lion primary + snake secondary (bird model)
Hey, I was hoping you'd be willing to help me out with my primary! I'm sure of my secondary, (snake) but I'm stuck between lion and bird for my primary. When I was a kid, I was the sort of kid who was just effortlessly good at school; so I never really cared about grades or doing good in school because I always did, so there was no need to worry. I honestly don't remember caring about much of anything other than being well liked by my classmates for being the class topper and childish stuff like that.
This is definitely more of a a young, Glory Hound Lion than a young Black-and-White Bird. Lots of times your causes as a young Lion will not be the most... complex things in the world. (That's extremely relatable.)
When I got older and more mature, I still didn't really care much about school, still sort of because I was never really in danger of failing, but also because I'd decided that school was a very ineffective and stupid way to teach kids, which also made me lose all motivation to try for all of middle school and a good chunk of high school.
You are not wrong. The science behind how memory/learning works is pretty young, and (depending on where/when you went to school...) chances are you were hit with a lot of the memorization/repetition based learning techniques which were a big deal in the 1950s... but which just become more arbitrary and meaningless, as computer usage gets more and more widespread.
That said, I bet you never got a chance to work on your executive functioning skills, because you didn't need to, because school was so easy, and you were maybe a little too smart for your own good. :)
A decent time into high school, I realized that I'd have to get good grades in final exams, if only so I'd get into a good college and stuff like that, but it still took me months and months to convince myself to study.
I spy some kind of executive functioning block, possible neurodivergence creeping in.
That seems really lion to me - unable to care about something I consider to be useless. But, the way I'd convinced myself is to study regularly for learning's sake - even if my sources were kinda dumb, information is information and if I wanted to succeed in life I needed to study this, so I might as well try to enjoy it and study, at least for the bragging rights of being class topper again. And that sounds really Bird.
What we have here sounds like a Lion primary and a Bird secondary (or Bird secondary model - very common) working together. What do we want (that's your primary): bragging rights, to succeed in life. Love it, very in keeping with your Lion primary.
But how are you going to do this? (that's your secondary.) Statements like "information is information," that's extremely Bird secondary. You need to pull in a lot of info in a short period of time, that's how Birds solve problems, and they absolutely enjoy it. What it seems like is you either are a bird secondary, or you built a Bird secondary as a coping mechanism.
My family could be influencing my decision- and wouldn't that be like a bird, to take in information from external sources? - A good chunk of my desire to not fail is because my family has a lot of expectations, because they know that I'm capable of doing really well if I set my mind to it.
A Lion primary is definitely the most likely to go - 'oh they don't like what I'm doing? Screw 'em.' But we could be dealing with a Lion primary that's just a little burned, maybe a Paragon Lion that looks really Badger, maybe you're a *Snake* primary and we've got a little Snake primary hedonism going on.
But what I think is happening is just that you've got a Lion primary. In this litlte bit, you lead with your own desire to get good grades, then followed that emotional response up with some reasoning: it would please my family. The fact that it went 'emotional response' first and 'reasons to explain/justify emotional response' second - that's Lion.
My mom especially, my dad's more casual about schooling, as long as I passed and had decent marks, he never cared much, but my mom always said how she expected me to get A+, above 95 marks, etc etc. But I never really let her opinion affect me much
Oooh yeah, that's not something you're going to hear from a young Badger. And if you were a young Bird, I would definitely have expected a line explaining why your Dad is a more credible source than your mom in this instance.
grades never mattered that much to me, aside from the cool factor, it's not right to judge someone stupid for getting bad grades, and anyways grades aren't a measure of someone's intelligence. And that seems Lion.
I agree. And here again, you're presenting information emotion first, then explanation. First - 'it's not right to judge someone for getting bad grades.' Strong emotional response right out of the gate. That 'It's wrong because it just is' thing is something Lions say that drive Birds crazy. Then you follow that up with an "anyways..." and come in with some reasoning.
(I agree with you, by the way. Good vs Bad grades are not a great measure of intelligence. I cannot tell you how many people I've met who understand the topic like you wouldn't believe, but who are bad test takers. And the inverse, people who don't really get it, but have enough meta-knowledge to fill out a test sheet well. And that's only the tip of the iceberg.)
I don't know if I'm a Lion who rules-lawyered myself into caring about school out of practicality concerning the future; or a Bird who temporarily burned after being disillusioned with school and ended up unburning thanks to familial pressure.
I think you're a Lion who found yourself caring more about school as you got closer to university (like I bet you're actively looking forward to going to university, right?) And then you built yourself a Bird secondary model to get what you needed to get done, done.

I know I've messed up in some of my sorting posts (definitely messed up a bit in the Anastasia one I think) but there's no way on earth you can convince me that Poseidon chased Odysseus across the ocean and sank all his other ships just to prove a point about ideals and not because of revenge. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

i have not been active on this blog in a While and being very normal about my old hyperfixation lorien legacies, which has an absolute fuckload of characters to sort, has finally gotten me to crawl out of my hole.
[spoilers ahead for both lorien legacies and its sequel series!]
there is a LOT of ground to cover here, and i am mostly going to limit myself to sorting characters and themes from the first series, but my initial notes are:
probably one of the biggest overarching themes of the series is toxic birdsec, and the harm it can do to every aspect of a society or a person's life--on both a systematic level and an individual one--right down to their basic humanity. by extension it also goes into similarly fucked up lion and bird primary used as weapons and tools of abuse, and how they interplay with each other.
a large part of this stems from setrรกkus ra being The Worst Fucking Lion Bird Ever to Live, lmao. he's an interesting example of birdsec interplaying with cannibal badger, and also of a lion bird who's a cheetah in that he uses systems as tools to manipulate people instead of actually believing them. he hands out toxic systems like candy while peppering them with outright lies, and blithely admits that even the one that he's put centuries into building--mogadorian progress, and the great book--is at its heart just a ruse to run his cult on. the truth he pretends to worship and champion isn't external, objective truth--it's an extension of him. he is the ultimate truth. and the only truth he believes in is his cause, which is that he has the right and ability to own, make use of, and do whatever he sees fit with everything in existence. everyone and everything that could possibly be a shiny or a tool belongs to him.
one of the other overarching themes is toxic badger primary and secondary--cannibal badgering AHOY--as well as toxic lion primary, and it is a great deal less intentional than the bird cautionary tale part lmao
five is a bird snake with deeply toxic lion primary and bird secondary models, one of which he picked up after getting involved with a cult, and one of which he's had since his abusive birdsec guardian started amputating his masks by trying to apply actor bird to them. :') his brand of birdsplode and snakeburn make him horribly, horribly vulnerable to the cult, especially combined with focused, one-on-one gaslighting and manipulation from setrรกkus himself, and he has to burn his bird right to a crisp to break away from it. i am very biased and i have so much to say about my boy, but i plan to go in depth about this later
there are a LOT of lionsecs among the loric garde kids. the only surviving ones who aren't lionsecs are marina's badger and five's snake (the latter of which is heavily villainized, lol); number one is either a lionsec or a snakesec, maggie is either a birdsec or a badgersec, and we don't really see enough of hannu to be sure, but my guess is badgersec. in context, whatever these books are saying here i am not sure i like it lmao
this stands in contrast to the non-garde allies, minus adam, who end up being Part of the Gang. sam and lexa are birdsecs, and sarah and malcolm are both badgersecs.
speaking of adam, he is a lion snake with a cool, calculated double bird performance/model, who has been waiting all his life for a chance to go Absolutely Feral. there are a lot of ways in which he's a real shithead, which track given his life and circumstances up to then but are also real ๐Ÿ˜ฌ sometimes, but like, good for him. go ape shitt, kid
nine is an awful, AWFUL double lion who models/performs the worst parts of badger primary; he also uses lionsec stereotypes and methods to misdirect people, so that he can hurt, gaslight, prey on, and abuse them. it's genuinely interesting how he does it, and i could go on for a long time about it, but it's also Infuriating because the authors really want you to love him for being a ~charming jerk with a heart of gold,~ so that is for another post. in the sequel series he also picks up a nasty posthumous birdsec model from sandor to gleefully torture children with so lmfao
there seem to be a lot of birdsecs and badgersecs among the mentor cรชpans, which tracks, because, well, mentors. interestingly, it seems to be a pattern so far that the birdsec mentors are either some of the most deeply abusive among them (see: rey, sandor, and ethan even though he's an unofficial cรชpan), or the most decent parents of them under the circumstances (see: katarina).
john is a hognose (badgery snake) 'i live here' snake lion, and a VERY loud one. he's set on saving the world mainly a) in order to save his People, or b) because it's what they would want. he also believes STRONGLY in snake values as applied to other people, and absolutely cannot grok that anyone would feel differently--he holds back on killing a major enemy because he's worried about killing a friendly acquaintance's Person--and honestly he can be kind of a huge dick about it lmao. he burns HARD at the end of the first series when sarah dies; in the second, he copes by making an entire community into his circle and no longer gives a shit about the rest of the world outside it, including groups who are in similar if not worse circumstances than his community. Horrific War Crimes Ensue!
rex is an everyone double badger and i love him so much. i love him So Much. he is a wonderful example of how to write a morally dubious character whose dodgy qualities interest me instead of making me grit my teeth and Tolerate Them. his arc could have fixed So Much of the Ending's Bullshit and i will be forever mad that they dumped it in the trash
there is more, oh my god there's so much more, this series has SO many characters in it, but this is a start thank you for coming to my ted talk

I'm going to sort my family from most recently dead to furthest.
Grandma - Badger Snake. I thought maybe she was a double Badger, but I think she modeled Badger sec because it was expected of her, but she was traditional and involved in her church community, so Badger primary. I say she was a Snake secondary due to her general mischeviousness, go with the flow attitude, and doing things like once tricking me into getting a flu shot by paying for two.
Mom - Double Bird or Bird Badger. Would do a deep dive on any subject she found interesting and once she decided that something was true, good luck changing her mind. She could possibly have been a Badger sec due to building communities wherever she went. Used to clash with her a fair amount, but she also could have been a burnt Lion primary.
Grandpa - This one is the hardest due to him being gone for so long, but he could be the double Badger out of the bunch. Also community oriented.

