This comic took a bit longer to make than expected,😅 but its finally here! As soon as I made this post, the first thing that came to mind was an angsty follow up comic. There's no way Emmet could go through all that stress and be 100% recovered the moment Ingo came back..

When it comes to the slime rancher AU, I don't actually have any ideas for how the story could progress any further into angst... all I have are goofy ideas XD perhaps its for the best! Slime rancher is a light hearted and fun game.. and this poor trio has suffered enough.. so I guess until further notice, the smile rancher AU will be a liiiittle more light hearted in future posts.. <XDD

Hypothetical Slime Rancher/Four Swords AU Notes

Add this onto the pile of creative sparks I've had that will probably die out after a short while. Unmedicated ADHD is a helluva detriment. If only my thoughts were drier, these fires might last longer.

+ All the Colors live on the same ranch in the Dry Reef. It started as a temporary cohabitation agreement that just became permanent as they all spent time around each other. (The original idea would have been to move out as more ranches were built.)

+ Vio was the first of the Colors to move there early on in the 7Zee Corporation's start-up, potentially one of the first residents of the Far Far Range in general, not that he kept up with that. His reasoning for moving out there is morally dubious, but slimes are fair game for the most part to experiment on. Unlike humans.

+ Shadow was the next to show up, and with him came his live-streaming gig. Seeing as there are no other streamers there, his viewer base dramatically increased as people back on Earth tuned in. 7Zee allows him to continue his activities so long as he does it safely, and doesn't give them a bad rep.

+ Red was next, though his reasoning for moving there is a mystery. He appeared on Shadow's streams quite a bit early on as they explored what the range had to offer together. They also teamed up a lot to pester Vio. The three of them were very close by the time Green and Blue showed up.

+ Speaking of Green and Blue, they showed up together, though they have no relation to each other. Green was simply seeking out adventure in a new frontier, whereas Blue's family sent him there in a bid to curve his anger issues. They quickly took over co-leader roles as it became apparent the other three were horribly danger-prone with no self-preservation instincts.

More notes below the break.

+ Vio and Red explored the Glass Desert together before Green and Blue arrived. Shadow opted out on account of the sun being too much, but ended up regretting it after Red told him about the wonky fire anomaly that would have been totally rad to catch on stream.

+ Each of the Colors cultivated their own areas on the ranch for their own uses, much like the actual game's ranch. Red uses the original land they were given for his slime endeavors, meanwhile Green grew a small pocket of woodland akin to the Moss Blanket to the left of that, and Blue built a port/dock just off the back end of that forest. Shadow carved a space into the mountain to the right of the ranch for his slime shenanigans, which connects haphazardly to Vio's lab area behind the house.

+ Green is in charge of managing the Ranch Exchange requests and, in rare instances, issuing their own. He keeps track of where the others are going, when they think they'll be back, and if he should head out to look for them (in the instance they got knocked out). Unspoken leader of the group. Manages their supplies.

+ Blue is the second in command, despite denying for the longest time that he cared at all what happened to the others. He rarely leaves the ranch, but instead manages the slime corals of everyone on top of his own (especially if they'll be gone for a bit). He keeps their supplies in order and keeps everyone from starving (it's a miracle Red, Vio, and Shadow lasted as long as they did on the diets they all had).

+ Red is the errand boy and general explorer of the range. He heads out multiple times a day to gather whatever supplies the ranch might be lacking in that they can't grow or otherwise acquire. He's also the one who places Vio's gadgets in the other parts of the map and runs back for the materials whenever they expire. He knows all the shortcuts and has upgraded his vac all the way.

+ Vio is the go-to for any questions about the range, seeing as he's been there the longest. He may or may not know more information than the Slimepedia at this point, though he's often distracted with his non-specific research to be very coherent. Doesn't leave the ranch often, but if he does, it's usually to explore the Glass Desert further. Next in charge after Green and Blue.

+ Shadow is often too wrapped up in his streaming stuff to help with anything specific on the ranch, but that's okay, at some point 7Zee started to pay him for all the (at the time) free promotion he garners. The others feature frequently on his streams and it usually gives them a chance to just relax. Except it's well known to his chat that approaching Vio might get Shadow chucked into the Slime Sea for "science purposes". It's happened 13 times now.

+ Overexposure to certain slimes has caused some oddities to occur in some of the Color's appearances. Red's eyes have permanent swirls in them due to how often boom slimes have exploded on him. Green's sclera are now a very unnaturally bright yellow that glow in the dark due to rad slime radiation. Vio's whole body occasionally glitches from quantum slime shenanigans, though he regulates it through means the others are not allowed to know (which involves his bracelets periodically stabbing him to stabilize his form), so now only his irises have the flickering effect. Lots of eye issues.

