This Toonami Trending Rundown is for the month of July and the week of August 2-3, 2025. Momo and Okarun’s ghost and alien adventures have finally made it to the Absolution as the hit anime series Dandadan has made its debut on the better cartoon show.

For the night of July 5-6, Toonami held a marathon of all 10 episodes of  My Adventures with Superman season 2 to coincide with promotion for the upcoming theatrical release of James Gunn’s Superman (2025). And the following week on July 12th, Toonami marathoned all 13 episodes of Lazarus to commemorate the show’s completion, this time in Japanese (with English Subtitles). As both nights were marathon nights, no Toonami related trends were spotted on social media.

For the night of July 19-20, #Toonami would trend in the United States on Twitteralongside Dragon Ball Daima and Bleach TYBW. Meanwhile on Tumblr, #Toonami trended alongside Bleach. The following week on the night of Dandadan’s premiere on July 26-27, #Toonami trended on the USA on Twitter alongside Dragon Ball Daima, Dandadan, Bleach TYBW (with Orihime also trending for some reason) and Blue Exorcist. And on the night of August 2-3, #Toonami trended on the U.S. on Twitter alongside Dragon Ball Daima, Dandandan, and BleachTYBW. Dandadan and One Piece also trended on Tumblr.

Alongside a brand-new look and branding for the first time since 2021, the feature for July 26-27 was a new “Criminal Threats” promo. You can check it out below.

Meanwhile, the feature for August 2-3 was a game review for Doom: The Dark Ages. It received a 9.0/10 score.

Summer marks the peak of the anime and comic convention calendar, and I (along with several of my colleagues) were busy attending both Anime Expo and San Diego Comic-Con during the month of July. Among some of the news released during the month included a new trailer for Rooster Fighter, which will be premiering on Toonami come Spring 2026.

I’ll have a report on some of the Toonami-related events that took place during the conventions in addition to an interview with Michelle Ruff, the voice of Rukia in Bleach, in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that and more. In the meantime, I was invited to last month’s episode of the Toonami Squad Podcast Sessions as we discussed some of what we saw during Anime Expo.

Finally, with Blue Exorcist coming down the stretch of the Kyoto Saga, you might be wondering when is season 3 coming to Toonami? Good news, on Friday, Toonami and Aniplex have announced that the Shimane Illuminati Saga, the third season of Blue Exorcist, will be kicking right off on August 23 at 1:30 a.m. EDT, a week after the Kyoto Saga reaches its conclusion on August 16.

On a related note, there was also some confusion of if Naruto would continue on Toonami as it was originally omitted from the Toonami schedule during the Blue Exorcist season 3 announcement. However, that omission turned out to be an error and (unlike his son) Naruto will continue to complete the Toonami lineup every Saturday at 3:00 a.m. EDT for the foreseeable future.

Dan Da Dan makes its Toonami debut on July 19, 2025

The hit anime series Dandadan by Yukinobu Tatsu will reach Toonami beginning on July 26 @ 12:30 a.m. EDT.

The Toonami Trending Rundown is a double feature for the weeks of June 21-22 and 28-29, 2025 as Lazarus reached its dramatic finale.

For the night of June 21-22, on Twitter, #Toonami trended in the United States alongside Lazarus, Dragon Ball Daima, and Bleach TYBW. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr. For the night of June 28-29, the night of Lazarus’ finale, the trends list would be similar to the previous week, though the word “Daima” also trended in the US, and Bleach trended on Tumblr in place of Toonami.

In anticipation for the final episode, Studio MAPPA released this key visual of the Lazarus Five trying to escape the rain.

And following the release of the final episode, Studio MAPPA released another Lazarus key visual featuring the Lazarus Five advancing across a city crosswalk.

In an interview with the Toonami Faithful Podcast, Jason DeMarco revealed some interesting tidbits regarding Toonami for the first time since he left social media.

During Lazarus’ run, fans gave Jason flack over a (mistranslated) interview of Shinichiro Watanabe from Mantan Web in April 2025, where fans got this from a Google Translated version of the article: “When I asked if something like ‘Space Dandy’ would be okay [『スペース☆ダンディ』みたいなやつでいい？と聞いたら], he said, ‘No, something more serious. [ノー、もっとシリアスなやつで]’ The only thing that mattered was that the order was ‘serious,’ so we were given freedom in our production.“