"The prominence of female divinity in Minoan culture might well have reflected the prominence of Minoan women in daily life. In Shang dynasty China, the authority of goddesses such as the Eastern and Western Mothers was echoed to some degree by the authority of women in elite society and even the army. Fu Jing and Fu Hao, wives of King Wu Ding, led men into battle before being honoured in death with monumental tombs containing the victims of human sacrifice, battle axes, knives and arrowheads. In Egypt, many of the images of Hatshepsut were destroyed or defaced after her death when her name was removed from the official list of rulers by her male successors, who sought to claim direct descent from her husband. It is possible that images of powerful Minoan women were subject to similar mistreatment.
While there is no evidence that Minoan women ruled in the same manner as Hatshepsut, or joined battle like the women of Shang China, the sheer number of artworks depicting them centrally placed and on a larger scale than men has prompted some historians to speculate that Minoan society was matriarchal or matrilineal. โ€˜Neopalatial Crete,โ€™ writes one scholar, โ€˜presents the best candidate for a matriarchy โ€“ if one ever existed.โ€™ There is nothing to say that the position of Minoan women was in any way secondary to that of men.ย
Minoan women were certainly not confined to the weaving room. Sculptures show them playing lyres, flutes and zithers, sashaying in flounced chevron-patterned skirts and raising their arms in the air in ecstasy. In the โ€˜Grandstand Frescoโ€™ from Knossos the women are more carefully delineated in paint than the men. Each woman has her own identity, her own style. The women appear to occupy the main rooms of the palace while the men congregate as an anonymous mass beyond. Women depicted seated โ€“ a sign of divinity or authority โ€“ are often being approached by men or animals. A highly enigmatic fresco at Thera (Santorini), for example, features a woman wearing large hoop earrings, a snake in her hair, and a neck-chain of ducks, sitting on a dais with a griffin beside her while a blue monkey pays her court.
ย On a gold ring, a female deity, we may presume, is seated beneath a tree, where she receives flowers from two women. A smaller figure of a man with a double-headed axe over his head hovers between them.ย  By depicting the man beneath the axe, and on a smaller scale than the women, the engraver of the ring perhaps hoped to convey that he was a divine vision, almost a thought-bubble, originating in one of the female worshipperโ€™s heads. Trees, as Arthur Evans recognised, were sacred in Minoan culture, and were perhaps believed to be capable of inspiring divine visions in those who honoured them. Such artworks contribute to the picture of Minoan women exerting considerable religious authority in the palace complexes and society more widely.ย
Minoan women also played a crucial role in ritual. The early Minoans sometimes interred their dead twice by exhuming the bones of their family members and resettling them later in jars. The more usual custom, however, was to bury the dead in chamber tombs or stone beehive-shaped โ€˜tholosโ€™ tombs, clay sarcophagi or, in the case of infants, under the floorboards of the home. The colourful paintings on a rare limestone sarcophagus from Hagia Triada, circa 1400 bc, show three men carrying young animals and a model boat to the deceased, who stands in front of his tomb, ready to receive his provisions for the afterlife. There are also three women present, the first of whom pours a libation into a cauldron placed between two upright axes mounted by birds; the second carries further vessels; the third โ€“ darker skinned like the men and thus possibly of lower social status โ€“ has a lyre. On the other side of the sarcophagus the women assist in the sacrifice of a bull on an altar. Other wall paintings show women involved in rituals of their own involving blood.ย  A fresco from Akrotiri features a group of women, one of whom sits beside a sunken room or โ€˜lustral basinโ€™ with a bleeding foot. A tree also bleeds. It is possible that lustral basins were used for purification by women during or after menstruation."

Sorting Hat Chats - The Malfoys
Since the Malfoys have been a bit of a hot topic lately, I decided to give them their sorting post similar to what I did with the Weasleys...3 years ago??? Where does the time go??
Anyway, this is an explanation of the system I am using by @wisteria-lodge.
Tumblr media
LUCIUS MALFOY is blatantly a Badger secondary. His methods are to make donations to people, goad Arthur Weasley into a fight so he can slip Ginny the diary, he uses blackmail against the other members of the Board of Governors, calling in favors, and when in the hall of prophecies with Harry and his gang his strategy is to talk him into giving the prophecy over. It's what makes him so effective in the first five books, but is also why once everyone knows the truth about him he is in a constant state of free fall.
As for his primary, I think it's fairly obvious that he's a Snake. He can look like a Badger, dehumanizing muggleborns and joining the Death Eaters, but that's a performance. When the chips are down, what Lucius really cares about himself, his wife, and his son. Snake Lucius is willing to get rid of every association to the Death Eaters he had, and in the Second Wizarding War is not enjoying himself at ALL. He's also clearly got that Snake hedonism to him.
NARCISSA MALFOY nรฉe BLACK is an equally blatant Snake primary, although she doesn't appear to even play the part of a Badger. Everything to her is her son and her husband (and her husband takes a backseat to her son usually). Narcissa doesn't even appear to like Bellatrix all that much anymore since Bella is a threat to her family. Down to the end her motivation is always to keep Draco safe, damn the consequences.
As for her secondary, since she's such a minor character you can probably make an argument for any of them. But I personally think she's a Snake secondary, making her a Double Snake. This is a woman who lies to Voldemort's face and doesn't get caught. Who is willing to go behind his back and make back-alley deals with someone like Snape.
I've sorted DRACO MALFOY once before with @awinterrain which you can read right here, but I would like to reiterate it and expand on it.
Draco may be the epitome of Slytherin in the books, and he may hate Hufflepuffs and think of them as "duffers," but this boy is Double Badger down to his bones. This is a boy who cares deeply about communities. He defines himself by them, first as a Malfoy, then as a Slytherin, then as a Seeker on the quidditch team, then as part of the Inquisitorial Squad, then as a death eater (which he doesn't care for). I think at the beginning of the series he's a good case for an Immature Badger primary, where he just IS the group he's into and nothing outside of this.
His Badger primary can look very insular and Snake-like, partially because pureblood culture alienates everyone outside of it, and partially because his family is so Snakey that it colors the look of his Badger primary. Idk if I would even call it a performance or a model, it's more like a flavor.
But he does start to look like a Snake primary in his Sixth Year, where he's single-mindedly focused on saving his family. That's because in Sixth Year he burns after joining the Death Eaters. And it's honestly really sad, but it's because Draco has realized his communities are toxic and not good for him. The Death Eaters aren't good, they're the reason his father is in prison and his mother is in danger. This is the year where he really stops engaging with his peers and is sort of just coasting on his former reputation.
But that Badger shine is still there, and it's in the fact that Draco Malfoy has to kill Dumbledore and cannot do it. A true Snake Draco Malfoy would probably have gone through with it, even if it he felt bad about it. Badger Draco, who spent books 1-5 shit talking Dumbledore at any opportunity, cannot do it. I think it's because 1. He isn't ready for casual murder, and 2. I think Dumbledore for Draco represents one more community that he identifies with-Hogwarts. And clearly he does care about Hogwarts (I don't think the Room of Requirement would reveal itself to him if he did).
As for his secondary, Draco is his father in miniature. Draco is a tattle tail, he has bodyguards that follow him around, he usually goads Harry into confrontations so Harry gets into trouble and Draco can have plausible deniability. What's most interesting to me though is Draco's proclivity for elaborate smear campaigns. The "Potter Stinks" badges are HIS work as is the "Weasley is Our King" song, which is very...mean badgery. Like this is his community building with Slytherin (arguably all of Hogwarts with the badges), and using his powers to bully Harry. It's funny, despite everything. He does perform Snake though, to make everything look quicker or look like his mother.
Even his methods when he has to kill Dumbledore are Badger powered. Working on the Vanishing Cabinet all year, poisoning Professor Slughorn's mead he intended to give Dumbledore, and charming Rosmerta to imperious Katie Bell. But, he still has that influence from his mom where he can lie to someone's face (though not as convincingly).
I think Draco looks at his father's Badger performance, and thus thinks they house match. And it explains why he is so wary of his father after the Death Eater reveal, since Draco has realized he does not enjoy that sort of Badger primary.
As a bonus I decided to sort BELLATRIX LESTRANGE nรฉe BLACK as well. Since for some reason the movies always advertised her as part of the Malfoys. No doubt about it she is a Lion secondary. I don't think Bellatrix has every learned the meaning of the word subtle. She never lies in the series, just blasts the truth out whenever, and is always an attack first think never character.
As for her primary, can she be anything other than exploded snake primary? Her everything is Voldemort. She doesn't really care for anyone outside of him, with the exception of Narcissa, who stopped liking Bellatrix when she became a danger to her son. I think at one point she had a Badger performance or model that allowed her to willingly marry someone like Rodolphus who she doesn't appear to like, but by the time she's going to Azkaban she doesn't care. It's honestly such a Black Family sorting. Sirius was a Snake Lion as well, and the culture of the "Noble and Most Ancient House of Black" seems to just be Snake coded in general.
So...
Lucius Malfoy - Snake primary, Badger performance/Badger secondary
Narcissa Malfoy nee Black - Snake primary/Snake secondary
Draco Malfoy - Badger primary, Immature at the start, burns in his Sixth Year, has a Snake performance or flavor/Badger secondary, Snake performance
Bonus:
Bellatrix Lestrange nee Black - Exploded Snake primary, Badger performance/model long discarded/Lion secondary
Sirius Black - Snake primary/Lion secondary

