I really didn’t cry much! :0 I can think of three and only three different points throughout the year, and that’s it!!

I cried because of a Ghostbur scene :’) The one and only time I have cried over DSMP or Ghostbur. It was during Doomsay (which, Pinestripe, I’m not sure if you know about or not? If you’re curious just let me know and I’d be happy to explain :D) and there’s a specific scene where Phil and Ghostbur have a deeply emotional conversation. I’d only ever watched Ghostbur’s POV of this convo, so seeing Phil’s POV (I was watching Phil’s stream) was… a lot. His facial expressions, his gestures, and just hearing Ghostbur’s heartbroken voice on the other end. It made me really sad and really angry, because Phil was not treating Ghostbur the best :/

He’s such a lovely man, with a very unique + endearing personality, and he loves poetry and he’s an amazing writer and he’s sweet and he’s nice and he’s not annoying or immature like a lot of boys his age, and overall he’s just… a very cool, very genuine, very fun guy :)

I kinda wasn’t expecting to become friends with him, because we didn’t interact much last year and also had our own little friend circles that didn’t overlap much.

OH RIGHT i’m on a S&B reread and here are my thoughts on the first book:

> I WANT TO START OFF WITH: this is not a bad read at all. the writing itself is pretty good, considering this is bardugo’s first book. like yes, it’s a product of its time, so it can come off as pretty standard chosen one fantasy, etc etc, but it’s fun to read

> the d*rkling is somehow even creepier. the scene where he tells alina he will torture and kill mal if she doesn’t do as he says and then only offers mercy when alina agrees to kiss him is so 🤢

> sorry to book mal stans but i don’t agree with the take that show!mal is the same as book!mal and the only reason we like him better in the show is because we got to see his side of the story. there are many lines in the book that i straight up cannot picture show!mal saying. it’s not a bad thing or good thing, just that they definitely read very different to me, especially when you get into the rest of the books

i’m about halfway through the second book now and trying to imagine how the show will tackle the material. a lot of people had a problem with how they catch the second amplifier within the first act and the rest of the book is dealing with how alina and nikolai build up a following for the sun saint, and it’ll definitely be interesting to see how the show will make that engaging to watch. personally i didn’t mind that there isn’t much action since i do find the political stuff intriguing, but since this is a fantasy show after all, people Will be expecting some turning gears that isn’t just talking and more talking. also mal isn’t as annoying as i remember so far, but there are Definitely scenes where i’m like yikes, a little possessive of alina much? ANYWAY i’m super excited to see season 2 content and ready for more genyalina vibes

Just an average dose for someone your height and weight Remus, or, the latest recorded equivalent in those receipts—wow that spell was almost holy, i feel dizzy—'Kay! Should be fine in theory, but we'd need to keep watch just in case.

Rowan let him lean on her. She moved her arm around his shoulder and pushed him so he was standing “You’re getting fancy bed privileges just for tonight. Hopefully the meds will have worked by tomorrow”

“i’m gonna find a way to burn down your bed in my sleep. watch me” He yawned out. His eyes were half closed.

His feet were barely even moving as she helped him over to the bedroom. His whole body went lax to the point of her pretty much dragging him with her.

He collapsed onto the bed. She tucked him in before moving down under the covers right next to him. He shoved his face into her hair like it was a pillow and held onto her as if he was an octopus trying to suffocate her to death. Just like he’d done every time he’d sneaked into her bunk bed as a kid when he couldn’t sleep.

“g’night” Rowan mumbled out. Remus had already passed out. She told herself she was going to stay awake to make sure nothing bad happened with him, but the exhaustion took over and soon enough she’d fallen asleep.

When she woke up again it was in the middle of the day. The sun was blaring in through the window. The blanket had gently been moved over her. She shot up in bed as soon as he realized Remus wasn’t there anymore. She threw off the blanket and ran out into the living room.

Remus was sitting by the table. Music was playing quietly enough so it wouldn’t wake her. He was leant over his sketchbook, drawing. A bowl with some slightly old bread sat on the table.

It was fine. He was fine.

“I’d started to think you’d gone into a coma” He said without looking up from the drawing “I had ordered a cake to celebrate and everything”

“How funny” She moved to sit on top of the table “Is the headache still there?”

“Nah. I think it worked? The pain is mostly gone. The uh hallucinations aren’t as bad. I uh I haven’t even felt any phantom hands today. I mean it’s not all gone, just looking at the knife in the kitchen made all the intrusive thoughts go off but it’s a start?”

“It’s a great start!!” Rowan exclaimed. 

She looked at what he was drawing. It was a quick sketch of the goblin king and the main twins from his story. It was usually a good sign. Often when he was too caught up in delusions and flashbacks he didn’t draw them.

“I reheated some challah by the way. For breakfast” Remus continued. He took a piece of it and handed it to her before holding his own piece of bread out as if to toast. “Healing bread”

They clinked the bread pieces together “Healing bread” She replied with a smile.

Immediately after putting the bread in his mouth Remus grimaced and spat it out again “I overestimated how much better the meds were making me. The tube stays for a while”

“You’re cleaning that bread up later” She chuckled out.

