It's from the Snowpiercer TV show. I can't say I really recommend the show, because past S1 it's not great and S4 is so bad that I've disowned it, but I love it a lot and it's consumed my entire fucking brain, so like. On Only Lovers Left Alive

(Warning: Mentions of Suicide and Spoilers)

A few days ago I watched “Only Lovers Left Alive”, a movie that’s been on my To Watch list since it came out when I was a young teen. The wait was worth it(besides lil me wouldn't have found the comedy part of it lol). The movie stars a couple of my favorite actors(Hello fellow Loki, Snowpiercer and Constantine fans). The story is of the kind you’d recount to a friend you hadn’t seen in some years. A story without a steep climax or explosive ending. A story that when you try and tell it to someone else seems boring though you were hooked. 

I enjoyed the way the director and writer, Jim Jarmusch,(and now I’d like to watch all of his films) used these characters to critique humanity from an outside perspective. “Zombies” being the bane of our male lead’s existence but you learn this is not without him trying to better what he could. Adam is a lover of music and science and has interacted with and assisted many scientists and musicians throughout history. Due to this he laments what’s happened to them. Adam hates how the zombies treated his mentees when they were alive and how their work is still treated today. Humans to Adam don’t seem to have any individuality or curiosity left. They’ve proven it time and time again. I believe it’s part of what drives him to consider ending his own life. On top of all of that, as a musician who is uninterested in fame or money, Adam struggles with containing his music to his desired audiences. He doesn’t seek out critique, inspiration or growth in part because he doubts there’s any to be gained from humanity.

Eve is his opposite: personable, funny, and logical. She is also far more optimistic and sees the human race in a more realistic light, even finding confidants among them. Eve understands Adam and they share a deep mutual love, demonstrated by his willingness to teach her and her love of listening to him. Being the source of much of the humor in the movie, she also manages to act as a foil character uncovering Adam’s suicidal plot and bringing other characters closer to her shut-in husband. Eve eventually flips the mood of the movie on its head. That is until the climax where her sister, Ava, intrudes on their love nest and invokes the image of a young child thrust upon a couple. (With my favorite scene being when Ava woke them up like a toddler jumping in their bed. She was then convinced to leave by a patient Eve and then proceeded to turn the T.V. to something loud and obnoxious.)

Part of the use of Ava's character is to act as another vehicle for the differences between Adam and Eve and how well they work together. Eve is patient and soothing where Adam is quick to irritation and aggressive when reacting to Ava’s behavior. In the end, they stand together to kick Ava out when she jeopardizes them all by drinking Ian, a helper of Adam’s, dry.  My favorite part is how this all parallels the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Adam is lonely, Eve comes onto the scene, he shows her around, a tempter(Ava) Eve is partial to comes into their home and then makes it unlivable, in part due to Eve’s actions(assisting Ava in convincing Adam to take them out). Then they are forced to wander through Tangier and nearly starve. All's well that ends well though and they find something to drink in the end.

Hello anon! Sorry for the late replies as I just got back from a trip.

There is a reason why I will continue to put subtitles on the videos I clip. Said reason was to help people who struggle to listen to the audio of said videos, some may have listening disabilities that might hinder them from listening to the things that George shared with fellow grussell sprouts (I'm sorry if I worded anything disrespectfully here). I just genuinely want to help fellow grussell sprouts friends. Aside from that, it's to help people who are not well-versed in English to be able to understand George's words better (not all of us has english as our first language, to add the accent difference often makes it hard for things to be understood) and basically I chose to add the subtitles to also avoid any misconceptions or misunderstandings of what George said. Main point? It was to provide help to people who needed it and additional understanding.

If you were inconvenient by the subtitles, I always link the OG video to my posts. If I forgot to do so, please do not hesitate to reach out to me and remind me (qrt/comment/askbox/direct message/etc) so you can watch it on your own.

But I hope one day you'll warm up to the concept of subtitles itself as I don't put them all over the videos to disrupt the scene and ruin the visuals. There's this favorite quote of mine from the movie director of Parasite (2019) and Snowpiercer (2013), Bong Joonho. While this subtitle is about movies, I think it also applies in the similar way.

Can I also say Chris kinda has the worst luck as an actor? How could it be that every film he worked on during the Marvel years outside of the MCU didn’t have both critical and commercial success (they either had one or the other). I think he was trying to establish a name for himself outside of Marvel with great directors I might add but all of them didn’t find audiences back then that I think would have been really successful now. If Sunshine, Scott Pilgrim, or Snowpiercer came out now, there’s little doubt in my mind they wouldn’t have been wildly successful. I agree that the Marvel hype of course overshadows everything else but still. It’s wild to me. Plus, I think that adds to the truth behind the Tarantino quote that the Marvel actor isn’t the movie star and Chris himself even agreed with it.

(Side note: Could it be possible that most of the industry people in Hollywood think Chris has too much money or would ask for too much money for a role because of Marvel and therefore auteur projects without much of a budget for actors don’t get sent to him?)

Snowpiercer, for all intents and purposes, was an AMAZING film. But Harvey Weinstein was a dick and that’s why it did so poorly here in the states. 🧜🏻‍♀️

mmm in terms of most laughs over time id say monty python and the holy grail. i think there was a period when it was quoted all the time and it began to feel tired, but before that i felt like the jokes never got stale