Shapeshifter Anatomy
shapeshifter is a broad category, covering any fictional creature or peoples that can alter the shape of their body. some can shift into pretty much any animal, like animorphs or DnD druids. some are shapeshifters against their will, like werewolves. I'll be covering the anatomical possibilities for shapeshifters with a limited ability to change their shape, more like werewolves.
the anatomy required to change one's form mostly involves keeping a lot of body parts "hidden" until they're brought out to use. there are a lot of animals that can do this! cats have retractable claws, eels have a secondary jaw in their throats, many snakes have large fangs that fold back in the mouth. etc.
hair and feathers are also capable of changing the shape of a creature by the way they move, like the quills of a porcupine or the display feathers of many birds of paradise. this is a much less flexible sort of shapeshifting, but it's a good option for intimidation and courting displays or temporary disguise.
to keep this post simple, I'm just going to focus on a humanoid with a singular monstrous form, but these concepts could be used for a lot of different creatures! though I haven't fully determined how to make someone go from mostly hairless to suddenly very furry. Maybe becoming a werewolf just gives you a lot more body hair growth and it puffs up during the transformation.
Tumblr media
(image description: compiled sketches of different animal anatomy. in the top left corner, there are colored diagrams showing the different parts of a human skull and a wolf skull. in the top left, a diagram showing how cat claws retract and bend forward. on the bottom, sketches of moray eel and viper skulls, showing the eel's secondary jaw and the viper's folding fangs. end description.)
It took a while but i managed to find an ask i answered a while back about giving humanoids retractable claws like cats have. so that's at least one part of possible shapeshifter anatomy covered! the tldr is this: retractable claws actually require the first joint of the finger or toe to be folded backwards, and then the claw comes out when that joint flexes forward. it does make the fingers and toes shorter and more bulky at the front, but that's fine.
here's a look at just the skull and upper torso of a potential were-creature or monstrous humanoid.
Tumblr media
(image description: colored sketches of a humanoid skeleton with a retractable fang on both the upper and lower jaws, as well as an extra joint on the lower jaw, and neck vertebrae that sit more curved in the first sketch and straighten out to a longer neck in the second sketch. end description.)
this could use more polish before it's really ready to add the fleshy parts on top, and they wouldn't quite look fully human on the outside. If you want to take something like this even further, you can alter the entire skull to be full of small moving joints, like how so many fish are able to fold up their jaws and then shoot them forward like a tube. or the sarcastic fringehead, a fish that can unfold its jaw as a method of intimidation.
youtube
(video description: a 3d model of a carp's jaw, showing how it's made of multiple parts that can all move and extend the mouth. end description.)
Tumblr media
(image description: two photos of a sarcastic fringehead. the top photo shows this fish at rest, with its jaw frame folded backward along its face. the bottom image shows this fish with its jaw fully extended, revealing a very wide panel of brightly colored flesh on either side of the mouth. end description.)
facial changes like this are probably the most difficult part of making the anatomy for a shapeshifter. but the more moving parts their face has, the more variety of face shape you get! moving to the rest of the body though, let's consider how an upright human figure could shift into a quadrupedal form with digitigrade legs, since werewolves are probably among the more common creatures all this advice is useful for.
Tumblr media
(image description: a simplified human skeleton and wolf skeleton next to each other, with an arrow pointing from the human to the wolf. end description)
pretty much all vertebrates have things in common when it comes to the form of their skeletons. the general location of each limb and the ribs and pelvis are always similar. but their exact size and shape varies from animal to animal. so you can't really make a normal human skeleton turn into a normal wolf skeleton. but you can make a weird human skeleton that doubles as a weird wolf skeleton.
Tumblr media
(image description: same as above, but now the human shaped skeleton and the wolf shaped skeleton match each other, and the human shaped one is hiding its longer neck, spine, and tail by holding them with a far more curved shape while the wolf shaped skeleton holds them more straight. end description.)
okay they're not an exact match, but I tried. any humanoid being with a skeleton like this is not going to be able to fool anyone into thinking they're a normal human when they're naked. but with the right styling of clothes, a lot of the weird curves, hunched shoulders, and awkward feet problems can be hidden from view.
anything that gets more complicated than this will require extra bones and joints and muscles depending on what exactly you need your shapeshifter to do! a change in posture is a lot different than, say, being able to extend the length of their limbs or alter the shape of their ribcage by making it more narrow and protruding vs more flat and open.
I can't personally cover every single possibility! so you all will have to just use this post as a springboard and go explore more ideas yourself! I started with the idea of taking a human skeleton and altering it, but imagine what this would look like if the base form was entirely non-human! or if they were more of an invertebrate! extra arms can be folded to resemble the shape of a torso, for example. there are so many more options I'm sure I didn't even think of.
go put your mind to work and have fun!

Descendants Sortings
Mal
Mal is a burned Lion Primary. It isnโ€™t obvious at first, but the more her character developed over the course of the series, the more clear it became she is not a Snake -frankly, this girl would have been better off if she would have taken a more self-serving Snake mentality (uo, I know!) in the latter movies- and no Bird, as she shows none of the signs. I did debate whether she might be a Badger primary or no, but both her โ€˜I wantโ€™ songs (If Only and My once upon a time) show she is a burned Lion who is desperate to unburn, but well, her internal compass has been skewed by being raised by Maleficent: โ€œI can't decide/ What's wrong, what's right/ Which way should I go?โ€/โ€œYou had a cause to serve, but did you serve it?โ€
Mal really really needs a Cause to work for. In Descendants 1, her Cause is making her mother proud by stealing the wand. In Descendants 2, her new Cause is to be the perfect lady of the court and girlfriend for Ben. And she feels like sheโ€™s failing miserably at it, which is why she lives for the Isle. This and the fact that Mal is pretty much facing an identity crisis here and feels like her entire life is being caged by the life everyone else is planning for her. Both nightmarish situations for a Lion who isnโ€™t entirely unburned yet. In the third movie, Malโ€™s Cause is to be a good queen for Auradon, no matter the price. I personally find Malโ€™s arc very compelling and intriguing as I think we rarely see a protagonist who is loved by the narrative supporting a point of view the narrative disagrees with, but still be treated with empathy by it.
Her Secondary is even more interesting to me cause before rewatching, I would have never thought she is a Bird Sec, but yet it is so plain! Mal uses magic as a very efficient tool despite never being formally taught. She just gets handed a book and is told to figure it out on the fly. And she does it spectacularly โ€ฆ by paying attention to the instructions like with the love potion. Sheโ€™s also the planner of the group, some of the plans being better than others (drugging Ben, giving Uma the fake wand etc.). And last, but not least: Mal is an information gatherer. One seemingly insignificant scene that showcases a great lot about Mal is in the car in the first movie, when she asked which button opens the barrier. They almost died, witnessed magic for the first time and are leaving their homes, yet this is on her mind.
Evie
Evie is the textbook Badger Secondary. She is defined by her sewing and hard work. The girl is so good at it, she manages to buy her own castle with the money! I do think she has a Snake Secondary Model in order to play the role of The Temptress that was forced on her.
I had a harder time figuring out the primary, but one thing is clear from the start: Evie is a Loyalist. Sheโ€™s the one who is more or less keeping the group together and she sometimes clashes a little bit with Mal, as Loyalists donโ€™t see the bigger picture the way Idealists do, which in Evieโ€™s case, is a very good thing. I contemplated Badger, but Iโ€™m pretty sure sheโ€™s a Snake actually. Evie may be one of the biggest advocates for the Isle kids, but she only becomes one after she says Dizzy again. In D2, Evie is willing to go to the Isle to save Mal even though sheโ€™s afraid she might get stuck there. And yet she still volunteers to stay with Mal there, because Mal is her best friend. Evie is a Snake through and through and I think itโ€™s very interesting how in the third movie, which shows the darker side of Lion primaries, itโ€™s Snake!Evie (and Uma) that are framed as being right.

Jay has a Snake secondary he uses to steal and charm people. And sometimes to exploit loopholes eg. making Lonnie captain in the second movie. He is a Lion Primary, of the Glory Hound variety in the first movie. His entire arc there is to learn how to work inside a team.
Carlos de Vill
Carlos is also an immature primary, but unlike Jay, he is a Hedonistic Snake. When they first arrive in Auradon, heโ€™s mostly interested in eating chocolate and playing video games. Heโ€™s also the one most annoyed later on by Evie and Mal always going off to chat amongst themselves leaving him and Jay out of the loop. Bird secondary: he is a tech genius and knowledge gatherer (see how he tries to see if his clapping can make the statue change in D1).
King Ben
Letโ€™s make one thing clear, D1!Ben is smart. And a troll (see him introducing Mal to his parents or how he tells Mal he knew about the love potion). He is framed as the Big Damn Hero in both the first and the second movie, which of course made me think he had one of the โ€˜heroicโ€™ primaries: Badger or Lion. I settled on Lion, as it is incredibly easy for him to go against the grain. Something not a lot of people can say in this franchise. Heโ€™s also extremely concerned with upholding his role as a good king. He forgives Mal for the love potion because she risks her life to save him, which convinces him she is not an evil person. Ben has very firm convictions. He is the only one who stands up for the VKs at Family Day despite being the one with an actual reason to hate them.
He definitely has a Fluid Secondary, as a huge part of his charm is the fact that he tries to make himself liked. But heโ€™s also a hard worker who disapproves heavily of taking shortcuts (see his fight with Mal over her using magic for everything) which made me go with Badger.
Uma
Uma is a classic (exploded) Snake primary. It seems to be all about Mal in D2. Sheโ€™s enraged when Mal says sheโ€™s never given Uma a thought since she left. Ben offers her to come to Auradon and be part of a solution for saving other VKs. But Uma refuses. And I think itโ€™s both because she wants to do things her way, but also because Uma is not exactly looking at the bigger picture here the way Ben is. โ€˜You donโ€™t get to win everytime.โ€™ These are her words to Mal when she realizes she had been tricked with a fake wand. Her secondary is a little trickier but Iโ€™m going with Bird because, hereโ€™s the thing, Uma is Malโ€™s mirror. Ben clocks it almost immediately: โ€œSheโ€™s an angry girl with a bad plan. Not so different from you when you first came to Auradon.โ€ Mal also constantly shows that she understands Uma and her methods better than anyone. Uma even uses the same plan as Mal when she uses the love spell on Ben. These girls are two sides of the same coin. (A bit of a side note, but Iโ€™m really curious how they are going to handle Uma as the Principal of Auradon Prep in D4. The clips weโ€™ve seen so far make me really optimistic. Plus, since Iโ€™ve been hopelessly contaminated by TVD and never cured, Uma as principal reminded me of Caroline as headmistress in Legacies and yeah, Iโ€™m very optimistic this means good things for Uma xDD).
Li Lonnie
Lion Secondary as she is extremely honest and straightforward: โ€œI know you hate us. And you are evil. But Iโ€™ve got money.โ€ she says when she wants Mal to give her a new haircut. You donโ€™t really get more Lion than that. Her primary was harder but from the first movie she looked to me like an Idealist with the way she saw the world: โ€œEven villains love their kids.โ€ Iโ€™m thinking Lion as in D2, she clearly goes to the Isle to prove herself by saving the king. Sounds familiar? Well, Lion primary Mulan did the same.
Princess Audrey
Audrey is another Lion Secondary girl in Auradon. Seriously this girlโ€™s attempts at manipulation, make Mal look subtle: โ€œMake me your queen and Iโ€™ll wake everybody up.โ€ Villain!Audrey was a hammer: all raw power, no finesse. D1!Audrey was no better either, see her very blunt introduction to the VKs.
Audrey is a Badger Primary, no doubt in my mind about it. Sheโ€™s very upset when the VKs disturb the Auradon Prep hierarchy and she exhibits some very typical Badger prejudices. โ€œAnd then everybody looks good. So where would I be?โ€ Audrey asks when she realizes Mal is giving the other girl make-overs, because she needs the social validation from being the prettiest princess there. In D3 it kills her that she did everything right and still someone else gets to be queen. I find it super interesting that Audrey asks Ben to โ€˜make [her] queenโ€™ when she definitely had the power to crown herself. You might think it was because she loved him, but Queen of Mean ,which is her โ€˜I wantโ€™ song, shows very clearly that it was never about Ben the person. What she wants is his validation, because Audrey was raised to believe that his opinion, as the King, is the most important one. Audrey isnโ€™t a Snake looking to have Ben for herself, a Lion seeking glory or a Bird trying to โ€˜rectifyโ€™ a system that is wrong; she is a Badger who is working within the confines of her society to achieve the status she wants.
Jane
Jane is so so Burned, I canโ€™t help but wonder what the hell was Fairy Godmother doing cause she sure as hell wasnโ€™t parenting her daughter the way she was supposed to. Jane is a Badger Primary who was ostracized by her only community so of course she latches onto Mal and Evie the first time they show her kindness. But D1 is a story about the failings of Badger primaries and the sheep mentality, so when she gains status and the VKs lose it following the events of Family Day, of course Jane aligns herself with the popular kids. Sheโ€™s not gonna risk becoming an outcast again. This is also the driving force behind her stealing the wand. Her secondary is also super burned, but Iโ€™m betting on Lion. Not only is she extremely honest and impulsive, but Lion seems to be the default secondary for Auradon girls. Which is super interesting since generally Lion is not the secondary framed as the most feminine, but here it is.
...I just realized Jane is the burned version of Audrey. Oh, the irony!
Harry Hook
Double Snake, most likely. He is loyal to Uma and Uma only. He also has the ~vibe of a Snake secondary.
Prince Chad Charming
Chad is such a Snake Primary with Audrey as his person. Heโ€™s also pretty hedonistic as seen in D2: Ben might be dying, but the most important think is well, could Chad be second in line for the throne? I was a bit unsure of his secondary, but I think it is Badger as the only two times heโ€™s successful (getting Evie in trouble for using the mirror, snapping at the VKs at Family Day) is when he involves other people.
Doug
Another Badger Primary. After Family Day, he gives into the peer pressure and shuns the VKs like everyone else. Maybe Badger Secondary too? Who knows, honestly this guy doesnโ€™t have that much of a personality. But he seems to be a Bookkeeper Badger with the way he and Evie understand each other.
Gil
Gil doesnโ€™t get to shine much, but I think he may be another Double Badger, and probably one of the sweetest Badger in the whole series. And considering he is the son of Gaston, I canโ€™t help but appreciate the irony.
Dizzy
Dizzy is framed as a mirror for Evie in the second movie: the girl who could be so much more, if only she got the chance. This makes me think the two house share and Dizzy is a Snake Badger too. Which honestly tracks with the way she works at the salon and seems to hold no grudge on Evie getting to achieve her dreams while she doesnโ€™t. Because Evie is her person, so of course Dizzy canโ€™t be mad at her.
Celia Facillier
Celia is a Snake Primary who wants the guarantee of being able to see her father after she comes to Auradon, because she loves her father. Itโ€™s that simple. Considering how she throws the ember in the water out of rage when she realizes Mal has been lying to her, Iโ€™m thinking Lion Secondary.
Tl; Dr
Mal - (burned) Lion/Bird
Evie - Snake/Badger with Snake model

