TEDxNorrköping: Carol Dweck: The Power Of Yet
From the TED Site:
“Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet? A great introduction to this influential field.”

Altered Traits
Tumblr media
May 2018. San Francisco, CA
SIY Teacher Training Cohort 4, Fieldwork, Module 1:
"An altered trait - a new characteristic that arises from a meditation practice - endures apart from meditation itself. Altered traits shape how we behave in our daily lives, not just during or immediately after we meditate." (pg. 6)
Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body by Daniel Goleman & Richard Davidson
Good stuff so far! And in alignment with my personal experience of meditation.

SIY Teacher Community Gathering: Movement Activity: Freedom (Sept. 2018)
Dear SIY Teachers & Teachers-In-Training,
I will be teaching the choreography to a dance called “Freedom”, set to the song Freedom by Pharrell Williams. We will dance for half an hour, for the latter part of lunch, beginning at 1pm.
This is the same dance that was taught at the in-person teacher training back in April.
While there’s no need to prepare anything ahead of time, below is a video of the choreography, if you’d like to see the kind of movement we’ll be doing.
Later in the afternoon, two colleagues and myself will be leading a session titled “Creating A Culture Of Mindfulness Within An Organization”. In it we’ll explore what "Mindfulness" means in the workplace, and how it can help increase the awareness of the gap that often exists between an individuals’ pursuit of wellbeing within an organization, and the organizations’ goals, often driven by productivity & profit. We will explore whether, and in what capacity, there can be alignment, and if so, how it can be cultivated and supported.
We will also look at how we can respond to attempts of Mindfulness being used in organizations to assuage reactions to toxic work environments, and unhealthy work schedules & demands Vs. attempting to address & change the root causes of these problems….. And particularly in the field of Education, are we bringing mindfulness & Yoga into the classroom to get students to be more at peace with, and generate less push back to, unhealthy environments, unfair treatment, and bias teaching practices? How do we create better experiences for them, as well as for teachers, and simultaneously not gloss over “mis-behaviors” that are often a response to feeling unsafe, unheard, and not respected?
I look forward to seeing you there! :)

Version 1.1 (October 2016)
From the Mindfulness Initiative Site:
“This publication is primarily intended as a resource for those developing a business case for mindfulness training within their own organisation. It provides an updated summary of the research evidence, narrative rationales addressing different organisational needs, case studies and a range of toolkits to help with programme planning, implementation and evaluation.
The document has been developed by a volunteer working group convened by the Mindfulness Initiative and made up of champions from private sector companies including BT, EY, GE, GSK, HSBC and Jaguar Land Rover, supported by leading workplace mindfulness trainers and researchers. In response to the findings and recommendations of the Mindful Nation UK report, the group has tried to address the lack of publicly available information about implementing best-practice mindfulness training in the workplace, and encourages organisations to evaluate their programmes in order to develop the evidence base. It will be iteratively developed over time as capacity allows.”

One Definition of Mindfulness:
“Mindfulness is a natural capacity, present in all of us to some extent. It involves paying purposeful attention to our experience, with particular attitudes like openness and curiosity. We are all too familiar with its opposite: a heedless, distracted state that’s often described as ‘autopilot’. This default inattentiveness and disengagement from present experience can mean we react to life out of habit or impulse rather than care and consideration. When we spend more time alive to our experience, however, we unlock our potential for learning and growing and are better able to respond creatively to life’s challenges.”
One Definition of Collective Mindfulness:
“The combination of ongoing scrutiny of existing expectations, continuous refinement and differentiation of expectations based on newer experiences, willingness and capability to invent new expectations that make sense of unprecedented events, a more nuanced appreciation of context and ways to deal with it, and identification of new dimensions of context that improve foresight and current functioning...... Organizing mindfully across teams and departments in workplaces requires many individuals to consistently pay attention to the actual reality that unfolds for the organisation, and respond with awareness. Unless everyone is committed to responding mindfully, the organisation is prone to reverting to ‘mindlessness’, reaping less effective and sustainable outcomes over the long term.”