In response, Jason DeMarco clarified: “And by the way, I want to use this opportunity to just say: No, he did not suggest to me to do Space Dandy Season 2. […] If he had suggested it, I would have said absolutely yes, let’s do it. That article was a mistranslation of what he said in that article. I did not prevent Space Dandy 2 from happening. If ever he were to come to me and say, ‘I want to do Space Dandy Season 2,’ I would kill myself to try to make that happen. He asked me, ‘Do you want a comedy or a drama?’ And I said, ‘A drama.’ So I’m guilty of that, but I’m not guilty of killing Space Dandy, and I refuse to take [responsibility!]“

Given that Space Dandy didn’t do so well in Japan during its original run back in 2014, it’s understandable that both Watanabe and Toonami wanted to take a different direction for what would become Lazarus. However, Space Dandy’s popularity and acclaim (outside of Toonami viewers) has improved in recent years, and Jason has said he would be open to a continuation of Space Dandy, and possibly any other future production Watanabe has in mind.

Amongst the reasons Toonami is facing difficulties with acquiring programming, Japanese distributors are increasing having more rights, and thus having more of a say, to how their shows are being marketed. Meaning for stuff Toonami produces to promote a show, such as promos, topicals, and music videos, Toonami needs to get final approval from the respective show's producers, which of course takes additional time and money. This may also be a reason why the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll don't promote their shows as often as fans would want them to, especially given that those services are often time constrained by simulcast schedules. Which to the eyes of a fan, seems a bit counterintuitive, given that overall promotion of anime to casual and more mainstream audiences has historically been a weak point for the industry overall. Though given how other anime broadcasters and streamers have historically not been as good at promoting and presenting anime titles, it’s probably understandable that anime producers might want a bit more of a say.

Combined with the massive layoffs and overall upheaval at Warner Bros Discovery (meaning that there is less manpower to get these licensing deals done), to say nothing about the ongoing upheaval in the anime industry in general, the increasing costs to license a show, and exclusivity holds for a program (aka. Netflix jail and the like) amidst the ongoing streaming wars, and you can see why Toonami is having a tough time trying to get programming right now.

Jason also mentioned that Bleach eventually returned to Toonami thanks to persistence from the Toonami crew after being repeatedly told no. As with any show, if you do wish to see a particular show join or rejoin Toonami, we always recommend to keep watching and showing your support to the block and send your show requests to Toonami’s Facebook (as Jason DeMarco has recently closed all of his social media accounts) as well as letting the respective licensors know through their respective social media outlets. As we’ve seen time and again throughout Toonami’s history, nothing is impossible, persistence is key, and good things come to those who wait.

Next week will be the 4th of July weekend, and for anime fans in particular, Anime Expo will also take place in Los Angeles. To commemorate the sixth anniversary of the Demon Slayer anime, and in anticipation for the upcoming Infinity Castle movie trilogy, Aniplex will host a Demon Slayer event on July 4th at 10:30 a.m. in the Peacock Theater “celebrating the music of the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc performed live, plus a special performance from Natsuki Hanae the Japanese voice of Tanjiro Kamado!”

For those who are watching Bleach via the simulcast, the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War panel will be a must attend. Viz Media plans to “showcase exclusive content, including special commentaries, plus exciting new announcements about the final part” in addition to Bleach-related games, prizes, and swag. The panel will take place on Friday, July 4 at 4:45 pm on the JW Platinum Ballroom.

After a nearly six-year hiatus, One-Punch Man is set to make its anime return with its long awaited third season scheduled to premiere on October 2025. The One-Punch Man panel will take place on Saturday, July 5 at 12:00 p.m. at the JW Marriott Diamond Ballroom, featuring Saitama voice actors Makoto Furukawa and Max Mittelman, Garou voice actor Greg Chun, Manga Editor Toshiaki Oshima, and producer Chinatsu Matsui. In addition to some new information regarding season 3, as part of the panel, everyone in attendance will get the chance to participate in a Guinness World Record attempt performing Saitama’s killer move, the Maji Naguri/Serious Punch.

With Lazarus coming to an end, the next Toonami original series on the dock (that we know of) will be Shu Sakuratani’s Rooster Fighter. During the Viz Media panel on Saturday, Viz is teasing some “cluckin’ exciting Rooster Fighter news AND a sneak peek at episode 1.” The panel will take place on Saturday, July 5 at 12:30 pm in Room 403AB.

Finally, for the 4th of July weekend on July 5, Toonami will have a My Adventures with Superman marathon of all 10 episodes of Season 2 to coincide with promotion for the upcoming theatrical release of James Gunn’s Superman (2025).

And the following week on July 12th, Toonami will marathon all 13 episodes of Lazarus starting from 11:00 p.m. EDT, this time in Japanese (with English Subtitles).