+ It wouldn't be a Casual-Praxis AU without ships, so just know this one I wanted to try my hand at a giant group relationship. Everyone is together. :) It didn't happen immediately, but it's a large part of why no one ever tried to move out of the cohabitation situation.

So, these two pages from chapter 88 have been causing a lot of confusion due to inconsistent translations, and I've decided to set the record straight as best I can with the knowledge at my disposal.

Starting with the first page, this is where Mitsuki says that he and Eida are similar. In the next panel, he says: 「どうしてカワキを好きなのか。。。その理由が自分で分からない」

This is the first point where fan translations and the official VIZ translation differ. Fans generally seemed to agree that he's saying he doesn't understand why Eida loves Kawaki, while the official version has him say that he doesn't understand why he himself loves Kawaki.

And unfortunately, both of those are understandable translations. The first part of the sentence contains no indication of whether he's talking about himself or Eida; the most literal translation I can do is "Why is Kawaki loved... that reason, [I/you] don't understand."

The reason it's "I/you" is because he uses the word 自分 (jibun), which depending on context, can be equivalent to either "my" or "your." It's not really the same deal as 僕 (boku), Mitsuki's primary first-person indicator, which makes it extremely annoying to translate.

So, which is it? Well, as vague as it is, my best guess is actually based on the dialogue of the second page.

Thankfully, this one is much easier to answer. In the largest panel, Eida says: 「あたし達。。。超恋バナしてるね」

The conversation around this line seemed to be, "she clearly said they're talking about romantic love!" "No, she's just using a slang term akin to 'girl talk,' so she only means that they're bonding!" And guess what? They're both right!

I consulted a friend of mine who speaks Japanese natively on Eida's word choice, and he said that while "girl talk" is closer on the basis of it being a casual/slang term, it's gender-neutral and is more about people "talking about their love."

In other words, "we're both chatting about love" or "we're having a love talk" would probably be the most accurate ways to translate it.

At this point, I want to bring attention to Daemon and Mitsuki's reactions to what Eida just said:

Daemon is flabbergasted, only able to say "Huh...?" while Mitsuki blushes for a second, then turns away and says "Well... I guess it didn't matter."

What exactly would Daemon be surprised about, if not the implication that Mitsuki loves someone who isn't Eida (and a guy, no less)? Why would he be showing that surprise now, instead of when Mitsuki allegedly announced that he loved Kawaki a few pages ago?

Likewise, while Mitsuki blushing around Eida isn't unusual, he actually spent the vast majority of this conversation remarkably composed. He only blushed for a single panel when he first noticed Eida was in the area, so having it come back after he's basically called out for being in love (real love, as it was already established that they both knew his feelings for Eida are fabricated) is a very deliberate choice.

While Mitsuki doesn't always emote very much, we can assume he was taken a little off-guard here - and again, if he was already confident enough in his love for Kawaki, why this reaction? Why all the talk before now about how he wasn't sure he'd know what romance felt like without Eida's ability?

The only conclusion I can make is that, in the first page, he's not saying "I don't know why I love Kawaki" like in the VIZ translation. It's much more likely that he's saying "I don't know why you love Kawaki." That's the only way that Mitsuki's feelings for Kawaki can be treated as a reveal, to both Daemon and himself.

And given that his love for Kawaki stems from his love for Boruto, due to the memory swap... yeah, if his side of Mitsuboru wasn't canon before, I think it's safe to say that it is now. Now excuse me while I go be extremely sane and normal about this information

I really admire those submas artists that are able to draw Ingo and Emmet clearly expressing different emotions while still keeping their signature frown/smile. Bonus points to the ones who even keep their half lidded eyes! I don't know how you guys do it <XDD

I tried experimenting with the boys expressions and tried to keep their smile/frown.. but man, its tough for me. I mean, the mouth is literally and figuratively half the expression! XD I guess their expressiveness will come mostly from their eyes..? Oh well, I just gotta experiment a little more I guess XDD

Also the last expression for Ingo's page was going to be him laughing. But I couldn't make him laugh + frown without looking like a complete maniac 🤣🤣 So I kind'a turned it into a cute headcannon. The only time Ingo gets a big genuine smile plastered on his face is when he laughs. And wouldn't you know it, Emmet laughs with the same smile. :}

The wind from the sea felt nice on his face. After so many years spent as nothing more than mud and slime, it was nice to feel. Feel anything. Freedom, independence, revenge. His plan to create order and heal the world would come to fruition. Being stuck on a ship with these men was worth that price. They were like bugs. If he wanted to, he could squash them and feel nothing. Though there was one who spoke to him kindly as a mentor would, and there was the ever so slight stirring of emotions he presumed were long dead. The old man was enough to make him question what it was he desired. Did he want to be good? Did he want a fresh start? What about his plans? The desire for order was there, the want to heal the world and bring peace, but would he get that through evil, through deceit and violence? Or could that be obtained another way? He continued to stare over the vast ocean as the wheels in his head turned, and he waged a war inside himself.

