I wanted to vent, but also ask an honest question. Since I was a teenager, I always wanted to work on character design. And one thing that always caught my attention was how I always preferred male character designs over female ones. My first thought was that I was always more into androgynous fashion and more masculine styles. But time passed and I came to the conclusion that it wasn't just that, and it seems that male characters can always be different things: fat, thin, handsome, ugly, short, tall, young, old, etc. and female characters, for the most part, fall into two categories: cute or sexy. I wanted some tips on how I can make female characters with more interesting designs, without having to fall into those two categories. I love your work and you managed to make someone else like the three musketeers <3<3

Hello ! That's definitely a good question and something I think about a lot. The bias towards beauty is very strong in character design and it takes a conscious effort to diversify output in that regard.

That sort of advice might be a bit obvious, but one habit I picked up from the director on my first feature film gig was to actually "cast" characters. Without reference, we tend to go for the kind of symmetrical face and "average" features mostly out of stylistic habit. I like to look at character actors with distinct faces (I like this pinterest page that has a lot of faces in one place) but also just acquaintances or pictures of random crowds.

When designing a character, at first I'm always building a big reference board trying to decide what Type of Guy (gender neutral) I'm going for, trying use photos rather than other people's art, because I want to rely on automatics and graphic symbols as little as possible. Whether I'm designing a man or a woman or other, I use references of fashion styles and people across the board in terms of gender so I keep the scope open. Sometimes a character ref board for me will be a picture of one of my aunts next to a bunch of screenshots of Columbo. In my experience, a lot of the times, it's mostly about going with styles and archetypes the same way you would for a male character, and switching it up somewhere along the way by looking at real women in your life and beyond as a grounding mechanism. Sometimes that will mean changing almost nothing, because the borders between genders and how you characterize them is blurry and fluid, and sometimes it will mean using features that are uniquely tied to some sort of female experience.

I enjoy realism and I think getting more proficient at it did help me diversify my designs (I find that more difficult to do with more minimalistic styles). Still, I am mostly a fantasy artist and in my case that comes with some amount of stylization and idealization of shapes and looks. I'm far from perfect in my biases and I'm not going out of my way to draw "ugly" characters because that doesn't mean much to me ; I try to draw inspiration from the faces of every day people and I associate it with my love for fashion. It's also worth noting the work I post here for fun is a lot more hash tag aesthetic than the stuff I do professionally where diversity is much more important.

I don't know if any of that is relevant but that's definitely an interesting topic ! I'd love to know others' perspective and tips on the matter.

I have a bit of a unique perspective on Luke if anyone's interested. I think he's one of those people who adapt to any environment they're in, which is great if you're an actor, but in your personal life you can just drift, going along with whatever the stronger personalities in your life are doing.

If anyone has observed male friendships closely, they might notice that they're very different from female ones - they're more surface level and more focused on not disrupting the status quo in the group. Where women will cheer each other on when one succeeds, men will unspokenly hold each other back (I'm not saying there isn't jealousy or toxicity in female friendships, it's just that it rises to the surface and either gets addressed or explodes the friendship).

I witnessed this dynamic in particular at uni, where guys who were suddenly doing very well in their studies because they'd found their niche felt the need to conform to wherever their buddies were at, especially if it was an established, long-time friend group from childhood or school. They'd go home over the holidays and come back a different person, like it was shameful to do well at something, especially if the guy in question wasn't the "alpha" of the group. Many guys who had potential to do well in our more academic field but moved back home post-uni ended up taking jobs that were beneath their ability because that was what their friends were doing or what was considered "cool" where they were from (think bartending, club promoting, etc.). I think this is precisely what Luke is trying to navigate with respect to his own friend group and why we're all so confused by his behavior.

Now, he has referred multiple times to how important friends are to him, how some have been there for him during hard times and how he's generous with them. He has always been a good looking guy, while maybe not everyone's cup of tea, and his styling on the show in S1&2 wasn't doing him any favors if we're being honest, and it's undeniable that he underwent a major transformation for S3. All of a sudden, he got this veritable onslaught of female attention and thirst that I'm assuming he hadn't experienced the likes of before. And this coupled with the season's success changed his status within the group and in the world at large. This is where the tension starts. He's trying to adapt to his new reality while everyone around him is expecting him to stay the same, not act like he's "better than them" now, even though he might be. In this situation, he has two options - to hold himself back and default to the proverbial average of the 5 people closest to him, or do a balancing act of "a rising tide lifts all boats" type of deal by sharing the fruits of his success with the group. I think that being the loving guy he is, he's caught in this liminal space of trying to find his personal footing while doing "right" by everyone around him. These are choppy waters for anyone to navigate, especially as his friends are themselves experiencing ups and downs and the collective context is ever-changing.

Do I think him dating someone like A is a choice that he thinks someone in his newfound position would make? Yes. Do I think she's probably a very nice girl and they're having a good time together? Sure. Do I think she's on his level? No. Do I think she'll be old news if he (or she) gets slammed with work? Most likely. It's ultimately their respective availability that's holding that relationship together. Well, that and the light ego stroke of dating a woman who looks a certain way - it's how he's projecting his new "league" out into the world. But also, if they were indeed introduced by a friend, he might perceive her as "approved" by those around him and thus not disruptive of the delicate pH balance of the group. I don't know anything about his friends and who they are or aren't dating, but rest assured that if the most dominant among them were to hit a life milestone like getting engaged or married, the rest of them would follow suit in quick succession so as not to disrupt group cohesion or their collective lifestyle, regardless of whether the person they happen to be with at the time is "the one". I've seen this play out so many times that it's a bit of a cliche.

