Hey, so you seem to be the the All Knowing in terms of twst. With Glorious Masquerade getting a rerun soon, I was looking at the cards.
So what the heck is up with Jamil's freaking hat? I'm sorry but I can't look at it without laughing. It looks so stupid. The closest thing I can think of that matches it is the combined crowns of upper and lower Egypt, but this is the equivalent of France so that can't be it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I’m flattered that people come to me with their questions, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that I’m just another TWST fan like you are! ^^ It’s stressful to be considered “all knowing” or a fandom authority 💦 That puts a lot of pressure on me to speak on certain subjects or to interact in a certain way (since people might put too much stock into what I say), and then that ends up detracting from my enjoyment. I’d rather not be put on such a high pedestal, please and thank you.
Now, onto the question!
According to Rollo in 1-13 of Glorious Masquerade, the costumes the NRC students were gifted are “patterned after designs that are over 500 years old.”
Tumblr media
If we extrapolate this to real life, the implication is that these costumes have roots in Renaissance era (14th century to 17th century) French fashion. Interestingly, Rollo’s own hat is similar to a tricorne, which was primarily worn in the 18th century… so technically, his hat is more “modern” than what the NRC students wear 😂
So I browsed through records of hats from the indicated period and guess what? I couldn’t find an exact match—though I did find a lot of hat designs that I found way sillier than what the NRC boys have. Like… sorry, what is THAT 😭
Tumblr media
Some headwear which bears a vague similarity to Jamil’s hat are the Egyptian combined/double crown (the pschent), which Anon has already mentioned, and the French hood, which was worn by women in the 15th century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The actual closest match I came across was the mitre, a liturgical headdresses worn by Roman Catholic officials. If you look at it from the front, it doesn’t look like much, but it definitely has the height of Jamil’s hat. But then look closer and you’ll realize the mitre does not have one single flap of fabric, but rather two.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you take the front flap of a mitre and fold it back, you would probably get something very similar to what Jamil wears. (Note that the black part of the hat is NOT his hair, but is fabric that is part of the hat.)
Considering that Noble Bell College is styled like a cathedral and that the Renaissance era from which the Masquerade Dress clothing derives is characterized by the rediscovery of classical literature, art, and philosophy… perhaps it’s not so strange to see a hat borne of religious associations.
… Why did Jamil specifically get this hat? Not sure, I’m not religious myself so don’t ask me to psychoanalyze him from that angle 😂
The golden part securing the front is unusual and does not appear in French fashion of the time (at least not from what I could tell?). It’s styled like pschent but more likely is meant to be turban-like due to Jamil’s inspiration, Jafar, having the same feather sticking up in the middle of a bulbous hat. You’ll notice Jamil had a “feather” too, albeit metal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To summarize, I think the design of Masquerade Dress Jamil’s hat borrows from multiple inspirations and not just one/old French fashion. Yana has stated before in a March 2023 interview with the Apple App Store that the cultures of Twisted Wonderland are unique and that the clothing that appears in the game are not “reinterpretations of existing costumes”. She seems to incorporate elements from both high fashion and from a variety of cultures to arrive at the final designs. For example, there are elements of many Nordic cultures in the Apple Pom outfits, and the Pomefiore uniform has a Japanese kimono-like silhouette despite the dorm being based on the the Evil Queen (originating from a German tale). I assume something similar happened when designing the Masquerade Dresses; Yana and co. wanted to combine elements and make something of their own.
Final comment I'll make, the shape of Jamil's hat looks like a kind of dumpling... It makes me hungry.

hi!! regarding the homestuck ask game, how bout jade and/or gamzee?
glad you asked! So jade is actually one of my more original designs, I haven’t taken strong inspiration from one artist or another. I just kinda winged it. Two big inspirations have been calware and ttsquid on tumblr. Here’s an example of calware’s jade:
Ttsquid is definitely a bigger influence though:
they draw a LOT of jades, hehe. I borrowed the green lenses, the hair flowers, the skin tone, and probably a few other features! My first homestuck fanart was referenced from one of their artworks, and it was an image of Jade.
Oh also this post (below) is pretty much how I draw Jade’s hair and body type! I saw that design and practically mumbled “yoink.” LOOK AT HERRR
Other than that, I kinda just… based jade on what my best friend looks like, e.g. same or similar teeth, hair, glasses, skin tone, etc. i don’t think it was intentional, their personalities are just so similar! So yeah it was a mix of tumblr artists I like and real life people I like. I made her desi because I enjoy making Homestuck characters have similar ethnicities to me, and she should get to be hairy (like me :o ) Plus, @/floralmarsupial has some pretty neat jade art and some headcanon lists that helped too. Jade is such a cool character with a distinctive look, and I’m glad my current design is pretty cohesive.
I have never drawn Gamzee in my entire life. Im not kidding. Least favorite character, even if he had a few good lines. I haven’t seen a ton of gamzee fanart either? Though if I were to draw him, it seems like mr-foods’ art would be a good inspiration! Thank you for the ask, it was fun digging up posts for this one

