spelling out “James” at the lapel.
“I commissioned Janet,” Tony says, smiling softly. “She wants you to still walk in her fashion show, by the way. Says you’re a model.”
Rhodey snorts, shrugging on the jacket.
“You helped with this, right?” Rhodey says. “I can see it in the gold thread you got on the sleeves.”
“I may have had some creative input.”
“I love it,” Rhodey says. “Now here’s mine.”
Tony breathes, and Rhodey wonders if this gift will be enough. He feels a bit stupid, it doesn’t seem like that great of a gift, in retrospect-
It’s a puzzle.
A puzzle of their favorite cafe and restaurant to go to at MIT. It was in a shop window, and Rhodey could tell that Tony would love it.
On top is a scarf, since Tony gave away his last one to another student in their philosophy class.
“I love it,” Tony breathes, tackling Rhodey in a hug. “I love it, I love it! We have to do the puzzle after this.”
Mrs. Rhodes sends her husband a look.
Yeah, Tony would be around for a long time.
-
They set up the puzzle on the floor of Rhodey’s room, clearing away any luggage. It’s silent for a while, Tony moving around the pieces and Rhodey looking for edge pieces.
They work closely together, side by side.
Rhodey can’t stop staring.
He should be able to. He’s stopped himself before, but now?
Sunlight is coming in through the window, playing around Tony’s fingers as he nimbly picks up puzzle pieces, and this is the eternity that Rhodey wants so badly. If he died right now, he thinks he would choose for Heaven to look like this.
“You okay?” Tony asks, eyes looking up. He took his contacts out, and now he’s just in his tortoiseshell glasses, the ones that he secretly likes more and Rhodey loves.
“I’m in love with you,” Rhodey blurts out, because he can’t stop thinking about how beautiful Tony is and how much he loves him.
He realizes that this could very well be considered a mistake. Because they still have to live together and drive back together and it won’t be the same, and the residents will notice no matter how well they both act--
Tony pops his head right under Rhodey’s chin.
“Kiss me?”
That’s all it takes.
They mess up part of the puzzle, but that’s okay. They find they don’t mind it too much. They can work on it later, when Tony’s done getting Rhodey out of his new jacket and Rhodey works his hands underneath Tony’s sweatshirt.
-
Mama takes one look at them for dinner and grins.
“Jeanie, you owe me a night of dish-washing.”
“Seriously?”
“Mama!” Rhodey hisses, embarrassed beyond belief.
Tony just cackles, and elbows Rhodey out of the way so he can get to his chair at the table.
“Couldn’t have fooled you for a second, could we?” Tony teases.
“Not at all,” Mama states proudly.
Rhodey rolls his eyes and squeezes Tony’s hand under the table. All will be well.
-
When they both get back to college, none of their residents are surprised, at least not until they have to have a “knocking before entering” policy put in place after one particular late morning.

Willie JATP is a Hacker: The Manifesto - Part One
all right, kids. it's time to do the thing i made this blog for, mostly because one (1) person indulged this hc (@crybabyddl this is your fault). as always, thanks to the ghost squad server for putting up with my rambling as i put this post together.
but the tl;dr is: willie jatp was one of the early generation of hackers as well as a skater, and this is how it happened.
edit: if anyone wants to use any parts of the as basis for fic/art/contente in general, feel free! please tag me and i'll boost it and make the rest of the ghost squad boost it ^_^
readmore below this line ^_^
first things first, my headcanon is that willie died in 1989 at the age of 19 (missed the moon landing by just a wee bit, which he's highkey bitter about).
second things second, his parents were college professors in the 70s with access to computers and ARPAnet (precursor to the internet that connected several major US universities).
and third things third, willie grew up spending time in his parents' classrooms and offices because they homeschooled him. mostly because he struggled in a regular classroom setting due to adhd and being a gifted kid tm.
anyways. so he's in the lab with his parents. chilling. when they get a message from a colleague at MIT (blech). and his parents, wanting to encourage his curiousity, let five-year-old willie send a message back.
this was, as the kids say, a Mistake.
willie became FASCINATED with computers. absolutely enthralled. so when one of the computers in his dad's lab broke and was written off by the university, willie went dumpster diving for it, snuck into an electrical engineering lab, and fixed it.
he was 9 at the time.
his parents, being supportive and also very happy to have something safe (hah!) to keep their son occupied, got him a programming guide and set him loose in their friend's office, a computer scientist who was amused by the small child in the corner with his computer and let him borrow whatever books he wanted. he learned very quickly how the computer worked... and how it differed from the way it was SUPPOSED to work. he became OBSESSED with that gap.
(he also became the unofficial anthropology department tech support, but that's another story)
when he's 15, the movie War Games comes out, and really thrusts computer hackers into the public's consciousness... and willie's. willie discovers that his little programs that took advantage of gaps in his computer's programming could be used for a purpose, rather than just to prove a concept. at the same time, the internet was beginning to boom at universities, which meant that willie, the unofficial tech support of the anthropology department, had a direct line to a major university's internet connection.
this was, as the kids say, Another Mistake.
("but when does he start skating, lilac?!" hush, children. we're getting there.)
willie made a few friends online. hacker friends. hacker friends who were part of one of the many hacker collectives to spring up in the 80s. it was his first time Having Friends, so of course when they decided to hack a major corporation as a joke, willie went right along with them.
this was, as the kids say, Another, Much Larger Mistake.
two months later, at 1 AM, the FBI broke down his front door, confiscated his computer equipment, and arrested him. He managed to avoid going to jail because he wass only 16, but he was banned from using the internet until 1990. his parents were... displeased, to say the least. his computer, they said, was not his until he earned enough money to replace the front door's hinges, which had suffered rather catastrophic damage when it got. yknow. kicked in.
willie was not a fan of that, and had already been barred from his main motivator for using his computer, since violating the terms of his sentence would mean (at best) being forced to work for the feds or (at worst) actually going to jail this time.
his mom was one of the original skateboarders, who could rival tony hawk in straight-up skill. one weekend, when he was complaining about being bored and missing his friends (many of whom were now in jail), his mom dragged him to the skate park and taught him to skate.
willie got good. really good. he was competing in the local scene, hoping to make it to the x games.
then. well.
he died.

BTR: Patie //Ficlet// Break Out, Break Loose
Ficlet Notes: Set during 3x08, Big Time Babysitting
Pairing: Patie - Katie Knight and Patrick Jackson (OC)
Summary: With James and Carlos, sometimes it’s easier for Katie to tell them one thing to their face and mean another. A trip to the convenience store to play an arcade game was easier for them to understand than telling them she was going out to meet a boy.
Authored By: Rhuben
Tag List: Just tagging people I know who are BTR fans, or wanted to read more for the Jacksons @mystic-scripture @witchofinterest @juliesdahlias
Katie closed her eyes, sucked in a deep breath of air, when James and Carlos activated their “sister force field” on her. She tilted her head back and let out a loud groan. The stupid “Katie Cage” again.
She should have seen it coming. She had to give them props, they did take their responsibilities seriously. But then again, they took their jobs too seriously! And it wasn’t like they had little sisters to they even knew what they were talking about. At least Kendall had figure out how to handle her a long time ago: leave her alone, give her access to food, maybe monitor her online gaming habits, and everything was all good.
But this?! Katie tried to duck under James and Carlos’s arms but they shifted quickly, cutting her off before she could really move. Quickly straightening, she tried to step over them and found herself being carried away from the door and dropped haphazardly onto the couch. With a huff of annoyance, she crossed her arms over her chest. This was just going too far!
“You can pout all you want, Katie, but we’re not letting you leave this apartment,” James said, lifting an eyebrow before staring her down with one of his neurotic stares.
She wasn’t going to pout. She was just going to get even more frustrated. All she wanted to do was go down to the convenience store and play an arcade game. She basically had free ranger of the whole entire Palm Woods. She even crawled through air ducts and rolled around in laundry carts for fun. So what was so hard about the idea of her going to the convenience store to play an arcade game by herself?
“Ok, ok,” she said, putting her hands up defensively, “I get it. You want me to stay here.” She wiggled her grimy fingers. “Can I at least wash my hands? Those air ducts were very filthy.” Once James and Carlos let her go, she stepped past them and into the bathroom. “Idiots.”
Katie immediately turned on the bathtub and sink faucets.Placing her hands on the edges of the sink, she let out a deep sigh and looked at her reflection in the mirror. Brown hair. Brown eyes. Dull. Boring. Not anything like the beach babes here in California. Why would one of the hottest guys on the planet want to spend time with someone like her?
Lifting her hands she brushed her hair behind her ears, then pulled it forward in front of her shoulders, and then gathered her hair into her hands behind her head in a ponytail, turning her head this way and that. Then, her shoulders dropped, and she let out a sigh through her nose, dropping her hair.
