(also on Ao3)
"Morning, Bruce."
The way Stephanie says that instantly makes him look up. She traces her socked toe on the right angles of the tile, looking down.
"Morning, Steph." Bruce puts his coffee down. "Something wrong?"
"Huh?" She perks up in realization. "No, not at all. I actually just have something for you. I stopped by Walgreens on patrol last night 'cause I ran out of antiseptic, and I saw something that reminded me of you."
She hands him a dark blue greeting card with a cartoon fruit bat and Comic Sans text reading: You drive me batty, but I love you.
"Get it? 'Cause it's a bat, and you're the Batman." She scratches the back of her neck. "Not trying to make it weird or anything, you're just a cool mentor and whatnot. But also, it's nice to have someone who you can mess around with. My old man was always talking business even when he was at home—you kinda do that too, but in a good way 'cause anything's better than being a D-list villain, y'know. Plus, unlike him, you're working on striking a balance. Sometimes you even have a sense of humor." She chuckles awkwardly. "Anyway, I'm going on a jog. Text me if you need anything."
Before he processes her rambling, she grabs a granola bar and races out the door. He opens the card and out falls out a handful of purple confetti plus an ever-rare two-dollar bill. Smiling, he brushes the confetti up and puts it in his shirt pocket.
Bruce checks his watch. Everyone else is already out, except for Cass. She was out late last night on that Clayface mission, but even she should be up by this time. He fixes her a bowl of cereal with the package instructions and brings it upstairs.
"Cass?" He knocks. "Are you up yet? It's past 9:30."
He hears the duvet crunch like a candy wrapper as she shuffles around. A moment later, the door swings open as a messy-haired Cass yawns.
"I'll leave this up here for you," he says, putting the bowl on the dresser. "Any big plans today?"
She shakes her head. "Write reports. And relax."
"Well, you deserve a break. Great job on the stakeout, Princess." He plants a quick kiss on her forehead.
"Love," she says.
"Huh?"
"Favorite thing you do. Love."
He laughs softly. "I try. Now go get dressed."
The rest of the day goes by like any other. Despite it being Sunday, he still has a meeting scheduled with some Singaporean investors on their timezone. By eleven, he and some other executives are gathered around the long conference table as the video call drones on, and it's not until over an hour later that they're finally let out. Bruce loosens his tie and Tim does the same, sighing in relief and exhaustion.
Bruce asks, "Did you have lunch yet?"
"Oh, I forgot that's a thing," Tim says, stretching. "Hey, remember that ice cream place on 32nd?"
"You want ice cream for lunch?"
"I'd break your no killing rule for their M&M cookie sundae, okay?" he says. "Besides, remember when you took my friends and I there even though we massively bombed our first off-world fight? I might still be a massive perfectionist but that made me get a little more comfortable with failing. Anyway, I thought it'd be cool to stroll down memory lane—and have junk food as a meal without Alfred knowing. Unless you're busy, which I totally get."
"Not at all," Bruce replies, putting an arm around Tim's shoulders. "Duke and Damian will be at the arcade all day and I don't have any urgent side business."
And so, instead of calling Alfred for a ride, they journey through the Gotham subways with Tim's camera capturing the Grammy-worthy saga of a billionaire CEO battling a common turnstyle. They get a few side-glances in the sparse train car, but besides a teenager asking for Tim's autograph, the civilians leave them alone. Pretty soon, they're at a 1950s-themed ice cream parlor, where the waitress slides their orders down the long chromium bar.
"Why do they call it a banana split?" Bruce asks, grabbing the cocoa powder shaker.
Tim pauses mid-bite of his cookie. "...Because they split the banana in half?"
"Really?"
He moves the whipped cream aside to reveal the cut banana in Bruce's dish.
"How would it sound if I said I never noticed that?"
He smirks. "That's why I'm the brains of this operation."
"Indeed you are." Bruce ruffles his hair. "Though this head of yours could use some shampoo."