It was quiet for a little while. Rowan ate the breakfast while Remus drew. Until he very unsurely asked.

“Hey Ro?”

“Mhm?”

“Ever since realizing I uh might be into them every time I’ve thought about Jan and Remy the uh phantom pain have gotten worse and I’ve gotten a bunch of intrusive thoughts and all that but I think the meds are helping against that. So want to hear me actually talk about them for once?”

Rowan’s eyes went huge. She slammed the bread down and leant closer “YES! Gush!! Gossip!! Spill it all!! I need to know what you see in them so I can bully you ANd them about it later!!!”

* A teen with a love for cryptids and weird things. Isaiah is quite sociable, which surprises many since he always has his nose in a book and he gives off ✨ introverted vibes ✨ at first glance. He can ramble your ear off about bigfoot or aliens or whatever other thing he’s into at the moment, but he tries not to if someone doesn’t seem as into it as he is- though there are times when he just...forgets. If he has no topics to talk about, he goes back to things he finds interesting- which is not always what other people find interesting. Morbid or creepy fun facts aren’t always okay to say. Not everyone needs to know that your lungs are the only organ that can float. That’s just gross, man. Sometimes it can lead to funny moments but mostly it leads to people seeing him as odd or annoying. He doesn’t mean to bother others, and it does upset him when he unintentionally ends up doing just that- He’s just trying to start a conversation, y’know? Even if his conversation starters aren’t always...the most fun to other people. When Isaiah sets his sights on doing something, it’s hard for him to stop. He can get so caught up he’ll forget when to take a break, or he might just not want to stop and will push himself anyway. He seems to have an issue with admitting he’s failed at something, as he will stubbornly persist until he can succeed. He has all the time in the world now. He could pursue whatever he wants if only he wasn’t confined to the void. Isaiah has a deep interest for all the weird things in the world, always looking for the answers to the wildest of things. And honestly at times it can seem a little...ridiculous or silly, yeah, but he doesn’t care. It’s not like he craves fame or anything from it either. If anything his wild theories, coupled with his nerdy glasses, have been a source of bullying for him in the past. Isaiah just simply likes a good mystery. It’s like he can’t stay away until its solved, and that sort of stuff can get him into trouble. He does not know, or care, about his limits- if he even has limits anymore. He sure doesn’t have physical ones, that’s for sure. No need to eat, sleep, or drink. And, of course with him being dead, he has basically nothing to lose now. But back when he was alive, he was rather reckless in the pursuit of knowledge. After all, you’d have to be stupid or suicidal to climb the Forbidden Mountain, though in fairness to Isaiah he did not intend to get lost.. Additionally, Isaiah tries to keep the peace if he senses things are getting tense, but if people are being hostile to him he gets anxious. He is not a confrontational person and that sort of thing stresses him out, especially if other person is getting aggressive. He will still defend himself but he may not be as assertive as he should be, and he may shrink in on himself and get quiet if things get really bad. Isaiah wants what’s good for everyone, but he is by no means a good mediator or can handle himself in an argument. But he’s friendly to others and overall pretty chill so long as you’re not a jerk, then he’ll just get really quiet. You can expect him to get along with most, especially if they share his interests. And if not, that’s okay too. He can honestly talk about anything and still have fun.

Entry 26: None of This Makes Any Sense

Last chapter, I opened up a chest and found a pair of boots. Now, boots are one of the boost items in the game, permanently boosting your movement. I gave them to the only worthy unit: Kenshi. I also gave him all of my other stat-boosting items. He’s actually kinda strong now.

Support: Hinoka/Corrin

C: Corrin asks Hinoka why she became a Sky Knight. Hinoka explains that, after Corrin was kidnapped, she became a Sky Knight so she could try to rescue her

B: Hinoka talks about how Mikoto tried to talk her out of becoming a Sky Knight and how she was a bratty stepdaughter as a kid. Side note, was it ever stated before this that Mikoto wasn’t Hinoka’s mother? I mean, I know we know it from the incest Supports, but it wasn’t ever stated before this. Also, considering that Hinoka is younger than Corrin, but has a different mother, but thinks that Sumeragi is Corrin’s father, yet Sumeragi and Mikoto were still married when Corrin was kidnapped, how does that timeline work out? Like, I know that Mikoto showed up with Corrin after Sumeragi’s first wife died, but Hinoka doesn’t know that. From her perspective, King Sumeragi married her mother, divorced her, married Mikoto, divorced Mikoto, remarried her mother, divorced her again, then remarried Mikoto. I mean, I guess Sumeragi could have had multiple wives at once like Garon, but that’s never stated. The other royals seem to be pretty interested in monogamy. None of this makes any sense! How does Hinoka think Corrin is Sumeragi’s kid? How does anyone?

A: Corrin tells Hinoka’s pegasus how awesome Hinoka is. Hinoka overhears. The two of them complement each other.

S: Hinoka tells her pegasus that she was in love with Corrin when they were little kids. Ew. Then we get the stupid retcon letter so it’s cool. It isn’t, of course, see previous entries for my ranting.