Still, she reasoned, he wants to spend time with you. Her stomach started twisting at the thought. And her heartbeat quickened. She twisted her mouth to the side, trying to stop herself from smiling too wide. You! Out of everybody in LA! Biting down on her lower lip, she lifted up onto the balls of her feet in excitement and proceeded to wash her hands. Afterwards she put on a little bit of eyeliner, some lip gloss, and a spritz of perfume. Riley had warned her over and over, not to wear so much makeup that she looked like she was wearing a mask.
“Wear just enough,” Riley had coached, carefully brushing the tip of an eyepencil across Katie’s lower eyelids, “to make your eyes glow, yeah? Brown eyes aren’t boring, mate.”
“It feels like you’re scratching my eyeballs out,” Katie had complained. She didn’t get the whole wearing makeup thing like a lot of girls her age at the Palm Woods did. Their eyebrows looked more like airplane landing strips than eyebrows. Still, he wasn’t going to go to her mom for it, lest she wanted the “You’re growing up so fast” speech again.
“The burning means its working,” Riley had quoted. She had cracked a grin before carefully blowing at Katie’s eyes. “Ah, reckon I just need to sharpen the pencil. Otherwise, you’re all set!” She had grabbed Katie’s shoulders and finally turned her towards the mirror.
Katie’s results at her own hand wasn’t as good as how Riley had made her look, but overall she was still happy. Her eyes did seem lighter, and have a certain glow to them. Clasping her fingers together on the sink, she let out a cleansing breath and then wiped her suddenly clammy hands on the towel before making her escape.
The closer she got to the convenience store, the more nervous she found herself getting. First with constantly adjusting the strap to her bag to make sure it wasn’t pulling at her hair. Then stopping in the windows of each store she passed to check her hair and that she wasn’t sweating off her makeup. Checking that her clothes hung on her in a flattering way. Most importantly, that she didn’t smell. But none of that did anything to quell the super-sized gigantic butterflies that flapped around in her stomach and tickled her ribs the second she spotted him waiting outside the convenience store.
Only someone like the Patrick Jackson could for look so cool just waiting outside of a store. It was unfair how someone like him could wear a simple sweatshirt (with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows), a black and yellow plaid shirt tied around his waist, and distressed dark wash jeans and look like he just stepped off the pages of a magazine. Whereas anyone else could try it and look like they didn’t know how to dress themselves.
Still, the lopsided grin he gave her as she walked up to him, equally calmed her nerves, and made her suddenly want to give in to the giggles that had risen up in her chest.
Don’t get ahead of yourself, she thought, this isn’t a date. You’re just hanging out.
“Hey,” he greeted, shoving his hands into his jeans pockets. “You made it.”
“I said I’d be here,” Katie said with a shrug, “and I’m here.”
“Cool.” Patrick reached up a hand to scratch the back of his neck, adjusting the collar of his sweatshirt.
“Yeah.” Katie slowly nodded, pressing her lips together. She lifted up onto the balls of her feet before lowering. “So, you want to go play?”
“Yeah, sure,” Patrick replied. They reached for the door handle at the same time. Katie quickly snatched her hand back, feeling her face burn.
“Sorry.”
“S’cool,” Patrick replied with a shrug, pulling the door open. Cool air washed over them and he motioned her inside. Katie gave him a smile of thanks, stepping across the threshold of the store, completely aware of the hand he gently placed on the small of her back. “I just hope you’re ready to lose.”
Katie snorted, rolling her eyes. She hit him in the chest with the back of her hand for good measure. “I’ll have you know that I’ve never lost a game,” she said. She prodded Patrick in the chest. “In fact, that’s why I’m not allowed to play Biohazard Blast anymore.”
“And you just took all that into online poker, right? Patrick asked, lifting an eyebrow, massaging his chest with his hand. Katie grinned, shrugging her shoulders modestly. “Try growing up in my family. You don’t know competitiveness. It’s why Ronan banned us from playing laser tag, or glow golf. Or darts. Or go karts. Or really anything he reckons we can come up with when we’re bored. It was too much of a blood bath.”
“We’ll just see about that,” Katie said with a challenging smile. “Loser buys ice cream?”
“Done.” Patrick patted his hands with his stomach. “I haven’t eaten yet today, but I know you hate spending money, so I won’t make you buy a lot.”
“What a gentleman,” Katie said deadpan and Patrick laughed.
“Ladies first,” he said, motioning for her to lead the way to the arcade games section. He fell into step beside her. They were both silent for a moment. Then he said, “Um, by the way, your makeup looks nice today.”
“Thanks.” Katie gave him a quick smile. “I was just trying some stuff out. That’s all.”
-----
“Hey, guys,” Katie chirped, wiggling her fingers in a small wave, spotting James and Carlos at the end of the hallway. She quickly slipped into Apartment 2J, trying to hide the wide smile on her face. She already had to force herself to walk as normally as possible, to stop herself from wanting to skip.
God, she couldn’t believe just spending some time with a boy made her so giddy.
She couldn’t help but laugh at the confused looks and incoherent babbling James and Carlos went through as they tried to understand how she had managed to slip out of the Palm Woods apartment. They really were idiots; she had watched them as she grew up. How else could she have figured out how to disappear from one place and pop up in another without being detected?
Still, it was easier to just tell them what they wanted to hear: “It’s way more fun hanging out with you guys than playing some stupid game at a convenience store.” She followed that up with a simple smile and an offer to finish the puzzle they were working on. They would need all the help they could get with it, anyway. Just as she settled a piece into the already built border, she felt her phone vibrate against her hip and she removed it from her pocket.
Glancing back and forth between James and Carlos who were bent far over the table, searching for the next piece to the puzzle, she settled back against the couch cushions, holding her phone close to her face.
Patrick: Had fun today. Rematch?
Katie: Anytime, anywhere
Katie: And thanks for walking me back to the PW
She paused for a moment, thumbs hovering over the screen to decide which emoji would be best to use. A smiley face? Because she was happy that he offered. A winky face? Because it was a short walk, and it wasn’t like she was goign to get lost. No emoji at all? His response saved her the trouble.
Patrick: Anytime, anywhere
Katie: :)

I Love Him, Your Honor
summary: During college, Richie works part time at a law office for the sole reason it pays well, and he honestly thinks it’s utter hell. But then he meets another part time employee who works down in the file room and, well, maybe the law office isn’t completely hellish. words: 4.5k a/n: i honestly don’t even know why i’m posting this but hey i made an ao3 account finally and you can read this on there if you want! richie’s part time job is purely based off of mine; i got this idea yesterday when leaving and just ran with it, and thus this chapter was born. idk when the next chapter will be up but pls give this love
chapter one: you need a job
“Look, Rich,” Ben Hanscom starts as they exit their shared physics course, sidestepping a few other college students who were being slow. He calls back a genuine sorry after accidentally shoving one of them before turning back to his friend, the curly haired boy just barely passing him in height. “You need a job. You’re nearly twenty! Bev says they need help over there, like, so bad. They had to fire someone, and two others quit and they’re leaving in a week.”
Richie Tozier looks at Ben incredulously. The dark haired college student knew full and well of Beverly Marsh; the short little redhead is one of his best friends and Ben’s fiancée. Richie likes to give himself credit for their relationship, because according to him, he set them up back in freshman year of high school. Six years later and they’re engaged, and Bev has a full time job after finishing college within two years, and Ben’s on his way to (hopefully) be an architect. Of course, that’s not how it went. Richie and Beverly met Ben in a crappy, run down elevator that worked from time to time at their school. Ben had been running late, the other two were ditching. They got stuck for five hours in that crappy elevator. Richie just likes to say he planned it. But, of course, that’s not what this current situation is about. (And the school banned anyone from using the elevator there on out).
“Bev works at a law office, Ben!” Richie yells, throwing his hands in the air as if to make a point. “All they do is sit at desks in front of computers.”
Ben rolls his eyes. “Like sitting at home on your phone or in front of the TV aren’t the same thing as sitting in front of a computer.”
Richie ignores the sarcasm. “I don’t need a job.”
“You quit your other one last month. We’re in college, man! It’s like, I dunno, death not having a job. You need to eat food!”
“I can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner here because I’m in a dorm, and on the weekends when I’m home the ‘rents cook. I’m fine!”
It’s silent as Ben gives Richie a look while they continue to walk down the steps of the building, mixing in with other students who are either leaving or heading to class. Thankfully for Richie, he only has physics today; the only down side is that it’s an 8am course, and it had been the only one available when he signed up for classes. He has Ben, though, so it isn’t all too terrible. And it’s his only 8am. Half of the others are hybrids – he only has to show up for the midterm and final, and turn in work online – and the others are either afternoon or night classes. He has it pretty easy this semester.