The Toonami Trending Rundown for June 7-8 and 14-15, 2025. The Dragon Ball franchise returns home as Dragon Ball Daima finally makes its premiere on the Saturday night lineup.

For the night of June 7-8, #Toonami trended in the U.S. on Twitter alongside Bleach TYBW and Blue Exorcist. #Toonami also trended on Tumblr alongside Bleach and One Piece. A week later on the night of June 14-15, #Toonami trended in the U.S. on Twitter alongside Lazarus, Dragon Ball Daima, and Bleach TYBW. #Toonami trended on Tumblr alongside Sailor Moon.

This week’s feature was a game review for The Midnight Walk by Moon Hood Studios and Fast Travel Games. It received a 9/10 score.

The Annecy Festival took place in France last week, and Cartoon Network revealed some notable future programming for the channel in the future. Of interest for Toonami viewers, Adult Swim has announced that the Ninja Kamui has been renewed for not just a second season (titled Red Vendetta), but a third season as well. In addition, Season 3 of Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal will premiere on Adult Swim in early 2026.

Finally, a little programming note: As Dragon Ball Daima’s premiere was 45 minutes long, Bleach and every show after started 15 minutes later than usual on the 14th. So, for June 21 onward, Toonami has confirmed that the schedule will return to its regular times. In addition, for the 4th of July weekend on May 5, Toonami will have a My Adventures with Superman marathon of all 10 episodes of Season 2. A move done in tandem with promotion for the upcoming theatrical release of James Gunn’s Superman (2025) on June 11th and is also great for those who want to (re)watch the show with season 3 in production. Or for those who can’t watch due to holiday travelling, attending Anime Expo or another convention or whatnot, no need to worry.

For those who have been wanting more Lycoris Recoil, Aniplex has released six anime short films centered on the daily lives of Chisato, Takina, and the LycoRico crew. Titled Lycoris Recoil: Friends are thieves of time, these shorts can be viewed both subbed and dubbed on Aniplex USA’s YouTube Page and on Crunchyroll.

The illustrious legacy of Dragon Ball on Toonami is set to continue, as it was announced on Toonami’s Facebook page that Dragon Ball Daima will finally be making its way to the Toonami lineup on June 14th at 12:30 a.m. EDT. To make way, Bleach and Blue Exorcist will move down the lineup by 30 minutes each to air on 1:00 and 1:30 a.m. EDT respectively, while One Piece will be reduced to airing one episode a week at 2:00 a.m. In addition, as the first episode of Daima will be 45 minutes long, Bleach and every show afterwards will air 15 minutes later than usual.

“Okay then, let’s get this over with.” -          Ichigo Kurosaki, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War (Ep. 01)

This Toonami Trending Rundown is for the nights of May 17-18 and 24-25, 2025. The 13th anniversary of the Better Cartoon Show’s revival would feature the return of some familiar faces. After years of waiting, Toonami fans finally got to see the long-awaited return of Bleach with the start of its final arc, the Thousand-Year Blood War, while Blue Exorcist begins the Kyoto Saga.

For the night of May 17, #Toonami would trend in the United States on Twitter alongside Lazarus, #BleachTYBW and Blue Exorcist. Meanwhile on the night of May 24, #Toonami and #Lazarus would trend in the U.S, while Sailor Moon trended on Tumblr.

This week’s feature was a game review of Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist. It received an 8.5 out of 10 score.

Luffy and the Strawhats have been making their presence in sporting and entertainment events as of late, with collaboration events with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, the Boston Red Sox, and the Las Vegas Sphere.

On Anime Expo week on July 3rd, Toei will partner with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a One Piece themed night at Dodger Stadium.

Speaking of Anime Expo, Viz Media is beginning to release some of their plans for the big show in L.A. in July, and among what to watch for will include new information regarding the fourth and final cour of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War as well as Toonami’s newest original series Rooster Fighter. After a six-year hiatus, One-Punch Man is set to return for its third season this coming October 2025. VIZ Media has announced that they have licensed the series for distribution in the Americas and Oceania, as they have with the previous two seasons. The Toonami Trending Rundown is a triple-feature for the broadcasts of April 26-27, 2025 as well as May 3-4 and 10-11, 2025. These three weeks featured among other things, episodes 4-6 of Lazarus in addition to the season one finales of both Blue Exorcist and Common Side Effects.

For the nights of April 26-27 and May 3-4, #Toonami trended in the USA on Twitter alongside Lazarus, Common Side Effects, and Blue Exorcist. And on the night of May 10-11, after the premiere of Lazarus episode 6, Toonami marathoned all six episodes of the show that have aired up to that point the commemorate the halfway point of the season and to allow newcomers to the show to catch up on the series. In terms of trending, #Toonami trended in the US alongside Lazarus.

