I wanted to vent, but also ask an honest question. Since I was a teenager, I always wanted to work on character design. And one thing that always caught my attention was how I always preferred male character designs over female ones. My first thought was that I was always more into androgynous fashion and more masculine styles. But time passed and I came to the conclusion that it wasn't just that, and it seems that male characters can always be different things: fat, thin, handsome, ugly, short, tall, young, old, etc. and female characters, for the most part, fall into two categories: cute or sexy. I wanted some tips on how I can make female characters with more interesting designs, without having to fall into those two categories. I love your work and you managed to make someone else like the three musketeers <3<3

Hello ! That's definitely a good question and something I think about a lot. The bias towards beauty is very strong in character design and it takes a conscious effort to diversify output in that regard.

That sort of advice might be a bit obvious, but one habit I picked up from the director on my first feature film gig was to actually "cast" characters. Without reference, we tend to go for the kind of symmetrical face and "average" features mostly out of stylistic habit. I like to look at character actors with distinct faces (I like this pinterest page that has a lot of faces in one place) but also just acquaintances or pictures of random crowds.

When designing a character, at first I'm always building a big reference board trying to decide what Type of Guy (gender neutral) I'm going for, trying use photos rather than other people's art, because I want to rely on automatics and graphic symbols as little as possible. Whether I'm designing a man or a woman or other, I use references of fashion styles and people across the board in terms of gender so I keep the scope open. Sometimes a character ref board for me will be a picture of one of my aunts next to a bunch of screenshots of Columbo. In my experience, a lot of the times, it's mostly about going with styles and archetypes the same way you would for a male character, and switching it up somewhere along the way by looking at real women in your life and beyond as a grounding mechanism. Sometimes that will mean changing almost nothing, because the borders between genders and how you characterize them is blurry and fluid, and sometimes it will mean using features that are uniquely tied to some sort of female experience.

I enjoy realism and I think getting more proficient at it did help me diversify my designs (I find that more difficult to do with more minimalistic styles). Still, I am mostly a fantasy artist and in my case that comes with some amount of stylization and idealization of shapes and looks. I'm far from perfect in my biases and I'm not going out of my way to draw "ugly" characters because that doesn't mean much to me ; I try to draw inspiration from the faces of every day people and I associate it with my love for fashion. It's also worth noting the work I post here for fun is a lot more hash tag aesthetic than the stuff I do professionally where diversity is much more important.

I don't know if any of that is relevant but that's definitely an interesting topic ! I'd love to know others' perspective and tips on the matter.

—Meet the Cast!—

(Part Four: The Neglected Rich and Loved)

(Trigger Warning: Patricia's section contains allusions to child neglect, abuse, use by parents, manipulation, and devaluing of self-worth. It doesn't go too heavily into detail, in my opinion, because the entire post is supposed to be structured like an article written from an outsider's perspective, but it's still there. Please consider either skipping the whole thing together or scrolling down to Alzamirano(Actor!Soos)'s section if you're sensitive to this type of content.)

Patricia:

Patricia has made her mark in the world as one of the most famous tweens of this day and age. Originally, her family was just your average one, living in common mediocrity. However, one day the young blonde asked her parents if she could participate in a beauty pageant, believing that it would be fun. They decided that it couldn't hurt and prehaps give their unplanned mistake of a daughter to become something worthy of their attention for once, so she was enrolled into the annual "Sprouting Elegance" contest. She immediately won and was gifted millions of dollars as the cash price. The amount of money was unlike any her parents had seen before, the luxurious life it allowed them to live was addicting. Thus, they became to crave more of it, desiring more and more, so that they would never have to live how they had before. Driven by greed Deciding that it would build character, they soon began to enroll her in numerous other pageants, collecting waves of money. They started a family blog to post updates on their life, displaying just how lovely and wonderful their family was, how they were living the dream. Patricia certainly dreamed; she dreamed of a world where she never came up with the idea, where she had better parents.

Eventually, her mother came to her and suggested developing a career in something that would let her put her pretty face to even more good use — acting! It would build an even more stable living for them her and maximize their her success. It was perfect! There was no reason to decline, no reason at all. So, of course, Patricia accepted and went along with whatever acting roles they were able to find for her. I mean, why wouldn't she? They knew best. Besides, without them, she would have never earned the stardom everyone else could hope of receiving. Without them, she was nothing. They created her. They were the ones who molded her into the perfect child, into who she was today. The least she could do for them was every. Little. Thing. They. Asked.

It wasn't that difficult for her to rise to the top as a child actor, considering she was already famous and of much status. Her most recent role was playing popular, rich girl "Pacifica Northwest" in the TV series "Gravity Falls". When asked on she felt about the character, she gave an intriguing response.

"It's complicated. And to-tally none of your— ... I mean, it's...personal. I feel like I know her very well and not just because I'm her actress. Though, I probably know her the best out of everyone solely because of that. That's all I'll say. You figure it out if you're so obsessed with mysteries (and me), weirdos," she said when delving into her implied love-hate relationship with the character she played.

She can frequently be found hanging out with Hadron (actor of "Fiddleford McGucket"). When she first arrives on set — her dad leaving as soon as she walks through the doors to there — she stands around, her eyes scanning through the clusters of people hanging about. She then will walk on over to where Hadron is ( typically talking to a bushing Stan [actor of "Stanley Pines"]) and tug on the sleeve of his fern green, button-up shirt in order to get his attention. He will turn his head and smile at her, and the two will engage in conversation. The mere sight of him always makes her eyes light up and twinkle, though she will try to act like she doesn't care.