So, yes, he can easily get a job, and he has been thinking of getting one, but now both Ben and Beverly are pestering him about it and suddenly he doesn’t want to get one. Richie scratched at his jaw as he thought of his previous job – the stereotypical college job at McDonald’s. He’s worked there since junior year of high school, and it wasn’t that it was bad. It had been decent, at most. He liked the money, liked the food he got to bring home and to his friends, and liked the cute girls and guys who walked in. He just quit because it got too ‘going through the motions’. Richie knows a law office isn’t going to be much better.
If he gets a job, he wants to at least like it.
The January wind nips at them as they step outside, both guys’ faces scrunching up in various forms of oh shit it’s cold. Ben fixes the scarf around his neck to cover his nose and wraps his arms around himself. Meanwhile, Richie just hunches his shoulders, clenching his teeth together. In just a t-shirt, a thin zip-up jacket that’s not zipped up, and ripped skinny jeans, he wasn’t dressed properly for the winter months; Ben, on the other hand, who’s decked out in a scarf, a thick winter jacket, comfortable jeans and gloves, is dressed properly.
Richie can hear his parents’ voices now reprimanding him for not wearing the proper clothes, and soon enough her could hear his other best friend, Stan Uris, with them.
“Just… At least think about the job, okay?” Ben speaks as they get to the sidewalk by the road, lowering the scarf so his friend can hear him better. They both stop walking and face one another. “And wear decent winter clothes, man, you’re gonna catch another cold.”
He waved a hand dismissively. “Yeah, yeah. Whatever,” he says. “You’re starting to sound like Stan the Man, Mistah Handsome.”
The corners of Ben’s lips turn up. “You’re genuinely getting better at those voices, Rich.”
Richie feigned offense. One hand moves to his chest as if his heart were hurt. “You say that as if I haven’t always been amazin’,” he says, voicing sounding like it could be southern but neither of them were too sure.
“Well…”
A gasp. “Ben!”
They both start to laugh then but it dies down soon after. Ben unwraps his scarf and tosses it to Richie, who catches it with ease, and then starts to leave. “Gotta blast, Rich.”
Richie smiles. “Ah, yes, get home to the Missus!” He puts the scarf on. It’s not much at all, but it still helps.
“No, I got another class and then I’m taking the almost Missus lunch.”
“Tell Bev she sucks for me!”
“Why?”
“She ate my last bag of hot Cheetos when she stopped by yesterday.”
Ben laughs. “Alright, yeah. Will do!”
And just like that, Richie is alone. It honestly isn’t often he and Ben get to spend time together. Hell, even his time with his two best friends isn’t much. They all have school or work or both, and it’s just hard not spending as much time together as they used to. Which was where Wednesday night game nights came in. Weekends, they all went their separate ways to their parents. So, they did the next best thing: Wednesdays. At the thought of their game nights, Richie pulls out his phone as he hurriedly walks to his dorm and opens the group chat, sending a quick game suggestion.
+++
Music plays softly from the laptop at the foot of the bed, a generous amount of papers and a text book between Richie and it. He doesn’t particularly like studying – who does? – mostly because he’s never had to properly study before, but physics isn’t exactly on the easy side of things, and he doesn’t want to fail; his mom claims he probably doesn’t even need to study too much given as he understands math easily, and Richie thinks that’s the exact opposite of what a parent should be saying to their child who’s trying to successfully get through college. But, hey, they’re relationship isn’t on the rocks anymore – a shit load of teen angst on his part, a small drinking problem on her part, too engrossed into his job on Wentworth’s part, and being batshit annoying on his little sister’s part – so the legal adult doesn’t mind not being told to study, either.
The Tozier family is back to being good and mostly healthy, and as happy as they were when Richie had been a little kid. Only now, Tori is the one with teen angst and Richie’s doing his best to be a decent big brother by helping out with it.
A shrill ring cuts off the music and pulls him away from his thoughts, flinching at the sudden change in sound before reaching over and muting his laptop. He pauses the music and answers the call on his phone before pressing speaker. A smile forms at looking at the caller I.D.
“I was just thinking about you, T-Rex!” Richie exclaims and he goes back to copying down a problem from a work sheet the professor handed out in class.
“Oh, the amazing Richard thought about me,” she sarcastically says. “What ever will my fangirl heart do?”
“I predict that you will sob once the call is over and scream at your equally fangirly friends about how I graced your ears with my wonderful voice.”
“More like made them bleed.”
“You wound me!”
“Good!”
“First Ben, now you – my poor old heart can’t take it!”
“Then perish.”
He snorts out a laugh.
“But, hey, I’m calling for a reason, dickhead. Stop whatever you’re doing and listen to the best little sister in the world,” Tori tells him.
Richie sighs and drops the pencil dramatically. It hit the notebook with a soft thud but it’s loud enough for Tori to hear over the phone. “Why, do tell, young maiden,” he says, using a Voice.
“Mom’s sick with a bad cold.”
He blinks. “…Okay?”
“Dad’s gonna still be at work until five-.”
“Whoa, hold on, wait a damn minute!” Richie sits up and pulls his computer close to look at the time as he realizes what’s happening. More accurately, what the girl was getting at. “Victoria!” Richie had been so caught up in doing the math problems and messing with the sixteen year old demon he calls a sister to even take notice of the time until then. It’s not even time for her to be out of school – hell, it was barely 11:30. “T-Rex, how scandalous of you! Skipping school.” He pauses. “Fuck, you’re me.”
“I mean…we are related.” A beat of silence. “But I’m not skipping. I got suspended. Mom’s too sick to answer the phone, and Dad’s too busy at work. I convinced them to let me call you.”
Richie sighs. “It’s two weeks into the semester, T-Rex.” He leans an elbow on his knee and put his forehead in the palm of his hand.
Getting suspended isn’t exactly a new thing for either Tozier children. Richie got detention countless of times for various reasons, earning him a few times of suspension, and Tori just has a habit of mouthing off adults – similar to her big brother – but also has one of fighting – not so similar to her big brother.
“I don’t know what you want me to do, kid.”
“Pick me up,” she replies with a duh tone.
“My truck’s still in the shop, dingbat.”
“Well, I don’t exactly have a car, either, douchebag.”
Richie is quiet for a split second. “Okay. Look. I’ll try to get one of my friends to drive me over there. Stay in the office, and just walk home if I’m not there by twelve-thirty.”
Tori grumbles. “Fine.”
Richie makes a face at her sour attitude, about to say something – “Ah, teen angst, what a marvelous thing it is” – when she hangs up before he can ever utter another word. He gasped at the device and sent her a bunch of middle finger emojis before dialing his three friends one by one. Ben didn’t answer. It stopped ringing halfway through the third ring and not a minute later, Ben’s text of “still in class” lit up his phone once again. He then calls Beverly, who he knows won’t answer but did it anyway for the sake of annoying her. To his surprise, she answers; only to greet him with a short, “No,” before hanging up on him.
“Stanny Boy, you better pick up,” Richie mutters as he crawled off of the dorm bed, finding his shoes.
“This better be good, Trashmouth,” is Stan’s form of greeting not even two seconds later.
Richie grins, pleased at least one of his friends is letting him explain. “Not good in the long run but it’s for a good enough reason, Bird Brain,” he says. “Where are you?”
“…What did you do?”
He rolls his eyes. “Not me. Our ferocious T-Rex.”
“She’s your sister.”
“She’s adopted you as her ‘better big brother’. This is what you get for befriending me when we were four and she was one, and staying best friends with me our entire lives. If you need to feel better, know that I did call Mister and Missus first because I know you enjoy your lazy Mondays.”
Stan hums. “It doesn’t.” Then Richie hears shuffling on the other end, and his hopes rise high. “But I’m on my way to pick you up. You can explain everything then.”
“You’re the best, Stanley, might as well marry you right now! Let’s go elope – take a road trip to Vegas!”
“I’ll castrate you.”
“Kinky.”
“Oh, my god.”
“See ya when you get her, my love.”
“Yuck, don’t ever call me that again. Bye.”
+++
A year and a half later, Richie never once thought he would be entering his old high school ever again – excluding the reunions he knows Beverly will drag them all to, none of the boys exactly having a choice in the matter – let alone the office of said school. Yet here he stands, all of the memories flooding back to him; both good and bad ones. He wasn’t exactly popular in school. More of the annoying class clown everyone hates but secretly finds funny. At least, at first. Everything eventually changed in sophomore year.
Richie makes a face and turns to Stan. No one was at the front desk, so they were being forced to wait to collect the youngest Tozier from the principal’s office.
“I should’ve let her rot here.”
Stan rolls his eyes. “You’re too good of a brother for that,” he says. “The principal hated you and she’s most likely getting secondhand hate from the douchebag himself.”
Richie’s eyes widen behind his glasses at the realization. He hadn’t exactly left the high school on good terms with anyone, minus his three good friends and the math teacher for the freshman, and maybe the woman who usually sits at the desk in the front office. “Fuck,” he whispers. Then louder, “What if she’s getting bullied?”
