This is a story about a book that changed my life.

It's also about how amazing libraries and authors and people who care about sharing cool things with curious kids are. Also, fish (especially fish). It's kind of different than what I usually post but it's been bouncing around in my head basically since I started this blog so here you go, I hope you like it. This is the reason I love coelacanths so much, and why I think everyone should know about how amazing they are.

When I was little, I loved going to the library. My little brother and I would pick out way too many books and the librarians always had to come over to override the 30 book limit at the checkout stand (they pretty much knew us on sight and were ready to override it as soon as we started heading over to check out). After we finished getting our library books, our mom also let us look through the free pile that was in the foyer on the way out. It was mostly old library books that the librarians just needed to clean out, but there were a lot of books that people brought when they cleaned out their personal collections too (especially teachers, and there were a bunch of books with old school library stamps inside). The free pile didn't usually have a lot of things that interested me, but one day when I was poking through it I found a book called Fossil Fish Found Alive: Discovering the Coelacanth, by Sally M. Walker.

I loved it. I had never even heard of coelacanths before, but this book fascinated me. It told the story of an incredible animal, long thought to be extinct, that had somehow survived for millions of years! It was nothing like any fish I had ever learned about before. I already had a casual interest in marine biology that I can thank PBS Kids and Wild Kratts for (particularly their episode on sperm whales and giant squid, I loved that episode), but this book took it to a new level. I wanted to be a marine biologist so I could learn more about coelacanths.

Like a lot of things when you're 7, that was a phase. Unlike a lot of phases, this one I came back to. After taking a break from my dreams of being a marine biologist to experience the hell that is middle school, one day I pulled a book off my shelf. I hadn't read it in a while. When I picked it up again, I remembered how incredible this animal was, and how much it had inspired me when I was younger, and those thoughts of becoming a marine biologist started to return. I'm in college now studying marine science, and I brought the book with me to school, where it sits next to two other science books that have inspired me (My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees by Jane Goodall and The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson).

Earlier this year, I was thinking about how much this one book had changed my life and I wondered if I could find Ms. Walker and thank her. I knew she had many other science books for younger audiences, and even another book about coelacanths, so I was sure she had a website of some kind, and I was right. So I found her contact page and wrote her an email explaining the impact her book had had on my life, and thanking her for it. And to my surprise, she responded! She was very kind and we sent a few emails back and forth. She gave me some excellent advice and even told me about some of the people she contacted while researching her book, including Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer herself, the person who rediscovered the coelacanth when it was thought to be extinct! I'll never forget how she took the time to respond to me and how encouraging she was.

But Ms. Walker isn't the only one I have to thank for pointing me toward the path I'm on right now. If I hadn't already loved reading, if I hadn't seen any show or video to make me interested in marine biology, if the library didn't have a pile of books for anyone to take home, if I had lost that book during one of our many moves as a kid, I don't know what I'd be doing right now. There were a lot of things that happened to make it so that I found this book, but I'm glad for every single one of them. They led to me learning about an incredible animal and changed the course of my life. And now, I love coelacanths.

First of all. I don't have a favorite... no way. the fact that smileys can be so different and unique. different styles, physical and digital, pixel or HD, transparent or jpg or gif!

I def have to say a "Yeah I liek that guy" would be: Perfectly a circle or tempting to be (thinking about the smiley balloon i saw today), Yellow, and an even smile!

But the fact that smileys can be just 1 or none of these things are awesome. I do have to say the more smileys in 1 place the better. like my first set of stickers (in a while) were these neon smiley faces. They're awesome. I also have these rainbow holo graphic smileys that i got for like 1 dollar w/ 10 sheets.

I also love its connection to school, I struggled a lot as a young student so whenever i got a smiley 100! (with dots and a curved underline) It made my day!!

It makes me really sad to know the story of the smileys creator, or atleast how someone ELSE copywrited it before him, and thats a HUGE brand now.

Its how we have so many smiley stuff, and i think the overstaturation is why it died out so much (and the strong hold on the copy write). But "Messed up" smileys are still everywhere! (not my faves but id be lying if i said i dont have a ew in my room)

I just enjoy how cheep/easy it is to make. My bf found these awesome H&M Smiley pants in a thift store recently and i adore it! And whenever I go to a dollar store theirs always atleast guy smileying at me.

I do have to say I also enjoy emoticons (the original), skype (TOP TIER), and emojis! tho the inconsistency in styles can get me :( i hate that we all cant see the same emoji! Also samsungs old ones were my FAVORITEEEE

immediately i saw the connections between the story of l'mannes and l'manburg like bee i see what you did there (it caused much screaming), and the lesson for Tomys that Phil mentioned is still an enigma to me but wow the two brothers thing (aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)

then the bandits. the contract. 'make it look natural', they were after Tomys, whoa who could it be???? Niki is very sus, especially in how the little flashback thing she seemed off in some way. 'Niki froze, her fingers pushing into the soft skin of her cheeks', Niki do you know something about this. Your tone was all funky. She definitely knew about this before Wilbur told her but doesn't like how Wilbur is going. Longtime friendship = regrets on her part for this whole thing going down. Niki also doesn't like Tomys at all, and expressed her dislike of him being king at all. Quackity isn't the kind of guy to do something like this, being all words and money, but he did mention something about being careful on the old mountain roads and made kind of a big deal about it. Actually the money part might have something to do with this, another point on Quackity doing this. The others in the court are otherwise having no evidence for.

