162. Even in the worst of times, someone makes a profit.
168. Whisper your way to success.
(unnumbered, but mentioned as part of the “original” 173) A man is only worth the sum of his possessions.
177. Know your enemies…but do business with them always.
181. Not even dishonesty can tarnish the shine of profit.
189. Let others keep their reputation…you keep their latinum.
190. Hear all, trust nothing.
192. Never cheat a Klingon…unless you can get away with it.
194. It’s always good business to know your customers before they walk in the door.
202. The justification for profit is profit.
203. New customers are like razor-toothed greeworms. They can be succulent, but sometimes they bite back.
208. Sometimes the only thing more dangerous than a question is an answer.
211. Employees are the rungs on the ladder of success. Don’t hesitate to step on them.
214. Never begin a business negotiation on an empty stomach.
217. You can’t free a fish from water.
218. Always know what you’re buying.
223. Beware the man who doesn’t make time for oo-mox.
229. Latinum lasts longer than lust.
236. You can’t buy fate.
239. Never be afraid to mislabel a product.
242. More is good…all is better.
255. A wife is a luxury…a smart accountant a necessity.
261. A wealthy man can afford anything except a conscience.
263. Never allow doubt to tarnish your lust for latinum.
266. When in doubt, lie.
284. Deep down, everyone’s a Ferengi.
285. No good deed ever goes unpunished.
286. When Morn leaves, it’s all over. (made up by Quark—season 3, episode 3, this is representative of the idea that all things may be adjusted should it serve to make a profit)
299. Whenever you exploit someone, it never hurts to thank them. In that way, it is easier to exploit them next time.

EVERYBODY LOVES FIN: EPISODE 19
Tumblr media
Canucks Twitter has never been more passionate, divisive and heavily opinionated; let’s go with an all-encompassing—vibrant. Any fan base is a community of people with thoughts to share, and luckily for others, content to create for a wider audience. I have to admit, I’ve been largely on the outside of Canucks Twitter, merely because I tend to direct my opinions to a TV screen rather than on social media. That being said, lately my sister, Pass it to Bulis contributor and Botchford Project recipient, Natalie Hoy, has been encouraging me to listen to more Canucks-centric podcasts. It’s been a fun time.
2010s: Does Vancouver really need two all-sports radio stations? 2020s: Does Vancouver really need 741 Canucks podcasts?

The world of ‘audio blogging’ has only grown over the past few years. Listeners are able to multi-task - exercising, cooking, cleaning, driving or on public transit - while plugged in to a new episode on practically any personal device. It’s a form of entertainment, often interactive, and a perfect creative outlet for amateur (and experienced) broadcasters looking for a new project. There is no shortage of podcasts courtesy of Canucks Twitter, a testament to the commitment and drive of fans, and the accessibility of the art form. With the Qualifying Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs just about underway, there is much to be talked about. Let’s take a look at what’s out there.1
C4 Podcast
Founded: July 2013
Players: Chris Golden (@lyteforce), Anna Forsyth (@aforsyth03),Matt Lee (@mattlee_61)
Premise: The longest-running, active Canucks podcast (birthed from Canucks Hockey Blog) has been on-air for 7 years! Originally co-hosted by Chris and parody song creator Clay Imoo (@CanuckClay), the podcast offers commentary about current Canucks and NHL affairs, prospects, expectations, reminiscing on the team’s past (memories of the retired taco lover Eddie Lack and past playoff runs), and features interviews with guests. This past season, they’ve had Patrick Johnston (The Province), Satiar Shah (Sportsnet 650), Cam Robinson (Elite Prospects, Dobber Prospects) and Dan Murphy (Sportsnet) in the hot seat.

In the "longest-running" #Canucks #PodcastLikeThat, @risingaction joins @aforsyth03 @lyteforce & @mattlee_61 to talk about the summer training camp so far, how the Canucks match against the Wild, Rathbone, Tryamkin and so much more! https://t.co/ACreWPcPWC

Area 51
Founded: December 2019 (relaunch)
Players: Sean Warren (@SeanyeWest234), Samantha (@samanthacp_), Malcolm Ert (@malcolmert), Bradley Thomas (@bradthomas_96), Eric (@breakawayeric), Bailey Broadbent (@baileybroadcast)
Premise: Area 51 celebrated a relaunch last December since their inception in July 2019, and in May welcomed a team to join host Sean Warren. Aside from their cool, alien conspiracy branding, at the mic they cover a broad range of hockey talk with notable guests (writers and broadcasters in the media, content creators, musicians, WHL players, fellow blog/podcast owners, Canucks Autism Network). I love that they’ve started to cover important topics beyond the gameplay, like anti-racism, inclusivity, and diversity in sports, and have actively sought out the guests to do so.

Cap Space Wins Cups
Founded: February 2020
Players: Hassan Ahmed (@_hassanahmed9), Ahsan Ahmed (@ace103196), Hussain Ahmed (@hussain11ahmed)
Premise: The newly formed podcast has a light, humorous tone - evident by their inaugural episode introduction about their lack of social media followers. They cover quick hits of the Canucks week, roster situations, hockey culture, and of course, cap space. They’ve hosted fellow podcast hosts and media (Satiar Shah, J.D. Burke, Matthew Sekeres, Jeff Paterson), and even a fellow Burnaby kid, Massimo Rizzo. Rizzo was a 2019 Carolina Hurricanes draft pick. It’s clear they have a lot more to share, including takes in on their corresponding blog – see: How the Canucks Can Acquire Dougie Hamilton & Build a Cup Contender. I’ll read anything related to Dougie Hamilton.

The Broadscast
Founded: July 2020
Players: Vanessa Jang (@vanessajang), Georgia Twiss (@georgiatwiss), Samantha (@samanthacp_), Mallory (@sports_lesbian), Danielle Huntley (@danihuntley)
Premise: Your ‘local hockey girl gang’ talks Canucks, sports culture, and soap operas. All 5 hosts have a significant following on Twitter and are bold and uncompromising, which makes for great statements and table chatter. This was written with only their Teaser episode released, but you can expect no shortage of pop culture references, fashion discussion, NHL wives and girlfriends (WAG) and pet content, along with team analysis. It’s trailblazing for a group of females in Vancouver to start their own podcast that’s hockey-focused, meant to be a casual chat amongst friends. They know the team, know their media, can gossip, and are having fun with it.

PUCKS ON NET
Founded: September 2013
Players: Ryan Schaap (@schaaptop), Geeta Reddy (@geetanjalireddy), Paul McLellan (@McLellanPaul), Dave McPhail (@PucksOnDave)
Premise: The group of 4 has created a casual, honest atmosphere with their roundtable conversation. They’re good friends, which equates to great camaraderie. They run a ‘contradictory’ fantasy hockey league and don’t talk ‘fancy stats’ (while still being very knowledgeable). I think they’re engaged with their listeners, and relatable as human beings amongst their talk of Tim Hortons NHL trading cards, player safety, current signings and acquisitions, and Green Day at the All-Star Game. Reaching 7 years of consistent hockey talk and recapping the team’s evolution is a feat in its own.