Review: This one is fine, if a bit dull, assuming you don’t think about the brain aneurysm inflicting logic it implies.

Support: Mozu/Oboro

C: Oboro offers to dress Mozu up nicely because Mozu is super drab. Mozu says no.

B: Oboro shows Mozu another soldier she made look nice and Mozu accepts her help. 

A: Mozu, after taking off her nice princess outfit, feels sad to be a goshdarn plain ol' country bumpkin again. Oboro tells her it's the person that makes the outfit shine.

Review: Yeah it’s fine. Not great, but could be worse.

Support: Kaden/Rinkah

C: Kaden tries to befriend Rinkah. She brushes him off so he gives her candy.

B: Rinkah asks Kaden why he gave her candy. He explains that he thinks she must be lonely, being the only Flame Tribe person in the army, something he relates to.

A: Kaden finally befriends Rinkah. She jokes about murdering him for being annoying.

S: Kaden and Rinkah spend time together. Kaden says he loves her. Rinkah says she no longer thinks he's a pest and loves him too.

Review: I actually really like this one. Kaden and Rinkah have good chemistry and Kaden empathizing with Rinkah’s loneliness is really nice.

C: Kagero asks Subaki to teach her how to understand good art.

B: Kagero shows Subaki her art. Subaki says Kagero can only make nightmarish paintings from "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" because she's making abstract art. Notably, he never says her art is bad.

A: Subaki tells Kagero that most artists aren't appreciated when they are alive and that she may be an artistic genius.

S: Subaki proposes to Kagero because she's naturally talented at art, while he has to work to be skilled.

Birthright Chapter 21: Burning Falls

Garon monologues about how he should probably execute Iago for failing so much. He laughs about his plan to kill Corrin, because he’s evil. Elise overhears this. Xander catches her spying and reminds her that Garon would totally hurt her, because Garon’s evil and Xander kinda doesn’t care. Elise starts crying and Xander reassures her that everything will be back to normal after the war. Except, you know, Corrin will be dead and everyone will hate Garon for killing her. But other than that everything will be fine! Xander also says he’s fighting for the greater good, which is so objectively false that I worry he’s suffering from a head injury.

Back with the good people, Ryoma receives a message saying that the Nohrian army is about to take Hoshido. Due to the time limit, the party takes a shortcut through a flaming river called Demon’s Fall.

Some of our old friends, the purple ghost dudes, show up, leading to a battle. This chapter is filled with rivers of lava that can only be crossed by creating bridges with Dragon Veins. Or using fliers. I used fliers. Also in this chapter are stone golems that look cool but can attack from five spaces away, which is a bit annoying.

The gang finds a secret tunnel to Windmire and continue on their journey.

Been having a weird/off week. But you know what’s made it better?

Spending some more time in Midvale with Supergirl Ep. 6x06, “Prom Again!”

Spoilers!

So! Last week was the fun shenanigans/set-up, THIS WEEK we get the emotional pay-offs and oooooh. So good. So good.

Historically, Supergirl kinda struggles to stick its landing when it comes to paying off its set-ups, but I think this episode is really solid in that regard.  

And thus, we begin! With the forest showdown! And I love it. Love every part of it. Love Kara flying in and freeing Nia and Brainy with her heat vision, love that one of Kenny and Kara’s go-to plays is called ‘Speed Racer’, love Brainy’s whole, ‘my buddy’s gonna BLAST YA if you don’t cooperate’ and Kara just. Threatens the bad guys from the shrubbery.

She’s supposed to be scary and intimidating with the heat vision eyes but dagnabbit...it’s just kind of cute.

Last week I completely forgot to mention how much I love that Kenny and Kara have go-to plays WITH NAMES. (NERDY names at that!) And also that Alex is so exasperated by it.

JUST YOU WAIT, KIDDO. 

Fast forward to the Fortress and everyone’s happy! The day is saved! The timeline is restored! Alex apologizes for being a bit of a grouch!

And Brainy doesn’t get the fist bump, d’awwwww. XD

Nia has a lovely chat with Kara wherein SHE is the elder hero who inspires the youths. Nice. NICE.

And THEN, the first of some good Danvers Sisters scenes...we’ll call this one ‘the mini-van chat.’ 

Kara apologizing about the ‘Zookeeper fight-y thing’ and the GLASSES FIDGET.

Shout out to the writers, who were ON-POINT with the dialogue for both parts, and shout out to the young actresses as well. It’s...honestly uncanny, how well they nailed playing Kara and Alex. 

(I mean, we knew this already, of course, but GOSH. What a wonderful showcase. So, so glad, that we got such a large Midvale story in the final season.)

Right, so, another dialogue highlight from the mini-van chat (but like, not in a silly way. More in a, ‘oh wow that’s very sweet’ way) Alex, to Kara about her choice: ‘It’s the right one because you made it.’

THESE KIDS.

Then we go to Nia and Brainy on the Legion Cruiser!

Nia’s outfit? Outstanding. Brainy’s mask? Admittedly a little distracting because it didn’t look like it was fitting quite right.

