Jay does the unforgivable while undercover and you find out. When you walk away he knows one thing for certain, he has to get a new truck

You were sitting on the corner of the bar, Stella leaning against your legs as she laughed at something Kelly said. You were the only woman on rescue squad and she was the only woman on the truck so you two were fairly close. You pretty much gave her credit for opening Kelly up to you being on rescue squad. You were waiting on Jay to get to Molly’s with the rest of intelligence. Since you lived in the same building as Kelly and Stella, you’d ridden into work with Stella.

You spotted Adam, Kevin and Kim walk in and whistled to get their attention. Adam nodded, Kim wouldn’t meet your eyes and when Kevin did you could tell something was off. “I’ll be right back babe” you spoke into Stella’s ear and she cut her eyes back at you then followed your line of sight to the crew from intelligence “Something up?” you shrugged “I don’t know yet”

“Holler if you need me” she told you and you grinned “I know and I know you’ll bring Sev too” she winked “You know it” 

You started to work your way through the crowd and clocked Adam and Kevin exchanging looks followed by Kim death glaring at them both. Ok, something was definitely up. You headed for the door and pushed it open into the cool night air, looking around for any sign of Jay or Erin.

You spotted his truck and her suv parked right down the way so you started to walk in that direction. You’d gotten maybe ten feet when you’d heard Erin’s voice. You’d known her for years, she was pissed. You got closer and heard your name “What about Y/N?” “What about her Erin?” Jay asked and the next words out of Erin’s mouth made you feel like your entire body had been dipped in ice, like you were frozen to the spot. Your mind and body both screaming at you to move but both refusing to do so at the same time. “She deserves to know that you fucked that girl while you were undercover. If you don’t tell her I fucking will. She’s one of my best friends Jay. She deserves better than this, better than you”

He cheated on you. Jay cheated on you. You’d been with him for three years. Three fucking years of your life. You were in love with him,loyal to him. Hell you’d been worried about him the last week when he’d been under, hoping he was ok…and he was fucking someone else…you wanted to cry but it felt like your body had locked itself into some type of numbness to protect yourself. You couldn’t even register the cold air around you biting into your skin. Thoughts of Jay, your Jay..the man you loved with another woman…kissing another woman…touching another woman..

You were gonna be sick. You turned and ran back towards Molly’s heading for the back of the bar and barely made it to the side of the dumpster before hitting your knees. Everything you’d eaten that day came up as the tears finally hit. He’d cheated on you. He’d thrown everything away. Had you ever meant anything to him?

“Sweetheart?” you flinched at Herrman’s voice before wiping your face and forcing a smile onto your face “Hey, um can I slip in the back?” he eyed you for a second “Are you sure you’re good? Looked like you were getting sick?” you shook your head “Naw, I’m good” he nodded slowly “Ok”

He held the door open behind himself after tossing the trash he’d come out with so you slipped in behind him and the moment you hit the inside of the bar you headed for the truck crew, hiding yourself in the group of men you worked with and asked Stella to grab you a shot. She raised an eyebrow “What happened?” “I promise to tell you later but for now please” she nodded and went behind the bar, pouring you a shot.

You downed it then another. You were three shots in by the time the door opened and Erin walked in followed by Jay. You looked up and downed your fourth shot, knowing your face more than likely betrayed how you felt but why shouldn’t it? If he didn’t care any more than to stick his dick into some tramp who didn’t even know his actual name then why couldn’t you let everyone that the two of you knew that he was a cheating piece of crap?

 He spotted you and the bastard had the nerve to let a smile slip onto his face? The fucking nerve. “Kelly?” you spoke his name and he cut his eyes up because normally you called him Sev or Mr Kidd. “Yeah?” you looked towards him “Don’t let me hit him. He’s a detective and I can’t afford that charge” his eyes widened but he nodded “Ok”

Jay made it to you and acted like he was going to lean in to kiss you. You leaned back and laughed “Like hell” he raised an eyebrow “What?” you shoved his chest “Don’t fuckin try to kiss me” he staggered back a bit just for the simple fact he hadn’t expected you to shove him. “What the hell baby? I haven’t seen you in a week. I missed you” you laughed and turned to try to grab another shot but Stella moved the bottle and shook her head “Nope, you’ll thank me tomorrow”

You sighed then stole Tony’s beer instead and turned to face Jay as you turned it up to your lips “Did you miss me when you were in between whoever’s legs you crawled between?” his eyes widened and he looked over the crew from fifty one that was surrounding you and going from looking confused to looking pissed very quickly. One thing you loved about the station house, you were a family unit. You fought amongst yourselves yeah but when someone on the outside hurt one of you? Everyone rallied.

He reached for your arm “Can we just talk” you flinched “Don’t touch me” “Don’t touch her” Kelly, Stella, Tony, Capp, Carver and Cruz echoed and he held his hands up “Can we talk for one second please” you cut your eyes at Stella “If I look at you send everyone” she was glaring at Jay then said “If you look at me babe, I’m coming too, charges be damned”

You followed Jay across the bar to a corner that was semi private but close enough your crew could see you. You turned to face him, feeling tears spring to your eyes despite the alcohol you had hoped would drown them out “Was she good?” his face twisted in disgust “What?” you shrugged “Just asking, I mean three years. I hope she was good”

His gaze dropped “She was a mistake” you nodded slowly, angry tears slipping out your eyes and down your face “Oh so you just slipped and fell into her pussy?” he raised his eyes to you and when you saw he had tears in them you laughed “Don’t fucking don’t” and turned to walk away.

“I love you” he called after you and you spun around with every intention to swing on him if you hadn’t been picked up and thrown across Kelly’s shoulder at that exact moment. “We’re taking you home” Stella told you from his side and looked at Jay “Back off” “I just want to explain what happened to her”

You cocked your head to the side to look at Stella despite the world being upside down in your current view “It’s fine Stel, ask him he just fell into her pussy and it’s fine because he loves me. FUCK YOU JAY.”

“Come on Kelly” Stella told him so he moved to carry you out and Jay couldn’t get the hint and followed the three of you. When Kelly put you down for you to get into Stella’s jeep you lunged to swing on Jay and Kelly grabbed you around the waist and spoke into your ear “Say whatever you need to but don’t fucking hit a detective. I’m not speaking as your friend I am speaking as your Lieutenant, calm down or I’ll suspend you from squad”

You cut your eyes at him and he shrugged “I’m protecting you” you nodded then looked back at Jay who stood on the sidewalk a few feet away “I loved you with everything I had Jay and it wasn’t enough so I hope she was worth it. We’re done, there’s no give me a second chance no baby I love you. When you fuck someone else there is no more us”

You didn’t wait to see what he’d say or do and instead nodded to Kelly so he let you loose to get into Stella’s jeep. You slammed the door and slid the seat belt into place, letting your head fall back and tears finally start to fall in earnest as she pulled away from the curb.

Jay climbed into his truck to head into work and when he lifted the console looking for his damn wallet one of your hair ties were laying there under it like a damn calling card. He picked it up, running his fingers over it. This was only the tenth one he’d found in the last month. 

Every time he closed his eyes he could see that look on your face. He never meant for it to happen. Never meant to hurt you. Now he couldn’t even sit in his damn truck without having memories of you, memories of just how bad he fucked up surrounding him. He was on the verge of selling the damn thing just to have a little bit of peace, to have somewhere that didn’t carry memories of you. The dash where the scuff from your new boots were still at, the photo of you and him that he’d yet to have in him to take off the dash despite Erin threatening to kick his ass if she spotted it again, every damn chapstick or starbucks straw he’d found since the two of you split. 

Every memory of you and him, unable to wait until you got home, tangled together with the windows so damn fogged. That weekend spent at the beach where you slept in the bed of the truck because you wanted to be under the stars. He threw the hair tie on the floor. He needed a new damn truck.

BORDER

You were pacing in the hall of Med, waiting to see if Carver was ok. You heard Crockett’s voice and turned to see the doctor walking towards you with a smile “Good news, your boy’s fine” you grinned “That is good news doc. Thank you” he nodded “Happy to help”

He looked at you for a second then smiled “Y/N…I know you and Jay Halstead split a few months back but would it be too soon for me to ask you if you would want to get coffee or dinner some time?” you cut your eyes down at your filthy gear then back up at him “If you’re asking me out while I look like this? I’d say it’s perfect timing. Got your cell handy so I can give you my number?” He grinned and pulled it out of his pocket “Yes ma’am” and held it out.

You added your name and number into his contacts putting a little firetruck and fire emoji next to your name. When you handed it back he laughed lightly “Cute” you shrugged “I always add emojis to my contacts” he hit your number and let your phone ring “Make sure to add me good ones but just so you know I wasn’t saying cute about that darlin” and winked at you before he handed you Carver’s discharge papers. You felt your face warm before you said “Call me soon ok Crockett?” he nodded “I’ll call you as soon as I get a break which is in half an hour. Soon enough?” you grinned “Yes it is”

“I’m telling you they’re like perfect together” Jay tried to block out Erin most days if it wasn’t something directly to do with the case at hand. If she wasn’t giving him hell about you still she was simply just giving him hell. What drew his attention into hers and Kim’s conversation was when Kim laughed lightly “Hmm a doctor and a firefighter. That sounds like the plot a good book waiting to happen”

He barely glanced up when Erin chuckled and leaned closer to Kim, speaking in a voice barely above a whisper but he still caught it “The way Crockett was looking at Y/N? I’m fairly certain it would be fairly high on the spice level at that”  he had no right to feel the anger he did and yet the pen in his hand snapped. Crockett and you? You were moving on. Of course you were moving on. He cheated on you. He was a fucking idiot and didn’t realize what was in front of him, couldn’t keep his damn dick in his pants and now the woman he loved was no longer his.

He glanced down at the blue staining his palm and cursed, throwing the pen away and standing to head to the bathroom to attempt to wash his hands.

Crockett was different from Jay. He didn’t try to hide things, he told you about his past. You knew about his daughter, his struggles. It was nice. He understood your reservations about trust, about why you would be so cold some days. He knew Jay had completely crushed your heart but he wasn’t shying away from the job of fixing it.

Little by little he started to mend the breaks. Little by little you started to trust him. Little by little the pain left from Jay’s betrayal started to be replaced by the care that was growing for Crockett. 

Whether it was greeting you anytime you had to come to med with a kiss and a “Hey Darlin” or “Everything ok Darlin” along with a coffee   or  just being there when you had a bad call   or just calling you the nights you didn’t get together to let you know what he was up to because he knew even if you would never say the words that the thoughts plagued your mind. He won your heart.