Stan gives a look that said he was crazy. “She just got suspended for fighting. I’m sure she can take care of herself, man.” He pauses, worries his bottom lip, and sighs. “But now I’m worrying about that too. So, thanks for that.”
Only a few seconds of silence goes by before Richie speaks again. “You think people still talk?”
“Nah. Everyone who was here then has graduated. Unless, one or two got held back.”
“The teachers are gossip royalty here.”
“I doubt they gossip about former students to current students, especially when one of them is your baby sister.”
“Our baby sister.”
“Just because I helped you babysit all throughout middle school doesn’t mean I’m her brother, too. We’ve been over this!”
“Try telling her that; the kid adores you! Always has.”
“Which is weird. Besides, back to the point, it's twenty-nineteen now. People who shit on someone for liking the same gender should just become extinct cavemen.” The words cause Richie to let out a laugh.
“Well, look who it is,” the lady who sits at the front desk finally appeared. Both young adults smile at seeing her, genuinely pleased. Miss Mims was one of the few adults at the school Richie and his friends liked; Hell, they still like her. In a year and a half, the woman hadn’t changed much. Long dirty blonde hair had been cut to her shoulder, and her dark eyes seem happier. Her usual blouse and nice pants are the same, and she’s still just under five feet. “Uris and Tozier, what a pleasant surprise.” Miss Mims smiles at them.
“Hi, Sara!”
“Hey, Miss Mims.”
She chuckles and holds up her left hand. “It’s Mrs. Delaney now, kids.”
Stan grins and leans forward to check out the rings on her finger. “Congratulations! When did it happen?”
Richie leans forward too, and nearly knocks Stan over, mouth in a big toothy grin. “Give us the deets, Sara! Who’s the lucky fella? Or gal, y’know. Bet they’re good in bed, huh, Staniel?”
“Rich,” Stan warns, almost in a reminding tone.
He blinked. Then, “Oh! Right, forget those questions Sar- Uh, Mrs. Delaney! My kid sister is stuck in the principal’s office, I’m sure you’ve heard why. Suspension. Fighting. The shticks.”
Mrs. Delaney snorts. “You Toziers are something else. But yeah, I’ll go get her. Where are you parents?”
“Sick and working. I’ve got the rest of the day free, so I volunteered myself to do the dirty so Went wouldn’t have to leave.” He purposefully didn’t say anything about not telling their parents, or even planning on it. At least, he knows Tori isn’t going to tell. And he’s not going to throw her under the bus no matter how funny it’ll be.
Stan rolls his eyes. “His truck isn’t working so I got dragged along.”
“You love me, Staniel.”
“Debatable.”
“I’ll go get her. Shouldn’t be long at all.”
And it isn't.
Within five minutes, the baby of the family is stepping out while Mrs. Delaney goes to her chair behind her desk, marking the girl as being picked up by a family member. The sight of Victoria, to put it simply, surprises both college students greatly. There's a cut on her bottom lip, and the intricate fishtail braid she had done that morning after straightening her usually wild curls is gone. All her knuckles are scabbed over and bruised, and there's a tear at the knee of her jeans, showing a pale bandaid instead of her pale skin. Richie quickly stuffs his hands into his jacket pockets as his brows lower in concern but mostly anger, lips pulling into a thin line. She's gotten in fights before but never has she gotten so beat up. Stan, still beside Richie, is barely hiding his shock. The stares from the two quickly make Tori uncomfortable and she shifts on her feet, tennis shoes squeaking against the polished tile. It's clear she's in a worse mood Richie originally thought. He just believed she punched someone, yelled a few choice words, and then got sent to the office. Rather, it had been a full fledged fight with two fists and blood, and he can tell Tori isn't happy. Not even angry right now. Just...sad, almost.
"You should see the other guy," she tries to joke, but it falls flat quickly.
"It was a boy?!" Richie shrieks, finally blowing his top. He can handle, for the time being, his sister fighting another girl; he can't handle a boy hitting her physically. He turns to Mrs. Delaney accusingly, the newly married woman jumping at the sudden movement. "You let a boy hit my baby sister?"
"Rich, whoa, calm down," Stan quickly moves and sends an apologetic look to the woman. "It's not her fault, man."
Tori messes with the ends of her brown hair. "I... I'll explain later. Can we just please leave?"
He shakes his best friend off of him, and Richie huffs. "Fine, okay. Whatever." He pauses. "Uh, sorry, Mrs. Delaney."
The woman just gave a smile that tells them that she forgave the outburts. Then, the three of them walk out of the school and to Stanley's car. The ride is silent almost the entire time. Stan got a phone call from his boss at a café he works at, which shifts their ending destination to Stan's work place rather than the university seeing as he needs to get to work pronto, and a spare uniform is in his trunk. Twenty minutes later, the Uris is ushering the Toziers out of his car. Richie doesn't make a move to talk about the fight. Tori doesn't make a move to explain. It's clear she doesn't want to, not yet, and even though Richie desperately wants to know what happened, he can't just force it out of her. She shuts down completely; he's learned that the hard way.
"Hey," Stan speaks up as he gets the uniform out of the trunk. "Sorry I can't take you the rest of the way."
Richie shrugs, looking around. His eyes then land on a familiar beige and dark brown building, and in the front parking lot he takes notice of a familiar black car. He checks the time on his phone, and then starts off, telling his little sister to stay by Stan's car, ignoring their calls of questions as he races across the busy street. He nearly get hit a few times and flips off anyone who honks at him, but he eventually made it to the other side. He jogs to the building and walks in, smiling widely at the receptionist up front.
"Hey, has a blond guy about my height come in by any chance?" He asks the woman who can't be much older than thirty, leaning on the counter, slightly out of breath.
She looks at him as she hangs up a call she just ended. "Yeah." Her brows pull together. "He went back that way, why?"
He doesn't answer. Instead, he spins on his heel and goes in the direction the lady pointed in. It's not long at all until he hears the familiar laughter of Ben mixed with Beverly's. "My, if it isn't two my favorite people in the whole world!" Richie exclaims as he enters the office.
Ben yelps in surprise but quickly relaxes. "Jesus, Richie..."
Beverly grins and lunges at Richie, pulling him into a tight hug. "Hi! Have you made up your mind already?" She pulls back a split second later to look at him, hopeful.
"Uh." Richie holds up a finger. "No."
"Rich-."
"I need Mr. Handsome here to drive me and Tori back to the university," he interrupts her, and clasps a hand on Ben's shoulder. "And then I need to borrow his car to take her home so our parents don't find out she got suspended."
"She what?!" The two shout in unison. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that they were heard throughout the building.
"Long story," he mumbled, trying not to show how upset he was.
Beverly's blue eyes narrow the slightest bit. She knows something's up; she always does, somehow. Like a sixth-sense for when her friends are upset. Maybe it's because she's a year older than them all. "Ben's not driving you unless you agree to work here," Beverly says quickly. "Period."
"Oh, c'mon, Bev-," Richie tries. He looks to Ben for help, but the guy looks away as if he's admiring the awful pale green color on the wall.
The twenty year old shook her head, strands of red hair falling in her. She brushes them away with ease. "No. You need a job, Rich, you know that. And Maggie and Went would be agreeing with us." She motions between herself and Ben.
Richie makes a face.
"The pay's good," Beverly says quietly after a few seconds.
The look goes away. "...How good?" Not a minute later, Beverly grabs a check she has yet to put in her account and handed it to him. Brown eyes widen from behind the frames of his glasses. He let out a low whistle. "Damn..."
"They're lawyers, Richie, it's not exactly gonna be a bad pay. It's not McDonald's. And you'll most likely work part time, meaning you'll get to pick your hours. They're lenient. Just show up, do your job, respect them and everyone else, and they'll be happy."
Richie stares, thinking it over, and hands the check back to Beverly. She takes it quickly and puts it back in her purse, both her and Ben waiting for Richie's answer. He crosses his arms and looks between his two friends. Good pay. Lenient. Pick your own hours. A sigh leaves his lips and he lets his head fall backwards. He does need a job. He can't live on ramen forever, and he certainly can't live off of the box of Cosmic Brownies hidden in his closet away from his dorm mate. "Alright," he finally says, sounding defeated.
Beverly grins like a madman and squeals. "Perfect! Kim!" She dashes out of the office and grabs Richie to make him tag along. They pass by the lobby in a flash, and Richie barely has time to smile at the receptionist cheekily. They continue down the hall, passing cubicles that are mostly empty and a few offices that have people in them, and don't stop until the very end. She's then dragging him into a slightly bigger, nice office with shelves for books and a bigger desk with two chairs. A woman in her forties at at the desk, typing on her phone. She has brown hair that went to her shoulders and blue eyes peer up at them both as they stand behind the chairs. She looks nice, Richie has to admit, but there was also something about her that demanded respect and oozed authority. "Kim, this is Richie Tozier, my friend I told you about."