BARRAYARAN COSTUME DESIGN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The process for costume design:
Had fun looking through a whole bunch of reference images to try to create a costume set that reflected the strong sense of tradition with midieval-esque holdovers from hand textiles that would have had to be the norm during barreyars period of isolation, while also accounting for the wealth of the current barreyaran aristocracy and their access to modern galactic trends and clothing. I also didn’t want the midieval influences to be generic-fantasy-vaguely-european-bulshit, so I also tried to find reference images with styles, patterns, and silhouettes that where somewhat reminiscent of the French, Russian, and Greek cultural heritage barnyard first settlers may have brought with them. That being said, it wouldn’t make sense for any of these traditional garments to have been preserved with 1-for-1 accuracy from there earth origins over the many centuries (cuz like, irl traditional dress in these countries is less and less common) so I didnt want to just copy exactly historical garments.
OH! And then I also had to make sure the men’s clothing also reflected the pseudo-military affectations which Bujold has mentioned in multiple books as being popular in menswear amongst the vor cast. (Ex: the formal riding boots, and the two swords carried at formal events, or less formally vor “town clowns” also wearing casual clothing reminiscent of a military cut.) but! In order to do this, I had to think of both what would have been military uniforms both in isolation-barrayar and modern barrayar, and which aspects of each set of military uniforms would be incorporated into modern men’s fashion. Would any women’s clothing also reflect this warrior trend?
Finally, since all of this costume design was brainstorming for the dinner party scene, I wanted to make sure that the clothes matched the personalities of the people wearing them. Like aunt Alice and Professors Vorthis are both middle aged Vor-caste women, but will have vastly contrasting style. Alice being alice, her clothing will likely be both perfect for the occasion while also a sleek and elegant combination of the leading barreyaran fashions, while also giving a nod to traditional barreyaran costume at times as she is a representative of both the state and her old-vor house. The professora on the other hand, will probably opt for something comfortable and cozy, while not especially showy, as she is more concerned with her studies and gardens and is not super involved in the Vorbarra-sultana social scene.
Some of the reference images I used:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And many many sooooo many more. So much borrowed creativity from all over the internet I feel bad I can’t more accurately site all my sources 😞
Also some random cool aesthetic modern shit that I thought had fun sci fi vibes as well as some *sigh* generic-euro fantasy clothing cuz sometimes you need to be a little basic.
Also a lot of cool art by artists I love that is just dope costume design and totally all their work. Idk the names of a lot of them cuz I’m not really active on social media and only really see the images amidst thousands of others in my Pinterest hoard but I always recognize the artsyles and creativity and wind up saving them to reference art boards 🙈
Some that I do remember and love a lot are cy-lindric, Juliette, and Celia Lowenthall

This is Halloween
We’re just a few days away from the new life series, and judging by the status of a server I’m on and Trafficblr as a whole, none of us are quite ready
But I do what I gotta do, and the spoopy season is upon us, so here we are
I said I would be making Halloween costumes for the kids a few days ago, and I’ve slaves away all night and day preparing this presentation
No but fr, I had fun. Hope you like em
Tumblr media
Liana as Mumbo Jumbo
We’re starting out strong boys. Liana considers Mumbo her biggest financial rival, so their relationship is very, well, rivalesk. At least on her end. Mumbo’s still confused. She probably spent the entire Halloween night imitating him the best she could in a half mocking manner, and both her dads found it hilarious
Tumblr media
Wes as a cat burglar
Because what is Halloween without someone in a tight latex cat suit? Wes was 100% forced into this, and as much as he’s a little uncomfortable, he also finds it kinda fun. Jassy def tried to make him wear heels as well, but his balance is shit. He also managed to talk his way out of the tail, since he already has one.
Tumblr media
Gertrude as a mobster
Well, she is a king, might as well expand on the brand. Absolutely slaying too, I need to put her in more suits. She probably spent the entire Halloween night sitting mysteriously in some corner, “smoking” her fake cigar.
Tumblr media
Johnny as an angel
Cute ironic costume. This was actually suggested by someone in my dm’s, so I thank thee for the idea. The little wings were probably hand crafted from chicken feathers that my lad spent months on, and he’s very proud of them. He’s using the wreath crown to hide his horns as well, they ruin the angelic look. The lyre was borrowed from Novo as well, and he absolutely does not know how to play.
Tumblr media
Jassy as a ghost
Can you just put a sheet on your head and call it a day? Yes. But is that any fun? Fuck no. Chains will be rattling all night, and she’ll be throwing them around left and right. The white makeup is probably crappy af too and will start to come off after like, half an hour, but she still looks pretty fucking cool. Will try to scare as many people as she can.
Tumblr media
Jekiv as the real monster
A lot of Cleo designs incorporate the classic stitches across the skin, and Jekiv does have that as well on some places where his skin has just come off. But dressing as “Frankenstein’s monster” would be too easy. No, let’s go for the true villain of that story, Viktor Frankenstein himself. It’s a bit fitting too tho, since Jek is a necromancer. He’s just a lot nicer to his creations, amongst other things
Tumblr media
Novo as little red riding hood
His gf is a wolf, and the reasoning for his costume ends there. Very disappointed that Gert didn’t want to go in a couples costume, but oh well. The red hood is strangely comforting to him as well, what with his mom and all. He’s girlbossing

Finally, FINALLY finished OoT Sheik redesign page!!!!! This took, for some reason, five months to complete, because somehow very little inspiration was sparking in my mind for his outfits. It was easy to put off because his face was easy and even though I.... do NOT like his game outfit, thanks to smash bros it was easy to substitute in the alternate version in my mind. But I finally got around to actually doing the full redesign!
Further notes under the cut:
I actually hadn’t initially planned on changing Sheik’s main outfit, the blue stealth garb, as much as I did, particularly in the case of getting rid of the head bandages since those were pretty much the only part of the design I didn’t dislike. But I found a particular reference image while looking for actual historical ninja garb for inspiration and I really liked how the hood and fabric almost-armour looked, so I incorporated it! Now this gives him the opportunity to dramatically pull his hood up and down at key moments, making him become either more or less mysterious depending on how mysterious and angsty he wants to be.
The Sheikah Eye is semi-concealed under the top layer of his garb. The Sheikah have been submerged in the shadows for a long time, reclusive and secretive for their own safety-- these days, most common people in Hyrule don’t even know they exist. However, they are starting to become more visible again, and Sheik actually plays a big part in that.
Sheik has been travelling Hyrule for some time, now, and has not been home in years, unable to return to Kakariko village until his own quest is complete. He’s had some rough tumbles of his own, and at some point lost one of his vambraces, hence the layer of bandages on one arm. He hasn’t had the chance to replace it properly, yet.
Instead of the regular stripes, I borrowed the swirling patterns from the ancient Sheikah tech of botw, like I did with Impa as well. I feel like this does a good job of tying the aesthetics of the different games together and maintain common visual elements, while still keeping an ancient feel to it and signalling that this garb is from a different, distinct era.
The base suit is meant to be quite tight-fitting, but it’s gotten kind of loose because Sheik is too on-the-go to feed himself properly smh. Bulk up Sheik!!!
The second outfit is as casual as Sheik gets. This is what he would wear just hanging out in Kakariko village. It looks plain, but the beads show that he is a fully-fledged warrior monk. He has the Eye tattooed on himself as is traditional for sheikah monks, though at this point in history it is tattooed on the back, not the forehead like in both earlier and later eras, further representing the hidden-ness of the Sheikah.
This look is largely based off the clothing of Impaz from twilight princess, who is heavily implied to be Sheikah. Impa’s outfits also share many of these same elements.
Personally I’m really happy with these final products. Would love to hear feedback and see what you guys think, as well!

