The Canty-Faust Family Tree

Here we see the scope of Nacht and Josele's family tree.

Rather than just link to the posts I made about them, I briefly summarize the children here.

Sterling (not her birth name) is the eldest child. She was adopted some time after Nacht and Josele's wedding, during the 15 month time skip.

Sterling has two magic attributes thanks to a magical circlet implanted in her head (making her similar to Mars).

Dawn (middle name Aurelia) is the second oldest but firstborn child to Nacht and Josele. She's a spirited girl who never backs down from a challenge.

She has Light Magic (like her uncle) which manifests as silver light (which I also headcanon for Morgen's magic). She's got a lot of raw power but struggles with control.

Dusk (middle name Argentio) is the third oldest and Dawn's younger twin. He's far more reserved and does terribly in social situations.

He has Shadow Magic like Nacht. He's got talent for Creation Magic and works hard to hone that ability.

In Dusk's youth, he was very close to Nacht. However, around the time he was six, something happened and caused him to start avoiding his father.

Sirius is the fourth of the children. He's soft spoken and easy going most of the time but a force to be reckoned with if pushed.

Sirius has Dream Magic which greatly surprised his parents. He uses his attribute to gain a greater understanding of other people through their thoughts and dreams.

Merel is Josele and Nacht's fifth child and Sirius's younger twin. While afraid of a lot of things, she still finds the strength to be an optimist about everything.

(Fun fact, while Sirius was born on December 31st, Merel was born after midnight on January 1st.)

Her attribute is Nightmare, the dark counterpart to Dream Magic. She's afraid of her magic for a while but learns to come into it and use it to fight.

The youngest child is Vivian and the only child born to Nacht and Josele not as a twin. Quiet and robotic at first glance, she can get fired up in the right situation.

She inherits Emotion Magic from Josele. However, due to the nature of Emotion Magic, none of Vivian's emotion-to-element conversions match Josele's (example: Josele's magic turns the emotion of courage into Fire Magic while Vivian derives Fire Magic from feelings of embarrassment). The only exception is love turning into Healing Magic.

All the children call Nacht and Josele "Father" and "Mother." This is because Sterling was the first to call them that since she already had a "Daddy" and "Mommy." Though it sounds formal, "Mother" and "Father" are said with a great amount of affection for the parents.

Sterling: she’s the smart and responsible sibling. She’s eerily keen on how her siblings feel and behave (and that’s not even taking into account her Remnant and Divination Magic to get special kinds of insight). She’s not that much of a leader to be totally honest but she takes charge if it’s with her siblings.

Dawn: the “wildest” of the siblings, but it’s more that she’s a go-getter kind of girl. She’s more reckless than the rest of her siblings. Definitely the strongest fighter amongst the kids and the one to protect her siblings when things are tough.

Dusk: the quietest of the kids (which is saying a lot since most of the kids are like that). He often feels like he’s living in the shadows of all his siblings (sad young man that he is). He could never take the lead amongst his siblings because he’s so unsure of himself.

Sirius: the “sane” one of the kids. He’s the most reasonable of them, often taking lots of time to think things through. The best listener and advice giver too. Slight “forgotten middle sibling” syndrome but he manages.

Merel: the cheerleader of the siblings. None of her siblings can do wrong in her eyes and she loves seeing them try so hard for their dreams. A scaredy-cat and bubbly optimist at the same time, she comes off as a little unpredictable.

Vivian: the “baby.” She’s mature and wise despite her siblings being coddling and defensive over her. The smartest of the children behind Sterling. Her siblings would never bother her with their troubles but they also wouldn’t force her to accept their help if she was in trouble, that’s how much she’s trusted.

"We need to discuss something important" is a sentence that usually causes anxiety. For Regulus, however, it was only a confirmation. He had expected it to happen at any moment. He and James had fooled around for a few months, but the fun was about to end.

James and Regulus were destined to live their high school lives like a bad teen movie. James was on the clear path to the stereotype of the captain of the football team, with impeccable presence at every party, a girl on each arm. Regulus, on the other hand, was the top tier in academics, a withdrawn and silent boy who spent his free time in libraries or in some obscure place with his few friends. What had saved Regulus from the normal path of nerdiness had been both his gorgeous looks and his status as Sirius Black's younger brother.

Although he didn't like to believe in clichés, he knew that he and James were too different. What had attracted him in the first place was a frighteningly sincere smile. Then a twinkle of the eyes. Then a snap of the fingers. He started to follow his small gestures during the lunch break, when he pretended to read "War and Peace" or "Faust". Somehow, Regulus had gotten close enough to make James curious. A few months of hide-and-seek games followed, with fleeting kisses and slightly too bold touches.

Regulus knew, however, that it would not last. James was just curious, and Regulus was looking for some fun. When the moment would come, one of them would break it from the other. The younger boy was so convinced that their little adventure was already over, that he was paralyzed for a few minutes when James poured a "Will you be my boyfriend?" out of nowhere. They were at a cafe in the city, at a table in a secluded corner, each with a cup of green tea in front of them.

James was clearly nervous, and sweat was running down his back as if he had just returned from a walk in the desert. He waited for any kind of reaction from Regulus, who stood like a stone, rarely blinking. Neither of them moved a muscle. In the end, the silence was too much to endure for James and he cracked.

"I understand... Sorry if I caught you off guard" he began, gathering his things. "It's ok, I think I interpreted all of this wrong. I'm going to go now so I don't humiliate myself even more".

James threw his backpack on his arm, ready to run to the first gas station he could find, to lock himself in a toilet and hit his head against the walls. However, Regulus woke up from his trance and grabbed his shirt sleeve firmly before running away.

✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?

