Go-go is a subgenre of funk music with an emphasis on specific rhythmic patterns, and live audience call and response.
Go-go was originated by African-American musicians in Washington, D.C., during the mid-60s to late-70s. Go-go has limited popularity in other areas, but maintains a devoted audience in the Washington metropolitan area as a uniquely regional music style and was named the official music of Washington, D.C., in February 2020.
Performers associated with the development of the style include Rare Essence, EU, Trouble Funk, and singer-guitarist Chuck Brown. Modern artists like Charles "Shorty Corleone" Garris continue the go-go tradition in D.C.
Origins
Although Chuck Brown is known as "the Godfather of Go-Go", go-go is a musical movement that cannot be traced back to one single person, as there were so many bands that flourished during the beginning of this era that they collectively created the sound that is recognized as go-go of today. Artists such as Marvin Gaye, Van McCoy, Billy Stewart, Peaches & Herb, Black Heat,Experience Unlimited (E.U.), Vernon Burch, Sir Joe Quarterman & the Free Soul, the Moments, Ray, Goodman & Brown, True Reflection, the Unifics, Terry Huff & Special Delivery, Act 1, the Dynamic Superiors, Skip Mahoney & the Casuals, the Choice Four, and the Fuzz that played soul music during pre-go-go era.
The term "gogo" (as it applies to a music venue) originated in France in the early 1960s, at the Whiskyagogo nightclub, named after the French title for the British comedy "Whisky Galore!".The club also featured go-go dancers. In January 1964, capitalizing on the emerging popularity of "go-go dancers", the name was licensed to a Los Angeles club, the Whisky a Go Go, and from there the term "go-go" spread nationwideThe Cafe Au Go Go in NYC was also in business during that time, gaining notoriety when Lenny Bruce was arrested there in April 1964. By 1965, "go-go" was a recognized word for a music club, as evidenced by the TV show Hollywood A Go-Go (march 1965-1966), or the song title of that year's hit Going to a Go-Go by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (released November 1965). At a go-go club, dancers could expect to hear the latest top 40 hits, performed by local bands and DJ's. (The French Whiskyagogo had been one of the first venues in the world to replace live music with records selected by a disc jockey.)
In Washington D.C., minor group Wornell Jones and the Young Senators were formed in 1965, beginning a fierce competition with Chuck Brown and Black Heat on the local club circuit. The Young Senators later became known for their song "Jungle" released in 1970 by Innovation Records. Guitarist and bandleader Chuck Brown is widely regarded as "the Godfather of Go-Go".
Chuck Brown was a fixture on Washington and Maryland music scene with his band Los Lotinos as far back as 1966. By the mid-1970s, he had changed the group's name to The Soul Searchers, and developed a laid-back, rhythm-heavy style of funk performed with one song blending into the next (in order to keep people on the dance floor). The beat was based on Grover Washington Jr.'s song "Mr. Magic," though Brown has said in interviews that both he and Washington had adapted the beat from a gospel music beat found in African churches.
Washington, D.C., funk's early national chart action came when Black Heat (the first D.C. go-go band to be signed by a major record label) released their Billboard top 100 hit "No Time To Burn" from their second album on Atlantic Records in 1974. They then toured with such national acts as Earth Wind & Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, Ohio Players, The Commodores, and others. In 1976, James Funk, a young DJ who spun at clubs in between Soul Searchers sets, was inspired (and encouraged by Brown himself) to start a band—called Rare Essence (originally the Young Dynamos)—that played the same kind of music.

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 3
The original Elphaba to those who know, Stephanie J. Block (1972) won her Tony for The Cher Show (2018) where she was, of course, Cher. No stranger to playing icons of the highest order, she made her Broadway debut in 2003, originating the role of Liza Minnelli in The Boy from Oz. In addition to eight Broadway credits, she has an extensive resume of regional, touring, and concert performances across the country, and will make her West End debut in Kiss Me, Kate this summer. She starred in the 2022 Into the Woods revival opposite her real-life husband, Sebastian Arcelus. They met starring in Wicked together on tour.
Brenda Braxton (1956) is a Tony-nominated actress for Smokey Joe's Cafe (1995)with eleven Broadway shows to her name, and she, like many Chicago stars, has been in and out of that show many, many, many times. Lady Braxton has also directed and choreographed various productions of Dreamgirls. Brenda is a major advocate for aging gracefully, and has launched "Act 2...Now What?" a series of seminars for women over fifty transitioning to a post-menopausal life. Her quarterly subscription box, Pause, provides "women of a certain age" with products like tea blends, chocolates, lotions, and yes, vibrators.