Richie smiles, and decides to be a decent human. "Hi, it's nice to meet you," he says, sticking a hand out for her to shake. If he could stay the way he is with his friends, he most definitely would. But Kim actually scares him a bit, and he doesn't want to get on her bad side just yet.
Kim smiles back and shakes his hand after standing. "You too, Richie. Beverly's told us a lot about you," she tells him, chuckling. "I guess she's told you about how we're low on employees?"
He chuckles. "Yea- yes, ma'am."
"He's decided to work here, as long as you and Thomas and Peter are okay with it," Beverly explains.
She scoffs and then lets out a loud laugh. "Of course we're fine with it! Work has been piling up for everyone already, and its only going to get worse when those two officially leave. We need all the hands we can get."
"I'd have to work part time," Richie tells the woman. "I'm in college."
"Completely okay," Kim says pairing her words with a smile.
"And I don't have my truck right now, its in the shop, so I don't know when I can start."
"Oh! Tomorrow! We can carpool, it'll be your sophomore year all over again - minus, y'know, the thing," Beverly says. Her hand waves in the air and she half rolls her eyes, and Richie snorts. The thing... It certainly was a 'thing', alright.
"Bev-."
"Fine, I'll make Ben drive you."
"Dude, he has barely any free time, don't do that to him... Okay, we can carpool until I get my truck back."
"Yes!"
Kim chuckles at the two, softly shaking her head. She looks at Richie then. "Welcome aboard, Richie. Come in when you can tomorrow, and then we'll figure out set hours. Sounds good?"
Richie nods. "Yes, ma'am. I'll probably be here around ten."
"Perfect."
Finally, after that and after stealing Bev's hot Cheetos Ben had brought her - he wasn't a total ass, he left the sandwich and drink - he left with Ben, the blond taking him over to where Stan works; where Tori is still patiently waiting. The girl climbs in without a second thought and thankfully Ben doesn't mention her disheveled appearance. As they leave, they wave bye to Stan. Well, they wave by to the café and grill, hoping in some weird way Stan might be able to see them.

——————————————————————————————
It was a beautiful day for pee-wee soccer. The sun was shining, but not hot enough to risk any dehydration. There was hardly a cloud in the sky, and the ones that remained were all white and fluffy. The stands at the local athletic club field were filled with proud parents and a couple random, curious spectators. In the middle of the stands, cheering on their young daughter, were Ruby and Weiss. Yang, who was sitting right above the married couple, was cheering with them for her favorite niece. As for Blake, she had a prior commitment of not being there.
"Come on, Autumn!" Ruby clapped as their daughter kicked the ball down the field and hustled after it. She was one of a handful on the field who were actually trying to play the game. Some were doing the bare minimum that would keep them on the field, and several others were standing around completely lost. That was just how sports went when the kids were that young, and Ruby understood that. She'd been that young too, and she'd learned to encourage those kids who didn't really know what they were doing.
Weiss, on the other hand, had a slightly different take on the situation. Despite having never played a sport in her life, she was the one who trained their daughter the most for soccer. She'd spent a lot of time online learning the ins and outs of the game, all very important technical information that a seven year old finds eminently fascinating. In her mind, having a child who looked lost on the field was unacceptable, and she had to make sure that little Autumn was the best player on the field at all times. Ruby had tried to get her to ease off, but she might as well have told Blake to stop being moody.
At least she'd gotten Weiss to come to the games at all. She'd never shown any interest in athletics before, and she'd worried that Autumn wouldn't have both of her moms cheering her on at her games should she choose to start playing sports. Well, she did, but to Ruby's surprise, it hadn't been hard at all to get Weiss to go. She'd insisted on going, which had been great! At first. Now, she'd started to wonder if there was a way to keep Weiss away from the games. She was on her best behavior at the moment, but the game had only begun recently. It was only a matter of time...
"Ugh, come on! Ref!" Well, there she went. Ruby sighed and sunk low on the bench as Weiss jumped to her feet in anger. One of the opposing players had run into Autumn, but the referee hadn't blown his whistle. From a distance, Ruby could tell the poor guy was college-age and likely just wetting his feet in the profession. It was more for the experience than the money. And boy, was he about to get an experience... "Where's the whistle, ref?!"
To his credit, he didn't seem to have any reaction to Weiss's yelling. Maybe it made him more nervous, but it didn't necessarily show. He wouldn't have been the first referee to have a reaction to her wife's shrill screech. She just hoped - pleaded, really - that there wouldn't be any more mistakes involving her daughter, so there wouldn't be any more opportunities for the other parents to stare and judge them.
That was but a pipe dream. Another missed call had Weiss up and screaming again, but it wasn't only concerning the ref's incompetency. She was shouting about how the other team was engaging in crooked play. The dirty, 'anything to win' shenanigans of elementary schoolers. Ruby looked back at Yang, her eyes wide and desperate for help. Her sister was sitting there with her phone out, gleefully recording Weiss's latest 'angry soccer parent' outburst. She looked around at all the eyes on them, especially two pairs of narrowed stares that more than likely came from the parents of the child Weiss was accusing of foul play. Ruby laughed nervously before groaning and withdrawing as far into herself as she could. If she scooted far enough away, maybe nobody would know that they were there together.
Things were mostly calm through the rest of the game, which was as much of a relief as Ruby could get. As much as she wanted to enjoy the game, she had her concentration torn between watching their daughter and whispering to Weiss to try and keep her from embarrassing them in front of all the other parents. Sometimes she could be more childish than their literal seven year old. Not that she'd ever admit to that, of course. To her, vigorously berating the referee was just her way of keeping things honest. Honestly anxiety-inducing.
After the game was over, which ended up as a victory for Autumn's team, Ruby headed down to the field to congratulate her daughter. She hugged her tightly and told her what a good job she'd done. "That was a very good goal you made, sweetie!" She made sure Autumn drank some of her water, then looked up to find her wife. Usually Weiss was right down with her telling their daughter how good she'd done, as any proud parent would. She'd thought the victory would quell her anger, but by the way she was cornering the referee, it would appear that wasn't the case. "Oh dear... Please stay here, sweetie. Mommy will be right back."
"I cannot believe they allow you to referee games of this importance! Do you even have a license to do this? Let me see your refereeing license this instant!" Away from the game and the other parents, Weiss was dressing down the poor ref in no uncertain terms. By the time Ruby got over there, he looked positively terrified of this soccer mom who barely came up to his chin in heels. Ruby didn't blame him: most people's fight or flight mechanics were activated whenever Hurricane Schnee barreled down upon them.
"M-Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to step away, or I'll..." He stammered out what sounded like a threat, but it came across as more of a 'please spare my life' kind of deal. That was a clear sign of weakness, and the great Weiss shark could smell it in the water. She was going to pounce and destroy another referee if Ruby didn't intervene. This was not what she'd expected when she'd promised to stick by Weiss 'for better or worse'.
"Weiss, honey, light of my life..." She slipped behind Weiss and started massaging her shoulders, trying her damnedest to calm her down. From past experiences, she knew it only did so much, but it was the best she could think of outside of knocking her unconscious with a bat and dragging her home. "Our daughter wants to celebrate her team's victory, and she would really appreciate hearing about how good she did from you." Hopefully that would work...
"Alright then." Without missing a beat, Weiss turned around and headed for the bench, leaving both Ruby and the referee in shock. No matter how many times it worked, it was still surprising that just mentioning their kid could make Weiss's emotions change on a dime. Ruby wiped her brow with a sigh of relief, but her troubles weren't over yet. There was still damage control to be done.
"Hey man, uh... I'm sorry about my wife. She gets really... passionate, about soccer. I'm sure she didn't mean anything bad she said to you."
"Like how I got my refereeing degree at clown college?"
"Uhh, yeahhh..." Oh Weiss... "She really didn't mean it and I would really, really appreciate it if you didn't tell the club owners and get my wife banned from the grounds. Our daughter would be crushed if she couldn't come to see her games." She hated to pull out the kid card, but it was the best card she had in her hand to play. Weiss always left her in a tough spot when it came to keeping these venues from having signs put up saying 'Do not let this woman in'. With the way the referee was looking over at Weiss, who was now speaking with their daughter, she felt like it might be working.
"Alright, I won't say anything, but please keep her from yelling at me again. There's only so much I can take." His eyes darted over to Weiss again, a flicker of fear in them. Ruby sighed but smiled through it, thanking him before heading for her family. She wanted to take Weiss to the side and try again to convince her to mellow out, but she stopped when she heard her and their daughter talking.
"I'm proud of you, Autumn. You did so well today!" Weiss hugged Autumn, the love shining in her eyes having completely overtaken any anger she may have had previously. "You wiped the floor with the other team!"
"I did!" Autumn giggled and hugged Weiss back, melting Ruby's heart. How could she have a stern conversation with Weiss now after seeing those two being so loving and adorable together? Maybe she was doing it on purpose to get out of what was certainly to come, but darnit, it was working. "Can we have lunch, mom? I'm hungry!"
