One thing that caught my attention in Piofiore is how the power dynamics play into the character choices, and how some characters are actually more privileged than the others yet due to how the political situation is set up, they don’t see that. And they perceive they have the right to do whatever they want because they see that they were wronged.

Like, Yang and Orlok, they are actually the most disadvantaged out of the lot, for different reasons. Yet they are the ones being framed as the ‘disrupters’ (also for different reasons XD). While Dante (and the Falzone) as well as Gilbert (the Visconti), they are morally ‘superior’ regardless of them actually being moral or not. This automatically gives Dante and Gilbert (and to a lesser extent Nicola) the ‘right’ to set the rules of who deserves to feel wronged and who deserves ‘rights’.

Yang is a horrible mafia boss but so are Dante and Gilbert, it is just that they are more organised and have a rules based system that makes them more ‘acceptable’ as they are natives to Burlone and have strong control over it. Yang and the Lao Shu were always at a disadvantage as they are the foreigners and to have some form of control in this new environment, their approach was more on the overt side. But at the end of the day, all families are criminals through and through.

Where Orlok comes in is the fact although he is part of the church which is politically the more superior out of them all, he was from the beginning groomed as a mere tool, so even in the church’s system, he is ‘inferior’. Then as he starts to break out of the systematic programming he underwent, and began to form his own goals and identity, this clashed with burlone’s mafia system. He became this ‘annoying’ outlier that has disrupted the order of things, and as such was targeted for just merely trying to go his own way. But how I see it is that Gilbert and Dante saw him as someone who does not have the right to actually go on his life even when they both knew very well that he is much less privileged than them and has been a victim of the church. Because with how the dynamics at place are set up, Gilbert and to a greater extent Dante, saw themselves as the ‘victims’ when they are far from being ones.

I feel Nicola understands this more than the other two as he is kind of also in a less privileged position, and he wanted to free Dante from this messed up system imo in part because he understands that this set up is toxic.

It's a reasonable question. There used to be a time when you'd picture your head rolling off on the carpet at the brief thought of disrupting Yang while he's working on his desk.

But as your relationship progresses, Yang shows you nothing but interest every time you try to break the shackles of your circumspection, when you're bold and daring, knowing what you want and ready to take it.

He'd sometimes test you with that dangerous glare of his. If there's something more blood-freezing than his wicked grin it has to be this, when he's nothing but cold and calculating like that. But what if it's not just to mess with your head this time? What if he genuinely hates the idea of being distracted now, if he's serious when he-

You catch a glimpse of his upper lip curling before your senses are overtaken by him; your nose filling with his aroma, your sight blocked by his looming over figure and your lips - stolen in an almost rough kiss. You feel the way his tongue plays with you all the way to your toes. Did you sit in your lap in a further show of confidence or did he make you sit down? The details blur away as Yang gives you the kiss you demanded for. He is a genius, of course he has a solution for everything. Right now, he'll kiss you so thoroughly that by the end of it, you just won't have the energy to disrupt him again until he's done with his work.

Orlok route spoilers because, more thoughts 😂😭

About Yang and Orlok

I also just loved how Yang’s role in Orlok’s route was actually vital in helping Orlok break out of his indoctrination. I know Yang did this because he was obsessed with the idea of fighting Orlok and wanted to rile him up one way or another, but the ultimate result ended up benefitting Orlok than harming him.

That whole convo before Lili and Orlok escaped from the Lao Shu was priceless, here are parts of it that were on the mark:

And how after they left Yang, Orlok was in a state of complete shock. He was processing the fact that Rosberg would even attempt such a thing. And at that point he also was obviously in love with Lili but did not realize it yet and what Yang is saying is making his emotions aggressively clash with each other. His blind faith in Rosberg’s version of religion and his new found love for Lili and his intense desire to protect her were in direct opposition.

Yang knew what he was doing.

A side note but Orlok’s seiyuu was just so good delivering these lines. I can feel the doubt and the confusion through the screen.