And on Sunday, Ryan sat down with his old man for Father's Day to talk about growing up playing minor hockey in Calgary, bonding over the Vancouver #Canucks and even his words of wisdom when it comes to talking to your kids about drugs.https://t.co/BaQFM53Yws

The Canucks Conversation
Founded: November 2018
Players: Chris Faber (@ChrisFaber39), David Quadrelli (@Quadrelli)
Premise: Faber was joined by Quads in 2020, and the pair has perhaps the most praised local podcast so far. They’re both BCIT Radio Arts and Entertainment students (and writers for CanucksArmy), and their dedication, preparedness, branding and reporting level are top notch. They break down topics with great chemistry and perception - roster moves, Nikita Tryamkin, Olli Juolevi, and the Judd Brackett situation. Some of their notable guests include Utica Comets Kole Lind and Brogan Rafferty, and ‘bionic’ Finn Sami Salo.

Canucks & Pucks
Founded: April 2019
Players: Matthew Zator (@MatthewZatorSC)
Premise: Matthew Zator, writer for The Hockey Writers and Hockey Ops Director at Overtime Heroics, made a return to the airwaves this past July (after a lengthy regular season hiatus). Since getting back up and running, it’s full steam ahead – Zator has been joined by contributors from The Hockey Writers, The Canuck Way, college hockey newsletter Fresh Ice, and fellow podcast hosts. He has good insight and as a writer who goes into depth about NHL draft picks, the Vancouver Giants, and both the Nucks’ positives and negatives in his work, it gets noticeably transferred to the on-air conversation.

Players: Pete Edwards (@pete_gas), Doug (@dougvenn)
Premise: Pete and Doug are 2 “mildly educated Canucks die-hards” who chat about current team news and trending topics. They’ve covered trade talk, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, prospects at the World Juniors, scouting, and the BLM movement. They’re occasionally joined by guests including podcast friends, and fellow fans/Tweeters Chris Conte, Jenna Fabulous and Ray Hatt.

The LarschCast
Founded: June 2019
Players: Tej Dhaliwal (@DrTejDhaliwal), Sat Oberoi (@SatOberoi), Nav Dosanjh (@NavDosanjh1983), Ryan Cassels (@cassels_music)
Premise: The Larschcasters are known for their entertaining banter and debates, mostly on hockey and a little NFL. They’ve picked the minds of seasoned media (Scott Oake, James Duthie, Joey Kenward), legendary broadcaster Jim Robson, and former Canucks Kirk McLean, Chris Higgins and Shane O’Brien. They’ve been generating healthy content during the pandemic, including a spirited debate with Minnesota Wild podcast hosts, discussing media personnel moves, prospects, NHL Award contenders, and the toxicity in the Vancouver Canucks market. In June, they released a special with hockey coach/trainer Jennifer Chefero, sharing her story facing sexual abuse and harassment in her career, while candidly discussing women’s rights and sports culture.

The PP1 Podcast
Founded: October 2019
Players: Brayden Ursel (@bkursel23), Ted (@tee3ree), Ryan Hank (@always90four)
Premise: A tagline like “three guys from Kelowna bringing the heat and spitting the takes” doesn’t need further explanation. Appearing at the beginning of this season, the podcast (which features writers from The Canuck Way and CanucksArmy) has had some nice guests like the Canucks inaugural captain Orland Kurtenbach, retired centre and current Kelowna Rockets Assistant Coach Vern Fiddler, and Paul “Biznasty” Bissonnette. They’ve been nominated for Kelowna Now’s Best Local Podcast, and have a ‘Dudes and Guys’ segment where they pit 2 players against one another and talk it out (criteria is debatable).

The SCT Show
Founded: September 2018
Players: Nam Mann (@CanuckAgent007), Tanbir Rana (@TRana87)
Premise: SCT is Strictly Canucks Talk. Aside from reminiscing about ‘where were you when’ pivotal moments in franchise history occurred and the regular shop talk of performance and #NamStats, they draw in guests to talk about trade value (The Athletic’s Harman Dayal) and stickhandling (specialist/trainer Pavel Barber). They’ve also hosted local defenceman and last year’s 4th overall draft pick Bowen Byram, and hockey analyst/retired winger Anson Carter for a chat about the pressure of the market in Vancouver and the Sedins. Like any good heated debate, there are also trade and Team Tank vs Playoffs scenarios.

Johnny Canuck Talk
Founded: August 2019
Players: Adrian J. Haug (@adrianjhaug), Roy Styles (@roy_styles)
Premise: Takes from 2 arm chair GM’s, the pair discuss a wide variety of topics like losing streaks, hockey safety, report cards, line-ups, and trade deadline. They’ve also shared an insightful chat with Harman Dayal (The Athletic) about his career and the late and great Jason Botchford. It’s laid-back and conversational, with mentions of farmers’ tans, celebrating birthdays during quarantine, and the school system strung across introductions. What’s cool is they record the podcast from near and far away places – Kamloops, BC and Germany (!).

1 This list is not exhaustive, but there is something for everyone and I hope you find your Canucks fix. There can be an argument made that the podcast market is oversaturated, but I like to see it as an opportunity for any fan or audio bird to let their voice be heard! So, don’t be negative about it.