But A+ song choice for their dance, show. 

(Really, A+ song choices across the board. You can tell they were absolutely LOVING getting in all those needle drops.) 

And then we discover--ALL IS NOT WELL! THE TIMELINE IS STILL BROKEN!

Cat Grant has released the aliens! And she has been captured! And yet she remains heckin’ fearless!

Love that she calls Mitch ‘Mr. Blue Sky.’

It took me a while to warm up to this ‘new’ version of Cat Grant but this episode really gave her some fun stuff to do and yep, I dig it. Great stuff. 

Meanwhile, back at the prom...

I'm taking this moment to applaud the Supergirl folks for their very nice workarounds for ‘crowded’ locations this season thus far. The episodes have never felt like, overtly obvious in terms of Covid protocol impacts (I mean there are a few scenes here and there where you’re like, ‘oh, yeah, this is set up in this specific way to probably account for some production changes) but I’ve never felt that the episodes are losing anything, you know?

Case in point! Two episodes, set in a crowded high school! But most of the stuff takes place before/between classes, or outside!

(Specifically enjoyed all the outdoor stuff and natural lighting. It’s not quite the same as that LA sunshine, but. Still nice.)  

Anyways, in “Prom Again!” the action/discussions are set in the hallways/classrooms outside of the actual Prom. Inobtrusive! Makes sense for the story! Doesn’t compromise!

Gold stars for everyone. 

Kara and Kenny are BOTH unrelentingly cheesy--Kara even says as much--and it’s wonderful.

Because there’s KRYPTONITE! And also, a CLOAKED SPACESHIP, BLOCKING THE FALLING METEOR DEBRIS! And, you know, ALIEN HUNTERS THREATENING HIGH SCHOOLERS! And Kenny SACRIFICES HIMSELF FOR KARA!

(Well, okay. It’s tonight but you get the idea.)

Poor, sweet Kenny. Who feels WAY out of his depth as he’s imprisoned alongside Cat on the alien ship...but it does bring us one of her patented ‘tough love pep talks.’ Wherein she calls Kenny brilliant.

And also, Kendall.

Never change, Cat. Never change.

Also, “Go, go.”

Okay, some more rapid fire specifics that I enjoyed so that this list doesn’t get...too? Long? ...No promises.

100/10, excellent, love to see that Danvers Sisters angst in the Worst Timeline. Also? Alex’s desperate little headshake, silently pleading for Kara to NOT DO THE THING???? Devastating. In the best way.

THE WHOLE EPISODE(S) was a GOSHDARN DELIGHT, I TELL YA. (Did I say that last week? I might’ve said that last week, but I don’t care.)

And now, some slightly more in-depth, overall thoughts:

So, How ‘Bout Them Danvers: Not surprisingly, the girls end up in, if not the exact same place as the end of “Midvale”, then pretty darn close. I’m trying to avoid, like. All of fandom, these days, but unfortunately, the bad takes are numerous, and often untagged. So I did see a bunch of people insisting that Kenny living ‘ruined the Danvers’ relationship’ and that the show is ‘taking away everything that makes Kara Kara’

To which I say:

In the broadest terms, what needs to happen by episode’s end to match up with “Midvale”, and prep the kiddos for the stuff that happens in the Pilot - Kara needs to put the aspirations of super-ing on the backburner, and Alex needs to like. Not hate Kara, but also be committed to helping Kara keep her secret, you know...secret. 

All of these things are set up. I repeat: All. Of. Them.

And Kenny didn’t have to die!

(I will admit, I chuckled that they so blatantly teased an untimely demise for him...because I know it will annoy select corners of fandom.

Muhahahahaha.)

But anyways, back to those key ingredients for making a ‘Danvers Sisters in the same emotional place they were in @ Midvale’s end’ soup: Alex deals with that simmering resentment. Seeing Kara handle herself well in a super-ing context gives her that little, ‘hey, this isn’t so bad!’ outlook.

BUT INTERESTINGLY, in the Fixed Timeline, Alex and Kara don’t have that chat in the supply room, where Alex is like. ‘You CANNOT reveal your powers, BAD THINGS will happen if you do.’ 

That is saved for the Pilot!*

MEANWHILE. The Kara ingredients! She puts super-ing on hold. 

Her chat with Kenny functions as a replacement for her chat with J’onn-as-Not!Alura, in the sense that it’s here that she reveals that she didn’t choose to come to Midvale, she didn’t choose these powers. 

(...I can already sense fandom using those lines to prove their end-of-series theories and like. Ugh. Ugh.) 

But anyways. It’s also here that we get shades of Pilot!Kara, what with the season one conflict of being Super vs. being normal. 

It’s ALL THE SAME STUFF.

Fandom needs to like. Chill. 

And their (fake) concern for Kara’s characterization is entirely misplaced, because this was a really wonderful showcase for Kara in particular.

Like. The first episode was really Nia’s time to shine, and we still got solid Brainy and Nia action in this episode!

But man. That good Kara content.

THE CONTENT I CRAVE!