Hi! I read a lot of your posts on AI and I’m just curious about your take on the impact of AI on people and culture? I don’t use twitter so I don’t know what is being argued with AI, but my personal qualm is that it could obscure human experience. I’m not really concerned about the ownership of publicly available media, but I am worried about how AI can be used on a large scale by corporations to control human narratives. We already live in a world controlled by media monopolies, almost everything is owned by Disney, and their stuff is absolutely formulaic enough to be written by AI. While humans are borrowing just as much cultural information, one is still an original thought about how art should be created and presented. A corporation’s use of the technology will prime whatever is released for pure profit. It doesn’t need to be thoughtful at all. Again, this is already happening, but AI is just another way to streamline it. That’s part of why the writers strikes are happening right now. That kind of automation technology can shoehorn us into the necessary ends that corporations find most profitable. After reading your posts I realized that I was clumping in the technology with the ill intent of corporations. I wasn’t really considering all of its applications in its current form and I was kind of focusing on fear. You’ve changed my mind about some things. But human learning is dictated by modeling. We are sponges constantly absorbing the media shown to us. What if what’s available to us is always something easily automated by a company with its own interest? Avoiding that media completely would just result in personal isolation. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this as someone who understands the technology!
I think the key point here is one you've already made; corporations are already churning out mass media pulp optimized for profit, and have been doing so for years. At present, that pulp is probably more profitable when produced by humans, at least in terms of the overall story design of our media, so incorporating AI probably won't change much about its quality except for noticeable shortcuts that are deemed acceptable. But this is already true in digital productions. Corporations will probably still try to compete with a baseline of quality to make big budget releases acceptable to markets. You can't cut all the corners with cheap tech, which is why we are not seeing those shitty knock-off animated movies in cinemas. Things need to be a least competent even if they are schlock.
In the long term, if AI really is able to produce entire movies or similar that are comparable to human-made mass blockbusters, then the implication of that kind of depends on who is in control of the AI. It might lower the barrier to creating good looking movies, it might just let Disney make more animated princess flicks faster. I don't think either of those outcomes is essentially bad. There's good and bad ways it could manifest.
Specific failings of the technology could result in things like subtle bias, or feedback syndrome where the AI has little new content to work on as all new artworks are themselves AI generated. These are both technology issues that can be addressed, though, and are far enough off at the moment that it's hard to speculate about any real harms.
Honestly, the biggest negative impact currently threatened by AI is the obvious one that the writers are striking over; capitalism isn't set up to provide for human livelihoods under increased automation. The only solutions to this problem are strict regulation on how corporations can employ automation, or, perhaps more simply, watering down or abolishing capitalism. UBI is most realistic avenue for this at present, I think, even if it's not totally ideal (I'd like those corporations to not exist in a form that creates a profit motive, thanks).
Cultural concerns aren't nearly as scary a prospect on the horizon for me. Yeah, AI can be used to produce cheap schlock, but humans can already do that, can even automate it with free software somewhat with no machine learning required. As long as humans are ultimately deciding how and when the cheap schlock is made, as they are now, I doubt much will change about the essential character of popular art. This is all just my personal opinion, though. It's hard to predict exactly how things will shake out.
Thanks for asking!

Behold- MY CLONE WARS MOBILE SUIT CONCEPTS/IDEAS (in 501st colors)
Tumblr media
Not sure if these are in super high quality- so might either repost or edit later (if I can) but here we go! The art itself is not mine of course- these are kitbashes/customs done using lineart sourced from official gundam source books on Imgur and Pixiv
So to preface this- I have always had a crossover idea in my head of “what if mecha was in the Star Wars universe?” And while I’ve dabbled with direct crossovers in my time a lot… the idea of INCORPORATING the said elements I enjoy about both, or trying to include another franchise into a larger one’s “portfolio” is something I WHOLEHEARTEDLY enjoy a lot.
With that in mind, awhile ago, I went about customizing and kitbashing some Universal Century Federation Suits to have a more “Star Warsy” feel to them and fit in with the GAR and clone elements/sorta “homage” to them. Also for this, I had gone in with how Gundam tends to treats Mobile suits, as the standard form of to fight MOST ground battles and such- with space having their type of MS for that. (This is a very simple way to explain it)
Tumblr media
OFC, since I’m doing 501st colored MS- I had to do Rex’s as well, that’s why his P2 still retains that more shaper P1 visor look- and has additional Stark Armor to help make his “Pauldron” stand out- and the two head mounted Vulcan pods sorta stand in for his pistols, plus his rangefinder.
These Republic Mobile Suits use mostly GM and Jegan elements- with the “Phase 01” borrowing more of the wonky design of the Jegan and G-Line head (plus GM II legs for base units and officers have GM III for a sense of higher performance and skill) due how I felt it fit with the way Phase 01 armor was supposed to be “awkward and uncomfortable” while the Phase 02 leans more into the GM III and Type D Jegan, going more for a SOLID and “rugged” sort of look with how more streamlined it looks, plus with how GM III and Jegan Type D’s are more than often easier to customize (at least in the way clone armor is) it made it easier to give some more “references” to the clone armor with things like “pauldrons” and skirt armor in place of the “Kama.

