This is it! The last chapter! It still feels so strange to think that this really is the last one.
###
Each day grew longer than the last and the sun shone a little stronger, burning off morning spring clouds. Dylan made good on his promise to visit unannounced one afternoon. He showed up with a firm knock on the door and a greeting loud enough to wake me the rest of the way up. For hours he lingered in the kitchen, half occupied with putting the finishing touches on the egg salad sandwiches Fallon sent him along with but more occupied with filling me in on everything and anything. Tea in hand I barely spoke as the sun made its way down the sky, casting long shadows across the street outside and dimming the light through the windows all while Dylan replaced the usual quiet of the day. It was nice though, hearing someone else’s voice even if I did end up forgetting details and names in his stories.
The vitamins weren’t so bad aside from remembering to take them, and once I got used to the taste neither were the other supplements the doctor suggested. Even now Ginger stopped by sometimes to check on me and deliver updates on the goings-on back at the college, letting me know I could come see her there anytime. She’d smiled, assuring me that if I ever wanted to return to work with her we’d take it as easy as I needed.
Ember’s attempts to get me out of the house came fewer and farther between, dropping down from every night to maybe once or twice a week. Every time my heart skipped but two nights ago we made it to the 24 hour gas station store. Under the too-bright lights the night vanished outside and I had to remember to take every breath deep enough to keep my head from spinning and there were too many choices and items lining every shelf and fridge and nowhere to hide but Ember kept by my side. She walked me through and let me rest my hand on her forearm, letting some of the warmth and calm seep from her skin through mine.
We bought drinks and the lights and hum of refrigerators disappeared as the door closed behind us. Stepping between shadows cast by vacant gas pumps we didn’t make it much farther than the store that night, but for the first time some of the tension melted under quiet streetlights. Chill air cooled my lungs and settled my head. The two of us talked all the way back home and together in the living room until far too late. She really shouldn’t have been staying up that late with her job interview tomorrow, though she was quick to reminded me it was only in the afternoon.
Her interview went well, and by the end of the week she’d been called back for a second and a week after that they offered her the job as a deckhand on a fishing vessel. From what she told us it sounded hard, and she’d be gone for long stretches during the season, but her excitement was contagious. Striker ordered take out to celebrate and we ended up only going to bed long after the sun had set.
Yawning, I pulled my shirt off, crawled into bed and drew the blanket snug around my shoulders. After all the excitement and celebration I sunk all the way down into the pillows and sheets.
A rattle came from my window, then another and I sat up, squinting in the dark. Grey-blue in the evening dark, a wing flashed into view then a beak tapping at the glass as a seagull fluttered by. Cirrus. It had to be. Otherwise some poor bird was very, very lost.
I hopped out of bed and opened up the window just as he glided back around. He landed on the windowsill in a blur of feathers, tucking his wings neatly to the side and shaking out his tail as he came to a stop. His head tilted left and right, pupils dilating a moment before finding the right focus.
“Hey Cirrus.” I leaned over, resting my elbows against the windowsill. “It is you, right?”
The gull ruffled his feathers, puffing up and laying them flat again in one smooth wave. He raised his beak and stuck out his chest as he watched me sideways. I smiled, warmth spreading from deep in my chest. Of course this was Cirrus. Hard to believe the last time I’d seen him was back at the cabin. How long ago was that now? I’d lost track.
Cirrus turned, webbed feet tapping against the wood of the windowsill in the quiet of the dark. He faced the street, dark and empty, glancing back at me over his grey shoulder. I frowned. Did he want…
“You want me to go with you?”
He gave a quick nod, holding his head sideways to lock me in one of his little eyes. I swallowed and wrung my hands together. How far would he want me to go? What if something happened? I hunched my shoulder, hair falling in front of my face as I stared down at my arms.
“I, I don’t know Cirrus.” How was I supposed to tell him? How was I supposed to tell him I hadn’t gone much further than a few blocks from home on my own since I got back. “I don’t know.”
A weight landed on my shoulder, webbed feet against my skin. Cirrus pushed his beak through my hair to poke at my cheek. He settled down, feathers of his belly soft against my skin. I sighed and turned my neck to see him through the corners of my eyes.
Even if we hadn’t gone far nothing horrible happened whenever I went out with Ember. I held Cirrus’ stare for a moment, watching him blink and turn his head. If something did go wrong Cirrus would have seen it before, right? He didn’t know what Ginger did but it wouldn’t be the first time he’d helped. I could handle this. If I could handle the cemetery in the middle of the day I could handle a walk in the middle of the night.
I sighed again, straightening up slowly to give Cirrus the chance to hop down. “Alright. Let me get dressed first.”
Cirrus waited outside, perched on a nearby streetlight and watching as I finally stepped out into the night. I shut and locked the door as softly as I could behind me, trying to keep the nerves already wrapping around my throat in check. A flurry of feathers made me look up a second before Cirrus landed softly on my shoulder. Webbed feet tapped quiet on my jacket and grey wing-tips tickled my ear as he turned. He stuck his head out a second, caught my eye and flew down the street.
“Hey!”
I took off running after him. My feet fell loud and echoing in the quiet side streets and alleyways, chasing flashes of white feathers under spaced-out streetlights until I staggered to a breathless stop. Hands on my knees and hunched over on the sidewalk, my heart struggled to keep up with my lungs and my legs burned. Shit. How long had it been since I moved this much? Cold air scraped at the back of my throat. I coughed and tried to catch my breath. By the time I looked up Cirrus was gone.
I grit my teeth. “Damn it.”
A seagull’s call pierced through the quiet, shrill and laugh-like. Sounded like he wasn’t too far, towards the waterfront. Of course he’d want me to meet him there. I pulled myself back upright. He’d have to wait though because I wasn’t about to run the whole way there.