So speaking of good Kara content in particular, I LOVED Kara’s prom dress. It's got both a SKIRT. AND PANTS!

Amazing.

I know nothing of fashion, but it was very cute, very girly, and okay. Though I hate the comic, the one thing I actually liked about Future State is Kara’s costume. This was similar!

(Thank goodness it looked nothing like the prom dress from Rebirth. That...was a bit of a train wreck.)

(Look, not all comic artists are great clothes designers, it’s just how it is.)

We see the empowerment theme come up with Kara inspiring Kenny; he describes her as ‘an amazing light in a world of darkness’ and tells her that, ‘you changed me, Kara Zor-El.’

We love to see it. 

They also agree that stargazing and Monty Python make for the perfect prom these absolute NERDS I love them.

*Quick wibbly-wobbly, timey-whimey note WRT making this episode ‘fit’ with the Pilot: I’m not saying that it 100% does. There’s already the change with the Kryptonite, and the added info/awareness of the DEO. 

Those little changes, though, don’t really impact the overall arc of Kara and Alex, the way the emotional stuff might. 

Thus! The ‘Pilot’ of Earth Prime, and in fact, the ENTIRETY of the show’s run thus far most likely involved little differences throughout, but the emotional core is very close, if not the exact same.

BUT EITHER WAY, it doesn’t matter, because our Kara and Alex are still our Kara and Alex thanks to the multiple sets of memories! 

(So all of fandom’s freaking out is for naught. As it almost always is.) 

I bring this up because, again, as much as I talk about setting stuff up for where we find Kara six years from now--this Kara is a little different! She comes across as more confident, something Izabela Vidovic mentioned in an interview, when discussing her approach to playing Kara this time around. 

And now, Alex: Admittedly, she gets less focus as like, a solo-entity in these episodes--she really is there to serve the more Kara-centric plot. Personally, it didn’t bother me too much because outside of these flashback episodes, Alex has had some solid development and screen time, so. It balances out.

And the scenes we did get with those 2? Solid. Top tier. There was even a couch scene! Like, technically. Because there was a couch in the supply room. XD  

Spotlight on Kenny: fandom kinda loves to insist that all the men on Supergirl are trash, because, ya know. 'Feminism’ or whatever. It’s ships, it’s always ships. But, in fact! The dudes on Supergirl? Are actually wonderful! And Kenny is another example of a guy who isn’t afraid to be emotionally vulnerable, who 1000% supports Kara, but is also like. His own person. 

GOOD JOB, SHOW. GOOD JOB.

Brainy too, had some really nice stuff in terms of dealing with his emotions!

And it’s Brainy who gives us our closing line, as Nia asks him how he’s feeling now that they’ve accomplished their mission:

“Hopeful.”

NOICE.

In conclusion! “Prom Night” and “Prom Again!” were EXCELLENT! They had heart! They had stakes! They had the promised time-travel do-over alluded to in the titles! Outstanding performances from the entire cast! Tthe ‘young’ versions of characters in particular! And I WILL be watching these episodes on repeat throughout the three-month hiatus! XD

But before the Super Friends take their break: NEXT WEEK! The Quest for Kara Concludes!!!

14. which demon is most frightening to them?

You know at this point it’s like... he’s faced so many demons, and fought so many, and killed so many I’m not sure he’s even /scared/ of any of them anymore. Like he gets annoyed as shit about despair demons because they fly off in circles and he has to chase them, and he’s faced the nightmare twice and technically “won” both times, so can we really say he’s /frightened/ anymore?

But on the most important note... he’s never actually seen a desire demon, now has he? Because if he ever thought about that for more than 30 seconds I think he’d be pretty goshdarn terrified.

Remember in S7, when Rumple told Wish Hook (I’m paraphrasing here bc I don’t remember the exact words) that he was basically the closest thing he had to a friend? I think that’s cool. I think it’s important, and lemme tell you why.

That curse, as far as I can tell, wasn’t on for too long. It wasn’t like the twenty-eight years the people in Storybrooke had to make their new friendships. And Weaver and Rogers were only partners for a few weeks to a few months of that time anyway. But that time was clearly important to Rumple, because A) Weaver seemed to like Rogers, even though he kept getting in the way, and B) he continued to like Rogers as Rumple. It’s a little harder to tell how Rogers felt during that time, because he often acts annoyed when he doesn’t understand what Weaver is doing, but in the end I think he wants to respect and even like Weaver, even if it’s hard to do so sometimes. Because Rogers never totally turns Weaver away; he doesn’t quit as Weaver’s partner, and he does go to Weaver for help every now and then.

I’m also gonna go out on a bit of a limb and say it appeared the Rumple enjoyed his time as Weaver, after he woke up. Once he knew who he really was, and what he was really supposed to be doing in Hyperion Heights, he legitimately went out of his way to be gentle with Rogers. He tried to include Rogers more in what he was doing, but he also couched his truths in terms that would be easier for Rogers to understand. If he just wanted to keep Rogers around as a pawn or an asset, he might’ve told him half-truths, but he wouldn’t have made them so easy to swallow or easy on Rogers’ mind. There’s a difference between Rumple when he’s telling half-truths to manipulate someone, and when he’s telling half-truths (specifically to Rogers) because the full truth would simply be too weird. Was he already a better man at that time? Yes, yes he was. But he had to make the choice to be kind to Rogers in particular, because he was still rough around the edges, and it was a choice he did make. Repeatedly.