Conversely, if one of them starts dating someone, let's say, of "higher status", we'd probably see that reflected across the friend group as well. All this is to say, I don't think A is end game and he knows it too, he's been straining to acknowledge her so as not to lose her but at the same time, I think deep down he knows she's just Ms. Right Now so he's not leaning into this as hard as he was with J. I think he's still subconsciously shopping around for the future Mrs. Newton but he's a relationship kind of guy and he's trying to ride this one out for as long as it'll hold. I think that if a semi-famous woman at a similar level of recognition as him showed an interest in him, A would become old news fast, especially if he manages to mentally integrate the changes that have happened in this life over time. I think she's a buffer for his anxiety to a large extent, which is why he takes her with him everywhere. Once he settles into more of a groove, we might start seeing a more recognizable version of him.

Just my two cents.

*****There are so many people in this fandom who assume that Luke launched the girl and that Nicola now launch JD. So let's dive into how a celebrity would launch a new relationship on social media. First there is what people consider a "soft launch" which would be hinting at your partner through photos. A example of a soft launch would be you post part of the person face with a caption showing love. Then there what is considered a "hard launch" where you would openly share pictures and tag them an example would be a cute couple photo which would be a tagged. But we do know that the celebrity world and our world just isn't the same. They launch in different ways. We as civilians don't have paparazzi hunting us waiting to catch us doing something.

Celebrities launch their relationships much differently than the average person, but they do soft or hard launch their relationship. Now Nic and Luke are not in the leagues of Jennifer, Aniston or Brad Pitt. But their fame has risen. A celebrity will launch their relationship through a few different ways. One of those ways is a post on their social media or on a red carpet event. And sometimes unfortunately through their teams due to a paparazzi photo. Now we aren't in elementary school anymore. Nobody's going to post saying this is my boyfriend. Sometimes the post is more subtle. It'll be a picture of them embracing with just a heart as a caption. Sometimes it's through their stories. Basically they're posting on their wall or their story this special and you will be able to find at least one post about them. Now into Nic carousel photos I seen some comments that people took the JD picture as a launch. That is not a hard launch nor a soft launch. She was highlighting her year and all the people that were a part of her year. She included him as a friend. There's nothing else to discuss. If he was launched he would have his own post. To add him to the group or photos isn't any type of launch. She is not setting him aside as a special person in her life that is what a launch is meant to do. By adding him to a group of friends photos she is showing her friends to the world. That what I took from the photo.

When a person launches a relationship through a red carpet event the couple actually walk the red carpet together. It's not Luke walking by himself on a red carpet. It's not a paparazzi photo where the man looks upset and actively straightened his fingers so that it's not appeared that he held her hand. When a man wants to launch a woman, he will grab her hand and walk with her. She will be his concern. And he's going to show her off. What we seen happen at pap gate wasn't in no way a launch that he wanted. Luke face spoke volumes. He wasn't expecting that what so ever. But even if you think he was behind it 🙄. He knows how to hold a woman hand. He knows how to walk with a woman. That wasn't any type of walk that we seen him do with a woman. Now paparazzi photo are photos that are taken and sold to the highest bidder. Most of the time these photos capture a kiss or intimate hug. Then the magazine who bought the photo then reaches out to the couple team for a comment. The couple will then have the teams confirm yes the couple is dating. This option of a launch happens more often than it should. These photos though like with Tom and Zendaya show no room for argument that they are together. You also have to keep in mind that photos tell a story but unless you see a before and after photo you can't tell that story. Your assuming based on a moment that was capture which in my opinion is just insanity. We all have opinions and that's great but to say without a shadow of a doubt that they are dating without the actors saying it is bananas. The first lesson I learned in college was that you can find all types of information on the internet but it doesn't mean that information is correct. I have seen so many people say that Nic launched JD and that Luke soft launched The girl. This information is incorrect. Launches happen because the celebrity wants to launch their love. They want to share that they met someone. A launch when done by the celebrity leaves no room for argument that this person is special to them. I can't say that this actual is what happened with Luke or Nic.

Since you’re in casting, I’d love to pick your brain a little about selecting actors. I love that Jared is a constantly rising star, but in the most loving way possible, he really isn’t the best actor. 80% of the time when I’m watching him, it feels like I’m watching someone acting. He’s not the most natural Versus someone whose performance I get lost in. That doesn’t mean I’m not going to watch everything he does, and it kind of seems standard for cable network TV (for example, I feel the same ways about Nathan Fillion, David Boreanaz, Matthew Daddario - but it doesn’t make me like them any less). Honestly, the only network TV show they didn’t make me feel that was is Hannibal, and even that was only the leading actors.

I would have assumed that acting ability would be the most important part, but your page has made me realize it’s more than that, and let’s be honest, Vampire Diaries wouldn’t haven’t gotten that far if acting was the most important skill set needed. I’m guessing for the Jared’s and David’s their entire history counts most, but what about for someone just getting hired - the Jared getting the Gilmore Girl’s role or the David getting the Angel role. If they’re acting seems…stiff (wrong word?) what makes a casting director say, ‘you know what, let’s give it to them anyway.’