Season Episode Breakdown for Second Citadel (Part 1)
Based Solely off the poster and speculation thereof.
Thoughts under the cut, whitelist #bleepbloo theories if you’re not interested.
(At this time, 12/8/19, the first episode, ‘The Fool in the Garden of Death, Part 2’ has been released to the public; It will factor into discussion below. Spoilers Ahead, You Have Been Warned)
((Warning: VERY LONG, and has in-universe issues of Second Citadel))
Alright so, as based on the initial poster thoughts and the first episode in it’s entirety has been released, it confirms that we are going to be using the Major Arcana for each of the episodes, and that they will be in clusters of threes, for the most part. I will be analyzing each episode based on the trio presented, what that’ll mean for the episode, as well as the characters that may be highlighted as a result of the conflict presented.
Before I get started, here are some things to keep in mind:
I will be using only one website [here], because there are often minor variations between different Arcana decks that end up giving it different meanings overall; so if you go exploring into Arcana yourself, please note that that’s a thing. Also something to note about major Arcana is that the can represent People as well as Significant Issues in your Life. I won’t be listing the full meaning for each card, as that’s going to make this MUCH longer than I know it’s going to be; I will be listing the BASIC positive(Upright), negative(Reversed), and general concepts behind each card, just so you don’t have to look up the full meaning. As a result, I’m going to be splitting my analysis in half due to sheer length it would be otherwise.
With all that mind let’s get started:
1- The Fool, The Magician, and the High Priestess
Fool: The Day Dreaming Adventurer
Positive: New Beginnings, innocence, free spirit
Negative: Recklessness, inconsideration, taken advantage of
Magician: The Infinite Creator
Positive: Willpower, desire, Creation, Manifestation
Negative: Trickery, Illusions, Out of Touch
High Priestess: The one of the In-between
Positive: Intuitive, Unconscious, Inner Voice
Negative: repressed feelings, lost inner voice, lack of center
So, I know this episode has aired already, but it’s worth going over, if only we have an established base.
The sister’s at the garden of Death are probably dead. Marc realizes this, even if Olala doesn’t/can’t consider it - which, give her a break, she’s apparently like, 9 - and this thus has led Marc to try and figure out where to put her to hide, if only to buy more time.
In terms of representation, I’m sure Sister Teele(Tile? Tealy? IDK how to spell her name, going to call her Sister Mom) is(was) meant to represent the High Priestess, considering she’s meant to see between the spirits, and the should, will and could happen.
I’m less sure if Marc’s meant to represent the Magician or if the Kite is, simply because they use different tool sets of mechanical vs. magical.
(Side-note, but I do think it’s interesting that their titles as ‘creatures’ - with Marc being a Salamander and The Kite being The Kite - seem to signal to others that they are in some way associated with magic. Even though Marc’s only NOW gotten personally involved with Magic through Arum, he has known Rilla, who’s an exile for ‘magic’, even though she’s been unexiled through new laws, in comparison to the Kite, who’s very clearly a Witch. I absolutely do think we’re about to get some foiling regarding The Kite and The Salamander.)
((Also, semi-unrelated, regarding the bird to the East turning people into stone, and The Kite being disappointed that that isn’t true and that “it’s just an old wive’s tale” - if that ISN’T CLEARLY FORESHADOWING the OPPOSITE  to become true hopefully proven by someone from the East I will eat my goddamn pajamas.))
Here’s something I am sure of though; the more we see of the Kite on-screen, the more I’m sure that all 20 of the Sisters are dead.
I’d be more worried if Sister Telay was alive, however, because that means The Kite- whoever he is- is going to be using her to some end. The same as with the rest of them, if they’re still alive.
According to some research, however, The Kite apparently references a bird of prey- a hunter, which, y’know, explains the Axe of Wilds. Four of Wastes may be where Marc tries to take Olala, but then, they will encounter the Kite?
Really, it depends on where Marc decides to take her.
Something that continuing to worry me however, is the Death card that keeps popping up- because that is the card of Death, make no mistake - is a signal that something is going to end.
However, the Death card originally showed up when Olala asked what is her place in the universe; the Death card is in reference to /her/. The fact that, even now, when she has clearly escaped it (at least for the moment), doesn’t bond well for her survival overall.
Here’s something interesting, regarding the Fool card of our deck. It’s not necessarily a numbered card- it can show up anywhere in the deck, in theory. In some decks, it shows up at the beginning; other times, it shows up after the World card, signalling the start of a new beginning, even after the end.
Let that sink in. Let also sink in the knowledge that Olala- both in title, in name, and in her personality - is meant to be our “Fool”.
So I mean, I’m not saying Olala’s going to end up becoming a sacrifice to renew some cycle, but it’s not outside of the realm of possibility either. The universe CLEARLY has something in mind for her, something involving death (or if nothing else an ending) and thus a new beginning, but what it is, is hard to say at this point.
It is absolutely easy to say at this point, however, is that if Olala permanently dies, everyone’s going to ****ing riot.
2- The Empress, The Emperor, and the Hierophant
Empress: The Female Authority
Positive: Motherhood, Fertility, Nature
Negative: Dependence, Smothering, Emptiness, Nosiness
Emperor:  The Male Authority
Positive: Fatherhood, Authority, Structure, Control
Negative: Tyranny, Rigidity, Coldness
Hierophant: The Core Society
Positive: Tradition, Conformity, Morality, Ethics
Negative: Rebellion, Subversiveness, New Approaches
Here we get more into authority figures of the Arcana, and thus the society itself; the base of foundations that hold up any society. The mother, the father, and the society that binds us. Something I do believe we’re going to be seeing in this of episode are the parents of some of our Crew, as well as folks who have influenced them- like in Damien’s and Angelo’s Case, Sir Absolom, their mentor of knighthood.
If this isn’t the episode we meet Sir Absolom, I’ll be surprised. I’m also hoping that this is the episode where we find out how Marc got his Knighthood title, and whether Talfryn is a knight as well, since...well, given what we know about Marc’s fears regarding Tal leaving, and Tal worried about not being wanted in addition to knowing he doesn’t want to be a knight, I’m more than a touch worried about their relationship.
We should be able to explore - for whatever reason - why the Citadel is struggling through a shortage. I don’t know whether it’s a drought or what have you, but they’re clearly going through something, and as much as Mira can read, if you’ve never gone through a shortage before, things get rough quickly. Given Queen Mira is most likely meant to represent the Empress, well, she’s likely experiencing the more negative connotations of the card at the moment. I doubt a new solution will come quickly, if at all, and we’re going to be left uneasy just like in the first episode.
Which is going to be interesting, especially considering the Second Citadel’s whole thing about ‘Unity’ and how it’s all about the community versus personal desires.
Now, there’s likely going to be a rebel force that forms, maybe to oppose the Queen, because if people are hungry and angry, they’ll listen to anyone with influence that will promise them some food and protection and guidance, if the one currently providing isn’t doing that good of a job; which then ties back to the Hierophant, the society at large
Now, the question becomes this: who’s going to represent the Emperor?