I’d almost caught my breath by the time the gentle lapping of the waves caught my ear, soft and rhythmic against the deserted shore. A full moon hung bright over the ocean casting liquid silver over the dark water and the white crests of incoming waves. I slowed as I stepped out onto the beach. Full moon. Cirrus, he hadn’t waited for me here after I’d gone home, had he? Waited and hoped I’d show up for him only to leave disappointed like he had so many times hoping his mother would come around.
He’d understand why I hadn’t come, if he’d waited here for me at all. I bunched my shoulders against the wind and shook the thought from my head, picking my way across the dark beach to the usual place. Tiny creatures, insects, arthropods, they scurried away from my path with every step. Moment by moment the lights of the city faded to a faint glow at my back to give way to blue-dark night.
A figure sat on a washed-up log, turning when I rounded the bend. A woman in an ink-black evening gown that billowed around her ankles when she stood and faced me with a polite smile.
“Well, you’ve sure perked up since I last saw you.” She paused, waiting, but I only squinted in attempts to place where we might have met. “Ah, you don’t recognize me.” She gestured to herself with a black-gloved hand. “Cirrus’ sister. Call me Hadley.”
We had met, hadn’t we. I furrowed my eyebrows and tried to remember back but couldn’t see much more than a blur, a haze of feathers and loud voices that seemed to rumble through the air and into my own lungs.
Hadley though either hadn’t noticed or didn’t mind, catching me with a nod as she settled back down on the log. “Cirrus should be here soon.” She shot me a smirk, raising her head high. “I have been instructing him on how to shift his form but it can be hit or miss. He wanted to see you though, so I agreed to help him out tonight.”
She leaned back resting her hands behind her and facing the shimmering sea. Her head tilted just a moment as I sat beside her. This close she had the same barely contained power Cirrus did, cold and powerful like a harsh wind biting through my clothes. She kept quiet, watching as wave after wave lapped at the rocky shore. Slowly, I ran my hand over the worn bark of the log, tracing over ridges and bits where the wood had torn and weathered away.
“Ah,” Hadley stood, smoothing down her dress in the breeze. “Sounds like he’s done.”
The bushes growing beside the beach rustled, and a moment later Cirrus stuck his head out, one hand covering half his face and casting a sheepish look at Hadley.
She half chuckled to herself with a short glance back at me. “One moment.”
Without waiting for any kind of response, she stepped out of sight behind the foliage and the night dark. She said something, mumbling and chiding but too low for me to make out, Cirrus responding with something indignant and defensive but without any teeth behind his words. I smiled, leaning forward on the log to try and peek around the bushes and shadows. That was Cirrus alright.
The leaves rustled again, branches snapped, and Cirrus swore as he stumbled out onto the beach. He found his balance and shook himself out, looking just like I remembered. Same hair, same eyes… I jumped up from the log and throwing my arms around him. He balked a moment, surprised, before returning the embrace. His clothes were warm and smelled like storm-bearing winds, familiar and new at the same time. I leaned against him, pressing my forehead against his shoulder a moment before standing up again, throat tight.
“Miss me?” Cirrus grinned, already knowing the answer.
I nodded. “Its different, with you gone.” Maybe not quieter now that Ember was around, but different. I swallowed and turned away, a hand to the back of my neck as I glanced out to the ocean. “I don’t know if you were waiting for me here, but I’m sorry if you were.” My voice dragged along. “Things haven’t been easy.”
He shrugged. “I wouldn’t know, I haven’t been around here either. It’s been a whirlwind.” Cirrus huffed and crossed his arms, shaking his head to the dark pebbles.
“Oh come on Cirrus!” Hadley scolded, coming up around behind him and messing up his hair. She snickered as he tried and failed to duck out of the way. “You had a great time. Do you think I missed you flirting with that pretty noble lady?”
Cirrus flustered, uncrossing his arms and stumbling over his tongue. “She started it!” He shook himself out with another huff, crossing his arms tighter than before. “But yeah, alright. It wasn’t all bad.” He watched his sister as she retuned to her perch on the log, a half smile on his face, before turning back to me. “You’re looking better than last time I saw you. At least like you’re not about to get blown over by the wind.” Cirrus paused a moment, just standing, watching me as the breeze slipped silent between us. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you with so much colour in your face.
Even at in the dark? I looked away a moment, watching the moon hang bright over the gentle swells. Maybe he had better night vision than I did because Striker had said the same thing.
“I uh,” I faced him again, tucking my hands in my pockets and out of the chill. “I’ve been seeing some doctors since I got back for a while now. I guess it’s working.” The wind picked up again and I hunched my shoulders until Cirrus stepped to my side, blocking out some of the gale. “Ginger was saying the other day she’d be alright with me coming back to the college.”
“You going to do it?”
I shrugged, pushing rounded stones from side to side with the toe of my shoe. “I… I hope so. It’s been a while.” A smile played at my lips. “I kind of miss it actually.
Cirrus snorted. “Bored at home already?”
This time I grinned, full and toothy. “Maybe.”
He rolled his eyes but kept quiet, attention drifting up from me to the lights of the city down the beach. I glanced back over my shoulder to follow his gaze only a moment before focusing back on Cirrus. In the dark he looked just like I remembered, like nothing changed. Like he hadn’t been gone for months now and he’d never returned to life as a dragon. Like Ember hadn’t moved into his bedroom and he was going to be in the kitchen tomorrow morning when I got out of bed.
A deep ache spread sharp through my throat, all the way up to the floor of my mouth and I looked away. He had his own life now. His own life somewhere far away. Somewhere I couldn’t go and find him like I used to. He’d come to see me this time tonight but how long would that last? I swallowed. He wouldn’t forget about me now that what he’d hoped to happen for years and years finally came about, right?
“Do you remember back then when I couldn’t speak my name?” Cirrus spoke low, eyes still drifting over my head to the city. “That day you found me?”
I don’t think I would ever forget, he must have known that but I nodded all the same.
