Asha & Starboy

Since it’s February and Valentine Day is coming, I give you: The Cutest Couple that Never Was!

I know I said in a previous post that Wish (2023) disappointed me, BUT-

The concept had so much potential; the King and Queen being both evil, Asha having powers from the start and of course, STARBOY! I just love that concept of a playful magical being that could also potentially be a cute love interest to Asha, but they can’t be together because he must go back to the sky at the end or something (literal star-crossed lovers). So since Disney didn’t deliver, I did it myself.

Details below:

I sculpted their faces with Fimo and for the bodies, I used a snapstar doll body for Asha and a cheap modified BJD doll for Starboy (he was too tall, so I had to saw the legs shorter and give him monster high hands), I also slightly modified Asha’s design and dress (I wanted it more flowy), and while I did took inspiration from the concept arts for Starboy, I decided to design my own outfit for him, something that resemble more a shiny jester outfit, given he was supposed to be a joyous character (we were robbed, seriously).

fun fact: those wish balls are actually painted bouncing balls.

Birthday presents for myself 😋

I was very lucky with finding clearance/deadstock stuff this summer and kept the dolls I bought boxed until my birthday today! (24.09)

Went through my doll clothes yesterday to find something other than the original Snapstar outfit to put on her.

More doll mail! Because we still haven't reached the bottom of that box yet XD Here we have SnapStars Dawn, Rainbow Boxy Girl Violet, and AZIAM Niyama. These three are all refugees from @dollsahoy's 'parts' box, as she originally intended to use them for rebodying other heads, but after having them for awhile without find the right project for them, she thought I might appreciate them as-is, with their original heads intact (I think I got that right? Please correct me if my memory is faulty). Anyway, she couldn't have been more right. You all know I love obscure and unusual dolls, and these girls certainly fit the bill in that regard; but they also fit in strangely well with some of the other dolls already in my collection! I'll be giving each of them a separate post to discuss those similarities in more detail.

Oh one other thing--

Or two, rather. Andrea also included these mannequins/dress forms, which I don't think quite warrant their own post, but I didn't want to leave them out entirely ;p At some point I'll figure out a fun way to display these with the Hottiez Dollequins.

created this reference pic because i like bodytype/height variety and because i want to eventually make some gnome/halflings characters. other dolls that are short but aren’t toddlers/small kids i know of but don’t have are mattel cave club and mga lol tweens.

other notes: mattel spirit dolls are compatible with barbie extra minis out of the box and they even might have matching skintones. lol omg have their cartoony instagram baddie bodytype but they look most similar in size to curvy failfix doll (afaik failfix have different bodytypes too and maybe one is even a little bit taller?). and umm sorry abt two dolls being faceless, i haven’t got around to repainting them (again).

Aww. Y’all. I’m still here. Been hanging out in the background for a few years.

I’m in a mad scramble to get a grip back on life and relocated these darlings in the frantic cleaning. It’s heartwarming to see them again after so many years. There’s a 10+ gal bin of them in our basement that could use some love too…

After the disaster that 2023 was, I hope to get back to some of my old passions. Happy new year and best of luck finding all the dolls you want! <3

Snapstar + Liv

So at first glance these girls don't appear to have much in common other than inset eyes...until you take off their wigs. Then all of a sudden things begin to look strangely familiar--

As far as we know there is no direct dolly lineage between these two brands. Liv dolls were produced by Spin Master between 2009 and 2012. the #Snapstar line was released by the brand Yulu in 2019 and faded into obscurity soon after. I suspect the Snapstar design was heavily 'inspired by' the former brand, but that's just pure speculation. Either way it's going to be fun to display them together.
