holly's august extravaganza day 4: a friend in me
📍 anon - I don't know but I feel like Carlos and Nancy can have such an awesome best friend dynamic. Maybe something sad/scary regarding Nancy happens where she has to make a report at the precinct and Carlos doesn't tell anyone as she made him promise so he starts to just check on Nancy and they just develop this caring, supportive, beautiful, fun, full of banter friendship to the amusement of TK and the 126.
kept this separate from your original ask because i want to keep those other prompts you sent alongside this one for later 😊
ao3 | 2k | hurt/comfort, brief references to gun violence, mostly just carlos and nancy being besties
Carlos has never seen Nancy look so small.
She’s sitting hunched over in one of the interrogation rooms, shock blanket around her shoulders, hands seemingly moving of their own volition to tear the empty styrofoam cup in front of her to shreds. As soon as Carlos had seen her being escorted into the precinct, shaking like a leaf and clutching her coat like a lifeline, he’d persuaded the officer with her to let him take over the case. His association with the 126 is well known so the officer had been reluctant, but Carlos had managed to wear him down, saying that he doesn’t really know Nancy that well.
And it’s—it’s not exactly a full lie. Through their hangs and TK’s stories, he’s coming to see Nancy as a force of nature, a woman who will let nothing and no-one stand in her way, whether that’s out on the field or during a game of Monopoly. But of her personal life, Carlos knows next to nothing; she mentioned a sister a few weeks ago, and TK delights in teasing her about her growing crush on Marjan, but that’s about it.
He needs to make more of an effort, he decides. When they’re anywhere else but a police station.
Carlos knocks lightly on the door to announce his presence before entering the room, sending her what he hopes is a reassuring smile. Nancy visibly relaxes at the sight of him and she drops the remains of her cup, though Carlos doesn’t miss the continuing tremble to her hands.
“Hey Nancy,” he says, sliding into the seat opposite her. “How are you doing?”
Nancy’s lips twitch, the corners barely curving into the beginnings of a wry smile. She breathes out shakily, meeting Carlos’s eyes for the briefest second before staring back down at the table. “I’m not great,” she answers, and for her to admit to that… Well, Carlos suspects it’s not a regular occurrence.
He nods, reluctantly pulling out his notebook and pen, hesitating before flipping to the next blank page. Nancy tracks his movements, resignation clearly etched all over her features. Carlos glances at the two-way mirror—not that it does him any good—then reaches across the table to take Nancy’s hand.
“We don’t have to do this right now,” he murmurs. “If you need more time, just say the word and I’ll leave. Or if you’d prefer to talk to someone you don’t know, we can do that too. Anything you need.”
The sudden tightness of Nancy’s grip is unexpected, as is the flash of panic in her eyes.
“Please, don’t go,” she whispers. “I don’t—” She cuts herself off, shutting her eyes and breathing slowly for a few seconds. Slowly, her hold on Carlos begins to loosen until her hand is slack in his, then she draws both hands into her lap and straightens in her chair. When her eyes reopen, she seems more like the Nancy Carlos knows—strong, confident, assertive—though there’s still clearly an undercurrent of fear underneath it all.
“I’m fine. Let’s do this.”
Carlos bites back an are you sure and settles for clicking his pen, his smile unwavering. “Can you run me through what happened, exactly?” he asks. “Take your time.”
A second or two passes, then Nancy nods, her voice steady when she speaks. “I was restocking the bus at the end of shift. I was alone; Captain Vega was in her office and TK was with the others in the showers—he did try to help but he’d had to go into a fire on our last call to help a patient and the smell of smoke was giving me a headache, so I told him to go.”
Carlos pauses in his note-taking, mentally filing that last piece of information away for follow-up as soon as he sees his boyfriend again. Judging by the amused quirk to Nancy’s eyebrow, she’s fully aware of where his mind has gone, so Carlos clears his throat and motions for her to continue, forcing his thoughts back to the present.
“Like I said, I was alone. I didn’t mind it; it was kind of relaxing, you know? Then this guy appeared from nowhere and pointed a gun at me, saying if I called out or turned on the siren or anything, he’d shoot. I thought—” She inhales sharply, her knuckles going white on the tabletop and her jaw clenching tightly. Her voice sounds different when she next speaks, more controlled, as though forcing each word out. “I thought it was happening again. I thought he was going to take me somewhere, make me his personal pet paramedic, something like that.
“Turns out, he just wanted drugs. I gave him what we had on the rig and he seemed satisfied, so I figured he’d shoot me anyway ‘cause I’d seen his face, right? He didn’t—obviously—but it looked like he was considering it.” Nancy pauses and flicks her gaze up at Carlos, biting her lip. “I think he might have done it,” she admits quietly, “but he got spooked by one of the guys making noise so he just bolted. I’m not sure how long it was between that and TK coming back and finding me. I’m sorry.”
Carlos shakes his head. “It’s okay. We can check the cameras at the station. With luck, that should get us an ID, maybe a license plate if he drove. I think that’s almost everything; just one more question, if that’s okay. Can you tell me what you gave him exactly?”
Nancy nods. “Morphine, Ativan, tramadol… I’d have to check stocks for the exact amounts.”
“We’ll do that, don’t worry about it.” Carlos taps his pen on the pages before flipping his notebook shut and leaning across the table again. “Are you okay?” he asks softly. “Speaking as a friend and not a cop, if there’s anything you need, anything I can help with, let me know.”
She smiles wanly. “I’m okay. I just want to go home and forget all this ever happened.”
“Fair enough. I’ll walk you out to your car.”
Carlos half-expects her to brush him off, but she just nods and allows him to escort her back through the precinct and out to her car. He dithers awkwardly, shuffling his feet as Nancy turns to him, one hand on the door handle.
“Thank you, Carlos. For real. I have the feeling it wasn't a coincidence that you were the one in that room with me.”
The tips of Carlos’s ears go pink as he finds himself caught out. “That, uh… That would not be inaccurate.”
“Well, thanks.” She pulls open the car door and Carlos takes a step back, wanting to wait until she’s safely away to go back inside. Nancy ducks as if to get in, then pauses and straightens again, biting her lip as she looks back at him.
“Hey, Carlos?” she says. “Can you do me a favour and not tell the others? Not even TK. They— They know vaguely what happened, but I’d prefer it if the details and, uh, some of the other stuff I told you could be kept between us.”
He agrees immediately, just grateful that she trusts him enough to handle this for her. “No-one will know any more than they need to,” he promises, which seems to relieve her. She thanks him again, then gets in the car and drives away, Carlos watching after her with one hand raised in farewell.
*
It grows from there.
It’s not intentional exactly, but one text to check up on her soon turns into a steady stream of messages, stories and jokes and even the occasional meme passing back and forth between them. Carlos especially appreciated Nancy's carefully curated collection of dirt on TK, which, as a concerned boyfriend, it is his duty to know. Many a conversation has been spent griping about TK's accident prone ways or sighing over his latest mishap.
Lovingly, of course.
Nancy, 15.48: you’ll never guess what happened this time
Carlos, 16.22: ?
In answer, he receives a picture of a dejected-looking TK sprawled on the floor with Buttercup’s front paws squarely resting on his chest. Buttercup’s tongue is lolling out, a wide grin on his face, and in the background stand the rest of the crew. All of them also seem to have their phones pointed towards TK—probably the reason TK looks so down, as Carlos knows his boyfriend couldn’t be upset with Buttercup to save his life.
Nancy, 16.26: he thought he’d try to teach buttercup some tricks. turns out, dog trainers exist for a reason
Carlos has to stifle a laugh—technically, he is supposed to be working—but his attempt at being subtle is thwarted when his phone repeatedly pings with similar texts and photos from Paul, Marjan, and Mateo. He screenshots the sudden influx of notifications and sends it to Nancy before saving every single photo.
Nancy responds with a laughing emoji and a promise to keep him updated.
*
Not all of their conversations are about TK, naturally.
Carlos, 19.10: I don’t understand why you don’t just talk to her
Nancy, 19.12: i do talk to her. every shift, actually
Carlos, 19.13: Nancy
Nancy, 19.13: carlos
Nancy, 19.14: i don’t even know if she’s into women, alright? it’s not like i can just march up and ask, that’s like waving a banner saying ‘hey, i’m in love with you’ in her face
Carlos, 19.16: Oh, we’re talking about love now, are we?