She's also decently close to Mason (actor of "Dipper Pines") and his best friend, Mabel (actor of "Mabel Pines"). Mabel will occasionally drag Patricia over to where she and Mason are, and they'll all talk together as a trio. Mabel will knit a sweater, using Patricia as a model as she does, and will chatter away about stuff that delights her as the blonde and other brunette exchange amused looks, entertained by their friend's antics. In reverse, Patricia will kidnap Mason and paint his face with makeup, promising to turn him into the 'most beautiful boy who's ever lived' as Mabel giggles loudly at the scene. (Mason either swears at her the whole time or fumes in silence when this happens; Patricia only smirking in return.) When their peppy friend is not around, the duo will fire insults at each other like the sun won't come out tomorrow (some of them were used as inspiration for the actual script of the "Northwest Mansion Mystery" episode).

Also, contrary to popular belief, Patricia's hair really is naturally blonde.

Alzamirano:

Alzamirano, or commonly referred to as simply "Alza," was cast as the actor of "Jesus 'Soos' Ramirez" from the show "Gravity Falls". He was an orphan as a kid before he was adopted by a nurturing family. Their love and care allowed him to blossom into a kind person who always looked out for and after others. In order to give other orphans like himself a chance and a better place to grow up than in some of the terrible orphanages they're placed in, he started his own orphanage. That way, he could try his best to help the community and know he was giving every effort to truly assist people.

However, running an orphanage wasn't cheap, so he took up multiple jobs. He became a cook, a bus driver, a tour guide, etcetera, etcetera. Eventually, he stumbled across an ad requiring understudies for a film. It stated that they didn't have to be professionals and the salary was reasonable, so he decided to sign up. Last minute, the main actor he was an understudy for ended up calling off, so he had to take their place. Stepping into the spotlight and performing felt natural, and the crowd loved his show. Soon after, he started to get calls for jobs. He had found a career he could truly become successful with and gain a steady pay from to keep his orphanage stable and thriving.

On set, he's very a chill guy who gets along well with Mabel and, in all honesty, who wouldn't? He inquires about the living conditions for all for the children and has been seen to check in on Patricia specifically on a regular basis. He's bought multiple clothes and packages of food for her after realizing that she pretty much wears the same four pairs clothes all the time, just in different combinations, and how unhealthily thin she appears to be.

"Do you really have to try and spread gossip? Don't you have anything better to do or is your life just so sad that you live off of other people's lives to be fulfilled. Anything and everything about her personal life is personal! It's in the name. She's not required to share anything with you, nor am I. Why Mr. Alzamirano does what he does and what he suspects, if anything at all, is none of your business. You want to know something? He's a nice person and the stuff he does is nice. There you go. There's your hot scoop. Go crazy over it," Mason defensively stated when we questioned him about the Alza's gifts for Patricia.

He's friends with Stan and appreciative of the constant donations he sends towards the orphanage he runs.

Since you’re in casting, I’d love to pick your brain a little about selecting actors. I love that Jared is a constantly rising star, but in the most loving way possible, he really isn’t the best actor. 80% of the time when I’m watching him, it feels like I’m watching someone acting. He’s not the most natural Versus someone whose performance I get lost in. That doesn’t mean I’m not going to watch everything he does, and it kind of seems standard for cable network TV (for example, I feel the same ways about Nathan Fillion, David Boreanaz, Matthew Daddario - but it doesn’t make me like them any less). Honestly, the only network TV show they didn’t make me feel that was is Hannibal, and even that was only the leading actors.

I would have assumed that acting ability would be the most important part, but your page has made me realize it’s more than that, and let’s be honest, Vampire Diaries wouldn’t haven’t gotten that far if acting was the most important skill set needed. I’m guessing for the Jared’s and David’s their entire history counts most, but what about for someone just getting hired - the Jared getting the Gilmore Girl’s role or the David getting the Angel role. If they’re acting seems…stiff (wrong word?) what makes a casting director say, ‘you know what, let’s give it to them anyway.’

It’s just such a hard world to break into and I’m guessing there are auditions from people with a little more natural talent, so what makes that final decision?

(Asking as someone who is about to start the audition process)

I think what Jared (and Nathan, David, etc) has doing for him is he acts from his authentic truth. I'll expand on it later in this post. With that said, Jared is a character actor trapped in a leading man role, it's why he's not the "best actor" because people tend to believe that good character actors disappear into their roles by diminishing their screen presence, which you can't do when you're a leading man. You may be picking up on this conflicting issue. Think of Brad Pitt who works best as a supporting actor (X), and struggles a bit as a leading man so he has to throw out nuances and reply more on his raw charisma.

I haven't seen Gilmore Girls but I read Jared was the 2nd or 3rd Dean. Dean was recast because the OG Deans' chemistry with Rory wasn't up to snuff. So that answer your "final decision" question, which is chemistry. David Boreanaz had good chemistry with Sarah Michelle Geller. His chemistry Emily Deschanel in Bones was fine, bordering on good, but it was more fun/odd couple vibe whereas his interaction with Michelle had depth. Whenever Jared and Jensen tell their chemistry audition story in front of the producers, I'm pretty sure they're leaving out that Jared likely had chemistry auditions with other various Dean actors.

My advice on auditions is walk into that room like you’re going to solve their problem. 

Most casting directors talk about wanting auditioning actors to "make bold choices" because they believe it will get in touch with their authentic self and therefore, make them a captivating performer. My advice is adjust the text to your authentic emotion so that you're reacting to the events of the story from your internal truth. It doesn’t matter if the story is a sci-fi, comedy, or a period piece drama: if we don’t believe the actors, we won’t care what happens to them in the story. The audience is an incredible lie-detector: the average person has, for their entire life, been storing countless passive data on how normal people react to various situations, so you can’t fool them.  

My CD used to say that it's easier to tell the truth on camera than it is to lie because once you believe in yourself, then you're not acting anymore. I don't 100% agree with her but that seems to be what most CDs think.