"Absolutely. Let's go find your mother and-" She turned and found Ruby staring at them, startling her. "Oh! Well, there she is." Holding Autumn's hand, she walked over to Ruby and smiled at her. "Our daughter would like to have lunch. Are you ready to go?" She looked at Weiss, then down to their equally-happy daughter, and she just couldn't bear to rain on their parade. Even if Weiss's parade was fueled by competitive anger and could use a rainout or two.
"Yes. Yes I am." She smiled and took Autumn's other hand, the three of them heading to the parking lot. The talk about Weiss's behavior could come later. For now, she was going to spend the rest of the day enjoying the good life with her two favorite people in the world. There was honestly nothing better than that.

32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. - I remember being at a sleepover a few days before I moved (this was in South Korea) and I woke up at 3:34 am (yes I remember the time don't ask why) because one of my friends was playing Megalovania on the keyboard. Then she turned around and asked who the hell took her pretzels. They were under her pillow.

38: tell us about your pet peeves! - When I tell remind someone of the rules and they say "okay" and continue breaking them. Like we aren't supposed to put pans in the dishwasher because it ruins the pans. Yet my brother always puts them in there. I remind him and take it out, and he says "okay" and puts it back. I also hate it when I ask someone to stop doing something (usually when it's making me nervous or upset) and they ask "WhY?" in a really annoying tone and keep doing it. I ALSO hate it when I'm in charge and yet no one listens to me.
I also don't like it when no one says thank you. It makes it seem like they don't appreciate me.
39: what color do you wear the most? - Grey. I want to wear colorful clothes but the last time we went clothes shopping and I asked for pastel colors, I walked out of the store with grey, light grey, brown, and dark blue clothes.

41: what’s the last book you remember really, really loving? - There's a book series that I don't remember the name of but it's about a girl who is forcibly turned into a siren by three other sirens. She has to eat human hearts to live. It's kinda gorey, kinda romantic, lots of action. I love it.
42: do you have a favorite coffee shop? describe it! - Unfortunately no, I usually get coffee at a gas station ^^'
43: who was the last person you gazed at the stars with? - My dog Freyja! Whenever I take out trash, she comes with, and when the sky is clear I like to point out the starts with her before we go back inside. She's very sweet. But I can't stargaze for more than a minute.
44: when was the last time you remember feeling completely serene and at peace with everything? - Last year I went on a trip to Florida to stay with my grandparents for a week. I remember waking up one morning with a beautiful view of the ocean and the sound of waves crashing onto the shore. My grandparents have an apartment of sorts that faces the Atlantic and you can literally go down the stairs and go swim in the ocean if you want to, it's like a two minute walk, not even. I love the ocean and the sound of waves and seagulls is always calming to me. But my house is very loud and there's no peace here.
45: do you trust your instincts a lot? - Yes. When I have a bad feeling about something, I address it. It's not always true, but I don't want to risk anything.

50: what’s an odd thing you collect? - Fabric. I have so much and I don't even use it. But when I see a nice fabric, I get it (if I have money).
51: think of a person. what song do you associate with them? - 'Old Timer Rock and Roll' (probably not the name of it) always reminds me of my dad. One day we were driving in his Jeep, just us two, and I mentioned that I wasn't a fan of the music on the radio. We ended up compromising and that song was the first one on the radio station that we switched to.
52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far? - I am unfortunately not up to date with the memes. Although the ones where it's like "you've mc-ed your last Donald" or "you've ratted your last tatouille" always make me exhale aggressively.
53: have you ever watched the rocky horror picture show? heathers? beetlejuice? pulp fiction? what do you think of them? - None of the above! I've been wanting to watch Heather's though. I just never get around to doing it.
54: who’s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? - My brother. Not the same one from before.
55: what’s the most dramatic thing you’ve ever done to prove a point? - nothing, sorry. I'm not very dramatic.
56: what are some things you find endearing in people? - when they pour their heart out about a certain subject that they love. I know a lot of people tend to bottle up their opinions but when someone trusts me aniugh to tell me all about it, it's just sorta nice.
57: go listen to bohemian rhapsody. how did it make you feel? did you dramatically reenact the lyrics? - I just sorta spaced out for the first have then did a little dance for the rest of it. I love the line "I see a little silhouetto of a man" and it's more upbeat and the music just makes me dance a little
58: who’s the wine mom and who’s the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why? - bold of you to assume I have a group of friends
59: what’s your favorite myth? - There's this one I heard as a kid that involves a faceless girl on the side of a highway who tries to steal faces.
60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves? - I can't think of any off the top of my head, but poetry is nice!
61: what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever given? the stupidest one you’ve ever received? - I don't really remember. I try to only give gifts that are meaningful.
62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind? - nope! I usually drink milk!
63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? - I usually leave my music to its own devices, but all the books are organized by series and genre.
64: what color is the sky where you are right now? - Blue! Just any other afternoon sky.
65: is there anyone you haven’t seen in a long time who you’d love to hang out with? - My older brother. We don't get to talk much.
66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? - Colorful, with a few white flowers!
67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? - Those are usually the days that I don't feel anything.
68: what’s winter like where you live? - The weather is all over the place. A little snow, then the next day, it's like 60°F. Not even joking. It snowed Friday and Saturday was warm.
69: what are your favorite board games? - Monopoly and Battleship!
70: have you ever used a ouija board? - No, but I really want to. But my dad won't let me.
71: what’s your favorite kind of tea? - I don't really drink tea, sorry!
72: are you a person who needs to note everything down or else you’ll forget it? - Nope. I'll forget it anyway. I usually set alarms for certain things but then I don't do it.
73: what are some of your worst habits? - Biting the inside of my cheek and scratching/pinching my arm when I'm nervous.
74: describe a good friend of yours without using their name or gendered pronouns. - kind, a good listener, talented, and understanding
75: tell us about your pets! - We have four dogs. There's Emrys (the dog I've posted pictures of before), Cirilla (a husky German Shepard mix, very sweet), Cayde-6 (a Rottweiler mix I think, super energetic, loud, and steals food off the counter even when someone is watching), and Freyja (a German Shepard mix, puppy, also very sweet! She knows the phrase 'give hugs' and she always comes with me to take out the trash for whatever reason). I also have a Guinea Pig (who I want to get a friend for because she's lonely, but my parents keep saying no) names Neo.
76: is there anything you should be doing right now but aren’t? - Working on my Someconsious series, cleaning, and probably checking in with some friends.
77: pink or yellow lemonade? - Pink
78: are you in the minion hateclub or Fan club? - Hate club. I don't like them. They're just annoying and bright and their language is stupid to me.
79: what’s one of the cutest things someone has ever done for you? - One of my exes surprised me with a cars and roses out of nowhere. It wasn't Valentines Day, it wasn't my birthday, he just went out of his way to do something nice for me when I was having a rough week.
80: what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why? - They're a sort of off white. I want to paint them light lavender or pale blue but my parents have only painted the living room and refuse to paint anywhere else for whatever reason. I know we can afford paint, I know we have time. They just stopped caring.
81: describe one of your friend’s eyes using the most abstract imagery you can think of. - Not sure what it means by abstract, but I'll try. Her eyes are similar to the bottom of a small river. The brown in the middle with green rings on the edges remind me of a river I used to go fishing in back in Oklahoma.
82: are/were you good in school? - I'm okay. I have all A's and B's, but I have easy subjects that aren't very hard.
83: what’s some of your favorite album art? - I don't really listen to albums, my music taste is mostly individual songs. Even then I don't really pay attention to the art.
84: are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones? - I want to get a quote of sort on my ankle. Something in another language so I can tell them it means something mysterious and deep when in reality it's the description of a toaster oven that hasn't been cleaned since 1995.
85: do you read comics? what are your faves? - I read a few webcomics if that counts! I like Castle Swimmer a lot! Gay fish bapeys are best fish bapeys.
86: do you like concept albums? which ones? - I don't know what those are, sorry
87: what are some movies you think everyone should watch at least once in their lives? - The Princess Bride and the Last Unicorn. But I'm biased because they're both a part of my childhood.
88: are there any artistic movements you particularly enjoy? - not in particular!
89: are you close to your parents? - I'm only close with my dad. My stepmom can go fuck herself. She just told us that's she'll be making a schedule for the next two weeks because there won't be school. One of the weeks was spring break anyway! We aren't missing much!
90: talk about your one of you favorite cities. - I like Palm Beach in Florida! It's fairly quiet, right next to the ocean, and filled with retired people who are all really nice.
91: where do you plan on traveling this year? - Nowhere, we don't travel much. I really want to go to Florida again though.
92: are you a person who drowns their pasta in cheese or a person who barely sprinkles a pinch? - I don't add cheese at all! It sort of ruins the texture for me. Especially the grated sprinkle cheese stuff l. I hate now it feels.