You were laying across Crockett’s chest,his fingers tracing patterns on your back. The room was silent except for the noise from the traffic down below “Crockett?” you whispered and he made a noise in response before saying “Yeah darlin?” “Please don’t break my heart. It can’t take much more” he kissed the side of your head and said “I promise you darlin. I’m man enough to break things off with you before I cheat on you”

You cut your eyes up at him with a grin “Good answer” he laughed “Wasn’t it now?’ and pulled you into a kiss.

Jay handed over the signed title to his truck and took the check from the man. “What’s wrong with it?” the man asked and Jay laughed bitterly “Nothing man. I had it with my ex. I fucked things up with her and it’s got three years of memories. I had to get a new truck” 

He’d seen you with Crockett, you were happy. You didn’t have that broken look in your eyes anymore. He couldn’t even be pissed. He’d done it to himself, now he had to live with it. He just knew he couldn’t keep driving the truck that you had ridden in so many times at his side and know that you would never even be his friend again. He had to try to move on too.

Until You-Part 1

Connor Rhodes x Reader x Will Halstead/Rhodestead x Reader

You've known Will for a while but becoming Jay's partner puts him further into your life than before. Then of course you meet Dr Connor Rhodes officially and it appears life may become a little complicated.

Working out of the twenty first precinct meant you knew the members of intelligence already. You happened to be one of the patrolmen Sergeant Platt and Sergeant Voight agreed on liking so anytime they needed an extra set of hands yours was called on. You also happened to be lucky enough to be friends with Fireball, the girlfriend of Detective Jay Halstead and their tech expert Greg “Mouse” Gerwitz which meant you were friends with the unit on top of a working relationship.

Even knowing all of that you hadn’t expected that four days after Detective Lindsay took the job with the FBI in New York to walk into work one morning and get told to report upstairs. When you made it up to the floor intelligence used Voight was waiting at the top of the stairs and led you to his office. “Have a seat” he motioned to the chair across from him then walked around the desk and sat down.

You smiled slightly “Why am I up here?” “As you know, I have an opening on my team” he replied and you nodded “Yes sir. I was at Erin’s going away party” he smiled slightly “Well when she and I spoke about a possible replacement for her, she recommended you. I looked at your record,spoke to Trudy and Al and well I agree. You’re a good fit” 

“Are you offering for me to join intelligence?” you asked and he nodded “It’s a one time deal” you grinned “I’ll take it!” he laughed “Ok. Go get changed.You’ll be partnered with Halstead”  “Yes sir”

You stood and thanked him before heading to the locker room. You quickly changed your clothes and headed back out into the bullpen.

Jay was sitting on the edge of his desk with Mouse and both men smiled when they saw you. “Should we be worried that Erin picked you as her replacement?” Jay asked and you shrugged “She knows I'll look out for fireball and not let you two get into any trouble, well not anymore than I can help” 

Mouse grinned “Welcome to the team Y/N” you nodded “Thanks” Jay raised an eyebrow “I'll decide at the end of the day if I'm gonna welcome you or not” Mouse shook his head “If he gives you a hard time during the day just dip into med and tell on him” You laughed lightly “Thanks for the tip Gerwitz I'll be sure to remember that”

“Why haven't you taken the detective exam?” Jay asked as he drove. The two of you were headed to interview a witness at the hospital. They'd caught a bullet in the process of a robbery. Luckily it hadn't hit anything major and from what you were told a full recovery would be made. You shrugged “I like the twenty first and before this offer came up if I took the exam that would have meant changing districts when I passed” 

“When?” He asked with a slight smirk and you nodded “Yeah, when. I could pass that exam with my eyes closed Halstead” he shook his head “I see why you and our girl get along so well now”  you shrugged “She's a smart gorgeous woman and so am I?” He shook his head “and modest to boot, look at that”

Jay parked his truck so you slipped the chain with your badge on it over your head before climbing out and following him across the parking lot. “Well mighty detective, are you taking the lead?”

He rolled his eyes “Ok now I see why Erin picked you. It's like she never left” you grinned “Now that is a compliment if I've ever heard one”

The E.D. was actually not insane for the first time in a while considering. You and Jay stopped at the front desk to ask Maggie about the shooting vic. “Cheryl Lockwood. She's on the second floor. Room two fifteen” “Thanks Maggie” Jay told her and she nodded “Your girl has a break in half an hour by the way” he grinned and cut his eyes at you “We may just have to hang around”

You shrugged “Hey I'm good” and nodded towards the elevator “Besides, who knows how long the interview may take?” The two of you walked to the elevator and stepped on. You hit the button for the second floor and cut your eyes at Jay “Wasn't your brother one of the docs that caught this case?”

He nodded “Yeah, Will and Connor Rhodes are the two I think” you had met Dr Rhodes in passing only. Just enough that you knew him by face. “Don't know about Rhodes but Will's a decent doctor” he shrugged “Will says he's an ass but a decent doctor. Fireball says he's alright that Will has some sort of crush he won't admit to” 

You barked out a laugh “Damn Jay put your brother on blast like that” he shrugged “Not judging. I have a boyfriend and a girlfriend who are boyfriend and girlfriend” you shrugged then “Good point” and he laughed “See? Can't say I'm judgmental at least”

The elevator stopped on the second floor and when it opened you waved your hand “Please, age before beauty” he shook his head “The sass I deal with at home has now been added to at work” 

You laughed and stepped off behind him “Maggie said two fifteen” he looked around then pointed to a sign on the wall saying rooms two ten through two sixteen were to the left “We go left” you nodded “Let's go”

You knocked on the door of room two fifteen before pushing it open. There was a blonde woman sitting up in the bed, a sling was on her left arm and her upper torso was covered in gauze and bandages. “Mrs Lockwood?” she turned towards the two of you “Are you the detectives from intelligence?” Jay pointed at you “Well, she’s an officer from intelligence. I’m a detective from intelligence”

You shook your head at Jay then introduced yourself before asking her if she felt up to giving her statement. “Of course, anything I can do to help catch these people”

“Thank you for your time Mrs. Lockwood. We'll be in contact with you” you told her with a smile as you and Jay walked out of her room, closing the door behind yourselves. 

He cut his eyes at you “Who knew. You may be a decent cop after all” you rolled your eyes “Your previous partner picked me and your girlfriend likes me” he laughed “She also loves me and Mouse so what's that saying for her taste?”

You shook your head and checked the time “Well lookie there. By the time we get downstairs she'll be on break” a grin slipped onto his face “I will buy you lunch for a week if you agree that it took us longer than it did to get Cheryl's statement” 

You laughed “I'll just go grab food in the cafeteria. Go see your girl, maybe you'll be in a halfway decent mood the rest of the day” the two of you stepped on the elevator and he bumped your shoulder “I think we'll get along fine”

When the two of you made it back down to the E.D.  Will was at the front desk and spotted Jay when the two of you stepped off the elevator. “Jay!” He greeted with a smile then his eyes landed on you and he spoke your name with a hint of confusion.

Jay put a hand on your shoulder “She's my new partner. Erin kind of picked her out and Voight agreed” Will's brown eyes landed on yours and you felt a smile slip onto your face, the elder Halstead was always gorgeous in your opinion. He nodded slowly “I say it's a good pick” then he cut his eyes at Jay “She just went to the doctor's lounge”

Jay grinned “Thanks Will” then patted your shoulder “Keep Firecracker company man. Go buy her lunch in the cafeteria or something. You know what's decent and what to avoid” he patted your shoulder then disappeared in the direction of the doctor's lounge.

You watched him scurry off then looked back at Will “You don't have to babysit me” he shrugged “I normally take my break with Fireball but considering she's busy I could use the company?” You shrugged “in that case Dr Halstead let's go”

The two of you fell in step with each other to head towards the cafeteria “So, intelligence?” He asked and you nodded “I know it's a big jump but I've been working with them for years. I think I can handle it” he nodded “You'll be fine. You're a good cop” you smiled “Thank you”

You motioned back towards the direction the two of you had come from “Those three are something else aren't they?” He raised an eyebrow “Oh, Jay and Mouse and Fireball?”

You nodded “I've never seen a relationship with only two people work so well” he shrugged “They've gone through hell at each other's sides. It wasn't easy but they never gave up on each other and the love they have for each other is unimaginable” you smiled “If only we were all so lucky”

He shrugged “Who knows what tomorrow may bring, right?” By then the two of you had gotten to the cafeteria so he held the door open for you then offered you his arm “Stick with me because some of this stuff will have you back in the E.D. before end of shift” you laughed “Lead the way”

You and Will were talking while you ate. You were laughing about the time you responded to the call when some woman who was in the Rangers decided to come into Mollys and try Fireball on for size. “I walked in, she grins and says Firecracker, what's up? While her hands bleeding from busted knuckles and chic is still laying in the busted table”

He laughed “Jay's the one I'd call the hot head, Mouse is normally the calmer one unless he's really pushed but her? She's kind of the wild card” you nodded “Best way to keep men on their feet” he grinned and the way he looked at you made your face warm, damn he was good looking. “Yeah, got to love those wild cards” he agreed.

“Halstead. Who's your friend” you cut your eyes up to see Dr Rhodes walking towards the two of you and he smiled “I know you” you waited until he said your name then nodded “Good job” he grinned “Why are you here with Will?” You shrugged “Good company?” 

He motioned “Can I sit?” You shrugged “Sure” he sat down next to Will, across from you, his blue eyes glued to yours as you said “I'm also Jay's partner now and Jay is around here somewhere with his girl because she was on her break so me and Will got lunch”

He nodded “Good partner to kill time for him” You shrugged “Like I said, I've had worse company then Will” he cut his eyes at Will then winked at you “Any time you want better company, come find me Firecracker” you felt your face warm again and saw Will raise an eyebrow but thankfully Jay chose that time to appear over your shoulder. 

His lips were clearly swollen a bit and his hair was tousled and you couldn't help but laugh “Damn Halstead” he smoothed a hand over his hair and stole Will's drink “Not a word. Come on Firecracker. We gotta go”

You nodded then looked back at Will and Connor “I'll see you two around?” Will nodded “Of course. You're partnering with my brother now” and Connor winked at you “If I'm lucky I'll see around”

Once you were back in Jay's truck he pulled out onto the road then cut his eyes at you “Were my brother and Connor both flirting with you?” Your eyes widened “No”

He laughed “That was a quick answer” you narrowed your eyes “Mouse doesn't get jealous over you and her having time alone” he shook his head “We don't really do jealousy amongst the three of us but me and her have ways to chill him out even if he did” you shook your head “I don't even wanna know” and he smirked “No, you don't. But back to you with my brother and Connor because that was flirty”

“JAY” You warned and he held up his hands defensively “Ok ok. Just saying…” “Don't” you warned and he started laughing “Fine but just know I would be supportive” you glared at him “Your boyfriend and girlfriend are the only reason shooting you isn’t an option” and that only made him laugh harder.