The more confidently you use yourself as a canvas and let the context of the scene speak through your own emotional repertoire and point of view, the more compelling and interesting you are to watch. The most interesting or captivating actor is the one whose next movement, facial expression, or line reading is unpredictable. That's the difference between Jeff Bridges (unpredictable) and Beu Bridges (reliable).

The BoBs really think Ryan confirmed their ship is happening because he said "whatever happens happens" and he didn't outright say it wouldn't happen. Uhm he did say that in his "Eddie is a heterosexual man, Buck's straight friend that he came out to, and it's so nice that a straight man and a bi man can be friends" interview and y'all didn't believe him. Not to mention JLH telling them it wasn't going to happen, and then backtracking when the BoBs went crazy.

But we're the deluded ones for shipping bucktommy after just three episodes and Tommy being a plot device (apparently).

Well. People are free to think what they want, obviously. I don't even see much of what the BoBs are saying, only what is shared in the buck/tommy tags because I value my peace way too much to go look into the chaos.

"Whatever happens happens" means "you don't get to decide". Also how do they know that it's not Ryan who said no eventually?

They're angry because they now realize their fantasy won't become canon and like a bunch of toddlers who realize they won't have the toy they thought they would get, they throw a temper tantrum. And I can understand the disappointment. But not the reaction. Not the violence in their posts. There's no love for the show there, for the creative minds, for the effort of representation, for the people who work hard to make it happen. They're not fans. They just saw two cute men and projected their fantasies on them, whatever the story or the character development.

Yes, some choices don't make much sense in canon, I even myself would have enjoyed to see Eddie and Buck together at the beginning. It would have been cute, with Christopher loving them both so much too. But that's not what happened and they definitely wrote them in a way that doesn't leave any doubt if you don't try to read so hard between lines that don't even exist. People need to accept a story for what it is, and if they don't like it, they can live in complete denial of it. There's no shame in that but do it with respect. Your fantasy is yours.

The hate against Tommy is also their problem. They can hate him all they want but they twist everything about him to fit their hateful narrative. Queer characters deserve respect. Well, most of them, a queer pos is still a pos. But Tommy has been brought back into the show and written with respect for the character, for the story and for his purpose: being Buck's new romance. Not only he already existed in the show but also has history with the 118 and has a significant shared story with Hen and Chim. He's already a characters in itself, he just came back.

Having a character like Tommy is also more than just a interesting character. It's a necessary character. He fits the cishet macho mold so perfectly: veteran, pilot, firefighter, buff, confident, professional, brave. But he's GAY AF. And everything he does is respectful and kind. And haters have to rely on lying to show him in a bad light because so far, there's nothing. Imagine what this kind of character looks like for the average audience? It's great representation for us queer.

In the end, BoBs can hate all they want, Buck and Tommy together is canon, Tommy has only shown positive traits so far, he's shown sane boundaries and respect for other's. When haters have to rely on details, and still twist them, to justify their hate, you know they know they're wrong. They know, but they can't give up now that they've reach this level of hate.

All I would ask of them would be to stop the hate against real life people and stop pulling them into the drama (the live with JLH was NO THAT. Shame on them). Let the fandom be at war between ships if you need that to feel something but leave real people out of that, especially actors and Lou in particular. They're paid to play and this is not a service. You're not a client they have to satisfy because you paid for a specific performance. The bullying and entitlement need to stop.

This Hilbert and Doug morality debate is funny because it's literally one actor debating with himself.

it's a weird place to fall where I always end up falling in the writers/creators weren't intending to go anywhere with x and/or they didn't intend what's there. and I have to reconcile that with them being the same people who put all of that stuff there in the first place

I know gaslit gets thrown around willy nilly these days but sometimes I do feel crazy haha when a tptb says they weren't even doing or considering something or don't see something a particular way, when...how do you do things like that accidentally? when scenes and lines are deliberately written and included and actors have acted and edits have highlighted.

it's like, 'what they've done is genius and emotionally compelling and all that's there is what they've created. no I don't trust them to continue this because when they speak they deny knowledge of the thing they've created itself and appear to have no understanding or care for it at all.'

Sorry for taking so long to answer this, I've been so busy and tired this week.

I understand what you're saying. And I think it's also the fact that those of us who are in fandom, and who really engage with the source material on a completely different level than the average audience helps to blur the line between what the creators intended and what we interpret. Because it might not be a huge thing to the creators, it might be something that is easy to miss. If you're not spending hours upon hours looking for these specific things to confirm your headcanons and or theories, you know. But at the same time I made a post a while ago where I said that a lot of, mainly the straight audience, don't pick up on things that has to do with queerness. Which was clearly shown with fans of Ted Lasso when SO many people were surprised that Trent, Keeley and Colin are all queer. Despite the fact that the queer audience have been talking about them being queer since basically season 1.

It's a tricky situation with the whole "what did they intend, did something happen on the way, or did they not realise what they were putting out there". It's also difficult to know if they were stopped, if they intended to go somewhere but they were stopped by something or someone along the way. And then they won't be able to talk about it and they deny everything instead. That it was never their intention to imply whatever it is we as the audience saw, you know.

Now, I never thought that they'd make Ted/Trent canon, I loved writing meta about it. Had a lot of fun with it, and I do believe that if they wanted to go there they could easily do it with what's already been established by the show. The same goes with Ted being bi. I more or less headcanon all characters I like as bi until proved otherwise, with some exceptions, Trent for example was always gay in my mind (except if they say they are straight, sorry not sorry, bi realisation it is!) And I think that they've opened the door for that to be the next thing Ted has to deal with in his personal life. What I did think was that Trent had romantic feelings for Ted, which James Lance confirmed, thank you James! Which again is something that James put into his acting choices, and that we picked up on. That was 100% intentional.