It’s just such a hard world to break into and I’m guessing there are auditions from people with a little more natural talent, so what makes that final decision?

(Asking as someone who is about to start the audition process)

I think what Jared (and Nathan, David, etc) has doing for him is he acts from his authentic truth. I'll expand on it later in this post. With that said, Jared is a character actor trapped in a leading man role, it's why he's not the "best actor" because people tend to believe that good character actors disappear into their roles by diminishing their screen presence, which you can't do when you're a leading man. You may be picking up on this conflicting issue. Think of Brad Pitt who works best as a supporting actor (X), and struggles a bit as a leading man so he has to throw out nuances and reply more on his raw charisma.

I haven't seen Gilmore Girls but I read Jared was the 2nd or 3rd Dean. Dean was recast because the OG Deans' chemistry with Rory wasn't up to snuff. So that answer your "final decision" question, which is chemistry. David Boreanaz had good chemistry with Sarah Michelle Geller. His chemistry Emily Deschanel in Bones was fine, bordering on good, but it was more fun/odd couple vibe whereas his interaction with Michelle had depth. Whenever Jared and Jensen tell their chemistry audition story in front of the producers, I'm pretty sure they're leaving out that Jared likely had chemistry auditions with other various Dean actors.

My advice on auditions is walk into that room like you’re going to solve their problem. 

Most casting directors talk about wanting auditioning actors to "make bold choices" because they believe it will get in touch with their authentic self and therefore, make them a captivating performer. My advice is adjust the text to your authentic emotion so that you're reacting to the events of the story from your internal truth. It doesn’t matter if the story is a sci-fi, comedy, or a period piece drama: if we don’t believe the actors, we won’t care what happens to them in the story. The audience is an incredible lie-detector: the average person has, for their entire life, been storing countless passive data on how normal people react to various situations, so you can’t fool them.  

My CD used to say that it's easier to tell the truth on camera than it is to lie because once you believe in yourself, then you're not acting anymore. I don't 100% agree with her but that seems to be what most CDs think.

The more confidently you use yourself as a canvas and let the context of the scene speak through your own emotional repertoire and point of view, the more compelling and interesting you are to watch. The most interesting or captivating actor is the one whose next movement, facial expression, or line reading is unpredictable. That's the difference between Jeff Bridges (unpredictable) and Beu Bridges (reliable).

The BoBs really think Ryan confirmed their ship is happening because he said "whatever happens happens" and he didn't outright say it wouldn't happen. Uhm he did say that in his "Eddie is a heterosexual man, Buck's straight friend that he came out to, and it's so nice that a straight man and a bi man can be friends" interview and y'all didn't believe him. Not to mention JLH telling them it wasn't going to happen, and then backtracking when the BoBs went crazy.

But we're the deluded ones for shipping bucktommy after just three episodes and Tommy being a plot device (apparently).

Well. People are free to think what they want, obviously. I don't even see much of what the BoBs are saying, only what is shared in the buck/tommy tags because I value my peace way too much to go look into the chaos.

"Whatever happens happens" means "you don't get to decide". Also how do they know that it's not Ryan who said no eventually?

They're angry because they now realize their fantasy won't become canon and like a bunch of toddlers who realize they won't have the toy they thought they would get, they throw a temper tantrum. And I can understand the disappointment. But not the reaction. Not the violence in their posts. There's no love for the show there, for the creative minds, for the effort of representation, for the people who work hard to make it happen. They're not fans. They just saw two cute men and projected their fantasies on them, whatever the story or the character development.

Yes, some choices don't make much sense in canon, I even myself would have enjoyed to see Eddie and Buck together at the beginning. It would have been cute, with Christopher loving them both so much too. But that's not what happened and they definitely wrote them in a way that doesn't leave any doubt if you don't try to read so hard between lines that don't even exist. People need to accept a story for what it is, and if they don't like it, they can live in complete denial of it. There's no shame in that but do it with respect. Your fantasy is yours.

The hate against Tommy is also their problem. They can hate him all they want but they twist everything about him to fit their hateful narrative. Queer characters deserve respect. Well, most of them, a queer pos is still a pos. But Tommy has been brought back into the show and written with respect for the character, for the story and for his purpose: being Buck's new romance. Not only he already existed in the show but also has history with the 118 and has a significant shared story with Hen and Chim. He's already a characters in itself, he just came back.

Having a character like Tommy is also more than just a interesting character. It's a necessary character. He fits the cishet macho mold so perfectly: veteran, pilot, firefighter, buff, confident, professional, brave. But he's GAY AF. And everything he does is respectful and kind. And haters have to rely on lying to show him in a bad light because so far, there's nothing. Imagine what this kind of character looks like for the average audience? It's great representation for us queer.

In the end, BoBs can hate all they want, Buck and Tommy together is canon, Tommy has only shown positive traits so far, he's shown sane boundaries and respect for other's. When haters have to rely on details, and still twist them, to justify their hate, you know they know they're wrong. They know, but they can't give up now that they've reach this level of hate.

All I would ask of them would be to stop the hate against real life people and stop pulling them into the drama (the live with JLH was NO THAT. Shame on them). Let the fandom be at war between ships if you need that to feel something but leave real people out of that, especially actors and Lou in particular. They're paid to play and this is not a service. You're not a client they have to satisfy because you paid for a specific performance. The bullying and entitlement need to stop.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY HTTYD FANDOM! | HTTYD TALKS | DRAWING PARALLELS

Can you imagine? It's has been 13 years since the world of Berk and the archipelago opened up to us. Since we entered this crazy, viking village 12 degrees north from hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death.