Kelly Severide x Reader

No one knows why the new paramedic is so secretive about her homelife until it crashes with her worklife

The new paramedic at fifty one was damn near a mystery to everyone. She’d gotten hired nearly three months before and hardly no one knew anything about her personal life, not even Sylvie. She was sweet and damn good at her job but beyond coming to work and doing her job that was all anyone ever saw of her. Kelly had found himself damn near infatuated with her within about a week.

She was smart and funny and didn’t mind putting anyone in their place. She’d stand in front of her patients on domestic calls to shield them from their abusers spewing venom while CPD hauled them away and would be so gentle with children it made his heart flip just seeing it. She was an amazing woman and he wanted nothing more than to know more about her, just as a friend but she would barely give him the time of day.

He walked into the common area and she was sitting with Sylvie, Gallows and Ritter. A laugh bubbled out of her at something Ritter said and he had half a mind to slip him a twenty to keep saying whatever it was that had made her laugh just so he could keep hearing the sound. This was kind of pathetic. He was falling for a woman he basically only knew on a work basis but even only knowing her on a work basis and for this long everyone seemed to be pulled towards her. She had this gravitational pull. He just didn’t understand why she still hadn’t let anyone in. He wondered if maybe it was something in her past, had she endured something at an old house that made her slow to trust? Was she planning on just being here temporarily? That thought made his heart ache, losing her before he ever even knew her.

He would keep trying, just to be her friend. Nothing more. He just wanted to see one of those smiles pointed at him just once. She cut her eyes up at him and nodded when he walked by “Lieutenant” he smiled “Morning”

Yeah, he’d just have to keep trying.

“Daniel, baby you gotta stay with uncle Caleb. You know mommy has to go to work!” you passed your son over to your brother and shot him a grateful smile. Your older brother was absolutely your life line. When you found out you were pregnant his biological father had disappeared damn near as fast as the second pink line had appeared but Caleb had stepped up to help you however he could, including syncing his schedule to make sure he was always off when you had to work.

Normally Daniel would be in daycare but they were closed due to a pipe bursting over the weekend. “Thank you so much for this Caleb” he grinned “I told you before he was ever born, I’m always in your corner. Now get your butt to work. Go save some lives. I got little man” you kissed Daniel’s cheek and patted Caleb’s shoulder before grabbing your bag and heading out to your car.

You liked firehouse fifty one. Everyone who worked there seemed to be truly decent people, Sylvie Brett, your partner was the world’s biggest sweetheart. Chief Boden was the best boss you could ask for. Captain Matt Casey was always nice and understanding,as for the lieutenant of the house Kelly Severide..well you didn’t want to think about how much you liked him. He was gorgeous, beyond brave even if he was a little brash at times and when you would see him interact with kids? God it made you almost want to see if Daniel’s daycare could come to the house on a field trip..almost.

You had the same rule for your job as you had for your dating life. You had to hit the six month mark before you could meet Daniel. Hell the only person who knew you had a son at the house was Chief Boden and he promised to stay tight lipped when you asked it of him.

When you got into work you spotted Kelly in the bays and smiled at him when he looked your way “Morning Severide” he grinned “Morning” you walked past him and he called your name so you glanced over your shoulder at him “Yes?”

“When are you gonna let me buy you lunch? Just as friends?” you shook your head “Why don’t you buy Casey lunch? You two are already friends” you continued into the station house and heard everyone laughing behind you.

It was around four when a call came in for a multi vehicle accident. Truck, rescue squad and ambulance were to respond. When you came running into the bay to jump into your rig with Sylvie you winked at Kelly when he looked your way and he laughed despite the situation. Maybe you were finally warming up to him?

He climbed into the rescue squad and hollered at Cruz to get it going. The line of vehicles hit the road and tore out.

When they rolled onto the scene it was a total of four vehicles involved. Some were worse than the others. He hadn’t expected you to jump out of the ambulance before it stopped rolling and take off running towards a dark green truck screaming “DANIEL! CALEB” 

He instinctively jumped out of rescue squad to run after you. When he got to the truck he saw that you were crawling into the backseat to check on a little boy that was probably close to two and a man that favored you was standing next to the truck with a cut across his forehead. He called your name gently and you looked back “I’m sorry Lieutenant Severide. I know the most serious patients go first but I had to check on my little boy and my brother”

His eyes widened “Your little boy?” you turned your back on him and finished looking over the boy before unbuckling him from the car seat and sliding out of the truck “Kelly this is my son Daniel. Daniel this is mommy’s friend Kelly” “Hey Kelly” Daniel said with a shy smile. “Hey” Kelly greeted. He saw your hands were shaking as you shifted Daniel onto your hip to check your brother..what did you call him..Caleb? Caleb’s head. “Stay with them, I’ll radio another rig and get ritter to assist Brett”

“I can help her” you argued and he shook his head “Stay with your son Medic. That’s an order” you smiled slightly “Yes sir” he nodded “I’ll find you in a little while, after I help clear the scene, ok?” “Ok”

You were sitting on the curb with Daniel and Caleb while Caleb talked to his insurance company. They were sending a tow truck and a rental car. Guess that was why he paid such a high premium for such good service. He’d only needed butterfly stitches so Sylvie had let you just grab them out of the back of your rig.

“Are you in trouble for coming to us?” Caleb asked and you shook your head “I don’t think so” then saw Kelly head your way “Let’s see” you passed Daniel to his lap then stood to meet Kelly halfway. Daniel waved at him and you smiled when Kelly leaned around you to wave back.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone you had a son?” he asked and you shrugged “Boden knew” he nodded “Is that why you’ve stayed so distant from everyone?” you nodded “People are always friendly and want to get to know you until they find out you have a kid then it’s oh sorry never mind” he smiled softly “He’s a handsome little man. Looks like his mama” you grinned “Thanks Kelly” he nodded “So, that lunch offer?” you rolled your eyes “Really Severide?” he held up a hand “I was gonna say the diner down from the station house has really good waffles. Can I buy you, your son and your brother some?”

Daniel is your son, he’s your world. I get that. Caleb is your brother, also important to you. It’s not that big of a deal, it’s just waffles sweetheart” you shook your head “Caleb’s rental will be here in half an hour. When intelligence finally closes a bank robbery case you want nothing more than to go home to Mouse and Addy

“Silent alarm triggered at the check cashing center on the corner of Andrews and South Avenue” you cut your eyes at Kevin. You and him were half a block away “Intelligence responding. Detectives Atwater and Kidd”  he called over the radio and dispatch responded. You busted a u-turn in your jeep and hit the gas.

Kevin reached in the backseat and passed you your vest, helping you to fasten the straps as you drove before pulling his own over his head. The moment you parked across from the check cashing center you tightened the straps on his vest and nodded to him before the two of you stepped out. 

You spotted the lights on the outside of the building and nodded to him “There’s the alarm” he pulled the radio up to his mouth “Hold us down on location and send us some backup” “Copy that” dispatch responded so he slid the radio onto his belt and nodded to you, you both falling into place at each other’s side as you walked towards the building.

You looked at him and he nodded so you opened the door and spotted the security guard laying in the middle of the floor bleeding. Kevin started to step in about the same time you heard a woman scream and shooting start. He shook his head but you nodded “Handle this, I got it” “Kidd!” he hollered but you were already headed towards the sounds of the screams.

You ran around the corner of the building but were forced back when the gunfire turned towards you.You ducked around the corner, hitting your radio with your left as you returned fire with your right “Where’s that backup dispatch?!?” you heard the dispatcher putting a wide call out over the radio but spotted three men running for a car so you stepped out, aiming for the back window. You kept shooting as they sped off.

“Help us!” you heard someone holler and turned to see a man standing over a woman who’d been shot. You hit your radio “Send me an ambulance. We have a civilian hit” you ran over to  the man and kneeled at the woman’s side. Your eyes skimmed over the blood spreading under her, your eyes widening. “Shit” you scrambled to get your vest off so you could strip your over shirt off to use to hold pressure to her wound. The man moved to help you when he saw what you were doing, using his flannel as well. “Hey, what’s your name?”

She took a staggered breath “Monica” you smiled “Ok Monica, you’re gonna stay awake and talk to me until the ambulance gets here.You got that?” she winced when you pressed down harder on her wound “Ok” you nodded, eyeing the wedding ring on her hand “How long you been married” she swallowed hard “Ten years, was shopping for our anniversary” you nodded “Impressive. I just got engaged myself, any advice?” you looked around, finally hearing the sound of sirens falling on your ears. 

She laughed weakly “Never go to bed angry and never leave in the morning without saying I love you” you turned back to face her, seeing she was paler than she’d been a few moments before “That’s good advice. I’ll pass it on to my fiance. When you get out of the hospital I may come see you for more,that good?” she smiled “Sure” 

You stood next to Kevin, running down everything you knew for Hank and the rest of the unit. “Hey, Jay’s got a henley in the truck I can grab you” Hailey offered and you shot her a smile “Please” she nodded and walked out of the check cashing center towards Jay’s truck. Sylvie had given you a bottle of sterile water and a handful of gauze to clean your hands but that still left you in just a plain white t-shirt that was splattered with blood. You hoped Monica would pull through.

Your fingers absentmindedly found your engagement ring, tracing the twisting band as you said “Witnesses said the perps avoided the cameras completely so I’m thinking they cased the place beforehand boss. Could be the same ones we’ve been looking for from that bank robbery a couple weeks back” Hank nodded “Sounds like it” “I got the plates on the car, we can run them” you offered and he nodded “Do it. Maybe we can get traffic cams on them and have something to go off of”

Hailey walked back in and passed you the black henley and you smiled as you took it from her. “I um I don’t know where to change” you spoke softly and Hank cut his eyes up then motioned to the manager of the check cashing center. She walked over “Yes Sergeant?” he motioned to you “Can my detective change in your office? She’s covered in blood and doesn’t exactly want it to dry on her” she nodded “Of course. Come with me, detective. I’ll show you” “Thank you” you whispered to Hank and he nodded as you walked past, following the woman.

After you changed out of the stained white shirt into Jay’s and had seen thankfully your sports bra was left unharmed you walked back out to the unit, wrapping the white shirt up in a ball, trying to hide the blood so any bystanders didn’t have the opportunity to gawk because that always annoyed the hell out of you.

Jay bumped your shoulder once you got back to his side and smiled slightly “You’ve been trying to steal that shirt now you roped her into finally getting it” you grinned at him “You know she loves me more” and winked at him before following Kevin out of the check cashing center to head back the precinct. You would try your hand at tracking the plates but if you needed help you could always enlist Gwen, that woman would probably pull satellite footage in the same time you could get a cell phone ping.

