Cora's younger sister, Rose, has been living at the factory too. Aaaaaand it turns out, having a few extra pairs of helping hands around isn't a bad thing, even if they do come along with an unsolicited opinion or two.
After all, there's plenty of work to do around the factory these days. Dawson's foray into herbalism has grown into an established business, with his ointments and salves in hot demand for treating the community's aches and pains.
Most recently, Dawson has expanded into fermenting kombucha, ciders, and herbal tonics, and they've also recently procured a dairy cow, Gertrude.

omg baby devil asking the devil boys and matt to open an orange for her
Tumblr media
The Orange Test 🍊
Y/N sat on the couch, phone propped up, barely able to hide her grin. “Alright, let’s see how the boys react when I ask them to open an orange for me.”
She had seen this trend all over TikTok—the “orange test” to see how guys would react to a simple request. And what better way to try it than with the most chaotic group of hockey players she knew?
She grabbed an orange and turned to her first victim.
~~
Jack Hughes
“Jack,” she called sweetly, holding out the orange. “Can you open this for me?”
Jack turned his head, immediately squinting at her in suspicion. “Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“Do your hands not work? Did something happen? Blink twice if you’re being held hostage.”
“Jack.”
“Y/N.”
She rolled her eyes. “Just open it.”
He sighed dramatically, flopping onto the couch like she had just asked him to carry her up a mountain. “I swear, I do everything for you. You’re so needy. What would you do without me?”
“Live peacefully.”
Jack peeled the orange aggressively, muttering under his breath the entire time. “I play in the NHL, and this is what my life has come to. Peeling oranges like I’m a damn personal chef—”
Once it was open, he held it out to her with an exaggerated flourish. “Your highness, your peeled fruit.”
Y/N took it with a smirk. “Thanks, Jacky.”
He groaned. “I take it back. Next time, starve.”
~~
Luke Hughes
She turned to Luke next, holding out the orange. “Lukey, can you open this for me?”
Luke blinked at her. “Why?”
“Because I asked.”
He stared for a few seconds like he was processing the request, then shrugged and took the orange. Without another word, he started peeling it like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“You’re not even gonna question it?” Y/N asked, surprised.
Luke flicked a piece of peel at her. “Nah. Too much effort.”
She snorted. “Appreciate it, Lukey.”
Luke handed her the orange with a nod. “Anytime, I guess?”
~~
Nico Hischier
“Nico, can you open this for me?”
Nico took the orange but immediately looked at her like she had just asked him to solve a math equation. “Why?”
“I just can’t do it.”
“Why not?”
“I just can’t.”
Nico frowned. “Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Then why can’t you do it?”
She huffed. “Nico, just open it.”
He sighed, peeling the orange efficiently but still watching her like she was a puzzle he needed to solve. “You’re sure you’re okay?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not injured? You’re not hiding something?”
“Nico,” she deadpanned.
He handed her the orange but kept his captain face on. “If you need help with something, you know you can tell me, right?”
She melted a little. “I know, Neeks. This is just a TikTok trend.”
He rolled his eyes but ruffled her hair before walking away. “Unbelievable.”
~~
Dawson Mercer
“Daws, can you open this?”
“Yeah, of course,” Dawson said easily, taking the orange.
Y/N sat back, waiting.
Dawson… just sat there.
Holding the orange.
Not peeling it.
A full minute passed.
She waved a hand. “Dawson?”
“What?”
“The orange?”
“Oh. Yeah. One sec.”
Another minute passed.
Y/N sighed. “Dawson, you literally said yes. Why aren’t you doing it?”
Dawson grinned. “I forgot.”
She smacked his arm. “How did you forget? It’s in your hand!”
Dawson just laughed, tossing the orange in the air. “I’ll get to it eventually.”
~~
Matt Rempe
Then came Matt.
She held the orange out to him. “Matt, can you open this for me?”
Matt didn’t question her. No hesitation, no teasing. He simply reached out, took the orange gently, and began peeling it with the most focused expression she’d ever seen on him.
She watched him, taken aback by how effortlessly he seemed to do it. He wasn’t making a big deal out of it like Jack or questioning her like Nico. It was simple. Calm.
"You're not going to mock me or make some sarcastic comment?" she asked, surprised.
Matt looked at her, soft brown eyes meeting hers. “You don’t always need to do everything yourself, Y/N. It’s okay to ask for help sometimes.” He said it so casually, but it meant so much more than just peeling an orange.
She smiled, the warmth of his words washing over her. “Thanks, Matt.”
Once the orange was perfectly peeled, he handed it to her with a small grin. “Anything for you. Besides, it’s a perfect excuse to spend a few minutes with you.”
Her heart fluttered at the sincerity in his voice. "You're sweet," she whispered, feeling a warmth rush through her chest.
Matt leaned in, his voice low and soft, “I’m just doing what feels natural.” He gave her a wink, and she knew that there was no one else who could make her feel quite like he did.
She smiled at him, holding the peeled fruit in her hand, but in that moment, it wasn’t just about the orange—it was about the connection they were building, one small gesture at a time.
“Thank you, Matt,” she said, quietly but with more meaning than ever before.

wouldn't you love to love her? - jack hughes
The New Jersey Devils have a new social media intern. Jack Hughes is determined not to care at all, except for the fact that he does.
masterlist
Tumblr media
“We’re getting a new social media intern,” Luke remarks offhandedly.
Jack tries not to roll his eyes. He’s not sure he succeeds. For as long as he’s been at the Devils, there have been perhaps dozens of new social media interns, one after another in a chain of pretty girls shoving phones into his face. Every time, it’s always the same. Another girl, fresh from college or in between jobs, asking him and the others to learn dances or take part in trends. Luke will flirt with the intern. Dawson too, probably. Even Jack, when he gets bored. Then, the internship will be up in a month or two, and they’ll get another one. Prettier, maybe, or funnier. And the cycle will begin again.
It’s not like he can really blame them, either. The hockey industry is precious, even for people who aren’t playing. If these girls want in, an internship is a great way to start. Any entry post’s a good one if it gets you where you want. Only, social media’s a pain. Jack came here to play hockey, not be in a dozen new photos and videos a day. It drives him crazy sometimes, or all the time.
So, when his brother tells him they’re getting another intern, he really couldn’t care less. Luke, more prone to fits of passion over the latest girl in Devils red, is still staring at him wide eyed, waiting for a reaction, so Jack rolls his eyes and gives him one.
“Good,” he says dully. “It’s been too long since I saw a phone camera shoved in my face. Can’t wait.”
Luke groans. “Come on, man. They’re fun, don’t give me that bullshit again. Besides, I saw you trying to buy the last one drinks.”
Jack can’t argue with this. He had been trying. It was something to do. “Won’t do it this time. I’ll leave that for you.”
Luke heaves another dramatic sigh. Jack wants to do something to stop the oppressive judgment, so he does, snatching the hat off Luke’s head and shoving it towards his mouth. Luke, predictably, nearly falls out of his chair and starts squawking indignantly. Jack just chuckles and gets up from his seat, heading towards the door. They’ve been idling in one of the cafes in the massive arena where they practice, called there early for business stuff that ended up getting delayed. Meetings always run late, and now Jack has the rare feeling of tardiness not actually being his fault.
He heads down the hall towards the locker rooms, ready at last for practice. Luke follows a few paces behind him, still complaining, something about saving violence for the ice. Bullshit, obviously. Jack does what he wants, where he wants. Hasn’t Luke figured that out by now?
Jack steals a glance over his shoulder just to rub in the injury. Luke meets his gaze and glowers, still pissy from almost taking a nose dive off his chair, but all of a sudden his eyes widen at something in front of them. Jack whips around just in time to collide with someone exiting one of the offices.
It’s not an accidental almost-impact, either, this is a complete disaster. Papers go flying. Jack manages to keep his balance, but the victim of his distraction is worse off. He has to fling out both hands to steady them, catching at their arms at the elbow before they fall over. A dozen apologies rise to his lips, but Jack only gets through about half of them before he actually looks at the person he’s just bumped into– and look, indeed, he does.
Jack has just run into a girl his age, and a very pretty girl at that. He gets lost in her eyes without even meaning to, captivated by the way the light shines in them as she opens her mouth and says, “What the hell are you doing?”
Jack blinks in surprise, feeling like he’s just been abruptly pulled out of a dream. “Huh?”
The girl stares at him like he’s crazy. “Why are you holding onto me?”
Too late, Jack realizes he never actually let go of her when he was trying to steady her. He snatches his hands away, the sinking feeling settling in that he actually has no idea how long he was standing there, captivated. No wonder this girl thinks he’s insane. This random guy comes up, runs into her, then silently holds her in his arms for what’s probably more than just a second or two? Yeah, that’s crazy in anyone’s books.
“Sorry,” Jack says again. They look at each other warily for a moment longer, then collectively, both gazes drop to the papers spilled across the ground.
Immediately, Jack dives for them, trying to gather as many as he can. He springs up again, and, not trusting himself to say anything that isn’t stupid, just awkwardly holds out the papers until she takes them. The girl gives him one last disbelieving glance, then walks purposefully past him. Jack turns and watches her go, wondering why he feels vaguely disappointed that she hadn’t stopped to talk longer. He didn’t even get her name.
Raucous laughter breaks out the second the girl disappears around a corner. Belatedly, Jack remembers that Luke has witnessed the whole thing, which is just great. The last thing Luke needs is more ammunition for making fun of him.
“That was, like, the least smooth thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Luke chokes out. “What the fuck was that?”
Heat flares into Jack’s cheeks. “Shut up,” he says, turning back to continue walking down the hallway.
Luke, however, is unwilling to let go of the horrific blunder. He trots up to walk by Jack’s side, regardless of how much Jack tries to pick up the pace. “I mean, Jesus. Way to make an entrance. Poor girl’s probably going to log that with HR.”
“Shut up,” Jack repeats through gritted teeth. “I’ve seen you do worse in front of fans.”
“We’re not talking about me right now, we’re talking about you,” Luke says happily. “I’m so telling Quinn about this.”
“You are not,” Jack warns, but even after many threats of serious violence, he’s not entirely convinced that his older brother won’t hear about this.
Jack almost manages to put the whole thing out of his mind until he and the others are hanging out in the locker room later that day. They’re all dressed, but their coach wanted a few words before they hit the ice, apparently something bureaucratic that Jack can’t wait to forget.
Instead of being introduced to a new friend of the owner or some wealthy donor, however, Coach announces that they’ll be meeting their new social media intern. Online presence is crucial for sponsors, apparently, and the Devils need to up their game. So they say. Jack thinks it’s a lot of nonsense, and is fully prepared to treat it as such until their coach beckons the new intern into the room and Jack realizes he knows her. This isn’t a stranger, someone he can ignore without another thought. This is the pretty girl Jack just ran into earlier today, and she’s the one in charge of most of his Internet footprint.
Great.
Across the room, Luke is grinning ear to ear. This is so not what Jack wanted. The coach is saying something about how they’ll all be pulled one by one today for introductions and a few quick videos that can be parceled out during the next week or so. Usually, they would ask Nico first, captain rights and all that, but they need him to advise on some drills, so they go for the next best– Jack himself.
They’ll be filming TikToks or whatever a few halls over so as to not distract anyone, so Jack makes his way over with no small amount of trepidation. She hadn’t seemed so excited to meet him earlier, but maybe she’ll have forgotten who he was. It was a fast exchange. Maybe this means nothing at all, and they will have a great meeting, and he could even get her number or something. Yeah, not a problem.
The girl is setting up a phone on a stand when Jack shows up. She glances once at him as he approaches, then nods. “Oh, we’re starting with Mr. Observant. Cool.”
Jack feels his face turn a bright scarlet. “I’m not– I’m sorry about that. Honestly. I just didn’t see you.”
“That’s fine,” the girl says with a listless wave of her hand. “It was funny. I just thought hockey players would have more reflexes or something, I don’t know. Anyway, what’s your name, again?”
This is a simple question. It really is. Yet for some reason, Jack finds himself bothered. He’s been with the team for a while now, had that A on his uniform for a while now, and maybe he shouldn’t, but he’s gotten comfortable with his reputation. People know who he is. He’s recognized on the street, asked for photos while he’s getting coffee, all of that. And now this girl– this intern– is pretending like she doesn’t know who he is, and insulting his reflexes to boot?
“Jack,” Jack replies tersely. “Are you going to tell me your name, or should I just guess?”
“Y/N,” the girl answers him. “What do you do on the ice except run into people?”
“I play hockey,” Jack deadpans. “What else do you want me to say?”
Y/N just smiles at him, the picture of innocence. “Your position? This is supposed to be an introduction, isn’t it? I have to make sure I have a good picture of the team.”
Fine. Fine. Jack can be civil. He’s going to play along and then he’s going to leave and make somebody else deal with her.
“Yeah, position. I'm an alternate captain, a center. Left wing. That matters.” He feels like he’s rambling. This is stupid. He’s stupid. He never does this.
“Sure it does,” Y/N says, one eyebrow raised. “Do you have to tell everyone you’re cool or just the interns?”
“Huh?” Jack asks. “I’m not– I’m just talking.”
Y/N nods. “I’m sure you do. Talking and hockey, that’s impressive. I can see why the Devils wanted you.”
“Your team spirit needs some work,” Jack notes. “Why’d they hire you, your winning personality?”
“That, and I’m wonderful at making infographics,” Y/N informs him breezily.
“I bet they’re terrible,” Jack says on instinct. “Clashing colors and all that. Can you even draw a straight line?”
Y/N cocks her head to the side. “I don’t know, can you shoot on goal without getting injured?”
Jack takes a step forward on instinct before he remembers that he cannot fight social media interns and backs down. Still, the anger simmers in his head so bad he’s not sure if the red all around him is for the Devils or just the film of rage clouding his eyes.
This isn’t good for him. His team needs him out there on the ice with a level head, even in practice. Jack forces a smile and says, “I guess you’ll see at our next game, won’t you?”
Y/N meets his gaze with a mirror smirk, which bothers Jack more than if she’d tried to one-up him again. He grabs his stick with more force than necessary, making himself step past her and onto the ice before he does something he’ll regret. Once he’s out there, skating broad loops to warm up, Jack can almost put the whole exchange out of his head.
Almost.
Luke finds him after practice, because of course he does. Somedays, Luke swears that little brothers must be born with an innate knowledge of how to stick their heads into other people’s business. Fleetingly, he wonders what Quinn would think about that, then moves on before that lesson can settle in.
“I love our new intern,” Luke says happily on the drive back to their apartment.
Jack scoffs. “Sure you do. You love rubbing this in my face.”
Luke glances at him, surprised. “No, honestly. I think she’s great. Super funny, too.”
Jack turns to stare at him with disbelief so abruptly he almost swerves the car into a telephone pole. Veering to correct course, Jack spits out, “Y/N? You think Y/N is great?”
Once Luke stops pretending like they’ve almost died– which they didn’t, by the way, Jack had everything under control– he calms down enough to say, “Yeah, I do. She was super nice to me. I need to ask if she’s local so we can hang after the internship ends.”
Jack feels as if he’s been dropped into an alternate reality. “You’re serious. You really do like Y/N?”
Now Luke’s looking at him like he’s the crazy one. “Like I said, yeah. Why, what happened when you talked to her? Was she still mad about earlier?”
“You could say that,” Jack grits out, knuckles white around the steering wheel.
Luke chuckles. “That’s kind of funny, actually.”
“It is not,” Jack mutters, but Luke remains in high spirits the whole drive back anyway.
To the great amusement of his younger brother, Jack and Y/N continue to be at odds the next time the Devils have to film social media videos, and the next time, and the next. Even when they start off a meeting on relatively stable ground, something will happen to have them sniping again, and they’ll be at each other’s throats by the time they leave the building in the evening.
What makes it worse is that Jack is apparently the only one suffering from Y/N’s cold shoulder. Everyone from the captain to the rookies seems to have gotten along just fine with their newest social media intern, yet Jack feels like he walks around with a target on his back every time she’s in office. They’ve started to ignore each other instead of purposely tossing insults, but that’s as close as he’ll ever get to a truce.
Jack has started counting down the days until she leaves. He would love some peace and quiet. Maybe the next intern will be normal, or they’ll all be poisoned forever just because Y/N L/N showed up and changed Jack’s life for good.
God, he feels like she’s crept into every part of his world. He’ll be scrolling on his phone and the videos she filmed will appear on his For You page out of nowhere. Jack swears he can sense her in every quick cut, every box of text, every song selection. Walking through the arena, he sees her everywhere– ducking into a meeting room, discussing potential videos with some of the PR agents, tucked into the bleachers so she can watch them practice and snap some shots. Jack is starting to seriously wonder if there has ever been a time when she hasn’t been wound around him like a loose thread come undone from his favorite coat.
Even now, he can see her. Jack has finally left a late-night practice, breath fogging up in the cold evening air. He’s glad for the warmth of his car when he slides in. Luke went back with some friends, but Jack had wanted to hang around a while longer to practice some skills before the next game.
Y/N must have been working late too, because he can see her now, walking out of the parking lot and towards the sidewalk leading into town. Jack assumes she’s waiting for someone to pick her up, but Y/N’s steps don’t show any indication of slowing down. Is she actually walking on a night like this? Jack is cold just thinking about the weather outside. Y/N has a coat on, but it won’t be enough to discourage the bite of the wind.
Before he can even think about what he’s doing, he’s pulled his car alongside her. Y/N looks panicked when he comes to a stop, but relaxes somewhat when Jack rolls down the window and calls out to her. “Are you waiting for someone?”
Y/N shakes her head. “No, I’m walking back. Have a nice night.”
She turns back to the sidewalk, evidently expecting him to keep driving. Jack also expects himself to keep driving, but he doesn’t. “It’s awfully cold to be walking. How far is your apartment?”
“Not far,” Y/N says. “Twenty minutes, maybe?”
That settles it. “You’re not walking twenty minutes in the freezing cold,” Jack decides. “Besides, I thought you were dropped off. Isn’t someone coming to pick you up?”
Y/N pauses oddly, and it occurs to Jack that he probably shouldn’t be noticing how she gets to and from work each day. Still, when she speaks again, he’s pretty sure the annoyance in her voice isn’t directed at him, for once. “I was dropped off, but my friend canceled on me. Hence the walk.”
Jack’s mood immediately sours. That’s a shitty move for sure, and even if he doesn’t always see eye to eye with Y/N, he’d never leave her out here, shivering even after a few minutes of walking. And he won’t tonight, either.
“I can drive you, if you like,” Jack offers abruptly. He’s not sure why he does it. He never has before. They’ve never been in a position like this before, and maybe they won’t either. Still, he doesn’t take it back.
Y/N, apparently heedless of the gravity of this offer, just smiles and shakes her head. “That’s alright, I’ll just call an Uber. Thanks, though.’
Jack blinks and stares at her. It had taken such a rush to get the words out that it honestly didn’t occur to him that she would just say no. “Is this because you’re mad at me?”
“I’m not mad at you, Jack,” Y/N laughs. “I’m walking. You should get going soon, you’re going to disrupt traffic.”
“Fuck traffic, you’re cold,” Jack says disbelievingly. “Get in the car, Y/N. Please?”
She looks like she’s going to argue, but a particularly frigid gust of wind rips through that thin jacket and a moment later, Y/N is settling into his passenger seat. She turns to look at him, and Jack looks back at her, just a few spans apart. They’re close enough that he can see the flutter of her eyelashes as she blinks. Close enough that he could reach out and touch the slow bloom of cold on her cheek if he just tried.
“So?” Jack manages to pull himself together long enough to ask, “What’s your address?”
Y/N blinks, evidently startled out of some reverie, then pulls it up on her phone. Jack follows the directions, fingers drumming absentmindedly on the steering wheel. The car is quiet, and it weighs on him like a burden until he finally blurts out, “Why do you hate me, though?”
Y/N looks baffled. “I don’t hate you.”
Jack snorts. “Of course you do. You get along with every single member of this team but me, it’s a little hard not to take that personally. Come on, just tell me. Is it because I ran into you that first day?”
Y/N laughs again. It’s one of the few times it’s with him, not at him, and Jack lets the sound wash over him like sunlight. It’s a good sound. He wouldn’t mind hearing it again, maybe.
“That was funny. No, it wasn’t that. It’s just–” Her voice drops off, suddenly serious. “Do you remember Emma? She was your social media intern last summer. She’s the one who suggested I take this program, actually.”
Vague memories appear in Jack’s head. “Kind of? We’ve had a lot of interns.”
“Yeah, well, she’s one of my best friends, and the most important piece of advice she gave me before I started was to stay the hell away from you.”
Jack almost misses his turn. “What? Why?”
He risks a glance away from the road and towards her, but Y/N is keeping her head perfectly straight, not allowing herself to look at him in the slightest. “Something about you breaking her heart. She seems to remember you flirting a lot, buying her drinks, then dumping her for someone more interesting the second the internship ended.”
Jack winces. “That does sound familiar, actually. Sorry. I didn’t mean to–”
Y/N interrupts him with a wave of her hand. “Yeah, no, I get it. I love Emma, I really do, but she’s got a habit of moving quickly. Still, she was really hurt for a while. I figured anyone who could do that to my friend and not even remember was someone who didn’t need me to be nice to them.”
Guilt starts to pool in Jack’s stomach, icing him down to the core. “Still. I was a dick.”
“You still are, on occasion,” Y/N says, smiling slightly, “But I’ve been bad too, I think. I wanted to get revenge for my friend, but I’ve been more mean than needed. I’m sorry too.”
Jack comes to a slow stop in front of one of the notoriously long red lights of their shared city. As the scarlet of the traffic light washes over them, Jack takes advantage of the stopped traffic to hold out a hand to her. “How about a truce, then? If we’re both sorry?”
Y/N considers his outstretched hand, then nods at last and shakes it. “I’m good with that. Let’s start over.”
“Let’s start over,” Jack repeats.
Her hand is still a little cold in his, even after the few minutes they’ve spent talking. It occurs to Jack that he could probably sit here for a while longer, warm her hands up with his, and then Y/N nudges him in the side and Jack realizes the light has turned green. He drops her hand hastily, turning back to the road in the hopes that she won’t notice the slow flush of heat to his cheeks.
The rest of the drive back is uneventful. Jack offers to walk Y/N to the door of her apartment complex, which Y/N jokingly calls creepy then smiles for real when he insists. They part with a promise to try harder next time, and Jack doesn’t think his feet have ever felt so light on the walk back from practice. He goes to bed that night like a little kid, practically giddy at the thought of the day ahead.
Looking back on it, Jack isn’t sure what he expected to happen with them after that. A celebration, maybe some fanfares? Or just a normal conversation in which she expressed how glad she was to see him and Jack could do the same? He doesn’t get any of that. In fact, they hardly see each other for most of the next few days. This isn’t too unexpected; although they love to complain, the players and media don’t see each other that often unless someone’s sworn on live TV or otherwise messed up their online presence.
Still, by the time Jack’s path finally crosses with Y/N’s, he’s really hoping for something special. He’s sort of crazy the whole time they’re filming videos, all raised eyebrows and hopeful glances, but instead of seizing the opportunity to make fun of him, Y/N just giggles a little and goes on with her life. It’s not bad, all things considered, but Jack– Jack wants more.
When hasn’t he, after all, wanted more? He wants to be better at skating. He wants to score more goals. He wants to stop getting brushed off by the commentators. He wants, more than anything, for some reason, for the pretty girl interning for their media department to do more than just look at him with a faint smile every now and then.
The sheer wanting starts to consume him. Jack goes out of his way to be exceptionally funny, astoundingly clever, practically fantastic in every way, yet nothing seems to wow Y/N. They’re just talking, which is certainly more than he had a few weeks ago, but Jack doesn’t want to just be talking to her, he wants to be back in his car again, with her leaning over and laughing at his jokes, her cold hands in his, telling him that maybe she’d misjudged him after all. Jack doesn’t just want more, he wants her, and that is making him insane.
Worse still is the fact that he doesn’t have her. Jack has spent his whole life, it feels like, hating the ‘pretty boy hockey player’ persona. He’s certain it’s cost him deals or trades or something over the years with the way people refuse to take him seriously. Yet now, Jack isn’t cursing its existence, but rather wondering why the hell it hasn’t worked. He’s still the same guy, same face. That stubborn acne patch on his chin has been clear for weeks now. He got a haircut, and people said it was good this time. Everything should be in his favor, looks-wise. So why doesn’t it seem to have a single effect?
It’s baffling, honestly. Jack cannot stand it. Worse still, the internship period is starting to slip away, and soon enough Y/N will be gone for good, leaving Jack to reel in her absence and wonder why he couldn’t make her like him enough to stay.
His mood sours whenever he thinks about it, which is often. Like now, even, in between Jack’s hours on the ice. They’re swapping out players in shifts, and Jack won’t be on for another five minutes or so. He’s sitting on one of the metal bleachers, hoping that watching the others will help keep his mind off things, but it’s not working too well.
Someone sits down right next to him, and Jack is about to start asking why they couldn’t pick anywhere fucking else to sit when he realizes it’s Y/N.
“Oh,” he says, trying desperately to sound cool and not bone-tired from practice, “Hey. D’you need another TikTok or something?”
“No TikToks,” Y/N says, smiling. “We can do a bonus one if you want, though, I know how much you love them.”
Jack chuckles. “They’ve been growing on me.” No reason why.
Y/N grins like she knows exactly what he’s thinking. “High praise. I hope you carry that spirit to the next social media intern, too.”
Jack sighs plaintively. “Do you really have to go? You fit in well, you know. You might as well stay a little longer.”
“That so?” Y/N asks, one eyebrow raised.
Jack looks away. “I don’t know. I heard some of the guys saying–”
Y/N cuts him off, lips twitching up into a smile. “I don’t care about the guys, Jack. What do you think?”
“I think you should stay,” Jack mumbles. He still can’t look her in the eyes. “With me.”
As soon as he says it, he knows it’s true. It doesn’t have to be through the Devils or not. He just wants Y/N with him for a while longer, to tease him when he’s being stupid and cheer for him during the games. He wants to hear her laugh longer than just the next few days. He wants to get coffee and buy flowers and match outfits and do a hundred things that would be special because he’d be doing them with her. That, more than anything, is what he wants.
A soft pressure on his hand; Jack looks up to realize Y/N has put her fingers over his, and squeezes slightly. He squeezes back by instinct.
“I want that too, Jack,” she tells him.
The smallest spark of luck is creeping back into his veins. “I thought you didn’t go for hotshot hockey players,” he says. “Especially not ones that flirted with the interns.”
Y/N rolls her eyes, but she’s laughing slightly, so they’re okay. “I wasn’t supposed to do that. The idea was that I would try to avoid it.”
Jack grins. “How’s that working out for you?”
“Surprisingly badly,” Y/N confesses. “I’m not too mad about it, though. Something tells me we’re going to make this work out.”
“It will,” Jack promises. He’s going to make sure of it. Looking at Y/N, the light in her eyes when she smiles, Jack knows that he’s going to do everything in his power to keep her. He rubs his thumb over her hand, still in his, and cannot help but think about how lucky he is.
Y/N looks like she’s going to start blushing. “Let’s talk about this when all of your teammates aren’t watching,” she says suddenly.
Jack glances up and realizes that he’s on the receiving end of quite a few curious looks from the Devils still on the ice. Luke, especially, looks like he has several questions he wants to ask. Jack groans, mentally preparing himself for the absolute nuisance his little brother will become on the drive home.
Still, it doesn’t faze him for long. “How about we talk about it this Saturday?” Jack asks. “I’ll pick you up at seven.”
Y/N is breathtaking when she smiles at him. Jack might have to keep looking forever, just so he remembers. “I think that sounds alright to me.”
Jack opens his mouth to say something stupid like how he can’t wait, but the coach blows a whistle to usher him and some of the others back onto the ice, and Jack is saved from himself. “I’ll see you then,” he repeats somewhat needlessly.
Y/N nods, and Jack turns to leave. He’s still got most of his senses intact, despite evidence to the contrary, and Jack does know better than to kiss Y/N in front of his whole team and coach in the middle of practice, but– well, there’s a difference between what Jack knows and what Jack does, and today, he kisses her anyway. It’s good. Really good. Good enough to deal with the teasing when he finally makes it down to the ice. Good enough to keep him hooked until their date, and the next, and the next. Good enough for forever.