I reckon the HTTYD anniversaries might kick off a little differently for fans all over the globe depending on its opening, because DreamWorks commemorated the HTTYD's 13 years on the 22nd of March on Instagram, though I distinctly remember it opening where I was on the 27th because it was also my birthday and I wanted to watch a movie.

Which means, yes, guys, I'm turning 24 today! HAHA! To mark this double celebration, I thought of doing something fun and a little different from my usual posts just to get the ball rolling. So, question, have you guys ever watched She's Out of My League?

She's Out of My League is a Jay Baruchel movie. A rom-com produced by Paramount Pictures AND (wait for it...) DreamWorks Pictures. It was released in March 2010 which meant that our Hiccup-voice-actor here had two movies playing at the cinema simultaneously.

I remembered that I wasn't allowed to watch the movie, but my older brother (10 years older than me) snuck me into the theatres to watch. I remember him covering my eyes for a bit and not understanding a lot of the humour back then, but I did remember the premise, so here goes...

Premise:

Kirk (Jay Baruchel) is your everyday, average Joe. Coupled w the fact that he is somewhat a pushover and insidiously insecure, he tries to get back with his manipulative ex-girlfriend Marni. After that failed, he stumbles onto the path of the beautiful Molly, who by beauty standards, personality and life-style choices is considered a hard 10, while he is rated a mere 5.

When Molly seems to take an interest in Kirk, the whole world is put out of balance and their friends smell impending doom by virtue of their different "social ratings." However, are these standards real, or just a social construct that needs debunking?

I'm not here to criticise the movie. I'm sure we all have our thoughts. Nor am I saying that this movie or the romantic storyline holds a candle to the HTTYD franchise or Hiccstrid, but, it was hilarious to discover a number of parallels between these two worlds.

THE CHARACTERS

Kirk Kettner (Jay Baruchel) - The awkward underdog, highly underestimated by everyone including himself and doesn't see that he is, in fact, more than his make.

Molly (Alice Eve) - The beautiful, blonde and determined love interest. Lawyer turned successful events planner. Independent, fiercely confident and a real go-getter.

Devon (Nate Torrence) - The nicer friend in Kirk's friend group. An adorable, huggable sweetie pie who still believes in magic and romance.

Dylan (Kyle Bornheimer) - The guy you'd love to hate. He is Kirk's overbearing older brother who bullies Kirk to mask his own insecurities.

Stainer (T.J. Miller) - The quick talking, witty side-kick whose crazy ideas propels the storyline into an absurd direction. Who is actually, also Tuffnut.

Katie (Kim Shaw) - Molly's younger, dimwitted sister who is just getting by.

Patty (Krysten Ritter) - Molly's best friend and business partner. Strong-willed, independent and fiercely loyal.

THEME, MESSAGE & STORYLINE

(1) IT ISN'T ABOUT HOW YOU LOOK LIKE, BUT WHO YOU ARE ON THE INSIDE

It's a cliche to say, beauty is from within. But it doesn't make it less true. I think what makes Molly attractive is because she is a really nice person, adaptable. Her beauty is an aspect of it. Imagine if Molly had Marni's personality. The story would've turned differently.

This is also Kirk's selling point. The pinnacle of his entire personality is the nice guy card, it's what attracts Molly.

Likewise w Hiccup, he is a genuinely good guy. You can't fault him for his courtesy. Though Kirk's personality seems more like a caricature of Hiccup's, ironically. And, Hiccup's strength and leadership is not something you'd notice on his person but in him.

(2) YOU NEED TO BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOURSELF

I loved Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Man [Episode 8, Season 1 (Riders of Berk)] for many reasons, but mainly because it was the episode Hiccup proves to himself that he is worthy.

She's Out of My League was a movie about Kirk learning that he is worthy. That he isn't just a five, that this whole rating system is nonsense. He was always good enough for Molly, he was never good enough for himself.

He ends up flying a plane, which is a life long dream of his, he dreamt of becoming a pilot. And well, we all know that if Hiccup existed today, and was a real person, he would've been a pilot too. Maybe in the AirForce, on a jet black plane named Toothless.

Kirk and Molly have roughly the same hair colour as Hiccup and Astrid. My favourite scenes in She's Out of My League are the romantic montages of them going out. This is one of my favourite shots from the show:

I'm not recommending you guys watch this show by the way. If you haven't that is. If you're not used to this type of adult-comedy, you might not like it. The pacing is a little choppy, and it does slap you w many cringy moments. But sometimes, its just so ridiculously hopeless you can't help but laugh.

I don't remember if the show did well, but its not a bad movie (to me). It was underrated for what it was trying to accomplish, but it could definitely do w some refining . Like, I would've loved it if they developed the characters and the romance more.

But at the time the movie was released, I think a lot of people related to Kirk. The whole, "on a scale of 1 to 10" thing has messed w a lot of confidences.

As a teenager, I reckon that's more of a problem. I remember that popular girls in school were always pretty and the hot guys were always good looking. And well, it's hard to not believe that looks don't play a part.

But, once I grew out of it, I honestly found those attributes to come in second to many other qualities of a person. Looks just happen to be a bonus. Hahaha, look at me, a day older and already issuing unsolicited advice.