Sorting More Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes with Sorting Hat Chats
Tumblr media
This post uses the Sorting Hat Chats system, originally created by @sortinghatchats. Itโ€™s a personality system, sort of like mbti or enneagram, except it developed right here in fandom for talking about and analysing fictional characters.
SHC is about two things โ€” your motive (called your primary) and your method (called your secondary). You can read a full explanation of the system over here (thanks, @wisteria-lodge!)
@the-phoenix-heart has already done a great post on Coriolanus and Lucy Gray over here, which I recommend you go and read if you havenโ€™t already! But since I have A Lot Of Thoughts about this book (and am currently writing a longfic about it thatโ€™s going to end up at 200k+, whoops) I figured Iโ€™d chat about the sortings of a few of its other characters.
Also, good lord this ended up long for a post just about three characters. Like, grab some snacks, grab a glass of water. The rest of this post is below the cut, to protect your dash. You ready? Letโ€™s go!
Sejanus Plinth โ€” Double Lion with a Badger primary model and possibly a singed secondary
Starting with his primary โ€” Sejanus is a good example of how Badgers and Paragon Lions (that is, Lions with Badger values) can be really difficult to distinguish from one another, especially in fiction. People are people and this means something to him, in a way it doesnโ€™t to either the Capitol or his father. Itโ€™s a Badger ideal, but itโ€™s not exclusive to Badgers. Although Sejanus is so incredibly heartfelt about it that I do think heโ€™s a Felt primary (Lion or Badger).
Thereโ€™s his angst about leaving Two, his community that he still considers an incredibly important part of his identity, that could be a Badger primary thingโ€ฆ but it also could be a human thing. And itโ€™s so tied up in his guilt for his fatherโ€™s actions during the war, and I think any primary could be hit hard by a parent producing munitions for a war against their own people. (And later using the money from said munitions to save their own skins and move away from home. Sejanus has reams of survivorโ€™s guilt, and thatโ€™s just a person thing.)
I could still be convinced either way, I think (and if anyone reading has strong opinions, Iโ€™m curious to hear your thoughts!). But Iโ€™ve come down on Lion for him, and thatโ€™s because of the way he talks so readily about systems and whatโ€™s right, not just the Badger thatโ€™s a person! stuff. When Dr. Gaul says itโ€™s the Capitolโ€™s right, to treat the Districts how they choose, he doesnโ€™t come back with theyโ€™re people, how could you? but meets her at her level, Idealist to Idealist. โ€œYouโ€™ve no right.โ€ Everyone is born with life and freedom, and โ€œtheyโ€™re not yours for the taking.โ€
Thereโ€™s also the way he lives for so long in the Capitol without giving an inch. Badgers are External primaries, meaning they tend to adopt the values of their larger communities. Iโ€™d expect a Badger to have moreโ€ฆ doubt, more misgivings. Or to dehumanise the Capitol more, as a way to cope. But Lions have a way of digging in their heels and saying no, I know whatโ€™s right. Theyโ€™re also, classically, the most at peace with being loners. And Sejanus isnโ€™t happy being alone in the Capitolโ€ฆ but you get the sense heโ€™d choose it every time over compromising his ideals.
I also think having him as a Lion creates an interesting read on the way he bonds so easily with Coriolanus and not with his father, despite the two being really quite similar people in a lot of ways. Sure, Coriolanus is charismatic and trying to be liked in a way that maybe Strabo isnโ€™t, Iโ€™m sure thatโ€™s part of it. But Coriolanus, fellow Lion primary, also seems to justโ€ฆ get it, where Sejanus is coming from with his ideals. Coriolanus doesnโ€™t like it โ€” Sejanus is rejecting everything that his Lion has been fighting for most of his life. But he gets the innate drive, because heโ€™s the same way with his own success, his safety and control, his familyโ€™s power. So he slots it into his calculations about how to act around Sejanus and moves on. Whereas I get the sense that Strabo probably doesnโ€™t understand Sejanus in quite the same way.
(External primaries โ€” Badger and Bird โ€” have this knack for just deciding to like something, or to be alright with something. In parents, this can often manifest in expecting their kids to be able to do the same thing. I donโ€™t think we have enough information on Strabo to conclusively sort him, but I do wonder if thatโ€™s whatโ€™s going on here.)
All that being said โ€” groups and his community in Two, forming one with the rebels, are important enough to Sejanus that Iโ€™m going to say he has a full Badger model, rather than just being a Lion with Badger ideals.
As for his secondary, heโ€™s a Lion, through and through. He goes the direct route, heโ€™s unapologetically himself. He can do the Lion secondary โ€œdimmer switchโ€ where he stays quiet about parts of himself or his ideals โ€” he would have had to learn that, to survive as long as he did. But the moments where heโ€™s at his most powerfulโ€ฆ Iโ€™m coming back to that conversation with Dr. Gaul again. He stands his ground and says โ€œYouโ€™ve no rightโ€. It might not get him anywhere in the text itself, but as a reader thatโ€™s a powerful moment. Even Coriolanus is grudgingly impressed by his pluck.
In this heโ€™s like Katniss, another Lion secondary. Sheโ€™s at her most powerful when she can stand her ground, speak her truth, and shoot straight for the problem at hand. Itโ€™s the berries, itโ€™s speaking from the heart in her propos, itโ€™s shooting Coin. But itโ€™s also such a dangerous thing to be in Panem, and Collins is keenly aware of that. It so easily could have gotten her killed. Sejanus is a case where it did.
An Aside on the Way Collins Writes Idealists vs Loyalists That Has Become itโ€™s Own Section as itโ€™s So Damn Long
The contrast between Sejanus and Katniss is also a good example of the way Collins tends to write about Idealist primaries (Lion and Bird) vs Loyalists (Snake and Badger). When Collins writes Idealists, they have a tendency to sort ofโ€ฆ careen off some edge or another, for their drive, or their ideals, or their philosophy.
Coriolanus loses himself in his drive for control, safety. He makes himself someone who will thrive in the Capitol, because he values his own comfort more than he values the snatches of empathy, of another way forward, that he ponders throughout Ballad. And so he murders the part of himself that cares. The boy who told Lucy Gray that he should be like Sejanus and try to quit the Games ends up trying to kill them both. This is his tragedy.
Gale loses himself in his drive to defeat the Capitol. He makes himself someone who has what it takes to help win the war, because he values justice and perhaps revenge more than he values the human life on the ground. And so he murders the part of himself that cares. The boy who told Katniss that heโ€™d protect their families above everything gets Prim killed. This is his tragedy.
Coin you can read as either or both of the above, depending on how much you think she believed in rebel justice vs her own security and power. Weโ€™ll get to Dr. Gaul later on, but sheโ€™s also an example of someone who cared more for her own safety and philosophy than the lives of the people she has power over.
Itโ€™s not as simple as โ€œgood Loyalists, bad Idealistsโ€ โ€” certainly the Idealists in this series are written sympathetically, even when the text disagrees with them. We understand Coriolanus wanting his family to be safe and fed. We understand Gale wanting justice. But surviving in a dystopian dictatorship, under that kind of violent oppression, is hard, and enacting meaningful change is even harder. Every single character has to grapple with that, but the Idealists tend to get the worst of it. Whether they choose to submit for personal gain like Coriolanus or fight fire with fire like Gale or Coin, they lose something of themselves in the process, and it drives them to tragedy one way or another.
And then thereโ€™s Sejanus. Sejanus, who knows the risk of loosing himself, whoโ€™s seen his father do the exact same thing and who knows what the cost of that has been. He will not murder the part of himself that cares. He will not even pretend. But he doesnโ€™t know how to move forward for his ideals, without that first act of self-mutilation, and he canโ€™t live with himself for that.
Andโ€ฆ this is speculation, but I think maybe heโ€™s terrified that heโ€™s destined for it anyway. โ€œWhat makes you think I could do that?โ€ he asks Coriolanus, when Coriolanus says he can do good with the Plinth fortune when he inherits. There are lots of reasons Sejanus might say that. Maybe itโ€™s just unthinkable to him to say that sort of money could do good. Maybe, in SHC terms, itโ€™s a sign of burning on his secondary, that he doesnโ€™t think heโ€™s capable of his own actions doing good. But I also think itโ€™s possible that he really doesnโ€™t think heโ€™ll get that far with his whole self intact, after the pressure exerted on him by his father, by the Capitol. That he thinks either his compassion will die young, or he will. So he nearly looses himself to despair, instead.
But to be a Loyalist, in this series, is to have something that grounds you. It protects you from loosing yourself the same way. Peeta is aware of the risk of self-mutilation. โ€œI donโ€™t want them to change me,โ€ he says, before his first Games. But heโ€™s a Snake primary, and the way he keeps hold of himself is his devotion to Katniss. To change him, Coriolanus must remove this devotion โ€” the hijacking โ€” but even this cannot last. Katniss, likewise, is kept focused and steadied by her own Snake primary, by the people she fights for. Itโ€™s still difficult โ€” wars have a way of coming for the people you love. But even when Katniss is at her lowest point, her love still centres her. When she kills Coin, itโ€™s โ€œfor Primโ€.
The text is saying โ€” yes, the world is big and you are very small. But if you can help one person, that means something. If you can fight for one person, that means something. And those small acts of kindness and love are where change comes from, in the end.
This is how I think Lucy Gray manages to be the rare Idealist in this series who doesnโ€™t careen off some edge or another. Because that sort of small-scale love is her ideal. Sheโ€™s focused, sheโ€™s grounded, she cares for the Covey and her own personal freedom and the impact of her own actions on the world.
And sheโ€™s flexible, about her ideals. When Coriolanus and Coin and Gale and Dr. Gaul careen off that edge itโ€™s sort ofโ€ฆ it, for them. Thereโ€™s no coming back, theyโ€™re too committed for that. Sejanus, if Iโ€™m right, is terrified that will be him, too. Lucy Gray is no stranger to becoming morally grey. Sheโ€™s a victor, sheโ€™s killed people. But, to her, this does not prevent her from doing the work to walk on the right side of the line. This does not excuse her from doing the work to walk on the right side of the line. Itโ€™s her lifeโ€™s work and she will see it through.
And then we have Coriolanus. And the thing is, he starts off with these sort of small-scale ideals, too. He cares for his family, he cares for Lucy Gray, and he prioritises them over a lot. And you could read that as being a performance, or that he only cares for what their wellbeing could do for him. I know a lot of people read him that way. But thereโ€™s another reading where itโ€™s at least a mix. Iโ€™d argue even his care for Sejanus winds up being at least halfway genuine. And in that readingโ€ฆ you get the sense that his care for them could have been what saved him, if only he had let it.
Dr. Volumnia Gaul โ€” Double Bird
Double Birds in fiction are classically either the (mad) scientist or the mentor figure. With Dr. Gaul being both, is it any wonder this is her sorting? @the-phoenix-heart already mentioned her sorting in their post, but as that was a quick one-liner and I have Many Thoughts, Iโ€™m going to chat about her here for a little bit!
So, Bird primary โ€” the way she mentors Coriolanus (and to a lesser extent the other Hunger Games mentors) is very Bird. She lays out the evidence of her system, her worldview, and expects this will be what convinces people to follow suit. @the-phoenix-heart wrote that Coriolanus probably built a Bird primary model for her, and I absolutely agree. And then thereโ€™s the bit where she says that what she loved about the war was that it proved her rightโ€ฆ which is such an Idealist thing to say, but maybe swings a little more Bird, too. Thereโ€™s that Bird drive for truth, as opposed to for a cause (which would swing Lion).
As for her Bird secondary, thatโ€™s obvious too. She loves plans, she loves tools, and sheโ€™s always working on tinkering with both to make them better. Her mutts are a beloved tool. The Games are a beloved tool. Coriolanus, fellow Bird secondary, takes a little while to come around to her ideals, but the Games as a tool? Control as strategy? He gets that immediately. โ€œSo obvious. Too obvious,โ€ he says, about controlling the eternal war.
Thereโ€™s an interesting thing about her Double Bird, mad scientist vibes, though, that I think separates her from the classic Double Bird scientist who gets so caught up in their scientific shenanigans that they donโ€™t realise or care how โ€œmadโ€ they come off.
This is pure speculation, but โ€” what do we think she was like, growing up? Sheโ€™s sadistic, a โ€œnerdโ€, quite probably some form of neurodivergent. What are the odds she was the โ€œweird kidโ€ in her class? Which is a hard thing to be under the best of circumstances, but in the Capitol? It must have been brutal. Thinking of her this way unlocked a lot about her character and motivations, for me.
No wonder she decided it was true that humanity is brutal, vicious, at constant war with itself. No wonder she doesnโ€™t take on evidence that questions that truth. No wonder she loved the war, when everyone else suddenly saw what she did. No wonder she loves the Games, which specifically use children as an example of the brutal nature she sees in humanity. Finally, something to point to when people tell her that children are innocent.
And no wonder she values control so highly. I think she probably learnt quite young โ€” at school, maybe at university โ€” that fear is a powerful means of control, of personal safety. Itโ€™s one of the main tools she passes down to Coriolanus. Getting back to what I mentioned about her Double Bird, mad scientist vibes โ€” in SHC terms, I think this is an Actor Bird costume sheโ€™s built for herself, as well as being reflective of her actual sorting. Everything โ€œmadโ€ about her seems so carefully calculated to manufacture a reaction. The nursery rhymes when she starts a conversation, that she drops the moment things get truly serious. The carefully planned encounter with Clemensia and the snakes. Sheโ€™s using the trope itself as a tool, because she knows โ€œthe mad scientistโ€ is something that scares people.
Tigris Snow โ€” Badger Snake with an exploded Badger secondary model in Ballad and an Actor Bird secondary model in Mockingjay
Unlike every other character in this book whoโ€™s been sorted so far, Tigris never talks about ideals or truths or philosophies or causes. She talks about people โ€” her family most of all, but others as well. Lucy Gray is a person, and that instantly matters to her. Sheโ€™s definitely a Loyalist, but I could see Snake, I could see Badger. Sheโ€™s a minor enough character that you could pull her either way. But Iโ€™ve come down on Badger for her for a couple of reasons. Apart from Sejanus, sheโ€™s one of the main mouthpieces for the โ€œthe districts are people and that mattersโ€ argument, which as Iโ€™ve said before isnโ€™t exclusive to Badgers but is a Badger thing.
And itโ€™s a small thing, but thereโ€™s the way she refuses to hear anything bad against her boss, Fabrica, as Tigris is so grateful she gave her a position in fashion. I think a Snake would be more likely to say that no, she doesnโ€™t owe Fabrica anything, if Fabrica is going to treat her like that. But Badgers take their obligation to the group seriously, and they can run into problems with dismissing their own worth in the process.
As for her secondaryโ€ฆ thereโ€™s definitely some Badger there. Sheโ€™s the main caretaker in the Snow household and caretaking is classically a Badger secondary thing. But the fact that this is something sheโ€™s had to learn how to be makes me think itโ€™s probably a model sheโ€™s picked up for that specific purpose โ€” which then exploded, this girl seems to always be up all night working.
The biggest example of her problem-solving is Coriolanusโ€™ Reaping Day shirt, and from that we learn that sheโ€™s adaptable. Take the fabric from an old pouch, exchange favours with the maintenance man, tell your boss her curtains need bleaching so you can slip in the shirt while youโ€™re doing it. Rapid-fire Bird, Snake ๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ sheโ€™s in her element, fashion, which makes it hard to distinguish between the two. But thereโ€™s the way she looks around at her environment for cues. The tesserae she takes from the walls on the maidโ€™s bathroom for buttons.
And thereโ€™s also the playful way she seems to have of coming up with little words and phrases on the fly, as a kid. Nicknames like Coryo and the Grandmaโ€™am, and the mantra Snow lands on top. I think sheโ€™s a Snake secondary, the balance to Coriolanusโ€™ Bird that made them such an effective team growing up. Itโ€™s the same thing we see with him and Lucy Gray, another Snake.
But then we arrive at Mockingjay, and Tigris feels so incredibly different. Sheโ€™s this very carefully constructed persona of a tiger, enigmatic and silent with a purr when she talks. In SHC terms, itโ€™s an Actor Bird costume, itโ€™s too obviously constructed to be anything else. As for why she made itโ€ฆ thatโ€™s anyoneโ€™s guess. But itโ€™s such a break from the way she presents herself in tbosas that has to have been part of the point.
One thing about that costume, though? She canโ€™t take it off. Itโ€™s literally tattooed on her skin. And if thereโ€™s one thing Actor Birds (whether innate or modelled) donโ€™t seem to like, itโ€™s when they get stuck in one of their roles.