He paused, hesitating before speaking again. “It hurt for a long time. I used to dream of hearing it again, to be who I was again. But then…” Cirrus finally tore his gaze from Eventide. He looked down at me, the faintest of the distant light reflecting in his eyes. “It didn’t feel the same anymore. I’m keeping Cirrus. I just wanted you to know that.”
“Really?” My voice came out smaller than I expected, thinned and brittle. “You don’t miss the other?”
Cirrus shrugged. “I can’t say I don’t, but I don’t know, I couldn’t bring myself to part with this name yet.” He half smiled. “My mother wasn’t exactly thrilled but she’ll get over it.”
From what I’d heard of her, I wasn’t surprised. “You’re still going to come and visit, right?”
“Of course.” Cirrus casted a sidelong glance at his sister still seated on the log and gazing out to sea. “Though it might be a while yet before I get the hang of shape shifting alone.” He paused a moment before turning back to me. “I’ll be around. I’ve got at least a couple more centuries of watching over Eventide’s storms after all.”
That long? I guess it made sense. He was a dragon after all. I smiled but broke halfway by a surprise yawn. What time was it?
A warm hand rested on my shoulder as Cirrus’ laugh drifted over the crashing waves. “Keeping you up?” He grinned down at me as he turned towards the city. “I’ll take you home.”
We walked along the beach towards the soft city lights. At this time of night we had the sidewalks to ourselves, only the occasional car passing by the empty roads. My arm brushed his, contented warmth easing from him to me. I quickly ran out of things to update him on since coming back to Eventide and he took over most of the way home telling me all about his sisters and the trouble they’d get into. Even in the low light I could see how he flushed talking about the woman Hadley had brought up on the beach. I smiled, struggling to keep my eyes open and half leaning against his shoulder as we walked.
He sounded happy.

Sun sinking low in the sky relief pooled in my chest seeing how quiet Eventide College was this time of day. A handful of people milled and wandered around the front stairs, some chatting and laughing in the gold-tinged light. Inside the front lobby soft echoes of conversation drifted through the still air and the little coffee shop sat nearly empty with the last few customers before closing time rolled around.
My footsteps echoed through the empty halls, clicking against the stone stairs spiralling down towards Ginger’s basement. I hadn’t told her I was coming but surely she wouldn’t be unhappy to see me all the way out here.
The air chilled and a familiar presence brushed against my arm. I slowed, letting Cynthia gently press up against my shoulder as her relief and excitement slipped through my skin. A smile spread on my face and I held out a hand. She knew me. She knew how to be gentle, how to contain herself unlike the panicked, desperate spirits who needed my help.
She slid though my palm, passing cold up the veins of my arm all the way up where they joined together in the subclavian. Good to see you again. It’s been a while.
I nodded along, continuing down the stairs as she settled in deeper tucked under my first rib. Been a while was an understatement. I swallowed. Had anyone told her what happened? It must have seemed like I’d just vanished one day, Ginger too. Charlotte filled me in. We were all worried about you for a while there. Glad to see you back on your feet. Thanks.
The stairs opened up to the little underground hallway, my footsteps booming in the quiet. I tucked my hands in my pockets and shifted as Cynthia nestled herself more comfortably towards my chest. Here to see Ginger? I nodded. If she’s here. She is. Saw her come in a few hours ago. Good. Good. Does this mean you’re going to stick around? I turned the last corner, slowing to a shuffle. Had I even considered not coming back here? Even if Ginger had told me I’d never be able to come back here would I really be able to just… Stop?
Even if you change you mind, her grin crossed my face, you should still stop by. You’re the easiest living person to chat with to come through those doors.Really? Faster than hijacking Charlotte’s computer. Fair enough.
I paused in front of Ginger’s office, the door slightly ajar. Cynthia stilled under my skin, cold and fluid. Could you give us a minute? Right. Was good to see you again Asher. She shifted a moment before breathing out through the thin skin at the top of my chest and vanishing somewhere through the walls of the college. Alone I stood another moment in front of the door. I took a deep breath, rested my hand on the door handle and opened it up just enough to poke my head into Ginger’s office.
She looked up from her computer as soon as she saw me. For a moment surprise seemed to flash across her face but in a heartbeat it shifted to a wide, fang-filled smile.
“Asher! Welcome back.”

Sunshine
The glass of the apartment windows rattled under the sheer force of wind that spiked outside, throwing all of its weight against the sides of the building, as if trying to break through. It squirmed and thrashed, almost like it was being restrained from wreaking the havoc and damage it was truly capable of.
It howled and whined as it whistled between the clusters of charcoal clouds that still clung to the bleak night sky which formed the Earth’s backdrop, just until the break of dawn made itself known as it did with every new morning that came.
Rain drops continued to splatter against the window panes, without a single sign of stopping any time soon. The heavens had well and truly opened as the downpour covered the sidewalks in water, rippling puddles lining the paths for those who dared to still be out in the storm that raged on through the night.
The pitter-patter sound of the rain as it impacted the glass was deafening, a truly frightening level of volume as the city continued to endure one of the worst storms it had had in a long time.
A clap of thunder had been faintly heard in the distance not so long ago and it was now a burning curiosity for anyone still awake at such a ghastly hour, to know just when the lightning would be accompanying its natural companion.
And yet, despite the violent performance from Mother Nature, there was one particular man who had voluntarily gone out into it, just as he always did. It was his duty; a vow to the city he lived within, made many years ago that he would protect it, wherever possible.
Such a vow could not be broken, even when the wind and rain tried so desperately to hold him back from what he silently promised the citizens of Bludhaven.
It made his job more difficult at times and of course, he was putting himself in harm’s way more. He knew that he could slip and fall from an outrageous height when the weather was like this; he knew he could be hurled into dangerous territory by the powerful winds but, he also knew that if he skipped a night of watching the city like a mysterious guardian, it could mean an innocent’s death at the hands of a criminal.
He decided that fact alone meant he would face obscene weather patterns, no matter the danger, each and every time if he had to.