hello everyone it’s time for the Verity / Cygnet Sys propaganda post
Tumblr media
I’ve been making OCs for a really long time but Verity is one of my most recent shining stars. my true pride and joy.
Tumblr media
I’ve always been really keen on making OCs and writing stories just as an art/writing hobbyist but Verity is one of my biggest faves since ey’re essentially a love letter to a lot of my special interests over the years and she’s just a combination of so many different design elements I love in media and storytelling! Like simple and effective silhouettes and characters who have to grapple with their identity and make compromises with their future.
People might’ve read this on her toyhou.se but Verity is essentially the mind of a (basically) very powerful beast that was revered as a god in her universe ^-^ her other half/true physical vessel is Vanitas who was designed by my awesome girlriend! She’s currently borrowing Teth’s body while they search for a way to reunite amidst the tense political climate of Deihexis where a revolution is currently taking place directly related to Van’s sudden disappearance from the capital city ^^
Besides that Verity has system swag and ey’re the host of a system, though she and the others don’t figure that out until later on shhhh.
Tumblr media
Verity incorporates a lot of my favorite design elemenets, like glasses, heterochromia, braids, capes, frilly and flowy clothes…but I’m really fond of how I incorporated infinity symbols into her design
Tumblr media
and I love this alternate design I made for her!
I have a playlist for her here on YouTube and a very dear friend of mine translated this song 春隣、風となり which I consider her sort of unofficial theme song! (The lyrics are really good please look at them)
Thank you for considering voting for Verity/Cygnet sys!!!!!!!! It means a lot to me as a multiple creator that wants to get more stories out there about us…
(P.S. I’m the artist but I’m submitting this from my personal/main blog!)

New Start GO! - Sunny Day: Chapter 5
Location: Company Office Characters: Hajime, Tomoya, Mitsuru & Nazuna
Tumblr media
ㅤㅤㅤ< The next day. A meeting to present new ideas from the public relations department. >
Tumblr media
Nazuna: Everyone, thank you all for coming today.
Today, we will present our new promotional proposal – “Sunny Day Live”.
Hajime: This performance will include the four members of “Ra*bits”, who are currently here for work experience as part of “New Start Go!”...
And it will be a promotion between us and the collaboration company.
Tomoya: The special feature will be the outfits for the performance…
These are the rough sketches prepared by the design department.
The season for new beginnings is nearing, so I believe we can strengthen the company’s image by incorporating that factor into the designs.
We decided to go with a Japanese-style because we think it’s important to let everyone know that this was a company that originally focused on Japanese textiles.
Mitsuru: We looked up the history of the company and spent a long time thinking about it…!
Next, the new employee has a presentation on the necessary budget and the anticipated effectiveness of the advertisement!
Hajime: (...Good. The new employee is presenting smoothly.)
(I was worried he might lose his confidence during the meeting, but he should be fine.)
(I’m glad he was able to take that one step forward.)
(We’ve also stumbled and fallen down numerous times. Over and over.)
(But we managed to stand back up each time because we had each other.)
(...Was I that sort of person for you?)
(When you’re happy, sad or facing a difficult time… Being by your side no matter what you’ve gone through…)
(I’d like to be an idol who can do that for other people.)
Nazuna: …That concludes our proposal.
I’d like to begin the Q&A section of the meeting. Please raise your hand if you have a question.
Why do we know about the history of the company even though we’re just here for work experience… you ask?
Well… I suppose I’ll let Hajime-chin answer this.
Hajime: Okay. We “Ra*bits” highly respect you all for offering us this job opportunity.
In order to be fully prepared, we read the documents provided for us several times.
We also did our own research on the internet or borrowed books at the library.
…That might sound quite admirable, but we’ve been so busy recently that there were times where we couldn’t fully be prepared.
“New Start Go!” is a variety TV show created by the people who appreciate the work we do.
So naturally, we would research everything we could about the company that we would be working at ♪
Tomoya: Hajime is especially studious so he taught us many things about the company. We hope the proposal will be a good reflection of the things we learnt.
Hm? “If the performance is given the green light, will we receive invitations to it”... you ask?
Mitsuru: Of course! Everyone gets an invitation, y’know!
We wanna shine bright on lots of people. That’s my goal as an idol!
…Oh, maybe I should’ve spoken more politely there! Sorry!
Nazuna: Ahaha, they’ve gotten so used to Mitsuru that they’re not even surprised.
I’m sure that just goes to show how friendly they are. Be careful right until the end, okay~?
…Alright, we went off on a tangent, but we should have enough time for one more question.
Does anyone else have something to ask?
…If not, then we’ll end our presentation here.
Alright. We hope you’ll consider our proposal.
Hajime: Thank you for listening, everyone.
Tomoya & Mitsuru: Thank you, everyone!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nazuna: Well, this one week sure flew by, huh.
Today was the last day of our work experience… All that’s left is to hear the results of our presentation and “New Start Go!” will be finished.
Good job, guys.
Mitsuru: Yeah, good job!
I thought working in a suit would be uncomfortable at first, but I’m a bit sad to see that I won’t be wearing one tomorrow, y’know~
Nazuna: Yeah. It was a short period of time, but I don’t think I wanna take it off just yet.
Even the president thanked us for making the workplace a more cheerful place and for bringing out the new employee’s abilities.
I don’t think I was very good at anything, but maybe I’ve contributed to something at least.
Tomoya: No no, I’m glad you were the main presenter during the meeting, Nii-chan.
It made me realise once again that you’ve got good public speaking skills. Listening to you speak made us forget our worries – you were really reliable.
Nazuna: Ahaha. I guess all my hard work in the Broadcasting Committee paid off.
It’s all thanks to our experiences in the end. We never know when we can use them.
Hajime-chin, you also mentioned this when we were still deciding whether or not to accept “New Start Go!”, but working at a company office resulted in a good experience, right?
Hajime: Huh? Oh, you’re asking me? Sorry, I was just immersed in my feelings…
………♪
Nazuna: Ahaha, yeah, I shouldn’t even need to ask, huh. I think I know what you’re thinking when you’ve got that expression on your face.
I’m happy for you, Hajime-chin. Well done.
Hajime: Thank you! You too, Nii-chan ♪