As for Roy/Jamie/Keeley… I never really thought that they would have them all be together, I thought that would be too out there for the show. And I definitely don't pick up any romantic feelings between Roy and Jamie, sorry about that to those who ship them. I wouldn't have hated it, but I wasn't invested in it. But I do have to say that I hated what they did with them as characters, Roy and Jamie fighting over Keeley and then the weird "you get to choose" thing. Like who the fuck are you??? Season one Roy and Jamie doing something like that… sure, okay, it would still have been weird but I could maybe see it happening. Season three Roy and Jamie, absolutely not! I think it was supposed to be kind of funny but it just wasn't, it was insulting to all three of them and the progress they'd made.

Before I begin, I want to specify that I am saying this as someone who likes Theil/their ships, also gets insecure about doubles and also feels like shit sometimes because of a lack of interaction. 1. The real answer is they do. You do get asks. 95% of blogs only get asks about their ships/ocs via ask memes. You actually get other asks. And you've said that even if you'd like more rp partners, you actually have a rp friend that cares about them. People just don't ask *as* much as you want them to. And to be honest I think your standards/expectations are not only unhealthy but also quite unrealistic.

I know everyone wants validation on your ships and "hur dur you should do it for yourself" is true but we all feel happier when someone cares. But you are usually comparing yourself to the top most popular accounts period. Should the average person that likes to play sports compare themselves to someone they see on TV all the time? Probably not. Is a local theater actor bad and worthless just because their theater isn't making millions like Hollywood productions?

While your posts don't have that many notes, people are more interested in your stuff than you think. My posts about my f/os/random thoughts usually get 3-7 likes (yes it fluctuates that much) but people have almost NEVER come into my askbox to ask about my ships unless it's to practice karma for a meme. It has happened twice in like...the 5+ years I have been in the community.

You also say you don't get letters but I do see one in your blog every once in a while. I haven't gotten one in literally two years.

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. The top 5% that gets tons of interactions and asks? More than half of those asks are their friends or people they talk to/interact with a lot. People who get constant f/o letters? I can assure you 9 out of 10 times a friend sent it.

People will just care more about the ships of someone they consider a friend or someone who they feel like is interested in their ships too. How much do you care about most ships on the dash vs your rp partner's ones? It's give and receive. Either that, or they pump out tons of art (which isn't something most people can do). Because as sad as this may sound, art is more "instant" to consume than writing or lore dumping (not saying art can't be analyzed or deep or that's its just pretty images but you get what I'm saying) and gets people interested faster

Let's be honest, 90% of selfship fics get 1-4 notes (and none of them are rbs with tags gushing or commenting). Blogs who get more than 5 snd/or actually have people gushing in the notes are people who have tons of friends on a huge taglist. Again. 90% of fics get zero traction. Doesb't mesn you shouldn't write them or send them to your friends. But it's unhealthy to expect tons of notes on them

Last night wasn't about asks, I was pretty happy there, it was about interactions with that "post your ship and whoever likes/reblog supports your ship. People were getting 20-100+ notes and if u take off my rbs on mine I didn't even have 10. I was seeing people who ship w the same character get rbs from mutuals that didn't even like my post. And the rp I'm talking Abt w that is self ship. I do love my rp but my frustration comes from not having someone who wants to rp my fos.

MOST of the instances of that meme had at least 20 notes, and only like 2 that I saw had single digit notes. And especially w other shippers of my f/os getting more notes than me made me feel like ppl don't . And yeah in other cases I tend to focus on the most popular people which is why I'm trying to to limit my interaction w nonmutuals that get a lot of engagement, but in this case the average seemed to be 15-20 notes.

It's hard to feel like people are paying attention sometimes honestly. And I get that I get more engagement than a lot of ppl but there's still this "I'm basically just yelling into the void, the stuff I'm saying is only interesting to me/contradicts canon and I don't realize/sucks in some other way" feeling u know? I often don't get letters when I'm asking for them for comfort. Yeah there are time I do but there are more times I don't and then I'm stuck w my emotions which is. Not fun. Can you imagine? It's has been 13 years since the world of Berk and the archipelago opened up to us. Since we entered this crazy, viking village 12 degrees north from hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death.

I reckon the HTTYD anniversaries might kick off a little differently for fans all over the globe depending on its opening, because DreamWorks commemorated the HTTYD's 13 years on the 22nd of March on Instagram, though I distinctly remember it opening where I was on the 27th because it was also my birthday and I wanted to watch a movie.

Which means, yes, guys, I'm turning 24 today! HAHA! To mark this double celebration, I thought of doing something fun and a little different from my usual posts just to get the ball rolling. So, question, have you guys ever watched She's Out of My League?

She's Out of My League is a Jay Baruchel movie. A rom-com produced by Paramount Pictures AND (wait for it...) DreamWorks Pictures. It was released in March 2010 which meant that our Hiccup-voice-actor here had two movies playing at the cinema simultaneously.

I remembered that I wasn't allowed to watch the movie, but my older brother (10 years older than me) snuck me into the theatres to watch. I remember him covering my eyes for a bit and not understanding a lot of the humour back then, but I did remember the premise, so here goes...

Premise:

Kirk (Jay Baruchel) is your everyday, average Joe. Coupled w the fact that he is somewhat a pushover and insidiously insecure, he tries to get back with his manipulative ex-girlfriend Marni. After that failed, he stumbles onto the path of the beautiful Molly, who by beauty standards, personality and life-style choices is considered a hard 10, while he is rated a mere 5.

When Molly seems to take an interest in Kirk, the whole world is put out of balance and their friends smell impending doom by virtue of their different "social ratings." However, are these standards real, or just a social construct that needs debunking?

I'm not here to criticise the movie. I'm sure we all have our thoughts. Nor am I saying that this movie or the romantic storyline holds a candle to the HTTYD franchise or Hiccstrid, but, it was hilarious to discover a number of parallels between these two worlds.