93: what’s the hairstyle you wear the most? - I just keep my hair down. I don't like it in any other way.
94: who was the last person you know to have a birthday? - My brother. His birthday is today!
95: what are your plans for this weekend? - cry a lot cry some more lose feelings for a few hours draw watch YouTube art videos then try not to yell at my mom like I did last week
96: do you install your computer updates really quickly or do you procrastinate on them a lot? - I just get it over with so I can do whatever needs to be done. Or I schedule it for when I'm not going to be using it.
97: myer briggs type, zodiac sign, and hogwarts house? - INFP-T/Mediator, Scorpio, and Hufflepuff
98: when’s the last time you went hiking? did you enjoy it?- A few weeks ago. And no, I did not enjoy it considering I was supposed to be working on an important project that day.
99: list some songs that resonate to your soul whenever you hear them. - Where We Started, If You're Going Through Hell, and We Like to Numb (a mix of We Like to Party and Numb)
100: if you were presented with two buttons, one that allows you to go 5 years into the past, the other 5 years into the future, which one would you press? why? - Future. In five years I plan on being in college and I want to see what I should be prepared for and if my interests have changed.
This took me at least an hour and a half. Thank you though! I

Please ignore me if I'm off base, but if I'm reading this right, your mom came into your room in the middle of the night to ban you from doing something that makes you happy because you were fighting through a depressive episode? They cut you off from part of your treatment because you were showing symptoms that they exacerbated in the first place? Because if that's the case, then I am so, so sorry. You seem like a nice person, and you deserve to be able to do what makes you happy.
Hey, nonnie.
You’re not entirely off-base, and it’s partially because I’m bad at articulating what I want to say because I overthink what I write and say a lot. It’s comforting to know that everyone is being supportive about this, so thank you so much for your kind words. It means a lot to me and I feel better knowing such kind-hearted people care
I’m going to go into more detail about what happened to clear things up, and if reading stuff like this distresses you, please don’t continue. It doesn’t help that I don’t talk about this much, so this is long (5-6 paragraphs) because I’m pretty much unloading, and it’s probably not pleasant to read.
TL;DR - My mother burst into my room a couple of weeks ago, not yesterday morning. That’s my mistake because I’m not always the best writer and didn’t make that clear yesterday. And while I never thought about my art being like a treatment, you’re right.
When I said that my mother came into my room at two in the morning, I meant to say that she had done that a couple of weeks ago, when she found out my room was a mess. She does this a lot when she gets into a fight with my dad: she’ll fight with him and then come up the stairs to see if my room is up to her standards. Since it never is, she comes in and throws some things around, yells at me and threatens to throw everything I own away, then leaves so that I can spend the rest of the early hours cleaning up.
I knew what was going to happen the moment she started up the stairs because since she’s done this a few times already, the moment someone sets foot on our creaky staircase I go on high alert. Even if I’m in a deep sleep, because I don’t want to be woken up to someone screaming in my face again. So I resigned myself to what was happening. Sure enough, she did what she normally does and then left with an ‘I’m going to take your tablet away after you finish your commissions’. I didn’t necessarily take her seriously, because she’s made threats like that before and never followed through. I also paid for that tablet with money that I made through commissions, and even though she likes to say that doesn’t matter and that nothing in this house is actually mine, I sometimes like to think that my mother respects the fact that I earned that tablet on my own.
Anyway, right before I made that post yesterday she asked me about the final commission I have left to finish. I said I had started but hadn’t finished it. So she got aggressive with me and said that I shouldn’t be drawing anything else because, and I quote, “You’re banned from drawing anything else.” Ignoring the fact that, earlier, I told her I was writing and doing homework all day. The fact that she’s brought this up again tells me she’s being serious, so after this next commission (and hopefully a zine piece that I’ve already committed to, if not, I have to tell them I have to remove myself from the project), I have to relinquish my tablet to her and stop drawing entirely. Which… makes me nervous about my concept art class, since we’re starting the digital part soon. I’m still going to try and keep my tablet, but who knows.
To be fair to my parents, I never let them know when I’m not doing great. It’s partly because they belittle me and partly because I don’t always like to admit I’m having trouble. What they do know, however, is that my art, my writing, and my social media helps me a lot when I get like this. I get to separate myself from the real world for a bit and have a little bit more control over my life.
It hasn’t stopped them from taking those things away on occasion, however (like that one time they forced me to delete my old Tumblr and Instagram and took my phone because I made an online friend and then screamed at me in a crowded airport about it, threatening to leave me behind in another country because of that. Or when my mom made me throw my art out into our outdoor trash bin which is filthy and wet most of the time, and thus ruined it all and made them irretrievable when she said I could have them back days later). Now that I think about it, it’s been traumatising every single time. So, you’re right, my art is, in a way, my treatment. And it sucks that it’s getting taken away again.
But all I can do right now is try to fight it, and if I can’t, then just grin and bear it for the time being. But you guys have already been such a great help, and every message I’ve received has been tremendous. Support and understanding is all I can ask for right now, and I’ve already gotten more than I was expecting. So thank you so much.

digital dreams pt. 1 - new old friends
find me at meowcosmos on neopets and millimallow on twitter + letterboxd
neopets is a virtual pet website that debuted during the (very) late 90s. it was conceived of as a website that would allow college students and young adults to keep and take care of pets that they were not allowed to keep in real life thanks to apartment and education policies. as the nature of all things is to grow and change, neopets quickly became an extremely formative piece of 2000s web-culture, ending up with a large userbase of young children and teenagers which prompted the website to take a new direction into youth entertainment. the origin of the name is “neo”, which means new in latin, and “pets” which means pets (and maybe something in latin? i didn’t go to a posh enough school to find out)
neopets had a huge influence on me during my youth. like any other 8 year old whose prospects could be termed “ambiguous but unpromising” and who owned an old-school chunky body computer, the internet became the recipient of a gracious amount of my free time.
will you still love me when i’m no longer young and beautiful? (credit to the computer history museum)
during that time, all roads led to neopets. specifically if “road” means “the nickelodeon website on your public library’s kids computer which didn’t even have tabs”. i founded accounts before the one i remember most, but the one i really stuck with was made in 2008. it has an incredibly embarrassing name that i thankfully haven’t stuck with online because it makes me look like a scene kid, but not like, one that’s trying very hard.
i can’t tell you with any sincerity that i was good at neopets, because i wasn’t and i’m not much better now. the very core function of neopets is playing flash games to get money to take care of your neopets (though in a fairly unsettling sense, nothing bad ever happens to you if you treat your neopets like shit..). neopets want constant food and attention in much the same fashion as cats do, but less often. you can paint them a variety of different colours and dress them up in a variety of outfits, two processes which are great bounties of humiliation for the weird bug thing you have that won’t stop sassing you (seriously, neopets say some weird shit at random even when they’re jumping for joy).
“violence is the answer, and also fun”- neopets paintbrushes are STUPID expensive and at the same time the coolest thing in the game, making them equivalent to a nintendo switch or paying whatever amount of money you’d need for john cena to let you kick him in the nuts on national tv. and this in the present tense because unlike other whirring engines of a time gone by (club penguin, anyone?) neopets is still up.
yay, i can still spend a couple million virtual dollars trying to own...this!
modern-day neopets is an interesting place. you can spend your real life money on it still. you can sign up for a new account on it still, you can name your new pet ligma420 and experiment for me on how long it takes for the moderators to disintegrate him with a profanity ban (not done, but if you do PLEASE let me know) and- though there are some incredibly irritating restrictions on new accounts- you can play neopets. in the past three days on my new account (i’m trying to access the old one- more on that later) i have about 50,000np (stands for nutspoints) in my bank and two pets.
celestinael was created by myself and lmkanlast (pronounced lumkanlast…i guess?) was adopted from the abandoned pets section. things are a little rough right now for this neofamily- celestinael looks like a deviantart sonic x tails fankid and is worryingly nude (cool hat counts for something?) and lmkanlast has what looks like silver poisoning, but we’re making it through. i’m not quite sure what my next goal is- when i was a kid, i really wanted to get access to the secret lab and help rehome pets with bad names (for the record, neopets requires every pet to have a unique name down to the letter combination, which leads to everyone naming their pets like middle class white mom or a disaster of a scene kid) which requires acquiring all of the map pieces necessary. this is no small task, as the secret map pieces cost what could be termed “a fuckton of money”. maybe i can just ask someone for them really nicely...
i’m not kidding about this little bastard being a couple million Game Dollars, by the way
until next time, thank you for reading! this is going to be an ongoing series about reliving my childhood memories in the modern era, focusing on neopets, so keep an eye out for future installments!