The Toonami Trending Rundown for April 12-13 and 19-20, 2025. Among other moments, fans got to enjoy the second and third episodes of Shinichiro Watanabe’s new series, Lazarus. During the April 12th broadcast, Toonami showcased a sneak preview of Season 2 of The Last of Us, now airing Sundays at 9pm EDT on HBO and Max. You can check it out below:

May 10th will see a marathon night of Lazarus. Following the premiere of episode 6 at midnight, Toonami will marathon all six episodes that have aired up to that point, for those late to the party or just want to rewatch the series right before the halfway point of the season. And on that note, for those wanting to see the Japanese language version of Lazarus, the first two episodes are now available to view stateside on Max, with new episodes released subbed on Thursdays, four days following the Saturday broadcast. While this is a bit earlier than the original plan of releasing the sub “30 days after their English-language premiere” as reported by Variety, this has caused some controversy amongst viewers watching via the sub, given that the show airs in Japan on Sunday night, meaning that it is not a true simulcast.

With the encore run of Blue Exorcist’s first season soon reaching its finale, Toonami has announced some big news for the lineup, including the return of not one but two shows that fans have been awaiting continuation since 2014. On Friday morning, it was announced that on May 17th, not only Toonami announced that Blue Exorcist season 2, the Kyoto Saga, will finally make its debut on the better cartoon show at 1:00 a.m. EDT/PDT; it was announced that Bleach’s Thousand Year Blood War arc has been “freed from Disney+/Hulu Prison” and will finally get to be showcased to Toonami viewers 12:30 a.m.

Tune in tonight for the penultimate episode of Blue Exorcist season 1, and a special presentation of Shinbangumi from the musical band Ginger Root at 3:00 a.m. EDT, among other great moments. This Toonami Trending Rundown is for the month of March 2025 and April 5-6, 2025. These past few weeks would culminate in the World Premiere of Shinichiro Watanabe’s newest show, Lazarus.

Throughout the month of March, #Toonami would trend in the US on Twitter on all five Saturdays Toonami aired on the month. Blue Exorcist would trend in the US in all Toonami broadcasts alongside it with the exception of March 1-2. Meanwhile on Tumblr, Naruto would trend on March 1-2, while #Toonami and Sailor Moon trended on March 8-9.

And during Lazarus’ world premiere on the night of April 5-6, #Toonami and #Lazarus would trend on the USA on Twitter, while Naruto trended on Tumblr. And in a new first, Lazarus would also trend on BlueSky, the first for Toonami on the fledging social media site since they introduced trending topics back in December.

Also, Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and OD fame, is apparently a big fan of the show so far.

The feature for March 15 featured a new Toonami ID titled “Laser SARA.” You can check it out below.

And March 22 featured a Video Game review of Rogue Waters by Ice Code Games and Tripwire Interactive. It received an 8/10 score.

Milan Records has released some of the music from Lazarus’ original soundtrack this past week. With three separate soundtracks from Kamasi Washington, Bonobo and Floating Points respectively, these tracks are available to view now on many major streaming outlets.

For those who have been wanting some more Lycoris Recoil, Aniplex and A-1 Pictures plan on releasing six original short stories, titled Lycoris Recoil -Friends are thieves of time-. Depicting the new daily lives of Chisato, Takina, and the workers at Café LycoReco, these shorts will be released stateside weekly on Aniplex USA’s YouTube page every Wednesday starting April 16.

On a programming note, Toonami’s schedule will stay the same through the month of April, but on April 26 at 3:00 a.m. EDT, the block will wrap up with a one hour special from special musical guests Ginger Root with their visual album, Shinbangumi.

On this day 13 Years ago, when the clock struck midnight to begin April Fool's Day 2012, was "The Night no 90's Kid Slept." When @adultswim revived @toonami after 4 years being off the air.

Starting a movement leading to Toonami's return on May 26, 2012, and helped jumpstart an anime resurgence in the west after the late 2000's bubble burst.

The Toonami Trending Rundown for February 2025. This month was headlined by the season 1 finale of Mashle: Magic and Muscles, among other great moments.

For the night of February 1, only Naruto managed to trend on Tumblr, which may not have been helped that the bombshell Luka Dončić–Anthony Davis trade was announced at the same time that dominated the social media talk. For the night of February 8, Toonami trended in the United States on Twitter alongside Mashle and Blue Exorcist, while Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece and Naruto trended on Tumblr. A week later on February 15, Toonami trended in the US alongside Mashle for its season finale, Blue Exorcist and Sailor Moon, while One Piece trended on Tumblr. And finally on February 22, #Toonami trended in the USA alongside Blue Exorcist.

