Meet upper management's enforcer~ Drew Smythson. Who watches the watchmen? Well, it's this guy's job~ or it was till he was pulled back to do said job. This vampire is called back into work to go after any watcher that is failing to do their job or is no longer useful. You can see him working at a food truck called OutLawed Burgers with his skeleton / monster crew that help him run things in the truck to keep his cover going.

You know on one hand I love beautiful things I love supporting artists and businesses that keep beautiful crafts alive I think you should have fewer special things instead of more cheap things. But you ain't never gonna write in a notebook that costs more than $20. I mean imo $20 is pushing it. you're not going to go crazy style on a monogrammed leather notebook

Do any of you have ideas about what type of ambient magic Tamora pierce's other characters would have an obvious one I think would be Lalasa from POTS having thread magic?
Molly here, since I have the most familiarity with the Tortall books.
Lalasa would absolutely have thread magic! (And if anyone wants to write a Tortall/Emelan crossover fic where Sandry and Lalasa hang out, I want to read it!!) Here are the others I can think of
Kourrem (I think. It might be Alanna's other student) would also have thread magic. She sort of already does. (Incidentally, Tammy also has a short story in which a type of thread magic makes an appearance. I love how frequently she uses this motif, since it's not particularly common in other fiction.)
I like to think Raoul might also have thread magic, after he and Kel have their little sewing race
Alanna and Neal would obviously be healers (they already are)
I think Coram teaches Alanna and her fellow pages to make their own training swords? (someone does) so he could be a smith-mage
There's also someone in Song of the Lioness who is mentioned is good with fire. I think it was Duke Baird. Do he could have some type of fire-crafting (This is what we determined Goodwin's ambient magic would be, since he has an interest in metal-crafting, but is also an excellent cook.)
Tunstall could have plant magic, since he grows tiny roses
Mistress Knoll is a good enough cook to be a cook mage (I guess it's a shame she wasn't born in Emelan.)
and Rosto plays the flute, so he could have some type of music-magic
That's all I can think of, though I would be very interested to see what the Emelan analog of Beka's gift is. I haven't read Trickster in a long enough time (or Immortals at all) to speak for anyone in those series, so I'd love to see people add to this list!
Thanks for the question!

So I'm writing historical fiction, set in Medieval Eastern Rome. My problem is that most characters share the same few names. Even family names and titles lack diversity. I can't really change them, since they are historical, so it gets very confusing when you have 5 characters named Alexios, 2 of which share a family name and title. How do I deal with this?
Characters with Same Name in Historical Fiction
So, here's where a few things are going to come in handy...
1 - The "Fiction" part of "historical fiction." - Since you're not writing non-fiction, you have the abilities to take liberties for the sake of the story you're trying to tell, which includes the purpose of clarity.
2 - Understanding naming conventions - Every language and culture have their own conventions surrounding given names, nicknames, clan names, diminutives, and patronymics... so it's important to understand how these worked in the time and setting of your historical fiction. Because even if we know a historical person as Phineas Smythe, that doesn't mean he was known that way back in the day. He might instead have been known as Phineas Smythson.
3 - Understanding Anglicization - This is another one that can play a big role, because (for example) Phineas is the Anglicized version of Phinehas, so maybe back in the day, he was known not as Phineas Smythe as we know him, but as Phinehas Smythson.
All of this is important to know because it can help you come up with ways of differentiating same-named characters without completely renaming them. So, let's say for example your story spans a century, and you have two Phineas Smythes... a grandfather and his grandson. If you dig into the naming conventions and find that the older Phineas Smythe actually went by Phinehas Smythson, that immediately differentiates the two characters. Alternatively, you might learn that a common diminutive in the older Phineas's time and place was to add the affix "-ian" to a male name. So he could have gone by Phinian Smythe while his grandson just goes by Phineas Smythe.
Nicknames in general can be a handy way of differentiating two same-named historical characters, even if you have to take liberties to get there. Maybe the older Phineas Smythe went by Finny. Or maybe he was called "Bear" because of his bear-like size. Or, maybe he didn't but you say he was for the sake of clarity.
When you're not dealing with different generations, another option is to combine people. For example, maybe you have two Phineas Smythes who are minor courtiers of the king, but one Phineas has a bigger role in the story. Can you just combine them into one person instead of having two? Again, because this is historical fiction, it doesn't have to be 100% accurate... it's not non-fiction. You want to be as accurate as possible, and make sure your changes don't change things too much or completely garble someone's understanding of an historical event. But, ultimately, you're writing fiction based on history so you need to prioritize clarity over fact.
I hope something here will help you clarify between these same named characters. ♥