SPRING INTO SUMMER JACK HUGHES
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary as jack goes through his healing process, he can’t help falling in love with you
pairing jack hughes x athletic trainer oc
Tumblr media
You weren’t in Vegas when Jack rammed into the boards, but you were present for the aftermath.
The immediate surgery Jack underwent after his collision with the boards was one of the things your mentor, Matt the head Athletic Trainer for the New Jersey Devils, used to teach you.
While you were in the process of training for your board exams, you were given the opportunity to learn under him because of your exceptional grades and performance at Rutgers University.
Although you’d loved the rush you felt on the sidelines of football games at SHI Stadium, nothing could compare for your passion for hockey.
In this office of the Athletic Training room inside of Prudential Center, you were completing an injury report for one of the players with a minor strain, when Jack knocked on the office door.
This appearance wasn’t irregular at all, Jack spent most of his time at Prudential Center in the training room now, while everyone else was on the ice practicing.
Being put in charge of Jack’s rehabilitation process had been something you were awaiting to have the responsibility of. Of course Matt had to approve everything you were doing, but it was nice to feel in charge of such a huge part of the team.
“Hey Bella, do you have a sec?” he asked leaning on the side of the open door frame.
You rolled out of your desk, and turned your chair towards him, “Yeah for sure, what’s up?”
You couldn’t deny that Jack wasn’t good looking, and the fact that you guys were close in age didn’t hurt.
“I was wondering if I could start doing more intense workouts, I mean my shoulders pretty strong now,” he said while moving his shoulder around, smiling.
Jack was probably one of the most stubborn athletes you’d worked with, all he wanted to do was get back on the ice and play hockey.
You gave Jack a knowing look, “Look Jack, it’s gonna be a while until you’re at 100% and that’s okay. You’re not a machine, you’re human.”
He walked closer to you, “I know, I just want to make sure I’m gonna be alright by next season.”
“And you will be, if you keep taking it easy and going at the pace your body is ready to. Forcing yourself to do things that hurt, is gonna affect you more in the long run,” you argued back knowing you guys went back and forth like this weekly.
Before he could reply, some players walked in, signaling the end of morning skate.
Getting up from your chair to attend to them you started to walk towards the door, “We can talk about this more later if you want, but it’s going to be the same answer every time.”
He had a fake pout on his face, while you continued, “Now come do your rehab, before I have to kick you out,” you joked.
Walking into the main training room, you were greeted with Dawson, Nico, and Luke doing their daily rehab.
While Nico was stretching out his leg, he started, “I think I messed up my knee during practice, doc,” he stopped his stretches and pointed towards his leg.
“First off, I’m not a doctor like I’ve told you about a million times. And second, let me see.”
Leaning down, you told him to tell him if the way you were moving his leg hurt.
While moving his leg, his silence was very telling about his condition.
“I have an inkling you’re lying to me so you can play tomorrow,” you said because you could tell he was in pain because of the way he flinched when you maneuvered his leg.
“Bella, why would I ever lie to you?” Nico said in a joking way, almost laughing.
You nodded your head laughing, “I’ll get you some ice for now, but I want to see you before the game tomorrow.”
After giving Nico his ice bag, and making sure everyone around the training room was doing alright, you headed back to your office.
When you entered, you were met with Jack in your chair, on his phone.
“Well you sure got comfortable, didn’t you?” You said, taking a seat in another chair that was next to yours.
“Bella, we’e good friends aren’t we?” Jack said, putting down his phone unexpectedly.
“I guess so? Why do you ask,” you said genuinely confused, he’d always jokingly called you guys “best friends” but he seemed completely serious now.
“Would you ever wanna hang out, like outside of this,” he said motioning throughout the training room.
You ruffled your eyebrows, “I mean, sure? I mean what would we do.”
“Whatever you want,” he said smiling widely.
Since Jack had ask you to hang out, two weeks ago, it felt like you guys had become a lot closer.
You’d both went out for coffee, hung out on his couch watching movies with Luke, and went on walks together. Honestly, he’d been a better friend than you thought he could be.
You couldn’t deny that your thoughts of a romance between you and Jack lingered around your mind, but he hadn’t made any advances and you didn’t wanna ruin your relationship.
While you were stretching Luke out on the training room bed, Jack watched intently doing his own rehab, “Bella do you wanna carpool tomorrow?” He asked out of the blue.
“I guess so, why?”
“I was thinking we could go get dinner after,” he responded.
“Okay, fine by me,” you said continuing to stretch out Luke’s leg.
When you entered Jack’s SUV the next morning, you looked back to find Luke in back seat on his phone, “Why is he sitting in the back seat?” You asked looking towards Jack’s tired eyes.
Before Jack could reply Luke did for him, “He made me get back here the second we pulled up,” he said clearly annoyed.
Jack kept his eyes on pulling out of the parking lot of your apartments, not acknowledging Luke’s attitude pointed towards him.
Later, after you’d finished up assisting Matt with everyone in the training room, you texted Jack wondering where he’d gone, and he quickly replied back telling you to go down to his car.
Walking up to his BMW, you saw him in the drivers seat, and joined him on the passengers side.
“Hi Jack,” you said buckling your seatbelt.
“Hey Bell, I was thinking we could go to this one Italian restaurant I like,” he said while putting his hand on the back of the passengers seat to pull out.
There was something about a man who knew they were attractive, but didn’t always feel the need to flaunt it, that made you crazy. Just the way Jack did simple things, that he probably didn’t even notice, that made you so attracted to him.
“That’s fine, whatever you want,” you agreed easily, “So why’d you even wanna go to dinner tonight?” you questioned.
Jack glanced at you and smiled, “Why can’t I have dinner with one of my best friends?”
You laughed at his sarcastic tone, “Sorry for asking, Mr. I don’t like going out during the season.”
“We’re not going out, we’re having a nice dinner.”
The rest of the drive was filled with you guys silently listening to whatever song you played on Jack’s phone. For a hockey player, Jack didn’t get many notifications on his phone. You weren’t snooping, you just happened to glance at his notifications.
Once you arrived to the restaurant, you entered and were met with a beautiful, clearly high-end restaurant.
“God Jack, if you’d told me this was nice, I would’ve dressed up more,” you said gesturing to your body adorned with straight leg blue jeans and a knit sweater.
“You look beautiful, come on,” he said letting you walk infront of him, with his hand on your back leading you towards a booth.
Once you sat down and skimmed the menu you looked up smiling towards him, “Damn, Jack this place is nice, do you bring all your girl friends here?”
“No, just you.”
When the waiter came to take your order, they recognized Jack, “Who is this lovely lady? You’re usually just here with your brother,” the man questioned with a thick Italian accent.
“This is Bella, Lorenzo.” Jack said replying to the waiter by name.
Once he took both of you guys’ orders the conversation between you and Jack flowed easily.
When there was a moment of silence Jack looked at you intently, “Could you ever see us being more than just friends?”
You stared at him, smiling widely, “I think I would like that.”
Once both of you guys finished eating while having quiet conversation, you quietly exited the restaurant and he drove you to your apartment.
When Jack walked you up to your apartment door, he spoke happily, “Thank you for coming to dinner with me tonight.”
“Thank you for inviting me, I had a really nice time.” You replied.
There was a few seconds of silence before Jack spoke quietly, “Can I kiss you?”
“I’d like that alot.”
Before you could take another breath, Jack leaned in and kissed you softly.
The kiss didn’t break before he whispered quietly against your lips, “You’re perfect.”