Of course, there is a second season of Mashle, titled The Divine Visionary Candidate Exam Arc, which aired in Japan from January 6 to March 30, 2024. Unfortunately, we’re gonna have to wait a bit longer for if and when Season 2 hits Toonami airwaves at this time. For the interim, at least until Lazarus arrives in April, Toonami will be rerunning FLCL Grunge followed by FLCL Shoegaze at midnight for the next six weeks. In addition, Toonami will be airing reruns of the new Adult Swim original series Common Side Effects at 12:30 am ET.

Back during the Fate 20th Anniversary Memorial Talk Show in Los Angeles on November 23, Aniplex announced that Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] would be headed to cable television in 2025. The announcement raised eyebrows, especially when Aniplex did not clarified any further where and when this would be occurring, in comparison to previous announcements. Hinting that either Aniplex was under a gag order from Fate’s producers from saying it’s going to Toonami until the time comes, or another network is working on creating their own anime TV block to air their wares in the coming months. Turns out that it would be the latter, and for the first time in over a decade, Toonami has competition in the linear TV scene.

AXS TV (formerly HD Net) has announced the “Anime.​com Hour”, which airs Thursdays at 10 pm ET/7 pm PT starting on February 13 (with an encore on Saturday at the same time). At this time, their lineup will consist of Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], and My Hero Academia (seasons 1-2) starting from the beginning, each airing a doubleheader hourly, switching every two weeks.

Throughout the history of anime in the west, and especially during the last anime boom, many media conglomerates have attempted to create their own anime block or even their own anime network to try and take some of Toonami’s thunder. These include G4 Tech TV’s Anime Unleashed, SyFy’s Saturday Anime and later Ani-Monday, CW’s 4KidsTV, the Funimation Channel, Viz Media’s Neon Alley, and ADV’s Anime Network. On the other hand, whether it was due to lack of promotion, a failure to win over the crowds, executive meddling, and what not, none of these rival blocks have been able to replicate the success, longevity, and culture that Toonami has. Furthermore, the Anime.com hour is co-run and sponsored by Azuki NFTs, which could be a red flag for those who are not fans of crypto and “tech bro” culture.

Time will tell if AXS can learn from the mistakes of those that tried before and make their own spot in the anime scene or will fall by the wayside like other Toonami competitors before them, but we do wish them the best of luck.

The Toonami Trending Rundown for the month of December 2024. The better cartoon show brought an end to 2024 by showcasing the second half of Invincible Fight Girl’s first season, among other great moments.

For the night of December 14, #Toonami trended in the USA on Twitter alongside Invincible Fight Girl, Mashle, and Blue Exorcist. A week later on the 21st, #Toonami trended in the USA alongside Invincible Fight Girl for its season finale. Meanwhile for the final Toonami Rewind on December 27, fans were able to send off the throwback block with a bang as #ToonamiRewind trended in the US.

Invincible Fight Girl’s creators are hoping to see a continuation of the show, though Cartoon Network has neither confirmed or denied if the series will be renewed or will be canceled. Hopefully a second season will be the case, but all we can do for now is to keep supporting the show, its creators, and Toonami as a whole and checking out reruns on Max and Adult Swim/Toonami and on on-demand, official digital downloads, and physical media when and if that becomes available.

Kodansha has revealed a new trailer and new information for the upcoming third season of Fire Force. Season 3 will be split into two cours, the first premiering in Japan and on Crunchyroll on April 2025, while the second premieres in January 2026.

Studio MAPPA also released some new information regarding Lazarus, including a key visual and the theme music for Shinichiro Watanabe’s newest series. The opening theme is titled Vortex by Kamasi Wasahington, while the ending theme is Lazarus by The Boo Radleys. The Japanese cast was also revealed, starring:

Adult Swim has announced that the series would be coming to Toonami this April 2025.

Unfortunately, as 2024 comes to a close, Adult Swim has decided to pull the plug on Toonami Rewind as the Friday afternoon throwback lineup will be retired come January, with said timeslots being given back to Checkered Past. No official reason was given why Toonami Rewind was canceled. Alongside potential issues with Toonami bringing in additional programming for Rewind, it is likely that Adult Swim is seeing a change in strategy with the network inking a deal with Disney to bring Family Guy back to the late-night programming block for the first time since 2021. It’s not all lost, however, as the Rewind lineup would be “merged back” into the Saturday night Toonami lineup, with Naruto starting over from the beginning starting January 11th, while Sailor Moon will return on January 25th.
