I'm going to need a bit of help this month...

Let me start by saying that I'm very glad that it's been more than a month since I've needed to ask for help. This was due in a large part to some assistance I received from a dear family member, and a moderate reduction in my monthly expenses. However, things have now gotten a bit worse.

For at least the next few weeks, my employer is cutting hours--even though we're already critically understaffed in all areas of the store. Corporate is tightening its belt so to maximize their own bonuses (the disconnect between the six & seven figure execs and the galley slaves rowing the boat has never been more pronounced) as the poor economy is affecting business. Frankly, this is the slowest I've ever seen things in my entire retail career.

As a result, I'm going to be coming up short to pay for my lodging for the rest of June (at least). I'm fine through this Saturday, the 16th, but need to come up with at least half of the weekly payment for the next few weeks. Hopefully, my hours will be restored by the beginning of July. I want to try to raise $600 overall, so about $200/week.

Fortunately, a couple of very dear Mutuals sent me some funds in celebration of my birthday yesterday (tysm my lovely friends!🥰🥰), so I've already made a good start...

Your post about Chappell and Hozier made me think and I realised that I don’t even want to be a part of any kind of fandom anymore.

I’ve been on the internet since I was like 10 years old and I’ve been in so many fandoms and eventually, things always turn toxic and weird.

And it sucks because my real life isn’t the greatest and I’ve never felt like I really belong anywhere? So I get invested in fandoms, trying to fit in somewhere and belong somewhere. And I’m 28 now so tbh, it’s probably a bit embarrassing. But when you’re alone in life I guess you try to find companionship where you can lol and the easiest way is with common interests so fandoms make it easy.

But I’m so tired of the toxic-ness and hatred and everything that always comes with fandoms now. The cliques and “I’m better than you because of this” “I’ve known this thing longer than you” and just all of it. It’s not fun anymore because it always gets ruined eventually. I think social media can be so amazing and I’m always trying to curate my experience in a positive way. But fandoms aren’t positive anymore. People always feel entitled and superior they’re so obsessive and possessive and there seems to always be a loud majority that ruins it for everyone.

Idk what I’m trying to say and idk why I’m sending you this message but you’ve always been really nice with anon messages. I just felt the need to share because this just hit me today and now I feel a little lost and alone but I think not getting invested in these kind of things anymore is probably much more healthier..

I absolutely get where you're coming from. I myself have been in fandoms since I was around 10 years old as well and as you said, somehow it always turns toxic - or weird.

And it's so stupid too, like why can't we just maintain friendliness and normalcy in this community that's revolving around mutual interest for actor/musician/whatever? We're all here because of that, why turn against each other and act foolish? We are literally all the same.

It is definitely healthier to not engage with content that upsets you and just keep enjoying the music/movies without digging for drama. It's so pointless and it doesn't bring anything good with it. Besides, fandoms should be enjoyable for everyone, no matter the age or fuck else.

Kitty update: we are nearly at a fully successful integration! Angel and the kittens only need a few hours of separation a day (usually when I get home from work) and we're all in the same bed at night.

Angel is doing so good, truly. She has to set boundaries with Aries a lot cause this tuxedo baby doesn't know the definition of personal space. But Aries is getting there. Maybe 😂 In the meantime, Aries is still dying to snuggle with poor Angel all the time.

Meanwhile Angel and Mr Starla seem to have reached a mutual "don't bother me, I won't bother you" agreement. I think there's room for that to expand to maybe cuddles eventually, but we'll see. He is SO big though (9lb!!! He's just now 6 months. Halp.) and his tail is really floofing out. The boy is still a master biscuit maker, but he's now a neutered biscuit maker.

These last 5 months have been rough but I gotta tell you, it's all been worth it to have the kittens snuggle with me at night and I get the sleep I need at the same time. It's such a relief. And it's also been so helpful for mental health. Oh my goodness. Having another kitty snuggling with me has been amazing. I'm really glad I decided to get a kitten, and a second. I really lucked out with these two as they really are just the sweetest beans - yes, even Aries. She's a trouble maker but she does it out of love lol.