"Will saying I love you get me a free pass out of it?"
"No." He laughs. "But I love you too, son."
Alfred catches on to their little dessert escapade and picks them up from the parlor, though not without commenting on the strawberry stain on Bruce's jacket. As Tim plugs his music into the car, Bruce takes the time to listen to the voicemails he got during their lunch break.
"Hiya Bruce," Clark's voice plays. "I hope today's going swell for you. I just want you to know that I'm glad I can call you my pard'ner." Bruce snickers at the country twang.
Next is Diana. "Bruce, I apologize if I must keep this brief since I have a curator's convention today. However, I wish to tell you that you are an invaluable teammate and even more remarkable friend."
"Hey Batman, I gave you a shoutout to the Central City press for your help taking down Weather Wizard," Barry says. "Also, thanks for letting me borrow your communicator. I can always count on you to be overprepared. Have a good one!"
"Bats, tell your kid to quit taking my yogurt from the fridge." Ah, good old Hal. "Also, today's all about guys like you, so... yeah. I admit, you could be worse."
Finally, there's one from Zatanna. "Afternoon, Bruce! I'd tell you in person if I wasn't caught up in Kahndaq, but I hope today is extra special for you. I know how much the birds mean to you, and I know they're gonna treat you well."
(There's also one from Ollie, but he's just asking if he can use the communicator after Barry. In the background, Dinah is is clearly ordering food.)
After dropping Tim and Alfred home and switching to a more discreet vehicle, Bruce makes his way to pick two of his other kids up from the arcade.
"Did you guys have fun?" Bruce asks as they climb in.
"We decimated every game," Damian says, "and won you the finest specimen as a trophy."
He plops a five-foot Snorlax into the front seat and buckles the seatbelt.
"This is for me?" Bruce asks.
"Tt, who else would it be for?"
"I didn't win as many tickets," Duke says, "but I also got you a spider ring and a Chinese finger trap." He puts them in the cupholder.
"Why are you giving me all your prizes?"
"Again, who else would we give them to?" Damian asks.
Duke says, "I think what he means is that you do a lot for us, so this is a thanks from us."
As silly as it might seem, Bruce is genuinely touched.
Pre-patrol dinner is a quiet affair, with Kate stopping by because she apparently forgot to go grocery shopping. She takes a fingerling potato off his plate.
"Um, you're welcome?" he says.
"Bruce, we're family. It's what we do." She takes a bite.
He takes a piece of asparagus from her. "I wish all of us were here, though. Too bad Dick and Jason have that Penguin stakeout. Hopefully they're being safe."
"Even if things go wrong, they were taught by the best. You should trust them more." Selina gets up and places a peck on his cheek before going to get a drink.
"I do," he mumbles into his meal. "It's the world I don't trust."
As he puts on his cowl, he asks Barbara for an update on the evening. So far, Duke is handling a carjacking, the girls are preoccupied with a strip mall hostage situation, Damian is patrolling Metropolis with Jon, and Kate is kicking off her shift with a car chase against Two-Face. Tim and Selina are staying back to catch up on some overdue reports, but other than that, the cave is quiet.
"Before you go," Barbara says, "my dad was cleaning out the attic and found something you might like."
From her bag, she pulls out a blue mug that says: World's Okayest Dad.
"My brother got it for him a long time ago, but... you know. It's all yours now, if you want it."
He takes it, running his thumb along the words.
"It suits you," she says before turning back to relay something to Stephanie.
The route laid out for him tonight gives him the perfect opportunity to swing by and check on two of his boys. He lands on the rooftop silently, where Nightwing and Red Hood have already set up camp. Evidently, they don't notice him as they keep going with their conversation.
"Did you get dropped on your head as a baby?" Jason asks. "Sour cream and Greek yogurt are not the same thing."
"They totally are, change my mind." Dick glances through his binoculars. "No sign of Cobblepot yet."