“Are you sure you’re ok?” you let out a breath at the concern in Mouse’s voice. “I’m fine, baby. We’re still waiting to hear back from med on whether or not Monica made it out of surgery, hence why I rang Gwen to help me track the plates” “Ok love. I know you’ve got this but when she told me you got shot at I had to hear your voice for myself” you smiled at his words “I know. I love you Greg. I’ll see you at home tonight, ok?” “Ok. I love you too” after the two of you told each other goodbye and hung up your tablet dinged where Gwen had sent over the traffic cam footage of the getaway car, along with the DMV registration of the driver. You grinned as you looked it over “Gwen you amazing woman you” the registration matched the physicality of at least one of the perps height and weight wise.  

“Voight!” you called, cutting your eyes up towards his office as you stood up from your desk. He walked to the door and nodded “What ya got Kidd?” you walked over and passed him the tablet “Gwen tracked the car and found DMV registration. I think the dumbasses used one of their own cars this time. We got em!” he scoffed as he looked it over “I’ll get a warrant”

You nodded, “I’ll get everyone rounded up” you started to walk off but stopped when he called your name. You glanced back and he nodded “Good pull catching those plates in the heat of the moment like that” you smiled slightly “Just doing my job Sarge” and walked back out into the bullpen.

About the time you got to your desk your phone rang again but this time it was Will’s name. You felt your stomach knot when you picked it up because he’d been the doctor that was there when they rolled Monica in “Hello?” “Hey sweetheart” yeah anytime Will started a phone call off to you that soft? Something was wrong. “She didn’t make it, did she?” you asked and he let out a breath “I’m sorry. I know you tried” you sighed “Yeah, sometimes that just isn’t enough is it? I’ll let the team know this case is up to a manslaughter charge at minimum along with the robberies. Thanks for calling” “Of course” he replied before you hung up.

Jay cut his eyes up at you “She didn’t make it” you told him and his shoulders fell “Damn” “You did what you could lil mama” Kevin assured you and you nodded “I know but damn. She was shopping for her tenth anniversary. How do you think her husband feels right now?”

Hailey met your eyes “We find them and nail their asses. That’s what we can offer her husband” you nodded “And we will” 

You stood in roll up between Kevin and Hailey, listening as Hank went over the layout of where you all believed they were. “We hit it all at once. Take no chances. They’ve killed at least one civilian that we know of. We have full authority to use whatever force is necessary to take them down”

You adjusted your vest, tucking your moon pendant down into it and clocked Jay doing the same with his st michael pendant which caused a small smile to slip onto your face considering they were both “from Addy” 

With any luck these jackasses would either be dead or behind bars in a couple hours time. You intended to go meet with Monica’s husband either way afterward to give condolences and to let him know some form of justice had indeed been served. 

Kevin turned your shoulder so he could check the straps at your back and you cut your eyes back at him “How about a hey Kidd turn around or a lil mama let me check your vest?” He grinned “You were thinking too loud. I needed to get your attention” you laughed lightly “And that’s why you’re the best friend Atwater.You can clock my bullshit from a mile away”

“Roll out” Hank ordered and everyone grabbed their long guns and headed for whatever cars they were taking.

When you pulled up to the house you cut your eyes at Kevin and nodded once before you two climbed out. You fell into step with him, one of your hands resting on his shoulder as the two of you fell into formation with the unit. Hank motioned for Kim and Adam to take the side, you and Kevin to take the back while he, Jay and Hailey took the front.

You glanced towards Jay then Hailey and hoped that look was enough to convey the message of “Please be careful” before you followed Kevin towards the back of the house. Once the two of you were in place you waited until Voight’s voice came across the coms “Take it” before you both kicked the same spot of the back door, it bouncing off the wall at the same time you heard the side door and front door be kicked in as well.

“CHICAGO PD. FREEZE” you called at the first man who moved for a gun. He paused for a second and locked eyes with you “Don’t” you warned but he dove for the gun anyways. His hand barely touched it before you and Kevin both fired a couple rounds a piece into him.

You stepped over him and moved into the rest of the house calling out an all clear from that room.

Instead of you having to seek out Monica’s husband he ended up coming to the precinct. After the two men that the unit had taken alive were booked and processed Steven Lyleson was standing at the front desk with Trudy. She called you downstairs when he’d asked for the detective that had been with his wife when she was shot.

You held out your hand “Mr Lyleson? I’m Detective Kidd, I was the first person on scene after your wife was shot. I rendered aid with what I had available. I’m just sorry I wasn’t able to do more”  he shook your hand and a tearful smile slipped onto his face “I know. I got to speak with her before she went into surgery. She spoke about the pretty detective who just got engaged” 

You smiled slightly “She told me you and she had been married ten years” he nodded “She was an amazing woman..” he trailed off then took a deep breath “I heard Intelligence closed the case?” you nodded “Yes sir. The um the man who actually fired the bullets that killed Monica pulled on my partner and I. He didn’t make it to the precinct”  

He nodded slowly “Good” “You have my deepest condolences sir. If you ever need anything or anyone to talk to, you know where I work” he smiled “Thank you Detective Kidd and congratulations on your engagement” “Thank you” you replied and he shook your hand once more before turning to walk out.

You took a deep breath then looked back at Trudy “That was a lot” she nodded “You good?” you laughed “I will be, once I get home to Mouse and Addy” she smiled “Yeah, I figured that” 

You walked into the apartment with Addy on your hip, smiling when you saw Mouse’s truck pull up into the parking spot next to your jeep when you turned to close the door. “Look baby, Mou is home” she grinned and waved.

You sat your bags down then walked back over to the door, leaning against the frame. You watched him get his stuff together then get out of his truck. She was already wiggling to get out of your arms. “No ma’am. Mou has to get inside first then you can abandon mommy for him” she laughed “I don’t badon you. I love you” you grinned “I know baby” 

You looked back up about the time Mouse’s eyes connected with yours and a grin split his face making your heart flip. “If it isn’t the two most beautiful women in all of Chicago” you raised an eyebrow “Just Chicago?” and he rolled his eyes “Really love?” you grinned as he made it into the door, closing it behind him and sitting his stuff down with yours. 

He walked over and placed a quick kiss to your lips before Addy reached for him and that was the end of you getting any attention for the moment “Mou, daddy and hayhay gonna take me to the zoo” he grinned “They are? What animals are you gonna see?” you shook your head “And with that, I’m gonna call to order a pizza since she ate an actual meal with Stella and Kelly and you obviously have her full attention at the moment”

He looked back at you with a grin “Don't worry love, you'll get attention later” then turned his eyes back to Addy as she told him about the lions at the zoo. The first time he found out her favorite animals were the predators he'd freaking cackled “Imagine that. I love that baby girl but a product of you and Jay? Did you think she'd want to see the cute and cuddly critters sweetheart?”

After the day you’d had though, you didn’t need anything more than to see him and Addy laughing with each other as she talked about the lions and tigers at the zoo. He was telling her about the different animals and her eyes got bigger with each one. He truly did love her. Not many men would come home to the woman they love having had a child with their best friend, accept the child, reform their friendship with said best friend and never for one second give up on the woman they loved.

He was fucking extraordinary, then again Jay was an amazing man as well. He’d stuck by your side through a pregnancy he really hadn’t had to. He was there for you every step of the way and was the absolute most amazing father you could ever have imagined for Adeline. Then for him to forgive you and be open to the friendship with Mouse again? Yeah you had two amazing men in your life and lucky for you they both thought your baby girl hung the moon. The added perks of Hailey coming along with Jay was just a bonus nowadays.

Mommy got her shirt dirty so hayhay gave me daddy’s shirt to wear”  She nodded “Oh tay” you smiled “Let’s go get you a bath” there was a knock on the door so you looked back at Mouse “That is probably the pizza so do you want to get that?” he nodded “Of course sweetheart”

You took Addy’s hand and she smiled “Mommy Mou say you like wolfs” you nodded “I do baby” and she grinned “They like the moon” you widened your eyes “They do?” as the two of you headed to the bathroom.

You left Addy’s room and walked into the living room where Mouse was sitting on the couch, the half eaten pizza you and him had long since abandoned on the coffee table in front of him. “She asleep baby?” you nodded “She’s out like a light. Of course she had to tell me that Mou told her he was gonna take her out for breakfast in the morning since she was staying with daddy and hayhay friday and saturday night” he grinned with a shrug “I know we’re meeting them on saturday for the aquarium but sweetheart, I’m gonna miss her hollering for Mou when she wakes up”

You shook your head and walked over to sit down next to him, pulling your feet up under you so you could lean over on his shoulder “You are absolutely wrapped around her little finger” he laughed “You know there is no other woman on the face of this earth that would ever come before you except for Adeline Halstead” you turned to look at him and couldn’t help but laugh, your heart flipping at the smile on his face “Did you ever think that would happen when you found out about her?” he stared at you for a long moment and for a second you feared maybe you’d hit a sore spot but a smile slipped onto his face “I knew I’d love her because I knew I could never stop loving you and she’s half you. Like it or hate, Jay’s my brother for better or worse. That little lady is a combination of the two people who kept me going when no one else tried. Why the hell would I ever feel anything but love for her?”

You smiled “You say no other woman but her, what if we ever have a child together?” When you asked that question the look he got on his face was enough to make your heart ache in the best of ways “If we ever have a child?” he asked quietly and you nodded “Yeah?” he pulled you over into his lap, so you turned to face him, letting your fingers slip up into his hair. It was getting a little more length on it and it would be a lie to say you didn’t absolutely love it. 

“Then you’d still be number two love. I’d never knock Addy down just because I had a biological child. I wouldn’t do that to her. That being said if we ever had a child? I would probably think I’d died and gone to heaven the first time I had you, Addy and that baby in my arms” 

“I love you more than I could possibly ever put words to Greg” you whispered and he smiled “I love you too. I’ve known how much you love me from the moment you and Kim got out of being pinned down in the middle of a shoot out and you ran straight to me. I just hope you know how much I love you” you smiled, tracing your left hand down the side of his face “You’re here, in my arms..you love my daughter…I know Greg…I could never doubt how much you love me”

You felt your face warm “Well you know she got Chief Boden to give her away when she got married to Kelly” 

“Yeah?” he asked and you shrugged “Well I know we still have to decide a date and a location and so many other things but I was thinking about asking Hank if he’d give me away” a smile worked its way onto his face “I think he’d agree to it baby” you grinned “You do?” he nodded “Yeah love. You know you’ve always been one of his favorites.Now? Addy loves her papa Voight and I’m fairly certain he practically sees you as a daughter most days. I think he may tear up a bit”

You shook your head “Don’t exaggerate Greg” he grinned “How about we go together tomorrow evening while Addy is with Jay and Hailey. I’ll let you do the talking and I’ll just be there to be moral support” you nodded “Ok” he smiled “Ok. Now come here beautiful and let me hold you”

You were nervously fidgeting with your engagement ring as Mouse parked in front of Hank’s house. When you’d asked him if you and Mouse could stop by to talk to him about something you were fairly certain he probably thought either you were pregnant again or leaving the unit.