Nancy, 19.17: can it, reyes
Carlos, 19.20: Noted. Look, take it from someone who’s been navigating gay relationships in Texas his whole life. Sometimes you just have to go for it. Ask her for coffee, test the waters, see where it leads. You never know, it might work out. I mean, look at me
Nancy, 19.24: wow, way to rub your happiness in my face 😑
(Carlos doesn’t find out if she follows his advice, but he does notice her and Marjan showing up to their hangs together)
(Nancy does not appreciate his smugness)
*
Without even realising, they become a formidable team. This fact is highlighted one game night about three months after the incident, when Nancy and Marjan blow into his and TK’s house, a determined glint in both their eyes.
“We’re switching up the teams,” Marjan declares, much to TK’s outrage.
“What? Why?”
“Because,” Nancy continues, “we’re tired of losing to you guys. You’re like, freakishly good at board games and it’s not fair. Plus, we have to watch you both being all lovey all the time when you’re on the same team and it’s exhausting. We want to see you being competitive for once.”
TK pouts, but Carlos just shrugs when he looks to him for backup. “It’ll be fun,” he says, smiling at Nancy and Marjan. TK still looks put out, so he leans in close and half-murmurs, “C’mon babe. How about a prize for the winner?”
TK perks up considerably at the suggestion, and, going by the twin looks of despair on Nancy and Marjan’s faces, they caught both the comment and the innuendo. Marjan groans and Nancy raises her eyes skyward, as if pleading for divine intervention.
“This was a great idea, actually,” TK says, grinning. He quirks an eyebrow at Nancy. “You and me, Nance?”
That seems to shake Nancy out of her silent prayers for strength. “Uh, no. I’m with Carlos.” To emphasise the point, she strides forward and grabs Carlos’s arm, dragging him to the couch. He nudges her gently when they sit, smirking at the disgruntled way she digs into the snack bowl.
“You did say you wanted to see us being competitive.”
“Shut up.”
*
In the end, TK ends up paired with Mateo, and Marjan with Paul. It’s clear from the outset who’s going to win—Nancy and Carlos dominate the board, and not even Paul’s master strategy is enough to catch up with them.
They win by a comfortable margin, fist-bumping in celebration. There’s a general air of bemusement in the room, and when Carlos looks round at the others, he finds four pairs of eyes fixed on them.
“What?”
“Since when have you two been such a good team?” Paul asks, leaning back in his chair and raising an eyebrow.
Carlos shrugs, sharing a smile with Nancy. “Guess we just are.”

“OH-I’ am so sorry, we can wait outside”
“No need Honey, I’ am just leaving. Bye Babe I’ll see you tonight” the beautiful women lent over and kissed Rafael on the lips for way too long in your opinion.
You looked up at Sonny and rolled your tear filled eyes.
You had transferred over from Narcotics just on 12 months ago. You had loved SVU from the moment you walked in. The work load and the co-workers, you were made for this job. You had gotten along with everyone straight off the bat, but one in particular, Rafael Barba. You guys had this fun little banter going on. The inside jokes, the funny text messages, the sassy comments he would leave on your Instagram uploads or video’s and the random coffee catch up’s after work or over the weekend at your apartment.
It wasn’t until one night in his office late while you guys were working on a case that you looked over at him with his sleeved rolled up, tie lose, first couple of shirt button undone, vest and jacket off showing off his suspenders, tapping his gold pen on the his yellow note pad, licking his top lip as he looked up to smile at you, that you knew you had feelings for him. Of course you would never say anything just yet, you wanted to feel things out first.
You found yourself making more of an effort with your appearance on the days you knew he would be coming into the precinct, you had to go to his office or you had to go to court. Of course Sonny being your partner knowing you all too well, he noticed all this and finally called you out one lunch when you wore lipstick in a light shade of pink to court.
“You like Barba don’t you?”
“What- No don’t be stupid Sonny, he is a good friend”
“Yeah RIGHT, Don’t lie to me” he laughed to you.
You had had a healthy number of relationships. Your longest being 4 years which ended just before you transferred to SVU. You were transferring to SVU and your boyfriend took a bankers job in Texas. The long distance lasted for 3 weeks before you both decided to call it quits. You had your heart broken quite a few times, but nothing like this.
“I’ll wait at the car” you turned out of Rafael’s office and made a run for it before Sonny had a chance to stop you or Rafael knew you were gone.
“Where’s Y/N?” Rafael asked Sonny after the women walked out of his office.
“Ah, she got a phone call”
“I didn’t hear her phone ring”
“Anyway Barba the warrant” Sonny held his hand out to him.
You were leaning on the car with your sunglasses on hiding the tears you couldn’t hold in anymore.
“You ok?” Sonny squeezed your shoulder
“Yeah all good, let’s go”
Rafael hadn’t been seeing Melanie for all that long. She was a paralegal that he spotted one day walking through the halls, she gave him a small smile and it went from there. It was the honeymoon stage for now, she always wanted to spend time with him. Always wanted to go out for dinner and the movies. He was enjoying himself. But he often caught himself thinking of you, even while he was with her. More than once while Melanie had him fully in her mouth, he pictured it was you just before he would come.
It was like you had been made for him. He loved the little banter you guys had, but you never showed signs that it was any more than just friendship and he didn’t want to over step the mark and stuff up what you guys had. So when he seen Melanie, there was nothing holding him back so he made a move which ended up working in his favour, for now. Surely she understood his job, she was a paralegal working in the DA’S office.
After that day in his office you tried to keep your distance from him. You threw yourself into work and when you weren’t working you were exercising. You were running with Amanda every morning and going to the gym after work, sometimes till late at night. Which Sonny did not approve of you leaving late at night from the gym by yourself. You avoided going to Rafael’s office, Sonny would let you sit in the car while he ran in and if you knew he was coming you would disappear as soon as you seen him round the corner into the bullpen. Rafael would still message you and comment on your Instagram but you would ignore it every time.  You managed to keep this up for 4 weeks till a big case came in, it was all hands on deck and he was no longer somewhat avoidable.
You walked into the bullpen that morning covered in sweat. Amanda couldn’t run that morning, so you decided to go to the gym for a couple of hours before work, you knew with this case it would probably be the last time you would have time to work out till the case was over. You started in an hour so you were going to shower and change in the on call room. You walked in looking less then put together. Your black exercise pants wet with sweat as was your purple tank top and sports bra. Your hair swept at the front, back with more sweat and a reddened face. You walked into the bullpen going through your bag looking for your locker key, not paying attention.
“You’re here early” you froze, you knew that voice and you looked up to a smiling Rafael. “I haven’t seen you in a while, how are you?”
“Sorry I can’t talk now I have get ready for work” you rushed off to the on call room.
----
“I’ am sorry Rafael, I can’t do it anymore. I need more than you can give me. I can’t be with someone whose job is more important than me.”
He stood there and watched as Melanie walked out of his apartment, not even chasing after her. And puff his fun was over. Melanie was just like everyone else, couldn’t handle his work life. But he wasn’t going to give that up just for a relationship. Rafael sat on his couch resting a drink, his mind running a thousand miles an hour when you crossed it and something clicked. “You idiot” he said under his breath.
He thought back to the last time he remembered seeing you, that day in his office when you and Sonny walked in and seen him and Melanie kissing, her grabbing hold of his suspenders pulling him into her. He hadn’t heard or seen you since and now he knew why. Clearly Sonny was in on it too, it was always the same excuse when he walked into his office alone, “She is on the phone” and the way you reacted to him this morning when you walked into the bullpen was enough proof.
It had been 4 weeks and you looked so different, he could see you had gotten fitter, leaner and he could see new muscles you had started to form. How didn’t he see it? He used the excuse that you hadn’t shown signs that you liked him when you had, more than once. He hoped he wasn’t too late. He couldn’t do anything tonight, court started at 9 am tomorrow and he had some last minute prep to do. He hoped you would be there so he could try and talk to you after.

In the Golden Dark, pt. 3
Part 1, Part 2
a/n: I believe this is called a slow burn. Sorry to keep you waiting, it wasn’t intentional. I just keep getting pulled in to all the details and the thing grows. It’ll wrap up in the part after this one. Enjoy :) ~2.5k
i thought i’d ride all the same roads and skies for mercy’s sake, would you look at your life
No matter how drawn out, how difficult a case was, there was a routine to their return flights. Everyone boarded and retreated to their favorite place. Especially if the case ended poorly, people needed time to themselves to decompress. The jet wasn’t all that large but it had enough seats for them to spread out if they needed to. Creatures of habit, they often ended up picking the same spots each time, drawing peace from the standard arrangement. This trip however Morgan managed to sprain his ankle while chasing the unsub and Reid graciously gave him the couch where he would normally curl up so Morgan could elevate and ice his ankle. As an alternative he picked a seat next to the window and jumped when Hotch appeared next to him. They exchanged a quick look, Hotch silently checking that it was okay for him to take the neighboring seat. It was a new behavior, he never would have given sitting next to Spencer a second thought before. But now, there were too many exposed edges, too much risk of rogue electric currents to simply slip down beside each other like they might have in the past.