"I am once again asking who amongst you will be funding my London trip to see Stephanie J. Block in Kiss Me, Kate."
"So, I actually had most of the recording for Brenda Braxton: Stars Tonight! with Bebe Neuwirth and Allison Williams and was going to show off her "Don Juan" performance, but the video got corrupted. Instead, you get to enjoy a trio perform "My Own Best Friend." You're fucking welcome."

I previously kinda overlooked this song as just another cover, but now that I've listened to the Coasters version more I'm struck by how different it is. Buddy turned it from a typical doo wop song into this kinda tense slinky Lennonesque thing. It's also a great example of how easily he slipped between his upper and lower registers.

Food review: European tour March 2010, part two
March 27th, 2010
Welcome to the second instalment of Team LC! eating their way across Mainland Europe.
In Part one we tried Schnitzel, Moroccan Stew and Strudel. What can the Low Countries and Paris offer us?
Amsterdam
First port of call in Amsterdam was a cafe (not a coffee shop!) called Pasta Tricolore. After touring America with our coffee guru/ tour manager Joe, I have become more fussy about coffee. This place on the recommendation of Tom did pretty good coffee and the food was great. I have quite a sweet tooth when it comes to desserts and so I went for a piece of Tiramisu. It was rich and creamy, you could taste the Marsala and coffee in the sponge fingers. This was a great way to have a break between setting up and soundcheck.
The last time we played the Melkweg I’m sure we didn’t get catering there. This time we ate in the cafe. I went for the Tilapia, a white meaty fish that is quite popular in North America. It came breaded with a lemon and cream sauce. There wasn’t that much of it but it was quite filling. The breadcrumbs were a bit soggy and the sauce was quite thick, the consistency being as thick as mustard for example. It came with some fried potatoes and some crunch vegetables.
The first time I did the Nijmegen Marches I had chips with Mayonnaise. If you’ve ever had Dutch Mayo its very different from Hellmans. It seems to have a little bit of spice in it that makes it moorish. Every time I come to Holland now I have to get some. After the show I snuck off to Febo’s round the corner and got some. It was everything I could ever want in Chips and Mayo! The salty chips covered in a thick layer of creamy Mayo. If you don’t like Mayo, try the peanut sauce, it has a similar taste to curry.
Paris
Paris, the food capital of the world, or so they say. I know French cooking is great but it is a different style to British or say Mexican. Nothing beats a Sunday Roast cooked by your mum.
The meal tonight was in the cafe bar attached to the venue. They had served me a mediocre coffee earlier that day. The food was a vegan curry and then a plate of curried chicken. The chicken was very flavoursome as it was still on the bone. Thighs and legs are under-rated, all those flavours encased in the bone come out during that slow cooking, the meat falling off it faster than melted butter. The curry was good, but the flavouring was very much one of those bulk standard “curry powder” flavours you buy from a supermarket. Some fresh coriander would have been great. They gave us a dessert of what seemed to be a lemon flavoured custard tart; rich but the lemon giving it a refreshing edge.
Hamburg
A kebab shop is not where you go for a meal in Britain. However, this is not the same in Europe. After a 9 hour drive, I found myself in a kebab shop sitting down with a lamb kebab and a stein of beer. This kebab is not what you’ll find in your British take away. The meat was fresh, spicy and had a lot of flavour. It had a nice smokey flavour from being cooked over coals rather than on a griddle. It came with a flat bread and a salad. More importantly, I got to enjoy it on a plate and not out of a polystyrene box.
The following night, the venue got us take away from an Italian. It was the worst pizza I’ve had in a long time. The base was burnt with holes in it. The sausage on the top was so salty that you couldn’t taste anything else. A grease fest!
Brussels
The Botanique has always done good food, so we were looking forward to ending the tour here. Time meant that we ended up eating afterwards. We had ordered before we had gone on thinking that it would be waiting for us when we came off. Due to this I had opted for the chicken and chips rather than the fish. When we got to the cafe they hadn’t even cooked it, too late to change my order though. When it arrived it was basically just a chicken breast grilled with some chips and salad. The breast was a bit dry and it could have done with some sort of flavourings. But I was hungry. We’ve had better, perhaps it us wanting to eat afterwards that annoyed them?
A few prizes
Best Meal – The kebab in Hamburg
Worst Meal – The pizza in Hamburg
Best Services – Marche – found widely in Germany
Worst Services – Shell Garages in Holland and Belgium