You just hoped he saw this as good?  Hopefully he said yes and it didn’t cross any lines? Mouse’s larger hand came over to cover yours “Breathe” you cut your eyes over at him and smiled “Thank you for coming with me” he traced your engagement ring “My job there love” you laughed lightly “Please Gerwitz. You’ve been in my corner from the moment you started at CPD”

He grinned “In my defense when I wasn’t doing so good and you stopped mid sentence to yell at Jay to and I quote shut the fuck up at him Halstead good god damn I kind of had no choice but to fall harder than I already was” you smiled “My god I love you” he laughed “Save it for the honeymoon Kidd” and winked at you before saying “I love you too baby”

You climbed out of his truck and he met you at the front of it, lacing his fingers in yours. You squeezed his hand lightly as the two of you walked to Hank’s door. Mouse knocked and a few moments later the door opened. Hank looked from one of you to the other “Mouse, Kidd. You two wanna come in?” he stepped back so you two stepped in.

Once he closed the door he directed you to the living room so you sat down on the couch while he sat in the chair across from it. You leaned up on the edge of the couch and felt Mouse’s hand on your lower back for reassurance “Where’s my granddaughter?” he asked with a smile so you laughed “With Jay and Hailey. They’re doing the zoo tomorrow then all four of us are doing the aquarium on sunday”

He nodded “Gotta say, you all do really good by her. Proud of you” you smiled broadly “Thank you” then cut your eyes back at Mouse who nodded so you took a deep breath then looked back at Hank “Well you know he proposed” he nodded “Yeah, I know. Have you two started planning yet?” 

You smiled slightly when Mouse spoke up and said “Kind of why we’re here” and gave your side a small squeeze. You cut your eyes back at him then nodded and looked back at Hank “Um you know me and Stel don’t have much in way of blood family” he nodded so you shrugged one shoulder “When her and Kelly got married Chief Boden gave her away and so I thought and if this is overstepping please tell me and I will just walk down the aisle by myself no harm no foul but would you possibly want to walk me down the aisle when Greg and I get married?”

Hank looked from you to Mouse, an unreadable look on his face before his eyes softened “You want me to give you away?” you nodded “You’re not perfect by any means Hank but you’re pretty damn close to a father figure to me  and Adeline loves her papa Voight.It would mean the world to me but like I said if it’s overstepping no hurt feelings”

He nodded slowly and to your shock, Mouse was right. He teared up slightly before he stood up and nodded “It would be my honor sweetheart” you grinned and before you thought of it you had jumped to your feet and hugged him. He froze for a second then hugged you back, patting your shoulder before releasing you “Just tell me when and where. You know I’ll show up”

You smiled broadly “Thank you so much” he nodded “Of course sweetheart”

Guess Kelly's in love

Kelly watched you as you danced with Crocket, laughing when he dipped you and spun you out. There would’ve been a time another man touching his girlfriend probably would’ve had him getting CPD called on him but the moment Crocket pulled you back in your eyes tracked the crowd for Kelly, lighting up when they locked onto him and a grin split your face. You were friends with Crocket but that was it. Kelly knew his place in your heart.

This whole charity night you and Crocket had co-headed for victims of a hurricane on the east coast. He was so damn proud of you. The moment the music ended Crocket clapped for you then pointed towards him, you nodded and headed that way so he started to push his way through the crowd to be able to meet you halfway.

When you finally got past the last line of donors, smiling politely as you made quick small talk you practically threw yourself into his arms “When did you get here?” he laughed when he felt you bury your face in the bend of his neck, planting a kiss there “About five minutes ago. You were dancing with your co-head” you pulled back from the hug and your eyes were wide “You’re not mad are you?” and he shook his head “No baby”

You grinned “Why Severide. You really are not meeting your reputation since you’ve been dating me. I mean yeah when we first started dating you were a bit of a wild card but now it seems like you’re chilling out”

“Maybe I finally found something worth chilling out for” he replied with a grin before pulling you into a kiss. You whimpered lightly against his lips and he groaned, biting your bottom lip gently “I love you” you smiled broadly “I love you too Kelly, now do you feel like socializing with me? Because I’ve been talking about my fire lieutenant boyfriend half the night and I’m fairly certain half of these people think I’ve made you up”

He laughed when you stuck your bottom lip out in a mock pout. “Oh we can’t have people thinking that now, can we?” he pulled you into his arms and used his thumb to flick your bottom lip “Stick that lip back into your mouth angel” you grinned “Just because you asked so sweetly handsome” he shook his head “Well, come on. You wanted to show me off”

Kelly remembered the day he met you. He’d gotten dinged pretty bad on a call and Boden made him go to med to get checked. He’d been a bit of an ass, honestly. Instead of Maggie however like he’d half expected to see when the door opened the prettiest woman he’d ever seen walked in and grinned at him “I hear you’re a big baby when you’re hurt and being an asshole about it”

Before he left he apologized to everyone and somehow managed to get your number. The first time he’d taken you out on a date? It shocked him how damn nervous he was just meeting your eyes that night. Every time you looked at him, a small smile playing on your face he’d feel his heart flip. What the hell kind of sorcery were they hiring at Med these days?

You were the calm to his chaos. He found himself thinking of you during the day whenever he had downtime. His mind always drifted to you, no matter what else was happening. When he had a bad day he craved holding you in his arms as a reminder that he was still alive.When he had a good day, he craved holding you in his arms to celebrate it.

The moment he knew without a shadow of a doubt he was falling for you it was a simple day. He’d had a fairly decent shift, so had you. He’d offered to go out for dinner but you’d told him you wanted to stay in. The two of you had ended up on his couch watching tv. You somehow got turned to be cuddled against his chest and he realized after about twenty minutes you were fast asleep. You’d trusted him to go to sleep on him. Just having you that close made his heart feel like it found where it truly belonged.

The first time he told you he loved you was after a bad call. Him and Casey had gotten trapped and just when it looked like that was in the rest of the truck managed to get to them. He’d gone ahead with the ambulance ride just to have an excuse with Boden.

He could still remember the look in your eyes when you saw him on one of the gurneys then you came busting into the exam room “KELLY SEVERIDE” he grinned at the sound of your voice as Connor examined him. “I believe you know my girlfriend” Connor nodded “She keeps me on my toes”

You shook your head at them both and walked over next to the bed, side eyeing Connor as you picked up the chart off the foot of the bed and started flicking through it.

“Minor smoke inhalation, waiting on xray but nothing appears broken” Connor told you and you nodded, eyes flicking back towards Kelly.

“His brain. His brain is definitely broken because I know for a fact Boden had to make him and Matt both bring their asses in” Kelly shook his head “I came willingly. I wanted to see you”

Connor looked from you to him “I'm gonna step out, give you two a minute. When xray gets down here I'll knock” “Thanks Rhodes” Kelly told him and he nodded and winked at you before walking out.

You waited until Connor was out of the room to face him and it was only then he saw the tears in your eyes “You fucking scared the shit out of me” “Come here baby” he whispered, holding a hand out towards you so you let him pull you into his arms.

You laid your head over on his shoulder, not caring about the fact that you were getting filthy from his clothes “I don't want to lose you Kelly” you whispered and he kissed the top of your head “It scared me too, the thought of never seeing you again” he admitted and you leaned back to look up at him, soot smeared on your cheek from his jacket “I'm sorry for yelling at you”

He grinned “It's ok sweetheart. I love you way too much for a little yelling to bother me” he hadn't realized what he said until a broad grin slipped onto your face “You what?”

He laughed lightly “I love you. I know it's bad timing but…” he was cut off by you pulling him into a kiss. He pulled you closer, trying to deepen the kiss but you pulled away laughing when he chased your lips. “Baby C'mon I'm hurt” he tried and you shook your head “Just wanted to say I love you too Kelly” before he could say anything else you pulled him back to you.

Kelly rolled over to find you curled up to your pillow wearing his shirt from the night before. He'd barely talked you into slipping it on after he helped you clean up, you'd been exhausted when the two of you got back from the fundraiser and just wanted out of the dress you wore.

He hadn't had any intentions of trying to have sex but the moment he unzipped your dress it was like a switch flipped you went from yawning to looking over your shoulder at him with that look that could get him to agree to anything. Needless to say by the time the two of you finally fell asleep you'd been out like a light. Even now you were snoring lightly, something that he knew embarrassed you but he found it fucking adorable.

He smiled and turned over to face you so he could watch you sleep. Neither of you had to work today and he couldn't think of a better way to spend his day off.

You push people away. It's how you cope. Only a chosen few has managed to stick around. Jay is going to prove he's not going anywhere.

You were pulling away. You could feel it and knew Jay could too. The problem? You didn’t know how to not pull away. That little voice in your head that was so damn sure and strong when it came to work was so damn quiet and uncertain when it came to yourself. You loved Jay. You knew that with every fiber of your being but that damn little voice kept whispering “He can do better than you and he's going to figure it out”

As much as you didn't want to lose him as your lover, the thought of losing him as your friend hurt worse. He'd always been there as a cornerstone when you needed him.

When Voight suggested changing partners around you'd seen the fact that Jay wanted to argue written plainly in his eyes but you spoke up and said “I agree Sarge. It's good to switch it up every now and then”

You were partnered with Adam, Kim with Jay and Hailey with Kevin. It was a big change from the usual team but all of you worked well enough together, had for years.

While you were all gearing up to roll out you saw Jay move towards you so you turned towards Hailey “Upton, check that rear strap for me?” She smiled “Of course” and readjusted it slightly then asked you to check hers too. At least by her asking you it didn't just look like you were avoiding Jay, even if he looked like a kicked puppy when you met his eyes.

“Everyone knows what you should be doing. Come home in one piece” Voight said looking around at all of you. You each nodded in turn. You grabbed your long gun then winked at Kim “Don't worry babe. I got your fella’s back” she grinned “I know you do. I got Jay's”

You smiled slightly and Kevin cleared his throat “and Hailey’s got mine if yall care” your smile turned into a full grin as you cut your eyes at him “You know I care Atwater. Anything happen to you I'm fighting the ferrymen to bring you back myself” he grinned “My girl” and bumped his shoulder against yours.

Voight shook his head but you saw a small grin “Do your damn jobs” with that he dismissed you so you rolled out. It was a quick snatch and grab. You wouldn't say nothing should go wrong because you knew your job, anything could go wrong but it should be fairly easy.