THEME, MESSAGE & STORYLINE

(1) IT ISN'T ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK LIKE, BUT WHO YOU ARE ON THE INSIDE

It's a cliche to say, beauty is from within. But it doesn't make it less true. I think what makes Molly attractive is because she is a really nice person, adaptable. Her beauty is an aspect of it. Imagine if Molly had Marni's personality. The story would've turned differently.

This is also Kirk's selling point. The pinnacle of his entire personality is the nice guy card, it's what attracts Molly.

Likewise w Hiccup, he is a genuinely good guy. You can't fault him for his courtesy. Though Kirk's personality seems more like a caricature of Hiccup's, ironically. And, Hiccup's strength and leadership is not something you'd notice on his person but in him.

(2) YOU NEED TO BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOURSELF

I loved Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man [Episode 8, Season 1 (Riders of Berk)] for many reasons, but mainly because it was the episode Hiccup proves to himself that he is worthy.

She's Out of My League was a movie about Kirk learning that he is worthy. That he isn't just a five, that this whole rating system is nonsense. He was always good enough for Molly, he was never good enough for himself.

He ends up flying a plane, which is a life long dream of his, he dreamt of becoming a pilot. And well, we all know that if Hiccup existed today, and was a real person, he would've been a pilot too. Maybe in the AirForce, on a jet black plane named Toothless.

Kirk and Molly have roughly the same hair colour as Hiccup and Astrid. My favourite scenes in She's Out of My League are the romantic montages of them going out. This is one of my favourite shots from the show:

THE ROMANTIC MONTAGES IN SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE FELT LIKE A HICCSTRID AU FAN FICTION GOT PRODUCED INTO A MUSIC VIDEO!

I'm not recommending you guys watch this show by the way. If you haven't that is. If you're not used to this type of adult-comedy, you might not like it. The pacing is a little choppy, and it does slap you w many cringy moments. But sometimes, its just so ridiculously hopeless you can't help but laugh.

I don't remember if the show did well, but its not a bad movie (to me). It was underrated for what it was trying to accomplish, but it could definitely do w some refining . Like, I would've loved it if they developed the characters and the romance more.

But at the time the movie was released, I think a lot of people related to Kirk. The whole, "on a scale of 1 to 10" thing has messed w a lot of confidences.

As a teenager, I reckon that's more of a problem. I remember that popular girls in school were always pretty and the hot guys were always good looking. And well, it's hard to not believe that looks don't play a part.

But, once I grew out of it, I honestly found those attributes to come in second to many other qualities of a person. Looks just happen to be a bonus. Hahaha, look at me, a day older and already issuing unsolicited advice.

I don't even think it's so much that Tom is way more affected by it than Z, I just think that Tom is more vocal about it? 🤷

Z herself has stopped posting personal things to her sm accounts for years... Idk if you've noticed. It's just kind of rare that she does now days. She used to post (Especially on SnapChat lol) ALL the time... the WHOLE DAY in fact! 😅🤣 While I do miss those days and glimpses into her personal life, I can totally understand why she stopped doing it. Not only is she trying to be seen as a more "serious actress", but she is also a grown woman now, AND, she probably realized that fans were getting a little TOO much of her private life and it wasn't healthy. 😔

I think that the more followers she got, the less "safe" she felt posting certain things online. Just my theory. She even mentioned this in interviews a while back about how social media makes her anxious and also how she kind of lost the desire to post on social media, especially because she feels this pressure to post...

Zendaya also admits to being a shy child growing up, and so this too probably also plays a part.

Overall, I just think that social media may affect various people differently? 🤷 Tom might be highly sensitive to certain things. T and Z are two totally different people, so they feel differently about different things. What may affect me may not affect you, and vice versa. I also feel like the MALE fandoms can be waaay more overwhelming sometimes. 🥴 I feel like male celebrities have way more fans lol...or, shall I say, they have more of the teenage/younger female fans who can sometimes be quite fickle (love you one minute, hate you the next lol 😅🤣), and maybe Tom just isn't used to that pressure?? I mean, being famous (especially at his level) is a LOT of pressure. Female celebrities get a lot of hate too (a lot of times worse than the guys imo because they have to also deal with sexism, misogyny, etc.) make no mistake. But it just seems like male celebrities (on average) tend to have wider fanbases or something lol. 😅

It's Beautiful Now Lee Hyun-jae appreciation post

I'm writing this down way before the series final episode. I'm not even half way through so before there's some major plot twist (who knows if something might go wrong) I decided to write a few nice things about Lee Hyun-jae. There were moments of me being low-key angry at this character for a couple of reasons, but ... I won't be mentioning those reasons now, since those are minor. Plus he redeemed himself on time. He's a good one. This is all about his good sides and me idolising the sh out Hyun-jae. I think he deserves this afterall. Plus, it's fun.

It's some sports drink, no worries. Just imagine having a person like this in your life, ok? It's going to be good for your mental health. Let's go (⁠◠⁠‿⁠・⁠)⁠—⁠☆

Hyun-jae is first introduced as a highly professional lawyer. He works at his colleague's law firm and together they make a successful business duo. At job, he makes sure his clients are well taken care of and that they receive enough respect from his side, never crossing the line. His social skills are advanced and he reads people like they're an open book. Not only that, but he also successfully juggles between his three main roles: witted son/brother, serious lawyer and supportive boyfriend. Throughout many problematic situations we see him adapting quickly and responding in intelligent manner while being considerate and empathic. He has a special talent of getting the best out of people around him. And I'm here for it all the way.

Then there's this other side to him. Writers spiced him up a bit before deciding which turn to take, which made him realistic for a brief moment. It takes some time before they show it to us, way more than for any other character. He's goofy. Witty. Easy-going. Honest. Straightforward. Extroverted. Emotionally developed. Like really well developed. This is how you know he's the only character writers had to make up as opposed to others who are so realistic it gets annoying quite often.