Episode 38: Happy Endings

This Hilbert and Doug morality debate is funny because it's literally one actor debating with himself.

I'm sad Hera can't be a part of the group.

"2am"? How is it 2am? You're...you're not on earth. I understand keeping up with a schedule, but it's still a little weird, what time zone are they following?

The way Hilbert talks about Sam... it's like he has this shred of humanity left inside him that he's just gotten used to ignoring.

And Hilbert, I have a clear answer to your little "trolley problem": the decima virus is CUTTER'S property. He put that in your contract, or have you forgotten? Do you seriously think that man will be using it for the good of humanity? Because I don't.

I also feel like the "No one gets a happy ending/ there are no happy endings" think is foreshadowing. But I hope I am wrong.

But I suppose I should expect nothing else from the man who ordered the killing of three people on Christmas. Makes you wonder what Cutter has against holidays. Did mommy and daddy not give someone enough presents?

What does Cutter want with his brain? An old friend made this for him?? Is it the dude he killed or is it the Pryce person he wrote the book with? Makes me wonder where his mysterious friend is hiding. In the shadows at Cutter's right hand or six feet underground with a knife in the back? Not sure which is worse. I guess we'll see.

THEY CAN SCAN HIS BRAIN AND GET THAT KIND OF INFO? That...but...I...as someone who knows slightly more than average about how the brain works, Cutter needs to learn how to make better use of his tech. I cannot even BEGIN to tell you how much better his evil plans would go, if he focused on THAT instead of...oh I don't know...investing his money into elaborate dark rooms with evil dentist chairs and slow clap videos?

Also "Hera can't detect these secret rooms" HOW. HOW CAN SHE NOT THAT'S AN AWFUL IDEA: She flies the ship, she has to calculate for its size. It's science fiction, so let me be 100% clear, I'm not dumping on the creators or writers, I'm dumping on Cutter the character. You idiot.

I hate him. I hate him so much. Cutter is the worst. I hope HE loses his senses. Almost all his senses. Except for pain. That's the only one he deserves to keep.

I hope Maxwell can save Hera. She has to! Hera can't die now. We already went through that, and she deserves to be happy.

But I do get the feeling that might not happen. For anyone.

You know, as I go back and edit this, I gotta say, in some ways Kepler is like an evil version of Doug. They both clearly like alcohol and substances (Kepler's "I like the feel of it in my hand" and Doug's "I just want to hold the cigarette"), but Doug wants to get better while Kepler clearly doesn't. "You're like this Whiskey see? I'd be sad without it but I'd be okay." And then he risks the life of his crew for it. You sure you don't have a bit of problem Whiskey boy? 👀

it's a weird place to fall where I always end up falling in the writers/creators weren't intending to go anywhere with x and/or they didn't intend what's there. and I have to reconcile that with them being the same people who put all of that stuff there in the first place

I know gaslit gets thrown around willy nilly these days but sometimes I do feel crazy haha when a tptb says they weren't even doing or considering something or don't see something a particular way, when...how do you do things like that accidentally? when scenes and lines are deliberately written and included and actors have acted and edits have highlighted.

it's like, 'what they've done is genius and emotionally compelling and all that's there is what they've created. no I don't trust them to continue this because when they speak they deny knowledge of the thing they've created itself and appear to have no understanding or care for it at all.'

they're the reason and creator of the thing I appreciate so much, and yet having no faith in them handling it. they handled it to be what it is and what I care for, but having no trust in them.

this isn't even about anything specific because I feel like it happens so much haha

but seriously the one thing I actually thought for sure this wasn't going to happen with was royjamiekeeley. and then it did, so hard! how do you develop something so beautifully, so perfectly, making sure all the pieces fit just right at just the right time...only to then claim you had no intention of it at all? it's baffling! and kind of just leaves you feeling a little hollow haha

Sorry for taking so long to answer this, I've been so busy and tired this week.

I understand what you're saying. And I think it's also the fact that those of us who are in fandom, and who really engage with the source material on a completely different level than the average audience helps to blur the line between what the creators intended and what we interpret. Because it might not be a huge thing to the creators, it might be something that is easy to miss. If you're not spending hours upon hours looking for these specific things to confirm your headcanons and or theories, you know. But at the same time I made a post a while ago where I said that a lot of, mainly the straight audience, don't pick up on things that has to do with queerness. Which was clearly shown with fans of Ted Lasso when SO many people were surprised that Trent, Keeley and Colin are all queer. Despite the fact that the queer audience have been talking about them being queer since basically season 1.

It's a tricky situation with the whole "what did they intend, did something happen on the way, or did they not realise what they were putting out there". It's also difficult to know if they were stopped, if they intended to go somewhere but they were stopped by something or someone along the way. And then they won't be able to talk about it and they deny everything instead. That it was never their intention to imply whatever it is we as the audience saw, you know.

Now, I never thought that they'd make Ted/Trent canon, I loved writing meta about it. Had a lot of fun with it, and I do believe that if they wanted to go there they could easily do it with what's already been established by the show. The same goes with Ted being bi. I more or less headcanon all characters I like as bi until proved otherwise, with some exceptions, Trent for example was always gay in my mind (except if they say they are straight, sorry not sorry, bi realisation it is!) And I think that they've opened the door for that to be the next thing Ted has to deal with in his personal life. What I did think was that Trent had romantic feelings for Ted, which James Lance confirmed, thank you James! Which again is something that James put into his acting choices, and that we picked up on. That was 100% intentional.