The snatch and grab went down just as planned thankfully. Six arrests were successfully made.

You were walking out of the precinct when you heard Jay call your name so you stopped and turned to see him walking towards you with one of those smiles that always made your heart flip “Hey baby. You want to go get a drink or some food or something?”

You shrugged “I'm kinda tired honestly. I was going to just go home and crash” he nodded “I can bring takeout?” He looked so damn hopeful but that voice in your head wouldn't shut up for two fucking seconds screaming about how bad it's gonna hurt if you let yourself love him as deeply as you wanted to just for him to walk away.

“It's fine honey. Um raincheck for tomorrow?” He nodded, his face falling slightly. “Ok, did I do something?” You shook your head “No, why?” he motioned back to the precinct “I've seen you stand toe to toe with Voight over trying to make you partner with anyone else and today you agreed. You haven't wanted to go out or let me come over in days. Baby is there someone else?”

Your eyes widened slightly “What?” He shrugged “I don't know here. I mean we were doing good, I thought. Is it because we had sex? Are you pulling away because of that?” You shook your head, trying not to let your eyes tear up “No Jay, of course not. Sex with you is fucking amazing”

He grinned slightly “Then why have you barely let me kiss you all week?” You shrugged and opened your mouth to say something then clamped it back “I don't want to talk here. Can you grab the takeout?” He nodded “I'll be over in a few ok?” “Ok” he took a step closer and when you didn't pull away he pressed a kiss to your temple.

You sat on your couch, waiting for Jay to knock. When he did you were up and on your feet without thinking. You opened the door to let him in and he walked in carrying the takeout bags “I got Chinese”

He walked into your kitchen as you closed and locked the front door and you heard him putting the take out trays across the counter and throwing the plastic bag into your recycling bin before he walked back into the living room, shedding his jacket and walking over to you.

He stopped just shy of you and raised one eyebrow, silently asking permission. You stepped closer to him, slipping your arms around his waist and he pulled you against his chest “There's my girl. I was wondering where she went”

You cut your eyes up at him “I'm sorry I pushed you away Jay. It's just I think I realized I was falling in love with you and I freaked out because I don't even know why you're with me and…” you were cut off by him kissing you like he was a drowning man and you were the last taste of air.

You moaned lightly against his lips and when he finally pulled away both of you were breathing a little harder “You love me?” He asked and you nodded “I do” he grinned “Good, because I love you but get it straight from here on there will be no pushing me away. You try to push me? I'll grab you and pin you to a wall. We're in this together” you chuckled lightly “You just used you pinning me to a wall as a threat. That is a fantasy Halstead”

He smirked “Oh yeah? Well baby I can make that reality right now. Just tell me you love me one more time” you smiled “I love you Jay” he groaned lightly and leaned down far enough to pick you up, forcing you to wrap your legs around his waist “I've went the last week and a half barely touching you. I'm making up for it tonight”

Part 2 of Dynasty

Can a broken heart still beat?

Mouse sat in the chair next to your bed, eyes never leaving your face. The solid sound of the machine helping your lungs push air through your body was the only sound in the room. Every moment that ticked by and you clung to life was a moment he managed to draw a breath. Twenty four hours, that was what the doctor told them. You were closing in on eighteen hours and still holding on. 

The door cracked open and he didn’t have to look up to know it was Erin and Jay. They hadn’t left the hospital either but they’d stayed in the waiting room throughout the night until visiting hours rolled back into effect or well until Sergeant Benson called in a favor and suddenly it didn’t matter if the three of them were all in your room or not as long as they stayed out of the way. “She’s still holding on man” Jay spoke softly, putting a hand on his shoulder. 

He nodded slowly “Holding on is a lot different than waking up Jay. She’s strong, she’s so damn strong but what if her body can’t handle this?” even simply giving voice to the thought was enough to force another round of tears from his eyes, they slid silently down his face. Erin stepped up next to him, slipping her hand down in his and squeezing it gently “If there’s any way for her to find her way back to you she will. She loves you so much” 

He squeezed her hand back, wishing he could offer her some word of comfort. You would want him to, that was your best friend but any word fell flat on his lips. He didn’t blame her by no means, he would never do that simply because he knew you. If an innocent person was in danger around you, especially a kid? Nothing would’ve stopped you from saving them. Even at the expense of yourself.  “This isn’t your fault Erin” he whispered, his voice shaking slightly and he could hear her inhale sharply before she said “I called her to this task force Mouse” 

He cut his eyes up at her and saw tears sliding down her face “Don’t mourn her yet Erin, please. I can’t…I can’t handle that” she nodded, wiping at her eyes “I’m sorry” and turned to walk out. Jay looked back at him then at the door “I’ll go check on her. If you need anything man, just yell.I’ll be right outside” 

Mouse listened to Jay leave and thought to himself, how would Jay ever give him what he needed? What he needed was for you to wake up. For those beautiful eyes to be looking back at him, that smile you had anytime you were hurt and trying to hide it plastered on your face and you joking about the fact that you wanted a vacation to New York City but maybe not like this. That was what he needed.  

He leaned up to let his hand brush against yours, fingers curling around yours “Baby, I don’t know if you can hear me but I’m here. Jay’s here too and Erin. The moment Erin called me and Jay got on a plane. I haven’t left your side. I’m not leaving your side. You are everything to me, you hear me? Everything. So I really need you to wake up. Whatever you want is yours. Every argument the rest of our lives you’ve now won before they ever start. You want to steal my coffee every day? It’s yours. Hog the blankets? Please take em. Have the water so hot in the shower I swear it’s gonna scald us both? It’ll be fine, we know plenty of good doctors. I just need you to wake up..Please baby wake up” he could feel the tears flowing down his face but he didn’t care you were still holding on for something, he was praying for the first time in his life that the something was him.He was praying that you were fighting to come back to him. He couldn’t do this without you. He didn’t want to.

When the twenty four hour mark hit, doctors swarmed your room. It seemed like you shocked most of the hospital by making it that long. Mouse stood back with Erin and Jay watching as the doctors went over your injuries with each other, talking about running more tests and further treatments.

“What now?” Jay asked, breaking their conversation because so far he’d been the one out the three of them to talk to the medical team the most. He had no choice but to hold it together, for Mouse and Erin both. “Detective Halstead, we’re doing everything we can for her” the doctor assured them but about that time your hand twitched.

“She moved,” Mouse whispered and stepped forward. The doctors all turned towards you but to Mouse’s horror you started to seize, he could see red stains start to seep through the bandages covering your body and something started coming out of the tube down your throat “Get them out of here” the doctor told Jay nodded towards Mouse and Erin. 

“Fuck you, I’m not leaving her” Mouse fought, struggling against Jay who was trying to grab his arm. He’d promised you he wouldn’t leave your side. “Officer Gerwitz you don’t want to see this” a nurse assured him, grabbing his other arm he turned to look at her and saw the tears in her eyes and this time when his legs went out from under him no one was there to catch him. His knees buckled and he hit the floor on them, watching as the doctors and nurses moved around your bed.

He was helpless to move, hell he couldn’t form a thought as he watched them shock your body, it jolting off the bed. “Greg, come on man. Don’t be in here for this” Jay tried, choking back a sob as his wide eyes landed on the bed as well. “I’m not leaving her” he whispered, even as the movements of the medical team ceased and they called the words that stopped his own heart beating in his chest “Time of death one eleven p.m.”

Mouse sat on the front pew of the church in his dress uniform, staring at your casket that was covered in the CPD flag. The unit was sitting around him, Erin was on his left side and Jay was on his right. He could’ve cared less. He was alone. You were gone.

He gripped his dogtags in his hand, the ring he’d never given you now rested on the chain. He had planned to slip it on your finger the moment you got home from New York. He’d never dreamt you getting home would’ve been in a body bag. The little girl you’d saved, Clarissa. She’d gotten her parents to fly her out for the funeral. She’d spoken with his blessing. 

She’d hugged him and told him she was so sorry you were gone. He’d tried to act like anything she said mattered, Erin had given him a small nod so maybe it had seemed like it did to him. He was glad the little girl was safe, that much was true. These niceties, the apologies they wouldn’t bring you back. They wouldn’t fix the gaping hole in his chest. They wouldn’t give him a reason to get up every day.

Hank stood at the front of the church and nodded to the unit. They would carry you out to the hearse then carry you to your grave. The last time Mouse would have you in his arms in any way would be helping to carry you to your grave. They’d wanted him to not help but what kind of man would he be if he couldn’t carry the woman he loved to the end? 

He stood with his team, positioning his cover on his head, tears streaming down his face as they all took their positions on your casket. Him and Erin were in front. They lifted you up and walked as one out of the church. Nothing had ever felt heavier than the weight of that casket, knowing it carried you inside.

At the cemetery they spoke of you. How you lived, how you loved. How you died being a hero. Mouse stood to the side, blue eyes glued to the light grey casket. One by one those of your unit were allowed to place a photo or something inside. Erin placed a photo of you, her and Nadia. Jay put his lucky keychain, Adam put a coin Makayla had asked him to give you, Kim had a stuffed animal from their niece. Kevin had three red roses. One from him, one from his brother and one from his sister.

When Hank looked over at him he walked over to the casket, footsteps slowing when he got near it. The dress Erin and your aunt picked looked exactly like something you’d wear and the funeral home had done a good job. You almost looked like you were asleep. Almost. He laid the dogtags across your chest “I’m sorry you never got this ring. I’m sorry I never made you my wife. I love you and always will” he whispered then slowly closed the casket, staring at your face until the last moment possible.

Mouse sat on the bed, photos of you scattered around him. Your smiling face looking back at him from every one. Your pillow still vaguely smelled of your shampoo, your coffee mug was still in the strainer, the last load of laundry you’d asked him to get out of the dryer and he’d forgotten still sat in the machine. The candle you loved sat half burnt next to the bed, the movie you and him planned to finish when you got home was still saved on the dvr.

He tried. He tried for weeks, he tried. The pain was ripping him apart more and more every day. He found a new dealer, it was fairly easy.  He was high more days than sober now. The very thing you’d always feared, he’d gone back to his old ways but who was there to care? He’d lost the only reason he had for breathing, the very air in his lungs. He clicked his laptop, watching the video of you and him Jay had taken at the halloween party a few months before. You were laughing, arms around his waist and looking at him like he was the most important thing “Forever and a day Gerwitz?”  just hearing your voice over the video made tears hit his eyes as he heard his own voice reply “Forever and a day love”

He stared at the bottle in his hand. It was enough, he’d made sure of it. He couldn’t do this anymore. He had to be with you. The pain was too much. He’d considered just using his gun but he knew Jay would find him and he couldn’t do that to him. This way he’d just go to sleep and wouldn’t wake up. A lot less for Jay to find.