Spencer looked at him, eyes glazed with exhaustion. Confused, he didn’t recognize that Hotch’s hesitation was due to a question of his comfort. When it clicked he nodded quickly, waving his hand in manner that was meant to be an invitation but was a little too abrupt not to appear frantic. He hated how clearly his nerves showed sometimes and made an effort not to fidget as Hotch settled beside him. He tried to study Hotch’s face from the corner of his eye, jealous of the way he was always able to remain so impassive. He knew this wasn’t just a lack of feeling but rather a controlled effort, something that he put on each day same as his suits and gun holsters. Right now he was wishing he could read the other man’s thoughts. Hotch noticed him watching and quirked up the corner of his mouth in a small smile. Perplexed, Spencer sat back into the seat, wanting to pull his long legs up to his chest but there simply wasn’t the room for it. Instead he hugged his arms around his torso, letting the soft pressure try to calm his racing heart. He’d been on edge since that afternoon. Since he’d slipped.
*
The first time he had used the name Aaron it had felt strange, like a stone rolling around in his mouth. It had started not long after their late night calls had become a regular thing. He could tell it was something consequential but he couldn’t completely comprehend the dimensions of it. He was shy to call the other man by his first name. But Aaron had encouraged it, finding he enjoyed hearing this different shading of his name.
Too often in his life he’d heard that name inflected with anger, with disgust. He’d learned to hate it, to pull his shields in tighter whenever someone used it. Haley had made a difference, infusing his name with the love he had deserved and been denied. Over many years of careful diligence she had managed to loosen the strangled way his mind had tied his name to his failures, his ever present self-loathing. Now with her gone he’d had no problem rejoining the two. He’d never blame her but their parting words, the anger she’d been too fed up to hide had poured into her voice, into that which she’d worked so hard to rehabilitate. The last time he’d heard her say his name he knew he’d lost her and that it had been his own fault.
Since then he’d been only Hotch. He liked it that way. Hotch was strong and capable and didn’t let people down. Occasionally Dave would call him Aaron and he would press his mouth together and accept whatever advice he was about to receive. He didn’t particularly enjoy it but it was a good indicator of Dave’s state of mind so he let that be the relevant information and ignored the feelings it caused to swirl around, a vortex threatening to pull him under.
But when Spencer said it, at first with hesitation but increasingly more confidence, he felt an entirely new emotion. The syllables ran along the same nerve endings that lit up his spine and constricted his lungs whenever he looked at Spencer. It was a feeling that only grew as they became closer, as more of the barriers between them dissolved. When Spencer called him Aaron it sounded like hope.
Which was all well and good at midnight, on the phone or in the too bright lights of an empty diner. In that liminal world it was only natural for them to use softer words for one another. But they had continued to confine those developments to the spaces outside the office, outside the team. Neither would consider it a secret but it remained unspoken, perhaps because they were both too afraid of breaking the spell. They were careful to keep things as they had always been when they were in front of the others. Spencer remained Reid and Aaron was never anyone but Hotch.
Until earlier that afternoon, worn down by the action of the field, the adrenaline of the take down fading away, Reid had made a mistake. It had been small, likely no one had noticed, no one had even been paying attention when, needing the other man’s opinion on which file some forms belonged to, he had called to him.
“Hey, Aaron.”
He hadn’t realized what he’d done until he saw the line of Hotch’s shoulders become rigid beneath his suit jacket. Hotch stiffly turned away from Rossi and Morgan—they’d been reviewing the plan for getting everyone packed up and on the jet headed home as soon as possible. Without a word Hotch raised an eyebrow at Reid, who, mortified, had entirely forgotten what his question had been.
“Reid?” he prompted.
Spencer blinked quickly, looking at the papers in his hands. “Nevermind,” he muttered. When he glanced up again Hotch was still looking at him, his expression unreadable. It made Spencer nervous. Hotch turned and rejoined the conversation with the other two, settling an argument about who would drive who where before it became too heated. Spencer stayed quiet the rest of the time they were at the precinct. Stuck in his mind, he repeated the moment over and over, telling himself this was probably it. This was the moment where he broke things, the moment he showed he wasn’t able to handle himself the way he should. He became convinced that Hotch was mad at him, that he had somehow betrayed his confidence. He became convinced he would never be forgiven.
By the time he sat himself next to the window on the jet, staring out into the inky darkness, he was resigned to having lost. He expected, if he was brave enough to try, that the door they had opened between them would now be locked, that any calls would go unanswered. All because he had been a little careless, had inadvertently shared something they had wordlessly agreed was private. So he was startled when Hotch moved to sit next to him. With that small smile the man had all but short circuited the wires in Spencer’s brain. He didn’t know what to make of it, though history told him not to hope for too much. Everyone reached their limit with him, it was only a matter of time.
They were quiet through take off, as people settled into whatever distraction they could. Then, so quietly it barely crossed the threshold of his awareness, Hotch heard Spencer say something. “Hmm?”
“I’m sorry,” he said again, only a little louder, afraid that even this would be unwelcome.
He leaned back and studied Spencer’s defeated expression, the way he was avoiding eye contact. He should have noticed before, should have known how an instant could get replayed by that perfect memory, morphing into something far more than it needed to be. Hoping he wasn’t too late to counteract the powerful force of self-doubt, he said, “It’s okay, Spencer.”
Spencer might have needed more reassurance; after all, he’d spent the last few hours telling himself that he’d irreparably fucked things up. But the way his name sounded coming out of Aaron’s mouth was all the assurance he needed. He sighed, relief tingling warmly through his fingertips. The tension that had kept his breaths shallow, his mind locked in a tight spiral, finally drained away and the disparaging thoughts became the words he’d been given, repeating gently like the waves on a lake shore. It’s ok, Spencer, it’s ok.
The air between them now calm, Hotch returned to his work. Spencer tried to make himself comfortable, shifting until he’d wedged himself satisfyingly into the corner of the seat and the wall. He craved the security of having the solid world pressing against him. The couch was ideal for this, the seats less so, but he made it work. Idly he watched Hotch working on paperwork. He was mesmerized by his hands; how he scratched words onto the page, sometimes signing quickly, hand moving sharply like the readout of a heart monitor. Before long Spencer’s eyelids grew heavy and he didn’t resist as he was pulled in by sleep.
Hotch wasn’t sure what time it was, not bothered enough to pull out his phone to check. He knew it was late and he was fairly confident they were somewhere over Texas. He rubbed his eyes then flipped through the remaining forms. They were all standard documentation, things he could probably do in his sleep. Which was good since he wasn’t all that focused. Like Spencer, his mind kept returning to that moment earlier. He didn’t want Spencer to feel bad, that certainly wouldn’t be fair. But it had drawn his attention to an issue he had been avoiding.
What was between them had been going on for months now. It hadn’t crossed into anything physical, anything overt. But he was an intelligent person, he knew where this was going. He’d allowed himself the briefest of thoughts, imagining what it might be like to touch another person again. He wanted to find out. But that meant they needed to decide how they wanted to handle this. He knew he didn’t want to live a secret life. Spencer didn’t belong lumped in with everything else he kept hidden. That would likely only lead somewhere disastrous. No, if they were going to do it, he wanted to go at it full measure. That thought warmed his heart a little, color rising to his cheeks. However, a pleasant feeling didn’t change the complexities. What would it mean for the team, for their families? It was so much easier not to involve anyone else.
As Hotch wrestled with his thoughts, Spencer’s hands started to twitch. He let out a small whimper as his face twisted, something in his dreams frightening him. Without thinking, Hotch reached over and grabbed his hand, squeezing softly as he made quiet calming noises. Spencer froze before relaxing, his face becoming slack as the dream passed and left him with only the white noise of deep sleep. Hotch rubbed his thumb across the back of Spencer’s hand, the skin pale and smooth. It looked so small in his own hand, delicate, fragile even. He looked up only to meet Rossi’s gaze, questioning him from an opposing corner. He felt the heat return to his face but he didn’t let go, only shrugged and returned to his paperwork. If he could do it in his sleep he could do it with one hand just as well he supposed. He’d made his choice and he intended to hold on to it.
*
Dave caught up to him as they walked through the parking garage.