As for Roy/Jamie/Keeley… I never really thought that they would have them all be together, I thought that would be too out there for the show. And I definitely don't pick up any romantic feelings between Roy and Jamie, sorry about that to those who ship them. I wouldn't have hated it, but I wasn't invested in it. But I do have to say that I hated what they did with them as characters, Roy and Jamie fighting over Keeley and then the weird "you get to choose" thing. Like who the fuck are you??? Season one Roy and Jamie doing something like that… sure, okay, it would still have been weird but I could maybe see it happening. Season three Roy and Jamie, absolutely not! I think it was supposed to be kind of funny but it just wasn't, it was insulting to all three of them and the progress they'd made.

It's Beautiful Now Lee Hyun-jae appreciation post

I'm writing this down way before the series final episode. I'm not even half way through so before there's some major plot twist (who knows if something might go wrong) I decided to write a few nice things about Lee Hyun-jae. There were moments of me being low-key angry at this character for a couple of reasons, but ... I won't be mentioning those reasons now, since those are minor. Plus he redeemed himself on time. He's a good one. This is all about his good sides and me idolising the sh out Hyun-jae. I think he deserves this afterall. Plus, it's fun.

It's some sports drink, no worries. Just imagine having a person like this in your life, ok? It's going to be good for your mental health. Let's go (⁠◠⁠‿⁠・⁠)⁠—⁠☆

Hyun-jae is first introduced as a highly professional lawyer. He works at his colleague's law firm and together they make a successful business duo. At job, he makes sure his clients are well taken care of and that they receive enough respect from his side, never crossing the line. His social skills are advanced and he reads people like they're an open book. Not only that, but he also successfully juggles between his three main roles: witted son/brother, serious lawyer and supportive boyfriend. Throughout many problematic situations we see him adapting quickly and responding in intelligent manner while being considerate and empathic. He has a special talent of getting the best out of people around him. And I'm here for it all the way.

He enjoys keeping his apartment sterile clean and his health in check, but also cooks way better than an average ajumma. If you ask nicely, there's nothing he wouldn't do for you (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠)

Then there's this other side to him. Writers spiced him up a bit before deciding which turn to take, which made him realistic for a brief moment. It takes some time before they show it to us, way more than for any other character. He's goofy. Witty. Easy-going. Honest. Straightforward. Extroverted. Emotionally developed. Like really well developed. This is how you know he's the only character writers had to make up as opposed to others who are so realistic it gets annoying quite often.

(skip this if you don't want to read about the actor) Also, one thing that is so important, but regarding the actor who plays Hyun-jae, this is already 2nd drama I watched where this actor plays very similar characters (first one being Hit the Top/The Best Hit), which I wasn't expecting at all. Even both characters have same names lol! I guess he sealed his career with his role choices, just like some actors are doomed to play villains. So, now I really want to watch his other dramas as well, just for this kind/good/playful energy this actor brings to life in characters he plays. And I already saw someone else mentioning this exact same thing here on tumblr, I'm not sure which drama it was about, but they mentioned this same character energy and then figuring out way later it's the same actor in both series. It's Yoon Shi-yoon. And I totally get why people like him so much. It's not so difficult to identify the characters he plays with his own personality, when he keeps playing the same role again and again. That seems like awfully a lot of pressure if I may add, no matter how ideal it may sound at first. But let's get back to Hyun-jae. Moving on.

This scene was heartwarming, honestly. Let me melt in his problem-solving energy for a while. Like, yes. I love this type of people. So much.

It seems Hyun-jae enjoys being the active one in a relationship, being the leader and provider. He takes the initiative while considering his partner's preferences. It's a bit difficult to stay indifferent to that. He doesn't stop being this ideal man just like that. He also kows his way around overly protective 2 meters tall brothers and doesn't let a perfectly healthy power struggle hurt his ego.

Oh and I never mentioned his relationship with driving.

Girls, if he doesn't act like Hyun-jae while driving, run! Honestly. Just run. That's the bare minimum. Driving style is a great indicator of a character. Especially if you ask him not to do something.

He's normal about driving. Almost as if he's written by a woman. First thing is he never drives when drinking (and he doesn't even drink much in general), second, he's calm while driving, and third, he listens to music while driving. Find me a guy who can do all three, I dare you. Also, he helps his girlfriend overcome her fear of driving. His fictional gf is lucky, lucky.

At first I thought Mirae and Hyun-jae are a bad match, but as the show goes on, they seem complementary to each other.

Men apologizing? I'm sorry, let me just.. (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠) ..... Anyways, I really started to enjoy their dynamics, his patience towards her and her persistence to let go of angst. It's lovely to watch their progress. And lack of hot and cold behaviour. Yes. Give me that reassurance. Fix my attachment issues. Kamsahamnida🫰🏻

Other than that, be ready for some cute surprises. He prepares his delicious specialties for people he cares about. He casually serenades his girlfriend and gives her surprise visits before going to work. Also, if for any reason he needs to keep someone's secret, he'll actually do it. Efficiently.

Eomoni, I would, gladly, and every other girl probably. His mom is harsh because he's the middle child, 2nd oldest who isn't married yet, so it only makes sense, but she's such a sweetheart to her family.