more weaving nerdery
so i have like. fallen down a rabbit hole of this goddamned tablet weaving, which is both funny and like, not.
Sometimes a thing catches you, y’know? and you just want to hyperfocus on it and do nothing else. And that’s what’s happened here, which is fine. It’s that it’s complicated enough to be absorbing, but not so much that it’s actually difficult; my tiny, frazzled, distracted, memory-leaking burnt-out little pea brain can actually achieve reasonable results even under the cognitive load of (*gestures broadly*) current events and such. So I’ve now achieved two entire finished completed bands, and have finished them off in like. Reasonably competent ways. I’m going to sew down the beginning end of my first one a little better, because not only does the beginning of the weaving need a bit of reinforcement as one does, but I also fucked up the weft in the first quarter-inch, so if I can just sew that down to stabilize it the whole thing will be much more usable. Also I finished the second one off by braiding the long fringe and I don’t really like how it came out so. Anyway! Experiments.
What am I going to do with these two finished bands? I don’t know. I’m going to make a third one, something with a white weft, because I loaded the shuttle with white and started using it on the white/black/blue second band, and immediately realized that while the bands are warp-faced, the weft is visible in a few tiny spots and having a design with a black border and white weft looks awful. So I need something with a white or off-white border for my next trick, because I’m not unloading that shuttle. (Yeah I wove the whole band with an improvised shuttle made of a bit of a paperboard box folded in half and cut to shape and scotch-taped down, it was not graceful but it was effective.)
I want to try mixing threads. So far I have used only 8/4 carpet warp from Webs, which I own in four colors-- black, gray, blue, and cream-- but I bought some #10 crochet thread yesterday at Jo-Ann’s, and I own a very weird assortment of other threads/strings/yarns that I’d love to incorporate. And the book I’m using, borrowed from @unicornduke (A Simplified Guide To Historical Tablet Weaving), has descriptions of a number of extant examples, mostly recovered from graves, and many many of them are made with mixed fibers. (Very often, linen weft and wool warp, so you see the wool and the linen holds it in place but is largely invisible. I specifically want to try that.) One, notably, from the Hallstadt salt mines, is wool warp with horsehair as the weft, and I desperately want to try that, but am coming up blank on anyone I know IRL who has a horse!
I recently texted my older sister to ask if I could get some sawdust from her husband’s saw mill, and they obliged. Her daughter rides horses at a stable and I’m trying to guage how weird it would be to ask if she could collect me some hairs next time she’s grooming one. I need like.... a handful of long mane or tail hairs, just to make the experiment. They don’t need to get spun together, I can use them single-ply, it’s easy enough to weave in ends-- I’d need like. Probably eight to ten inches is the shortest that’d be useful, and I’d need, well, a dozen that length at least to make the experiment.
Anyway. A project for a later date, but something to keep in mind.
But the thing I came here to note down is the use of fishing swivels to manage twist buildup. Part of this is my horrible allergy to watching instructional videos, which I fucking *hate*, but as I’ve tried to research tablet weaving, I’m finding much of it is described so generally. And so as I was reading, the only information I’ve found is fishing swivels for sale, and the description ‘use fishing swivels to manage twist’, with no information besides that.
cut for some photos:
So, what I did, was I warped my inkle loom in the usual way, where you just tie the warp all the way around the warping pegs in a circle? But I tied an end of the warp to each side of a fishing swivel, and called that good. That seems to be how one would use a fishing swivel to manage twist, right?
If you are a person who is good at knowing how physical objects interact you might be snickering at me right now, however. For as I learned, no, that is not all you need to do.
Fishing swivels, like any mechanical thing with moving parts, are easily-fouled by tangling strings. I learned that if the ends of your string are long enough to tie, then they’re long enough to get stuck in the business bits of the swivels. ALSO, the little metal rings at the ends of the swivels are kind of... slippery? Hard to keep your overhand knot tight. You’re going to have an absolute beast of a time with your tension, as the swivels get unevenly fouled by the ends of the yarns, and also some of the knots slip. It was pure hell, and I had to take the band off very early and give up, because of this, when the whole point of the swivels had been to avoid what had happened with the previous band, where I did not reverse direction early enough and so the woven area of the band advanced past the free space left by the twist unwinding as I wove backward, and made it impossible for me to continue far before I ran out of yarn.
Tumblr media
[this is sort of in the middle of the process-- i have the red yarn needle through the one loop of all the swivels to hold them together so they don’t keep sliding around, and you can already see how the ends have wrapped around the whole business so much you can’t even see the swivels. This is where I was starting to suspect a problem. and no-- holding one end of the swivels in place with a yarn needle isn’t going to prevent them from working, the point is that there are two ends and each can independently swivel as much as you want in any direction, so I was trapping one end and leaving the other free, and it was actually useful in the beginning for keeping the tension manageable, so later when I stopped doing that it made things bad, but the yarn ends had, in my defense, already made things very bad by then, so.]
So. Here’s my theory on how to use the fishing swivels, which I have not seen explained anywhere.
Tie your warp to the swivel-- I used one swivel per tablet, so four cords per swivel, and of course you have to thread the card on before you can tie off the warp. I tied it as tight as I could. I would say to additionally tie a second knot at a slight distance from the swivel, so that your ending fringe is stable and your weaving’s not coming up against the securing-knot, which is a pain when you’re trying to undo it later. Tie it as tight as you humanly can. Then take the loose ends beyond your securing knot, trim them to be all the same length, wrap them tightly around the area between the securing knot and your second, weaving-starts-here knot, and then fasten them down securely with masking tape or something like that. You must seal them down so that they cannot get fuzzy and get into the swivels. I have seen no discussion of this and yet cannot see how this technique would work without something like this being implemented.
Repeat for all cards, and do this on both sides of the swivel. There can be no loose ends, or they’ll foul the swivel mechanism.
I’ll get photos next time I try it, but I’m going to do, for my third experiment, a pattern with balanced twist, where you alternate the directions the cards turn so that the twist doesn’t build up in the first place, simply because I haven’t tried that so far.
Probably someone showed all this in a Youtube video, but since I can’t fucking stand videos instead of instructions, it’s the same to me as if nobody had ever talked about this. Do feel free to research it, if it’s a thing you’re interested in, and also feel free to tell me if someone seems to have a better method, but understand that if you link me a video I’m very unlikely to watch it. I have the best of intentions but a whole lot of antipathy toward the video format, which is the worst of both worlds-- both slower than reading, and also my memory is such that I will not remember the crucial bit of the instructions after watching it, so I wind up both no smarter than I was and angry from having wasted a whole bunch of time.
Anyway. I digress. I’ve resisted the alternate-direction patterns because I know I 1) can’t count, and 2) can’t reliably tell clockwise from anticlockwise, so I am absolutely going to be wildly confused the entire time I’m weaving, so I suspect the alternating-direction patterns are Not For Me, but they are a very large subset of tablet weaving patterns so I need to at least try them.
Yeah, somehow I reversed the pattern in my fishing swivel experiment band, 3/4 of the way through the band, even though i would swear to you that I turned the cards away from myself the entire time without variation. Just, somehow in the middle of this, without having flipped the tablets or reversed directions, the pattern started going the other way. Which is not how that works, so clearly I reversed the direction, but I swear to you I turned the cards the same way every time, and I don’t understand how this happened. If I got that confused in a pattern that had no reversals, I’m just telling you now I’m going to be hopeless in a pattern that does have reversals. This is dyscalculia; I simply cannot see the difference in rotation directions, the way I can’t figure out which of my hands is the left one, so this is going to be a problem for me. But maybe it’ll work out anyway. I don’t know.
(For a while at work I often had to go through big orders of slide scans and rotate the sideways ones, and the command said “rotate clockwise” or “rotate counterclockwise” without illustrating the direction, and so I would constantly have to tip my head as I imagined the face of a clock, which I might remind you I can’t read so about 75% of the time I would guess wrong. I cannot overstate how thoroughly my brain does not work for this task.)
anyway wish me luck
here’s what that second band looks like for most of its length, though, by the way, which is pretty acceptable:

Welcome to the Thanatology Anthology, Danny Phantom AU/Rewrite FAQ THREAD--
With me, your host, theplanetprince.
SO, I suppose the first question should be--
Q: What is the Thanatology Anthology?
A: The Thanatology Anthology is a series of fics/art made by me, theplanetprince, based around the 2004 nickelodeon superhero Paranormal SciFi cartoon Danny Phantom.
Simply put it's the name for how I would reboot the show. Including designs of certain characters, characterization, aspects of world-building, redos of moments in the show, etc. Truthfully, told I'm unsure what label to put my series of fixes and nitpicks under-- I've heard some people call it an outright rewrite/reboot of the continuity which I'm more willing to agree with.
Although I am borrowing a lot of aspects from certain aus, ecto-hunger, the core stuff, though they don't really bare a lot of resemblance to the original material or I simply can't find sources to double check if I'm getting all the details right. There are a lot of differences from the canon that I'm incorporating that some people might want to borrow and use for their own writing like for example Danielle (AKA Ellie) being Danny's future daughter rather than a clone. I guess I use the au label as well, in case people like my ideas enough to use.
I'm probably making it sound a bit more complicated than it actually is, but the idea is that I'm rewriting the show from the perspective of an older fan influenced by horror movies who wants to give the characters a bit more nuance and life.
Q: Okay, but what does 'Thanatology Anthology' mean though?
A: Ah, Thanatology is a word that comes from Thanatos IE the greek spirit of Death. Thanatology means the Study of Death. I thought I was clever. A few other work-shopped titles were "In the midst of our lives we die." "Pine box parables" "Six Feet Shallow" and "Death via Misadventure"
Q: When does this rewrite take place?
A: It can really be whenever you want it to be, but I've always shot for the late 90s, or early 2000s.
Q: Do I have to read these in order?
A: I mean, I'm not writing it in order! I'm writing the story as it comes to me. One piece might take place in the character's Freshman year and the very next I release might be their Junior year. I've done my best so far to cobble together some kind of order as well as catagerize stories via the series function on AO3 by the character arcs. Like for example Wes's arc is under the series label "That Messed up Thing That Happened To Wes When He Was A Kid." Each story in that series is ordered by every appearance of Wes that pertains to his character arc. You don't have to read these stories in order if you don't want to! I'll try to put enough context in each piece to make it approachable.
First Year (Freshman):
Amity Park Anomalies
Cherry Flavored
Second Year (Sophmore):
Pick Your Poison
Schrodinger’s Adolescent
Q: You said you were making changes to the canon, what kind of changes are there going to be? What are you keeping? What are you mixing around?
A: For the most part the concept is still the same, Half-Dead teen antics. ✨Now gayer✨
I'm mostly removing world-building concepts that no longer mesh with how I think the story will flow. I'm mostly trying to rework the appearances of the Medieval Ghosts Eudora and Aragorn. That is strictly a personal preference of mine, I just don't find high fantasy concepts that interesting-- and they're kind of confusing when you open them up in a more SciFi setting like Amity Park. It feels more realistic for aliens to mesh into the setting than medieval ghosts/dragons. I probably won't be including the likes of Pariah Dark either. However, I do have plans for the Fright Knight that I hope people will find interesting. The furthest back in time in setting I'll go is probably to the witch trial days because I find that setting is not only easier to write for, for my skill set, I just find folksy/witch horror oodles more fascinating. Also with the villain set, I wanted to incorporate more Guys in White lore and more original ghost hunters. Making the humans in Amity Park just as threatening as the ghost threats. I'm putting more of an emphasis on technology, ghost weapons, and characters versus high fantasy elements.
Q: With characterization, how do you plan to change that?
A: Truthfully, I don't plan on changing much except fulfilling character arcs to iron out the main character's flaws from the original run of the show. It never felt like they grew or evolved much beyond simplistic stereotypes. I plan on getting into the heads of our teenage protagonists to really bring out their best and worst aspects so they can grow. Not to mention conclude Valerie Gray's arc from the original run-- as well, as giving the fan-created character Wes Weston a villain arc in tandem.
Q: What Ships are endgame?
A: TeddyGhost. I wish I could be more blunt about it (LMAO)
but Teddyghost or some poly quartet of the Main Trio + Dash. This started with Schrodinger's adolescent a Danny/Dash fic, and I would like to keep it that way. But I promise not every fic in this series will be centered around a romantic pairing. Some of them will just be good, clean, bad one liners and fights. Other ships that will probably get some spotlight are VeggieBurger (Sam/Tucker) and PunkPoet (Ember/Ghostwriter). I'm not too sure what the official name decided on Val/Wes is but DeceasedDesist is my personal label for it haha.
Q: I want to help/I want chapters and releases to come out faster-- Where can I find more stuff?
A: I'll be real with you, I am just one person and I am just making it up as I go along! But if you would like to help contribute, maybe consider checking out the stories I do have on my AO3, Under the Thanatology Anthology Series. What really helps motivate any author is comments and asks. Share my work! I don't mind. But as long as there's still work to be done I'll be here doing it.