The bar was jammed. Sweaty bodies pressed into every corner of the bricked building, the heat almost unbearable. A door in the back, propped open was your only solace, serving nicely with the winter air wafting in. Although, despite the sticky air and stench of beer, you couldn’t be happier.
You stood by Nico’s side, practically glued to him, not that he would complain. Nico loved the feeling of your body against his, it brought him comfort knowing you were safely tucked away from the world. He was over the moon, still riding the high of tonight’s win. It was a solid win too. Nico got out with a 3-point night, his ego soaring.
Now, you would never admit this sober, but you loved when he got cocky. The way his body demeanor would change and he would have a special swagger in his step. The sexy smirk that never seemed to leave his face every time his gleaming eyes would settle down to yours. It was almost embarrassing the grasp this man had on you, but you loved every second of it.
His dark shirt clung tightly to his sweaty body, the heat around you two making a visible impression.
You sat next to him at a table with some of the team, celebrating their win. Seeing the wide smile on Nico’s face made you want to take everything bad in the world and toss it away. That way Nico could smile forever.
His arm rested on your thigh, corded with thick veins, squeezed slightly, just as reassurance. You squeezed his hand back.
“You know, I still can’t believe that Merc just left like that! I was in the middle of talking too. What an ass.”
You looked over to where Jack’s voice echoed. His annoyed face set on where Dawson was talking to some girl near the bar. You felt a chuckle rise in your throat, causing you to shove your face into Nico’s arm in an attempt to smother it.
Nico looked down at you with amused eyes, “What’s so funny, schatzi?”
You let out a breath, shaking your head, “Nothing much, Neeks. Just Jacky.”
Nico glanced over his shoulder at Jack, who was still complaining to his, very bored, little brother. He nodded his head slowly in understanding. When he turned back to the table, he noticed your tired eyes.
“You tired, pretty? You’ve been awfully quiet.”
This was true, but only because you enjoyed watching Nico so much. To you, that was more entertaining than talking.
“Yep, I’m all good!” You gave him a big smile. Nico searched your eyes for any insincerity but failed to find any. Accepting your answer, he turned back to Holtz, engaging in a spirited conversation about certain plays during the game.
After half an hour or so, your drink had finally run out, your empty cup now urging to be filled. You nudged Nico’s arm, gaining his attention.
“I’m gonna go get a refill,” You shook your empty cup, proving your point.
His brows furrowed, “Want me to come with you?” His eyes flickered to the large number of people, “It’s a bit crowded over by the bar.”
You smiled at his concern, but denied his request, “No thank you, baby. I’ll be fine.”
He hesitantly agreed, placing a kiss on your temple and a quick, “Be careful,” as you left.
Shimmying your way through the dense population proved to be a lot harder than you originally anticipated, getting bumped back and forth violently. By the time you had reached the bar, you could have sworn you had whiplash.
Quickly flagging down a bartender, you ordered your drink and secured a spot to wait. You bit the inside of your cheek, suddenly feeling uncomfortable by the obvious male gazes from every direction. You could only hope that one didn’t have the balls to approach you, but alas, luck wasn’t on your side tonight.
A lean man, of about 5’8, approached you, clearly too inebriated to be thinking correctly. His scruff was patchy and gross, the tell-tail signs of a failed attempt at growing a beard. His red shirt loosely hung on his body, beer wetting the sides of it. At least, you hoped it was beer. He stumbled into the slot beside you, almost on top of you.
“Hey, sexy. What’s your name?” His voice was grating, not a sultry tone to be heard. You found yourself repulsed by his presence, now desperately wishing Nico had come with you.
“None of your business, but thanks for asking.” You gave him a snide smile, hoping he would take the very obvious hint that you weren’t interested.
“Whoa, attitude, missy. I just asked your name.”
“And I don’t care.” You rolled your eyes, the strange man not making an effort to leave.
“Damn, if you’re this feisty all the time, I know a much better way to put that mouth to use.”
Fear pitted deep in your stomach at the dark look on the man’s face. Needing toi escape, you tried to make a move to leave, but he blocked your way, now caging you to the bar top. Your breath picked up in a panic, frantically searching for someone to help. It was far too loud to call for anyone and everyone around you was already preoccupied with their own conversations.
Deciding to fight back, you lifted your arm to slap the man who was rapidly approaching you. His hand came up to grip your arm harshly, drawing a hiss from your lips as pain spiked through your wrist. Tears sprung in your eyes as you tried your hardest to free yourself from the man’s body. You felt helpless as your voice died in your throat, shutting your eyes tightly.
You prepared yourself for the worst until you felt the man’s weight abruptly leave. Your eyes shot open, seeing a blur of the man get thrown to the ground. The familiar figure of your boyfriend towered over the cowering stranger.
Nico reached down, gripping the man’s collar, dragging him to his feet, and slamming him against the nearest wall.
“What the fuck, do you think you’re doing?” Nico’s eyes were ablaze with fury, a hard look resting on his once-happy face.
“I-I don’t know man,” The stranger was gasping, obviously terrified of the much larger man holding him to the wall, “I was just trying to get some pussy, like every other guy in the bar.” His meek words only fueled Nico’s anger.
“Don’t you ever fucking touch my woman like that again. Don’t ever touch any woman like that. You’re a fucking pussy.” Nico’s voice was laced with disgust as he spat at the man. Holtz and Jack rushed over, attempting to pull Nico away. He dropped the guy, worry for you now seeping into his clouded mind.
Nico was by your side within seconds, pulling your shaking form into his arms. He tucked you under his chin, tightly holding you, “It’s okay, schatzi,” He brought up a hand to cradle your head, “You’re okay. I’m here now, Nico’s here.”
You let out a slight sob, your arms recoiling into your body as you gingerly held your bruising wrist. Nico pulled away, eyes desperately raking your body to determine the cause of your pain. Once his eyes settled on your wrist, he held out his hand, silently asking to inspect the damage.
Nico felt a new wave of anger take over his body, now practically shaking as he tried his hardest to not go beat the shit out of the guy. The man had hurt you. Hurt his girl. If it were up to Nico, that guy wouldn’t be breathing right now, but fortunately for the stranger, murder is illegal. Nico carefully guided your body to the exit, not bothering to bid goodbyes.
Only once the two of you hit the cold parking lot and the adrenaline started to wear off, did you fully begin to comprehend the severity of what had happened. A fresh batch of tears formed in your eyes,  sobs rapidly pouring from your lips. Your body shook with the pure force of the cries that pierced their way through Nico’s chest.
He immediately pulled you tightly into his body, making sure to be mindful of your wrist. Nico felt his own tears well up in his eyes at your pain. He hated that he couldn’t help you, but he hated even more that he was in the building when it happened and didn’t get to you soon enough.
“I’m so sorry, baby.” Nico sniffed, “It’s all my fault this happened.”
You shook your head against his chest, slightly pulling away to look into his deeply saddened eyes, “No, don’t do that. Don’t blame yourself for something you couldn’t control.”
“I knew I should have gone with you. If I was there then he wouldn’t have hurt you.” He looked away biting his lip as he tried not to cry. His broken voice stabbed your heart. It was gut-wrenching to see Nico blame himself for what that man did.
“Stop, Nico. It was not your fault,” You held his face gently, forcing him to meet your eyes, “Please, stop blaming yourself. I chose to go by myself, that’s not on you.” He opened his mouth to protest, but you were too quick, “Don’t say anything else. Please, for me? Stop.”
He nodded slowly as tears silently slid down his cheeks. Nico reached up, carefully cradling your wrist that was near his face, leaning to place a sweet kiss on the black and blue splotches.
“Let me get you home, schatzi. Wanna take care of you.”

I grew up in this town for as long as i can remember, i wasn’t introverted, but i wasn’t an extrovert either. I spoke when i had to, leaving me with a group of friends here and there. Beginning high-school was another story, i still had my small group of friends including this one girl Momo. I don’t exactly know how i became friends with her but shes been the friendliest since i could remember.
But i find myself drowning in the sinkhole of over working, and i think she could tell because she recommended a sleepover/hangout with another one of her friends that she thought i would like. Momo is the only one i can truly be myself around so how can i expect her friend to even like me. I open to learning many subjects, although i don’t pick a favorite i like things about conspiracies or random theories to keep me up thinking.
My phone dings with a message, its from Momo
Momo👻: I’ll be at your place around 7! My friend is still coming over, trust me you and him are going to be great friends.
Me: Him? He’s a guy? You must be setting something up
Momo👻: Well I’m just saying if things between you guys progress than it is what it is but thats NOT what I’m trying to do at all🤣
Me: What if he’s really rude or something i cant handle more stress I’m too tired for this, if i wanted to have a guy friend then i would have asked.
Momo👻: No he’s not like that he’s a total nerd, he would never do anything harmful. Ive been friends with him for awhile, i talk to him about aliens and stuff all the time
Me: What makes you think i wanna deal with boys at all. I’ll try to be friends with him i guess but if he does anything that i can’t respect he’s getting out of my home
Momo👻: Alrightt no need to be so stuck up, your stressed just relax for a bit.
I stare up at the starry night and then bring my eyes to the clock, Momo is a few minutes late. But as a coincidence, she knocks at my door as soon as i have that thought. I go down the stairs to see her open the door, hmm must have been unlocked, but i remember locking.
Maybe i should be nice, ill try my best too. I mean she wasn’t worried about him or anything. Momo swings the door open giving me a big hug, i look behind her to see a boy. We make eye contact and he looks away timidly and fiddles with his hair. Momo knew i had a thing for nerds, she’s definitely setting something up.
(I was a little scared to introduce myself though…)
“This is my friend i told you about, his name is okarun!!”
He looks back up shyly, extended his hand to give me a hand shake. I give him a handshake back, flashing the tiniest smile to show the least bit of comfort. He steps closer to me to whisper something quiet enough not for Momo to hear
“M—my name is actually Ken takakura…” I nod my head to make sure Momo doesn’t think anything is up, i wonder why she calls him Okarun though. Momo yawns making her way to the living room and into the kitchen, opening the fridge to look for her favorite drink i usually keep at my place.
“Hey…y/n you don’t have any more of that drink..”
“Sorry, I’ll buy some more soon.” She walks back over to the entrance of the home where me and Ken were still standing awkwardly “its alright, speaking of which, the gas station is only a 5 minutes walk from here. I’ll go run and buy some!! My grandma gave me some money incase i wanted to get snacks!”
I look at her in despair. I whisper yell at her before she walks out the door “You’re leaving??!? Now???! Me alone with a boy??!!”
“Cmonn I’m gonna be back I’ll make it quick.” She gives me a sly wink before shutting my own door at my face. I turn around slowly, lifting my head up to look at Ken embarrassingly. He was looking at me but he shifted his gaze to some random spot in the house. I didn’t want to stand here forever..
“We can just go to my room for now while we wait…”
I guide him up the stairs towards my room, i leave background music playing to calm me and i accidentally forgot to turn it off. We enter my room and his eyes lighten up like a puppy. I had a fluffy rug, thick bed sheets many tiny figures and posters, with a neat desk and dim lights. He felt a comforting feeling as he heard the music that was left playing.
He looks around and he notices i have a book on my desk titled “conspiracy’s and theories #1: Aliens? Are they real?” I sat on my bed and i saw him approach the book for a closer inspection, his eyes glow as he looks up at me.
He realizes he touched something without asking and he places the book down quickly while fiddling with his hair again and re-adjusting his glasses. He looks down at the floor in embarrassment with a blushing face.
“I have the same book..d—do you like…aliens..?”
My goodness he is so cute. I snap out of my daydreaming after staring at him.“Well…i like reading about them. They seem cool to me and i like the unknown. I watch a-lot of documents.”
He looks up at me, with his hand still in his hair. “Do you know anything about…UAP’s and UFO’s..? I softly replied, “Yes i do read about them a little.” His eyes were in full on dull mode, he was so ready to rant. I realized he was still standing, and i was on my bed. He’s not a bad guy at all, he’s just really shy, well— so am i.
I pat the spot next to me signaling him to sit down next to me. I try to get more comfortable, i sat in a criss cross position. He looks at me with his face flushing again and he slowly makes his way to the bed, he sat in the same criss cross position facing me. His hand still in his hair obviously, his head down, he muttered…
“There have been many sightings of aliens..I—I’ve done alot of research. I should have brought my b—books but i thought that you weren’t really going to like….me..”
“Oh, i thought the same about you…that you were going to be kind of rude to me. But you like the same things as me.”
He hesitantly brings his head up to make eye contact with me, his face a pink tone due to the blush. My open window blows a cool air into the room, moonlight hitting his eyes and shining them. I avert my gaze to him to see him pondering into my eyes, his lips part as he was going to say something until we could hear the door open. It was Momo, that was really quick.
We rush back downstairs to see her with multiple bags, more than what she said she was going to buy. “Oh man, i really should have called you!! They had an amazing deal and i got so many snacks for half off!”
Me and Ken look at each-other, we slightly giggle at the goofiness of Momo. Momo ran up the stairs and came back down with a giant blanket from my closet, she places it on the couch with the snacks she bought on the table
“Cmon guys let’s watch a movie!!” I sat down with Ken trying not to be to close to make me uncomfortable, through out the movies we watched i could feel him land his attention on me. But he was very slick with it, i could hardly tell.
At the end of the night after all the movies, Momo and Ken helped clean up. Momo grabbed all of her belongings and so did Ken and they were about to leave. “Bye y/n! See you tomorrow!!”
“B—bye…” i didn’t want it to end like this… “Okarun.” He turns around and looks at me with confusion and a bit of fluster. “Could I see your phone for a sec?” He hands me his unlocked phone and i quickly type my number and my name into a new contact space and hand him his phone back. He looks at what I’ve done and his face goes from pink to a rose red. He looks up at me like his face was about to explode
It seems like he wanted to say thank you, but Momo pulled him out of the door in a hurry. The door shut on me again, but instead..i don’t feel lonely anymore. I feel a warmth entered my soul.
We could be friends…

Sitting on the bus, y/n looked at her phone, biting her fingernail. She was nervous, beyond nervous if you were to ask her. She wasn’t ready for anyone to find out, they had gone two years without anyone noticing and it could be revealed within seconds.
“You okay?” Luke sat down next to her, throwing his arm on the back of her seat.
Y/n and Luke were the rookie two on the Devils, well, because they were both rookies. She was traded from the Canadiens not long after she was drafted, why? She would never know, but she couldn’t care now.
“Nothing, why would something be wrong? Do I have a look on my face? Am I shaking?”
“No, but you’re talking fast and rambling.” Luke pointed out, his eyebrow-raising.
“Oh. I promise I’m fine.”
“Bull shit.”
“Well, you know with Nico and Jack out, I’m just a little nervous about playing by myself.”
When y/n first started practicing with the team and even through her debut, she had always played with Jack or Nico. It wasn’t a conscious thing that Lindy had done but somehow she was always on the ice with one of them. When Nico got injured, she had played with Jack but when he got hurt during the Blues game she was nervous. She hadn’t played without them since and the thought of that was terrifying.
What made it worse, is that she was playing her boyfriend, the 2023 first overall pick. What made that worse, was that no one knew they were dating. Everyone had been raving, the past two first-overall picks were all playing on the ice.
“You’ll be okay, promise.”
“Y/n/n! Luke!”
The girl turned her head to see Dawson standing at the front of the bus and they realized they were all alone, “Time for practice you two.”
“Ugh, I don’t want to.” Luke dragged her off the bus, following behind Dawson.
Her phone rang as she went into the bathroom and she answered it, “Hi?”
“Hey babe.”
“Oh, hi Con!”
“Are you here yet?” Y/n nodded her head, forgetting that her boyfriend couldn’t see her, “Hello?”
“Yes, sorry. Luke and I just got off the bus.”
“I heard something about us filming a video or something, I don’t really know.”
The girl groaned, “Of course. Why can’t we-”
“Y/n/n hurry up!” Both she and Connor stopped talking at the voice, “Give me a second!”
Whoever was behind the door, she couldn’t tell, walked away and y/n sat her phone down on speaker as she got changed, the two catching up. When she was done, the two said goodbye and she walked out, startled to see Luke standing there, “Oh!”
“So, who was that?”
“Who was what?”
“The guy on your phone, dumbass.”
“Hey! Unnecessary roughness.” That had become an inside joke with her and the team. Whenever they were at practice and one of the guys accidentally shoved her a little too hard, she would always stop and call it ‘unnecessary roughness’. This happened both on and off the ice.
“I’ll take your clothes, you go find your way to the ice.” Luke grabbed y/n’s clothes that she had changed out of to the clubhouse.
‘Find your way to the ice’ was an easy task, she had been to the United Center plenty of times. However, she purposely got lost in hopes of running into Connor, which was successful. She walked down the hallways, running into staff and other Hawks players who kindly waved at her. When she took a brief look at her phone, going to text the group chat that she was lost she ran into a chest.
“Connor!”
Connor looked down at the girl and smiled, “Hi.” She gave him a tight hug, some tears slipping out.
He pulled away, his smile turning into a frown. He placed his hands on her cheeks, wiping the stray tears, “What’s wrong, baby?”
She shook her head, “Nothing. I’m just so happy to see you. I haven’t seen you in months.” Connor wrapped his arms around his girlfriend once more, practically squeezing the life out of her, “It’s okay, I promise.”
They continued to hug for a few moments and when they finally pulled apart, y/n’s tears were still on her face. She went to dry her face off when a loud voice echoed down the hallway, “Hey!”
The two turned to see Jesper and Timo standing there, faces plastered with anger as they looked at their teammate/little sister with tears falling down her face. The two walked towards them and separated them, “Guys? You okay?”
Both their faces softened at y/n’s voice and looked down at her, “Shouldn’t we be asking you two that?”
“What do you mean?” Connor spoke up, his arms crossing over his chest. Now, the Devils and Hawks were not rivals. They had no affiliation with them and only played them twice a season, once at home and over in Chicago, so really the two shouldn’t have a reason to be mad at the two talking. If anything, they should be glad that their girl was making conversation with other NHL players besides themselves, especially one who was the same age as her, but Timo and Jesper’s faces tensed up at the 18-year-old’s voice, “I don’t know Bedard why don’t you tell us why our girl is crying? What did you say to her?”
Y/n went to defend her boyfriend but the two weren’t having it. Timo dragged the girl away from their teammate and Connor as she tried to get through to the two men. None of them listened once again and she couldn’t do much but give up.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Throughout practice, y/n took her frustration out on her teammates and the puck. The boys exchanged looks with each other as practice went on, having no explanation for why she was acting like this. Lindy was confused as well and as soon as y/n ‘accidentally’ shoved Jesper into the boards, which also didn’t bode well with her since Jesper was 5’10” and weighed 175 pounds. As she ran into him, she tripped over both his and her skates, causing her to go flying to the boards as well.
She let out a yelp in pain as she landed on her arm. It wasn’t anything serious but the initial action of her landing on it caused a big enough ache through her arm for her to verbally react to it.
Connor had been watching from the stadium seats and winced when he saw it happen. He went to run down when he remembered Jesper’s words.
‘If I ever see you near her again, I wouldn’t mind getting a suspension.’
Sure it was a little harsh, but y/n was his teammate, his little sister, of course, he was going to be protective and so was everyone else on the team.
The whole team crowded around y/n, the trainer pushing their way through the hoard of hockey players to assess the girl’s injury. As soon as they went to touch her arm, she shoved them off, “I’m fine.”
The trainer nodded their head, “I understand that but I still need to-”
Y/n got up and threw her gloves on the ground, “I said I’m fine!” She skated a little ways away and started moving her arm around, “See, I’m fine. I could punch someone if I fucking wanted to.”
She continued her skate and got off the ice, heading for the locker room. She didn’t mean for her words to come out so harsh, nor did she mean to swear, but she was mad. Who were they to tell her who she could and couldn’t be around? They weren’t her keeper.
Connor met her in front of the visiting clubhouse, “Are you okay?”
She nodded her head, having cooled off from her walk and it wasn’t him that she was mad at, “I’m gonna be so trash tomorrow.”
“Hey don’t say that, y/n/n. You’re going to be great!”
“But, Nico and Jack-”
“Nico and Jack have nothing to do with your performance. Sure they might enhance it, but you control how you play. Tomorrow you are going to kick ass, as much as I don’t want you to- not like that! I want you to do well it’s just that if you do well that means-”
Y/n cut him off with a kiss, “I know what you meant, Connie.”
Connor blushed and nodded his head. The two heard footsteps coming their way and immediately split up, heading back in their respective directions.