“Hey,” he hissed, placing a hand on Hotch’s shoulder to slow him down.
Hotch stopped abruptly. Anyone who didn’t know him as well as Dave did wouldn’t have realized how the quick reflexes, the instant change in trajectory was only a cover. How it was all his awareness traveling quickly through his muscles to stop the revealing flinch, the instinct to draw into himself and become a smaller target. Immobility was the only way to prevent that reaction from getting out. He’d perfected it over the years, one of dozens of ways he hid in plain sight. Now it seemed more imposing than anything else, to suddenly have the full, none too pleased attention of a six foot plus giant.
Normally Dave wouldn’t have done that, startled him with a touch from outside his field of vision. But Dave had questions and he wasn’t entirely pleased with having to ask these questions. Hotch turned his head to watch Dave come around and block his path to the elevators.
“What the hell was that?”
“What was what?” Hotch asked icily. He was tired and he just wanted to be home, away from people, away from questions. There was so much interaction when they went into the field. Never a moment to himself to think, to reset. He always had to be on when they were working a case, and though he was able to do it, once it was over all he could think of was shutting out the world completely.
“You know what I’m talking about, Aaron.”
Hotch flinched at his name, not expecting it to be used as a weapon, not prepared to have that moment thrown in his face so soon. Dave looked at him expectantly.
“I know what I’m doing.”
“Do you?” Dave was incredulous, trying to keep his volume down it came out sounding strangled.
Hotch glared at him for several seconds before relenting. He looked down at his feet, feeling fatigue pulling him into the ground.
“I do. Please, Dave.” He looked up and he was begging Rossi to understand, to see that this was something good, something special.
Rossi was skeptical but couldn’t deny he was moved by the look in Hotch’s eyes. He hadn’t looked so alive in a long time, like there was something he wanted, something he was willing to fight for. Eventually Rossi relented. Who was he to judge anyone for their choices in a partner?
“Don’t do anything stupid,” he said gruffly but it was all an act. Honestly he’d accept anything that made Aaron happy, anything that kept him with them a little longer. This wasn’t hurting anyone. If those two idiots wanted go down this road, it was none of his business. He’d done his due diligence and Hotch could make his own decisions. He hoped for everyone’s sake it was worth it.

BERNIE SANDERS SECRET WEAPON, LATINOS, COULD MAKE HIM UNSTOPPABLE GOING INTO SUPER TUESDAY
By Hunter Walker and Andrew Romano | Published February 22, 2020 | Yahoo News | Posted February 23, 2020 |
LAS VEGAS — Bernie Sanders’s Nevada caucus campaign ended with a convincing win Saturday afternoon, thanks in large measure to a 37-percentage-point victory among Latino caucus-goers. But the seeds of that victory were sown five years ago when a staffer on Sanders’s first presidential bid had trouble reading a Spanish website.
It was Memorial Day weekend 2015, about a month after the Vermont senator launched his long-shot challenge to Hillary Clinton. Sanders was short on resources; his staff was a skeleton crew, with no one who could translate Spanish. So the campaign summoned Chuck Rocha, the founder and president of Solidarity Strategies, a consulting firm specializing in reaching Latinos and blacks that was launched by Rocha in 2010. He charged Sanders triple his usual rate to work on the holiday.
“I remember sending him an invoice for $824, which was a big invoice for me,” Rocha told Yahoo News in an extensive interview five days before the Nevada caucus. “Little did I know that that $800 invoice would turn into millions and millions of dollars of work for Bernie Sanders.”
In the summer of 2015, Black Lives Matter protesters interrupted two Sanders events, claiming the candidate wasn’t paying enough attention to racial issues. Jeff Weaver, the 2016 campaign manager, hired Solidarity Strategies to ensure that the senator’s work was, as Rocha put it, “reflective of the larger diverse communities.” Soon Rocha was consulting on minority hiring, outreach and advertising for Sanders. By the end of the race he was in charge of all of the campaign’s print communications.
Now Rocha, a 51-year-old self-described “Mexican redneck” who campaigns wearing a cowboy hat and driving a rented pickup truck, has become a leader of Sanders’s 2020 operation. While he remains in charge of his firm, Rocha officially joined the campaign last year as a senior adviser with a broad purview that includes general strategy, hiring staff and overseeing print ads and merchandise. Rocha also crafts the campaign’s Spanish-language ads on television, radio and the internet. If anyone is responsible for the huge Latino outreach effort that has helped propel Sanders to the front of the Democratic pack, it’s Rocha.
The innovative program is a dramatic contrast to 2016, when Clinton had highly specialized minority outreach operations and Sanders struggled to woo voters of color.
“This time around the Sanders campaign really has invested, and you see them everywhere,” says an operative who worked on Latino outreach for the Clinton campaign in 2016 and then worked with a 2020 candidate who left the race. “They are the ones who have consistently shown up at community events, in radio ads and newspapers. It’s very different from what they did in 2016. You have to understand the community first and then build your program around it — and I think they've done that."
That strategy could help make Sanders the nominee. The last time the senator competed in the Nevada caucuses, in 2016, he lost to Clinton by 8 percentage points. The defeat blunted Sanders’s momentum after his near-victory in Iowa and his New Hampshire landslide, and it put Clinton on a trajectory to win the nomination.
Yet there was an upside for Sanders that day: The Nevada entrance poll showed him beating the former secretary of state by 8 points among Latinos. The exact percentages were later disputed — the sample size was tiny, and precinct-level data suggested that Clinton did better than the poll indicated — but the larger implication was clear. In a race against America’s best-known Democrat, Sanders could hold his own in the Latino community.
The revelation took the senator’s own team by surprise.
“We didn't learn ’til the campaign was almost over how popular we were with Latinos,” Rocha said. “We had an idea, you know; 19-to-22-year-old Latinos thought Bernie was cool in ’16. But we didn’t realize that we could win their votes the way that we did, and we didn’t have enough time to take advantage of actually building the infrastructure to capture those votes.”
The lessons of 2016 gave Rocha an advantage heading into 2020 — and it was an edge that paid off Saturday, when entrance polls showed Sanders topping his nearest rival, Joe Biden, 53 percent to 16 percent among Nevada’s Latino caucus-goers. The same statistical caveats from 2016 still apply today. But this wasn’t an isolated incident. In Iowa, the entrance poll showed Sanders winning 43 percent of nonwhite voters; the next closest candidate was Pete Buttigieg with 15 percent. In New Hampshire, Sanders was nearly as dominant, winning nonwhite voters by 18 points and Latino voters by 22, according to the exit poll. Across the board, national surveys also show Sanders with anywhere from 30 percent to nearly 50 percent of the Latino vote.
To date, the Democratic Party has awarded only 2.5 percent of its 3,989 pledged delegates, so Sanders’s growing strength with Latinos hasn’t made much of a dent in the delegate math. But that’s about to change on Super Tuesday (March 3), when nearly 40 percent of the remaining pledged delegates will be doled out.
The good news for Sanders is that Super Tuesday’s two biggest prizes are California (415 pledged delegates) and Texas (228 pledged delegates) — states that also boast the largest Latino primary electorates in America (31 percent and 32 percent, respectively).
The calendar, in other words, is about to heavily favor the candidate who’s leading among Latinos. Mathematically, it could even make that candidate unstoppable.
The Sanders campaign has been preparing for this moment since last summer. On Saturday, the candidate skipped the usual in-state victory party in Nevada and traveled instead to Texas for a series of rallies. Two polls released this month show the senator leading in the Lone Star State for the first time. The day before the caucus, Sanders opted to leave Nevada to campaign in California, where the latest surveys show him ahead of the competition by more than 10 points overall and by more than 20 points among Latinos. Along with Texas and California, Rocha noted that Florida and Arizona primaries are both coming up, are heavily Latino, and are “loaded with delegates.”
“The math is right,” he said.
If Sanders wins both California and Texas, he will likely amass an insurmountable lead in the delegate count — and Rocha’s innovative Latino outreach effort will be a big reason why. Rocha believes campaigns have long botched their Latino outreach efforts by relying on largely white teams, insufficient investment and messages that aren’t “culturally competent.” He has sought to mount a push for Sanders that is historically diverse, large and involves a tailored advertising blitz.
“People say Latinos don’t vote. It’s because motherf***ers don’t ask them to vote,” said Rocha.
With his East Texas drawl and colorful sayings, Rocha is a natural raconteur who veers between swagger and self-deprecation. He’s clearly fond of telling his personal story. It begins in the town of Tyler, where he was born to two teenagers: a Mexican immigrant father and a white mother. After Rocha’s dad left five years later, he grew up eating “government cheese” in a mobile home on the grounds of his mother’s parents’ farm.