(skip this if you don't want to read about the actor) Also, one thing that is so important, but regarding the actor who plays Hyun-jae, this is already 2nd drama I watched where this actor plays very similar characters (first one being Hit the Top/The Best Hit), which I wasn't expecting at all. Even both characters have same names lol! I guess he sealed his career with his role choices, just like some actors are doomed to play villains. So, now I really want to watch his other dramas as well, just for this kind/good/playful energy this actor brings to life in characters he plays. And I already saw someone else mentioning this exact same thing here on tumblr, I'm not sure which drama it was about, but they mentioned this same character energy and then figuring out way later it's the same actor in both series. It's Yoon Shi-yoon. And I totally get why people like him so much. It's not so difficult to identify the characters he plays with his own personality, when he keeps playing the same role again and again. That seems like awfully a lot of pressure if I may add, no matter how ideal it may sound at first. But let's get back to Hyun-jae. Moving on.

This scene was heartwarming, honestly. Let me melt in his problem-solving energy for a while. Like, yes. I love this type of people. So much.

It seems Hyun-jae enjoys being the active one in a relationship, being the leader and provider. He takes the initiative while considering his partner's preferences. It's a bit difficult to stay indifferent to that. He doesn't stop being this ideal man just like that. He also kows his way around overly protective 2 meters tall brothers and doesn't let a perfectly healthy power struggle hurt his ego.

Oh and I never mentioned his relationship with driving.

Girls, if he doesn't act like Hyun-jae while driving, run! Honestly. Just run. That's the bare minimum. Driving style is a great indicator of a character. Especially if you ask him not to do something.

He's normal about driving. Almost as if he's written by a woman. First thing is he never drives when drinking (and he doesn't even drink much in general), second, he's calm while driving, and third, he listens to music while driving. Find me a guy who can do all three, I dare you. Also, he helps his girlfriend overcome her fear of driving. His fictional gf is lucky, lucky.

At first I thought Mirae and Hyun-jae are a bad match, but as the show goes on, they seem complementary to each other.

Men apologizing? I'm sorry, let me just.. (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠) ..... Anyways, I really started to enjoy their dynamics, his patience towards her and her persistence to let go of angst. It's lovely to watch their progress. And lack of hot and cold behaviour. Yes. Give me that reassurance. Fix my attachment issues. Kamsahamnida🫰🏻

Other than that, be ready for some cute surprises. He prepares his delicious specialties for people he cares about. He casually serenades his girlfriend and gives her surprise visits before going to work. Also, if for any reason he needs to keep someone's secret, he'll actually do it. Efficiently.

Eomoni, I would, gladly, and every other girl probably. His mom is harsh because he's the middle child, 2nd oldest who isn't married yet, so it only makes sense, but she's such a sweetheart to her family.

Besides practicing assertiveness, he's pretty good at avoiding unnecessary family drama in a smart way. He makes it look so easy. Somehow he always stays true to his moral compass, plus if everything I mentioned before didn't already imply it, he is competent enough to take care of himself and is enjoying his independence. Where does this list stop? It doesn't, that's why non existent guys are the best. They act grown up, responsible and they're the whole package, a whole lot like all in 1 dishwasher tabs.

Nature's best anxiolytic in a human form. Well, he's as fictional as it gets and makes you wish you were too. At this point I'm not sure if I'd rather date him or be him.

If something changes about this character by the end of the show, then, oops. For now let's leave it as it is, hopefully he stays smart. With the power of Pluto, I summon more people like this one into all of our lives. (⁠◠⁠‿⁠・⁠)⁠—⁠☆

-it's them anon *shrugs and cries a little*. them, their love for each other is so out of this world. they've sacrificed so much to be together, they love each other so deeply and are such an integral part of each other's lives and god they fit so fucking well ??? they connected the moment they met and they are each other's other halves!! it's something out of a movie or some shit like godddddd. they drive us insane by just being THEM !!! separately even i have never seen two better men who try so hard to be good, who give us their all and let themselves loose, who love so beautifully. and together they're perfect. their love story is one for the ages and i admire it and cherish it so much. they struggle with it all yet love each other so much and it's not like it's even subtle it's out their for EVERYONE TO SEE. Yeah there's really no fake it till you make it so to speak on Broadway? Singing, acting and dancing 8 shows a weeks for months is brutal and requires a lot more skit and talent then most work in show business. That's why when it comes to theater even the decent, nothing special performers are still a lot more talented then your average singer or actor. I'm not too familiar with Beanie's work, from the previews that were posted she can sing, she's not bad. But being able to sing like that, in a show like Funny Girl which is extremley difficult, on a consistent basis? Just being an good singer is not enough.

Honestly, having listened to those previews and bootlegs I think that "good" is generous. Maybe community theater good. But then again, we're both hearing snippets--maybe she's better beyond that, but based on the amount of time she's supposed to work and the strain that would cause... I doubt it.

I'm honestly not here for the "poor Beanie" sympathy act people are putting on. Regardless of who was going to replace her, I think this entire thing is a bad look for her. She's never impressed me as an actress (I thought she was actually quite bad in Impeachment and made a woman who was undeniably in a very sad position come off as annoying). I find it pretty demeaning that people basically say "give her a pass, she's fat". Beanie's weight should never be mocked or made fun of, but it also doesn't mean that she deserves a role more than a skinny person who's more talented than her, ya know?

The reality is that Beanie got the role because the show was built around her--likely because her connections financially boosted it. There are much more talented Jewish actresses (and, I imagine, fat and queer Jewish actresses) who could have done this role. She got the role not because she worked as hard as the vast majority of girls on the come up in theater, but because she was connected. She didn't have the voice necessary for this role. I don't know if any amount of training could've forced that--but I have heard that she didn't train as much as some would've liked, and tbh? The fact that she's missed somewhere around 40 shows makes me feel like that's true. COVID is of course one thing, but I tend to feel like she just wasn't liking the reviews she was getting. And she shouldn't have.

