if you're okay with sharing, I was wondering what the page size + resolution you work with for your comic is! I've been trying to move from traditional to digital comics but am unsure what a good resolution to work at is (￣w￣);;

If you’re super sure that you’re won’t be printing your digital comics out, then dpi doesn’t matter, and canvas ratio will be dependent on what kind of comic you’re making (manga, 4-coma, strip etc). However, I recommend making it with printing in mind, so that there’s no room for future regrets, should you one day realize you actually want to print it (you won’t want to go back and edit every page for printing). Heck, even if you don’t sell it, it feels super good to be able to hold it physically in your hands!

In that case, it’s not too different from traditional. Disclaimer: I use the Japanese manga standard, so please take this as a reference only and alter it as you need. If you’re sure you’re not printing or are already familiar with (jp) printing standards, you can skip to the end of the post!

Printing Size & Resolution:My comics are B5 sized (182 x 257mm) at 600dpi grayscale (300dpi for coloured) with 3mm bleed on all sides. For your reference, B5 is commonly used for doujinshi (~24 pages), while the smaller A5 (148 x 210mm) is for tankoubon (~100? pages). If I were to print my comic, I would print it as A5 given how expensive it is to print so many pages in B5, but I think it’s better to work bigger just in case. If you need a scale reference and you happen to have bought my book(s), the OiSuga comic is B5 and the HnK art book is A5!

File Setup:Clip Studio Paint’s comic option sets up the file as below. They have a tutorial HERE that explains each element and more in full detail and it’s super helpful even if you don’t use their software.

The canvas size doesn’t really matter. It’s A4 here only because it’s like the letter size for East Asia, i.e. the most common standard paper size (many artists still sketch or line traditionally).

The 3mm bleed is room for cutting error. The image is printed on a big paper, then the paper is cut down to ②, and the cutter isn’t always accurate. So ① is the file size you’d hand in to the printer, and ② is the size of the book you’ll get from the printer. Any drawing that you want to extend to the edge of the page needs to extend to the edge of ①.

③ is standardize to be 150 x 220mm for the A4→B5 setup. Any text/important stuff needs to be inside this frame on the bound side of the book so it doesn’t get covered up (for perfect bound books; saddle stitched ones won’t matter). So in the example above, the bounding side is on the left. This frame also commonly used for panel boxes that don’t touch the edge, like the middle panel here.

If you’re not following manga standards, but are thinking of printing, the main thing to take away here is the dpi and the 3mm bleed! Some printing companies might ask for 5mm so check with your local printers.

Edit: I just want to add that if your comic is more than 30 pages, it’ll need to be a perfect bound book and you’ll need to watch for things getting eaten on the bound side. Saddle stitched requires the number of pages to be in multiples of 4, while perfect bound just needs multiples of 2. As for choosing between B5 (bigger) and A5 (smaller), the more pages you have, the more you should consider going with A5 to reduce the cost of printing (and shipping if you’re selling - it gets quite heavy).

For posting online (specially, on my smackjeeves classic theme), I upload them at 850px width (at B5 ratio, that would be 850 x 1200px). I don’t know about other computers but it looks nice on mine so I went with it haha. There isn’t really a standard for webcomics, but whatever the final size is that you’re posting, your work file should be something you downsized from (I usually go with double, at the very very least). You can find a webcomic you like, download a page, and look at its file details for the size/ratio they used for reference.