He sat the envelope with Jay’s name on the laptop and opened the bottle along with the bourbon. He’d see you again and the pain would stop. That was all that mattered.

Jay walked slowly into the apartment, calling Mouse’s name out. He knew something was wrong but he hadn’t expected what awaited him either.

Jay and Erin sat together between yours and Mouse’s graves. Hank had pulled some strings, his death had been ruled a heart attack so he’d gotten a proper CPD burial and they’d made sure it was right next to you where he belonged. Hank had even footed the bill for your headstones to read “Loving Husband” and “Loving Wife” ; it was only suitable. Not even death stopped the love you two had for each other.

“Have you read his letter yet?” she asked and he shook his head and fished it out then held it out to her “Here, you do it” she took it then cleared her throat: 

Jay, I’m sorry that I know you’ll be the one to find me. I wished there was someone else but we both know with her gone there isn’t. I’ve tried man, I really have. I can’t continue to live in a world she’s not in. She was always the air in my lungs and every day without her I suffocate more and more.When I met her I found my reason to keep going and the day I lost her I lost that reason. If there’s a life after this I will find her in it and love her it it, if there isn’t at least the pain will stop. Please don’t hold onto guilt over me and don’t let Erin hold onto guilt over her. We both knew our best friends loved us. Be happy man, if you find love don’t wait for anything. See you in the next life brother, Mouse

They were both crying by the time Erin was through reading. Jay slipped an arm around her and pulled her over onto his shoulder “I just hope they’re together” she whispered. “Me too” he replied, the wind catching their words as it blew past your graves maybe carrying that message on.

One moment Mouse was swallowing a handful of pills and not fighting against the urge to close his eyes, the next he was laying on a patch of grass. Grass? How did he get outside? “Wake up Greg” he heard your voice and felt your hand on his face and for a moment thought he was hallucinating, the pills hadn’t worked. They’d just caused this.

He felt the air move around him then your other hand went to the opposite side of his face and he heard your light laughter “I swear if you don’t open those gorgeous blue eyes Gerwitz” he slowly opened his eyes and you were kneeled in front of him, real as day. Your hair was in a braid like you always wore it during summer, you were wearing a light blue shirt with cut off shorts and sneakers. You looked happy and healthy.

About that time the tech stepped to the door and called you both back knowing if any way possible you wanted to stay together.

They would fumble it and you knew it would be back on all of your doorsteps by monday. You walked down to the parking lot with Jay, Hailey and Kev. When he pushed the bedroom door open he found you curled up in the center of the bed fast asleep, from the looks of it you’d barely gotten your boots and jacket off before you crashed. Maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea.

He slipped his own jacket and boots off and slipped into the bed before you, slipping his arm around your waist. A smile slipped onto his face when you wiggled back against his chest then settled again once you were close to him. Yeah life could be so much worse than it currently was.

You’d meant to just lay across the bed for a few minutes but the next thing you realized it was a little after seven and Mouse was curled up behind you. “Baby?” you whispered, turning to face him. His eyes slowly opened, a smile slipping onto his face “What time is it?” “A little after seven”

“We have dinner reservations at seven forty” you raised an eyebrow “We do?” he nodded “Yup” “And why didn’t you tell me?” you asked and he laughed “It was a surprise” you shook your head “I love you Greg” he smiled “I love you too. Let’s get ready. I don’t want to be late”

“Are you sure I look ok?” you asked Mouse for probably the hundredth time. You were wearing a simple outfit. Jeans, a nice top and your favorite boots. He let his eyes trail down your body “Look amazing to me” you rolled your eyes “Why do me or Hailey ever bother asking you and Jay how we look? You two are hopeless!”

He grinned “Sorry?” you shook your head, “Don’t be. I love you anyways” and followed him out to his truck. He opened the passenger side door for you and you grinned “What a gentleman” before he walked around to get in the driver’s side. You weren’t sure where you were going for dinner but he seemed excited.

When you pulled up to the waterfront you cut your eyes at him “Dinner reservation?” he grinned “Well dinner set up” you nodded as killed the engine then walked around to open the door for you and offered you his hand. You laced your fingers with his and smiled “Greg Gerwitz did you set up a picnic for us?” he shrugged “I may have had some assistance” you shook your head “Why are you so sweet to me?”

He shrugged one shoulder “Love of my life, my actual soul mate. The woman meant for me?” you felt your entire body warm at his words “I love you” he smiled “I love you too. Did I mention it’s also a full moon?” your eyes widened “A full moon, waterfront picnic? You are a little too perfect Gerwitz”

After the two of you ate you were talking and his phone chimed. When he checked it you raised an eyebrow “What is going on?” he shook his head “Nothing” but the glint in his eyes and grin on your face told you something was.

He slipped his hand back into the picnic basket then stood to walk around the table you two were sitting at. You watched him curiously and your eyes widened when he got in front of you and got down on one knee before taking your left hand. He pulled up the box he’d had hidden in his hand “Y/N Kidd, You are the love of my life. My other half. My soul mate. The one woman I know without a shadow of a doubt that I was put on this earth to love. From the moment I laid eyes on you when you came barreling into me and Jay threatening to kill Adam over your broken coffee mug I felt it. There has never been anyone like you and there will never be anyone like you. You breathed life back into me when I was just existing.  Even when we drifted apart my heart, my very soul knew who they belonged to and led me home to you. Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

You nodded, tears choking you to the point you weren’t sure your voice would work “Yes Greg” you managed and he smiled “Yes?” “Yes!” you repeated. He opened the box and you gasped. He kept his promise. It matched Stella’s engagement ring, the only difference was hers was yellow gold and this one was white gold, just like your crescent rings. “Greg” you whispered as he slipped the ring on your finger “Me and Kelly promised you two  years ago, they’d match” you nearly dove into his arms to crash your lips against his. He held you close, mouth moving against yours until you heard a loud whistle that you recognised anywhere. You pulled back from him and looked up to see Stella and Kelly walking towards the two of you, both of them grinning.

You looked back at Mouse “Your phone going off was those two being in position wasn’t it?” he shrugged “Had to get you photos didn’t I?” you shook your head “Have I mentioned I love you Greg” he grinned “Not in the last five seconds so I’ll take it” 

Stella laughed “Well let me see. I mean I helped shop for it but I want to see it on” you looked at Mouse, considering you were still halfway in his lap and held your hand out to Stella, she let out a low whistle and looked from Mouse to Kelly “I’ll be damned little sister we finally wrangled them both down”

Kelly shook his head “Sweetheart I think I speak for us both when I say you two have had us wrangled for years” Mouse grinned “He’s really not wrong”

Mouse’s mouth moved across your neck, kissing every inch of skin he could get access to. You gasped when his hips snapped into yours, hitting that spot deep inside of you as his fingers rubbed tight circles onto your clit “Fuck baby, right there” you moaned as you felt that building pressure burst as your orgasm hit you.

My wife” he stared at you for a moment then a broad grin slipped onto his face “I’m not your boyfriend anymore sweetheart, I’m your fiance now” you shook your head “Guess you figured out a way to get rid of that title after all huh?” he nodded “Guess I did”

You pulled him into a kiss “Well come wrap your arms around your finance so she can get some sleep” the smile he gave you was one of the most gorgeous sights you’d ever seen before he said “Yes ma’am” and wrapped you up in his arms.

Greg "Mouse" Gerwitz x Reader

When you take a place on a task force and get hurt Mouse has to face his entire world falling down

You sat in the middle of the bed in the hotel room holding your laptop across your legs as Mouse’s face came into view. A smile split your face the moment you saw him “Well hey there handsome” “Hey beautiful. How’s New York?” he asked and you sighed “Not as good as Chicago, you’re not here”

When Sergeant Benson and Erin had asked you to join the task force SVU and Erin’s team had put together for a six week operation you’d been on the fence. That was a long time in your opinion to be away from home, from Mouse and your unit but you could do some good well a lot of good. You’d hesitantly agreed with Voight’s blessing on the job front and Mouse’s blessing on the personal front. After Erin left Chicago that was his push to join the academy and as soon as he could Hank pulled him for intelligence. You loved working with him and knew he loved having his girlfriend and best friend right there at his side most days. 

He smiled “I miss you too love. You don’t have much longer and you’ll be home” you turned to get comfortable against the headboard and he grinned “Taking me to bed with you Detective?” you laughed lightly “Why yes officer Gerwitz, just don’t report me to the ivory tower. Might see it as me using the fact that I’m higher ranking than you to get you in bed” “Lucky me I say” he teased. 

You listened while he caught you up on things you’d missed in Chicago and you told him about some of the things in New York. “Promise me when I get home we don’t have to leave our apartment for like two days solid. I just want to curl up in your arms” you told him and the smile he gave you made your heart flip “How could I turn that down?” you smiled “I love you so damn much Greg” he grinned “I love you too sweetheart. Get some rest, you have another bust tomorrow. I don’t want you tired going into it” you nodded “Tell everyone I said hey. I’ll call you around noon your time” “I’ll be waiting”

It was a little after twelve and Jay knew Mouse was getting worried even if he was trying his best not to show it. You always checked in right on time with him. When Jay’s phone rang he nearly knocked it off the desk trying to answer it and when Erin’s voice hit his ear his heart dropped to his feet “Jay?”

He hadn’t really spoken to her except via text since she’d left. You and her kept in contact regularly hence you taking the place on the task force. If she was calling him…. “Jay, are you there?” she asked and he replied “Yeah I’m here”

She took a deep breath and he heard her voice shake at the end. Something was wrong, really wrong. “Is Mouse around you?” he cut his eyes across the room where Mouse was texting you again “Yeah, you want to talk to him?” “I can’t Jay…He he doesn’t need to hear this from me” he could hear the tears in her voice “Erin what happened” he didn’t even think about the fact that he probably shouldn’t have said her name but Mouse’s eyes flew up and everyone in the room turned to look at him.

“There was..there was a perp..he had a hostage and Y/N drew the fire to herself..everything happened so damn fast…I promise you I tried to get to her…I tried to stop him..” 

Mouse stood up from his desk to walk towards Jay only to feel his entire world shift when Jay asked Erin “Is she dead?” The next few moments were the longest of his life. He could read Jay too well. He could feel his legs try to go out from under him but Kevin moved to grab his arm. “Yeah I’ll call you” Jay hung up and walked towards him.