At first glance and thought, you think it’s going to be Sir Absolom, but while I think there’s some basis for it, I actually think it’s going to be Damien’s Father. After all, when things are hard, people go to church and listen to the priest. And Damien’s Father is a noted missionary, and if nothing else, a FIRM believer in the Saints and their messages. If there isn’t some conflict between Damien and his Father regarding the messages of the Saints, especially when it comes to monsters, I will eat my pajamas.
So, to sum up: The episode is going to deal with authority figures, and them dealing with the conflicts that come up as a result of this shortage, as well as the power conflicts between the Empress and Emperor, as well as the overall society at large; when people are hungry, they get angry, and start looking towards anyone that’ll promise change.
3 - The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength
Lovers: Those we value
Positive: Partnerships, Duality, Union
Negative: Loss of balance, one-sidedness, disharmony
The Chariot: Movement
Positive: Direction, Control, Willpower
Negative: Lack of control, Lack of Direction, aggression
Strength: What lies inside
Positive: Inner strength, Compassion, Focus
Negative: Self-Doubt, Weakness, Insecurity
Something to note about the Lovers card; it does represent the traditional meaning of Lovers, but also represents close relationships in general. Like a sibling/friendship bond, like Tal and Marc, or Marc and Rilla, or Sir Caroline and Angelo, or Sirs Damien and Angelo. However, this is going to be a Sir Caroline/Quanyii and a Rilla/Damien/Arum episode for sure
Also, I know we’ve had that whole arc about Damien growing and maturing, but like. He’s still got a long way to go to being a better person, or if not a better person necessarily, then at least to try and recognize his flaws to be an even better person. As with Sir Angelo, Sir Caroline, Talfryn, Rilla, Arum - everyone’s got shit to work on.
The road to being a better person is recognizing flaws, and trying to improve, even if you fail a lot of the time.
Plus, Rilla and Damien, for all that they love and respect and prioritize each other, haven’t talked about what they want 1) for their marriage or 2) what they want their wedding to be like. Also, now there’s also Arum to consider, and what he wants from the relationship, is another added factor
It’s not a bad thing, it’s just another voice in the conversation; the bigger issue is that Rilla and Damien haven’t talked about it at all, so Arum’s just going to be- thrown into the ring as it were.
Which kind of sucks for Arum, considering he’s been I.D.’d as a hermit, by Helicoid “...then there are solitary beasts like that..(sounds of disgust)..Lizard and his House (The Hallowed Hall’s of Helicoid Part 2)” and Ernmark’s analysis (here).
I think we’re going to the inner strength of Talfryn and Marc come to something of a resolution regarding their differences, and Talfryn will start to figure out what he wants to do with his life.
I bet we’re going to see some stagnation in some characters, especially Sir Absolom, considering he really doesn’t like Marc.
In Summary: we’re going to get some resolution between Tal and Marc’s relationship, most likely a positive one, but a not so good one between Rilla/Damien/Arum, due to the Arcana of the next episode.
 4- The Hermit, The Wheel of Fortune, Justice
The Hermit: The Distance
Positive: Contemplation, search for truth, Inner guidance
Negative: Loneliness, Isolation, Lost your way
The Wheel of Fortune: The Changing Luck and Wheel
Positive: Change, Cycles, Inevitable fate
Negative: No control, clinging to control, Bad Luck
Justice: Exactly what it says
Positive: Cause and Effect, Clarity, Truth
Negative: Dishonesty, Unaccountability, Unfairness
Hey.
Hey.
Remember when I said Arum’s the Hermit? This is going to be an Arum focused episode, I can feel it. That being said, if Marc is worried about Arum and Rilla asks, Marc’s probably going to be tailing Arum, and so is Olala.
Remember, the major arcana both events and people,  so chances are, Justice is likely to be Sir Caroline. Why she’s following him, i can’t be sure, but clearly, a changing fortune and justice is occurring for Arum. Or something.
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and say that the Kite is a part of the changing fortune, and Olala’s going to get captured by him? It’s a little hard to say at this point what else the changing fortune is.
Still thinking about Olala and the Death card, I worry a little more regarding the ‘inevitable fate’ part of the Wheel of Fortune, especially since (again) Olala is specifically I.D.’d with Death.
In Short: This is going to be an Arum centric/focused episode. Marc will likely be nosy and follow, and because of Sir Caroline or something happening, Olala will fall into The Kite’s greedy, greedy and SUPER murderous hands. Clearly has something in mind for Olala, and boy, that worries me more than anything else.
~~~
That’s it for part 1, will put link to Part 2 [Here], when it’s finished.
Episode #252
WHAT THIS?
Tumblr media
Lisa the Treehugger Season 12 - Episode 4 | November 19, 2000 A bad episode. I resent it. This episode features some WB dipshit. I remember feeling betrayed by this episode because of the inclusion of a Dawson’s Creek boy. Like, I thought the show was turning into a show that panders to LITTLE SISTER types. Yuck! It’s not all bad. It does sorta resemble classic Simpsons. And looking back, it’s really not as offensive as all that. But the ending is lame, what with that dumb song set to “your land is my land” but about the Lisa tree going into the ocean. Like, remember when Homer sang the Flintstones theme but sang getting into a car-crash as it happened? It’s kinda like that, except non-diagetic and non-funny. I can’t think of this episode without thinking about the time somebody my age quoted the joke from this episode on myspace. “I’m a level 5 vegan. I won’t eat anything that casts a shadow”. It’s honestly not a bad joke. But they were like “CLASSIC EPISODE” and I was like “what the hell, no it isn’t” and I got into a fight with them. It was a girl and she had nice boobs. I could have been like “yeah you’re right this episode is a masterpiece” and then immediately be granted permission to suck on her large milkers. Probably had long nipples too. I coulda been deepthroating those sweater honkers to this day. Mighta married that woman. I coulda had two wives!
THE B-SODE:
Tumblr media
The Exciting Life of a Tree Short film | April 25, 1999 I was like “ah fuck, I have to watch a boring short film.” cuz I forgot what this was. Then I watched it and was like “oh it’s bill plympton! that’s cool!” and then I watched it and was like “oh nevermind it was boring.” damn. Oh well, I still love you Bill Plympton. I don’t mind that you called my president gay.
"I want...I want you with me Asuna, always. I want you to come with me...and I...I know that's asking a lot, but the truth is...I can't do this without you!”
-          Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya, Sword Art Online: Alicization (Ep. 01)
"Of course, I’ll go anywhere with you. It doesn't matter where, I’ll go."
-          Asuna Yuuki
The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 9-10, 2019. After a 3 year hiatus, Kirito and Asuna make their return to their US broadcast home in Toonami as Sword Art Online begins the highly anticipated Project Alicization story arc with a 1 hour season premiere. And among other great moments, Kirito enters yet another new game in the Underworld and befriends Eugeo and Alice, while Dragon Ball Super begins the Tournament of Power, and Kira hunts down Shigechi for finding out about his “limb secret”.
On Twitter, Sword Art Online was welcomed back with open arms as it trended in the US alongside JoJo’s, Black Clover, Hunter x Hunter, and Shippuden. Character trends were also spotted with Kirito, Shigechi and the Killer Queen (Kira’s stand name), as well as Shino (we’re not sure if it’s because of Shino from Naruto or Sinon/Shino Asada). On Tumblr, Toonami would trend alongside #BNHA, #JJBA, Attack on Titan and Naruto. The full list including statistics and tweet counts from the twitter app and Amr Rahmy’s analytics app can be seen below.
Tumblr media
This week’s feature was a new animated music video titled “So Many Feelings” by the Hip-Hop duo EARTHGANG. You can check it out below.
youtube