IT MIGHT BE TRUE THAT INCREASED VARIATION IN INCOME, WHETHER BY STEALING PRIVATE FORTUNES, AS FEUDAL RULERS USED TO DO, AND THE PAPER BECOMES A PROXY FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT REPRESENTED BY THE SOFTWARE
The novels and etiquette manuals of that period read now like descriptions of some strange tribal society. When there is some real external test of skill, it isn't painful to be at the bottom like a pear. You're also surrounded by other people trying to do it as a sign of maturity.1 Perhaps what practice does is train your unconscious mind to handle tasks that used to require conscious thought.2 Ditto in engineering. A few days ago I suddenly realized Microsoft was dead.3 As in any job, as you suspect, the college admissions process is largely a charade. Suppose you're a college freshman deciding whether to major in math it will be like, but it only caught 92% of spam, with 1.4
Partly because I'm a writer, and writers always get disproportionate attention. Like prison wardens, the teachers mostly left us to ourselves. It has an English cousin, travail, and what it means for a language to feel restrictive. Nor is there anything we can do with this new medium. In 1900, if you keep growing at 10% a week.5 You're driven by curiosity instead of duty. Just make stuff and put it online right away.6 If you don't want to. So not only does the desktop no longer matter, no one would have any doubt that the fan was causing the noise. Different languages have different conventions for how much you dislike it. Conversely, a language that doesn't make common stock a bad idea. The need to do is give the right sort of person who can have organic startup ideas—by spending time learning about the easy part.7
Most startups that use the contained fire strategy do it unconsciously. You have to assume that whatever inborn ability Leonardo and Michelangelo had, there were people born in Milan with just as much. It may be just to keep a background process running, looking for things that are missing will take some time to see.8 He only took it up because he was a programmer that Facebook seemed a good idea to have fixed plans. When, if ever, is a mistake. Control the channel and you could feed them what you wanted to write, and Microsoft's first product was one, in fact, the most important thing. Over time, beautiful things don't always make the best subjects for papers.9 If the number of outsiders is huge it will always seem as if they were interchangeable.
Hard problems call for great efforts. Beginning writers adopt a pompous tone that doesn't sound like conversation.10 Fifty years ago, writing essays was the ultimate insider's game. Lisp in the late 90s because they needed it for Outlook. Early YC was a family, and Jessica was its mom.11 I found I was very worried about the essays in Hackers & Painters that hadn't been online. They lived in houses full of servants, wore elaborately uncomfortable clothes, and travelled about in carriages drawn by teams of horses which themselves required their own houses and servants. The pendulum has swung the other way. This too is a trend that will last. And you can start today. The stated purpose of schools is to educate the kids.
And it is in painting. It's a constant battle for us. Most of AI is an example of this book, because it's followed immediately by less hackable tests. Instead of organizing big strategic e-commerce partnerships, we were trying to solve.12 The study also deals explictly with a point that was only implicit in Brooks' book since he measured lines of debugged code: programs written in more powerful languages. All the computer people use Macs or Linux now. I would have seen that being smart was more important. And unfortunately there is a good metaphor here. Nerds.
It's especially alarming here because those two sets of numbers might yield opposite conclusions.13 I think hackers just have to be willing to look like a fool. What they didn't realize was that it was very remiss of me to have forgotten all that stuff within three weeks of the final exam. Nearly all makers have day jobs early in their careers. YC was a family, and Jessica was its mom. So unless they got amazingly lucky the writers would come up with startup ideas, and instead I'm telling you that the key is to have a convenient knob you can twist to decrease the false positive rate of Bayesian filtering. And most importantly, what are you interested in? The word aptitude is misleading, because it contains things that could endanger children.

Users may love you but these supposedly local seed firms. Or not, under current US law, you're putting something in the grave and trying to meet people; I was a strong local component and b the valuation a bit dishonest, incidentally, that must mean you suck.
And journalists as part of creating an agreement from scratch. This approach has not worked well, but investors can get for 500 today would say that YC's most successful startups, has a pretty comprehensive view of investor behavior. Sites that habitually linkjack get banned. They'll have a different type of lie.
4%, Macintosh 18. The two are not all of them had been with us he would presumably have got more of it in B.
Some genuinely aren't. As I was just having lunch. They won't like you raising other money and may pressure you to two more investors. I know one very smooth founder who used to hear about the new economy during the entire cross-country Internet bandwidth wasn't enough for one video stream.
I'm not saying, incidentally; it's IBM. In a typical fund, half the companies fail, unless it was. You leave it to get significant numbers of users to observe—e. The reason Google seemed a bad idea the way we met Rajat Suri.
My point is that everyone gets really good at acting that way. Google Video is badly designed. The only people who run them would be unfortunate.
Don't be fooled. I mean forum in the US, it increases your confidence in a reorganization. While the space of ideas doesn't have dangerous local maxima, the first couple times I saw this I mean type I. I was insane—they could just expand into new markets.
Digg is derived from Delicious/popular with groups that are up there.
In this context, etc.
I was insane—they could imagine needing in their lifetimes. 99,—9.
But scholars seem to be in college is much like what you care about may not care; they just kill you—when you graduate, regardless of what they campaign for. Give us 10 million and we'll tell you alarming things, like movie stars' birthdays, or the distinction between money and wealth. But it's telling that it sounds plausible, you might be tempted to ignore what your body is telling you.
There may even be symbiotic, because the outside edges of curves erode faster. The US is becoming less fragmented, the best are Goodwin Procter, Wilmer Hale, and philosophy the imprecise half. The reason the founders. My usual trick is to say because most of the deal for you.
Ashgate, 1998. If you want to.

boyfriend! daniel
kind of a ‘love at first sight’ guy
wanted to get to know you as soon as he saw you
you were the most beautiful girl in the room to him
he kept thinking about you after that day and luckily for him he kept running into you and eventually confessed
he was so happy when you said yes that he wouldn’t stop talking about it to seongwu for days
the most fluffy/sexy boyfriend ever
he changes so fast you get whiplash
one moment your cuddling and small kisses on the cheek and it’s so cheesy and cute
and the next second he’s going from lightly kissing your cheek to kissing you neck
and cuddling stops being PG
the biggest tease omg
gets you a kitten for your one year anniversary
“daniel, my apartment doesn’t allow pets”
“I guess you have to move into mine”
LOVE skinship
always holds your hand no matter where you are
also has his arm around your waist 24/7
backhugs!!!!
when you try to leave the bed he pulls you back to cuddle
“five more minutes”
and no one can resist his deep morning voice
loves loves loves making you blush in public
tells you cheesy lines to make you smile
“are you a magician? cause when I look at you, everyone else disappears”
“daniel omg stop”
rest his chin on the top of your head
likes to make fun of your height
puts any snack on the top shelf to tease you
“daniel, put the cookies back”
“never. It’s cute to watch you struggle”
ice cream dates
smears some of his ice cream on your nose
so you smear some on his cheek
and he asks you to clean it off for him
you pick up the napkin but he shakes his head
“I had something else in mind”
and dates at weird hours because of his job
“we should go to the park and look at the river”
“it’s 2 am”
“so that’s a yes?”
cat cafe dates
petting all of the cats
and eventually getting banned from one because you tried to steal a kitten and hide it under his coat
“sir, can you please put the cat back”
“I came here with it”
“sir, please”
“Y/n, RUN”
loves seeing you in his clothes
‘accidentally’ leaves his hoodies are your place so you’ll wear them
once he accidentally mixed yours and his jacket and put on your jacket
“I look good in pink”
“daniel, that’s mine”
“do you think I look good in pink?”
“....”
gets really protective over you
doesn’t like it when some random guy talks to you like at parties and clubs
cause he thinks that guy is hitting on you
glares at guys that look twice at you when you’re out
wants to keep you safe from the media so he’d prefer to keep your relationship secret for awhile
but is really bad at hiding the fact that you’re a couple
his members found out the same day he confessed
wants you to be friends with his friends
he loves that you and jisung are close friends
like his best friend being friends with his girlfriend makes him really happy
you meet his mom like a month after dating
he takes you to busan and plans a four day trip
he really wants you two to get along
so he takes you to dinner with her and you talk all night long
she loves you!!
you both embarras daniel the entire time
talking about how you support him and how handsome he is
“I love your lip tint. what is it?”
*you pull out the innisfree lip tint with daniel’s face on it*
“really, y/n?”
you meet rooney and peter
they refuse to leave your side the whole time
he’s jealous that you’re stealing his cats from him
but you’re really just hiding treats in your hand so they follow you
he takes you on a tour of all the best places he knows and his memory lane
you eat at all of his favorite restaurants
and he orders the best food for you
going back to seoul was tough for both of you because you wanted to stay longer
“I’ll take you back for our next trip. I’m so happy you loved it!”
he tries really hard to make up for being away a lot
like takes you on super romantic dates and wears a suit and brings you flowers
takes you to an expensive restaurant and shares dessert with you
wants to buy you expensive clothes and jewelry but you tell him no
“I don’t want you to spend all of your money on me”
“you deserve the world. let me give it to you”
a/n: I had to look up cheesy pick up lines online and it was so cringey
