allow me to provide Over Explanation for this supposedly simple yes/no answer. technically, yes! however

the au is structured into four main chunks - Acts, if you will. we've got Act One, which is the story i've shared bits and pieces of with you all. it's the main body of the au, the "in the dark" part. the Only romantic relationship progression / development (beyond little blink-and-you'll-miss-it hints) is FranklyDear.

Act Two begins with Sally waking up, and there's a whole... thing for that, where everything falls apart in an entirely new and way more sad way! Act Three and Four are the "aftermath" of the au - in a sense.

like - if i were to write a fic, the main one would be Act One + (maybe) Two, though that one might need it's own - shorter - fic. then Act Four would be the immediate squeakual. Act Three could be just an extra fun addition, cause it wouldn't be strictly necessary or overtly Vital due to Act Four's needs. it's more of a... uh... ~Behind the Scenes~ thing.

ALL THIS TO SAY! Popstar would become a thing either in Act Two or Act Three, but Laughingstock would solidify well into Act Four.

((Growing up in a Syndicate was not easy. Times she cried or wanted to cry, she was told to suck it up and move on before she was given a real reason to cry. She was pushed around by older members and verbally and sometimes physically abused to force her to grow thicker skin due to the nature of her future jobs. Other female members also found excuses to be 'threatened' by Margaret's presence in the Syndicate and only contributed to the young girl's suffering. The late Syndicate leader, Rollo, allowed this to "teach Margaret what the real world is like."

There were times Margaret attempted to fight back with a face full of tears, only to be pushed around and kicked until she inevitably fled.

Leo personally took Margaret under his wing to train her and save her from being used as the Syndicate’s local doormat. She hated it, hated not being able to cry when she wanted to and hated having to fight others to earn any respect. It was the very thing her parents encouraged when she was feeling hurt. And while Leo didn’t discourage crying like the other syndicate members did, he would teach her how to reinforce herself. He was her counselor, her trainer, and also her very best friend. To her, Leo was the strong father figure she needed to stabilize herself. While he was stern, he also provided wisdom and advice that allowed her to navigate the hell of this Syndicate in which she was trapped.

From then on, she began showing her grit. She would eat the childish teasing and triggering prods and eventually earn a mouth that would bite back three times harder. Of course, being plain spiteful would have only earned her more bruises, so Leo taught her how to spin comebacks with humor to save her from at least most beatdowns. It would be her way of weaponizing words to stab back at her aggressors but also humiliate them in front of others. This made her somewhat liked by other members, though she refused to let any of them in her heart. They were still accomplices in the murder of her parents at the end of the day.

What was the result of this as the years went on? While she grew up to be Leo's right hand, a man already a high-ranking Syndicate member, Margaret grew up cynical. Always suspicious of others and their intentions until proven otherwise. Sometimes, she struggles with her old naivety to have some hope in others, but it takes some force to shove it back down when she does not know someone. This also means she's learned to maintain a hardened shell around men (since the syndicate comprised mostly male members). Women also get the hardened shell treatment. However, she's more likely to loosen up around women who are softer in nature.

Deep down, Margaret hates to front as this rough around-the-edges, tough woman. She would give anything to find a moment to be unapologetically vulnerable without being picked on or teased for being soft for even a moment. But she has to keep up the walls to protect her heart.))
