One thing that caught my attention in Piofiore is how the power dynamics play into the character choices, and how some characters are actually more privileged than the others yet due to how the political situation is set up, they don’t see that. And they perceive they have the right to do whatever they want because they see that they were wronged.

Like, Yang and Orlok, they are actually the most disadvantaged out of the lot, for different reasons. Yet they are the ones being framed as the ‘disrupters’ (also for different reasons XD). While Dante (and the Falzone) as well as Gilbert (the Visconti), they are morally ‘superior’ regardless of them actually being moral or not. This automatically gives Dante and Gilbert (and to a lesser extent Nicola) the ‘right’ to set the rules of who deserves to feel wronged and who deserves ‘rights’.

Yang is a horrible mafia boss but so are Dante and Gilbert, it is just that they are more organised and have a rules based system that makes them more ‘acceptable’ as they are natives to Burlone and have strong control over it. Yang and the Lao Shu were always at a disadvantage as they are the foreigners and to have some form of control in this new environment, their approach was more on the overt side. But at the end of the day, all families are criminals through and through.

Where Orlok comes in is the fact although he is part of the church which is politically the more superior out of them all, he was from the beginning groomed as a mere tool, so even in the church’s system, he is ‘inferior’. Then as he starts to break out of the systematic programming he underwent, and began to form his own goals and identity, this clashed with burlone’s mafia system. He became this ‘annoying’ outlier that has disrupted the order of things, and as such was targeted for just merely trying to go his own way. But how I see it is that Gilbert and Dante saw him as someone who does not have the right to actually go on his life even when they both knew very well that he is much less privileged than them and has been a victim of the church. Because with how the dynamics at place are set up, Gilbert and to a greater extent Dante, saw themselves as the ‘victims’ when they are far from being ones.

I feel Nicola understands this more than the other two as he is kind of also in a less privileged position, and he wanted to free Dante from this messed up system imo in part because he understands that this set up is toxic.

Things About Henri Lambert That Make Him So Sweet

He has had such a hard life and when he says he "needs" you then you can take that to the bank cause it means your the only thing keeping him from wanting to die

He may not be innocent, and yes he has killed. However this means he would do anything to protect you, even burn the world and everyone in it

He has been so touch starved most of his life you can guarantee now that he holds you, kisses you, makes love to you he will never want to stop...he might even run you crazy at how bad he wants you

He has this handsome but soft look about him and he can dress up in any suit and fill it out so nicely

He loves to snuggle his girl for long hours. So expect you crawl in to bed next to him he is gonna pull you into him and hold on to you for dear life cause if he could have it his way you two would never be apart

Your the only one that knows how to make this man truly smile. He puts on a visaed for most but you get to see when he is genuinely happy.

He loves to give forehead kisses cause you are his sweet girl and he wants you to feel safe with him

He would make a good father one day, you see this in how well he can run an orphanage full of kids

He is the guy that you get something in your hair, he will stop to pull it out but it will give him a reason to lean into you and kiss your lips again for no reason at all

He has done so much in his life that given the choice he would rather sit at home with you snuggled in his lap than go out anywhere

He really is a gentleman, he would open the door for you, and goes out of his way to be the one to buy you flowers just to take you on a small outing at the beach even

He will take care of you when your sick, properly cause he doesn't want to lose you. He will even hand feed you soups and broths if your too week

He will tell you how beautiful you are every day and show you he cherishes you in his life, cause before you he had nothing to live for you are his everything

He is older yes, however he can be quiet vulnerable once he let you in, he needs alot of attention and love but in return he will shower you with anything

He can't fight with you, every time he wants to put his foot down you find away to convince him every time that you are right or that he needs to just let you have your way

He likes to hold your hand even in the simplest moments, whether be just sitting around the house caressing your fingers or when you go out, fully intertwined with your fingers hand in hand as you walk the streets.

He is needy, loving, but also clingy so expect he wants to be where ever you are and as close to you as you let him. He is a wounded puppy and for that he needs to be treated with care and attention

He loves to tell you sweet words in french to make you melt

He isn't perfect, but he never tries to be. He just wants to be what you want and need

He has no problem helping you around the house cleaning up messes and washing clothes

He loves to cook with you or for that matter anything he can do with you makes him happy

About the concept of religious guilt and faith

One of the things that made the bond Lili and Orlok had unique is how they went about their religious beliefs, and how this played into their choices afterwards. They both were brought up into religious environments, and while drastically different in intensity, they both have the same basic foundation, and initially, both believed in these concepts without much questioning if any at all.

For Lili, she lived a sheltered life away from any kind of serious issues, and while she is an orphan, she was taken care of and was loved. Her concept of faith while taught, can also be said is a result of her not being faced with hardships. It is conceptual more than grounded in reality because while she is aware of how the world can be cruel and is in fact messed up in the very town she is living, her idealistic religious upbringing made her have a naive outlook.

Orlok on the other hand was practically groomed into complete obedience and submission to faith since he was very young. And was surely subjected to severe measures in order to become a disciple. This created a situation where he would never question the religious heads controlling him, and won’t ever question his beliefs. That ultimately made him idealistic similar to Lili, but that idealism was born from severe indoctrination, and a harsh life that was deliberately set for him in the context of serving religion. It is basically very deep religious abuse, where the victim ultimately does not see anything wrong happening to them.

So when these two got thrusted together into the political conflict happening in Burlone, they both started to experience different yet a connected awakening from what they have believed all their lives.

For Orlok it was the gradual realization of the flaws and sins of Rosberg who was the foundation of his religious brainwashing as well as the fact the more he cared for Lili, the more this conflicted with his beliefs. For Lili, it is seeing that the church she believed in can be used to manipulate the masses and as she especially got attached to Orlok she saw how this unfairly affected him.

So, they were like two birds who put all their strength together to break free, but because of how they both were tied to the very foundation of Burlone’s political system (Lili the key maiden, and Orlok the disciple), them trying to break free will turn into a form of religious guilt. They feel bad because they want to choose what is best for them. They feel bad because they need to harm others who are actively trying to hunt them down. And especially Orlok, this weighed so heavily on him. The scene after Luca’s death and after he killed Yang showed this perfectly.

It does not help that the players involved in deeming them as the cause of strife (even if both are victims through and through) remind them that they are guilty and should not seek salvation.

And someone as pure and honest as Orlok genuinely believes though that he does not deserve happiness and that he is a horrible person.

It is only through supporting each other and their faith in each other is how Lili and Orlok were able to survive this guilt.

Their realisation at the end that they still believed in God and did not lose faith, but at the same time they would not be blind followers felt like a reasonable and relatable thing to happen. They accepted their sins and believed they are part of what makes them human. So in a way they made peace with the guilt that ate at them.

For them to full on lose faith in God would not make sense with how devoted they both were. But finding a new meaning in religion and faith based on what they experienced felt powerful and hit close home..