Here's my take on Vedis from 'The Rise of Flynn Rider'.
This was quite a challenge - coming up with something totally unique yet still feeling like the Brotherhood. I was tinkering with stuff even after I finished the coloring. I knew going in he had to be large, muscled, and blue eyed, with the Brotherhood tattoo on his bicep, as per the description in the book. After some experimenting I decided on giving him a beard, deep-set eyes, a pear shape, and to incorporate a lot of circles. I figure using circles would set him apart from the rest of the Brotherhood, which are a lot of squares, teardrop and triangle shapes.
For Dark Kingdom Vedis, I incorporated a lot of the Dark Kingdom style - fur, belts, leather, facial hair, dark hair worn long. I made him a longbowman, as I feel like a ranged warrior would round out the group nicely. And I just find the idea of a big, hulking guy forgoing sword and axe, to riddle his enemies with arrows quite amusing. For some reason I pictured him as a few years older than the Brotherhood we meet in the series. I really wanted to give Brotherhood Vedis a slightly shady look. Like maybe there's a reason we never saw him with the rest of the Brotherhood. I mean, would you trust a man who trains captive animals for a ring of criminals? He also just blabbed to the Baron about the moonstone, the thing that he swore to defend, even at the risk of being controlled by the Mind Trap. Gotta love the idea of a shady Vedis who betrays the Brotherhood, and runs off to join a circus. Unfortunately the final pose came out stiff, but I'm blaming that on my sore shoulder.
The Vedis Eugene meets in the book I designed to be more world weary. Still a bit shady, but the book describes his voice as deep, yet soft, so I leaned into that with the pose. He's discarded every scrap of his old life: cut his hair shorter, forgone the fur and leather. He sports a brand new scar which I'm sure has a great story behind it. I kept his attire simple - perhaps trying to avoid too much attention for some reason. He's a bit more grizzled, and with more of a slouch, and a bit more kindness around his eyes. I read into him being very regretful over the Dark Kingdom, but it seems to me the wound goes a bit deeper than losing one's home. It's pure speculation, but again ties into my idea that he did not leave the Dark Kingdom on good terms, and is sorry for it.
Just the idea of Vedis - a knight fallen from grace, who winds up joining the circus with a criminal ringmaster and his gang of thugs - I would pay money for that story! That's such a good concept for a character. And pairing him up with a couple of kids like Eugene and Lance - what an absolutely fun adventure that would've been! Where is my story of a grumpy knight-turned-circus-conman taking two orphan would-be thieves under his wing as they try to discover the secrets of his shady past? Like I want to see twenty chapters of Vedis loudly complaining about these two kids, and then at the very end when the Baron tries to kill the annoying pipsqueaks, Vedis takes a stand, and finally does the right thing in his life, and reveals that he has all this knightly training and can actually give the Baron a real run for his money while Eugene and Lance set up the Biggest Con of the Century (and also manage to save Vedis, and he won’t say it, but he’s secretly very proud). I'm sorry, Vedis. You deserve your own story, bud.
@pennumbra’s Vedis design is also amazing, and I kind of wish I could have borrowed some elements from it. The sketch for Brotherhood Vedis looks especially cool.