The reality is that getting bad reviews isn't being bullied. Many performers have received worse and have gone on with the show until it closed. Beanie couldn't hack it, and regardless of who was going to replace her I'd be glad to see her replaced because like... I won't pretend to be a Broadway expert but I do love it, and I also won't pretend that Beanie is the only person on Broadway who's benefited from nepotism... Benefiting from nepotism doesn't even make me dislike you--if you can follow the nepotism with talent.

She couldn't. I don't feel bad for her. You're right--being a good singer isn't enough for Funny Girl. She'll be fine. As a former prime minister recently said, them's the breaks.

I just honestly wish that someone who was genuinely able to single this role had been cast from the start, ya know? I've heard her understudy sing--she sounds really good! If she'd been it from the beginning, presented as "the next big thing"... Maybe the show could've done well. Because Beanie was so poorly reviewed and the buzz began about her constantly calling out, ticket sales dropped. So they have to turn around an expensive show that's flopping, which means stunt casting Lea Michele.

Like, don't get me wrong--I hate Lea as a person. She's talented as hell; I don't have to like you to be fair. And she will most likely bring the house down with those songs. But she is a shitty person, and of course none of us want to see shitty people get what they want; but stunt casting a controversial woman with the kind of narrative related to Barbra and Funny Girl that Lea has was the best financial call, because people will likely buy tickets just to see the drama... knowing that they will also see someone sing her ass off. The best way of avoiding this? Would've been casting a Broadway girl who could sing the role in the first place. I don't know that a post-scandal Lea could've played Fanny Brice... if not for Beanie being disastrously cast from the jump.

Anyway, when Ryan Murphy spins this in 10 years I will be READY AND WAITING.

Another bit to a Bruno/f!reader fanfic I'm fleshing out. Same reader as my last post. . Trying to work in more internal dialogue. Constructive criticism is always welcome!

First meetings! Reader is 22 and Bruno is 27. Reader works at a bookshop and volunteers at Encanto's theater. Also friends with Agustín, because why not?

There was no doubt about it. You were bored. You looked around the small bookshop. You had been so excited when you had finally started working here, but today had been extremely slow. It was well into the afternoon and only a few customers had stopped by all day. You skimmed through the pages of the book in your hand; a spicy bodice ripper. Not your favorite, but the genre was a guilty pleasure. The bell over the shop door rang as you quickly hid the book under the counter.

"Hola!" You cleared your throat, "¿Cómo puedo ayudarle?"

You turned to see your friend, Agustín, with another man trailing behind him. He smiled in surprise at seeing you behind the counter.

"Y/n! I didn't know you worked here!"

"Agustín! I just started last week. Señora Moreno finally agreed to let me help out around here." You hugged him tightly. "It's so good to see you!"

"Que bueno verte, mi hermana!" He spun you around and you got a better look at the man he was with.

He was of average height, though much shorter than Agustín with a messy mop of curls. His green-brown eyes looked at you quizzically. He almost looked familiar, but you couldn't quite place it.

"And who is this?" You asked your friend as you gestured to the mystery man.

"This is Bruno. Bruno Madrigal."

"Oh?" Your eyes lit up with recognition while Bruno's lit up with nerves. "¡Mucho gusta! Although, I think I've seen you around the shop before. There's tons of orders with your name on them."

"Oh. Y-yeah," he scratched the back of his neck, "This is one of my favorite shops, but I usually just keep my hood up and pay for my orders."

"I've heard a lot about you!" Both Bruno and Agustín stiffened up at your attempt to be cordial. True, you had heard rumors about his gift and the misfortunes townsfolk blame him for, but you didn't put much stock in them. "F-from Agustín, I mean." You tried to elaborate before changing the subject. "Spending time with your future brother-in-law today?" You ask, switching attention back to Agustín.

Bruno seemed to relax while Agustín's ears went pink. "Y/n! C'mon...We've only been seeing each other for a few months..."

"Ah yes," you teased, "Julieta! The wonderful older woman who stole your heart." You swooned dramatically.

"She's only four years older than me!" Agustín protested.

"¡Asaltacunas!" You put your hand over your heart over the fake scandal.

"You're Agustín's sister?"

You grinned, "Might as well be."

"She's my sister's best friend," he explained to Bruno, "and she's just as annoying."

"Oh you love it," you wrapped an arm around his neck pulling him closer, "Agustín and I go way back! We met at the playhouse when we were kids."

Bruno's eyebrows shot up. "Agustín? You never told me you were an actor." He said eagerly.

"I wasn't." Agustín mumbled.

"Verónica, his actual sister, and I were the actors. I still work with the children's program. But this guy? No," you chuckled, "he was too clumsy for backstage work and way too nervous to perform. He and his parents helped with costumes." You gave your friend a mischievous smile, "I remember this one time-"

Agustín cut you off, sputtering nervously, "Ok! Enough, I'm sure Bruno doesn't want to hear any embarrassing stories."

"I wouldn't mind actually." He quipped.

"No, no! We are here as customers today!" The taller man insisted.

"Well, in that case," you bowed dramatically, How may I serve you, señors?"

"Agustín is looking for a present for Julieta's birthday and I told him I would help."

"Aw, that's so sweet!" You clapped your hands together, finally ready to do some real work. "Ok, Gustino, what were you thinking?"

"Maybe a cookbook?" He looked over at Bruno for approval. "Y'know, with her gift and all?"

You led them over to a small bookcase. "We do have something new that she might like." You pulled the hand-binded book off a shelf and handed it to Agustilín to look through. "It's a set of recipes from all the old-timers in Encanto. And there's even room for Julieta to write her owns recipes too."

"That's perfect!" He said as he flipped through the pages. "She is going to love this!"

"What else does she like?" You asked.

