@slowfactory fixed it for New York Times
Mainstream media's use of language to diminish the struggle of Palestinians and downplay the war crimes committed by colonial apartheid Israel. Say the word: GENOCIDE. Who commits the genocide? ISRAEL.
We're only gonna stop saying Free Palestine if Palestine is finally free 🇵🇸

!PRINTS FOR PALESTIN!ANS!
I’m selling glossy A5 prints of my Palestinian Plants artwork to raise money for medical staff and aid in Gaza. I’m printing them on demand so there is no limit to how many can be sold.
All proceeds (excluding shipping cost) from will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians. You can read about their work here www.map.org.uk
I’m selling on my bigcartel store HERE , and not on Etsy (so etsy doesn’t profit from this) You can also just message me directly to purchase a print.
I will offer tracked shipping as default, but if you want far cheaper UNtracked shipping, please message me on instagram @katherinehillierart or through the bigcartel store.
As you probably already know, the current onslaught upon Gaza has killed at least 40,000 people, but without the infrastructure to keep track of deaths, and with so many 1000s buried under rubble, it is likely far more. Children make up nearly half of the Gazan population and are targeted by snipers almost as much as aid workers and medical staff. Rich western nations like the USA and the UK have suspended or ended aid to Gaza and also the West Bank. The ground attack on the Rafah refugee camps has brought a new level of horror. The situation is beyond bleak.
On social media, you can find out more by following…
@slowfactory
@humanitiproject
@jewishvoiceforpeace
@palestinestudies
@visualizing_palestine
@bdsnationalcommittee
The print features...
-red poppies; these hardy wildflowers are iconic of the Palestinian countryside.
-watermelon has become a global symbol of the struggle against apartheid, thanks its feature in South African resistance movements.
-and olives. Olive trees once covered vast stretches of Palestine, producing some of the world's finest olive oil. Some olive trees stood for over five thousand years, being cared for by generations of the same family. The destruction of these olive groves has been a tool of the occupation since 1947.
Some icons that nearly made it into the illustration
-the Palestinian sunbird
-the Palestinian crocodile
-Jaffa oranges
-za'atar thyme
The original artwork is also for sale, for £150 (about $190USD). Please contact me to make the purchase. This money will also go to MAP.

Screen shots from Fashion and Prison Labor, a lecture presented by Teju Adisa-Ferrar
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Sustainability encompasses more than materials, it is also about working conditions, agency and dignity. It's about being able to provide for future generations without violence or oppressive hierarchies."
"The criminalization of poverty is why we have so many incarcerated peoples...Poverty is not sustainable. Poverty is systematic."
Today's lecture by Teju Adisa-Ferrar was incredible. She provided an overview of prison labor history in the US and how it impacts the products we use today. I grabbed some screen shots of points of her presentation that stood out to me. The government literally incentivizes the use of prison labor and gives companies who use it a $2,400 tax credit for every inmate them employ.
This lecture is a part of Slow Factory's free Fashion and Sustainability lecture series. Lectures are presented live every Friday at noon EST until the end of the semester (May).

SUSTAINABILITY IN FASHION - ‘Applying sustainable principles to the fashion industry means rethinking the lifecycle of clothes, bags and shoes from their creation, materials sourcing and product development to their transport, sale, reuse, recycling and ultimate disposal. The objective is to minimise waste and the reduction or reversal of their negative impact on the environment’. - ‘We need to change the way we think about sustainable fashion’ says activist Céline Semaan (@celinecelines) in an interview with iD magazine (@i_d). - Image : Thebe Magugu (@thebemagugu) from FacultyPress zine (@facultypress) featuring Lera Mojaki (@lera_mojaki) - #sustainablefashion #sustainability #thebemagugu #fashion #africanfashion #manjujournal #slowfactory https://www.instagram.com/p/CCl26lggOzQ/?igshid=w81lok5nryjo

Fashion & Resistance (a part of Slow Factory's lecture series).
Some notes from Korina Emmerich’s lecture on Fashion & Resistance, part of Slow Factory’s Fashion & Sustainability lecture series:
- “I don’t put anything online for sale that can’t be worn by everyone”, in response to people being afraid of appropriating when wearing indigenous-related/made clothing. Also she says that clothing can be a conversation starter: share where and who made your clothing if asked or questioned about it.
- She says that ally ship has to be deserved/earned and makes the example of someone coming into your home and saying they are going to work for you but, but they have no skills, why would you want them to work for you? In the same way, you have demonstrate the skills and competency you have in understanding/resisting in order to be an ally.
- she also says: “I don’t know why I have to be considered an activist when I am fighting for basic human rights.” And also the people fighting against the Dakota Pipeline and other pipelines, are not protestors but protectors. I like and value this distinction.

I shared these photos on our Twitter & Instagram yesterday, and I’m sharing them here with the full story as an in-under-the-wire Sunday-not-selfie-but-very-self-indulgent.
I wasn’t sure I could go to the march considering the unpredictable schedule and disposition of eight-week-old Star Baby, but I didn’t want to go alone, either. I wasn’t going to make a poster, until I realized the morning of that I had rainbow holographic poster letters and a basement full of cardboard, including some already spray painted (from this project). I was hoping to join up with the Women in Natural Science group from @amnhnyc, but we ended up getting to Grand Central Terminal way after they were scheduled to march. Nevertheless, I decided my signs would represent science - not necessarily the most pressing cause considering the violence and oppression faced by women (especially women of color, LGBTQIA women, and disabled women, for example) for their inherent identity, not just their profession, but still, science is something I can contribute.
“Science is Real” was inspired by They Might Be Giants, and apparently isn’t taken as a given by the people now in charge of our country despite it crucial importance for climate change, vaccinations, energy, education, and more. “Scientists Grab Back” is a nod to #astroSH, or the more visible discussion of harassment in the astronomy research community lead by some of my brave colleagues. Both sides of the sign garnered positive responses, even though I wasn’t as clever as fellow astronomer Dr. Aki Roberge who marched in DC!
And since this is a fashion blog, I’m wearing the Tarantula nebula scarf from @theslowfactory-blog and #ThatOtherShirt aka STEM: Women are all over It shirt, and a North Face galaxy jacket.
Thanks to my husband for taking the photos, Star Baby for sleeping soundly, and you, dear readers for listening to my story, I hope you all have a chance to make your own and share it with the Universe.
–Emily