Equestria Girls SHC Sorting
Tumblr media
This is part 1 of a 4-part series, since I'll be going through all of the movies. There's already a My Little Pony sorting that you can check out here. I agree with most of them, so I'll be focusing on characters that weren't covered or are exclusive to Equestria Girls, like Sunset, Sci-Twi, and Spike. A basic explanation of the system that I'm using by @wisteria-lodge is here.
Sunset: Badger Lion
Tumblr media
Sunset starts off the movies as a villain, with a Glory Hound Lion primary model and a Bird secondary model. Sunset's obviously jealous of Twilight, because they're foils - they were both students of Princess Celestia. Sunset wanted power (her Glory Hound Lion primary) and became evil, while Twilight became a Princess, something that Sunset wanted all along.
Sunset also has a Bird secondary model, but she's really bad at using it until later in the series. She tries to make plans, but she's too impulsive to have foresight. Her Bird secondary is used to concoct plans like secretly taking photos of Twilight to show how she'd be a bad Fall Formal Princess, and editing photos to make it look like Twilight trashed the gym. Her plans are pretty bad, since she left the real photos on top of a trash can. Sunset's Lion secondary is pretty obvious - she throws the crown that she stole from Twilight through the portal.
Sunset's Badger primary is burned in the first movie - she bullies everyone around her so that she can be powerful. She dehumanizes everyone, and she says that she doesn't know anything about friendship. She uses her understanding of social situations to tear groups of friends apart. Hints of her Badger primary are visible, even when she's a villain. She says that she rules the school because she knows how to fit in. She didn't do anything to hurt her ex-boyfriend after she broke up with him, even though everyone expected her to (She says in the second movie that she never liked Flash. She was just using him to be more popular, but it's still nice that she didn't do anything to hurt him). She refuses to hurt Spike, and says that she's not a monster (which is ironic, since she turns into a demon in the next scene).
She wants to be a Princess more for acceptance than power, even though she doesn't realize that until she unburns. She only starts getting mad at Twilight when everyone starts praising her. When Sunset's a Princess, she focuses on how everyone will be loyal to her.
Twilight: Double Bird
Tumblr media
Twilight has a Badger primary model that explodes as the movies go on. Twilight, just by existing, brings her group of friends together. She constantly talks about groups, primarily her group of friends. She doesn't understand why everyone in high school is divided into cliques, instead of everyone working together. She refuses to go back to Equestria, where all of her true friends are, if it means that the human world will be destroyed. The human world needs her more, so she's okay with staying there forever if it means that she can keep it safe. When Sunset starts crying, Twilight immediately forgives her.
Twilight's Bird secondary is endearingly obvious - the first thing that she does when she's transported to a new world is gather information about it. She finds a library so that she can research.
Spike: Snake Badger
Tumblr media
Spike ran into the portal after Twilight, even though Princess Celestia forbade him from going with her. Everything that Spike does is for Twilight. Spikeโ€™s Snake primary is pretty obvious when he tells Twilight to ignore the versions of her friends in the alternate universe, because they aren't Twilight's real friends.
His Badger secondary is something that he uses all the time, mostly to talk Twilight out of anxious spirals. He's definitely more of a Courier Badger than a Bookkeeper Badger, even though he shows elements of both.