When Rocha was 18 years old, he had a child of his own. The experience led him to reconnect with his own father, who got him a job at the local tire factory. The gig ended up being Rocha’s entrée into union organizing — and ultimately, politics.
“Nobody in my family was involved in politics at any level,” Rocha said. “Nobody in my family had ever really graduated from high school, much less college. I was not a rabid activist in any way. I just wanted to get off my regular job to do union work, if I could, so I could drink more beer.”
Rocha became an officer with the local chapter of the rubber workers union, which merged with the United Steelworkers of America in 1995. Through the union hall, Rocha also began working on Democratic campaigns. In 1998 the national union summoned Rocha to Pittsburgh to serve as political director at the age of 30.
A decade later, Rocha left the union to start his firm. His career survived a potentially fatal setback in 2013 when he pleaded guilty to one felony count of embezzling from the union during his tenure as political director. He was sentenced to two years’ probation and fined $2,000 after paying about $12,000 in restitution. Rocha describes the case as a partisan prosecution but also admits he “totally messed up” his expense reports, and he’s well aware the issue could have made him a liability for a presidential candidate.
“I am a convicted felon,” Rocha said. “And when you work in politics, that's not cool.”
Rocha claimed he tried to work for Clinton’s 2016 campaign before Sanders entered the field but wasn’t hired because his conviction came up during vetting. He nearly choked up while recounting the early meeting where he told Sanders and Weaver about his background. According to Rocha, they were both adamant that he shouldn’t spend his life paying for a past mistake.
“I’m not politically afraid of this story at all,” Weaver said in 2016 after Politico highlighted Rocha’s conviction, adding that he wanted the world to see that Sanders believed in giving a former felon a chance. “Please, I’m asking you to print.”
Staff diversity has, in turn, become the cornerstone of Rocha’s Latino outreach efforts for Sanders. He said the campaign has “Latinos in senior management in every department of the headquarters and in every state” — including 76 Latino staffers in Nevada alone, where Sanders also opened 11 offices and spent more than $3 million on Spanish-language advertising. Despite the encouraging signs from 2016, not everyone on Sanders’s campaign thought that a substantial investment in the Latino electorate — which typically turns out at a rate of less than 50 percent — would pay off. But Sanders himself was a believer, according to Rocha.
“It's something he talks to me about every time he sees me,” Rocha said of Sanders. “‘How is it going? What are we doing?’ He wants to know because he’s such an organizer. … He wants new people to vote, and he knows that there’s a treasure trove in the Latino community.”
Rocha’s ads for Sanders aren’t straightforward translations of his English messages; they are written specifically for Latinos and focus on the aspects of Sanders’s platform that most resonate with that audience, including raising the minimum wage, eliminating student debt, reinstating the DACA program, breaking up ICE and the Border Patrol and placing a moratorium on deportations to allow for an audit of past immigration policies.
The pitch is also heavy on Sanders’s own immigration story, which has been much more central to his 2020 campaign than it was in 2016; in fact, the first Spanish-language ad that Rocha ran in each medium focused on Sanders’s father coming to the United States from Europe “broke” and unable to speak English.
“Guess what? That's my grandfather’s story,” Rocha said. “That’s Latinos … somebody in our family. It’s their story.”
But while the overarching messages may be similar, the Sanders camp also adjusts its ads for different audiences within the Latino community. Ads targeted at Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans have slightly different scripts; print and radio ads designed to reach older Latinos have a different emphasis than digital commercials. And some ads aimed at Latinos aren’t in Spanish at all. In Iowa, where the population skews toward more recent immigrants, the campaign largely spoke Spanish; on Spotify, where they’re aiming for young Latinos, many ads are entirely in English.
Because Rocha’s own Spanish is “horrible,” he mainly relies on a 30-year-old undocumented immigrant named Luis Alcauter to design and write them. (Sanders speaks the language haltingly; Rocha told The Hill that he discourages his Anglo clients from using Spanish on the trail “because it normally does not go well.”) Rocha describes Alcauter as his “right-hand man.” He may also be the brash Rocha’s polar opposite: a soft-spoken Mormon who came to California’s Central Valley from Mexico as a teenager.
“It’s an incredible opportunity and a lot of responsibility to make sure that I represent my community and I talk to them and they’re able to understand,” Alcauter told Yahoo News.
Alcauter and the other Latinos on Sanders’s team aren’t just helping with campaigning. They’ve also influenced policy and helped craft Sanders’s immigration platform.
“We care about the issue, and it affects our lives,” said Alcauter. “So we wanted to make sure that we gather together, we put our minds together and we work on something that we're going to be proud of.”
It’s a clear example of one of Rocha’s core beliefs — that minority outreach work should be fully integrated into larger operations.
“We do all of this without a Latino department,” Rocha explained. “I was sick and tired of Latinos being window dressings for campaigns ... of seeing Latino outreach programs that were siloed off, underfunded, understaffed and never listened to.”
According to Belén Sisa, another undocumented staffer, this integration is emblematic of Sanders’s approach to politics.
“It shows what a Bernie Sanders presidency will be,” Sisa told Yahoo News. “It will be the people who were in the frontlines fighting for these things for years who are going to be putting together the solutions.”
Besides advertising, the Sanders campaign is reaching out to Latino voters personally. Bilingual staffers and volunteers are deployed to voters’ homes and have mailed out handwritten notes. Rocha has used databases to identify phone numbers that likely belong to Latinos to receive bilingual texts.
Over the past eight months, Sanders’s Nevada campaign hosted a slew of community events while also dispatching its massive volunteer army to knock on doors around the state. The day before the caucuses, the Sanders campaign announced that it had visited 500,000 homes in the state.
Jose Mariscal-Cruz, a 23-year-old Mexican-American from Reno, told Yahoo News that he made at least 2,000 of those visits. He took a year off from college to work as a field organizer for the Sanders campaign in Las Vegas. On Monday, Yahoo News followed Mariscal-Cruz as he campaigned among the colorfully painted bungalows in the heavily Latino neighborhood of East Las Vegas. He was accompanied by José La Luz, a prominent Puerto Rican labor activist from New York who served as a surrogate for Sanders in Nevada ahead of the caucus. The pair visited about 40 homes to deliver their fluent, finely tuned message to potential voters.
At two of the homes, Spanish-speaking elderly residents indicated that they were from Guanajuato in Mexico. Mariscal-Cruz rattled off his own family ties to the region, and La Luz piped in with a few lines from a ballad about the area by the famed Mexican singer Pedro Infante. The song brought a smile from a woman named Maria who said she and her husband had already voted for Sanders.
“We have a lot of faith,” Maria said.
“With faith, we can move mountains, God willing,” La Luz replied. “We know that the vote of our people is the vote that will be the difference.”
The Sanders campaign has already set up similar ground operations in California and beyond. During a debate watch party Wednesday at Sanders’s East Los Angeles field office, L.A. County Area Director Daniel Andalon and L.A. County Area Field Director Lewis Myers stepped outside to discuss how the operation in America’s most Latino metropolis has expanded over the last eight months.
“I get goosebumps just thinking about it,” said Andalon, a longtime operative who managed Hilda Solis’s winning 2014 campaign for county supervisor. “In the summer it was just us. We were meeting at McDonald’s and Denny’s and working out of our homes, much to our wives’ chagrin.”
According to Andalon, “Sanders has not spared any expense here.” That means opening four offices in L.A. County alone — including East Los Angeles, where the population is more than 96 percent Latino.
“We’ve knocked on hundreds of thousands of doors and made millions of phone calls out of this office,” Myers explained. “Last weekend we knocked on 62,000 doors. The weekend before that was 58,000 doors.”
As a result, Andalon said, “we’ve been able to broaden Bernie’s base to include “a lot more brown faces.”
Both Andalon and Myers said they haven’t seen their rivals competing for Latino votes in the area, with less than two weeks until the vote.
“There is no one who is running a program this robust,” Andalon said.
For Sanders, the hope is that California as a whole is a similar story to Nevada. The campaign is the largest in the field, with 105 staffers and 22 offices statewide — “most of them,” according to California State Director Rafael Návar, “in heavily Latino communities,” with “more in the [blue-collar] Central Valley than any other region.” Sanders’s own travel to the state has followed a similar pattern. According to a tally compiled by the Sacramento Bee, Sanders has held far more public events (37) in the state than any other candidate.