Throwing on her suit, y/n got ready to head to the UC. She slicked her hair back into a ponytail and put her heels on. She headed down to the lobby of the hotel and waited in the corner, away from anyone else. She hadn’t talked to anyone since yesterday’s practice and she wasn’t planning on talking to anyone until she absolutely had to.
She sat at the back of the bus instead of sitting next to Luke like she always did. She put her headphones in and listened to her holiday music, she didn’t care what anyone else said, holiday music made her happy. She could hear the quiet conversations around her through her headphones even though she tried to drown them out.
Placing her headphones back into her pocket and stood up ready to get off the bus. She was stopped as soon as she was about to get off the bus by Vitek, who handed her a cup of coffee. Vitek was one of the players that she could never be mad at, he was adorable and no one could be mad at him.
“Thanks, V.” She gave him a grateful smile and he returned one right back, letting her get off the bus. She ignored the cameras flashing as she walked to the clubhouse, following whoever had gotten off the bus in front of her.
The team all went through their pregame rituals, getting ready for the game. No one attempted to talk to y/n, mostly because she was always nervous before games and any slight conversation made her even more nervous.
During pregame, as they were practicing, everyone could tell something was off. The Devils knew something was off, Lindy knew something was off, the Hawks knew something was off, and even the fans knew something was off. They chalked it up to just the absence of Nico and the recent absence of Jack, they had lost their two-star players without much time apart.
Y/n stood between Dawson and Nathan during the National Anthem, making eye contact with Connor since he was ironically directly across from her. They slowly got through warmups and soon it was time for the game to start.
Having faith, and assuming that she had a complete reset and she was back to normal, Lindy sent her out for the beginning face-off. She wanted to protest but she knew she couldn’t. She skated toward center ice and faced her boyfriend. The two sighed before bending down into position. Let’s just say, it was not a good start for the Devils.
It was almost two minutes into the game and Taylor Hall had scored already. Y/n wasn’t on the ice when it happened, having changed lines just beforehand. She sighed amongst the others on the benches and leaned over and whispered into Toffoli's ear, “Can you get a penalty for checking your own teammate?”
Toffoli laughed, causing her to let one out as well. The bench looked at each with smiles on their faces, glad to see their girl smiling once again.
Over halfway into the period and y/n had done jack-shit. No goals, no assists, no nothing. It was like she was invisible out there, well not really. She had gotten a few hits which was no big deal but normally, those wouldn’t have happened. She would have dodged them completely or softened the blow a little bit, but she just let them happen.
When Dawson scored his first goal of the season she was on the ice with him. She skated fast and hugged him, so excited for him. That was the only other time she was happy during that period. Every other time she came off the ice she was so close to chucking her stick into a board or the bench itself, she was pissed off. She wanted to prove something to everyone and herself that she could do something without Nico or Jack, and right now, the only ones she was proving right were the ones who said she was trash from the start.
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
During the first intermission, the Devils walked back somewhat happy, they were leading 2-1, Dawson had his first goal and so did Max Willman. Lindy spoke briefly about the first period and kept making little jabs towards y/n. None that were hurtful but ones that tried to ignite a spark in her for a second.
That didn’t happen at all. The second period was worse than the last if that was even possible. Everyone could tell she was frustrated. Connor noticed it the most when she was on the ice with him. Her whole body was more tense, her shot was weak and floppy, and her passing was not on point.
The second intermission was when Lindy stormed into the clubhouse, “What was that, y/l/n?!”
The team snapped their heads up at their coach, they hadn’t heard him so mad at y/n before.
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”
“Damn right, it won’t happen again. You’re playing like shit.”
“Jeez, I know I suck, but you don’t have to frame it that way.” Y/n’s eyes watered up.
Lindy knew she could play better, he was determined to make it that way, “You have to man up. You think Hischier gets off all high and dry when he plays like you are? You think Hughes is going to sit on his ass after a game when he did nothing all game? No.”
She looked at the team, looking for some support but she knew she didn’t deserve it, “You have got to put your personal issues aside, this team is what matters now. I don’t care who’s hanging out with who, who’s kissing who, who’s fighting who, I don’t care. You all get your heads in the game and get out there and play some hockey.”
The team was speechless, “Do you hear me?”
“Yes, coach/sir.”
゚+*:୨୧:*﹤
Coming back for the third period, y/n was nervous, more nervous than before. Yet it seemed like Lindy’s speech worked.
4:35 into the third period, y/n scored. John assisted and the team was elated for the girl. They patted her head and hugged her before she skated off to high-five the bench. And from the other side of the ice, even though his opponent just scored, Connor held a smile on his face, he was proud of his girl.
Although, that wasn’t enough for y/n. If she was going to prove herself, she was going to prove herself. The team briefly faltered when Donato got his goal but right before the game ended, y/n got herself another goal, unassisted this time.
Everyone was proud of her, especially Nico who was watching from home and Jack would be too when he was able to watch it, not knowing where he was at this moment. After the game everyone got changed back into their suits, doing some post-game interviews beforehand.
They wanted to celebrate but they weren’t going to go without y/n. They were going to go out for dinner but she declined nicely, saying she had other plans. The team looked confused as they stood outside talking with one another, but when someone all of a sudden came behind their teammate and picked her up and spun her around, the realization grew on their faces, Jesper and Timo becoming embarrassed.
They let the two have their moment for a little bit before someone cleared his throat, Luke.
“Yes, Lukas?”
“Ooo, full name bud.”
Luke glared at everyone, “Aren’t you going to introduce us to your friend?”
“I think they’re more than friends.” Dawson snickered with Nathan as they stood behind everyone else.
“Right, guys this is Connor, Connor this is the team.”
“You watch yourself, Bedard.”
“Okay, we’re leaving, bye everyone!”
The two ran off before anyone could say anything else. They got into Connor’s car and drove to their new favorite restaurant, Culver’s.

Love Deserved
Tumblr media
Jay Halstead x Voight Daughter Reader (Nicknamed Little Bird/ Birdie)
Once you give him a chance Jay wins your heart.
Warnings: little bit of spice, Hank pulls a gun
Waking up in Jay’s arms healed a part of your heart that you never even realized was cracked open. When your alarm went off you groaned lightly and he reached over you to hit the button on top of it “Birdie, wake up baby” he whispered and you grinned “I don’t want to. It’s warm and you’re here” he laughed lightly and turned you over to face him instead of your back being to his chest. You smiled once you were halfway underneath him “Well good morning Detective” “Good morning A.D.A.” he grinned before catching your lips in a soft kiss, his hands teasing your sides as you gasped lightly when he gripped your hips to tug you over with him as he turned so you were now straddling him.
“Jay!” you laughed, bracing your hands on his chest. He smiled softly “You’re so damn beautiful Birdie, especially when no one is making you doubt just how amazing you are” you smiled, your hair falling down into your face as you said “Well, a certain detective spending most of the last night loving on me and telling me over and over and over just how amazing I am probably helped that” that pulled a grin to his face “Good, because I plan to do that every night for however long you’ll let me”
Your heart flipped at his words. He really meant them. He wanted you. He saw you for you. “I really really like you Jay” you told him, leaning down to press a kiss against his lips. He moved his lips against yours, trying to deepen the kiss and fully pouted when you pulled back “I really really like you too Birdie” you looked at the alarm clock “But we really have to get dressed, especially considering you have no clothes here”
“Can we talk to Al and Justin soon?” he asked and you smiled “I’ll call Justin at lunch to see when we can get together with him or well I’ll phrase it a little differently than that but you know what I mean” he grinned “And Al?” you shrugged “I’ll call Meredith” he nodded “Ok” and pulled you into another kiss.
Tumblr media
After the initial “Hurt her and they’ll never think about finding your body” from both your brother and Al they were surprisingly supportive of you and Jay, even if it meant hiding it from your dad. Al’s opinion on the matter had been “None of my business who knows you two are dating” and Justin’s had been “Little too late for him to want to play daddy now isn’t it?”
 _________________________
The first case you had to work with intelligence after you and Jay got together came about a month later. You walked into the precinct and smiled at Trudy “Morning” she nodded “Morning sweetie” and hit the buzzer so the gate would pop. You walked up the stairs and when you hit the top where the bullpen was Al turned to look at you and a smile slipped onto his face even before Jay cut his eyes up from his computer, trying to hide the smile on his own face “Good morning A.D.A. Voight” as if he hadn’t woken you up a few hours before, trailing kisses across your bare shoulder. “Good morning detective” you greeted as you walked towards your dad’s office.
You stopped at the door, seeing him and Erin were talking and knocked “Excuse me, Sergeant, Detective. I just need to look over evidence to see if I can award the arrest warrants you requested then I’ll be out of your hair until time for the arresting officers to testify”
Your dad looked up and for just a second it seemed like he actually looked at you for once before he nodded “Ask Dawson” “Thank you” you could hear him and Erin talking as you walked out and it almost sounded like they were arguing. Guess trouble in paradise.
Tumblr media
“Dinner was amazing Olive” you told her as you helped her clear the plates off the table. Justin and Jay were washing the dishes. Jay smiled at you over his shoulder as you handed him the stack of plates “It really was”
She smiled “Thank you both” Justin turned and winked at you “I guess Halstead’s alright” you shook your head “Only took you what, six months to warm up to him?” he shrugged “I had to make sure he wasn’t going to hurt you”
“Oh hush you two, Jay can hear you” Olive laughed and Jay shrugged “I don’t mind. He’s her big brother, I love that he’s protective over her” Justin grinned and waved the dish towel in his hand at Jay “That makes me like him. He approves of the fact that me and Al would kill him over you”  you shook your head and looked at Olive “and these are the men we love?” then realized what you said when Justin and Jay both slowly turned to look at you.
“What?” Jay asked and Justin looked from you to him then reached to turn the water off “Um Olive, sweetheart. Let’s go in the living room” he passed Jay the towel and ushered Olive out of the room. You covered your face with both hands, trying to find a hole to sink into. You hadn’t meant to let that slip, you really hadn’t. You heard Jay’s footsteps right before you felt his hands cover yours gently “No hiding from me baby” he slowly pulled your hands away from your face and you looked up at him “I didn’t mean to blurt that out and it’s ok if you don’t feel the same…”
You were cut off by his lips crashing into yours, his arms slipping around your waist to pull you closer. When you had to break away from the kiss to force air down into your lungs he chuckled lightly “Birdie Voight I love you, I am in love with you. I just didn’t want to scare you by saying it first”  “You love me?” you all but whispered and he nodded “Yeah baby, I do” you laughed lightly “I love you Jay so damn much” and pulled him down into another kiss.
“BOUT DAMN TIME” Justin hollered then you heard him grunt from Olive hitting him in the stomach. “Sorry!” she laughed and you shook your head “It’s ok” Jay grinned “I’m so damn glad you’ve had him” you smiled and looked back where Justin were leaning on the doorframe “Me too, I guess”
Tumblr media
“Dad wants to talk to you” You’d been seeing Jay for almost ten months and had just made the move for him to not renew his lease and move in with you when Justin told you that. Your stomach knotted, worrying he’d found out and was going to threaten Jay’s job. “Will you come with me?” you asked Justin  and he nodded “Never considered not coming with you”
_______________________
You were getting dressed when Jay walked into your bedroom. “Baby, are you sure about this?” you nodded, looking in the mirror at him “I’ve got to know what he has to say” he slipped his arms around your waist, pulling you back against his chest “I don’t like you being around him without me there but I’m glad Justin is going” you nodded, taking a deep breath. You’d gone with just jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt for this impromptu meeting, your dad didn’t deserve anything more. A part of you started to wear one of Jay’s shirts just as a comfort means.
“Has Erin been back in the office?” you asked as his lips found your neck. He shook his head, speaking against your skin “Nope, never been more peaceful” you laughed and shook your head “Are you going out with Will?” and cut your eyes up at him. He nodded. You weren’t stupid, you knew why he all of a sudden decided to go out to dinner with his brother, the restaurant was three blocks from your dad’s house. He could get to you fast.
Your phone rang and you looked to see Justin’s name. “That’s my ride” he nodded and turned you around to kiss you. “I love you Birdie. No matter what he says or doesn’t, you are worth one hundred of him” you smiled “I love you too Jay” then grabbed your phone.
________________________
You sat next to Justin on the couch as your dad sat across from the two of you in his chair.”Alright pops, she’s here. Say what you need to” Justin started, reaching his hand out for yours. You squeezed his as you met your dads eyes and froze when you saw tears in them. “I’ve been a horrible father to you Birdie. When your mom got sick, I didn’t handle it well then when she died…” he trailed off and closed his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath. You and Justin exchanged a look, not used to this side of your dad.
When he opened his eyes he looked at you “You look so much like her. You are so much like her. I pushed you away when I should’ve pulled you close then that hole was there and I let Erin fill it and she just instigated so much and it’s taken me too long to realize that. She took a position elsewhere because I wouldn’t refuse to work with you. My partner has been more of a father to you than I have and I can’t change that but I’d like to get to know you now, if you’ll have me. Justin can come whenever I’m around you or Al, hell even Meredith. Sweetheart I just want to know my little girl”
“Dad, you’ve spent years breaking me” you whispered and he nodded, to your surprise tears slipping free “I know Birdie and I am so sorry”  you looked at Justin and he shrugged “This is up to you sis. I’m in your corner regardless” you looked back at your dad “We can start small but don’t think this changes all the hurt you’ve caused because I feel like this is just due to her being gone” he nodded slowly “Ok” Justin nodded so you stood up, pulling Justin with you. “We’re gonna go”
Your dad stood “Ok” you looked to Justin then sighed “Come here” and pulled your dad into a hug “I do love you dad, no matter the pain you’ve caused me” “I love you too Birdie and no matter how long it takes I will do my best to prove that I’m not trying to make amends just because Erin is gone”
_____________________
“I’ll still knock his ass out if he makes you cry” Jay warned that night as you were curled up on his chest. You laughed lightly and pressed a kiss to one of the scars littering his chest. “I know, I love you” he smiled “I love you too”
Tumblr media
So far your dad was actually trying to meet you halfway. Somehow he was keeping track of your cases, even the ones not coming from his unit. He’d call you to congratulate you on wins and when you lost he’d call to see if there was anything he could do. When he got a new detective in the unit to fill Erin’s spot he asked you to stop by the day she started so he could introduce her to his daughter. He even started coming with you and Justin to your mom’s grave once a week. It was a far cry from what your relationship should be but it was better than it was.
Tumblr media
You and Jay were having dinner with Al, Meredith and Lexi. Or that’s what he told you. When you pulled up to see Will and Justin’s cars in the driveway you cut your eyes at him “Why are both of our brothers here?” he shrugged “They know Al?” you shook your head “My brother, yeah. Your brother? Not that well”
He grinned “Let's head in”
____________________
After dinner and everyone had made a group effort of clearing and cleaning Al called everyone in the living room. He passed wine around to the adults and gave Lexi sparkling cider. “To my beautiful niece Birdie, who’s been back home a year” you smiled “Thank you Al and you too Meredith” she smiled “Of course sweetie”
Jay passed Will his glass and took yours to pass to Olive. “What are you doing?” you asked before he pulled a small box from his pocket and went down on one knee “Birdie, will you marry me?” That's when reality hit. He had everyone here to propose to you. “Yes, yes. Of course” you damn near giggled. He grinned and slipped the most gorgeous ring you’d ever seen onto your finger before standing to pull you into a kiss. Everyone started clapping. You smiled up at him when you broke apart from each other “I love you Jay”
Tumblr media
You didn’t want a big ceremony so a month later you stood in a private room at the courthouse with Jay. Will, Justin, Al and Meredith were there as you recited your vows and exchanged your rings. “You may kiss the bride” the judge said and Jay grinned before pulling you into a kiss.
_____________________
“Go home and get changed then meet us” Justin reminded you and Jay for the third time as you climbed in Jay’s truck and waved at Meredith “Yeah yeah. Get changed then meet the brothers for a celebration dinner. Got it! You two go pick up Olive and Nat in the meantime”
Jay laughed when you shut your door “He’s excited baby. His little sister got married” you rolled your head over to look at him “And I’m excited to get a few minutes alone with my husband” he raised an eyebrow “In that case, let’s get home”
_____________________
“Fuck Jay” you moaned as he kissed the hollow of your neck, tilting your head back to give him better access. You were currently back against the front door because you hadn’t made it any further. You put one hand on his chest and pushed him back from you. He glanced down at you, his eyebrows furrowed slightly until you smiled “Sit down on the couch” he grinned as he walked backwards to the couch, pulling you with him as he went.
You pushed him down onto the cushions and he grinned “Still bossing me around” you kicked your heels off then moved to straddle his lap “Are you really complaining about your wife bossing you around like this?” his eyes flickered across your body “Never in a million years love”
“Good boy” you muttered, catching his lips with yours. He gripped your hips as he kissed you, dragging you down across his clothed erection. You moaned into his mouth then broke away from his lips “Fuck it” and reached for his zipper “Baby?” he questioned and you grinned as you undid his pants and reached into them, hand wrapping around his hard cock before pulling it free. You leaned up just far enough to slide your panties to the side before lining him up with your opening. When you sank down onto him his head fell back against the back of the couch. “I love you” he groaned and you laughed breathlessly “I love you too” before bracing your hands on either side of his shoulders to be able to balance. Once you did you started to bounce your hips, sliding up his cock then slamming back down. “Just like that baby, fuck”
His hands found your hips, helping to guide your movements. The sounds of your mixed breaths filled the air along with the strained springs of the couch. You were so damn close and knew he was too from how rough his grip had gotten. Just before you could reach that peak the front door opened and your door hollered “GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM HER”
_____________________
You scrambled off of Jay, turning in his lap to give him time to tuck himself back into his pants. Your dad stood in the doorway and to your horror his gun was in his dad. “Fuck the fucking gun away” you demanded. “Tell me why I just walked into Jay Halstead fucking my daughter”
“You mother..” Jay started but you cut your eyes at him to tell him to stop. He rolled his eyes but didn’t say anything further. You looked down to make sure he was tucked away before standing up, putting yourself between Jay and your dad “Why are you here?” he held up a box “The stuff of your mom’s you wanted” you nodded to the table just inside the door “Put the gun away then I’ll take it”
He slid his gun back into the holster so you stepped towards him to take the box, feeling Jay stand up behind you. His arms protectively slipped around your waist. “Tell me one good reason I shouldn’t kill you” your dad told Jay and before Jay could pop off at him you laughed humorlessly “If you lay a finger on my husband I will bury you, father or not”
Jay had a proud smile as he tucked his face down into your neck. Your dad however looked even more horrified than you had felt moments before  “Husband? You two are married?” you nodded and reached for Jay’s left to show him your rings “We got married this morning at the courthouse. We were a little overzealous with celebrating and forgot to lock the door apparently”
“Married?” he repeated and you nodded. He looked from you to Jay “I didn’t even know you two were dating. How long have you been together” Jay glanced at you so you said “Over a year. We’ve been living together full time for months”
“So no one was there?” he asked and you looked at Jay who shrugged “Baby this is your show” he whispered so you looked back at your dad “Al and Meredith gave me away. Justin and Will were our witnesses” he nodded slowly “So they’ve known the whole time?” “Yeah” you replied and he laughed “Explains why Al has been checking on Jay” you looked up at Jay and he nodded “He does”
Your dad just stood there for a minute so you whispered “Dad?” he looked up and smiled “Congratulations you two. Jay, just be better than me” then turned and walked out.
You stared after him then looked back at Jay “Well that was wild” he laughed “You’re telling me. I thought I was going to die without even getting to finish first” you slapped his chest “You fucking asshole! I would’ve been a wife and widow within a day” he grinned and scooped you up in a bridal carry before closing the door and locking it. “Let’s get changed and go meet our brothers”
Tumblr media
Jay glanced up from his desk when you walked up the stairs. “Do I call you A.D.A. Voight or Mrs Halstead?” Adam asked and you grinned “Either one Ruzek” and winked at him. “Morning Birdie” Hailey greeted and you nodded “Morning”
You reached for his hand “I need my husband for a few” Al leaned up “Take him for a lot sweetie” you laughed and pulled Jay along with you into your dad’s office and stopped at the door to knock.
Your dad looked up and waved you both in “Hey” you looked back at Jay and he gave you a smile, wrapping his arms around you as a means of support for what you had to tell your dad. Justin and Al knew. “Um dad, I have something I wanted to tell you” you started and your dad sat up straighter “Yeah?”
Jay smiled as you pulled the ultrasound photo out of your pocket and handed it to your dad. “You’re going to be a grandfather” He looked from the photo to you and Jay then back to the photo “I don’t deserve the title of grandfather”
You looked back at Jay who took that as his cue to speak “Your daughter is the most amazing woman I have ever met Hank. She’s been through hell and has come out on the other side. She doesn’t want this shit to carry on to our children. We can see you’ve been trying so we’re going to continue letting you. Al will be papa but you will be grandpa” he nodded and stood up then looked between you both “Can I hug you Birdie?” you nodded and stepped out of Jay’s arms to hug your dad.
“Thank you for loving her like she deserves Jay” your dad told Jay once you were back wrapped safely in your husband’s arms. Jay smiled “It was the easier thing I’ve ever done”