Some very unfortunate news in the voice acting front to say the absolute least, as Vic Mignogna, known amongst Toonami fans as the voice of Broly, Edward Elric, Ikaku, Rohan Kishibe, and that tentacle monster that assaulted Asuna during the Fairy Dance arc, has had various sexual harassment and sexual assault allegations come to light recently, including those from Monica Rial and Jamie Machi. As a result, Funimation has fired Vic after an internal investigation, joining Rooster Teeth in doing so.
With a new season of Sword Art Online comes a new cast of characters including those with the potential to join Kirito’s infamous harem. On Friday, Aniplex and Bang Zoom announced that the original cast will return, to be joined by Kayli Mills as the voice of Alice and Brandon Winckler playing Eugeo, taking on the roles as Kirito/Bryce’s newest “Sister-Wives” (or Brother-Husband) as Michelle Ruff jokingly calls themselves.
As I mentioned in my SAO premiere article back in October, Project Alicization will be a longer journey compared to previous arcs, with this season being around 48-52 episodes long. There are however, unconfirmed reports that there will be an off-season around the mid-way point similar to what we are seeing with Attack on Titan. The Japanese broadcast is scheduled to reach that point around March 30. We’ll let you know further details about the hiatus and the 2nd half’s airing once they are announced and what Toonami’s plans are once we reach those points ahead.
Tumblr media
Of course, there has been a lot of sour grapes from detractors saying that “Nobody wants SAO back on Toonami” and “SAO needs to be dropped so better isekai like Alternative GGO, Re:Zero, Log Horizon, Konosuba, and Overlord (among others) can be here instead”, among other things.” Yet Kirito has the last laugh in the end as SAO continues to remain as popular as it is and the previously mentioned shows haven’t even sniffed Toonami airwaves.
While I personally will show zero sympathy to those folks, for those who do want to see Alternative GGO and more isekai also join Toonami in addition to SAO, continue to support Toonami and its shows as well as politely letting Jason DeMarco and the crew know on Toonami’s Facebook and Tumblr ask boxes as well as Jason’s Ask.fm page. (Also do realize that Toonami will not be showing a SAO side story unless they show the mainline series as well, that just doesn’t make sense for various reasons.) As Bryce told me during my interview with him at the premiere, if SAO continues to succeed, perhaps fans and the Toonami crew could be hungry for more isekai shows and if Toonami continues to succeed, more shows can join the better cartoon show as well.
Tune in next week as Megalo Box returns from its week off, while Kirito continues to show that Bryce Papenbrook characters don’t die when they are killed, among other great moments. Until next week, stay gold.
Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold. The number next to the listed trend represents the highest it trended on the list (not counting the promoted trend), judging only by the images placed in the rundown. For the Twitter tweet counts, the listed number of tweets are also sorely based on the highest number shown based on the images on the rundown.
China fired back on coronavirus
China fired back on coronavirus
BEIJING: China fired back on Sunday (Feb 14) at the US over allegations from the White House that Beijing withheld some information about the coronavirus outbreak from World Health Organization investigators.
In a statement on Friday, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Washington had “deep concerns about the way in which the early findings of the COVID-19 investigation were communicated and questions about the process used to reach them".
“It is imperative that this report be independent, with expert findings free from intervention or alteration by the Chinese government," he said, referring to the WHO mission investigating the origins of the pandemic in the central city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus was first detected late in 2019.
"To better understand this pandemic and prepare for the next one, China must make available its data from the earliest days of the outbreak," Sullivan's statement said.
China responded with a statement from its Washington embassy on Sunday, saying the US had already “gravely damaged international cooperation on COVID-19″ and was now “pointing fingers at other countries who have been faithfully supporting the WHO and at the WHO itself".
While it welcomed President Joe Biden's decision to reverse the Trump administration's move to leave the WHO, China hopes the US will “hold itself to the highest standards, take a serious, earnest, transparent and responsible attitude, shoulder its rightful responsibility, support the WHO’s work with real actions and make due contribution to the international cooperation on COVID-19," the statement said.
Following allegations of Chinese withholding of data in the New York Times and other media outlets, investigation team member Peter Daszak tweeted, “This was NOT my experience on @WHO mission."
“As lead of animal/environment working group I found trust & openness w/ my China counterparts. We DID get access to critical new data throughout. We DID increase our understanding of likely spillover pathways," Daszak tweeted.
Another team member, Thea Koelsen Fischer of Denmark, also said that had not been her experience and implied some comments had been misrepresented in the media.
“We DID build up a good relationship in the Chinese/Int Epi-team! Allowing for heated arguments reflects a deep level of engagement in the room. Our quotes are intendedly twisted casting shadows over important scientific work," Fischer tweeted.
While in Wuhan, Koelsen Fischer said she did not get to see the raw data and had to rely on an analysis of the data that was presented to her. But she said that would be true in most countries.
The British-born Daszak, a zoologist who now works in New York, affirmed Fischer's remarks, tweeting: “It’s disappointing to spend time w/ journalists explaining key findings of our exhausting month-long work in China, to see our colleagues selectively misquoted to fit a narrative that was prescribed before the work began. Shame on you @nytimes."
Daszak had previously worked with the deputy director of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Shi Zhengli, to track down the origins of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, that originated in China and led to the 2003 outbreak.
He earlier told The Associated Press that the WHO team enjoyed a greater level of openness than they had anticipated, and that they were granted full access to all sites and personnel they requested.
The 10-nation WHO team last week departed Wuhan after nearly a month. It visited markets, hospitals and research centres, including the highly secure Wuhan Institute of Virology that has been the subject of speculation because of its large collection of bat virus specimens.
In their comments while in China, team members said they had some new insights into the origins of the pandemic that has killed more than 2.3 million people, but that major questions are still unanswered.
The mission was intended to be an initial step in the process of understanding the origins of the virus, which scientists have posited may have passed to humans through a wild animal, such as a pangolin or bamboo rat.
They said transmission directly from bats to humans or through the trade in frozen food products are also possibilities, but an alternate theory that the virus leaked from a Chinese lab was unlikely.
The WHO team’s visit was politically sensitive for Beijing, which is concerned about being blamed for alleged missteps in its early response to the outbreak.
An AP investigation has found that the Chinese government put limits on research into the outbreak and ordered scientists not to speak to reporters.
Girl Meets Season 4 - Episode 25
Girl Meets Season 4 - The Continuing Saga of Riley and her friends as they tackle their Sophomore year in High School. The ups, the downs, and everything in between. What will their sophomore year be like? Read and find out.
A/N #1: Here it is Part 1 of the 2-Part Finale
25. Girl Meets Hospital
A/N #2: Although rare, there are injuries that could incapacitate a baseball player.