There was, however, an upside to the state of the elements when it worsened like it had. Criminals and levels of crime in general tended to decrease, especially when it finally reached 3am.
Nightwing stifled a yawn as he swung through the gaps between tall buildings, being careful to maintain his grip on the handle of his grappling hook. He propelled himself forward, glimpsing at the few stars painted across the sky, ever so slightly hidden by the rain tinted veil beyond his mask.
He aligned his arms to collect speed and momentum as he tumbled towards the empty streets below, his soaked ebony locks whipping around his face, only serving to get his skin wetter than before.
The colors and lights of nearby structures passed his line of sight in a hazy blur as he hurtled towards the ground, smirking and opening his eyes just in time.
He shot his hook upwards, an audible zipping sound coming from the device as it locked onto the stone railing of a nearby pizza parlor. He swept over the ground, narrowly missing its touch by a single breath.
Flying through the air, he felt alive; his heart buzzing and soaring like he was. He had felt flight in many ways and despite the love he had for his own way, he preferred another’s much more.
He envisioned her; the carefree way she spun and dove through the clouds, her scarlet hair coming to him in bright flashes and the way her emerald eyes sparkled as if basking in a secret shared that only the two of them knew about.
He smiled and finally saw the location he desired; suddenly clamoring over rooftops and railings to reach it in haste.
Once his final leap was complete and he was glued to the side of the building, he fiddled with the latch of one of the windows, attempting to ignore the way the rain beat down on him and trickled down the back of his neck and beneath his uniform.
He clenched his jaw, unable to wait for the satisfying warmth that would soon cocoon him.
When the window opened, he slid inside without delay and closed it again, locking it tight behind him. Nightwing released the breath he had been holding inside his chest and strolled towards one of the closest apartments in the hallway, disregarding all the other doors that lined the corridor of the floor he was on.
There was only one that was on his mind and he felt his fluttering in his stomach beginning to stir at the thought of being inside.
As he approached the dark stained entrance, he peered at the silver reflection of the door number before reaching into one of the back compartments of his belt and fishing out his keys.
Slotting it into the groove of the lock, he gave it a few gentle twists as to not alert nor wake anyone within. Biting his lip, he grasped the handle and opened the door.
He pulled the key back and paused, noticing that the lights were all on from where he was stood, all the way into the lounge area. His dark brows furrowed in confusion but he avoided calling out any names, just in case.
It was only after depositing his set of keys in the ceramic bowl that sat atop the oak console table, just to the right of the front door, did he hear it.
His interest and curiosity piqued with the faint sound of music, drifting from the living room and calling to him around the edge of the hallway.
Slipping his mask from his face and stashing it on the table top, Dick silently crept along the border of the corridor, practically plastering himself to the wall as to not be detected.
He ran his gloved fingers against the peach stained walls, a warmth blossoming inside of him as he neared closer to the source of the upbeat music that filled his ears.
It was light and happy, a familiar tune that he heard often playing from the record player but it couldn’t be. She wouldn’t still be up at this hour, surely.
Just as he drew close to the end of the hallway, more noises carried themselves through the air.
Dick could hear the honey laced humming that was so akin to vocal ambrosia and so very familiar to his senses. It was such a relaxing sound that he melted against the wall for a long moment, simply becoming lost in the depth of her tone.
He could hear gentle movement, back and forth and across the floor. Her feet were brushing against the carpet and what weight she owned shifted from floorboard to floorboard.
Dick’s grin only grew wider as he remained rooted to the spot, a hand pressed to the wall as he reveled in the homely sound of her voice.
His brows hit his hairline when he heard a tiny giggle bubble up from another just beyond the bend of the wall. He knew that flourish of laughter as well; all too well.
Unable to resist taking a peek, Dick moved a little more so that he could watch the scene before him. His heart constricted and he sucked in a breath, powerless to stop the serene smile that formed upon his lips. His cerulean gaze became a half lidded one as he soon started to lose himself in the trance of what stood before him.
Her long hair swayed around her hips like a waterfall of rubies, following the line of her body however she moved; a soft ribbon alive with the melodic tune that was coming from the turntable in the far corner of the living room.
Her back was facing him before she spun and twirled around, her toes just about touching the floor as she danced to the music. Her golden skin was glowing in the dim light but her face was one of calm and peace, green eyes hidden for the time being as she enveloped herself in this moment, truly absorbing it like she would never have another.
She had yet to notice him but he could tell she was in her own little world as she continued to hum along to the song echoing and ricocheting off the walls.
His smile grew at the little one in her arms; their first child of love and bundle of joy. Her disheveled locks of fluffy black hair framed her chubby face as she stared up at Kory with a glazed expression, her big jade orbs focused on nothing else besides her mother; almost as if nothing else even existed beside her beacon of light.
Her lips were upturned into an almost vacant smile; a few giggles escaping her whenever Kory leaned down and absently brushed her nose against her daughter’s button one.
Dick leaned against the corner, his arms crossed over his chest as he simply watched them, his heart threatening to explode out of pure love and adoration for the woman and little girl in front of him.
It was impossible to look away from them; his emotions catching in his throat at how at ease he felt, knowing this was his family. Despite the things he would see on patrol or the things he would have to fight out there, it was always a comfort to know this is what he would be coming back to.
When the day was over and the work was done, this little household was what held him together; no matter what kind of stress life threw in his direction. Everything was worth it because he had this. It was the only constant in his life and god, he wouldn’t swap it for anything else in the entire world.
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine… you make me happy when skies are grey…” Kory whispered to her daughter, who was now pressing her tiny fingers to the soft skin of her mother’s cheek,
Dick felt his heart flip at how much love was injected into the quiet singing of his wife; a known fact that Mar’i was everything to her and to him, but it made him shiver to hear the way she sang to their child. He’d always known she would suit motherhood like no other on this Earth.