Strike Out | Luke Hughes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: a series of events that lead to Nico finding out about your boyfriend, the newest edition of the New Jersey Devils no less.
request: yes/no
warnings: sexual scenes, p in v, swearing.
word count: 1.46k
authors note: this is more plot than smut (less than 600 words are smut) and I really liked this one. The prompt Luke with Nico’s sister gave me many options yet this was one I’m happy I took.
Tumblr media
Luke knew he was playing a dangerous game.
Not only you the total it girl at NYU with men double taking you whenever walked past. But you were also his captains younger sister.
Nico and Jack had both given him warnings about you when Luke first joined the team at the end of last season. Yet the moment Luke locked eyes with you all of those warnings were out of the window.
You were the girl of his dream for lack of a better phrase. You had the banter, the personality, but most of all you got on with Jack. And of course you knew how to wrap Luke around your little finger.
So when it took you less than three weeks to get the boy into your bed Luke finally realised what Jack meant by you were trouble.
It wasn’t in the sense of you were twisted with the cops but rather that you were addictive. Someone so far out of anyone’s league that people weren’t sure if you were real.
That’s what you were, an enigma to everyone but Luke.
Or at least that’s what he liked to say as he stuck into your dorm because somehow it was safer in there than it would have been if you were in the apartment with Jack.
As much as Luke knew he shouldn’t stay in your dorm as it meant you two were awkwardly on top of each other due to the weird size that dorm bed were. He could never help it as he got to see you in his old band tees that you had stolen from his closet during one of the many trips you had taken to Jersey.
Nico and Jack at this point were either choosing to ignore what was clearly going on or they genuinely couldn’t see it.
But that meant you and Luke were feeling more adventurous than you had before.
Constantly pushing the boundaries being less careful than before as you were now even spending nights in the Hughes apartment.
As your life360 began to have these spurs where it randomly turned off only to be turned on when you were minutes away from Nico’s apartment. You seemed to feel this thrill as your brothers phone calls came in wondering why your location had gone off.
Dawson made the mistake of walking into the Hughes apartment one day when Jack was running late making him the first and only one to have seen it.
You had been straddling Luke’s lap when the Mercer boy walked in “Hughesy I didn’t know you had - y/n!” The boy clutched his chest in surprise as you locked eyes with him.
Some would have called this, strike one.
After all of the threats that Nico gave the boys Dawson was surprise that it only took him this long to get with you.
Luke was quick to place you next to him and before either one of you could beg for his silence Jack was home “oh I didn’t know you were going to be here y/n.” Swollen lips and messy hair didn’t seem to be picked up by the older Hughes boy as he flashed you a friendly smile “you want to stay for lunch?” He added letting you and Luke know that you were in the clear with him.
The younger Hughes boy frowned as you got up “I’m actually meeting Nico for lunch.“ You explained sending Luke a wink “I’ll see you soon Hughesy.” His nickname rolled off of your tongue as you left the apartment “I didn’t know that you two were friends.” Jack had to say that you and Luke were not a pairing he thought he’d ever see.
Next you seemed to grow ballsier than ever.
After a successful preseason the entire team were at Nico’s apartment for a celebration party.
Of course your brother sent you an invite as you were spending that weekend in New Jersey.
Much to Nico’s dismay you were hidden from your brothers side for most of the night.
Primarily because you were a bit too focused on a certain Hughes boy “baby you’re going to have to keep quiet.” Luke raised his finger to your lips as you rode his cock.
Your eyes fluttered as your nails raked up his chest “you’re so good for me.” You groaned as his finger rubbed against your clit “y/n you there?” The knock at the door made Luke wrap his lips around your breast in an attempt to suppress his own moans.
Say it with me now, strike two.
You’re chewed at the inside of your cheek “little busy.” You whined making the mental note to kill Luke later.
The boy smirked from beneath you as your hands locked into his hair “Jack is just looking for Luke and he said he saw you with him last.” That almost felt like strike two in the now game of baseball that you had Luke had found yourselves in.
Nico groaned as you remained silent “I sort of wanted an answer from you kid.” It made you roll your eyes as Luke squeezed your ass “I’ll help you find him in a sec.” Your head fell back when Luke’s lips grazed over your collarbone.
You grumbled “I would have liked if you could do it now.” You were grateful that the door was locked because Nico would have opened it by now.
If Luke hadn’t been bringing you close to an orgasm you would have killed your brother “Nico give me a minute.” You were dangling closer to hitting the older boy “okay jesus I’ll see you in the kitchen.” When Nico finally left Luke was able to go back to what he was doing beforehand.
He watched as your lips pursed “I’m gonna come Luke.” You cried making the boy beneath you capture your lips in a kiss.
It was hot as he held your hips against his “where are you going?” Luke complained as you got off of him before he had the chance to do as much as cuddle you reached for your dress “remember Nico?” You spoke in a duh tone shaking your head.
The red dress wasn’t doing a lot for your body “maybe you should find something else.” Luke mumbled seeing the bruises already forming on your collarbone “maybe you should get dressed before our brothers realise that we’re both in here?” You proposed realising that he was right.
The Hughes boy pulled you back by your hand “you’re so hot when you’re bossy.” Luke mumbled pecking your lips.
Finally and by far you’re most stupid of all moments.
Otherwise known as the time that Nico finally caught on.
It was when Luke had scored his first goal of the regular season and you couldn’t help but praise him tonight.
Naturally you in the crowd as it was in New York but as you ran past the crowd of family and friends of the Islander players you were trying to find Luke.
It shouldn’t have been a hard challenge given his height but still there you were trying and failing to find him “there you are!” His voice came from behind you.
He wrapped his arms around your torso so by the time you had spun around you were now facing him “hey.” You smiled looking up at him.
His hands comfortably found their way to your cheeks making Luke grateful that he had taken his gloves off moments before “what are you doing?” You mumbled trying to see what he was getting at as you could hear your brothers laughs echo off of the walls.
Luke ran his thumb over your lower lip “he is so busy talking to Jack that neither one of them is going to notice a thing.” The Hughes boys words made you feel at ease “bout time I congratulate you on that goal then?” You smiled as he nodded dropping his head to yours.
The two of you forgot how good it felt having his lips on yours as you two had been so busy recently that the idea of hanging out was simply out of the question “what the fuck is this?” A loud voice pulled you two back to reality.
Strike three, you should have been out.
Your eyes went wide as you saw the irritated Nico in front of you “look Luke I might not be good at these things but-” your ramble was cut short as Luke matched your expression “run?” He asked slowly repositioning you to block your brothers attempt at running after him.
Part of you wanted to do more as Nico cut in “I’m going to kill you Hughes.” The captain saw you as his little baby who needed to be protected at all times, even if that was from Luke Hughes.
“definitely run.”