Anyway, if you're trying to integrate your cats (especially if you have a really old one), don't give up!! Sometimes it really does take 5-6 months to see big progress. Count your wins, even if they're small. Keep a progress log. Move as slow as possible and don't forget to give treats 🥰

actually, to talk more about tlw, i need to talk more about its similarity to simon says. at their cores, they are both interrogating what creators owe to fans, and they are both horror stories about what your fans might do to you if you disappoint them. if your work doesn’t please them, if you hurt their feelings online – what will the fans do? will they weave an elaborate web of lies around you, ruin your life, and trick/coerce you into sex? in these episodes they will!

nobody talks about how chas's punishment is in kind. i don't mean the nine years. i mean the specific nature of the punishment, the tables turned against him. "loving someone who hated you." he failed to honour the parasocial contract with his fans, and so he is subjected to the ultimate parasocial rejection. manipulated into caring deeply for someone, believing in a real mutual emotional connection, only to discover it was just a facade. that the person he loved never even said i love you back.

it's a dark revenge fantasy for the fan who's had (for example...) their tv comedian crush be a little mean to them on twitter. a nightmare for the tv comedian in question. i think, consciously or unconsciously, it's a very personal story for them and especially for reece, who is on the receiving end of a lot more obsessive fan behaviour and understandably has a much stronger reaction to it.

i mean, who's really being queerbaited in tlw? not the viewers, not in the traditional sense. chas is being irl queerbaited to death. some people say the deception was too obvious – that he shouldn't have accepted only seeing his partner on weekends, for example. but the humiliation of being easily deceived, of accepting scraps, is important to the punishment. like 🤡 when you let a showrunner transparently string you along.

a little over seven years ago, i sent some fanmail to one of my favourite creators, and we started dating. we are still happily together now, and i am still a fan. but the transition was hard. we self-aware parasociality enjoyers like to think we have things in perspective – that we know we're just projecting and we actually have no idea about the real, flawed human being who exists in private. but knowing that intellectually and being confronted with the reality of it are two very different things. creators and their fans, regardless of positive intentions or demographic similarity or anything else, inherently approach each other with different mindsets which inevitably create discomfort for one or both parties. it's a really interesting and fertile kind of dynamic and i think tlw and simon says are both fascinating explorations in that space.

i think simon says is reasonably authentic and respectful to the fan perspective (never forget they did enough research to drop their own ship name in the podcast about it 🫠) but i see it as a major oversight that simon's reaction to the mention of fanfiction is to say dismissively, "no, it's more sophisticated than that." my partner – who seven years ago would have been confused by or dismissive of this sort of fan culture, but who has learned a lot by living with me – turned to me and said, "a real fan wouldn't say that."

I'm so, so glad I found someone who shares my overfixation about "practical" worldbuilding 😍 and I'd love to hear your ideas. I don't mind at all! Sorry about the private messaging thing--I have it set up so only mutuals/people I follow can do so, and this was actually my first time coming across your blog.

I don't mind posting publicly because I love sharing these ideas. I mostly write Elucien one-shots, and they almost always take place in different courts. I love thinking about the types of spaces they might share and places they could be truly happy and at ease. I lean on the idea of Lucien having friends in every court and into the idea of both of them taking on emissary duties (and making the most of them).

My fics aren't the type that technically require research, but I do it anyway. I spent a lot of time mentally "designing" the quarters they share in Helion's palace in Day for The Dance of Day (warning: it's smutty). I did a deep dive into the flora and greenery that would grow well or be native to both what would've been in the northern Persian empire (the modern countries there) and Greece: what could be used for privacy and shade. Types of layouts that would allow for great airflow and that would lean into this idea I had of using goddess imagery with Elain.

I did something similar with my one-shots taking place in Winter (with the greenhouse and courtyard layouts), with their rooms in Summer (I was thinking of a very resort-style waterfront layout), (and I have a private cottage in Spring that's already made one appearance and will again with some deliberately-laid out gardens. I have a whole masterlist that saves some time.

While I don't think SJM needs to spend quite the level of time and detail planning out these things, it's always bothered me how little grounding and worldbuilding she does in her books. We're already how many books in and I still don't understand Night Court fashion at all (which is where we've now spent the longest). A lot of times, it's completely random and inconsistent.

I love that someone else is all about those grounding details and practical worldbuilding! It can do a lot for a story and it's something I take seriously in my own original fiction.
