Random Train Thoughts ~ Deer and Rabbits

It is really weird not knowing the language.  In all of the other countries I’ve visited so far I can usually figure out what the signs say, or how to pronounce something.  Not so in Hungary, where the language is completely foreign to me, as well as the written language.  No matter how hard I try to “figure things out” on my own.  Most things in our hotel are written in English as well, and while English is spoken in some areas, the majority of people do not speak English.

The Hungarian countryside is much greener than the French/German countryside.

I have seen many windmills in Europe. Huge structures creating/storing energy.

So far I can say I have no regrets.  I am taking every opportunity I can as it presents itself.  I never want to say “I wish I would have _____”

The Hungarian currency is the Forint, and feels like play money.  We divide the bill by 200 to find what it would be in US dollars.  Yesterday a bottle of wine cost 2000 Forint, or $10 on the cruise. 

I am currently on the train stopped at the Györ station.

Many drinks in Europe come in glass bottles, not plastic or aluminum cans

The dirt here is dark, almost a black color, in contrast to the sandy brown or red color of the dirt in the United States.

I enjoy travelling alone, making my own decisions and not consulting anyone.

The rabbits here are very large.  I would say 5X as large as ours in the United States.  Otherwise they look the same as a wild brown rabbit with a cottontail. Maybe even larger.  I thought they were small deer the first time I saw them.  They also group together to eat in the fields (warrens).

I also see small deer, which look like big rabbits J They are rounder with shorter necks and legs than the deer in the United States.

Moss grows all over Europe and can be found on houses, rooftops, walls, and streets.

Mistletoe, or something similar, seems to have taken over the trees here.  They look like Dr. Seuss Trees. 

They have someone check your train ticket frequently while on the train.  I don’t think they get many Euroail pass holders, because they always look at my ticket in a quizzical way, pretend to read it, then hand it back.

I am amazed at the ability of these cities to rebuild after WWII.  I keep hearing figures like 60% or 80% of their cities were destroyed due to bombing, yet they have obviously rebuilt and did a good job at renovating as well