Also, I’m willing to bet Hook and Rumple were friendly before the curse. First off, Hook’s reaction when the curse was broken was not Rogers’ feelings about Weaver, it was Hook’s feelings about Rumple. He seemed not only to tolerate his existence, but also kind of pleased to see him again. That’s not what I would expect if their only interactions before the curse were when Rumple found Alice to be the Guardian. (Although, honorable mention: Hook’s attitude went from “goshdarn crocodile” to “dude’s alright” pretty fast, when he realized that Rumple was protecting Alice from the magic of the Dark One.)

Anyway, after the *honorable mention* moment, there is clearly some time before the curse happens. Not quite sure how much, bc time in S7 is insanely fluid and hard to read, but I would go with couple months to several years. And since Rumple seems to have been hanging around Alice for most of that time (the way I read it was that Alice decided to low-key keep an eye on him when he lost his sanity, because she wished she could’ve done more to help him as the Guardian?) and if he was near Alice, but not always by her side, then I think it’s probably he ran into Hook a few more times. I’m going to stake myself on them meeting pretty regularly, and connecting on a deeper level now that they’re no longer enemies. It probably started as Hook asking after Alice, but over time he realized that he enjoyed having conversations with Rumple just because.

Regardless of whether they knew each other for several years total or less than a year total, it’s clear from how Hook responds to waking from the curse that he views Rumple as more than a simple acquaintance, and I think it’s also pretty safe to say it’s not just because Rogers and Weaver were friends. I also think their friendship after Rumple wakes up is pretty telling, because Rumple treats him differently than he’s treated basically anyone in the history of the show. There must be some deeper sense of fondness and loyalty there, although their relationship before that, which is fractured, but has an underlying draw for them both to return to each other, even if it’s by coincidence, is also pretty beautiful.

Is this analysis rooted in the fact that S7, and Weaver and Rogers specifically, not just Rumple and Hook, had an undeniable chemistry that led me to ship CaptainCroc in multiple different scenarios? I’d be lying if I said no. (One of my favorite ideas is Rumple realizing that he could have a new love, surviving the finale, and him and Wish Hook getting together.) But I also think that, as friends, their story is compelling and rather lovely, and the fact that it’s a completely different Hook, one who Rumple hasn’t had centuries of history with, makes it even more beautiful.

Weekly Update 29/08

Note: shaking up the format this week, mostly because I just can't stop talking. These updates are gonna become purely about draft progress -- I'm going to include the titles of the books I've read/am reading at the end, but will post my thoughts separately as something of a 'review' (which will likely just be a collation of my stream-of-consciousness thoughts. Or just those thoughts unedited, depending how I feel). I'm also going to post the excerpt in a dedicated post of its own, so keep an eye out for that! ;)

re: the above point -- I think this is a much more productive way of tracking my progress. As I've mentioned, I'm an egregious overwriter, so wordcount goals really don't motivate me too much (I could get 1000 words down and only be like a quarter of the way into the scene dear god help editing this is gonna be hellacious). So I think by scheduling time instead, it's going to force me to be a lot more productive and hopefully get me well on my way to my goal deadline!

re: deadline -- need to do a proper recalculation of where I actually am, because I think I'm a little bit behind. Something to do for next week, however!

I've also started pretty hardcore scheduling this week. It's kinda a mess due to my ridiculously inconsistent work schedule (and the way they often ask me like three hours beforehand if I want to take a shift), but it's great to have time blocked out for certain things. Definitely gonna continue it until this draft is finished, and then reassess whether I like it or whether I'd prefer something more flexible/any other adjustments

briefly considered/considering swapping to google docs for convenience's sake, but I am a) Wary of The Cloud and b) I am not using a writing app where I have to hit two buttons to get italics. I use far too many goshdarned italics to goshdarned do that fucking bullshit. The fact that text colour is still easily accessible but italics is not also makes me unreasonably angry

so instead I'm trying evernote. ^_^ Seems okay so far...?

work is legit fucking killing me, man. The work itself is not too hard, but being essentially on-call (because I still don't have a roster so need to take the shifts in case I don't get others) makes scheduling so damn hard. I was literally halfway through a scene the other day when I had to stop and do Life Things before my unplanned shift. I'm thankful I have a job I can go to during lockdown, but dear lord I cannot wait until I know how many shifts I have and can a) plan around that and b) say fucking no if I want to

seriously considering dropping one of my suspect subplots. I keep forgetting about it, and the plan was always to dead-end it at the midpoint anyway. Plus I think including that one I have... seven? serious suspects, so could probably go with some simplifying. 😅 At the moment I'm thinking I'll leave it out, and if I think the next section needs the extra tension or anything I'll write as though it's there and add it in later if needed

honestly the difference between writing a scene I've had planned/been looking forward to and one which is only a vague notion/I've added because it's 'required' is stark. I just absolutely blow through the former, and sometimes it's like pulling teeth with the latter. But I am getting them done! They just take a right chunk of time sometimes. -.-

related to this, I really need to get my ass in gear with some scene-by-scene planning of Act II. Goal it to at least get some ideas for scenes jotted down for the first half this week!