"It's beautiful, is it not?" A voice broke through the silence of the night.

He turned sharply, greeted by the image of a young woman. You were beautiful. He noticed it right away. Never had he looked at a human and thought they were beautiful. The thought was usually reserved for elves, but you were different. He could tell just by looking. You were soft, gentle, pure. There was a light to you that permeated all of your features.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to intrude. We have more food tonight than expected, and you had been on your own so long before finding us. I supposed you might be hungry." You held up a bowl for him, which he accepted with a nod.

"Thank you. I don't think we've been introduced. I'm Halbrand."

You smiled softly back at him, giving him your name and taking a few small steps towards him. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

He watched you. It was curious. Everyone here was gruff and rude, not wanting to help a stranger, yet you brought him a bowl of soup instead of keeping it for yourself. He watched as you looked up at the stars and how they were reflected back in your eyes. Humans didn't often intrigue him, but you did.

He leaned back against the railing of the boat with his arms crossed, but before he could speak to ask his question, you spoke.

"The stars are beautiful, aren't they? The light against the immense darkness. It reminds us that there is light in all things. Even in the darkest of times, there is hope."

"Your people were just slaughtered by orcs. You're on the run. Hope in the stars seems pretty useless." His eyes watched you with keen interest.

"Hope is never useless. Without it, all is lost." The earnestness in your voice further fueled his curiosity.

"And what do you hope for in times like this?"

"A new start. A place to start fresh..."

"Yes," he interrupted, "That is what all hope for, but what do you hope a new place or fresh start will do? What do you want from it?"

"I want a safe place to lay my head. I want to live without shame. I want fresh air and to grow my food and I want music and I want laughter. I want to drink tea with my friends. I want to love and feel the wind on my face. I want happiness. I want peace." You smiled and closed your eyes as you pictured this serene future.

He watched you, his brows furrowed. You were odd, but he wasn't sure if that was a bad thing as of yet.

"You have a lot of this hope. It's almost oozing out of you. I can almost taste it." He took a step towards you. "As if there is no evil out there."

"There is evil, yes, but there is good. Do we despair because there is evil or have hope because there is good? I do not think there is truly anything that is created evil. Evil is only when the good is taken from someone, and if you're able to take it, then it's able to be taken back." Your eyes had opened, and you looked up at him.

"I doubt you'd believe that if you knew the evil I'd done."

"Thousands of years ago, the people of the southlands sided with Morgoth. Our ancestors fought alongside the most evil being to ever exist. Most would say that the things our people did were deplorable and worthy of the worst shame. But I look upon my home, I look upon the people I have grown with, and I do not see evil. The people here, I am but a stranger to them. I have yet to meet most of them, but they took me in, as they did you. If my ancestors were evil, they could not have created such good."

“Whatever evil you did, it can be forgiven. You can do good, be good.” You moved closer to him, placing a gentle hand on his arm. The feeling brought a sense of warmth that he had not felt since before he joined Morgoth, when he went by a different name. His eyes traveled down to where your hand rested, and you dropped it back to your side. He'd found himself missing the feeling.

"Your ancestors did do evil, though. They did plenty of evil things. Just as I have."

"Did they do evil out of the desire to be evil? Or did they do evil to protect those they loved? Were they born that way, destined to be only evil? Were you made evil? Or was it thrust upon you in a moment of hopelessness? Does every being have the capability to do both good and evil?"

He was left stunned at what you said, it took longer than usual for him to come up with a response. He wet his lips, looking over the ocean for a moment before looking at you once more. Your hair was gently blowing in the breeze of the ocean and he found the sight captivating. His intuition told him you were telling the truth, that you believed the words you were saying with your whole being. How could that be? There had to be some darkness that motivated you, that tainted your soul.

Everyone had darkness.

His mind played over the interaction long after it had happened. He wanted to feel that warmth again. You were a puzzle, a mystery. He would not know peace until he figured out what darkness was inside you because surely there had to be something. It was one of the many things that plagued his mind late at night. He watched as you slept peacefully. You were rows and rows down from him, but he could zoom in on your form. He watched your chest rise and fall, the calm of your features. You were a mystery that he had to solve.

This was what was on his mind when the worm attacked. He needed to know you. Even now, he watched as you attempted to help an elderly woman stuck under a beam instead of rushing to safety yourself. He couldn't bring himself to save the old man, but his fingers wrapped around the relic, and as water rushed the ship, he lept over and shielded your body with his.

He couldn't let you die. He had to understand you, to know you, to find out what motivated you, he would find your inner darkness.

And if he couldn't, he'd ruin you instead.