Sirius: One particularly bad memory of Sirius's is the day at school when his teacher noticed and called attention to the white hairs growing from Sirius's head despite his best efforts to hide it (he didn't have the courage to try sneakily dying his hair). The teacher literally yanked on his hair to bring him to the front of class and scold him for delinquency, even as he tried to explain the hair was natural. After that, his classmates never looked at him the same. They either called him an old man or a ruffian. It really shook him.

Josele: By far, Josele's worst memory is the day Morgen died. It started out as a very normal day. Then, while Josele was at the Grey Deer base, Nacht came running out of the shadows with Morgen limp in his arms. Josele literally used up all her magic trying to heal Morgen but it didn't work (Morgen was already dead by the time he was in her arms so nothing could've been done). As she cried and held Morgen's corpse, Nacht blamed Morgen's death on her. Saying she failed to heal/help him. Those two things happening in rapid succession was too much for Josele. She genuinely believed the accusation for years. There really is nothing else that can be Josele's worst memory.

Sterling: Losing her biological family. Sterling was wide awake when her family was attacked and she experienced them frantically getting her to safety before blacking out. There was fire and screaming and the look of demented hunger in the eyes of the killer. Sterling didn't see any deaths outright but she was there for the chaos that happened right before she saw her family for the last time.

"Happy birthday, cousin," Johan said as he passed a small box to Sterling.

"Thank you, Johan!" Sterling grinned at Johan before she plucked the lid off the gift. Set inside the box were bunched up ribbons. "Hm? I already have plenty of ribbons though?"

"Well that's because it's not really for you to wear," Johan answered while smiling awkwardly. "I'm supposed to wear them."

Around them, several of their family's heads - including Heinrich, Dawn, Dusk, and Merel - tilted to the side in confusion. Nacht raised his brow in skepticism. Sirius had a look of contemplation on his face. Only Vivian looked unchanged, but that was merely because of who she was. Josele and Discordia looked to each other and smiled in a knowing way.

Ida was the first to speak up, "That's some gift there, Johan. Giving your cous' something secondhand." She grinned in a way that indicated she was only teasing.

"Oh wait..." Sterling's confused expression brightened into a new smile. "Are you saying that I can finally decorate your horns and hair?"

Johan blushed a faint pink and nodded. "Yeah..."

Sterling let out a squeal as she threw her arms around Johan's shoulders, the box with the ribbons still in her hand. Quickly, she pulled away and grabbed Johan's hand. She pulled him up from the couch they'd been sitting on.

"C'mon, let's do it now!"

Sterling dragged Johan out of the living room, leaving their family behind.

"Oh my," Discordia said with a little hum. "She really is excited for that."

"She's been waiting ten years for this chance." Josele, holding Vivian in her arms, stood up. "How about we clean up the other opened presents here for when they come back, hm?"

"Yes, Mother!" the younger of Josele and Nacht's children said in unison.

"Ah, such responsible little ones," Heinrich mused as the children worked together to pick up torn wrapping paper and emptied boxes. He looked at Nacht. "You and Josele have raised them well. Sterling too."

"Ah, thank you, Heinrich," Nacht replied.

Sterling dragged Johan all the way to her bedroom and sat him down in front of her vanity mirror.

"Finally!" Sterling exclaimed while grabbing a brush and comb. "You're gonna look so good, Johan! I've been practicing, you know!"

"Of course I know," chuckled Johan. "Dawn, Merel, and Vivian look very cute when you style their hair. I trust you won't make me look unseemly."

Sterling dug through a small chest on the vanity and pulled out a hairband decorated with fake roses. Then, she began to brush Johan's hair. A hummed tune, one that sounded like a lullaby, resonated in the air as Sterling worked. She maneuvered Johan's hair around his horns so his locks were evenly divided. When she decided that Johan's hair was ready, she fitted the rose headband onto Johan.

"Lovely! Like a vision of spring!" Sterling commented as she picked up the first of the ribbons.

Johan watched Sterling's smile in the mirror.

Though they weren't related by blood - and even if they were, they generations between Heinrich and Nacht were so numerous that their "blood relation" would've been little more than a single drop in an ocean - Johan knew that Sterling belonged among the Fausts, as one of his precious cousins. The circlet embedded in her forehead was not the same as the horns which Heinrich and Johan bore or those which Nacht would don for the sake of fighting for his loved ones. But Sterling was still marked as different. She was unlike most humans and thus fit right in with those tied to the Faust name.

Being close in age meant they'd been close since they met. Johan would run off in search of something interesting to do or find. And Sterling would follow after him to make sure he'd come back safely. The fact that they both had two attribute brought them closer. There was a time when Johan envied Sterling, her pride of being an older sister. But then... he was allowed to visit his cousins - all of them from Nacht, Ida, and Discordia - often enough that the jealousy faded.

Sterling and all his relatives really were Johan's greatest blessings.

"There we go!" Sterling squealed while stepping back.

Johan looked at himself in the mirror. The deep red of the rose headband stood out against his blonde hair. The warm tones were contrasted by the cool, royal blue of the ribbons. They daintily wrapped around the base of his horns and dangled from there. Johan tilted his head to the side and admired how the ribbons followed his motion.

"Tee hee! I knew it would suit you, Johan!" Sterling said. She set aside and extra ribbon. "I'm happy you finally let me do this!"

"Of course, Sterling. It is your eighteenth birthday after all, so why not?" Johan replied. "How about we show-?"

He was cut off by Sterling throwing her arms around him and giving him a hug. Her embrace was rather tight. Johan even worried that his bones might crack with a little more pressure. But then Sterling let go and grinned at Johan.

"Yeah, let's go show the folks," she said.

Johan gave Sterling a pat on the head before they made their way back to the living room. As they walked, both thought to themself, "I'm lucky to have such a kind cousin."