Besides practicing assertiveness, he's pretty good at avoiding unnecessary family drama in a smart way. He makes it look so easy. Somehow he always stays true to his moral compass, plus if everything I mentioned before didn't already imply it, he is competent enough to take care of himself and is enjoying his independence. Where does this list stop? It doesn't, that's why non existent guys are the best. They act grown up, responsible and they're the whole package, a whole lot like all in 1 dishwasher tabs.

Nature's best anxiolytic in a human form. Well, he's as fictional as it gets and makes you wish you were too. At this point I'm not sure if I'd rather date him or be him.

If something changes about this character by the end of the show, then, oops. For now let's leave it as it is, hopefully he stays smart. With the power of Pluto, I summon more people like this one into all of our lives. (⁠◠⁠‿⁠・⁠)⁠—⁠☆

P.S. as I'm typing this Hyun-jae and Mirae are going on a double date/camp trip with Mr.Dolt and Hae-jun noona. As lovely and fun as it seems, that only means one thing. Season of bawling my eyes out is ahead. Bring it on Korea (⁠╥⁠﹏⁠╥⁠)

You were very nervous, everyone could tell, this wasn't your first interview about a movie obviously, but it was your first one appearing on The Tonight Show, you already knew Jimmy from some party at your old production company but you knew that the show was very famous and that people used to take thousands of clips to upload to other platforms, As you sat there your legs were shaking enough to be noticed by your co-star, who was none other than Hayden Christensen himself, who happened to be your love interest in the movie you were both sponsoring. In the movie you and Hayden had filmed a few scenes together and both of you had caught feelings for each other, but neither of you had said anything out loud.

"y/n honey, your legs are shaking, do you want us to stop the questions for a moment?" Jimmy asked with concern in his voice, "no no easy, I'm fine I'm just a little nervous" you laughed softly.

Hayden placed his hand on your knee "are you sure you don't want to stop? you're shaking so much" your head was going a mile a minute, your head just focused on Hayden's hand on your leg, your eyes connected with his "relax, I'm really fine, we can go on" you gently placed your hand on Hayden's hand on your knee, giving him a warm smile. "let's get back to the questions, there are a lot of rumors about you two" you and Hayden were surprised at the statement, "I didn't expect that one" Hayden laughed as he scratched his neck, "the fans of the movie have made a compilation of all the scenes where said tension between you two appears, should we play it?" Jimmy commented with a smile, the public went feral after Jimmy said that. From one moment to the next all the videos began to appear on the set screen, by the time the broadcast was over your cheeks were redder than Darth Vader's lightsaber.

After that embarrassing moment Hayden's hands were looking for any excuse to touch or brush you, your eyes never left his at any moment while he was talking, the few winks he threw at you and the icing on the cake was how he put his hand on your lower back to leave the set.

During that interview,and days after, all the social networks started creating rumors about you two, posting pictures from off stage or when you both were walking down the street, the fans went crazy when months later you both confirmed your relationship on Jimmy's show, he started laughing and saying "I knew it, I knew it!" all over the set while laughing while you and Hayden were laughing and holding hands.

I don't even think it's so much that Tom is way more affected by it than Z, I just think that Tom is more vocal about it? 🤷

Z herself has stopped posting personal things to her sm accounts for years... Idk if you've noticed. It's just kind of rare that she does now days. She used to post (Especially on SnapChat lol) ALL the time... the WHOLE DAY in fact! 😅🤣 While I do miss those days and glimpses into her personal life, I can totally understand why she stopped doing it. Not only is she trying to be seen as a more "serious actress", but she is also a grown woman now, AND, she probably realized that fans were getting a little TOO much of her private life and it wasn't healthy. 😔

I think that the more followers she got, the less "safe" she felt posting certain things online. Just my theory. I have a workmate who reminds me a lot of him.

She is into the same things as he is. I almost envy her. She studies wine, likes art , collects sneakers, and grew up in the 90's with the "old school" hiphop influence.

I agree with your friend. His work and artistry is targeted the wrong audience completely and this is why he wanted out of YG entertainment among other reasons. He is on good terms with them and works with them still but could have did so much more and rose in the ranks if he applied himself. Hes not a risk taker by intention he's a risk taker unintentionally with the mistakes he makes minus risks in his creative direction i.e doom dada. He should have went independent and left the company & group altogether after Tazza was released then either venture into America for tours marketed to a certain crowd or festivals that is not for the average mainstream community. It's been clear TOP is probably angry and disappointed inside that minus his love for the group, his music will never be directly consumed and understood the way niche persons like your friend or us understand it.

Tell your friend he fails to understand that all of these gripes because he himself is trying to overcome mental health issues and stress on top of depression. So it isn't 100% apparent to him that the average fans won't get his message cause he himself is very youthful at heart, the group has always said he's a like a grown kid and the most sensitive despite being the oldest.

I just...idk. Sometimes in life you have to know when to walk away from things cause time is everything and timing matters. If the rock would have stayed in WWE for like 3 more years or 5 more he wouldn't be what he is and John Cena as a result wouldn't be what he is cause they wouldn't have had a big need for a replacement star in WWE minus Stone Cold leaving. Just an example. You have to know when to stay and when to leave. I get the sense TOP wasn't physically ready or believed he was fully capable of making it on his own fully without a management company i.e YG and the GROUP as back up. Just my theory and opinion. And YES! his comments are always flooded with redundant mind numbing love spam, foreign fans who are blissfully clueless and sharing love (nothing wrong with that at all) and just a lot of praise or some occasional questions. At some point although I'm glad he has love it looks like a robot spam. It looks like legions of repeating statements and spam with no real thought process behind it. Look at American stars comments. Sure its messy but you'll find love in it and varying opinions, some criticisms, some love with shade peppered in and maybe some fans wars with a troll or shady person. It's a lot of variety in the posts then with people like Beyonce it's similar to TOP but you can still sense a flow of realistic comments and the genuine care from her fans.

