Thank you for posting this because the idea that Kakashi is “forced” into this rivalry is wrong. If Kakashi doesn’t wanna do something, he doesn’t! He loves Gai and his friendship with him. He cherishes and respects him as a person, a friend and a rival!

Friendly reminder that when Gai dances, Kakashi dances.

This friendship/rivalry is 100% equal and while Kakashi isn’t as openly enthusiastic as Gai he is still 100% participating enthusiastically in the way that he shows enthusiasm.

Gai was his most consistent support. His presence never faltered in Kakashi’s life even when he was in the trenches of hell and experiencing the atrocities that he subjected himself to because his guilt was so heavy he didn’t believe he deserved to live.

Gai loved him before that, Gai loved him during it and Gai loves him after. I believe with my heart and soul that if Gai died Kakashi would shatter in a way he never could come back from.

Love Gai and Kakashi's friendship in canon with all my heart and soul. Yes, they are soulmates in every sense. Best friends. Rivals. In many ways, Gai was closer to Kakashi as a person than the entire Minato team. I think Gai would have been the final straw that would have broken the camel's back. If Kakashi lost Gai too, Kakashi would 100% commit suicide. There's no way around it. And that's the reason Obito didn't kill Gai. Obito was determined to make Kakashi suffer and all, but he also wanted Kakashi to live in that hell with him. Yes, Gai's death would make Kakashi suffer, but it would also drop Kakashi into the abyss of death.

Headcanon that Gai needs a certain number of hours to be as cheerful in the day as he is and if he’s woken up before he reaches that time he’s gonna be the biggest asshole to you about it in the most passive aggressive way

Kakashi has gotten the worst of it because 1. He didn’t know the first time and 2. He thinks Gai’s rude and brash attitude is so funny

[in kakashi gaiden] when obito is trying to convince kakashi to rescue rin, he's all like "remember all those times she healed us"

not "she is our friend" or "she was in your care, leader" or any other argument

is obito appealing to kakashi's "rational" side by pointing out rin's "usefulness", or is rin's healing genuinely the first thing that comes to mind when he's looking for reasons?

i think when it comes to looking for reasons, yeah, it's the first thing to come to mind- but it's not why he want to save her, if that makes sense?

like, to me, this moment happens because obito tends to use masks a lot too (everyone in team minato is trading personalities around like trading cards). and he's appealing specifically to the kind of shinobi that kakashi is- so he needs an argument that kakashi would cave to. but also- crucially- obito style masks means that he kind of believes it too. it's not the root (haha) of his desire to save rin; it the justification he's slapping on top of it for kakashi and himself, to a lesser extent.

it's also really interesting that obito taking *off* all masks is what convinces kakashi to take off his OWN mask, and all of that of course has fascinating implications towards how a theoretical "rin unboxing" situation would go... but i digress.

i think that as much as rin dislikes the identifier of mednin, no one really defines her by it- if anything, it's usually just another reason that they see her as a kind girl. rather than a moniker in and of itself, it's a contribution to the Greater Mask. it's also interesting, because if someone genuinely only came to save her because of a pragmatic reason like that, i think she'd be more comfortable with it than kakashi and obito coming for her for what she views to be the wrong reasons- they don't know who she really is, so they can't love her, so they don't want to save her, ect. very interesting to me.

You could blame both Kakashi and Tsunade’s shortcomings with training Sakura on Kishimoto. This is an issue that exceeds the characters in the story and is much more in line with the author’s failings.

I don’t know which Kakashi fans you’re interacting with but I haven’t seen much credit taken from the other sensei’s and given to Kakashi. Kakashi was a pretty decent teacher, maybe not the best but he did teach them skills.

Sakura’s training failure with Kakashi stems from the lack of care Kishimoto had for her, that’s why even when she trained under Tsunade she didn’t learn to create her own skill set / techniques compared to her teammates. Sometimes she didn’t even listen to the very things she was taught - staying off the front line as a medic nin until she manifested the byakugou.