Wollaton Hall, Nottingham
Hi guys!!
I'm sharing Wollaton Hall. This is the 7th building for my English Manors Collection, and I will add many more!
House History: Wollaton Hall was built between 1580 and 1588 for Sir Francis Willoughby and is believed to be designed by the Elizabethan architect, Robert Smythson, who had by then completed Longleat, and was to go on to design Hardwick Hall. The general plan of Wollaton is comparable to these, and was widely adopted for other houses, but the exuberant decoration of Wollaton is distinctive, and it is possible that Willoughby played some part in creating it. The style is an advanced Elizabethan with early Jacobean elements.
Wollaton is a classic prodigy house, "the architectural sensation of its age", though its builder was not a leading courtier and its construction stretched the resources he mainly obtained from coalmining; the original family home was at the bottom of the hill. Though much re-modelled inside, the "startlingly bold" exterior remains largely intact.
The house was unused for about four decades before 1687, following a fire in 1642, and then re-occupied and given the first of several campaigns of re-modelling of the interiors.
The hall remains essentially in its original Elizabethan state, with a "fake hammerbeam" wood ceiling of the 1580s, in fact supported by horizontal beams above, but given large and un-needed hammerbeams for decoration.
In 1881, the house was still owned by the head of the Willoughby family, Digby Willoughby, 9th Baron Middleton, but by then it was "too near the smoke and busy activity of a large manufacturing town... now only removed from the borough by a narrow slip of country", so that the previous head of the family, Henry Willoughby, 8th Baron Middleton, had begun to let the house to tenants and in 1881 it was vacant.
The hall was bought by Nottingham Council in 1925. Estate and personal papers of the Willoughby family were used to create the Middleton collection at the department of Manuscripts and Special Collections, The University of Nottingham. They include the Wollaton Antiphonal and the single manuscript holding the 13th-century post-Arthurian romance Le Roman de Silence.
Nottingham Council opened the hall as a museum in 1926. In 2005 it was closed for a two-year refurbishment and re-opened in April 2007.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This house fits a 50x50 lot and features a great room, a formal dining room and a daily breakfast room, a great library, his and hers bedrooms, 2 royal bedrooms with their formal sitting rooms.
This time I decorated most of the rooms for picture purposes, but as allways, you can make it your own!
Hope you like it.
Be warned: I did not have the floor plan for the 2nd floor. The distribution is based on my own decision.
You will need the usual CC I use: all of Felixandre, The Jim, SYB, Anachrosims, Regal Sims, TGS, The Golden Sanctuary, Cliffou, Dndr recolors, etc.
Please enjoy, comment if you like it and share pictures with me if you use my creations!
Early access: August 15.

"And the PM’s wife attending the event is a nothingburger."
To add to your excellent comment re: PM's wife......
In the UK, the PM's wife is a private citizen. Yes, she shows up for family photos or the occasional meeting of the wives of other heads of state, but being PM's wife is not an official position nor is it a thing. She's not on the campaign trail nor in politics nor involved in her hubby's political life ( we hope!). She can peace out entirely for duration of her spouse's tenure as PM and no one would care.
Our first lady is the Queen Consort.
During The Queen's reign, Philip was the first gentleman, but good  luck getting him to escort a bunch of visiting first lady wives around a garden centre or whatever inane activity they arrange for them on these occasions.
And because Philip wouldn't do it or no one dared ask him, it fell to the PM's wife to pick up the slack if necessary, but even then it depended on the wife because most, if not all of them had/ have outside jobs and could barely fit it in eg Cherie Blair was a lawyer then a judge. Samantha Cameron was the creative director of Smythson. Norma Major was so invisible that I'm surprised to find that she was a lowkey philanthropist as i assumed she was a SAHM choosing to concentrate on that. I don't remember the husbands of Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May or Liz Truss doing it at all.
Bojo's wife is the first to try to make the role a thing and boy was she criticised for it.
The current PM's wife is a SAHM so she's got plenty flexibility in her schedule to do 'first lady' type things, but her appearance is meaningless unless we are told that she's there to represent the PM and if so, the media would have had a hissyfit because she's not an elected representative and we don't allow the PM's spouse to stand in for them. Ever.

Mini-drabble: Benedict, part II, #10
Benedict + If we weren’t in public right now
March 2023 Mini Drabbles Masterpost
Hi lovely!
Thank you so much! 🫶
OK, here is Benedict + If we weren't in public right now. 😁🧡🧡
Behind the cut for filthy language.
Tumblr media
It’s become one of your favourite games. At a ball, a soirée, a dinner, whatever the circumstance, you try not to miss an opportunity. It’s certainly one way to liven up boring events.
Often you’ll wait until the other is listening politely to someone droning on - as many members of the ton are wont to do - and then lean over and whisper in the other’s ear. To any observer, it will look so benign, just a married couple exchanging a quiet word. It’s an unspoken rule that you take turns. Even you’d admit it has gotten a bit out of hand lately. Last week you made him drop his champagne glass - that caused a bit of a scene.
Just as you are doing your best to feign interest in Lady Cowper’s latest boasting at the Smythson ball, he appears by your side.
“If we weren’t in public right now, I'd have my tongue inside your cunt,” his whisper is warm against your ear. Every fibre of your body is suddenly on fire.
“Oh no, my dear”, you bluff loudly as if given some awful news. “Sounds like we had better remedy the situation immediately.” You hastily address the group in front of you. “My apologies, ladies, something has come up that I must attend to; please excuse us.”
Benedict smirks as you turn your backs. “What was that?”
“Change in the rules”, you respond, starting to weave through the throng of attendees, dragging him by the gloved hand.
“I'm listening”, his tone intrigued as you stop short, looking around the room for the nearest exit.
“From now on, you must deliver on what is promised”, you state clearly, spying your target and moving anew.
He chuckles as you continue walking with purpose. “Oh, I intend to. Just wait until we are home”, his voice laced with promise.
You lead him through french doors into the grounds, soon spying the ideal spot—a private section under a pergola drooping heavy with fragrant jasmine.
“Right, husband, it's time to deliver”, you challenge, raising an eyebrow and squeezing the hand you hold.
“Here?!?” he responds incredulously. “This is not what I meant by if we weren’t in public.”
“Then be discreet”, you shrug with a challenging smirk.
His face morphs from surprise into something far more dangerous, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. He moves closer and speaks against your temple. “Oh, I can do that. The challenge, my darling, is, can you keep quiet?”
“Let's find out”, you squeak, running your hands up his arms to his neck, pulling him down for a heated kiss, chasing his tongue with yours.

Well, 250 words is tough haha. Ah well...