“You'll never know dear, how much I love you…” Kory paused and rested her forehead against her baby’s, “Please don’t take my sunshine away…”
Her tone was hushed and there was something so gentle in the air that Dick was petrified he would shatter by making his presence known.
“I love you, mama…” Mar’i whispered, her little arms gripping ever tighter around her mother’s neck.
Kory smiled and exhaled quietly, pressing several kisses to her face, earning an uproar of laughter as she shifted her around in her arms, attacking her with affection whilst Mar’i continued to squeal with joy.
Dick must have only moved a centimeter but it was enough to earn his wife’s attention. Her head turned towards his direction and her eyes snapped open, softening immensely when she saw who it was.
He smirked and gave her a muted wave in greeting.
Kory sighed in what appeared to be relief before she twisted Mar’i in her arms so she could also see who was home for the night, “Mar’i… look…”
His daughter’s reaction made his knees buckle a fraction and his heart melted from the thousand watt smile that lit up her entire face,
“Daddy!” She squealed, immediately squirming to get to him.
Kory laughed and released her, watching as she padded across the space between in her purple, star covered pajamas, arms outstretched and desperate for cuddles from her father.
Dick was just as fast, scooping her straight up and lifting her high above his head before he pulled her close and cuddle her to his chest, pressing several kisses to her mess of dark hair.
“Hi there, Starshine…” He murmured, stroking her back.
Mar’i pulled back with a frown, “Daddy is all wet!”
He chuckled and leaned in, rubbing his damp cheek against hers, eliciting a loud bubble of laughter from the tiny toddler. She shook her head and wriggled away, all the while, a smile on her face.
“We can blame all the rain for that, honey.”
Mar’i pouted and turned her nose upwards, “Bad rain!”
Kory shook her head and drifted closer to the two of them, retrieving Mar’i back from him to ensure she didn’t get soaked through her warm pajamas, “Greetings, my love…”
Dick failed to stop the dopey grin that lit up his expression as he touched her waist and leaned close, “Hey…”
He captured her lips with his own, the frozen bite of his becoming soothed and rectified by the heat emanating from his beloved wife. Her skin was like fire; a calming heat amidst the treacherous weather outside. He always felt so much better within proximity of her, her surge of warmth lighting a room better than any kind of other device.
She made a small sound at the back of her throat when he slipped his tongue against her bottom lip as he sought permission to deepen their gesture of love. Kory was about to oblige him before they were split apart by the dramatic retching sound of their 2 year old daughter.
When they pulled away, they both glanced at her as she pulled multiple expressions of disgust,
“Blech!” She droned, grinning when they both issued her with a raised brow,
“I have a question for you, Starshine. What are you doing up? It’s way past your bedtime, isn’t it?”
Mar’i shrank a little against Kory’s shoulder, idly playing with the strands of her mother’s ember filled locks,
“Mama said it was okay…” She mumbled, not wanting to get into trouble,
Dick blinked and turned his gaze to his wife who was passively staring back at him before she rubbed Mar’i’s back, “She couldn’t sleep… she was worried about daddy being out in the storm all alone.”
He visibly softened and smiled sympathetically at their child; a very deep thinker despite her youth, “So… I said we would wait up for you together.”
Kory tilted her head at him and waited for him to speak and when he did, it was nothing short of what she imagined him saying,
“Now that I’m home, Mar’i… how about I read you a bedtime story? Hm?” He murmured, tucking some of her black curls behind her ear,
Mar’i sat up straight and beamed at her father, “Story!”
Dick chuckled and gave her cheek a kiss, “That’s right. Story with daddy and then sleepy byes, okay?”
She rapidly nodded, excited for the offer of a story before succumbing to slumber, as most children desired.
Kory ran her fingers through her baby’s hair, marveling at the thickness of it all, “Do you want to pick out the story daddy reads to you?”
“Uh huh!” Mar’i approved, steeling herself as Kory lowered her to the floor. Mar’i shuffled along the carpet, her little legs carrying her as she scurried towards her bedroom, decorated with stars and splashes of violet and plum.
“Pick a good one, Mar’i and I’ll be there in a minute…” Dick called, already sensing his wife’s touch as her fingertips grazed his chest,
He turned back towards her, grinning at how close she was now, “Hello again, Kor…”
She leaned towards him, barely whispering, “Hello…” before she pressed her cupid bow lips against his, her fingers sliding up from the front of his uniform to the line of his jaw, cupping his handsome face to hold him still as she snuck in some kisses.
Dick’s eyes closed on their own accord, falling deeper into the bliss that was his wonderful wife. He could feel the metal of her wedding ring against the skin of his cheek and he felt electric shoot through him; a reminder that she was his and he was hers, now and forever.
Sometimes, he found himself dwelling on just how lucky he’d been to have found her and how utterly thankful he was to have her in his life; to have her as his wife and to have her as the mother of his child.
He could think of no better person to stand at his side for eternity and as he slipped his cold hands beneath the old t-shirt of his that clung to her torso, he smirked.
She gasped and pulled back, breathless, “That was not very nice.”
He brushed his nose against hers, his breath full of husk, “If I let you kiss me any longer, then we’d probably be on the floor and scarring Mar’i for life.”
Kory rolled her forest green eyes at him and gently smacked his arm, “You make it sound as if I have no self control around you.”
“Honey, I don’t think you do… that’s how we ended up with our little baby in there.” He replied, jerking his head in the direction of Mar’i’s room,
His Princess snorted and folded her arms over her chest, “Oh? I seem to forget… please… remind me who started talk about having a child?”
Dick chuckled and squeezed her hips, “Alright, ya got me…”
Kory matched the serene smile that appeared on his face and ran her feathery touch along his chin, staring into his ocean eyes, “I am glad you are safe… I worry when you are patrolling in weather like this…”
His smile faltered a little, “I know… sorry I took longer… I ran into a drug deal going south and… I had to deal with it. They had someone hostage if this group didn’t deliver.”