I believe TOP clearly sees this and he feels numb to it. Like he appreciates it on surface level but it means nothing to him overall. Which is why he can easily respond to hate comments or comments he doesn't like quicker than love comments he NEVER Acknowledges. I've seen in the past during the first years of him joining that he would reply to a random comment of fans but now he doesn't really do. It's to people he knows like most celebs. He treats his most valuable resource aka his fans poorly but the fans will never see this. They never will and it's sad.

Too much adoration especially if it's done in this way can be harmful cause its not offering a concrete genuine support. He just sees another flood of the same old same old.

And as for the Lynnkmm situation she's a wealth off girl he met through connections. Nothing more or less. A lot of guys in the industry American and overseas do this. Date hollow girls who are beneath them especially mentally cause it keeps them in control, keeps them in the lead, they don't have to think or bend much, it serves them and if TOP dated a woman his age in his league it would be too much for him. He would have to really be present and take accountability and be on better behavior. Younger girls will and can give guys like TOP hell especially due to immaturity or brattiness but it's a smoother ride with them plus it's easier to transition through break ups with them emotionally to some degree.

Its a lot I can't sum up into 1 explanation. It's no different than Leo DiCaprio or Zac Efron dating girls like that. And with TOP of course he's dating girls who drop everything for him or pretend to take on his lifestyle. Women on his level 9 times out of 10 won't do that. Only seasoned athletes manage this well (not the cheaters*) Singers and Actors don't manage this well.

Eventually we'll probably hear of him dating some actress or woman in the higher arts industry in the future. But that's it.

Yeah there's really no fake it till you make it so to speak on Broadway? Singing, acting and dancing 8 shows a weeks for months is brutal and requires a lot more skit and talent then most work in show business. That's why when it comes to theater even the decent, nothing special performers are still a lot more talented then your average singer or actor. I'm not too familiar with Beanie's work, from the previews that were posted she can sing, she's not bad. But being able to sing like that, in a show like Funny Girl which is extremley difficult, on a consistent basis? Just being an good singer is not enough.

Honestly, having listened to those previews and bootlegs I think that "good" is generous. Maybe community theater good. But then again, we're both hearing snippets--maybe she's better beyond that, but based on the amount of time she's supposed to work and the strain that would cause... I doubt it.

I'm honestly not here for the "poor Beanie" sympathy act people are putting on. Regardless of who was going to replace her, I think this entire thing is a bad look for her. She's never impressed me as an actress (I thought she was actually quite bad in Impeachment and made a woman who was undeniably in a very sad position come off as annoying). I find it pretty demeaning that people basically say "give her a pass, she's fat". Beanie's weight should never be mocked or made fun of, but it also doesn't mean that she deserves a role more than a skinny person who's more talented than her, ya know?

The reality is that Beanie got the role because the show was built around her--likely because her connections financially boosted it. There are much more talented Jewish actresses (and, I imagine, fat and queer Jewish actresses) who could have done this role. She got the role not because she worked as hard as the vast majority of girls on the come up in theater, but because she was connected. She didn't have the voice necessary for this role. I don't know if any amount of training could've forced that--but I have heard that she didn't train as much as some would've liked, and tbh? The fact that she's missed somewhere around 40 shows makes me feel like that's true. COVID is of course one thing, but I tend to feel like she just wasn't liking the reviews she was getting. And she shouldn't have.

The reality is that getting bad reviews isn't being bullied. Many performers have received worse and have gone on with the show until it closed. Beanie couldn't hack it, and regardless of who was going to replace her I'd be glad to see her replaced because like... I won't pretend to be a Broadway expert but I do love it, and I also won't pretend that Beanie is the only person on Broadway who's benefited from nepotism... Benefiting from nepotism doesn't even make me dislike you--if you can follow the nepotism with talent.

She couldn't. I don't feel bad for her. You're right--being a good singer isn't enough for Funny Girl. She'll be fine. As a former prime minister recently said, them's the breaks.

I just honestly wish that someone who was genuinely able to single this role had been cast from the start, ya know? I've heard her understudy sing--she sounds really good! If she'd been it from the beginning, presented as "the next big thing"... Maybe the show could've done well. Because Beanie was so poorly reviewed and the buzz began about her constantly calling out, ticket sales dropped. So they have to turn around an expensive show that's flopping, which means stunt casting Lea Michele.

Like, don't get me wrong--I hate Lea as a person. She's talented as hell; I don't have to like you to be fair. And she will most likely bring the house down with those songs. But she is a shitty person, and of course none of us want to see shitty people get what they want; but stunt casting a controversial woman with the kind of narrative related to Barbra and Funny Girl that Lea has was the best financial call, because people will likely buy tickets just to see the drama... knowing that they will also see someone sing her ass off. The best way of avoiding this? Would've been casting a Broadway girl who could sing the role in the first place. I don't know that a post-scandal Lea could've played Fanny Brice... if not for Beanie being disastrously cast from the jump.