MEDDLE ABOUT — NICO HISCHIER
nico hischier x fem!reader
summary: in which Nico hooks up with the girl he can’t stop thinking about… his teammates best friend.
warnings: NSFW!!, oral (f receiving), p in v, captain kink, praise, not proofread.
notes: LOOSELY inspired by Meddle About by Chase Atlantic. i mean extremely loosely. like, you’d only know it’s inspired by it if you know the lyrics to the song pretty well. (7k words)
Tumblr media
when i agreed to visit John for a couple days, i knew it meant meeting his teammates.
that was the deal; i fly to Jersey, John picks me up, and we go to a bar with a few of his teammates.
the guys were sweet. lovably stupid, but they were hockey players so i wasn’t expecting much different.
i had met Jack first, who was already waiting for us at the bar. he was nice, telling me stories of everything i’ve missed while John is away from me, and he was funny in a blunt way. but most importantly, i could tell he cared for my best friend, so i took to him well.
then was Dawson, who showed up merely a couple minutes after the agreed upon meeting time, yet still profusely apologized for being ‘late’. his smile was contagious, his demeanor reminding me of a golden retriever, and he had greeted me with a hug; treating me as if i was just one of the guys.
and then there was Nico.
the quoted ‘most responsible’ of the group had burst into the bar nearly forty-five minutes late, citing his reasoning as having decided to take a nap but his alarm never went off because his phone decided to restart. his eyes were still noticeably a bit bleary with sleep, and his voice was deep and scratchy, still warming up from lack of use during his nap. his accent was thick, and at first, i honestly couldn’t be sure what he was saying, but the boys had obviously been around him enough to get used to the accent, nodding along to his words and reassuring him that it was all good.
then he turned to me, and i could’ve sworn i could melt right then and there. big brown eyes that captivated me, staring straight into mine. well-groomed stubble graced his jaw, and my personal weakness; thick, pronounced eyebrows to top it all off.
i had seen him on my tv screen, any time i watched one of John’s games, but he was so much more attractive in person.
“Cap, this is my best friend since high school, y/n.” John grins, slinging an arm around my shoulder. Nico’s eyes flicker over to John before settling back on me, a smile spreading on his lips. “y/n, this is our captain.”
“well, hi captain.” i tease, outstretching my hand. a red flush paints across his face and he takes my hand in his.
“you can just call me Nico.” he chuckles, shaking my hand. “sorry again that i’m late.”
“no worries, Nico. these three have been very good company.” i assure him.
“i’m gonna go grab a beer.” he announces. my eyes dart to my now empty beer bottle and i stand from my seat.
“i’ll join you.” i tell him. “i need another.”
i follow behind him at a safe distance, navigating my way through the slightly crowded bar, but when Nico glances back and sees me struggling to push through a group of drunken men, his hand finds mine, pulling me with him.
“oh-” i let out a squeak of surprise at his gentle grip, and he squeezes my hand lightly. “thank you.”
we reach the bar and our hands drop, mine now gripping the edge of the wooden counter.
“no problem.” he shrugs, facing me as we wait for our turn with the bartender. “so, you’ve known John since high school?”
“i was a ninth grader in tenth grade algebra.” i nod. “he tore into the teacher for making me cry after i got dress coded on the second day for my shirt being too low cut.
“John insisted that it was misogynistic. he came to school the next day wearing a t-shirt that he had cut down into a low cut v-neck and then proceeded to rant about how much of a double standard it was that the teacher didn’t dress code him for it but dress coded me.”
Nico grins softly as i look over the crowd at John, a faint smile playing on my lips.
“sounds like him.” he chuckles. “always looking out for people.”
“he has a big heart.” i nod, turning back towards him. “he says i’m part of his ‘personal team’. i’m not sure what exactly that means, but i know it means he looks out for me. i’m really grateful for him.”
“sorry we kinda stole him from you.” Nico cringes but i laugh, shaking my head.
“nah. he was bound to go somewhere, i’m just glad it was here.” i look back at John, watching him laugh at something Jack said. “he’s happy here.”
“so are you guys…” Nico trails off, and my head whips around, eyes wide and my lips parted. i know exactly what he’s insinuating, it’s the same thing everyone thinks when they meet John and i together.
“no.” i shake my head abruptly. “never. he’s like my brother.”
“oh, okay.” his eyes scan my face, and when i turn to look at the bartender as she approaches, i can see him out of the corner of my eye, his eyes trailing down my body.
i smirk as he bites his lip, while i order two beers from the bartender.
“so, you’re… how old? twenty-six?” he questions.
“twenty-four.” i correct him. “i’m a year younger than John and i haven’t had my birthday yet.”
“so we’re the same age.” he nudges my shoulder with his, grinning down at me.
“for about another week, yeah.” i tease.
the bartender returns with our beers and Nico hands her cash, covering he and i’s drinks before i can get my card out.
“you didn’t have to do that.”
he shrugs before winking at me. “consider it an early birthday gift.”
“wow, a $5 beer! how lucky am i?” we laugh as we make our way back to the other three guys, Nico’s hand finding mine again amongst the crowd.
“y/n, there’s a surprise coming on the juke box.” John smiles, his missing tooth on full display.
“oh Johnny, did you lose your fake again?” i sigh, setting my beer on the table.
it’s an often occurrence that he takes the fake tooth out when he gets tipsy, losing it most times.
i ready myself to have to drop to the ground and find it, but he shakes his head, patting his pocket.
“nope! right here!” he grins, his chest puffing with pride. “ya proud of me?”
i giggle, patting his shoulder. “i am, Johnny. look at you, being responsible.”
the guys laugh, chirping him for the coddling that comes from me, but he waves them off.
we sit around at the table, the guys telling me all sorts of stupid stories from pre-games and even post-game celebrations.
i laugh as Jack tells me that his brother was supposed to come, but ended up staying home to watch a movie, and i defend Luke’s choice, saying that sometimes you just need some alone time.
it’s about twenty minutes later that a song starts playing throughout the bar, and my eyes meet John’s, who smirks at a job well done.
“oh Johnny, dance with me!” i hop up from my seat, stumbling slightly but Nico steadies me from his spot beside me.
“hell no.” John laughs, shaking his head.
“pretty please!” i plead, rounding the table and laying my hands on his shoulder. i give him the best puppy eyes i can manage, my lashes fluttering. “i’ll be your best friend!”
“you already are my best friend.” he cackles, shooing me away. “there’s no chance that i’m dancing in a bar not even meant for dancing.”
i pout, lightly kicking his shin, to which he just rolls his eyes and shoos me away.
“i’ll dance with you, y/n.” the thick accent that reaches my ears has me swiveling around to face Nico.
“you will?” i ask excitedly.
he nods, rising from his seat and holding out his hand to me. i grasp it in mine, pulling him towards an empty spot not far from the table. whilst doing so, i turn my head to look over my shoulder, sticking my tongue out at my best friend.
“go cap!” Dawson calls out, and Nico’s face flushes red as he holds onto my hips. my body is pulled against him, my hips grinding against his to the beat of the song.
“keep it PG-13, you two!” John levels me warning glare, his brows raised to show me he means it, but i wave my hand at him dismissively.
“he’s just boring, don’t listen to him.” i call out to Nico over my shoulder, and he lets out a strained hum in agreement.
i can feel him hardening against me as my hips sway along his crotch, but all i do is smirk, slowing down my pace in order to make it a little more sensual.
i look over at the table to find the guys attention no longer on us, instead joking amongst themselves once again. glancing over my shoulder, i look up at the Devils captain, an innocent expression drawn across my face.
“how am i doing, cap?” i whisper and his heavy lidded eyes find mine.
“doing great, schatzi.” his words are whispered in my ear, his hot breath fanning across my neck and sending a shiver down my spine.
i make a mental note to try and google translate the nickname when i get back to John’s tonight, but lord knows if i’ll remember.
the song ends and a new one begins, this one less sexual and more of a love song.
i twist in Nico’s grasp, facing him and resting my arm up on his shoulder, my hand toying with the hair at the nape of his neck. our bodies sway a little, back and forth.
“you’re pretty good looking, for a hockey player.” i hum, and he chuckles, his grip tightening on my hips.
“is that a compliment?” he teases.
“mhm. you even have all your teeth… from what i can tell.” he laughs again, nodding softly.
“i do.”
“pretty sexy.” i shrug.
“well, that’s a pretty low standard of sexy.”
“i’m an easy girl to please.” i wink up at him before untangling myself from his touch, walking back to the table with a new bounce in my step and a sway in my hips.
“you have fun out there?” Jack wiggles his eyebrows as i sit, and i glance over to make sure John isn’t listening before i reply.
“your captain- he’s single?”
Jack’s head tips back in laughter and i blush in embarrassment.
“yeah, he’s single. too focused on hockey for a girlfriend.” he finally responds before his lips press shut. my brows furrow for a second before Nico settles back down in his spot beside me.
“what are we talking about?” Nico raises his beer bottle to his lips, raising a brow at the hush that fell at his arrival.
“hockey!” Jack exclaims at the same time as i say “music!”
“hockey music!” Jack tries to drunkenly cover and i let my forehead fall into my hand at his stupidity.
“…hockey music?” Nico questions suspiciously, his eyes darting between Jack and i.
“big thing in Canada.” Jack nods. “you wouldn’t know, being from Switzerland and all.”
“…right.” Nico nods, and Jack throws me a horribly hidden thumbs up, but anyone who isn’t as drunk as Jack is can tell that Nico didn’t buy the lie for a second.
“y/n!” i turn at the sound of my name, finding John staring at me in waiting. “you ready to go? i need a shower.”
it’s then that i notice the new stain of beer all along his chest, his shirt sticking to his skin, and i laugh.
“yeah, let’s go, Johnny.” we bid goodbye to the guys, assuring them that we’ll see them tomorrow at the game, before we head out of the bar.
i send one last fleeting glance over my shoulder to Nico, his head tipped back in laughter and his hand clutched over his chest at something Dawson said.
“ya know, he’s not interested in a girlfriend.” John mutters on the walk to the car, simultaneously pulling his keys from his pocket and handing them over to me.
“what?” i feign innocence, helping him into the passengers seat. his six beers compared to my two that i had been nursing all night really took a toll on him.
“i just don’t want you to get hurt, rosie.” he pinches at my cheeks as i buckle his seatbelt and i roll my eyes at the nickname that’s stuck since high school.
John always did find it hilarious that i, as a 14 year old girl, always blushed when any older guys talked to me. including him, before we got so close.
“i’ll be okay, Johnny.” i assure him, closing the door and rounding the car.
it’s silent as i buckle up and start the car.
“as long as you know what you’re doing.” John holds his hand out and i take it in mine, allowing him to press a kiss to the back of it. “you’re my best friend, i just don’t want you to expect more from Nico and then get upset when he doesn’t give it.”
“John,” i sigh, pulling my hand away so i can put both on the steering wheel, starting en route to his apartment. “i’m not in the market for a boyfriend. especially not a long distance one. i’m just.. having fun.”
he nods in understanding and one corner of his mouth pulls up slightly. “yeah, me too. i like fun.”
i bark out a laugh, hitting his arm jokingly. “yeah, i know you do. mr. ‘if i leave with a girl tonight, can you stay at Jack’s?’”
he huffs at my interpretation of his voice.
“i love you, but i’m not letting you cock-block me.” he shrugs, crossing his arms.
“well, look at you now. getting home drunk, with beer down your shirt, and no pussy.” i joke, parking the car in the spot for his apartment and turning it off.
“hey, i came home with pussy.” he defends, gaping at me in mock offense.
“none that you’re getting.”
***
it’s sunday evening, the day before i leave.
the guys won their game last night, 6-2, but alas, i got too drunk with Dawson’s girlfriend, Ryleigh, to end up going out celebrating with them.
but Jack, Luke, Dawson, Ryleigh, Nico, and John were gracious enough to agree to a 2nd celebration tonight, so that i could experience a Devils win celly before i have to return home to Massachusetts.
i stare in the mirror at the little black dress that adorns my body, holding up two pairs of shoes, attempting to decide between comfort and style.
John walks past the open bathroom door, glancing over as he walks past before backing up and staring. his eyes squint and his lips purse before he makes a decision.
“the heels.” he tells me. “but bring the flats in your purse, so you can change when your feet start to hurt.”
i nod, looking over at him with a smile. “this is why you’re the harvard graduate.”
he laughs, shaking his head as he walks away, and i follow behind him to the kitchen grabbing my purse and sticking my flats inside.
“i’m warning you now, you might need to find somewhere else to sleep tonight. or else you may not get much.” John winks and i roll my eyes, but my smile sticks to my face.
“sure.” i retort. “i predict that this’ll go just like friday night and i’ll be helping you stumble through that door by midnight.”
my head nods over to the front door and his cheeks turn red at the reminder.
“not happening.” his head shakes as he grabs a water from the fridge. “i’m staying hydrated and i’m limiting myself to two beers.”
“i’m sure you are, Johnny.”
he crinkles his nose at my response before heading towards the door. “c’mon or we’ll be late.”
i rush behind him, half hopping as i pull my heels on my feet.
“slow down, i have heels on.” i whine but he just laughs.
“and little legs.” he snickers, earning a smack on the back for his comment. “ow! okay, sorry! jeez, you ever thought of playing baseball with an arm like that?”
“i’ll leave the sports playing to you. i’m good on the reporting side.”
John points towards our uber as we step outside the apartment building, pushing me towards it with a hand on my mid-back. he opens the car door and motions for me to slide in first before he joins me in the back seat.
the car ride is relatively fast, and just how i like it; quiet. our driver doesn’t attempt any small talk and John and i sit on our phones, occasionally showing each other a meme and making the other let out a silent puff of laughter. the driver bids us goodbye when we arrive to the club, and John walks straight up to the bouncer, telling him our names and allowing him to check the list to see that we indeed have a table rented.
Dawson, Ryleigh, and Nico are already there when we arrive, nursing beers. the two guys are discussing a bad play that occurred at last nights game, Ryleigh sitting idly beside her boyfriend with her chin in her hand and a mildly bored expression, but much to her delight, they drop the discussion when we arrive.
Dawson hops up from his seat, dapping up John before greeting me with a hug, Ryleigh pushing him from my arms as soon as he begins to pull away.
“thank god you’re here! i love hockey, i mean, i played it, but there’s only so many times i can hear the words ‘that play could’ve been prevented if…’ before i go insane!” she yells over the loud music, pulling me away from the table.
“let’s go get drinks!” she shouts and i allow her to lead me toward the bar, looking over my shoulder to find the guys sitting at the table, back to discussing last nights game.
Ryleigh and i push our way through the crowd of sweaty dancing bodies, stopping at the bar, and rather than waiting politely like Nico and i did at the bar, she waves down the bartender immediately.
“a martini, please!” she tells him, the attention immediately draws to me after she orders and my mind is left blank.
“uh, a tequila sunrise and a beer please. corona.” i sputter off the first things that come to mind and the bartender nods, setting off to make our drinks.
“two drinks?” Ryleigh questions.
“the beer is for John.” i clarify and she nods.
“so what’s up with you two anyways? are you like, together?”
“no. just friends since high school!” a look of realization settles across her face before her lips pull into a smirk.
“oh okay, that explains why Dawson was teasing Nico earlier.” i bite my lip at the mention of the swiss man that sits across the club.
“what do you mean? what was he teasing him about?”
“you.” she wiggles her eyebrows, but then turns to give a nasty glare as a drunken man stumbles into her back, pushing her into me. she spins back to me with a smile, after successfully making the man cower with just a look. “he was asking Nico if he was gonna take his chance with you. i thought it was weird, because i definitely thought there was something going on between you and John, but if you guys are just friends then it makes sense. so, are you gonna sleep with the captain tonight?!”
“well-” i’m cut off by the bartender, our drinks being slid in front of us, and Ryleigh tells him to put them on the tab for our table, which is under Jack’s name.
“did you just basically make Jack pay for our drinks?” i laugh as we make our way back through the crowd towards our table.
“he won’t even notice.” she waves dismissively. “now, what were you saying?”
i open my mouth to respond, but we’ve reached the table now, so i just send her an ‘oops’ look as she pouts.
“sweet, that for me?” John cheers, holding his hand out for the beer.
“no, this is for you.” i smile sweetly, holding out the cocktail and making his face drop. the guys laugh and i notice Jack and Luke have joined the table now.
“haha.” John deadpans. “you know i don’t do tequila. or orange juice.”
“yeah, you’re weird.” i crinkle my nose, handing him the corona and sitting down beside him, right across from the man Ryleigh were talking about minutes prior.
he looks so good. his hair is slicked back but not gelled, his facial hair cleanly groomed, and he wears a black button up. i can’t even see the rest of his outfit under the table, but i already know that it would make me instantly wet.
“hello, y/n.” Nico smirks when he sees that he’s caught my eye, his accent like music to my ears.
“hi, captain.” i’m grateful for the dim lighting of the nightclub, hiding the blush that rises to my cheeks upon being caught.
“did you like the game last night?”
“oh, yeah. i had a ton of fun, and you guys played great.” i reply. “it was nice being able to watch a game and not have to take any notes for articles.”
he laughs and butterflies dance in my stomach at the sound.
“maybe you should visit more often then.” he raises an eyebrow and i bite my lip, nodding.
“maybe i should.”
he seems content with my agreement, sitting back in his seat and tuning back into the conversation of the table. but i’m still entranced, watching him take a sip of his beer, his tongue gliding across his lip to retrieve a drop that clung to it.
i feel a nudge to my side and i see John smirking, wiggling his eyebrows as his eyes flick between me and his captain.
“shut up.” i stage-whisper, kicking his shin under the table. his face scrunches in pain, and jaw drops before he mouths ‘soccer’ and i roll my eyes.
i turn back around to find Nico watching us with an amused expression, the corners of his mouth tugging up in a smile, and i immediately flush.
“hey Ryleigh, wanna dance?” the blonde grins at my words, nodding excessively and untangling herself from Dawson’s arms.
she waits at the end of the table for me to meet her, locking arms with me when i do so, and we make our way to the dance floor, not too far from the table.
we sing along to the song with smiles on our faces, bouncing our bodies. this continues for a few songs before she holds my hand in the air as i lower my body slowly, grinding my hips in the air as i drop and then bounce back up.
my line of sight gravitates towards the table, locking eyes with a smirking Nico, who’s already watching me. i keep the eye contact as i grind my hips against the air, running a hand through my hair then letting it slide down my body. feeling confident, i send him a wink before i turn back to Ryleigh.
it’s not but a moment later that she grins, wiggling her eyebrows before quickly excusing herself to the table, and i’m left confused until i feel hands rest upon my hips, a body pressing against my back.
“were you a dancer at one point? or are your hips just naturally this fucking entrancing?” the swiss accent is whispered into my ear, his stubble scratching against the side of my neck, causing a delicious sensation to run down my body.
“guess it’s all natural.” my neck cranes to look back at Nico, making a point to wiggle my hips against him.
he groans, pulling my body closer to his, and i’m just about ready to let him have his way right then and there, on the dance floor where everyone can see.
“you gonna take me home with you tonight? or are you gonna let your chance slip away again?” i’m barely audible over the loud music, but i know he’s heard me when he smirks once again, his hands gripping my hips a little tighter.
“you know i’m not looking for anything serious. right, schatzi?” there’s that nickname again, and though i can’t guarantee, i know it means something good.
“and what makes you think i am?” i hum.
he chuckles lowly, his hand leaving my waist in order to tangle with mine. he doesn’t speak, rather pulling me back towards the table.
my mood deflates, believing that he’s decided i’m not worth it, but i’m mistaken when he holds out my purse, raising an eyebrow when i don’t take it right away.
“have you changed you mind?” he questions and i snatch the bag from his grasp, letting him lead me away.
i wave a goodbye to the table, who’s now chirping us, Dawson wolf-whistling and Jack calling out a ‘get it, Neeks!’. John is shaking is head, but his smile provides me with the comfort of knowing that he’s not actually bothered by me hooking up with his teammate.
i learn that Nico’s apartment is a mere ten minute walk from the club, and all ten minutes are spent in the quiet sexual tension that reverberates between us.
it’s not until the elevator doors close, that his lips crash upon mine; his hands on my cheeks, and his body presses flush against me, no space left between us. my spine arches, my upper back coming in contact with the elevator wall, but he just pushes me back further, our lips moving in sync.
the kiss is sloppy, our tongues exploring the others mouths and our hands tangled in each others hair, but it’s cut off quicker than i’d have liked by the doors opening.
he pulls away rather hesitantly, leading me down the hall and hastily unlocking his apartment door. he steps in first, holding the door open for me, and i follow after him.
i don’t get much of a chance to scan my surroundings before his lips are back on mine. my body being caged against the now-shut door. my teeth graze his bottom lip, his hands gripping my waist tightly. his kisses trail away from my mouth, now littering down my jawline and onto my neck.
my breathing is heavy as his tongue flicks across my pulse-point, his hands sliding lower to grab my ass under my dress, and i gasp as he nips at my neck, soothing the sting with a kiss.
my hips grind up to meet his but he steps back, his eyes meeting mine. his lips are swollen, and tinted with my red lipstick, and wicked smile on his face as he begins to lower himself to his knees. my hands drop with him, my purse hitting the floor with a thud, and his fingertips lightly graze down my thighs before pushing the hem of my dress up.
“is this okay?” my heart beats faster at his question, my head nodding in approval, and he accepts my consent, pushing my dress even further up my torso. “hold this.”
i obey his instructions, the satin fabric cool in my trembling hands. he knocks me off balance when he pulls one of my legs up, my thigh now resting on his shoulder, and if i hadn’t already been leaning against the door, i surely would have fallen.
his eyes keep contact with mine, peppering kisses up my thigh until he reaches my core. his tongue darts out to lick me through the lace of my thong, and a moan pours out of my lips, my eyes closing and my head dropping back against the door. my hands tangle into his hair, both to steady my balance, and to ready myself for him.
his hot breath fans over my pussy as he licks once more, and i’m unable to stop myself from grinding against his tongue, making him chuckle as he pulls back. i whine at the loss of contact, my eyes flying open, and i look back down just in time to watch him pull my panties to the side. his eyes flick back up to mine and i whimper when he makes direct contact with my throbbing clit.
his tongue swirls around it and i cry out in pleasure, squeezing my eyes shut.
“Nico.” his name falls from my lips like a prayer, and he pulls back making me pout.
“don’t go calling me by my name now.” my mind is fuzzy, my body alight with pleasure, and i wrack my brain to understand his meaning until it hits me.
i’ve been calling him ‘captain’.
“yes, captain.” i whisper, my voice sultry as i use the leg that’s hooked over his shoulder to nudge him back towards me.
he chuckles lowly at my neediness, but resumes his assault against my clit, flicking over it before dragging his tongue down to my entrance. he licks me like it’s his last meal, spreading my wetness around the area before and letting his nose bump against the bundle of nerves.
i shudder, my hands tugging against his hair while simultaneously pushing him deeper, and he moans against me, sending the vibrations straight into my core.
“captain.” my voice catches in my throat, i can feel myself getting closer to my orgasm the longer he continues, and when he sucks my clit between his lips, rolling it as his fingers prod at my entrance, i know i won’t last much longer. “i’m so close!”
he slips two fingers in, curling them and making me groan at the feeling of fullness. his tongue works against my clit as his fingers pump in and out, building that familiar feeling in my stomach, my hips stuttering against him.
“right there!” i squeak out as his fingers brush against just the right spot, and he takes the initiative to hit that spot a few more times, his pace speeding up. “oh god- i’m gonna come!”
with just a few more licks against my clit and the feeling of his fingers against my g-spot, my legs shake, my knees beginning to buckle as i release all over his hand and tongue.
he pulls away, rising to his feet and smirking at the sound that leaves my lips from the feeling of emptiness where his fingers once were. his hands now hold my hips to keep me upright, his chin and lips glistening with my cum, and i bite my lip at the sight.
“you taste so good, beautiful.” i’m sure that if my pussy wasn’t already throbbing, it would’ve started at those words.
his hand comes up to cup the back of my neck, pulling me in for a kiss. i can taste my arrival on his tongue and lips, causing me to moan into the kiss.
he pulls back, his hand lacing in mine as he pulls me towards his bedroom, and it’s then that it sinks in.
i just got tongue fucked against a door.
i giggle at the realization, making him look back at me with furrowed eyebrows and a smile.
“we only met each other just the other day, but god, the way you make me feel.” he grunts out, as we enter his bedroom, turning us so i walk backwards, the backs of my knees hitting the edge of his bed.
“you’ve got me feeling some type of way too.” i smirk, pulling his lips back down to mine. his lips part and i slip my tongue past them, pushing against his own.
“i’ve never come that fast.” i whisper against his lips. “it was surreal.”
“i’ve never gotten down on my knees like that for a girl.” he chuckles. “always kinda thought that was a figure of speech when it came to guys, but when i had you there, it’s like it came naturally for me to just kneel down and fuck you with my tongue.”
i pull away with wide eyes.
“are you telling me that was your first time giving oral?” i gape and his head tips back in laughter.
“no! did it feel like it was?”
“definitely not.” my cheeks turn red and his hand cups my face, his thumb trailing over my blush.
“i’ve obviously given oral, just never in that position.” he clarifies. “it’s always been in bed, or the one time on the couch.”
i laugh at his scrunched nose.
“that one wasn’t extremely comfortable.” he confesses, his head tilting.
“i can imagine.” i joke before pulling his head back down for another kiss, tired of the small talk.
he sucks at my bottom lip, his hand sliding around my head to tug at my hair, pulling my head back.
“tell me what you’re thinking.” he whispers, his voice low and raspy. “tell me what you want.”
my eyes flutter, rolling back in my head at his demanding tone.
“i wanna ride you.” i confess breathily.
his touch disappears as he steps back, my eyes shooting open to watch as his hands magnetize to his belt, unbuckling it and pulling it from his pants. his shirt is next, unbuttoning it and allowing it to fall open, giving me the chance to admire his wonderfully sculpted abs. he pulls the shirt from his body before he unbuttons his pants, his eyes watching me as mine watch him get naked, widening slightly when he pulls his pants and boxers down.
his erection springs free from the confinement of his pants, the tip red and already leaking pre-cum. my tongue drags across my bottom lip, but he shoots me a warning look, reminding me that i can’t suck him off if i want him inside of me. and oh how badly i want that.
Nico walks around me, rounding the bed and searching in his nightstand before his hand reappears with a foil packet, the dim lighting of his bedside lamp glinting off of it. i watch silently as he sits in the middle of the bed, gnawing at my lip as he tears open the foil, rolling the condom on with a groan.
his eyes stare me down, his brows raising in waiting.
“i wanna see you undress now.” he tells me, shaking me out of my trance.
my hands tremble as i slip the straps of my dress off my shoulders, pulling my arms out and letting the satin dress glide off my body into a pool of fabric on the floor. i kick my heels off next, letting them fall to the wood and tangle in my dress, before lastly bending over to pull my my thong down my legs, stepping out of it and dropping it to the floor to join my other items.
“you’re so fucking sexy.” his praise gives me a boost of confidence, my spine straightening. “come here and then turn around.”
his finger curls, drawing me towards him, and i crawl up the bed to straddle his waist.
“i said turn around.” he reminds me, his hand coming up to tuck a lock of hair behind my ear.
i nod, turning myself around so my back faces him, looking over my shoulder to find his eyes glued to my ass. i smirk in amusement, rolling my hips so his dick slides between my wet folds.
“fuck.” he groans, grasping at his base and tapping it against my clit, teasing me a couple times.
“please, captain.” i plead, my head falling forward as my eyes squeeze shut.
the head of his cock lines up with my cunt and i take the initiative to back up onto him, filling myself up with his length. i let out a breathy sigh in contentment as he moans at the feeling of my walls closing around him.
my eyes roll back in my head as i grind onto him, the pleasure wracking my body is intense and i can’t keep myself from crying out as he thrusts his hips up into me.
“that’s it, baby. scream it out.” he grunts, his voice tight. “let my neighbors know how good i’m making you feel.”
i bounce my hips, my hands finding his thighs to best support myself as i do so. his hands grip my waist so tightly that i’m sure there’ll be bruises there tomorrow, but i can’t find it in myself to care, the pleasure overtaking any kind of pain.
the room fills with the sound of his dick pumping in and out of my wet pussy, and the echoes of our moans. my breath shaky as i call out.
“yes, captain!” my words are breathy but loud, and he thrusts up harshly at the nickname. “oh my god!”
he taps my ass, pulling me off with his grasp on my hips, and rising to his knees, leaving me on all fours in front of him, before he slams back into me. my breath hitches, my arms giving out as he speeds up his pace but never relenting in his harsh rhythm.
my upper body presses into the mattress, my jaw dropped open as shaky moans fall from my lips, whimpers escaping every few thrusts when he hits a certain spot, my hands gripping the sheets as i buck my hips back into his.
“feel so fucking good.” he huffs, and i look back to watch his face contort in pleasure, his sweaty hair falling into his eyes. “like you were made for me.”
his hand slides down my spine, making me shiver and arch my back, his dick hitting in just the right spot.
the knot in my stomach winds itself tighter and tighter, like a thousand rubber bands wrapped around a water bottle, just waiting for it to burst. and i know i’m done-for when his free hand circles around to rub my clit, still a bit overstimulated from our previous activities in his apartment entryway.
“holy fuck.” i choke, my pussy clenching around him. his grunt reaches my ears and my legs begin to tremble. “gonna come! please, captain, can i come?”
“go ahead, baby. make a mess on my cock.” he hums, and that’s all it takes for my breath to catch, my face turning red as i reach my second orgasm of the night, burying my face in the sheets to muffle my sobs.
his strokes become sloppy, faster and less rhythmic. “fuck- i’m gonna-”
i nod my head at his choppy words, whispering a few resounding ‘yes’s before he stills, his hips stuttering as a low sound leaving his throat as he releases into the condom.
i squeak as he pulls out of me, pulling me up against his chest before flopping back onto the bed.
“oh my god.” i breathe, listening to him pant, my eyes still screwed shut.
“tell me about it.” he huffs breathlessly, squeezing me to his side.
“like, oh my god.” i emphasize, causing a laugh to push past his lips.
he slips out from the bed, discarding the now used condom in the trash can before disappearing into the en-suite bathroom, coming back with a wet washcloth. he kneels beside me on the bed, cleaning me up before getting back up and throwing the washcloth in the bathroom sink and leaving the bedroom altogether.
my brows thread together in confusion, but i’m much too spent to follow, so i lie in the bed waiting for his return. which ultimately comes as he enters with two water bottles and my phone.
“this was going off in your purse.” he tells me, handing me my phone and a bottle of water.
i thank him as i check the device, finding three missed calls from John and a few texts.