หห‹โžทStarting Off Simple With my Initial Reasons
This might have very well been expected, so I apologize.
<3
โ‹† โ€” First, I would like to say that Aerith would greatly appreciate your childlike and adventurous nature, as it matches well with hers. Having her person, who's down to have fun (together, specifically) is definitely something that means a lot to her.
โœฐ โ€” Her empathy and capability to read others and understand would also be of value to you, I think. She'd never make you feel as though the way you're feeling and/or thinking is wrong in any way. If she didn't understand, she'd try damn hard to. She' never judges nor purposefully makes you feel less than. "You know.. I like that you aren't afraid of the way you feel."
โœฐ โ€” Following that same idea, she'd give you the freedom to express yourself however need be. Whether it's a suit and tie or a leather top, you're you. And that's all Aerith cares about. Pink and frills kept all to herself. She'd never try and force anything onto you unless it was something you explicitly wanted. "Gender isn't worn on the outside, silly. It's what you got in here." With a little tap to your chest.
โ‹† โ€” Along with that, your moody and blunt tendencies, while contrasting with Aerith, wouldn't be much of a problem in her eyes. She really just enjoys having somebody around who wants to be with her as much as she does them. Even if their mood varies. She'd come prepared. Any and all time spent in the others company is good and valuable. Infact, I'd say she'd enjoy not having to guess what you mean.
โ‹† โ€” To be met with the same warmth and nurturing hands she provides to everyone else will be a breath of fresh air. Your equal support of one another is something you'd each cherish. Especially Aerith. To her, it had been a rarity her whole life to be included. To be supported. Whether or not you share the same sentiment, you also hate being left out. The two of you would make an excellent pairing for the very reason of never letting the other feel alone.
โ‹† โ€” Ah, but one good thing about Aerith is she won't push it too hard. If space is what you need, it's what she's got. Privacy and alone time aren't a price of love, and she knows that well.
โœฐ โ€” Your creative passions are definitely things she's intrigued by. As evident in Rebirth, Aerith, too, has a knack for singing and taking the stage herself. I could imagine the two of you bonding over these shared interests and talents together. (More on this later..)
โ‹† โ€” Aerith's church! The scenic aspect of it, along with the familiarity of a religious environment would appeal to you. Also, the lack of nature in Midgar. Both the church and her house would be two of your favorite places. (More on this later..)

๐Ÿฉท: Your similarities make for some good times. Seeing eye to eye is a good thing! She gets you, you get her. Between Aerith's sass and your feist, some pretty eventful stuff is bound to happen.
๐Ÿฉท: Aerith loves your stupid jokes. It's the little things, is it not? Teasing and giggling with each other are some of the highlights of hangouts.
๐Ÿฉท: You're equally as enthusiastic and eager, which leads to very fulfilling dates. And, while going out is certainly on the agenda, neither of you mind kicking it back every once in awhile to invest in some cartoons.
๐Ÿฉท: Being childish does not mean being stupid. Another thing the two of you share is intelligence. Some deep conversations are to come from this, with both of you walking away in comfortable agreement.
๐Ÿฉท: When it gets rough and unstable, Aerith's your rock. Just a glimpse of that smile makes it feel like all the pieces fit together, even if they don't. She stands grounded and constant when you aren't, and that's comforting.
๐Ÿฉท: Being each other's certified hype people! Raising your significant other up is a key point in this relationship. Aerith is your girl, and you're her partner. Some things just come with the package, and unwavering support is all over this one. It's all high-fives and "woohoo!"s.
๐Ÿฉท: Loving what's unique. She'd be so giddy to play with your hair. Forehead kisses, also. "Physical proof of just how cute you are!" Her eyes never fail to catch you in a trance. So deep, and full of life. All of your features are her favorite ones. She gushes all day non-stop about her awesome partner.
๐Ÿฉท: As for taking charge, I say it's shared amongst you guys. Both of you are outspoken and bold people. It just depends on the day, and who gets to it first.

๐Ÿ’ญ:Lots of passion.
๐Ÿ’ญ:She'd definitely model for you! Quite a few of your canvases are spent on her.
๐Ÿ’ญ:You'd be the one to show her a pretty sky. Quell that fear.
๐Ÿ’ญ: Karaoke nights are often. From sweet 'n savory duets up in her room to bars/spots you find around town. You find she looks stunning under the cheap lighting.
๐Ÿ’ญ:Academic pursuits. You see her face in every crowd, feel her embrace after every speech.
๐Ÿ’ญ:Shared scrapbook. Preserved versions of everytime you finally had your other half.
๐Ÿ’ญ:You aren't getting out of flower deliveries. A helping hand (or two) certainly won't hurt. And she requires your input, of course.
๐Ÿ’ญ:The church is that perfect mix of indoor/outdoor. Pretty flowers that smell like her. Sophisticated, yet aged and deteriorated structure your eyes can appreciate. Right up your alley.
๐Ÿ’ญ:Her house is cozy and perfect for late nights in. A little chunk of heaven that belongs to her, that she lets you into.
๐Ÿ’ญ:Like the modeling, she doesn't mind getting her makeup done, either. You make her feel especially pretty when she's all done up. You get to have fun, and see the confident sparkle in her eye when it's done.
๐Ÿ’ญ:Carefree and awkward dancing between the two of you and the stars. Her hands here, your feet there.. it's uncoordinated and perfect.
๐Ÿ’œ: Your hair rests under her curious fingertips, tousled and bronzed. โIt's so..โž You suck in a breath, shoulders going slump with disappointed expectation. โ..pretty.โž Oh. Hah. Nice.