A moment goes by as Jason not-so-covertly steals some of his brother's patrol snacks.
"So how'd family therapy go yesterday?" Jason asks. "Did the old bat finally show an emotion?"
"It was pretty insightful, at least on my part." Dick lowers his binoculars. "I think I realized where Bruce's persistence comes from. It's annoying as hell, but I think that's how he maintains hope. And who knows, maybe it's his love language."
Jason scoffs.
"I'm serious," he says. "I know none of us are stellar at this family thing, but we care about each other. You can't deny that. We just gotta... refine how we express it."
"Count me out."
"Jaybird."
"Codenames, Dickhead."
Dick snickers. "You love us, admit it. All of us."
Jason mutters a string of curses under his breath before saying, "If you tell him, I'm filling your mattress with sour cream."
Bruce smiles and leaps to the next building.
At the end of the night, Bruce finds Alfred brewing tea in the kitchen and takes the kettle from him.
"I got this," he says. "Why don't you go relax in the living room? I think they added your favorite detective movie to Netflix."
"This is a pleasant surprise." Alfred raises an eyebrow. "What brought it on?"
"It's Father's Day, of course," he replies, pouring the cups of tea. "You know you've always been a second dad to me."
"You made that clear with last year's breakfast surprise," Alfred says. "Care to join me?"
"Always," Bruce says. "By the way, do the kids seem different to you today?"

Singapore, known for its political stability, has been rocked by a string of rare political scandals.Last week, a senior minister was arrested in a corruption probe, the first in four decades to be implicated in such an investigation. And on Monday, two lawmakers - one of them once tipped as a potential prime minister - resigned after it was revealed they were in an extramarital affair. It has shocked residents of the city-state, which prides itself on its reputation for clean governance and has the highest paid leaders in the world.Analysts say the unfolding scandals could dent support for the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which has been in power since 1959 and holds a large majority in parliament. They also say it casts doubt over when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong can hand over the reins of leadership.
On Monday, Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-jin, 54, and fellow lawmaker Cheng Li Hui, 47, resigned from the party and the legislature over their "inappropriate relationship". Mr Tan is married, while Ms Cheng is single.
More questions on transparency arose last week, when Singapore's anti-corruption watchdog arrested Transport Minister S Iswaran and billionaire hotelier Ong Beng Seng. The two men played key roles in bringing the Grand Prix to Singapore in 2008.
Singaporeans were told last Wednesday that Mr Iswaran had been asked to take leave from his ministerial duties amid a probe.
Deputy prime minister Lawrence Wong has told local media the corruption probe would be "full, thorough and independent", and that nothing will be swept under the carpet.
But authorities only announced the arrests three days after they actually took place. Both men have not been charged and are currently out on bail.
The arrests came on the heels of allegations that two other senior ministers had rented colonial-era bungalows in a high-end neighbourhood at below-market rates.
While an anti-graft review cleared the two men, K Shanmugam and Vivian Balakrishnan, of wrongdoing, the matter sparked a heated debate on inequality in Singapore and political optics.
The unusual series of events has bought out the inevitable memes. "The writers of this season of Singapore have really outdone themselves," wrote the creators behind Instagram page yeolo.sg on Monday.
A separate post, featuring actresses on the set of the Barbie movie crowding around a laptop, read: "When me and the girlies are suddenly interested in sg politics."
Another Instagram user wryly compared the current political situation to spilling tea, or sharing gossip.
But beyond the jokes lie serious questions about the future of the PAP and how long it can hold on to Singaporeans' trust.
It has weathered similar scandals in the recent past - in the last decade a previous parliamentary Speaker and a backbencher stepped down because of extramarital affairs. But the close timing of the scandals and corruption probe has heightened voters' scrutiny.
The PAP has long prided itself on demanding high moral standards of its lawmakers, and its ability to keep its house in order. One of its founding members once compared joining the PAP to joining the priesthood.