from: Johnny Hockey 🏒♥️
you’re still coming home tonight though, right?
cause sorry to burst your sex bubble, but i’m not packing your shit and dropping by Nico’s at 8am to get you for your flight.
___
i let out a cackle at my best friends choice of words, typing back a response and letting him know i will, indeed, be going back to his apartment.
“John?” Nico guesses correctly, his arm snaking around my waist as i lock my phone.
“yeah.” i nod, allowing him to pull me tighter to his chest. “he wanted to make sure i was still coming back to his apartment to pack my stuff. plus, we have plans to get breakfast before my flight tomorrow and he was making it known that he would not be picking me up from here to do that.”
Nico chuckles. “so you’re leaving now?”
i feign offense, clutching a hand to my heart.
“trying to get rid of me so soon, Nico? right after we meddled about in these very sheets?!” i joke, and he shakes his head.
“nah, i guess you can stay a little bit.” he teases back, rolling his eyes jokingly and making me giggle in response.
“so…” i trail off, looking over at him. “round two?”
“wouldn’t this technically be round three?” he laughs. “you’re insatiable.”
i shrug with a cheeky grin. “just trying to make the most out of this night. i can’t guarantee when i’ll see you next.”
he smirks, hovering over me, his lips trailing kisses down my body, lingering on my tits.
“in that case,” he starts, pausing to let his tongue swirl my peaked nipple, successfully pulling a moan from my lips. “i can think of a few more ways to spend tonight.”
i bite my lip as i smile, one thought screaming in my hazy mind.
tonight will be fun.

“i think the scar looks sexy neeks. although i am sad they had to hurt your beautiful face,” you told your fiancé.
nina snickered as she carried her niece.
rino chuckled at your expression and clapped his son’s shoulder before whispering something in swiss-german.
the hischier family and you were getting ready to have family skate down at met life stadium. this would be saira’s first time on the ice and you were terrified.
“nico. i think i’ll stay home with her and you go with rino and nina,” you voiced, seconds before heading out the door.
nico gesture for his sister and father to continue on whilst he stopped to talk to you. “schätzli, saira is going to be just fine. she’s going to have you and me there, plus there will be lots of other babies!” he reassured.
“and the guys have been dying to see her again,” nico added.
you kissed nico’s cheek and followed him out of the house, meeting up with rino and nina.
nina let her father and brother walk ahead as she grabbed your hand and smiled. “if you want to go out on the ice, i’ll sit on the bench with her,” she prompted.
you smiled sweetly at her and nodded “thank you nina,”
“we hischier girls stick together,” she smiled, pinching her nieces cheeks lightly.
the car ride to the stadium was quiet. you and nina were at the back with saira with rino and nico sitting in front.
as soon as you rocked up to the locker room, the boys cheered. they got up, half dressed, in order to meet you and your daughter.
“isn’t she just adorable,” you gushed.
dawson tickled saira’s tummy causing the little girl to clamp onto her uncles finger. the 20-year-old chuckled at the baby’s strong grip.
saira ended up falling asleep during the family skate as she was strapped up against your chest.
the next day, saira was dressed as a little italian mob daughter. you made sure to take pictures of nico and saira together, with nina offering to take pictures of the whole family.
nico kissed saira’s head before handing her to her babysitter. “i might come home from the game early and let you go soon,” you told the girl.
your neighbour, eloise, smiled “don’t worry mrs hischier, my parents know i’m here so they let me stay until you guys come back. plus, saira is one of the easiest baby’s to look after,” she reassured you.
at the stadium, you were immediately wrapped with a sense of adrenaline. you watched as the boys warmed up and spoke to their partners and families.
you’d even gone to lindy ruff and asked him to allow alex more game time, especially because he’d invited so many members of his family.
nina and rino laughed as you celebrated nico’s goal, jumping up and down. the same reaction for the second goal as well.
you’d even rolled your eyes when luke made a hit on jamie drysdale yelling “that’s pookie on pookie offence!”
whilst you may not have been able to play, you were proud of your boys. saira had changed your life for the better and you were anxious to start next season.

Sitting in the passenger seat, your leg bouncing from the excitement of visiting Disneyland. It has been your dream since you were a child, but your parents were so busy arguing your whole childhood, that they never took you there.
Your childhood wasn’t bad, but neither was good. Your weekends were spent in your room, as you played with your toys, or you were out with your friends.
Now sitting here, twenty-one years old, with your hot ass boyfriend driving you to the Disneyland in Anaheim. His hand resting on your tight, the other one gripping the steering wheel as he hums in the rhythm of the song playing on the radio. You look over at him, a loving smile forming on your lips as you place your hand on his, squeezing it.
“Thank you, Dawson,” you whisper not wanting to interrupt the pleasant silence. Dawson looks over to you, a small smile on his full lips.
“Every time, babes. You deserve the word. And I’ll do everything to give you one.” He brings your entwined hands to his mouth and kisses your every knuckle. Your cheeks redden at his words and action a quiet giggle escaping your lips. “We’re here baby.” He points towards the areal, your eyes catch the sleeping beauty castle. Your eyes light up with excitement as you bounce on the seat slightly, Dawson laughing at your excitement.
He parks the car in the empty parking space killing the engine. Before you can open your doors, he’s holding them open, helping you to get out.
“Here you go, princess.” He bows in front of you with a laugh.
“Idiot.” You giggle, closing the doors behind you. Dawson cages you between the car and his warm hard body.
“But yours baby,” he nuzzles his nose in your neck inhaling deeply. He loves how you smell. The sweet smell of your perfume and your body scent. “Only yours.” His eyes meet yours, his head bending down to connect your lips.
“Okay, let's go! I want to see everything.” You push him away after a while, almost running to buy a ticket. To your surprise, there are not many people waiting in line, so after ten minutes of waiting you and Dawson finally get your chance to buy the tickets. When the lady tells you the price, you pull your card out to pay for it only to be met with Dawson’s mobile on the payment terminal. You pour your lips, frowning at him, but you don’t say anything. With a smile and goodbye, you take the tickets finally walking towards the entrance.
You don’t what to look at first when you get in. There are so many things you want to see, but you know, you don’t have the time to see everything. You intertwine your hand with Dawson’s tugging him to the first thing you want to see. The Sleeping Beauty castle.
After an hour of walking around Disneyland, you’re having a small break to get some food and drink. You’re sitting on a bench in front of Critter Country, waiting for you to get on another attraction the many adventures of Winnie the Pooh. You’re holding a milkshake in your right hand with the left hand, you’re going through your bag to get some napkins out for you two. You look over at Dawson, who’s holding two big hotdogs in his hand, one halfway done as he chews on his bite. You took your hotdog from him, taking a bite by yourself, groaning at the taste.
“Uh, stop it!” Dawson says immediately, looking around. “That sound is only for my ears, love.” He says so seriously.
“I’m sorry, babe.” You giggle swallowing your bite.
“S’Okay, but hurry up, so we get in the house as soon as possible, okay?” Dawson stands up, and stands in front of you, shielding you from the sun. You look up at him your eyes are squinted from the light.
“Thank you.” Your words are muffled by the food in your mouth. Dawson nods his eyes, sipping from his drink.
When you’re done with your food and milkshake, you finally make your way inside the section. You’re currently walking over the human Winnie the Pooh when Dawson lets go of your hand. Not caring you keep looking around you in awe. But when you turn around after a few minutes, Winnie is in front of you, down on one knee, and in one of his hands is a black box. Confused you look around looking for Dawson. Of course when you hear his laugh, from the costume, tears sprung in your eyes.
Dawson takes off the head, a wide smile on his lips as he’s looking up at you, sparkle in his eyes.
“Y/n we’ve been together for five years and not once I doubt your love and mine. I knew the first time I saw you dancing in that bar I knew you would somehow change my life, but I didn’t expect you to change it so much. The night I met you, my life turned from black and white into a spectrum of colors and I’m so glad for it. You taught me how to love myself, and how to be grateful for every win and loss because losing makes me stronger and wiser. Y/N I LOVE YOU MUCH. And as Leo vowed to Paige, ‘I vow to fiercely love you in all your forms, now and forever. I promise to never forget that this is a once-in-a-lifetime love,’.” He stops for a while to take in breath before he finally says the four words. You are already crying like a baby from that speech. Because fuck…you know how much he hates this film even though you love it, and he remembers the phrase. “Will you marry me?” his voice is now shaky, his hands opening the box revealing a silver ring with ruby in the middle of it.
You start nodding your head not trusting your voice. But when he stands up you let out a sob with a laugh. “Yes, yes, yes. I’ll marry you.” You hug him around his neck, pulling as close as it’s possible. Applause interrupts around you, making you two pull away. You laugh at the people watching you, some even filming this. You look at Dawson again, kissing him so passionately he stumbles backward laugh escaping his slips.
“I love you so much,” he whispers on your lips, hugging you tightly in himself. “Wanna try the ring on?” he whispers in your ear pulling away from you slightly.
“Yeah.” You nod your head wiping the tears away. Dawson takes the ring in his hand sliding it on your ring finger, your eyes welling up with tears over again. “I love you, Dawson, so much.” You choke on your sob.
“And I love you, baby. So fucking much!” he dips his head down, kissing you softly with a smile on his lips. “Let’s go enjoy the rest of the trip.” He pulls away looking over to a guy who was probably in the costume before him. He strips from it handing it to the guy thanking him.
The rest of the day, you couldn’t keep your eyes from the ring sitting on your finger, feeling so happy for the man who placed it on.