Do you happen to have any character design tips or tricks? I have a folder full of model sheets and scans from funny animal comics and cartoons that I look at for inspiration, but I fear that might be making my designs too derivative. I'm starting to think there might be only so many ways to draw a toon wolf haha.
WELL… your method is the exact same as mine LMAO. so the first thing i’d say is don’t worry about being too derivative or not derivative enough! it’s GREAT to be conscious about the decisions in your designs, and very important too! but it can get stifling if it’s all you focus on. be derivative—you have time to change things later if you’d like!
i’m like you, i hoard anything i take inspiration in (and sometimes don’t look at it ever again because i get so caught up in the hoarding over applying HAHA), and that’s a great start. your mind is a bank—the more you store, the more you have to use from. expand from your horizons and search in corners you may not think to look, because you may find something you want to incorporate!
it’s no secret i don’t draw much original art, which is something i aim to fix this year. it’s not on purpose, i just have so much that i want to draw and not enough time to do it that i try to prioritize what i want to see the most, and my own characters aren’t the highest on that list
Tumblr media
(but it’s growing… the reason i’ve been relatively quiet on here outside of work is because i reset my Animal Crossing island and plan to put my characters in it so i have motivation to keep the island HAHA so i’ve been preoccupied with that. Bluebear says hi)
IN ANY CASE, i think the importance of shape language does get a little too much exposure; i don’t like sticking to the formula of men are stocky strong squares women are futile hourglass figures etc etc etc, i strongly encourage breaking those old stereotypes and drawing the way you want, BUT with my own designs i do like to incorporate the importance of shapes.
to self advertise i’ll use my character Tyson as an example since she came from Me Own Brain and has been with me for awhile. below is Ye Old Evolution, from 2016-2021:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
almost all of these designs are VERY derivative in some form, and her current design is purposefully derivative! the second and third were heavily inspired by Camp Lazlo, Ren and Stimpy, SpongeBob, and Chowder, and it shows (i just straight up stole Chowder’s nose and Ren’s eye colors)—the fourth was post-LT, where my own style was coming into play. slightly more constructed and less stylized/flat
Tumblr media
the last two are purposefully “generic”, so to speak—i referenced drawings by Otto Messmer and Jim Tyer and tried to incorporate what i liked about them in her design. i aim to make a webcomic with her and the rest of the characters, and my goal is to make it look as close to an actual comic book from 70-80 years ago as much as i can.
as a result, i borrowed a lot of design clues; i simplified her leopard spots to be generic, opaque circles, matching with the “funny animal” style of leopards, but also to make people instantly say “okay, that’s a leopard”. same with the cat ears—she looks much more like a kitten than a leopard, which is also slightly intentional. i felt the triangular ears also gave her a bit more energy as opposed to the soft, circular ears—diagonal angles convey energy and movement, but i rounded them out to still make her seem young and “soft”.
Tyson’s current design is very purposeful. leopards are quiet, elusive, good at blending in with their surroundings. i wanted Tyson to be the total opposite—she’s a brash, hyperactive overly optimistic kid who has a big heart but loves to get into trouble. she tries to make friends with everyone she meets and is undoubtedly annoying. so, to reflect her antithetical nature, i made her bright red, social, and loud, purposefully contradicting everything leopards are not. she’s the odd one out and isn’t ashamed of it for a second.
i made her uniform baggy and dirty to make her seem a little naïve, inexperienced, out of place while unafraid of getting down and dirty. she’s the only character on the team without shoes to make her seem more “wild”. it’s hard to see with the raised cheeks, but (for now) i have her eyes slightly angled off, with round tops but a flat, squared off bottom, like a tall half circle shape. i feel it gives her more rigidity and energy, and taps into certain design trends of yesteryear
THIS IS SO LONG AND I AM SO SORRY. here i am dumping about my characters when it’s the last thing you asked. the truth is—i’m not exactly sure! because you’re method is mine as well. but taking inspiration and keeping a vast reference of things you enjoy will help you wonderfully, and you can always change your designs however you see fit. while i think shapes shouldn’t purely dictate the personality of the characters (seeing as it can lead to certain tropes or stereotypes), i do like to do it in little doses as an “easter egg” of sorts. i don’t expect people to point out everything i just said when i show my designs, but it’s something i CAN mention when discussing them, and it’s certainly something i will mention when introducing my other characters.
in my case, having an end goal certainly helped—i purposefully want to mimic the look of funny animal comics and draw inspiration from them constantly, so that’s an easier situation for me when i’m purposefully trying to be derivative, but i also try to make them my own. take it from me personally—your style will develop naturally. you ask yourself how and how and how and why and it’s not developing and this is stupid the internet lies to me, and all of a sudden you have a style. you can change it anytime you like. sticking to one style of drawing is very limiting and suffocating. but it WILL happen and you will find a method that works for you.
if at all possible, try to enjoy the process more than focusing on if you’re doing something right or wrong! the more you draw and more you surround yourself in things that inspire you, the clearer things will be.

I’m curious what you think of borrowing some things from the Chinese culture and fashion and adding it to my wardrobe as a non Chinese. For example using certain fabrics that are made for something specific to use in something completely different, or wearing hair jewelry with regular dresses or use the embroidery patterns for a dress or a shirt and so on, keeping in mind that I’m not trying to represent the culture not trying to be historically accurate, but rather borrowing a piece I like from it. Would you put this in the cultural appropriation category? It’s unfair to call it inspiration since I’m literally taking it as it is. Also keeping myself educated as to not use something that has religious or historical significance inappropriately.
Hi, thanks for the question. I'm personally kind of on the fence about this one, mostly because I haven't seen so many actual examples of non Chinese people incorporating whole Chinese elements into their daily wardrobes... I think it'd be ideal to first do some research to make sure that the item in question is civilian fashion and not of religious significance, and then look into the original purpose/application of the item and then adapt it in a similar way. Possible examples could be sweaters with 八团 batuan pattern designs or wearing 璎珞 yingluo with regular or 18th century inspired dresses. There are plenty of Chinese shops selling these historical inspired pieces (汉元素), and most of their products are pretty non offensive to wear for non Chinese people so I recommend checking them out. Or if you find antique Chinese jewelry those should be fine for wearing, since they were historically also exported and worn by non Chinese people.
In my opinion as long as you acknowledge the source material and approach it in a non offensive/stereotypical way it should be fine. However I only speak for myself and I know there are many many other Chinese people out there who may not be ok with it, so if someone feels offended please just don't do it :3

Phantom in the Twilight - A Peaceful Summer Day 6

Summary: Transfer student was punished as a result of her loss. Koga grumbled that their punishment was too easy and simple, but Hinata stated that because Koga did not set specific rules about the punishments, the rest of the group cannot be blamed. Rei thought of Shu because Hinata’s behaviour felt like a performance, and brought up Shu writing play manuscripts.