hmm who could it be who could it be... it seems the main suspects people are focusing on are niki and quackity. let me give some counter points for both of them though

(now this isn't me saying neither of them hired the bandits. I'm not giving you the answer lol, I'm just pointing out flaws in the theories)

keep in mind, wilbur is niki's best friend. the closest thing to family she's ever had. do you really think she would go so far as to get him killed just to take down tommy? keep in mind, tommy has only been at the palace for a month or so. do you think her and wilbur's entire friendship that they've had since they were children has gone that downhill that fast?

now for quackity, yes he has the means, but do you think he'd go that far? he's not the type to do this like you pointed out. and again, he's close with wilbur as well. they've all been friends since they were children. do you really think he'd be willing to sacrifice one of his childhood friends just to take tommy out?

it could very well be one of them. or it might be someone else entirely. you guys are going to have to keep guessing ;)

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

i think he loves getting little key chains, or mini figures when he goes out. but he does it so often that he’s started spending too much money on it, and amassing too many of them.. and after a certain point, megumi and nobara had to intervene and monitor his purchasing habits.

Guys. Guys. I'm reading the article of a man who invented the smiley face :-) written in 2002, and the story of it is soo.... I'll just say, it'll give you SUCH A FRESH LOOK on tone indicators, lol. They found the reeeaaaly old posts discussing how to mark posts as jokes, which you can read here, and they're HILARIOUS. I almost want to attacj screenshots, but i realize that if i'll try to take out the funniest bits, i'm just gonna show y'all the whole conversation 😭😭 So just trust me, read it. It starts with discussions of hypothetical scenarios like how would birds sound if they inhaled helium and how would a lit candle and a drop of mercury behave in a falling elevator, already hooks you in. those men from 1982 must've been SO BORED. Some people proceed to misinterpret jokes as being serious, joke about misinterpreting things as being serious, and beinf sarcastic in ways that NOBODY knows who's being serious or not anymore. Discussion arises on how they should mark their messages as jokes. Others instantly start using the proposed indicators as part of the joke.

Jokes continue as others join in and suggest adding more and more ridiculous markers for jokes and poking fun of one another. Over the next few days, smileys actually get usedm new ones get created, and they spread out.

Then this here is an updated as of 2021 history of smiley :-) it goes into a little more detail on how the intrent evolved, as well as how it looked and functioned in 1982 (or well. the precursor to the internet). He also talks about how that invention personally affected his life. It's very sweet and he talks about what he thinks made emoticons so popular, as well as his opinions on modern emojis - which i share in some ways :D

All in all, just an interesting read i really wanted to share with you :) Man does learning history give some new perspectives, doesn;t it?? Who would've thought???

I just had a short dream that my Oc Zable Fable realm jumped into a random comic book world but it was like a cartoon episode where it was like in the middle of it.

It was Captain Smiley stressing out about Star missing and basically stressing out about it.

Zable Fable is like "Don't worry we got this."

While she looked at him lovingly then kissing him then both were making out.

Then my alarm woke me up.

I ship them now since this is another Zable.

My guess was from my fake pitch for a sequel for Comic Jumper.

I wish my artwork was good.

I really want to know Captain Smiley's origin story.

The following is a rejected script from an early season of Breaking Bad.

INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - DAY

Saul Goodman, a charismatic lawyer, walks down the aisles of a convenience store with a shopping basket. He glances at various items on display, looking for string cheese and marmalade.

SAUL (absent-mindedly) String cheese, string cheese... where are you hiding?

Saul notices MIKE, a tough-looking man, pushing a trolley filled with numerous bags of salt. He seems deep in conversation with the LEMON SELLER, an unsuspecting vendor.

SAUL (whispering to himself) Oh no, not him. Not here.

Sweat beads on Saul's forehead, panic evident on his face. He carefully places the string cheese and marmalade in his basket, visibly anxious.

LEMON SELLER (adamant) No, no, you'll want the freshest batch, Mike. Trust me, it's worth the wait.

Saul accidentally knocks over his basket, causing the string cheese and marmalade to spill on the floor.

SAUL (startled) Oops! Clumsy me!

Saul quickly darts out of the store, leaving the mess behind. He rushes towards his car parked outside, looking back occasionally to ensure Mike doesn't notice him.

INT. SAUL'S CAR - CONTINUOUS

Saul fumbles with his car keys, his hands trembling. PANTING, he finally unlocks the car door and jumps inside.

SAUL (whispering) Okay, shh, calm down, Saul. Just get out of here.

Just as Saul prepares to start the engine, his phone buzzes, indicating a new text message. He picks it up, revealing a text from MIKE. The message contains only a smiley emoticon. Panic rushes back to Saul's face, beads of sweat reappearing.

SAUL (stuttering) What... what the hell?

INT. CONVENIENCE STORE - CONTINUOUS

Mike stands by the checkout counter, observing Saul fleeing. He smirks and subtly taps his phone, sending the text message to Saul.

LEMON SELLER (confused) You know that guy, Mike?

Mike nods, his expression cryptic.

MIKE (whispering) Oh yeah, we've got some unfinished business.

Mike turns away, picking up a bag of inferior lemons. The Lemon Seller watches him, unaware of Saul's impending danger.

FADE OUT.