Kory pecked the corner of his mouth, “I know… it is okay. All that matters is that you are home.” She paused, “Are you hungry?”
Dick grinned, “Famished…”
“Cereal or… leftover pizza?”
“Hm… decisions, decisions.”
She giggled and shook her head, opening her mouth to respond when they heard the rapidly approaching sound of tiny feet on wooden flooring,
“Daddy! Ready!” Mar’i squeaked, holding the picture book she wanted read to her, high above her head,
Dick glanced over his shoulder and lifted an eyebrow, “The Gruffalo, again?”
Mar’i pouted, “It’s my favorite!”
He laughed and gently let go of his wife, “Alright, alright, c’mon. Get snuggled under the covers, then.”
Their daughter beamed at him before she spun and headed back into her room to do just that.
Dick smiled and looked back at Kory, “Duty calls… I’ll be back soon.”
Kory sighed in content as he pressed a quick kiss to the palm of her hand before letting it go entirely.
“Hurry… or I may just eat both of your snacking options.” She murmured, turning and wandering into the kitchen, winking at him over her shoulder.
Dick smirked and shook his head as he ambled towards Mar’i’s room, grateful to have all of this; always ready and always waiting for him after the longest of nights.

Hey! I hope your inbox is not too flooded! (But who can blame anyone? Your writing is always on top!) I was wondering if you could write something (headcanon, drabble, doesn't matter) where Barba's s/o is a career woman and they're pregnant, they planned it and they both wanted to work and get help from a babysitter/Lucia/Eddie. But now his s/o wants to be an at home mom and she doesn't know where this comes from, it confuses herself
One shot of baby shopping with Rafael? 💕
I’m so so sorry that this took me so long, but I hope this is worth it!
“How much could a little baby possibly need? I don’t understand, we already have the essentials, why can’t we just get anything else on an as needed basis,” Rafael said as he helped you out of the cab in front of Skip Hop on 50th street.
The two of you had been waiting to have a day off together for months so that you could go shopping for your baby girl. It seemed like a small miracle in and of itself that your cases in homicide had dwindled, especially in a city like New York, which always seemed to have some kind of crime going on. Still, you weren’t about to complain up a Saturday where you didn’t have to stare at a dead body instead of your husband’s green eyes and intoxicating smirk.
“Honey, I’m telling you, we’re gonna need more than just a crib, changing table and a few outfits. We need diapers--”
“--My mom is getting us diapers--”
“--Wipes--”
“--Will come with the diapers--”
“--We need more onesies--”
“--How many onesies can one baby go through?--”
“--Toys--”
“--Okay, I’m gonna stop you right there,” Rafael said, gently taking your elbow to stop you from going into the store. “The baby won’t be able to play with any toys for a few months, we don’t need toys right now.”
“Babe, the baby needs stimulation, and I’m sorry as awesome as it is to listen to you recite case law, we are not enough stimulation.”
He rolled his eyes as you pulled him inside the store and led him towards the clothes. You were almost there when you were distracted by the baby activity gyms.
“Oh look, Rafael! This one is perfect!” you said, looking at one that was shaped like a cloud with pillows built in on one side. “Look, the Silver Lining Cloud Activity Gym, see? It’s got rattles and things the baby can swat at, like a little cat.”
“Did you seriously just compare our child to a feline?”
“I mean, it is like a cat, have you seen babies swat at stuff? It’s like a cat with one of those mouse-on-a-string things,” you answered.
“Fine, get the Silver Lining Cloud,” he replied with a smirk.
“Or should we get this one?” you asked, looking at another that was owl themed.
“No, I like this one better, it has pillows built in, it looks way more comfortable,” he replied, putting a hand on the Silver Lining box. “I like this one,” he said again.
“Okay.” You smiled at him, kissing his cheek and gasping.
“What?” he asked in a panic. “Are you in labor? It’s too soon!”
“No, I’m not in labor, your daughter is kicking,” you answered, moving his hand to your stomach, making him smile when he felt the kicks. “Looks like she agrees with you, Silver Lining Cloud it is.”
“What about a baby bouncer, mija?” he asked your belly, receiving another round of kicks. “Is that a yes, muñequita?” he cooed, bending to press kisses against your belly as a third flurry of kicks began. “Okay, anything you want mi princesa.”
“Did I just become obsolete in this conversation?” you teased.
“Aw no, mi amor. Of course not,” he answered, kissing your lips.
“We really should get some onesies,” you said, continuing through the store towards the clothes.
“Honey, we have plenty of--”
“--Oh. My. God. We’re getting this,” you said, turning and holding up a onesie that read, it’s all shits and giggles...until someone giggles and shits.
“Honey--”
“-- And this one!” you exclaimed, grabbing another and holding it up for him to see. “Made in Vachina. Get it? Vachina,” you said, giggling as you looked back at the onesie. “That’s fantastic.”
“Dear God,” he chuckled, seeing another onesie that was light pink and smirking to himself. “How about that one? I’m not allowed to date, ever. I like that.”
“Of course you do,” you replied, rolling your eyes playfully as you grabbed his pick and continued looking through the clothes. “Do you ever get nervous that we won’t do a good job?” you asked after a moment, coming across a onesie that said, Daddy’s little girl. A fond smile came over your face as you pulled it off the shelf and placed it on top of the pile in your arm.
“Sometimes, but...honestly, I think as long as we stick together, we’ll figure it out,” he answered. “I know it won’t be perfect and it definitely won’t be easy, but as long as we have each other to lean on, we’ll be okay. We’re gonna love this baby so much.”
“Yeah,” you answered, smiling at him. “I’m hungry,” you said after a moment, and he snorted as he followed you to the counter to pay for all your chosen items.
“What does mi amor feel like eating?” he asked as the cashier rang up your haul.
“The biggest crispy chicken salad we can find,” you answered as one hand rubbed over your belly. “With pickles. Lots of pickles.”
He chuckled. “You should really try to cut down on the pickles, babe, they have a lot of sodium.”