“Bernie came to Coachella for an office opening — a place no presidential candidate has come to since JFK,” Návar told Yahoo News. “That’s just not a place you have a presence usually. We’re in every congressional district and we’re playing for every delegate in the state. We’re not just focused on the urban hubs.”
In 2016, Sanders hoped to make a last stand against Clinton in California’s June primary, but he lost by more than a dozen points in part because she trounced him in the state’s top Latino areas. Sanders’s team also wasn’t sophisticated enough to focus its efforts on the less-populated, less-contested inland areas where they could claim a disproportionate number of delegates, some of which are awarded by congressional district. Ultimately, Sanders carried just eight of California’s 53 districts, allowing Clinton to widen her delegate lead and clinch the nomination. But Návar insisted that “having that experience means we have a lot stronger strategy than in the past.
“In 2016, we weren’t here until a month before the election. This time we’ve been very strategic about where we’ve homed in and are building up our base,” he said.
And Sanders’s campaign isn’t just courting Latinos in states like California and Nevada. Latinos make up just about 6 percent of the population in Iowa, which was the first state to vote in caucuses on Feb. 3. Still, Rocha mounted a Latino outreach effort there. According to a report from the UCLA Latino Politics and Policy Initiative, Sanders won a majority of the vote at Iowa’s high-density Latino caucus locations. That edge helped Sanders win more votes than anyone else in the crucial first state.
Rocha said the results in Iowa helped soothe skeptics of the campaign and gave him “some job security” by demonstrating that the campaign had not “spent all this money for nothing.” Rocha and his team plan to continue targeting smaller Latino populations in other key states, such as Wisconsin.
For Rocha and the other Latinos on his team — particularly the undocumented immigrants — the effort is deeply meaningful. Over lunch at a Mexican café in East Las Vegas, Sisa said the experience was beyond her “wildest dreams” — an opportunity to make the case that “immigrants deserve better, regardless of being documented or not.”
“I think no one [else] has been bold enough to say, ‘You may be undocumented, but you deserve health care,’” Sisa said. “‘You may be undocumented, but you deserve tuition-free college’ — because we all deserve those things.”
With his decisions to limit legal migration, end the DACA program and separate undocumented immigrants from their children, President Trump loomed large over the conversation.
So, it turns out, did his plane. In keeping with his strategy to shadow the Democratic primary by holding rallies in each early voting state, Trump visited Las Vegas during caucus week. As Alcauter left the café, he pointed to the sky.
“Look,” he said. “It’s Air Force One.”
As an undocumented immigrant, Alcauter said he believes Trump “from day one has been fighting against me.” But if the campaign is successful, Alcauter could go from feeling targeted by the president to being on his staff and taking flight with Sanders on Air Force One.
“I definitely dream about it,” Alcauter said. “That’s the reason we’re doing the work we’re doing.”

(Left) Tobe Hooper (Right) Richard Kobritz
RICHARD KOBRITZ-Producer
Richard Kobritz is a creative producer in the Thalbergian sense. He is, in other words, a benign monarch. He believes in hiring the most talented cast and crew available to him, establishing the ground rules before shooting begins, then setting them loose to do their best work. As vice-president for production at Warner Bros Television, Kobritz monitors all of the studio’s TV output, a task which only allows him time to personally produce one film a year.
Strong willed producers are, of course, nothing new in television, where individual expression is stifled and a director’s personality is no more evident in a weekly series than in the commercials that interrupt it. But Kobritz, apparently, is different than most producers. His need for control is less a matter of ego than a desire to create a quality production. Kobritz trusts his intuition and wants to surround himself with collaborators who agree with his basic concept, yet will not hesitate to offer suggestions or changes. The measure of his formula’s success is that Tobe Hooper, still reeling from disastrous producer interference on two features and a fruitless 18 months at Universal Pictures, emerged from SALEM’S LOT with nothing but praise for Kobritz.
Kobritz entered the film industry in 1964 at age 23. He worked as an assistant director on several Doris Day comedies, then served as production manager on three films directed by Gene Kelly: A GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN, HELLO DOLLY and THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB. He toiled briefly as a producer in the exploitation field for a few small companies, notably Fanfare, a now-defunct outfit. “Everything you’d do for a company like Fanfare was horror in some way, shape or form,” says Kobritz, who remembers the unreleased HOT SUMMER WEEK as representative of the firm’s exploitation horror product. Kobritz later worked as an associate producer for director Martin Ritt on “a couple of features,” including CONRACK (1974), starring Jon Voight. He has also been under contract to Twentieth Century-Fox, for whom he produced a number of television pilots.
You produced John Carpenter’s SOMEONE IS WATCHING ME.
Right, which was called HIGH RISE when we shot it. The network changed it. It didn’t look like an NBC made for-television movie. It had a much more distinctive style. A lot of NBC’s TV movies all tend to look like THE ROCKFORD FILES.
That’s obviously intentional on our part, and I think you’ll find the same thing is true of SALEM’S LOT. I only personally do one of these a year, because I’m also in charge of production here, which doesn’t permit me to do more. I guess I’ve got a few rules. Number one is I try to find a director who has never directed television, and who has probably never directed a union film, but who has directed a nonunion feature in Carpenter’s case DARK STAR and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, and in Tobe Hooper’s case THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It’s kind of a strange process I go through. It’s hard to find something you really want to do if you don’t have to do one, so you tend to be choosy within your own parameters. I generally gravitate toward the same kind of material, you know, horror, terror, something like that in a kind of Hitchcockian mold. To put it that way sounds very egotistical, but I don’t mean it like that. I’m just trying to get us into clear categories. Anyway, once I find that material we progress to the screenplay and in the meantime I try to see every movie I can, try to come up with somebody who is young and who is inexperienced with all of the problems of working a heavily unionized major studio operation.
Why is that?
Because I’m looking for somebody who is visual, who isn’t wasting his time worrying about the politics of what the unions are doing, that’s my job. More than anything else I want a director who is visual, who knows how to tell it in terms of camera, not in terms of dialogue, or not in terms of conventional camera coverage. There are two rules I always stress, and in both John and Tobe’s case, they not only embraced what I said, but that’s the way they would have done it anyway. I don’t want a zoom lens on that camera and I want to keep that camera moving. That’s, unfortunately, become the way of television. So what I try to do is a small feature within a short shooting schedule which is difficult, but that’s television.
What changes did you have to make in the novel in scripting SALEM’S LOT for television?
We went with the concept of a really unattractive, horrible looking Barlow. We went back to the old German NOSFERATU concept where he is the essence of evil, and not anything romantic or smarmy, or, you know, the rouge cheeked, widow peaked Dracula. I wanted nothing suave or sexual, because I just didn’t think it’d work, we’ve seen too much of it. The other thing we did with the character which I think is an improvement is that Barlow does not speak. When he’s killed at the end, he obviously emits sounds, but it’s not even a full line of dialogue, in contrast to the book and the first draft of the screenplay. I just thought it would be suicidal on our part to have a vampire that talks. What kind of voice do you put behind a vampire? You can’t do Bela Lugosi, or you’re going to get a laugh. You can’t do Regan in THE EXORCIST, or you’re going to get something that’s unintelligible, and besides, you’ve been there before. That’s why I think the James Mason role of Straker became all the more important. And he is, I must say, perfect. That sounds like puffery, but he was well worth it. We wondered if he would be available, if he would be attracted to the material and he was available, and he loved the material. It’s just an incredibly good piece of casting. We were fortunate. It’s a very good part, but he gives it so much himself he’s such a classy actor.
What was Stirling Silliphant’s involvement? He’s listed as executive producer. Did he also do a script at any time?
He wrote a script for the theatrical version, which was never used—and of course, it was not used for this one. In fact, he has nothing to do with this picture. There is an agreement with the studio because of his prior involvement with the project. He made some encouraging phone calls, and I think showed up a couple of times to say hello to people, but he has nothing to do with the production. I understand there’s a Writers’ Guild arbitration underway challenging Monash’s solo credit on the script. We should know the outcome of that soon. No other scripts were ever considered. Monash was never even offered the other material. Obviously, the source is the same everybody read the book, everybody wrote his own screenplay. This is the one we went with. I would hope Paul would get sole credit. Of the three other what we’d call “contributing writers,” Stirling Silliphant has not protested, Bob Getchell has not protested, it’s just this Larry Cohen who had a really lousy screenplay. That was back before we were ever involved with it, back when the feature department had this very hot book, went through three screenplays and could do nothing with it.
What other changes were made from book to screenplay?