think I do actually dislike writing at night. I've been forced to by work a couple times this week, and the problem is I stay up too late, and even then sometimes don't complete the scenes (which is generally my aim). But also, it puts my brain in Writing Mode, which not only makes it harder to sleep, but also generally results in my crafting beautiful sentences and even whole scenes whilst I'm trying to sleep that I promptly forget upon waking the next morning. Ugh

this week I also managed to stumble over some books that seem to fit the same genre as ATN. Not 100% on what that genre actually is (still) but there does seem to be a (niche?) area of paranormal/fantasy/crime/mystery-that-is-not-set-in-a-contemporary world (ie not exactly urban-fantasy/mystery). Definitely have added all the ones I've found so far to the reading list!

clearly I have hit the middle of this draft, because I've been hit hard by a Shiny New Idea. Amalgamating all the advice I've read on the subject, I've jotted down all my thoughts and put it to the side until I finish this damned draft first

ultimately, still having fun, still loving this world and all the characters, still loving attempting to work to a deadline. Everything is shiny and happy this week. ^_^ Let's hope it stays that way ahaha... ha.

Patch is also a sheriff but every time she gets close to catching a criminal Diego shows up and pins them to a wall with a knife first (helpful? Maybe. Annoying? Yes.) Half the time she ends up arresting diego too

Leonard is some guy who thinks he's some big bad gunslinger but really he has a cap gun and he gets arrested every other week for harassing Vanya in Five's Saloon

Delores is no longer a mannequin but she doesnt speak and has suspiciously modern clothing (all of which is glittery for some reason)

Dave is new in town and Klaus is obsessed with trying to get him to have his fortune read but Dave is too much of a skeptic and politely refuses every time. Will drink sarsaparilla instead of alcohol

Cha-cha is a masked bandit but she does stuff like robbing banks and tying people to railroad tracks

Hazel is also a masked bandit but he is happily married to the lady who owns the bed and breakfast (agnus) and makes homemade donuts and the bandit thing is a double life that makes him feel guilty.

Reginald hargreeves is the corrupt mayor with a monkey butler (pogo) that is never questioned. He now wears a ten gallon hat with his monocle.

Grace is also there but she just rushes around chastising people who try to have showdowns like "I'll make you some cookies and we'll settle our differences with words!"

sorry, nonny, i sat on your ask for a while because i wanted to like think about my response so i didn’t come off one way or another in it, because i wasn’t sure of the tone it’s being asked in.

you know it’s funny, in the… three years? i’ve been saying Holden is bi, no one ever confronted me about my—as you put it, Rowling’d—vaguely confirmed headcanon, for one reason or another. the kind of two throwaway lines in two books (holden spent an entire scene referring to a male news anchor as “pretty”, repeatedly, in addition to considering sleeping with a male waiter for a hot second) were things I ran with. had fun with, since that’s what fandoms do. people mostly ignored it, probably because it didn’t jive with what they already decided.

i don’t think i ever called holden good bi rep. because yeah, in all honesty, he isn’t. canonically, he is not good rep. could he be, if shown? sure. i don’t think the talent would be too against doing something like that. do i think the books will ever fully confirm it? no, not with one book left. I did however find it interesting that TPTB said the same for Amos, and that was taken as Word of God, while Holden was thrown in the “still awful AND straight” bucket, alone. because that makes total sense for the whole cast to be HC’d as not straight except Holden.

I absolutely do think we deserve better, but i don’t think my fun and fancy free attempts to enjoy myself in fandom with fic or shitposts or “holden’s got that bi energy” should automatically prove i DON’T think that. i think it’s a tiny bit disingenuous to assume i’m 100% on a HOLDEN IS GOOD BI REP train just cause i make a few jokes, or remind the fandom at large that Holden has JUSt as much confirmation as Amos does, when it comes down to the wire. Ty said it, just like Ty said what he said about Amos. So why not? (ty also said something that made me a little… idk, put off, about monogamy, as if Holden being bi would lead to him cheating on Naomi or bringing a third person into their relationship which is… a WHOLE other conversation but you know) my feelings are complicated, and i choose to present the fun of it, and that it’s out there, rather than the complicated part of whether it’s actual rep or not (it’s not).