“Don’t you dare try to take a pregnant woman’s pickles. I will cut you,” you replied, shooting him a pointed stare.
His face fell and he looked truly terrified as you grinned again, taking up the bags with all the goodies for your baby.
“Come on, counselor. Your daughter needs noms!” you cooed, walking to the exit doors.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Rafael followed you out of the store and hailed a cab for the two of you. His eyes went down to your rounded belly resting comfortably atop your thighs, your hands flat against the circular shape your body had formed and the corner of his mouth stretched into a half smile. The thought of the baby girl that lived inside you, his baby girl, warmed his soul in a way nothing else in his life had. Not even graduating from law school at the top of his class could compare to the pride that he felt knowing that in just two short months, he would become someone’s father. The notion excited and terrified him in a single breath.
His arm raised until it was curling around your shoulders and it was then that he realized that you were staring down at your stomach and that the corners of your lips were ever so slightly curled downward.
“You okay, mi amor?” he asked softly, his hand squeezing your shoulder affectionately.
“I’ve been thinking about how busy we both are with our careers,” you answered. Your eyes watched as your baby girl rolled in your belly, a visible bulge making your skin stretch to accommodate her movements. “I don’t want us to never have time for her.” Your vision blurred as tears filled the brims of your eyes, a single blink making them drip down your cheeks.
“Babe, we talked about this,” he whispered to you. “My mom said she would help us with childcare as much as she can and--”
“I know, but she’s our daughter,” you replied, voice going up an octave as more tears streamed down your face. “What if we miss things? Important things? What if she graduates pre school and we don’t even realize it until she’s graduating high school? What if she doesn’t realize we’re her parents?!”
“Honey, what are you talking about?”
“What if she thinks we’re the babysitters?!” you shrieked, sobbing loudly and devoid of all control as your husband glanced at the frightened expression on the cab driver’s face.
“Babe--”
“OUR OWN DAUGHTER DOESN’T EVEN KNOW US!!” you wailed.
Rafael sighed softly as the hand holding your shoulder came up to stroke your hair as the opposite hand went to rest against your belly. “Corazón, calm down,” he whispered. “Shshshsh, baby, don’t cry.”
He tried his best to soothe you and calm you down as the cab came to a stop at a red light. Glancing at the street signs outside the window, Rafael turned his attention back to you as hiccups replaced the sobs and he used the back of his index finger to wipe away the latest teardrops that had slipped past your lower lids.
“That’s it, honey, just breathe,” he said, still combing his fingers through your hair. Your daughter kicked against his palm and Rafael’s heart fluttered in his chest as a smirk planted itself on his lips. “See look, even the baby wants you to calm down.”
You let out a laugh that sounded more like a sob and sniffled as you wiped your eyes.
“I don’t want to miss everything,” you said in a shaky, cracking voice.
“Tell me what you do want,” he replied softly, tilting his head to try and meet your eyes.
“I don’t know,” you whispered, looking down at your stomach again. “I want to be there for her. Really be there for her. I want…”
He could sense what you wanted to say, but knew that it had to come from you and you alone. You’d been working as a homicide detective for as long as he’d known you, and not only did you love your job, but you were damn good at it. Rafael knew that if you were thinking about leaving, it wasn’t a decision you were making lightly.
“I think I want to be a stay-at-home mom,” you said, finally looking up to meet his gaze. “I didn’t think I did before, but…”
“What brought this on?” he asked as his fingers slid between your locks.
“I was talking with your mom the other day, and she was saying how she never wants us to hire a sitter or a nanny because the baby should be raised by family, not a stranger--”
“Honey, don’t let my mom make you feel badly about wanting to go back to work. You know, I support you going back to the precinct after your maternity leave,” he said.
“I know and it’s not because of what she said. I’ve just been thinking about how even if I did go back to work, my mind would be with her. Wondering what she’s doing, if she did anything cute that day, if she had a poop explosion…”
“You do realize we’re on our way to eat food,” he said.
“I realized that I want to be home with her. I want to be the one taking care of her, feeding her, changing her, taking her to the park,” you said, looking up at him. “I already love her so much.”
“So do I,” he replied.
“I really think I want to stay home with her,” you said again. “I’m changing...I want different things. I feel like I’m in a new place in my life. The only murder I want to solve is the murder of my nipples when she starts teething--”
“--Honey…” Rafael glanced at the driver, catching a glimpse of the smirk that the man was desperately trying to hide.
“The murder of her undies when she gets her first period--”
“Y/N!”
“My point is that I’m turning into a different person...and at first I wasn’t sure why I was feeling this way, but I can’t help but want this,” you said. “Please don’t hate me--”
“--Why would I hate you? How could I hate you for wanting to stay home with our baby?” he asked. “I could never, never hate you for that, mi amor. Never.”
You sniffled as the cab pulled up to your favorite greek restaurant. “Really?”
“Of course not,” he replied as he reached into his wallet and paid the driver before the two got out of the taxi. Taking your hand, Rafael spoke with the hostess and pulled you to the table that the young lady led you to.
As you opened the menu, he tucked some hair behind your ear and kissed the skin beneath your lobe.
“Mi vida, if what you want is to stay home and raise our child, I’m behind you. I’ll support whatever decision you make,” he said.
You took a moment to consider the rollercoaster of emotions you had experienced over the last few days. Your hand fell once again on your stomach as you decision became clear and you looked up at your husband with resolve. “I want to be a stay-at-home mom.”
He nodded once. “Okay.”
“I can put in my papers next week, and with any luck, get my pension by the time she’s born,” you said.
Smiling at you, he leaned forward and firmly kissed your lips. “I love you,” he whispered, kissing you again. “I love you so, so much. You’re an amazing wife. You’re gonna be such an amazing mom and I couldn’t be more proud of you.”
“I love you too,” you answered, smiling at him. “Thank you for not divorcing my crazy, pregnant ass.”