“Is she dead Jay? Is the love of my life dead?” he asked and Jay took a deep breath “It’s bad man. You can try to get a plane but she might not make it until you land” he nodded “I’ve got to try” “I’m going with you” Jay told him, looking back at Voight who’d come out of his office and caught the  end of the phone call “Go”

Erin sat just outside of surgery, your blood drying on her skin. She could only keep replaying those moments in her mind. The bullets tearing through your vest, how your body dropped. When she got to your side the way you’d looked at her and how scared you’d looked when you’d told her “It doesn’t hurt Erin…why doesn’t it hurt?” 

This was her fault, she’d called you onto this task force. If you died she killed her best friend. Her hand was wrapped around Mouse’s dog tags you always wore, it didn't feel right leaving them in a patient belonging bag when she knew how much they meant to you. “Tell Greg I love him” was the last words you told her before you’d lost consciousness. Your heart stopped and she’d done CPR until the ambulance got there. She only hoped it was enough.

Mouse was numb the entire plane ride. He wanted to cry, he wanted to scream, he wanted to break down but it was like the entire world was holding its breath. His entire being needed to see you, needed to see if you were alive. He couldn’t think of a world without you in it. What was he without you? You were everything to him, the reason he was still here. The reason he’d fought to stay clean when he’d nearly slipped after getting the job at CPD. You were there helping him every step of the way. You were the one person who never got annoyed with him, never yelled at his rambling when his mind wandered.

You were the love of his life. Every thought of the future was of you. If there was no you there was no him. If you died? He had no reason to keep living. Erin had said you drew fire from a civilian, a kid that was about fourteen. That was you to your core, always saving someone even at your own expense. If he lost you, who was supposed to save him? 

When they landed in New York Sergeant Benson had uniforms waiting to take them to the hospital. You were still in surgery but at least that meant you were still alive. You were still holding on.

“Erin!” she flinched when she heard Mouse’s voice. She glanced up and saw him and Jay walking towards her. His eyes went to her shirt, jeans and hands. “Is that her blood?” she nodded slowly “Mouse, I never meant for this to happen..” 

“I know” he whispered, eyes glued to her bloody hands. She held out his dog tags “She made me promise to tell you she loves you” Mouse took the dog tags in his hand, fingers tracing over the drying blood that he knew was yours “Erin, how bad is it?” He saw tears slip down her face as she said “She told me it didn’t hurt, she was so afraid because it didn’t hurt” he pulled her into his arms and they both finally broke sobbing against each other, one for her best friend, one for the woman he loved. Jay stood to the side not knowing how to comfort either of them.

The surgery took a total of five and a half hours. Your insides were shredded from the bullets. When the surgeons finally walked out they asked for your family so Erin, Mouse and Jay stood up. “This is her boyfriend and best friend” Jay explained so the doctor nodded “She’s alive but in critical condition. The next twenty four hours will tell if she makes it or not. The bullets did extensive damage. We repaired what we could, it's up to her body to do the rest”

“Thank you” Jay replied knowing neither Erin or Mouse was in the shape to talk. “Can they see her?” he asked and the surgeon shook his head “I’m afraid only one visitor is permitted in ICU” 

Erin looked at Mouse “You go” he nodded “Ok” the surgeon waved him through “A nurse will show you the way”

A nurse led Mouse through the hallway to your room. When she walked him inside he froze at the foot of the bed. The body laying there didn’t even look like you. It was like you were already dead, there was no life left. Wires and tubes stuck out of you in every direction. Bandages covered every inch of your body and dried blood covered your face. 

He walked to the side of the bed, fingers lightly skimming your hand, careful of the iv. “Is there any hope for her waking up? I don’t want the sugar coated answer. This woman is everything to me” he turned to look at the nurse and saw the answer in her eyes before she ever spoke “If she wakes up sir I will believe in miracles” then turned and walked out of the room.

Mouse watched her go then looked back at you. The tube in your mouth helping you to breath making a soft noise with every inhale “They don’t know you do they baby?” he whispered, eyes filling with tears. “Wake up for me love, please? I need you, the world needs you. Please don’t leave me. It feels like I just got you. I can’t lose you now”

He knew it was probably hopeless but you’d never given up on him. He wasn’t giving up on you until the moment your heart stopped beating for good, even then he’d still love you with everything he had and probably wouldn’t be far behind. There was nothing on this earth for him if you weren’t in it.

“I’m gonna stay with Jay for a few days” you were frozen in place, staring at the bags on the floor next to Will’s feet. “Erin warned me when I fell for you. You Halsteads love hard but run when it gets hard” your voice was so damn low you weren’t sure he even heard you until you saw the small flinch that let you know he registered your words.

He shook his head “It’s not that sweetheart” you finally raised your eyes from the bags to look at him, your eyes meeting his “Bullshit. One day you’re talking about rings then the next Nat’s back in town and you need some time apart? Put some effort Will and actually call this what it is. You figured out you fucked up being with me. Just leave already, don’t fucking leave me in limbo”

“I love you, I’ll call you tomorrow” he whispered and took a step towards you like he was going to try to kiss you but you took a step back “Don’t call me. I’ll be at the station house and I don’t need everyone I work with knowing my boyfriend is leaving me at least not until he’s man enough to fully do so”

He nodded “Be safe on shift” and turned to walk out of the door. It took everything in you to not find something to throw after him. When the door closed you slid down the wall, a curse of his name slipping from your lips. You should’ve listened to Lindsay.

“Hey sweetie, you good?” you glanced up to see Stella standing in front of you. You nodded “Yeah Kidd, I’m good” she motioned to the book in your hand “Well you’ve been on that page for the last two hours” You shrugged “It’s a really good page”

She shook her head and sat down next to you “I’m not trying to be nosy but if you weren’t ok, you could talk to me. I’ve been through pretty much any bad crap in a relationship you could go through” you turned your head to look at her and she smiled slightly “Sylvie mentioned seeing Nat” you nodded “So the entire station house knows I’m getting left already?”

Her eyes widened “Halstead left you?” you shook your head “Not yet, as of right now he just needs some time and is staying at Jay’s but we both know what that means”

She slipped her arm around you and pulled you over onto her shoulder “Want me to get Kelly to kick his ass? Cause I will” you laughed lightly “No, it’s just I knew we had some things that needed to be fixed but I didn’t think we were broken Stel” “It’ll be ok”

“Do you love Y/N?” Jay had asked Will the night before. He’d answered “Yes” without hesitation because he knew that he loved you. “Then why are you here? Look I fucked up with Erin by not talking to her. Whatever is going on inside of your head because of Nat being in town, don’t lose Y/N over it man”

“Since when did you get smart?” he asked Jay who shrugged as he took a sip of his beer “About the time you got dumb apparently”

Will wanted to call you, talk to you and explain the needed time apart wasn’t due to Nat as much as the reminder of the relationship he’d fucked up and how easily he had fucked it up. He knew he loved you, he knew he wanted a future with you, he just didn’t know how to explain what was going on inside his head. You asked him not to call you while you were on shift and he was trying to respect that.

 “Trauma incoming!” Maggie called out and he stood to respond but she shook her head “Not you Halstead! Rhodes!” Connor came running and Will stared at Maggie “Why not me?” about the time the sliding doors from the ambulance bay came open and he heard Sylvie Brett’s voice “A piece of rebar impaled her side. She was clearing a floor and found a weak spot. Took Casey and Severide two minutes to get her dug out. She lost consciousness in the rig”

He felt his legs get weak when he saw your still form on the gurney. “Will back up” Maggie told him but he couldn’t have moved if he wanted to “Connor please” Connor looked up and met his eyes “I got her. Just let me help her”

He let Maggie move him by his arm. He heard her ask someone to call Jay but didn’t register who. He had to stand by and watch helplessly as you were wheeled by, Connor, Ethan and April working already in an effort against the multiple injuries he could on top of the rebar.

Jay found Will sitting in the hallway outside of surgery. “Hey man, have they told you anything?” Will slowly raised his head to look at his younger brother “No, she um she lost a lot of blood. The rebar punctured her spleen. They’re trying to repair it. On top of that she has a concussion, dislocated shoulder and smoke inhalation”

Jay squatted down in front of him, putting a hand on his shoulder “She’s strong man. This place has the best doctors, you know that. She’ll be ok” Will swallowed hard, tears escaping “She thought I wanted to leave her Jay. That’s the last conversation we had and I couldn’t even explain to her it wasn’t that” 

“Then explain to her when she wakes up. Don’t you dare give up on her now” Jay told him and he nodded “I don’t know what I’ll do if she doesn’t” Jay shook him slightly “Don’t think about that! Dammit she’ll wake up” he nodded “I just need her to be ok Jay. I need her to know it’s her I want, her I love” 

Jay half smiled, tears in his eyes at seeing his brother upset “Then tell her when she wakes up”

Everything hurt, the last thing you remembered was Herrman’s voice telling you the north end of the building was cleared. You forced your eyes open and the harsh fluorescents forced you to close them “Damn that’s bright” you groaned and heard April’s voice say “I’ll turn them down”

April? You slowly opened your eyes again and was met with her smiling face. You realized you were in the hospital. Memories of the floor giving way hit you all at once. “How’d I do?” you asked and she laughed lightly “You’ll be sore and on very light duty but all in all you did ok” you smiled and tried to sit up so she helped you. You glanced around the room and saw what you knew was Will’s jacket draped over the chair in the corner. She followed your line of sight and smiled “He’s on the phone with your sister. He’s gonna be upset he wasn’t here when you woke up. He hasn’t left”

“Guilt is a funny thing” you whispered and saw the confusion in her eyes so you waved a hand “Can I have some water?” she nodded and grabbed a cup, helping you drink. About the time she turned to put the cup back the door opened and your eyes locked with Will’s “You’re awake” he whispered and you smiled slightly “I’m harder to knock down than that” 

April smiled “I’ll give you two a few minutes. Just hit the button if you need anything” you watched her walk out then finally looked back at Will “I’m not dead. You tamed your conscience, you can leave now” then turned your head before he could see the tears. “Baby, please”  he spoke softly, hand lightly brushing yours.

“Will, I’ll be ok” you tried, finally swallowing enough emotion to look at him again. He nodded “You might but I won’t. I don’t want Nat baby. When she got to town it just…it reminded me how bad I messed up things with her…the fact that she nearly hated me and I couldn’t handle you hating me..and I well I guess I caused that anyways didn’t I?”

“I could never hate you Will” you whispered and he smiled “Then give me another chance. Let me prove that I want you, only you. That I love you with every bit of my heart” you felt tears slip from your eyes “If this is just because I’m hurt..” he shook his head “No, I swear..here” he held out his phone to the text messages between you and him.

There were messages saying the same things he’d just said hours before you ever rolled into med. You looked up “One chance Will. I can’t do this to my heart again because fuck I love you” he smiled “I promise I’ll prove myself this time, prove how much I love you” you nodded “Then come kiss me Halstead”