The changes we brought from Paul’s original draft, which was very much like the book to what we ended up with from him make for a very classy movie. The major changes included Barlow, and that the Marsten House must never be clean and immaculate inside like Straker is. The house was very crucial, it must look like a veritable cesspool. I even put the line in the script myself that it must look like a shithole, only being that graphic just to get the point across. I wanted the audience to say, how could this man of Edwardian dignity live in such a place? And yet he does. And the third point was not to have Barlow in Eva Miller’s cellar as he was in the book at the end. it just doesn’t work I mean, from a point of sheer construction in a well written screenplay, he’s got to reside inside the Marsten House. He’s a major star in the picture the third or fourth most important character he’s got to be there. It may have worked in the book, but not in the movie. That house is the essence of evil God knows, Ben Mears talks about it till he’s blue in the face so to me that was very important. And one last thing I pushed the death of the last vampire to the end of the film. There were three violent deaths right in a row Straker, Barlow and her and all of a sudden, the killing and the device of killing became a really nothing, you know? So I changed that.
In what way does the inside of the house resemble a cesspool?
It is a house of horrors. I don’t mean with ghosts and that, I mean the dirtiest, filthiest house you’ve ever seen, as opposed to being pristine, which it is in the book. I like that dichotomy of Straker being immaculately dressed all the time, without a piece of lint on his lapel, and yet you walk into this mansion with him, the interior we created on a stage and you know the plumbing doesn’t work, the walls fairly seep with moisture, and you say to yourself they must defecate on the floors and in the corners because you know there are no bathrooms in here. And that all adds to it. I just couldn’t believe the beautiful Victorian Gothic mansion in the book it was like the last scene in 2001, and I felt that would play against the horror. It worked well in the book, it wouldn’t work for us. I believe that to be a distinct improvement, I really do.
One of the gossip magazines said David Soul was drinking on the set.
No, I didn’t notice any of that. It’s a very difficult script in that there is very little dialogue and the story is very intense. The pressure was hard on him. I even told him one day, “Let the neuroses play it’s working for the character.” He was not doing a normal script, with a lot of dialogue and everything explained. He was doing a very serious genre piece, dealing a lot in effects. I don’t mean special effects only, but where scenes tied into other scenes because we’re going for a special optical and stuff like that. In the same way that Cary Grant could question, in NORTH BY NORTHWEST, “Why does my character react this way? I would never be walking into a wheat field in my suit” and finding five very logical reasons why not to do it. But that unfortunately is the way it has to be done. That’s the whole thing with that THIRTY-NINE STEPS, SABOTEUR, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH genre of Hitchcock. By the same token, we were going for a genre piece here that was not always explainable in normal script language and normal dialogue, and I’m sure that would be very frustrating to an actor who takes his work seriously.
Did you realize how much Lance Kerwin and Soul would look alike?
Yeah, but they really don’t. They’re both blonde, but, David is incredibly so he’s this blonde, beautiful, California young man. Lance is also light haired, but there’s this astonishing kind of forlorn, haunted expression to him. And he’s a remarkable young actor, without a doubt the most talented young actor I’ve ever worked with. He is good, that boy, because there’s an innate sadness not as a person, but as an actor. He’s able to portray a depth and a profundity you just don’t find in kids that young. You mentioned effects a moment ago.
Were there a lot of opticals, or mostly physical effects?
Almost all physical effects, very few opticals. It’s not a picture where we’re going to spend weeks with miniatures or in post production ironing out the details in the opticals.
There’s a superimposition of Barlow’s face on the moan in the last page of the script.
Yeah, I wrote that. We’re testing it and we’ll see if it works out. I put that in myself as a blue page, only because I kept thinking of it and finally I decided, why not? Lees have a final little laugh at the end. For the rest of the picture there’s no laughs at all, and this is kind of cynical and a little ironic.
Another effect is the disintegration of Barlow, will we see that? On TV, usually you see it but it’s so abbreviated.
I know. I hope you see it. We shot it. That’s obviously out of my hands, but the network approved the script and it’s in there. There’s a still of Ed Flanders impaled to a wall of antlers. I can’t imagine how we’ll see. You will not see that. You’ll see what’s in the script we fly up to the wall with him and the moment of impact is in his face. The long shot would be strictly for European theatrical, like the stakings.
How did you show the town burning at the end?
We never show it for two reasons, (a) we didn’t have the money to show it properly and (b) it’s too time-consuming to show that. I really want to wrap the picture by that time. I think the audience has caught up with us as far as what vampires are, the killing of vampires, the appearance of vampires in a sense we must now go to the ending in Guatemala as quickly as possible.
Another change was the use of hawthorne instead of garlic.
Yeah, you know why? I was tired of garlic. And I was tired of every cheap joke, is it gonna be an Italian vampire, all that kind of stuff. So I said, lets go with something a little different, and our research people came up with hawthorne. I’m just tired of all the NIGHT GALLERY business where you hold up garlic and he says, “I’m not Italian,” or a crucifix and he says, “But I’m Jewish” I just didn’t want to get near a line like that, to wind up with an unintentional laugh at a moment when I definitely don’t want it.
You obviously did more than just “produce.” Were you on the set?
Constantly.
And that didn’t bother Hooper?
Not at all. I don’t want to put words in his mouth here, but I think it added security. It was a very good collaboration. Things were discussed when we shot, before we shot. It was a very close relationship. I’m sure that doesn’t happen much.
And you shot on location
Yes, during July we shot two weeks in Ferndale, just outside of Eureka, sort of a New England Victoriana village, about 100 miles south of the northern California border. Then we came back here and shot an additional six.
The location brings to mind HARVEST HOME, the NBC miniseries based on Thomas Tryon’s book That was like four hours of boredom with a half-hearted climax.  Did you see it?
I did, and that was my feeling, too, unfortunately. Again, I think we have better material going in. Number one, the screenplay is better. They just had Bette Davis and were hanging their hat on one performance. What we’ve tried to do in everything from our vampires to our head vampire was to be different. We’re using a remarkable contact lens which is like half a ping gong ball, fits over the whole eye, and can only be worn for 15 minutes at a time before it has to be removed to let the eye rest for 3O minutes. They’re not just bloodshot eyes. I wanted an effect like the eyes in VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED and its sequel CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED I wanted them to be sick and decayed and, I hate to use the word but pus-filled. We also added one element which had not been done before, we put a reflective material in the contact, and when we turn our lights on it, they glow back  at us. That way we didn’t have to do burn ins, we didn’t have to do opticals, all of which you never have the amount of time to do thoroughly. I looked at VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED three weeks ago when it played here, and I realized how seldom their eyes really glow in the picture. For us, when there’s a vampire, his eyes are shining, and that is important. Another thing was that we didn’t fly our vampires in on wires, because even in the best of films you can see them.
In THE EXORCIST you can..
Yes, exactly. We wanted a method whereby we could actually fly a person in through a window. So we took a normal crane, like a Titan crane, and we put a long pole at the end of it, and we put the actor in a body harness at the end of that, so we were able to shove him into a room, and at the same time control his body movements. He could fly in, he could straighten up, he could tilt to one side, as long as the pole was not visible in the shot. We wanted to get a feeling of floating. And the effect is horrific, because you know there’s no wires, we’re shooting the whole window including the sill and wall above it. It was also something we were very nervous about, because you haven’t got the time, in a television show, to make a special effects mistake it had better work. We also did something else we shot the whole thing in reverse, and are projecting it forward, in the levitation and floatation scenes, because we want the smoke to be behind the vampires. That way we have more control over it. I think it turned out better than we had even hoped for it has a very spooky, eerie quality to it. And the key, again, is getting a visual director, because if you read the script, you’ll see there’s not much dialogue. That’s not to say there aren’t those expository scenes, those getting acquainted scenes but for a four-hour movie of the week, it is what you’d call “light on dialogue.” And that’s all the more reason why it has got to be visually strong.
Are you shooting a hard and a soft version to accommodate the foreign theatrical release?
Not in terms of nudity or anything like that, but in terms of intensity.
You mean, in the TV version, a stake will be driven through a vampire’s heart and go out of camera range, while in the European theatrical, the audience will see the blood and —
Exactly. We’re protecting ourselves. It’s a different market out there, one where you have to pay, not where you see it for free. But in a horror picture done primarily for television, you’ve got to deal in scares instead of blood, which is what we’re trying to do. What we want is to have the bogeyman jump out of the closet at the audience every few minutes. If it works, were successful. If we’re not successful we’re not successful. And that’s the hard part—trying to find someone who can pull that off. I’ve been lucky. In Carpenter’s case, he’s a guy we’ll come to recognize, not just because of the success of HALLOWEEN, but in the next few years through universal recognition, as a major talent. And the same is true of Tobe. Because I happened to like THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, which I think is brilliant. I saw it a few times and I know they did it for $100,000 in 20 days with a student crew, and all those things that don’t help to make a picture good and still there was an incredible visual quality. What was hinted at and never seen really intrigued me.