He chuckled and shook his head. “You’re just a little emotional, honey. It’s okay. You’re the love of my life...besides you’ve seen my crazy and you’re still here. I’m not entirely sure anyone could handle it as gracefully as you do.”
“I love your crazy, babe. My crazy attorney.”
Rafael grinned at you and kissed the corner of your jaw as a server came up and took your orders. He sipped his water after the server left to put in your food and reached for your hand.
“We still have to name her,” he mused, kissing your palm.
“I know...and you’re for sure against Petunia?”
“Babe...Petunia Barba? Do you want her to be bullied?” he replied. “I think I’d like her middle name to be Olivia…”
“Really?”
“Yeah...Liv’s been really important in both our lives and since you want your sister to be her Godmother--”
“--Earthmother,” you corrected.
“Right. I thought we could give a nod to Olivia in a different way,” he said.
“Okay, I like Olivia for her middle name,” you replied, nodding your head.
“How about Juana?” he suggested.
“I thought you said you didn’t want her to be bullied?”
“Juana is a beautiful name,” he replied.
“It is but for a baby? The name is pretty dated,” you said, grimacing.
“Okay, you have a point,” he answered.
“What about Colbie?” you asked, drinking from your water glass.
“Colbie Olivia Barba.” He said the name under his breath several times, testing the feel of it on his lips. You grinned, bringing his hand to rest against your belly where your daughter was kicking happily against you.
“I think she likes it,” you whispered.
“I think you’re right,” he replied through a smile. “Okay...Colbie it is.”

Different baby toys ideas as Christmas gift
Best for Music: Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy Some experts believe that listening to classical music can do a world of good for your baby, including making your baby smarter and happier. As if that isn’t good enough reason to add a little classical listening to your baby’s playlist, think about what a nice change of pace a little classical music will be from the usual “The Wheels on the Bus” and “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” that you likely have on heavy rotation.
The Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy is great because it provides baby with seven classical music tunes (including Mozart, Vivaldi, Chopin, and Rossini) at the touch of a button, but there’s more to love about this toy than just the tunes. Baby’s senses will be delighted as she watches the lights dance with each note and as she learns to grip the toy with its easy-to-hold (and adorable) giraffe sidebar.
It includes a volume button and requires two AA batteries, which come included. The toy is recommended for three months and up.
Best for Sensory Development: Manhattan Toy Winkel Rattle and Teether Toy
This Amazon’s Choice infant toy may seem simple, but its benefits for your baby are many. The mesmerizing maze of safe, BPA free, and soft tubes are great for teething kids, but more than that, the continuous tubes promote clutching and two-handed play, while the middle cube provides a pleasing rattle sound that babies love.
The Manhattan Toy Winkel Rattle and Sensory Teether Toy is the winner of multiple newborn toy awards, including the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Blue Chip Award. This toy is recommended for kids from zero to 24 months.
Best Classic: The First Years Stack Up Cups
As an Amazon’s Choice toy, The First Years Stack Up Cups provide multiple ways for your baby to play, all while building skills like hand-eye coordination and problem-solving. The eight brightly colored nesting cups are fun for kids to fit together, stack up, or turn over to hide things underneath.
Each cup has large numbers embossed on the base so as your kid grows he can continue to use this toy to practice counting and begin building number recognition skills. They’re fun for bath time play, as well. This toy is recommended for kids six months and up. More related topic : https://www.newmomstuff.com
Best for Travel: Sassy Wonder Wheel Activity Center
Besides the diaper bag and stroller, nothing is more important when traveling than bringing along some entertainment for the baby. The Sassy Wonder Wheel Activity Center provides just that, and is so easy to throw into a bag and then find at a moment’s notice amongst the diapers, wipes, backup outfit, and breastfeeding cover.
Simply stick the suction cup to any flat surface and watch your child become mesmerized by the spinning wheel. The centerpiece spinners enhance visual tracking and strengthen fine motor wheels, while also encouraging your baby to reach, tug, and bat, which helps develop hand-eye coordination. The colorful beads within the clear structure of the toy also help baby connect the idea of sound to sight. Multiple texture points are optimal for baby’s developed play, as well. This toy is recommended for kids six months and up.
Best for Teething: Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys
Another Amazon’s Choice product, the Nuby Ice Gel Teether Keys have more than 2,500 customer reviews, and they are the optimal toy for your teething baby. Additional areas of interest for your kid include the two colorful spinning rollers, three shape sorters, and three light-up buttons that develop motor skills.
There is also a pretend telephone handset and mechanical elements to enhance pretend play, and over 70 sing-along songs, music, sound effects, and fun phrases. The play panel is detachable for young children to play with on the ground, and it can be reattached to the walker as your baby grows and learns to move along with the toy. How We Tested
We bought one of our readers’ favorite infant toys that our reviewers tested for two hours. We asked our testers to consider the most important features when using this toy, from its durability to the skills it develops. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.
What to Look for in an Infant Toy
Durability: All that banging, chewing, and drooling can take a toll on toys. Make sure you look for ones that will hold up well, especially if you want to pass them on to younger siblings or relatives in the future. Consider the type of material toys are made of and also how versatile toys are and if they can accommodate a range of stages. More Christmas gift ideas : https://www.newmomstuff.com/babys-first-christmas-gift-ideas
Development skills: While toys should be fun, first and foremost, it’s a bonus if they also help boost certain skills. Some are focused on motor skills with others stimulate their senses or encourage movement. Try to choose a variety of toys that touch on various skills or select those that encourage a multitude of them.
Portability: While some larger toys are probably going to be playroom bound, you also want a selection of toys you can take on the go. From those that are small and light enough to throw in a diaper bag to ones that can be attached to a stroller or restaurant high chair, there are plenty of great options to keep your baby entertained no matter where you are. Also, consider where you’ll be taking the toys and if noise will be a factor. If you want to take them on an airplane, for example, you’ll definitely want volume control.