anti-hero | joel dawson x fem!reader
“i wake up screaming from dreaming one day i’ll watch as you’re leaving and life will lose all its meaning”
after everything that had happened to you over the last 7 years in the literal apocalypse, you’ve developed some serious issues with trust.
“it’s me, hi, i’m the problem, it’s me”
and maybe a few insecurities too. but that could just be your fault.
“at tea time everybody agrees”
so when you and your boyfriend joel go out to the surface to find his ex-girlfriend aimee, the only person left from his old life, you start feeling like, well, a problem.
“i’ll stare directly at the sun, but never in the mirror”
warnings: insecure reader?? idk none really
“it must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero”
you followed behind joel as he walked ahead, looking down at the map your colony had given the two of you.
he was so dead-set on going to find aimee and her colony that you only went with him because you knew there was a chance that if you didn’t, you would never see him again.
but there he was, happy and oblivious as he walked down the overgrown street.
what if he didn’t want you there? what if he just wanted to go alone to get away from you? what if he wanted to leave you behind? what if he still liked aimee? what if-
“y/n?”
you looked up to see joel staring back at you expectantly. he had stopped walking and was now looking back at you.
“hmm?”
“i asked if you’re okay.” he repeated, taking a few steps over to you. “are you?”
“yeah, joel, i’m fine.” you smile at him and he smiles back.
“you sure?” he asked, pushing a bit of hair away from your eyes.
“yes, i’m sure.”
“good.” he pecked your lips before taking your hand in his. “come on.”
he seemed like he still loved you, but what if he was just pretending because you were there and he didn’t want to hurt your feelings? what if he’s just a really good actor?
you tried to push those thoughts from your head. at least for the time being.
Tumblr media
the more your trip had gone on, the worse you felt.
you had major anxiety over the entire situation, and you felt horrible because the closer you got to the beach meant the closer you were to aimee.
and you could not stop thinking about how either of you could die at any moment, even with the help of two strangers you had met.
joel seemed over the moon the closer you got to the beach and he would keep on talking about aimee as you walked.
“you know, she actually got me these pencils.” joel told you as he drew the large frog-like creature the two of you had encountered just a few days earlier into his book.
the dog you had found, boy, was curled up by your leg as you ate.
clyde and minnow, the two strangers who had been helping the two of you survive for the last day or so, were sat on the opposite side of the fire.
“yeah, you mentioned that already, kid.” clyde mumbled, his mouth full of the beans he was eating. “i think your girlfriend’s getting sick of it.”
your head shot up, scaring boy for a moment, while joel’s turned to look at you.
“i’m fine. i don’t know what you’re talking about.” you shrugged it off, even if it were true.
you didn’t need joel to know about your worries or insecurities when it came to aimee.
he just seemed so excited and you felt like maybe you were the one thing that was stopping him from feeling happy.
so instead you focused on the dog in your lap, stroking and playing with boy until your small group had to leave.
as clyde and minnow led, boy running circles around the young girl, joel fell back to walk beside you.
“what’s going on with you?” he asked softly. “you okay?”
you nodded and joel gave you a look.
“i’m fine.” you insisted.
“you know you can talk to me… right?”
his words sounded genuine, and his facial expression was easily readable. he looked concerned.
“yeah, of course.” you put on a smile. “don’t worry, joel.”
Tumblr media
you were no longer with clyde and minnow when you and joel reached the old broken down motel you decided to stay at for the night.
it was storming outside as you, your boyfriend, and your dog ran for shelter.
joel had been extra happy since he had killed one of the monsters and saved boy.
“wow.” joel breathed out, looking at the rain, and you tore your eyes away from him to look out at the sky.
rain was something you had missed from the outside world.
“you know, i haven’t felt the rain in seven years.” joel said to boy and you just kept watching the storm. “pretty cool. pretty cool.”
joel then wrapped his arms around your body and sat his chin on your shoulder. he pressed a short kiss to your neck, and you didn’t move.
your attention was entirely focused on the rain. you had forgotten how much you had loved it.
back when you were a teenager, you used to sit by your window whenever it would storm and just watch the rain, soft music playing from your headphones.
it was your favorite weather.
“how’re you doing?” joel asked quietly and you turned your head a little.
“i’m fine.” you responded, ignoring the few tears that had pricked in your eyes due to all the emotions you had been feeling.
“hello.” a sudden robotic voice spoke from behind you and joel spun around, letting his arms fall from your waist.
joel started walking inside, towards the voice, and you sat down, watching the rain fall.
you could hear some kind of electronic whirring, but didn’t turn your head.
“holy shit. you’re alive.” joel’s voice came from behind you. “i mean… you’re on.”
“i have 51 minutes of power left. what is your name?”
“uh, i’m joel. my name is joel.”
after he introduced himself, you turned your head. boy came and curled himself up on your lap, letting you pet him.
you didn’t listen to what was going on behind you until joel called your name.
“y/n, you gotta come in here.” he chuckled. “it’s… it’s a real mav1s.”
you stood up, being careful not to hurt boy as you did so, and walked inside, sitting beside joel on the springy mattress.
“mav1s, this is my girlfriend, y/n.” joel introduced with a smile.
“hello, y/n.”
“hi.” you mumbled.
“joel, besides conversing with me, for which i am eternally grateful, may i ask what you are doing outside of your colony?”
“yeah, um…”
“did you steal food?” the mav1s’s eyes narrowed.
“no. no, i didn’t steal any food.” joel responded and you couldn’t help but snicker at his tone.
joel looked at you, noticing the fact that he hadn’t heard you laugh in quite a while.
he then looked back at the mav1s. “y/n and i are actually… on a quest. to find a girl. um, an old friend of mine, actually.”
“how lovely! what is her name?”
“uh, aimee. with one i and two e’s.”
you kissed joel’s cheek and walked outside again. you sat on the ground, right on the edge of the concrete so the rain would fall against your head.
Tumblr media
you hadn’t realized just how long you had zoned out for until you heard joel bringing mav1s outside and sitting her on the couch.
“i, uh, i need to pee.” joel picked up his crossbow and started walking away. “i’ll be back.”
was he leaving? oh, my god, was he ditching you?
“is something troubling you, y/n?” mav1s asked as you watched joel walk inside. “you can tell me anything, as i am an empathetic listener.”
you stood up as the rain slowed down and sat beside the mav1s on the old couch.
“also, my memory banks will be permanently erased in 14 minutes.”
you sat quietly for a moment before looking at the robot.
“did joel talk to you about aimee much?”
“only for a moment. he talked to her on his radio. why do you ask?”
“do you think he… likes her?” you asked.
“yes, i do think he likes his friend, as he-”
“no, no. no, mav1s, i meant, like… do you think he has, like, romantic feelings for her?”
“what makes you ask that?”
“before everything that happened, and before he met me in our colony, joel and aimee were together. aimee was his girlfriend before i was.” you sighed and leaned back in your seat. “i just… do you think he’s gonna leave me for her?”
“while he was talking to aimee on his radio, joel spoke very fondly of you.”
“am i crazy to be totally freaking out that joel’s gonna leave me forever?”
“what?” joel asked as he approached you again. you hadn’t even noticed him appear.
you went quiet. “nothing. it doesn’t matter.”
he sat himself beside you. “y/n, i’m never gonna leave you. why would you even think that?”
you looked down at your lap and shrugged. he crouched in front of you to meet your eyes.
you sighed at the confused look on his face. joel was always so clueless.
“aimee.” you answered.
“huh?”
“do you still have feelings for her?”
joel was silent for a moment, staring into your eyes. worry took over your features as you searched his face for some kind of answer to your question.
then a smile grew on joel’s face, which turned into a chuckle.
“what?” you asked and joel shook his head.
“nothing, you’re just funny.”
“joel, i’m being serious. why are you coming all this way for her? do you still have feelings for her?” you stared down at him and he rested his hands on your shoulders.
“y/n, i only have feelings for you. i swear.” his smile had softened as he spoke. “aimee’s someone from my past. yes, i dated her when i was 17, but that’s different now. i only want you. not aimee, not anybody.”
“then why..?”
“she’s my friend, and it’s been like 7 years. i just wanted to see what it’s like out here, and i haven’t seen anyone i knew before all this in over half a decade.”
joel frowned and put a hand on your cheek.
“i guess i just got excited. i forgot to ask if you were even okay with all this.”
a smile tugged on your lips. “it’s fine, joel.”
“i love you, okay?” he told you, his voice honest. “i love you.”
“i love you too.” you whispered out and leant forward to wrap your arms around his neck.
he hugged you tight and pulled you to your feet.
as he held you, he slowly rocked the two of you back and forth.
music slowly started to play, coming from mav1s, and joel smiled before spinning you around.
it was raining more, and joel pulled you out from under the shelter and into the rain.
his hair stuck to his face as he smiled, leaning forward and pecking you on the lips.
“you’re the only one for me, okay? don’t you ever doubt that for a second.” he mumbled into your ear as the two of you danced. “you’re my girl.”
you smiled and lifted your hand from his shoulder to push his hair from his eyes.
the two of you danced in the rain until mav1s’ power ran out and the music abruptly stopped.

Patience Is a Virtue | Luke Hughes
wc: 1.8k
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Part 5 of The Art of Loving series
One and a half weeks. That was the time the Devils were on the road around Canada. Ten days, four cities, and countless hours on buses and in hotel rooms. For most of the team, it was a routine part of the season, a chance to bond, test their stamina, and hopefully stack up some wins. For Luke Hughes, however, it was proving to be a test of patience.
“You're going to burn a hole in your screen if you keep staring at it like that.”
Luke looked up to see Dawson dropping into the seat beside him, a knowing grin on his face. “What are you talking about?” Luke asked, too quickly.
Dawson gestured toward the phone in Luke's hand. “You've been glued to that thing all trip. Don't think we haven't noticed.”
Luke's noise-canceling headphones rested loosely around his neck, his phone still open on Instagram. Specifically, in a post that Avery had shared earlier that day, it was a photo of a new exhibit at the gallery, captioned with her usual humor. He smiled faintly, his thumb hovering over the like button.
“Noticed what?” Jack chimed in from across the aisle, leaning over to get in on the conversation.
“How Luke here is lovesick,” Dawson announced, loud enough for the entire bus to hear.
“I'm not,” Luke muttered, turning his phone off and shoving it into his pocket with more force than necessary.
“Oh, you so are,” Jack teased a mischievous glint in his eyes, not missing the look his brother threw his way. “What? Haven’t you told them about the date you had with Avery?”
Luke groaned and sank lower in his seat, his face rapidly turning different shades of red. “Can you not?” he hissed, glaring at his older brother.
The banter quickly spread through the bus. “Avery? That’s the girl from New York, right?” Nico asked from a few rows up. Did the whole team already know or what?
“Yeah, the art girl,” Dawson confirmed, grinning.
“She’s not just 'the art girl,'” Luke shot back, his voice coming out more defensive than he intended to, feeling his face grow even hotter.
“Oh, so she’s special,” Dawson said
“Trust me she’s more than special,” Jack said. Here we go, Luke thought to himself.
The team erupted into laughter, and the teasing only escalated as they approached the hotel. Even Ondřej, usually the voice of reason, joined in. “Kid, you should’ve seen how nervous you were when she came to that game,” he said with a grin. “You could barely stand on your feet,” he laughed.
“Yeah, Luke,” Jack continued, smirking. “All that talk about her, and then you couldn't even string a sentence together when she was actually there.”
“You should’ve seen his face when we interrupted them at the lounge,” he turned to the rest of the guys, “If looks could kill I wouldn’t be here right now,” he said while laughing.
Luke rolled his eyes, though he couldn’t suppress the small smile tugging at his lips. “You’re all hilarious,” he said dryly.
“Come on, admit it,” Dawson said. “She’s got you completely whipped.”
Luke shook his head, trying to play it cool as the team’s laughter rang around him. But as the bus came to a stop outside the hotel, his thoughts drifted back to the person this whole thing was about.
As the team filed off the bus and into the lobby, Luke stayed a few steps behind pulling out his phone. His chat with Avery was already open, her most recent text catching his eye.
How’s Canada treating you?
Luke smiled faintly as he typed out a reply.
Road trips are exhausting but I’m managing. Lots of time on the bus, but at least the team keeps it somewhat interesting.
Avery’s response came almost immediately.
I bet. Must be a lot of Jack teasing you, huh?
Luke shook his head, smirking as he leaned against the wall of the hotel lobby.
More like the entire team. I might need a new seat on the bus.
Poor Luke, she teased. Good luck in today’s game, by the way. I’ll be watching.
Luke’s heart skipped a beat at her words. It wasn’t just that she’d be watching, it was that she cared enough to try. She didn’t grow up around hockey which meant the game probably still felt foreign to her. Yet she still made the effort.
He could picture her now, tuning into the game from her apartment, the slight frown she made when she focused, probably trying her best to understand the rules and follow the game.
Thanks. I’ll try to make it worth watching.
Her reply came more quickly than he anticipated.
You always do.
Luke stared at her message for a long moment, a warm feeling spreading through him.
And then there was the thought that maybe, just maybe, she wasn't watching hockey for the game itself, but for him. That thought, as much as he tried to push it aside, left him feeling equal parts thrilled and nervous.
“See! That’s what we were talking about.” Dawson’s voice boomed through the lobby, snapping him out of his thoughts.
With a roll of his eyes, he placed his phone in his pocket and headed toward the elevator, his teammates’ laughter still audible in the background.
Tonight’s game was just another stop on their road trip, but knowing Avery was watching made it feel like something more.
When the game ended with a 3-0 win against the Oilers, the place was buzzing with energy. Hooting and hollering could be heard from outside of the locker room as the team relished in their shutout victory. Luke, fresh from his post-game shower, was still riding the high of the win, but his thoughts wandered elsewhere.
As he pulled his phone out of his bag, he noticed a notification, a text from Avery.
Congrats on another win! I think I even managed to follow most of it. That save by your goalie in the second period was insane.
He could see that a few minutes had passed before she had sent another message.
Right?
Luke chuckled under his breath, imagining her replaying that moment to catch every angle.
Thanks! Yeah. Guessing you’re becoming a hockey expert now?
Her reply came a few moments later.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I still had to Google ‘goalie interference’ halfway through the third period.
Luke’s laugh came a little louder than he intended, earning a curious glance from Nico as he walked past. He quickly typed out a response.
Hey, that’s progress. Next time, you’ll be explaining it to someone else.
Don’t hold your breath.
Leaning back against the locker, Luke let out a content sigh.
As the team wrapped up their post-game routines and boarded the bus back to the hotel, Luke found himself scrolling back through their conversation. It wasn't anything overly sentimental or dramatic, but it was enough to keep him grounded.
By the time the bus pulled into the hotel parking lot, Luke had his reply ready.
By the way, next time we’re in the same city, I owe you a crash course in hockey. No Googling is required.
He hit send and pocketed his phone, feeling lighter as he stepped off the bus.
The team had safely made it to Vancouver, which meant one thing: a Hughes family reunion. With the game not being until tomorrow afternoon, the evening was occupied by some much-needed family time over a home-cooked dinner.
“So, how’s the road trip treating you, Luke?” His mother asked, handing him a plate as everyone settled around the table.
“Good,” Luke said with a shrug. “Tiring, but good.”
Jack smirked from across the table, unable to resist. “You mean when you’re not glued to your phone?”
Luke froze, glaring at his brother. “What are you talking about?” he said quickly, a little too defensive for it to go unnoticed.
Their father raised an eyebrow. “Glued to your phone? What’s that about?”
Jack leaned back in his chair, clearly enjoying himself. “Oh, you know. Texting someone. Like all the time.”
Quinn, who’d been quietly listening, perked up. “Wait, is this about a girl?”
Luke shot Jack a sharp look, but he wasn’t done. “Might be,” Jack added while grinning. “Her name’s Avery. She’s living in New York and works at some art gallery. Also, she came to one of our games, too.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Luke muttered, slumping in his chair as all eyes turned to him.
Ellen’s expression shifted to one of delighted curiosity. “A girl? And Jack knows about her before we do?” She feigned being hurt by this.
“Technically, I don’t know much,” Jack said, shrugging dramatically. “Luke doesn’t exactly tell me all the details. But he talks about her enough that we all know he’s into her.”
“Jack,” Luke groaned, his face now buried in his hands, not knowing what to do to stop him.
Jim chuckled, shaking his head. “So, who’s Avery?”
Luke sighed, realizing there was no getting out of it. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit he couldn’t quite break, and avoided meeting their eyes. “She’s a friend,” he said carefully.
There was a brief pause as if he was weighing whether to say more, but instead, he pressed his lips together, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his face. His gaze dropped to his hands, his fingers fidgeting with a loose thread on his sleeve before he forced a casual shrug. “That’s all there is to it.”
Quinn leaned forward, his curiosity clear. “And she went to one of your games?”
“Yeah,” Luke admitted, feeling his face heat up. “It wasn’t that big of a deal.”
“Sounds like it might’ve been,” Ellen said with a knowing smile.
“Is she your girlfriend?” Jim asked bluntly, his tone teasing.
Luke hesitated, not wanting to complicate things even further. “No,” he said honestly. “We’re just…no.”
“Well, she must be something special if you're texting her all the time.” Ellen said while sending her youngest son a warm smile.
Luke smiled, the thought of Avery momentarily easing his small frustration with Jack. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “She is.”
The conversation eventually shifted back to family updates, but Luke couldn’t help replaying the moment in his mind. Jack’s big mouth had caught him off guard, but in all honesty, he didn’t really mind Avery being part of the conversation, it even felt natural.
As they all prepared for the night, Luke’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out quickly, an easy smile tugging at his lips as he saw Avery’s name on the screen.
I could definitely use some Canadian adventures. You’ll have to fill me in when you’re back.
He smiled at her last message, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. Before he could second-guess himself, he typed out a reply.
Definitely. Can’t wait to see you again.
Luke leaned back against the couch, his nerves melting into a quiet excitement. Jack, catching his expression, smirked.
“What now?” Luke asked.
Jack just shook his head. “Nothing. You’re just really bad at pretending this is ‘just friends’.”
Luke rolled his eyes but this time he didn’t argue.

Tumblr media
November 5, 2023
❝Delilah! Are you riding with us to the game with us? We gotta go now!” Jack calls out to his little sister who was back in Jersey for the weekend to watch him and Luke against the Blackhawks.
“No! Curtis’ wife is gonna pick me up!” She calls through the door of the bathroom where she was still getting ready.
“Okay! Be careful, love you!
“Love you!”
“So, whose jersey are you wearing tonight?” Tate smirks through the face time call the two girls were on.
Delilah playfully rolls her eyes, “I’m wearing Luke’s. They would both kill me if I wore a Blackhawks.”
“Ten bucks, you meet Connor and fall in love.”
“Shut up!” The two girls laugh before Delilah has to hang up.
“Shit, how do I always end up fucking lost?” Delilah mumbles to herself as she walks around the arena, having gone to the bathroom. “Next time, I’m dragging Luke off the ice.”
A chuckle rings out from behind the twenty year old, causing her to turn around the find a player from the Blackhawks.
“Holy shit, dude! You’re Connor Bedard!” Delilah’s eyes grow wide, “Sorry!”
He laughs, a blush faintly appearing on his face, “No, no, it’s okay. I just don’t expect anyone to know who I am. I mean, you’re Delilah!”
“Fuck, you know who I am?” She raised an eyebrow as Connor stares into her bright blue eyes.
“Of course I know who you are! Everybody should!” Connor grinned, “But your going the wrong way if your looking for the seats, it’s the other way.”
“Thank you! Have a good game!” Delilah calls over her shoulder as she rushes in the right direction.
“Nice going, Connor. Celebrity crush right in front of you and you don’t even get her number.” Connor mumbles to himself as he heads to the locker room to get ready, “Dumbass, really.”
Delilah stands next to the Wags and girlfriends of her brother’s teammates, waiting for the two to come out so they could get dinner and go back to the apartment.
“Lilah, we’re having a girls day this weekend, are you in Jersey long enough to come?” Curtis wife turns to the younger girl with a warm smile.
“I can adjust my schedule, I’m supposed to be in Nashville by Tuesday next week to write with a singer that wanted to duet.”
“Okay, just get Jack to text Cu—,”
“Delilah, hey.” Connor rushes towards the singer, out of breath from running so that she didn’t leave before he saw her again. “Hey.”
“Hey.” She giggled, hand instantly going to mess with the ends of her hair, the wags standing next to her smirking at each other at the sight.
“Hey, I was, uh, I was wondering if I could get your number?” Connor, becoming aware of the eyes on him, scratches the back of his neck.
Delilah bits her bottom lip to try to hide the smile fighting its way onto her face as she pulls her phone from her back-pocket, unlocking it with her passcode and trading phones with him.
Meanwhile, coming out of the locker room, the two brothers pause along with Nico and Dawson as they watch the scene in front of them.
“Is she…is she giving him her number?” Luke’s jaw hangs in disbelief as he watches his little sister laughing along with Connor as they exchange phones back.
“She’s flirting with him!” Jack exclaimed quietly.
“How do you know she’s flirting and isn’t just nervous?” Nico asked, his accent thick.
“She’s playing with the ends of her hair.” Both reply together as Luke pulls his phone out and takes a picture.
“Dude, what are you doing?” Dawson laughed at the boy.
“Photographic evidence for when I tell Quinn and she denies it.”
“Bedard! Let’s get it!” Someone calls from the team, causing Connor to look back at them for a second, holding a finger up for them to wait.
“So, I’ll text you later?”
Delilah grinned, “Yeah. Sure.”
“Cool. See you later.”
“Bye.”
“I saw that.”
Delilah jumps as Luke’s voice comes from behind her, “The fuck dude?! Don’t do that shit!”
“I saw that, and I’m telling Quinn.” Luke tells his little sister, waving his phone in the air to show his and Quinn’s messages pulled up.
“Don’t tell Quinn!”
“I’m going to and you can’t deny it ‘cause I have photo proof.” Luke has a smug look on his face.
“Okay.” Delilah shrugged, walking towards where their older brother was talking to Nico. “Guess I’ll just tell Jack who really broke his hockey stick a few months ago.”
“What? Delilah, no!” Luke chases her, “I won’t tell Quinn!”