There isn’t that much outright blood and gore in TEXAS CHAINSAW. You just think you see it
Exactly. There are some beautiful touches. My God, I saw the way the camera was moving, the way the exterior of the house was established, things you don’t normally see in big features, let alone television.
Dollying in under the swing after the girl as she enters the house..
Right—that scene in particular. I couldn’t believe how well that film had been made, especially under those conditions. But once I saw it, I had my director.
How did you find Hooper? After losing his Universal contract, and the fiasco with THE DARK he just disappeared.
I didn’t know anything about a Universal contract or any of that. I heard about that later. For me, I find the best way to operate is to find the project first and then the director. I just ran a lot of films, some of them by people who were very well hyped. Some were okay, some were really terrible, and there were just none that compared to TEXAS CHAINSAW. I hadn’t seen it before, when it came out. It was just a title I knew of— it’s obviously a very memorable title. I knew it had made some money. I had heard Billy Friedkin had liked it and had recommended Hooper, that he’d worked on a few subsequent projects, some of which were aborted —one, EATEN ALIVE, was made. That I never did see. But once I saw TEXAS CHAINSAW, my mind was made up. I didn’t even know whether Tobe lived here. We found he had an agent, and we called him up. Obviously I had to have a meeting with Tobe, to tell him how I worked, which was probably totally different than anything he’d been exposed to even at a major studio, even at Universal. I said I work very closely. It’s essentially my decision what the final script is. Not to say your voice won’t be heard, but—
But you’re the boss.
Right, and this is what I want to make. Last year I did this kind of picture, this year I’m doing this kind of picture. They’re in the same genre, but it’s a dissimilar subject matter. I like a very fluid camera, I want incredible visual style on the picture and I also want to make sure it is cast impeccably well. We naturally have to deal with some television names to satisfy the network, but I really want to make sure it’s a classy act we’re putting together.
That’s an unusual list. I would never expect a TV producer to say he wants a fluid camera, he doesn’t want zoom lenses. Was Hooper impressed?
I don’t know. Well, yeah I think anybody who hears that is very surprised. I know I can keep a pace going and there’s certain things I can change or modify as we go along. But I care that the thing ends up looking like a feature, that it just is not something that looks like every other television movie with a modern jazz score behind it. Then again, it’s a subject matter that I’ve always liked and want to see dramatized well. I’m not into that, I don’t collect stills or anything, I just feel I want to make an interesting horror movie one with class, with believability. After I met Tobe, I decided he was the man to direct SALEM’S LOT. So I went to the network, they said okay I don’t mean they were overly enthusiastic. They didn’t even know who a Tobe Hooper was and I just said, “Don’t worry.”
Was any other director ever considered?
No. There were a lot of directors that wanted to be considered, but weren’t. The book was originally purchased by our feature department, which then had several screenplays done on it and this is going back a few years ago and not one of the screenplays worked. The president of our TV division thought if we could sell it to a network as a four-hour, we might put out another screenplay with a brand new writer and see if we could lick the problem. We got Paul Monash and structured some things very much different than the book and totally different from the previous screenplays I mean, they were just bad screenplays. In a crazy way, SALEM’S LOT works better in a longer version than in a normal, theatrical version.
Not much happens in the book for the first half and then everything explodes.
Also, the more you read of Stephen King—I’m like you, I’ve read most of his stuff—he’s damn hard to translate to the screen.
The characters all think to themselves. .
And all those internal monologues that give you goose-flesh while you’re sitting alone reading area real problem to deal with cinematically. So we had to work on that.
I heard somewhere that George Romero was considered to direct.
Well, I always liked NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and his name was one that I’d thought of. But I never contacted him because I’ve got all the problems of, will he come out here, can I convince the network when a man only makes pictures in Pittsburgh? It was easier with Tobe. But more important, I just liked TEXAS CHAINSAW better. It’s a film that has gone, I think, beyond a cult status, which it always had.
In theatrical features today, its probably safe to say no holds are barred in explicit horror. Since, on TV, you can’t show that, and even if you could, you’d panic the average home viewer, can SALEM’S LOT satisfy both the horror buff and the mainstream audience?
I think we can. It is really superbly cast. Even in the supporting roles, we always went for actors instead of stars. We have in Ed Flanders who plays Bill Norton, the doctor a man who just got an Emmy nomination for TRUMAN AT POTTSDAM. We wanted complete credibility, complete believability. That to me was the real horror, a nice little town that’s slowly being eaten alive by vampires and all of a sudden wakes up to that realization. We had to get actors of a caliber that could give us the credibility, not just nice TV names who are limited in their acting ability. That’s Number One. Number Two is playing Barlow the way we did. He’s not in competition with Frank Langella, not in competition with Bela Lugosi it’s back to German Expressionism in the final analysis.
And it’ll be the first time most people will have seen that, anyway.
Right! And again, trying to give it believability by not having him talk. He’s a monster, a fiend. And one last point, to me and I’ve heard this before and never quite believed it, but now I do, you’re frightened more by what you don’t see than by what you do.
The credo of the Val Lewton films of the 1940’s . .
That’s it exactly. There’s that off-screen noise. . .and you don’t have to see a person’s neck ripped open, just that quick cut of the vampire or whatever, a hand coming into frame, is more frightening. HALLOWEEN was the best horror film I’ve seen in the last five to seven years in that respect, because you were jumping out of your seat every two minutes, and every scene was manipulated but it was a valid scare. And that, to me, was important. You really weren’t seeing a bloodbath up there. It was almost like seeing a 3-D movie, because things were jumping out of the screen at you. In a way, I think that’s what any good horror film tries to do.
Specifically, whose idea was the NOSFERATU look yours, Hooper’s, the make-up man?
Mine. We brought the concept to the make-up artist, and he made a few sketches. We’d say, “No, we want the eyes darker”. . . and it was his and miss, trial and error. It went like that until we had what we wanted. And early on, 1 knew who the actor was going to be. Even back when I worked with Paul on the screenplay. Barlow, once he was determined to be ugly, was always going to be this one actor in my mind, if he was living in the United States.
Reggie Nalder-had you seen him in MARK OF THE DEVIL?
No, I remembered him from Hitchcock’s film THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, the remake, and I thought he had a really unattractive face then. He was the one for me.
Curtis Harrington used him in a TV movie a few years ago, THE DEAD DON’T DIE (1974).
Really? He obviously works sporadically because of his face, unfortunately. But I knew that if the man was in town and available, that was my Barlow. Nobody else was considered or even discussed.
So you telescoped the book a great deal—binned dialogue, combined characters
Only because there was no way of doing everybody in the town, especially when their fate was relatively the same. Its a small town of 2,000 people and we tried to concentrate on the doctor in the town, the sheriff in the town, the children in the town, and some other peripheral characters-a representative cross-section. But where possible—except in the case of what wouldn’t translate cinematically or was just too long—we are very faithful to the book.
Everybody I’ve spoken to on SALEM’S LOT says CBS wants the movie on in November. Can you do that?
I know they’d love to put it on during their November ratings sweep, and I think its a good piece of material for a sweep week. But I also know that in this sort of movie, a good, atmospheric, old-fashioned, Bernie Herrmann type score is essential, and weve got to get that done yet.
Do you think one season CBS might be anxious to get it on in November is they don’t want a vampire movie on after 1979, that the crest will have passed?
No, I don’t think that’s it at all. This craze is going to go far beyond the end of this year. Especially when you’ve got so many important movies coming out, in particular Kubrick’s THE SHINING, another Stephen King novel which I’ve got to believe is going to be a masterpiece that’s going to lead all of them. I would think thats going to carry the genre even further in success and longevity.
Are you concerned about TV censorship of SALEM’S LOT?
Well, my problem is obviously going to be Standards and Practices what they’re going to allow us to show and what they’re not. The script went by them. They approved it. But I know they’re going to come back and say they want a horror film but they don’t want to scare people either. I have no doubt that’s going to be the battle. I wouldn’t mind a disclaimer at the beginning, “Viewer Discretion Advised” if anything, that usually lifts the rating points up. I just don’t want to start cutting out the horror of the picture. To make a horror picture and then start cutting out the horror, why make the damned thing in the first place?