This chapter also comes with a warning, this chapter contains material that could be sensitive to some readers, it concerns cutting, bullying, as well as thoughts of suicide.
 The beginning of the baseball season had come, and Lucas was up at bat, Riley was cheering with the cheerleaders, Zay was on third base, Farkle was calculating the probability of Lucas getting a home run while Smackle asked questions about the game. Maya ignored them all paying more attention to Josh who was watching the game while she told him something in his ear.
The pitcher threw the ball at his face with full force, and before Lucas could duck the ball hit him and knocked him out cold. Riley ran up to him to check on him but he was unconscious, but she kept calling his name while squeezing his hand. She watched as the paramedic took him away, rushing to go with him on the ambulance. Their friends not far behind as Josh drove them all to the hospital while Zay called Lucas’ parents telling them what had happened.
Riley cried in the waiting room, because the doctors said only family at the moment, everyone else couldn’t figure out what happened. Except Zay said to the coach that the pitcher had done it on purpose, the ball had clocked in at over eighty miles per hour straight to Lucas’ face. They ran test on Lucas all afternoon, as his parents showed up, as Riley’s parents came with food for everyone, as Zay’s mom sat next to them telling them everything will be alright. Riley just kept on crying.
  When Lucas woke up he was in his bed at home, but something felt different, his memories didn’t match what he saw. There was no picture of Riley and him at Coney Island from the summer before, it usually sat on his nightstand, there was nothing from his time at John Quincy, his trophies were labeled for a different school. There were no traces of his regular life and it seemed like he had been put in a different world. Farkle would tell him that alternate universes didn’t exist and that he should go back to sleep. When he reached for his phone, the model was different but the password was the same, Riley’s birthday, when he unlocked it all of the pictures were different. He was in a football uniform and not a baseball one, he was wearing a uniform for Thomas Jefferson High, Abigail Adams’ rival school.
“What’s happening?” he wondered pulling up his texts and seeing a multitude of girls asking for dates, but no messages from his friends.
“Lucas are you awake?” his father called. “I know you took a hit yesterday at the game but you can’t stay in bed all day.”
His door opened and his father walked in, for some reason he looked different, normally his father would have a hard edge to his voice from when he had been expelled, Riley had softened him a bit and they had gotten into a normal relationship. But the man in front of him looked like a completely different person.
“Ah you’re awake,” he said before sitting at the edge of the bed. “You should get ready for school.”
Lucas only nodded, he didn’t know what to say, something felt off and he couldn’t place his finger on the problem. It was Friday, or at least that’s what his phone said, which means they had a game the night before. He got up and went through the motions of getting ready, he said good morning to his mother only to see a middle schooler with her. He had a sister, and he didn’t know it, the girl had the same eyes as his but where his hair was more mixed brown and blonde, this girl’s hair was pure blonde.
“What’s up bro?” she said looking at him like he was staring too long.
Instead of saying anything he grabbed a banana to make his mother think like he was trying, grabbed his backpack and rushed out the door. His school ID was for Thomas Jefferson, but he went to the one place he had always went to in the morning to grab a muffin, but Topanga’s wasn’t there. Instead he was faced with a fast food restaurant that wasn’t open yet, so he walked on toward Abigail Adams hoping to find Riley, or Maya, or Farkle, hell Smackle would do but as he stood there watching the students all he saw were unfamiliar faces.
He had almost missed her, he wouldn’t have noticed if not for the fact that her hair still looked the same, and her face was a beautiful as ever, but she was alone, no Maya, no Farkle, she was dressed in black and had more make-up on than he had ever seen. Someone knocked into her and she lashed out at the person, a boy stood not too far from her, he looked just like her but taller, his head as curly as Mr. Matthews but lighter than Auggie’s. He was yelling at her for being rude but Riley only pushed him away and walked into the school.
He walked off towards where Thomas Jefferson was completely shocked, not knowing what he should do. Once inside, people joked with him as he went to his classes, he was popular at this school because he was the star quarterback and team captain. He was asked out by several girls but turned them all down and just kept going through the motions of his day. His teammates invited him to a party on Saturday, and he said yes only to get them to shut up. Everyone just thought he was in one of his moods, but they still pestered him throughout the day.
When school was over he was glad, he couldn’t stand the way everyone had treated him like he was everything in the world. He missed Zay cracking jokes, Smackle flirting with him only to make Farkle jealous, Maya pushing his buttons, and most of all he missed his sunshine, he missed Riley, his Riley and not the cussing dark girl he had seen. He had checked his phone several times, but Zay’s number wasn’t there, and when he had called Zay’s New York number a woman answered, and Zay’s Texas number was disconnected.
Wandering around he found himself in the library where he had told Riley that he wanted to be a veterinarian. He sat there hoping that the whole day was some elaborate scheme but it hadn’t been and now he was in a life he didn’t know anything about. He looked around the room and noticed that in a far off corner was a familiar orange turtleneck and a head of blonde hair.
“Farkle,” he said out loud, the librarian shushed him while Farkle looked at him like he had grown a third head. Lucas walked over as fast as he could sitting next to the genius, who was wearing an Einstein Academy uniform instead of his now signature boy band look.
“Do I know you?” Farkle asked looking at Lucas who was now sitting so close.
“Lucas Friar,” he said hoping to have some form of normalcy instead the genius started to pack up.
“You’re that football player aren’t you,” he said as he stowed away the last of his things. “We definitely don’t know one another.”
Lucas was trying to figure out how to gain his best friend’s attention when he just started talking without thinking. “Have you ever woken up and thought that everything was wrong, like nothing makes sense?”
“No,” he said as he tried to get up but Lucas pulled him back down.
“Listen to me for a minute please,” Lucas said his eyes pleading with him. “I woke up this morning and everything was wrong, you, Maya, Zay, Smackle, Cassie, and my Riley weren’t in my life, I don’t know what to do.”
“Lucas, I don’t know you,” he said looking at him confused.
“I just want to know what happened, all I remember was being at a baseball game, Riley was cheering me on, and you were calculating the probabilities of a homerun with Smackle… I got hit in the face with a baseball and the next thing I knew I was in the wrong place, even though it’s the same place. Everything I knew never existed.”
Farkle looked at him like he had grown a third head before shaking his head and standing up. “Come on lets go to my house to talk, the librarian is giving us a dirty look.”
Lucas followed feeling like his world was crashing down around him, when they reached Farkle’s almost everything was the same, except Maya’s bedroom wasn’t there.
“The train will be here in a minute,” Lucas said and Farkle looked at him.
“How do you know that?”
“I used to hang out here, with you and the girls, Zay would be playing that zombie game with Riley, with you and Smackle would do some weird experiment over there, I would play golf, while Maya drew something.”
“You really aren’t from here,” Farkle said looking around. “No one has ever been in this room, hell no one really remembers Maya, she moved away in the seventh grade.”