bird primary + slightly burnt snake secondary (bird model) (burnt-out badger model)
I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this, oh well :). I recently found the SHC community and fell in love with your analysis. (Disclaimer that I may have misinterpreted some of the traits, again, very new at this.)
I am hoping you can help me sort out my secondary. My primary is very obviously a bird, no problem. I mean, I exibit certain chararistics of the others at certain times, such as strongly valuing personal loyalty and such, but I think complexity is just part of being a human and I fit really neatly into almost all of the bird stuff I've read.
and I mean... "strongly valuing personal loyalty" can just, very easily, be something that you fold into your Bird System.
But my secondary is really giving me trouble. But I keep flipping between snake with badger model or burnt badger with snake model. (With others thrown in for flavor!)
For context, I was raised in VERY emphasized badger home. And like, mostly, I agree? Hard work, grit, and consistency ARE extremely important, and while those are not the only way to ever accomplish things, they tend to be the most reliable and the most likely to give long term success. They also tend to build long lasting relationships that are supportive and grow with you over time and not just around one time/phase/stage in life. (Not that those aren't important) I want to be like that- be the reliable hard-working one. But I'm not! I am fairly lazy actually, and am constantly searching for a way around projects/problems, very often to my own detriment.
So okay. We've got some negative self-talk here.
I don't like the word "lazy" - mostly because it's just incredibly non-specific. "Lazy" can mean issues with executive functioning, it can mean I don't think xyz is important, so of course I'll cut corners. It can mean you're exhausted. It can mean you're depressed. It can mean 'if I am not working literally all the time, I'm worthless.' It can mean you're having a fun, goof-off day. See what I mean?
So what this does tell me is 1) You've got a strong Badger secondary voice in your ear, saying that This Is How It Has To Be and 2) that kind of chafes. You're about working around things, working smarter not harder, and getting out of/finishing quickly the things you don't want to do. Which is 100% completely fine! All it means is that you're probably not a Badger secondary!
And while I am very good at lying and do it to get myself out of problems semi-regularly, I feel guilty about it after (not usually in the moment) becuase of my moral system (bird primary).
I'm leaning slightly-burnt Snake here. Healthy Snakes don't usually refer to their shape-changing as "lying," so I'm keeping that in mind.
But being so snake/adaptable does have many benefits, especially in talking/working with others, and I value my ability to change to fit each person or situation. I am also often able to find unique solutions to the problems I caused myself by not doing it "right" the first time.
Definitely sounds like an improvisational secondary, and changing for the person (as opposed to changing for the situation) is very Snake.
My father has a job in the local public eye and I grew up learning how to be able to talk to anyone, act interested in anything, and have a different mask for school, vs public, vs with friends, vs just being me at home.
Sounds like you built an Actor Bird secondary model (and some of that is of course you going into Neutral.
And sometimes I feel guilty for "manipulating" people, as my moral system emphasis honesty, but just as often I pride myself on making people feel good becuase I figured out what they needed/wanted and gave it to them while making it seem like it wasn't a calculated read of the situation.
Snake. And a fairly important part of this system is that "manipulating" is a completely neutral problem-solving technique. You can manipulate people to do good, and manipulate people to do bad, just the same as you can use the Badger dependability and ability to fly under the radar to do good things, and bad things.
Overall, I am grateful for my childhood (truly I've got great parents) and I think it's super important to be able to react well to unexpected circumstances, so much so that when I finish college this spring (we'll get to that in a second) I want to go into disaster response and crisis management to help others deal with unforseen circumstances. I've worked as an EMT, and hopefully soon as a 911 dispatcher before going into formal disaster response.
I think that will suit you perfectly and (as I'm sure you probably know) that's something a Badger secondary would not be nearly as good at.
I'm very comfortable using snake methods and it makes me feel clever when I come up with an unexpected solution or pull off a tricky social maneuver-
This is a big sign this is your secondary - using it makes you feel powerful.
I just feel guilty because they hard-core fail me when it comes to big tasks I simply don't want to do- situations where the only solution is to just get it done the hard way, and trust me, I would have looked for any other options.
Yeah, that's issues with executive functioning surrounding non-preferred tasks.
I see this most often in my schoolwork. I'm a double-major senior and I am definitely burnt out from school.
Don't blame you. Sounds like you bootstrapped your way through on the family Badger secondary model, and now you're sick of using it.
I am a "gifted child," and I have always done very well in school. I've never had to work very hard at any subject, and so I never did. I always procrastinated and slid in 2 minutes before a deadline.
Very, very common story. You're using adrenaline to hack your brain to punch through executive functioning issues, we've all done it, we know it's not sustainable. Same with not having to work hard in school - you're brain's going fast, you're making connections, you're using meta-knowledge (you're using your secondary.)
The difference is that in college I started not caring about deadlines, being very late or not turning something in entirely. I got A's and F's, no in between. I am graduating, mostly due to amazing professors.
You were burnt out. This is what burnout sounds like. But you made it through, and honestly people just care if you graduated, or not.
There have been things in my life that I've worked really hard at, such as becoming an emt while in high school or my internship last summer, and I have felt really proud of that. But I don't enjoy the work for its own sake, and there have been just as many things I've cared about that I let be mediocre at best becuase I didn't want to put in the effort.
And that's fine! There are some things you care about (and you're incredibly accomplished) and there are some things you don't, and what's the problem with that?
And, some of the best feedback I recieved from that internship was that I always was working hard- and seemed positive about it. When I told them I have to "work hard to work hard" they were shocked and I felt very happy. For 2 reasons: 1, becuase I did actually put in a lot of work to work hard and it showed me that I can when I truly want to (I was starting to doubt), and 2, that they perceived me like that.
I'm guessing it also felt good because there's a large part of you that sees Badger as "the good one."
There's a slightly annoying thing about being human, that gets into the sunk-cost fallacy and things like that, that things we put a lot of effort into are inherently better, or more valuable. But it's just not true. Often the thing that's so easy it doesn't feel like work, the story or painting that just came together, *is better* than the one you slaved and sweat and bled over.
Also, I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, probably stemming back from before high school (it's strongly in family history, inevitable more than circumstancial), so how much of that overshadows my personality?
I mean, I think your personality comes through loud and clear. Just stop describing yourself as "lazy" okay?
To make things more complicated I love learning and picking up random bits of information, and I love trying new things. My nickname was Wikipedia in high school becuase I could always be relied upon to have some cursory knowledge about anything, though not always the helpful knowledge. (Bird vibes) I do that for the fun of it though, and it doesn't tend to be the basis of how I make decisions or react to situations.
We know you built a Bird model, so it's good that you can use it as a toy.
So what is going on here? Am I a burnt out badger who needs to not be in the school system for a while to reset and be able to dedicate myself to the things I love, and who uses snake mechanisms to cover my weak spots becuase I got good at that in childhood
You can burn out models. It's pretty common, and it's the puzzle piece you're missing here. You are a Snake. You model Badger when you have to. But because it IS hard, use it too much and it burns out and starts to hurt to use.
At which point you fall back on your Snake secondary and Actor Bird model. Don't worry. You made it through the tough times, and your new situation seems much better suited to your Snake.
Or am I a snake who strongly values badger traits but needs to figure out how to blend them? (And how do I do that?) And also go back to therapy? What's bird doing in there, anyway? I think I'm leaning option two, but like I said- I'm very flip-floppy about the whole thing.
Thank you so much- sorry it got so long. (Imagine if I were confused about my primary too!)
Hey, therapy is fantastic, but it sounds to me like you're doing pretty okay. :)
thanks @adisgracetotheforcesofevil for the submission

Sorting Hat Chats - Nimona
@sevilemar got me to watch the wonderful new movie Nimona. I'm very excited about it, and I thought I'd try my hand at sorting the main characters, since I haven't seen that done yet. Here are the basic of the system I'm using.
Spoilers below the cut:
This is a very Snake Primary movie overall, so I'm going to start with our most obvious Snake Primaries and work from there.
The titular Nimona is a Snake primary. In her flashback, we see her seeking connection with all the different animals, but it only works when she finds Gloreth. And then Gloreth is her PERSON, they're in love, it's adorable, and then, the most heartbreaking thing that's ever happened to her, Gloreth betrays her. And thus her Snake primary burns. She doesn't connect with anyone else (we might assume) for the next thousand years, and tho she's self-confident and self-sufficient, she admits that the hatred from others makes it hard for her to value herself. Then she hears about Ballister, and she gets very excited, because here's, finally, a potential kindred spirit. She takes Ballister to be the classic burnt Snake/Bird villain archetype, wanting to take revenge on the world that rejected him, and is disappointed when that's not quite him (I'll elaborate when I get to sorting Ballister). Nimona herself is angry with the Kingdom and its rejection of her, but she seems to keep her anger to graffiti and fantasies of revolution, but Ballister, if her new person wants to overthrow the government, she's all on board and will help him however she can. Even when he's not what she expected and doesn't fully accept her yet, sticking with him and helping him is so much better than being alone, and she'll stand by him until he completely rejects and fears her.
Nimona's obstacle to the acceptance she craves is wrapped up in her secondary: She's a Lion. I read once that a shapeshifter Lion secondary would have a distinguishing trait that would be constant through all their forms, and that's obviously Nimona. Her animal forms are consistent over a thousand years, her impression of Ballister has a red streak in his hair and acts like her, and when she properly acts (a bit of a Bird model), as the Demon Baby and Ambrosius, she loses patience and lets herself through pretty quickly, terrifying the Squire and making Ambrosius' death a bit over the top. And her consistent difference from everyone around her is her struggle, she can look similar to all the animals but not so similar that they accept her. Gloreth, miraculously, accepts her human form and her shapeshifting abilities as well... until she doesn't. So she's careful, opening up to Ballister again. She's Nimona, she's defiantly herself, and not defined by any group, but she's reluctant to explain. She does enjoy lying to Ballister, but only as a momentary joke. (And maybe jabbing at his gullibility is related to her burnt tendency to trust people at face value?) She gradually reveals herself, until she's unmasked as Gloreth's monster, and Ballister leaves her.
And now she's broken, she burns entirely, I think, primary and secondary. She takes a form without any of her usual red, and she's not playing a role, she's become the monster they all think she is. And she loses her weakened sense of self-preservation entirely. She is only drawn to the statue of the woman she loved and who betrayed her.
Until Ballister stops her. "I'm sorry. I see you, Nimona. And you're not alone." Ballister knows all her secrets and still sees her true self, her Person finally accepts all of her authenticity... and she returns to herself and falls into his arms.
In light of all this, I was at first confused by her final sacrifice, but then I noticed, first she looks at the screaming crowds, and looks upset, but only after she looks back at Ballister, and sees his horror, does her face turn to resolve. She's always empathized with the people of the Kingdom, especially children (as they feel like her, similarity is a good way for Snakes to connect), but I don't think she's ever really taken them as her problem. But when Ballister fully accepts her, she fully accepts him, which includes, as Snakes tend to, adopting his values. She takes his duty to defend the people as her own. He's a hero, and she's his sidekick.
(Damn, I want to cry again.)
Ambrosius Goldenloin's Snake primary is very clear from his imagined monologue to the Director, so I'll quote it at length here: "I've lost my mind. I've lost everything. The man I love, my best friend." He just says his everything is his Person. Followed by a note of jealousy: "Although now he's got a new best friend. What's that about?" His distrust of Ballister, here and elsewhere, is distinctly framed as "What else is he hiding? Who is the real him?" because if he never knew Ballister, then their connection wasn't real, and his loyalty to him isn't owed. But he isn't sure he's wrong about Bal, and so he keeps trying to make sense of his confusion, and find out if he should still be loyal to him. And he's built Ballister into his sense of self so much that he then asks: "Who am I? A direct descendant of Gloreth? I never asked for that." This man's not a Lion primary, he doesn't find his destiny or heritage meaningful in defining himself. And finally: "Now everyone expects me to arrest Ballister. And if I don't, I'm a traitor to you. And if I do, I'm a traitor to him!" He frames his choice as a binary one between two personal loyalties: to the Director, and to Ballister. They are his People, deciding between them is the only thing that matters. Gloreth, the Institute, the ideals he was taught, they don't even register for him. And Ambrosius deciding which of the two to trust is much of his arc.
His secondary is less explicit, but I think the clearest moment of him problem-solving is trying to catch Ballister on the subway. Todd, a stereotypical Lion secondary, sees an obvious clue and immediately wants to move. But Ambrosius waits, and watches. And his first clue is "He hates freestyle jazz." His skill in this investigation, as he argued before, is that he knows Ballister the best, so he'll have the best chance of catching him. He's invested in Ballister, so he has power around him. And once Ambrosius has thoroughly watched the full clip (and asked a tech where the train is going), only then does he decide where to go. The thoroughness and humility here, coupled with his intro scene giving Ballister such care and support, make me think Ambrosius is a Badger secondary. A Lover archetype for our hero/villain's boyfriend, but a variation who's very conflicted with a whole lot of agency. I love it. (And his sorting matches mine.)
Ballister Boldheart/Blackheart is a wonderful Bird primary, with an arc of transforming his belief system over the course of the movie, who models Snake for the two important Snake primaries in his life.
He starts out with a dream, "I'm here to slay monsters and protect our kingdom." But it's never about his specialness, I think he just absorbed the cultural narrative, and so just did what seemed like the obvious right thing. (Flashbacks to my Bird primary model) By the time he graduates the Institute, they've "brainwashed [him] good", as Nimona says. The Institutional Badgery values of protecting the Kingdom from monsters has become entirely his. And the public's doubt in him gets to him, he has trouble not absorbing their input.
And when it all falls apart, he's immediately concerned with the Truth. He's innocent, this isn't right, he just needs to give the right people the right information and it'll all be fine. He's not the burnt Snake primary villain Nimona expects, his values are still pretty intact despite everyone turning on him. It takes time for them to break down. The plot challenges him one piece at a time. When he sees the video, he edits his system enough to say that "the Institute's not the problem, the Director is." He gradually accepts more and more of Nimona. When Ambrosius rejects him, he decides it's ok to embrace the villain role a bit and have fun.
He definitively turns on Nimona not because of his loyalty to her or to Ambrosius, but because of a piece of paper (so Bird pri) and a deep part of his system: "Gloreth's monster is the embodiment of evil and what the Kingdom needs protection from." Only when he sees Nimona again, understands her, and lets go of this belief can he fully accept her. His early system, "I'm here to slay monsters and protect our kingdom" is half transformed. He's no longer here to slay monsters, he's still here to protect the Kingdom - but by accepting the Monster.
I think he's also a Bird secondary. He builds his own arm in a derelict tower. He makes an innocence wall to connect the dots. He likes making plans and he's initially uncomfortable with Nimona's improvisation when things inevitably go south. There's a particular way he's supposed to do this, honestly, quietly, carefully. But then, when Ambrosius rejects him, he takes up a bit of an Actor mask of the villain role, and he and Nimona start to sync and have fun together. He trusts his training and he's better at swordplay than any of the other knights, because, as Ambrosius said, he worked harder than any of them. And he learns to plan with Nimona, using her shapeshifting as a tool to get the confession from the Director. And him leaving his sword behind, "I don't fight for her anymore", the tools he uses are an important part of his identity.
The Director is definitely an Idealist. Her values are Badgery, about protecting the community from the outgroup, but her final decision to turn the cannon on the city shows that this ideal is inflexible when it comes to protecting actual people. Since we don't see her change, it's hard to tell which Idealist primary she is, but I think she's a Lion. She tells Ambrosius!Nimona that she had a dream as a child, and simply states that Ballister's knighthood would be the first crack in the wall. She has a monologue, but it's not an explanation. And when everyone around her turns on her, she doesn't update, she doesn't change like Ballister does, her convictions are internal and she carries them to the terrible end. And I think she's a Bird secondary. Lasers are her distinctive tools, to kill the Queen, to knock down Ambrosius, and to (try to) kill Nimona. She plots and lies, easily but carefully, on her own, no improvisation and no support from others. Her monologue is just her dropping her mask and speaking her Liony conviction.
Todd (Thoddeus) Sureblade strikes me as a pretty stereotypical Double Lion. He's impulsive, ready to rush off to catch Ballister at the first clue of where he went. He's a Glory Hound, competing with Ambrosius to lead the knights. And he never questions that he's in the right and better than those around him, until the very end. We only see his sad expression, but reading into that, I think the way the final battle ended shook him, and he's done some emotional soul-searching.
And while my sortings for the antagonist characters are more tentative, I enjoy the concept that this story, that's so much about inverting classical tropes, would invert the character archetypes such that Snake and Bird primaries are the heroes and Lion primaries (with Badgery and Glory Hound values) are the villains.
(These are the 5 characters I think we know enough about to sort decently. The Queen, the Squire, and Gloreth don't get much screen time.)
To sum up:
Nimona - Snake/Lion (Bird sec model)
Ambrosius - Snake/Badger
Ballister - Double Bird (Snake pri model)
The Director - Lion/Bird
Todd (Thoddeus) Sureblade - Double Lion
(If anyone else has sorted these characters, or has disagreements, I'd love to hear about it. I'm trying to get better at this.)