And then there’s Drummer, who hard core is set up like she’s in love with Naomi, and we don’t know if her attraction to women will ever be confirmed or shown or anything. They keep saying it was love, but we don’t know if it will get brushed under the rug with Naomi back on the Roci. These are all conversations i’ve had with my friends, all ships and HCs i heavily support, and would love to see confirmed. but i haven’t taken the time to sit down and write seriously about it.

now, i fully know that how i fan is not how everyone fans, that I find comfort and fun in making fanworks and HCs and joking about that disaster bi energy Holden totally has, even if it’s never fully shown in canon. people want more. my friends want more. and they should, they do deserve it. but i also like… can’t i just have a little bit of fun on this goshdarn hell site without being spoken to like i don’t care about actual representation when there are many people doing the same thing without being questioned on it as well? shouldn’t there be some consideration that maybe i just don’t open every fun post with an explanation of my deeper, more conflicting feelings about it? maybe if the idea of bi holden had had as much discussion out there as other characters, i’d have more serious conversations. but for a while it was just me, shouting into the void. so i made it fun.

i hope i’m not coming off as like fire and brimstone, super annoyed, or whatever. i’m really not, i get it. it’s a wholly complicated issue. i just you know in three years, virtually no one wanted to have an actual conversation about this at all. it was all amos and drummer and alex and naomi and literally everyone else while holden was the trash straight. so it stung a little feeling like i’m being put to the question for having fun with a character who means a lot to me that i love rather than seeking and calling for good representation, when i can do both.

How do you feel about yesterday? It was fun but also goshdarn sad. We watched a 2nd-round volleyball game between UP (my school) and Ateneo and WE LOST TO THEM. AGAIN. Three straight sets. My team doesn’t seem to win whenever I watch live so I’m almost convinced to not watch a game anymore. It’s always good fun watching though. About today? It’s a bit more laidback than yesterday but I still fairly enjoyed it. We went out for lunch and my meal was really good, and I had a great nap for the rest of the afternoon so I liked today too. "!! trick or treating!" Patty reached out to shake Logan around as her smile brightened "Great way to start the night!! I'm choosing trick since all of the snacks at this goshdarn bar are way too prizey! Do I look like a money tree or something!?"

Logan was just letting himself be shaken around for as long as she wanted to. He thought she was very adorable when she was like that. Even though she was nearly making him fall off his chair since the only free chairs they'd been able to find at the halloween party where two of those annoyingly tall bar stools.

"No honey, you look like a ghost. A very pretty ghost" He looked at you "-A uhm fake pretty ghost. I hmm I choose treat so that my good lady wife gets even more snacks! Tactics!"

"YEaH!! Tactics!!" She pressed a kiss to his hand "Don't worry dear, I'll let you have Some snacks"

He was working hard on braiding Rowan's hair while they got bumped around in a taxi.

"Well since I am spending halloween with my monstrosity of a brother you might understand that I am already very Very tired of tricks. So I choose treat" Rowan replied.

"You should be glad I'm not putting boogers and frog livers in your hair right now" The monstrosity of a brother said with a grin.

She smacked her arms around to try and hit him, in the sister way "You're a nightmare!!!"

"Yeah! An epic one!!"

Remy was sitting in the passenger seat of Virgil's car with their feet leant against the dashboard. The whole car was slowly but surely filling up with smoke because of them.

"Eyy the ghost. My bestieeee" They let up into a relaxed smile as they saw you "Gal I think I gotta choose some tr-"

The car suddenly swerved to the right, just enough so it didn't go off the road. Remy nearly slammed their head into the car window.

"Fucking hell Virge!" They groaned.

"I didn't expect a fucking ghost to get into the car!! I thought it only was in the apartment! I am not talking to one of those while driving!"

"I didn't think you were afraid of ghosts. Don't you like love ghosts and all that shit"

"I'm not- Afraid isn't the word for it! I don't trust them! They don't trust me! We're not on usual speaking terms unlike how you're suddenly so buddy buddy with them!" He rolled his eyes "...not that you can't be...uhm..friends with them.....i guess....it just...surprised me.....sorry"

He'd gotten just a bit scared that the ghosts were back to berate him about being a supposedly bad person. He'd thought he had been doing a pretty good on job on being a better partner lately. He'd done his best.

"It's okay babe. My lil Vivsy. So terrified of the like scary ghosties. Poor Viv" Remy pouted and everything just to be annoying.

"I'm not lil!"

"Yeah Yeah. Sure" They glanced to you "No trick or treat for us. Sorry"

Janus was in anxious mega disaster hell. He had been walking back and forth across the pavement right outside of the halloween party. When he saw you he nearly jumped.

"Normally I would have said trick to see what the hell you would have come up with but" A nervous laugh left their lips "Right now I think if another even slightly bad thing happens right now it will actually break me and make me transform into a hideous beast that eats buildings"

They fiddled with their black gloves and checked themself in the reflection of the bar's window again.

"So treat please. If that wasn't clear" He snapped his fingers to try and stim some anxiety away "Oh this is just- this is absolutely ridiculous of me- It's a door! I have walked through a lot of doors in my life time. Why am I unable to go into a party. Oh gosh what if Logan isn't there yet. What if I'm way too early and everyone thinks I'm pathetic and ugly and everyone will hate me and I will probably break the light equipment by accident somehow"

They grimaced as they stared at the door. They could hear the bass from the music through the walls.

"I have decided that doors are extremely frightening actually and all doors should be torn apart"