“They were your wives then,” Lucas sighed as he dropped down onto the couch. The train zoomed by only stopping for a moment to as the conductor asked Farkle a question before moving on. “Where is my normal life?”
“I don’t know,’ Farkle said as he sat down across from him. “I do know that a lot of things changed in seventh grade.”
“Can you tell me what happened?”
“Well, Riley started acting more and more like Maya in the seventh grade, then Maya and her mother moved to Arkansas to be closer to their family. Her mother gave up on acting because she realized it was causing her to miss her daughter growing up.”
“So she didn’t remarry?”
“Who Maya’s mom?”
“Yeah, where I’m from she married Shawn Hunter, and he adopted Maya.”
“No, actually she was a widow, her husband had died when Maya was little, and she decided that she needed to try and live her dream because life was too short. Except in the end it was causing Maya to act out because she never grieved for her father.”
“What about Riley? She was with this guy earlier, but he looked like her so I’m guess that either Auggie was born first or something.”
“No, that’s her brother Elliot, he’s two years older than her, he’s a senior at Abigail Adams, he’s their star everything, top student, athlete, debate club, student body president. Riley’s the middle child but her brothers kind of over shadowed her over the years, so she became like Maya and when Maya left she became worse. We all stopped being friends around the same time and I transferred to Einstein Academy. I haven’t talked to them since.”
Lucas couldn’t believe it, “This is too much for me.”
“I know, it’s weird, there’s no scientific explanation for any of this, but if what you say is true then there’s a world out there where Riley is a different person.”
“We all are,” he said frowning. “I have a sister that I don’t know, and the kids at school worship me, but for some reason I feel like some of them are on edge around me.”
“Well you’re kind of a bully,” Farkle said. “I know some kids who go to school with you and well they’re all afraid of you.”
“But that’s not me? I guess without Riley I’m not the best person am I?”
“Can you tell me? You know about your life?”
Lucas nodded and slowly told him about his life, the real life he lead where he went to the same school as all of them. Riley falling on his lap the first day of seventh grade, Farkle’s transformation in eighth grade, Maya’s constant name calling, even how Zay came to New York, and how Smackle joined them in high school. “You’re dating her you know, Smackle.”
“But we wouldn’t match, the probability of us being together is…”
“Farkle stop and think, you and Smackle were made for each other, you always said that like forces repel but the two of you aren’t alike at all, you just need to open your eyes to that.”
They talked for a while longer, Lucas sent a message to his mother that he was going to stay with a friend. He wanted a chance to figure it all out and Farkle was the best person to help him. The two of them looked over websites, social media, anything to try and jog his memory, but nothing worked. Lucas was stuck there and he didn’t know how to get back to where his life was as close to perfect as he could have asked for.
“Maybe you need to fix somethings for Lucas here?” Farkle suggested later that night.
“What like he needs to stop being a complete douche, and date Riley?”
“Riley might be the one thing that would bring this all together, maybe you’re here to fix what went wrong. Which means you need to learn as much as you can about the part of you that lives here.”
“But how?”
“Well what did you learn from going to school?”
“Everyone liked me, except the people who weren’t popular, all the girls asked me out, but according to my teammates I don’t like any of them so it gave me this rep as a bad boy who thinks no one is good enough for him.”
“Okay, so why wouldn’t the most popular guy in school date just anyone? Look through your phone, not the messages but the pictures. There’s something there.”
Lucas pulled out his phone and started going through the pictures like Farkle said, there were pictures with his teammates, and some girls, pictures from parties, and a folder labeled Her he opened it and saw nothing but pictures of Riley, all dating back to that day on the subway when she fell on his lap, but from the looks of the photos she had never turned around and saw him. He had ended up at a different school instead of John Quincy, but there were still pictures and pictures of Riley. From parties, to games where their schools played against one another, she was there but she didn’t look the same. As the pictures went on she wore darker clothes, and people weren’t around her. Even in this world Riley was his everything even if she didn’t know it.
“Wow, talk about stalker,” Farkle said. “I guess the best thing to do is show up at that party tomorrow, because most likely she’s going to be there.”
“She really is the center of my whole word,” he said, thinking of how she made him a better person, but without Maya, or Farkle, or even him Riley wasn’t the same person.
The two of them went to sleep soon after, and when Lucas woke up the next day and was still in Farkle’s room he knew that nothing had changed. He wasn’t home, he wasn’t in his New York, but if Farkle was right, Riley was the answer to everything. The two of them worked on a plan for him to get Riley, but they knew it was going to be hard. When they finished Lucas went home and changed his clothes for the party, saying a quick goodbye to his family as he rushed out the door.
  Riley sat in the waiting room, her heart pounding in her chest as everyone she knew came in and out, the doctor had told him that the ball had reached nearly 100 mile per hour when it hit Lucas, and at that rate injury was high, especially since it hit him when he wasn’t looking. They were checking for injury to see if he had a concussion, a clot in his head or even if it had blown his pupil. For all this to happen he needed to be sedated and most likely wouldn’t be awake until the next day. His parents stayed nearby, but Riley wouldn’t move from where they had wheeled him in. Baseball wasn’t supposed to be as rough as any other sport but there were still sever injuries and it frightened her.
She kept replaying the moment in her mind, all the other cheerleaders were pumping up the crowd but she had turned around the moment he went up to bat. She was cheering him on because she wanted him to know she was there, but the pitcher had thrown a fastball when Lucas had looked down, his head only turned to meet the ball face to face. Watching him fall to the ground, as Farkle and Zay ran towards him to check if he was alright had hurt as much as if the ball had hit her. She couldn’t move, as the referees walked up, as his family walked towards them. Everything had moved so slowly, but then she felt her heart beating and her feet moving forward, running towards him. Calling his name and getting no answer, she got on the ambulance on instinct. Watching them hook him up onto the machines, checking his eye, his head, she squeezed his hand to let him know she was there.
Even with everyone telling her it was going to be alright hours later, she couldn’t get the image of Lucas unconscious on the gurney. Her cheerleading uniform still on her, she didn’t want to move afraid that if she did everything that could go wrong would. In that moment her only concern was the boy on the subway who had changed her life in so many ways, and she never got the chance to tell him how much she loved him.
  The party was in full swing when he got there, all the football players greeted him with pats on the shoulder but he only had one goal, Riley. It took him a while to find her, she was in a corner of the room sipping on something inside of a red solo cup ignoring the rest of the room. Her brother was on the other side of the room talking with some girl, so Lucas took a chance and walked over to Riley.
“Hey,” he said but she rolled her eyes and turned the other way. This Riley didn’t do the Hi, Hey, Hi, that his Riley did. “Can we talk?” he asked as loud as he could without shouting.
“Why the hell would I talk to you?” she said before walking out the backdoor.
“Riley we need to talk,” he said trying to catch up to her through the crowd of people. “Please.”
