WIP EXCERPT

The king noticed Carina standing against the wall, blinking and relatively composed despite how little sleep they were both getting. Her eye twitched as their gazes locked, but she didn’t break the silence that settled between her and her master, no matter how uncomfortable it grew to become. He would have to find her later, to see if she had discovered anything- to see if they were any closer to resolving this newfound nightmare. But Christian didn’t have the energy for that now, too overwhelmed by his initial discovery that his wife had been taken from right under his nose without anyone’s knowle1dge.

“No.” With only a wave of his hand, the man dismissed the question. “I’m coming, don’t worry about that. If anyone from court calls, I’m not available. If my family asks for me, I’ll be in my study or out riding.” His eyes darted all around the room, as if he expected his enemies to come back for him, like they had forgotten some piece of a puzzle or scheme they had concocted. But no witches or warlocks slipped into the palace; no stepmothers or other wicked relatives snuck by the guards to whisk him away… just how it should have been all those times before. “Carina,” Christian pressed,  unable to hide his fear, “have my agents been in contact yet? They should have arrived with some sort of clue by now- I told them how urgent this was.”

Both women refused to look their ruler in the eyes, some sort of fear settling over them. But they had to know that times were different now; this was not Triana’s palace any longer. Christian made it clear that his staff would not live in fear. He was about to speak again when he received a response.

“Yes, your Majesty. Kell called late last night- you were already sleeping. I didn’t want to wake you, but he assured he would be at the palace as soon as he can. He was dealing with a covert matter abroad but is trying his best to make it here to you as we speak. Your brother-in-law is preparing to leave the Choctaw nation- he’s just strengthening the borders and making sure your people are protected before he does that.” Carina’s voice shook as she fiddled with the hem of her suit jacket. But Christian didn’t question it; this was hard on everyone. Who knew how Kostini was taking it, what was going through his head at this very moment?

The king nodded once; his throat too filled with mucus from crying to form an intelligent response. He ran his finger along the rim of his mug for another moment before getting to his feet and walking out the palace doors. His family was still upstairs and he didn’t feel like sitting at an empty table. The weight of missing his wife was too heavy for this room, this house. He couldn’t be here.

Christian wasn’t sure where he was going until his feet stopped at the stables. His family’s horses whinnied and kicked, and he reached out to each of them, giving the steeds a soft stroke on their nose. He thanked the stable hand that helped saddle Ace, then mounted the stallion and kicked him to life, taking off towards the endless forest. Wind whipped across his face and through his hair, magic whirling around his veins as it sparked.

He didn’t slow the stallion to a stop until he reached the top of a hill overlooking the kingdom. How good of a king could he be if he couldn’t save his wife from threats? What if they came back for his son? Panic welled in the king’s chest, a raging fire as sobs tumbled from him. He couldn’t break at the palace, not when his son needed him to be strong. He couldn’t fall apart when he needed to show his nation that their leaders were strong and capable. In the few years he knew his father, he had never seen the man show any sign of pain, of struggle. Even on the day Veeron told him that his mother had died, Christian hadn’t shed a single tear. Having his wife be a million miles away was a sort of pain he bottled up easily. But maybe the fear made it manageable. Christian wasn’t sure, and it wasn’t as if he could ask his father about any of it. Triana had made sure of that.

Some assholes on Instagram saying that Epic fans are "gaslighting" themselves about Odysseus being faithful to Penelope because of the Circe part and being pretentious about it and how we are stupid for considering The Odyssey romantic

1. The Odyssey is an epic poem we all fucking know that? That it's a tragedy, technically comedy (comedy in ancient literature used to mean "happy ending", not funny stuff)

2. The Circe bit can be interpreted in different ways, as if it was fully consensual or not or just a transaction. There was still a difference in power dynamics, which was 100% mentioned by Calypso in the beginning, but if you choose to ignore that part if the same as saying some of Zeus' kids were ok to be conceived because the women agreeded to what A GOD wanted.

3. Obviously Epic!Odysseus is differente from Homer!Odysseus, but trying to say Homer! Odysseus is a horrible person that fully wanted to cheat on Penelope just because you want to defend ALEXANDER HAMILTON, i have bad news about you.

4. "The crew had to beg to go back!" I read the Odyssey too. As a child and a few days ago. They stayed on Circe's island to rest so Odysseus job as a captain was literally wait until his crew told him they were ready to leave, specially after what they have lived. Odysseus didnt force anyone to stay in that island, when the crew went "oh, sir, we miss our families, please lets go back now, yes?" Odysseus immediately said "ok". It literally felt like a father waiting for the kids to stop playing in the playground.

5. Homer!Odysseus is not perfect, at all (man killed his disloyal maids because he didnt want to deal with shit anymore, even if they also were coerced/raped by the suitors), but come with a better gotcha than Circe. You are just fixiated on the Telegony and it shows.

6. Idk what to tell you, but if you think renouncing a life with two inmortal godesses (one of whom offered you immortality), traveling for 10 years defying a God's rage, killing 108 men who wanted to marry your wife (and ruined your house), almost killed yourself when said wife rejected you only for her to go "haha i was just testing you, silly :)", have your literally marriage have a word created for you two specifically is not romantic... Idk go read Bridgerton

the thing is there's like, a point of oversaturation for everything, and it's why so many things get dropped after a few minutes. and we act like millennials or gen z kids "have short attention spans" but... that's not quite it. it's more like - we did like it. you just ruined it.

capitalism sees product A having moderate success, and then everything has to come out with their "own version" of product A (which is often exactly the same). and they dump extreme amounts of money and environmental waste into each horrible simulacrum they trot out each season.

now it's not just tiktokkers making videos; it's that instagram and even fucking tumblr both think you want live feeds and video-first programming. and it helps them, because videos are easier to sneak native ads into. the books coming out all have to have 78 buzzwords in them for SEO, or otherwise they don't get published. they are making a live-action remake of moana. i haven't googled it, but there's probably another marvel or starwars something coming out, no matter when you're reading this post.

and we are like "hi, this clone of project A completely misses the point of the original. it is soulless and colorless and miserable." and the company nods and says "yes totally. here is a different clone, but special." and we look at clone 2 and we say "nope, this one is still flat and bad, y'all" and they're like "no, totally, we hear you," and then they make another clone but this time it's, like, a joyless prequel. and by the time they've successfully rolled out "clone 89", the market is incredibly oversaturated, and the consumer is blamed because the company isn't turning a profit.

and like - take even something digital like the tumblr "live streaming" function i just mentioned. that has to take up server space and some amount of carbon footprint; just so this brokenass blue hellsite can roll out a feature that literally none of its userbase actually wants. the thing that's the kicker here: even something that doesn't have a physical production plant still impacts the environment.

and it all just feels like it's rolling out of control because like, you watch companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into a remake of a remake of something nobody wants anymore and you're like, not able to afford eggs anymore. and you tell the company that really what you want is a good story about survival and they say "okay so you mean a YA white protagonist has some kind of 'spicy' love triangle" and you're like - hey man i think you're misunderstanding the point of storytelling but they've already printed 76 versions of "city of blood and magic" and "queen of diamond rule" and spent literally millions of dollars on the movie "Candy Crush Killer: Coming to Eat You".

it's like being stuck in a room with a clown that keeps telling the same joke over and over but it's worse every time. and that would be fine but he keeps fucking charging you 6.99. and you keep being like "no, i know it made me laugh the first time, but that's because it was different and new" and the clown is just aggressively sitting there saying "well! plenty of people like my jokes! the reason you're bored of this is because maybe there's something wrong with you!"