hii!!! i was wondering if youโ€™ve ever heard of sortinghatchats- they sort characters into a primary (your motivations and WHY you do things) and secondary houses (your methods and HOW you do things) amongst a lot of other fascinating terminology!
example: Badger Primary, Snake Secondary etc
(also they replaced the original terminology to further distance themself from She Who Must Not Be Named)
links if interested: the quiz- https://ejadelomax.itch.io/sortinghatchats
an explanation from one of the members- https://wisteria-lodge.tumblr.com/post/646868516725768192/wisterias-great-big-sorting-hat-chats-explanation
i hope you find this interesting and iโ€™m sorry for wasting your time!!
this was really interesting, don't apologize! i've never heard of this, but i went ahead and had a fun time taking it for all the characters! (plus, it's not supporting you-know-who so that's a bonus^^)
jinwol is a badger primary (LOYALIST - FELT - EXTERNAL) and a snake secondary (IMPROVISATIONAL - CONDITIONAL - FLUID) modeling lion.
yul is a snake primary (LOYALIST - BUILT - INTERNAL) and a bird secondary (FOUNDATIONAL - CONDITIONAL - SOLID)
iseul is a lion primary (IDEALIST - FELT - INTERNAL) and a snake secondary (IMPROVISATIONAL - CONDITIONAL - FLUID) modeling badger.
xst is a snake primary (LOYALIST - BUILT - INTERNAL) and a burned snake secondary (IMPROVISATIONAL - CONDITIONAL - FLUID)

I'm either in Badger mode or in neutral. Sometimes it seems like there's no middle ground.

Sorting Hat Chats - A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Heeeey I'm back again. Hunger Games is one of my recent hyperfixations, so I'm doing a sorting of the latest book/film. I'll only be sorting Coriolanus Snow and Lucy-Gray Baird in this post. And Dr. Gaul oops.
An explanation of the system I am using can be found here. (Credit: @wisteria-lodge )
SPOILERS FOR A BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES BOOK AND FILM
Tumblr media
LUCY-GRAY BAIRD is a thriving, healthy Snake secondary through and through. She loves performing, she loves playing coy, and she clearly relishes in getting one up on her enemies. This is a woman who turn her death sentence into a concert. Her plan to defeat Reaper, someone larger and deadlier than her, is to piss him off and give him the run around until he dies of exhaustion (or drinks from a poisoned puddle). To get one up on Mayfair when her name is called Lucy-Gray puts a snake in her dress to freak her out and subsequently humiliate her on live TV. No punches held back.
She's described by her actress as "a performer in a hunt," and she is. She always gives off the impression that she is always acting and always authentic in every moment. Snow certainly can never tell if she's lying or not and for all his faults he is smart.
CORIOLANUS SNOW meanwhile is a Bird secondary (I know, oh the irony) and the two secondaries slot in well together. In ABOSAS we see how he is always calculating in every interaction how he can leverage this for the most gain. He wears a carefully manufactured mask playing up whatever trait he has to to get what he wants from the person he is talking to. That's the Actor Bird in him, he can't just become someone like Lucy-Gray can. Which is why Snow works so well as a mentor for her. He can make all the plans he wants and give her every advantage to win, and she can immediately go along with it without skipping a beat.
We also see his Bird secondary on full display when he starts to come into power. He immediately starts making plans for the 11th Hunger Games when he comes back to the Capitol. His signature method for killing people is poison, and in sixty years that never changes. It's a risky plan that always works so why would he change it? And of course we know after he becomes president just how much effort he puts into controlling Katniss with more and more plans.
As for their primaries, well, that's why they constantly misunderstand each other. Coriolanus and Lucy-Gray look at each other and they both see a Snake primary, but those aren't their true sortings. Lucy-Gray is wearing a Snake primary model, and Coriolanus is wearing a Snake primary performance, not even a model.
Lucy-Gray loves the Covey, but at the end of the day when Mayor Lipp wants her dead Lucy-Gray doesn't need to think twice about running away. She knows they can take care of themselves, and she values her own freedom above anything else. It's apparent also in how she treats Billy-Taupe. She loved him once, but the moment he cheated on her she immediately cut him out of her life and doesn't seem to regret that decision. "Without trust you might as well be dead to me."
Lucy-Gray is a Lion primary, and like her secondary it's healthy. Her mantra is "Nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping." She's another example of the Jack Sparrow style of Lion primary, the Fae lion. Freedom is good and control is bad. It's also why when she leaves Snow she makes it a whole production where she sings him "The Hanging Tree" and runs around him as a way to fuck with him. She knows that Corio isn't the man she thought he was and she wants to show him she knows.
Lucy-Gray is the Yin to Katniss's Yang. Katniss is a famous Snake Lion, and Lucy-Gray is the inverse of that, a Lion Snake. That quote about Lucy-Gray being a performer in a hunt is followed by Katniss being "a hunter in a performance." The revolution in a small way begins with Lucy-Gray and is ended by Katniss. Lucy-Gray loves freedom before all else, and that means she is never going to fight the Capitol like Katniss would, "it's too early for [K]atniss," she says. But Katniss is that Snake primary who loves so deeply and devastatingly that of COURSE she would end up fighting the Capitol.
But I think Lucy-Gray likes Snake primaries. I think she likes how much the value freedom, but also the way they value their people. That's what she sees when she sees Snow, a man who will do anything to protect the people he loves over himself. But that's just a performance Snow puts on, because he knows that looks much more nobler than what he actually is.
Snow actually primary matches Lucy-Gray. When we see him he's a young lion. The impression I get from Snow is entitlement. He thinks because of the way he was born that he just inherently deserves to have what is owed to him. But after it's found out that he cheated to help Lucy-Gray win, he is stripped of what little he had and sent to be a peacekeeper. He doesn't know what he wants anymore, because he can't have what he truly wants, so he convinces himself what he wants is Lucy-Gray. Except, the moment he realizes he can absolutely still get that power he turns on her immediately.
His goals never change, in the end Snow does indeed land on top, as he achieves those goals. He becomes president, and then it becomes all about maintaining power and control. And that's the real crux of his Lion primary. Like Lucy-Gray he is a Fae Lion, but on the opposite end of the spectrum. Power and control are good, and he should have that over everyone else in the world. I also see his primary in his method of choice for killing people. He willingly poisons himself so no one catches on, that is some lion devotion to his cause of control.
But, despite him trying to appear completely composed at all times, you can see that very emotional Lion primary underneath it all. I mean, he's clearly obsessed with screwing over Katniss's life in particular because he sees both Lucy-Gray and Sejanus in her. Meanwhile everything he does that fucks with Peeta is to fuck with her, despite the fact that he was also part of that suicide threat. He doesn't like that emotional Lion I think. What he wants is to maintain control over everything, and the appear as though he has this carefully constructed worldview/ideology. He has these intelligent/convincing arguments on the power of hope and the purpose of the games. It can look very Bird to people, and I think it is. DR. GAUL is absolutely a Double Bird Mad Scientist, and I think Snow adopted a Bird primary model based off of hers.
So...
Lucy-Gray Baird - Lion primary, Snake model/Snake secondary
Coriolanus Snow - Lion primary, Bird model and Snake performance/Bird secondary
Dr. Gaul - Bird primary/Bird secondary