He knew that the Lucas of this world liked Riley, but he didn’t say anything to her, he was content with watching her from afar. He grabbed her arm and pulled her out the side gate towards the street.
“Let go of me,” she said pulling her arm trying to get away.
“We need to talk,” he said as they reached a park and he sat her down on the swings. “This is important.”
“Right, like the big bad popular football player had anything to say that would explain him dragging a girl out of a party and to an isolated park.”
“I love you,” he said trying to get her attention. He felt bad for the Lucas from this world because he blurted out this secret crush without thinking. He hoped that the memories would be there when the guy came back, but he wanted his Riley, and he knew he loved her more than anything even if he didn’t tell her, even though he should have.
Riley laughed at him and then her face turned serious. “I don’t play games big boy, now leave me the hell alone.”
“Riley please,” he said. “What do I have to do to get you to understand that I telling the truth?”
She ignored him and kept walking away. The only thing he could hope at that moment was that Riley was still the same girl who left her bay window unlocked. He rushed towards her place, the apartment was still the same, but there were no flowers on the fire escape, no sign of the old Riley. There was a light on and she sat there looking out, so he knew he was in the right place, so he climbed the ladder and walked up to her floor trying not to make too much noise. Her window was open letting the spring air into her room but when he saw inside it wasn’t the same.
The room which had been bright and airy, with blue and purple everywhere, was black and red, from where he was all he saw was the small things that had meant that somewhere in there was the old Riley. His Riley. A purple cat in the corner, Berry the Bear Bear on the chair, and Riley’s desk in the corner near the door. The brunette sitting there, it took him a moment to realize that she had pulled her sleeve up, her arm covered in cut after cut. She had pulled out a blade and was about to cut herself again when he burst through the window and took it away from her.
“Stop,” he said as he threw it across the room. “Don’t do it.”
“What the hell are you doing here?” she screamed and he wondered if anyone would hear her. “Get the fuck out.”
“No,” he said pulling her close. “You can’t do this to yourself… Riley you can’t hurt yourself.”
“No one will care,” she said yelling at him as she pulled away and walked towards where the blade landed. He grabbed her again and pulled her close. “Stop it,” she yelled. “You don’t even know me.”
“I know you like cuddle bunnies, but you don’t tell anyone anymore because they would make fun of you. I know Berry the Bear Bear is your favorite childhood toy because your parents gave it to you before your brother Auggie was born, when you were home sick. I know Maya is your best friend in the world, and I don’t understand why she’s not here to stop this,” Riley started crying in his arms as he spoke. “You love purple cats, and you think you don’t have a talent while everyone else is good at something, even though I know you love to write about everything.”
“What are you a stalker,” she said as she sniffled, her body shaking in his arms.
“No… Well I don’t think so, but I do know that for some reason I can’t seem to date anyone else, and I’m a total jerk to everyone, but your face is all I want to see in the morning.”
“Oh please, you’re just saying that because my brother is your rival,” she said but he knew her voice wasn’t as cut throat as before. “No one cares about me.”
“Are you sure?”
“My parents praise my brothers but don’t say anything nice to me, they’ll make sarcastic remarks like how my brother is the best student but I’m good at sleeping. I have a perfect GPA, but my little brother is a prodigy. No one cares about Riley Matthews, I shouldn’t exist, hell my parents liked Maya better than me when she was still in New York, they praised her for being an Amazon Warrior but I was just the klutzy girl who tripped all over school.”
“That’s not who you are to me,” he said as he took her towards the bay window. “To me you’re a bright spot in my day, you are serious but you want the best for everyone, when you smile it’s like the sun is shining and my heart skips a beat.”
“Lucas you don’t know me,” she said but it was almost a whisper.
“I could prove to you that your life is worth something,” he said before he kissed her on the forehead. “People care, you just have to let go of the sadness and let them into your heart.”
They didn’t talk for a while, they just sat there in each other’s arms, for some reason it felt as if she was using him as an anchor, to keep her grounded to something. This Riley was falling apart, and he couldn’t understand why no one saw it.
At around midnight he realized that she had fallen asleep in his arms, so he scooped her up and tucked her into her bed. He turned to leave when he realized that she had grabbed his arm.
“Don’t leave,” she said in a quiet voice. Normally her father kicked him out around nine, but neither one of her parents came in to check on her at all.
“Where’s everyone?” he asked curious to know what was different about this version of the Matthews.
“Auggie’s probably sleeping, my parents are at some party they left a babysitter here for Auggie, I came in and just went straight to my room, and Elliot of course was at the party.”
“Do you parents check in with you before bed?”
She shook her head, “Not since Maya left,” she said her voice tired.
“What do they do?” he asked curious to see if they were the same people he knew, because for some reason something wasn’t right if they let her get to the point where she was cutting herself.
“My mom’s a lawyer, she’s the head of the firm that’s number one on Wall Street, my dad is a banker, and he works for one of the big ones, although I usually forget which one.”
That’s how he knew that everything was different, Mr. Matthews wasn’t their teacher, and Mrs. Matthews wasn’t defending the little guy. The café didn’t exist, and Riley had a brother who was the best at everything to the point where he overshadowed his sister. Maybe he needed to fix both himself and Riley before it was too late.
They talked about silly things for hours after that, and Lucas knew she was fighting to stay awake. Riley still loved cuddle bunnies, and unicorns, but her life had taken a dramatic turn when she started high school. After being bullied in middle school she had closed herself off, but the bullies had followed only now they had crushes on her brother. She didn’t make any friends because all of the girls all wanted to get close to Elliot, forgetting that she was there. When she didn’t do what they said they would push her into the bathroom stall and throw water on her until she was soaked through. They would spread rumors about her throughout the school, about how easy she was but they also said that because of that she had an STD that changed depending on the week or month.
They fell asleep next to each other after talking for what seemed like hours. When they woke up hours later, he could tell that Riley felt shy about him being there, he knew that it had something to do with what he had seen. He needed to know the why’s of what was happening in this world, and he needed to do it fast because he didn’t know how long he had here.
“Can I ask you something,” he said sitting up on her bed. “Why do you cut yourself? I know you have bullies and the school worships your brother, but why would you do that?”
“Some days, I think it’s because,” she hesitates looking down at her hands, she pulls down the sleeves of her black sweater. “It’s because I keep trying to prepare myself for eventually getting to the point where I want to die.”
Her voice was barely a whisper but he had heard her loud and clear and it hurt him to hear her say those words. This was Riley, regardless of whether or not this was his life, she was meant for so much more than what she doing in that moment. Instead of saying something, he pulled her into a hug and held her there for what seemed like forever. He felt as her body started shaking, as she started crying in his arms. This is something she was missing and he hoped that they would be able to move forward together. He hoped that the version of him in this world would protect her at all cost.