"Huh?" Bruno looked at you oddly, while Agustín was still enraptured by the cookbook. It was as if he had never heard that question asked about his family. You were worried that you insulted him.

"I don't mean any disrespect," you waved your hands defensively, "It just...her gift is amazing obviously, but she has to have other interests too, right?"

"Oh of course!" Agustín gushed. "She loves singing, flowers, walks through town, her favorite color is azul..." He sighed.

"Ok, we've lost him." You teased. "Are you looking for a present too, Bruno?"

"She honestly does love cooking. I think she would love it even if it wasn't her gift." He admitted. "But, it would be nice to get her and Pepa a non-gift related gift, if you know what I mean?" He smiled softly. "They used to keep a diary. Actually, we all did. Mamá gave them to us to help with the mood swings of puberty." He let out a nervous laugh. "That's kind of lame though."

"I think that would be a great gift for your sisters! Nice and sentimental. We have journals over there." You pointed to the back corner of the store. Let me bag this torpe up and I'll be right back." You said as you made your way up to the register where Agustín was waiting.

"Thanks again, gordita." He said as you handed him the cookbook. "You finish up Bruno, I'm going to check a few other shops." Bruno nodded as Agustín turned back to you. "Still on for dinner with mi familia tomorrow?"

"I don't know," you teased. "Are you finally going to bring Julieta around?"

"You and Verónica will scare her off!"

"That's not a no!" You shot back.

"We'll see, we'll see. She's a busy woman after all! Adiós!"

And with that, you were left alone in the shop with Bruno Madrigal. The man everyone and their madre thought was a bad omen. Between what Agustín had told you and what you witnessed there in the shop, he just was just...a guy. A little skittish maybe, but certainly not the terrifying figure everyone made him out to be. He was still looking through journals as you made your way back over to him.

"So...See anything you like?" You asked.

He jumped, startled out of his concentration.

"Ah yep!" His eyes roamed quickly over you, as if he had forgotten you were there a moment ago. "I mean yes! I-i think these two will be nice." He handed you two journals, one blue and one yellow.

"Good color choices! They match their outfits."

"Thanks."

You check him out quickly as he fiddled with the ends of his ruana. The Madrigals always threw huge parties, but you had never gone. You weren't great with big crowds without a stage separating you. You wondered if he was the same way. He seemed polite and quiet. Not at all deserving of the way people talked.

"There you are," you handed him the small package and smiled. "It was nice to meet you Bruno. It's always good to put a face to a name."

"The feeling's mutual, y/n." He gave you toothy grin but then remembered himself. "Uh...I should probably get back to Agustín." He looked at you a moment longer, like he wanted to say something else, but instead blurted out, "Bye!" He went to leave, when a thought came to you.

"Bruno, wait!" You rushed over to the journals and grabbed the green one he had been eyeing for himself. You shoved it into his hands before you lost your nerve.

"¡Feliz cumpleaños!"

"What?"

"Well, it's your birthday too. You're triplets, aren't you?" He looked at you with disbelief and went to take it back, "It's silly," you mumbled as your cheeks began to tinge with a blush. You started rethinking being so forward with someone you just met.

"N-no, I mean, yes. Yes. We are triplets, but no it's not silly." He overexplained. "Thank you, he said softly, "but you really don't have to do this."

"Nonsense," you said, confidence restored. "You rarely come into town, so I probably wouldn't see you until after the celebration. Besides, can't split up a set, right?" He still looked hesitant. "Think of it as a 'buy two, get one free' special for one of our best customers."

He gave a small smile. "R-right, thank you again...are you sure you won't get in trouble?"

"Nah," you reassured him. "I'll take it out of my pay." With that he nodded and put all three journals into his satchel.

"It was nice meeting you, y/n."

"The pleasure was mine, Bruno. Come around more often! With as much as you order, I'm sure you have some great recommendations."

"I-i think I will." He was almost at the door when he crossed his fingers and turned back to you. "Hey y/n?" He asked in a small voice. "When do you get off work?"

You had already started tidying up and were only half paying attention, "Oh, I'm almost finished. Señora usually likes to close up." You said before the meaning behind his words hit you. "Bruno Madrigal! Are you asking me out?" You joked with him.

His eyes went wide. You immediately realized this was the wrong response to his question.. Bruno looked like he was going to melt into a puddle of nerves.

"W-what? No, no! I mean, not that I wouldn't- I mean, you're very pretty but-" He put his hand over his face to stop from babbling.

"Bruno, I-"

"Dios mios. This is going to sound pathetic coming from someone who's almost in their thirties, but...it just that no one's ever been this pleasant when they first meet me?"

"Bruno."

"You seem nice, and you're friends with Agustín already. Besides, mamá is always telling me to get out there and meet new people..."

"Bruno!"

He finally snapped out of his ramblings and looked at you with puppy-dog eyes. Worried that he scared you off. "Sorry, I-"

"You seem nice too. And I don't have many friends either, so I'd love to make a new one." You admitted. He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in.

"Meet me here in an hour or so? We could go get a café or something stronger if you're up for it." You suggested.

"That sounds amazing." He looked flabbergasted that you had actually agreed. "By the way, I'm a fan of the theater, I'd love to hear more about your work there."

"Oh? Sure, I'd be more than happy to." You beamed. "Have you ever auditioned?"

"No," he frowned, "I'd love to, but..." He pulled his hood over his face and wiggled his fingers, "I'm too busy with my terrifying visions of the future!"

You chuckled as you pulled down his hood. "Well, you don't seem too terrifying to me. In fact, I'd say you are leading man material."

"R-Really?"

"Or at least the plucky comedic relief, " you stuck your tongue out at him.

"Thanks." He deadpanned before both of you broke out into a laugh. "I really should go and find Agustín, but I'll see you soon?"

You nodded and he finally left the shop with a new spring in his step.