Mr Lee this week defended his party's handling of the recent scandals, saying it demonstrated "how the system has to function".
"Sometimes things cluster up, but we make sure we put them right," he said, adding that "high standards of propriety and personal conduct… are the fundamental reasons Singaporeans trust and respect the PAP".
But other observers contend these controversies call into question Singapore's - and in particular, the PAP's - claims to exceptional governance.
"I think the biggest questions surround restraints on authority, oversight, transparency, the impartiality of parliamentary process as well as the PAP's claim that it is a sufficient check on itself," said Singapore-based political scientist Ian Chong.
He noted that the PAP has rejected political practices common in other developed jurisdictions, such as public disclosure of income and assets by political office holders, senior civil servants and their immediate family members.
There are no robust mechanisms for holding powerful people to account, added Michael Barr, an Australia-based international relations professor who has written several books on Singapore politics.
"You just have to trust them. That is why this is such a dangerous and novel set of developments for the government. They are trashing their repositories of public trust," he said.
Singapore is ranked the fifth-least corrupt country in Transparency International's latest Corruption Perceptions Index. Over the years, the government has justified seven-figure ministerial pay checks as a way to repress corrupt activity.
But Dr Barr pointed out: "Without extraordinary levels of public trust, the government must rely on one of two things to win elections: either repression and other measures that subvert democracy, or a high level of performance-based legitimacy. Their record in recent years is such that we can forget about performance legitimacy."
The recent events also cast doubt on when Mr Lee would step down.
The 71-year old, who has been prime minister since 2004, has often spoken of his wish to retire. A successor has already been designated: Lawrence Wong, who is also finance minister.
But on Monday, Mr Lee said he has no plans to call for an immediate general election. The next polls are due by November 2025.
The fact that Mr Wong has not been more active and visible in addressing the recent scandals also raises questions about him and his peers' readiness to take over as the city-state's leaders, noted Dr Chong.

The Past, Present, Future of Shenzhen Huang Qiang Bei (Volume 2)
——Slkor, Song Shiqiang
The Past, Present, Future of Shenzhen Huang Qiang Bei (Volume 2)
——Slkor, Song Shiqiang
In 1992, Deng Xiaoping visited Shenzhen, which supported and affirmed the Shenzhen economic model and inspired the people of Shenzhen. With the opening up of China to the outside world, the economic consumption center of Shenzhen gradually moved westward beyond Luohu District, and the focus was in the Futian District in the 1990s. Over the years, a middle class with consumption power emerged, and with the accumulation and development of the industrial base, a market of division of labor and spontaneity was formed. Hua Qiang Bei, located in Futian District, developed into the Hua Qiang Bei Business Circle with the electronics street as the industry leader, creating an economic miracle.
Mr. Song Shiqiang, General Manager of Slkor and Kinghelm
In 1994, Vanguard Super Department moved to Hua Qiang Bei and introduced the Singaporean "warehouse mall" model, which was a key factor in activating the whole Hua Qiang Bei Business Circle. The department store's success led to the transformation of more than 40 buildings in the Shangbu Industrial Zone into commercial areas, and the rise of various other businesses such as the "International Electrical Appliance City" and the "Manha Clothing Mall." The author, Song Shiqiang, also mentions his earliest connection with Hua Qiang Bei and his efforts to work for its prosperity.
Second direct-sale store of SlkorMicro Semicon Co., Ltd. (Slkor) in Hua Qiang Bei, Shenzhen
The market, Hua Qiang Bei, an electronics market in Shenzhen, China has been a hub for small and medium-sized enterprises, and many successful companies have emerged from it.
The author, Song Shiqiang, is the general manager of Kinghelm and Slkor, two companies that started in Hua Qiang Bei. The author discusses the success of the Chinese economy, which he attributes to the complementation of the state-owned enterprises and small private businesses. The author also discusses the growth of Hua Qiang Bei and how it has been nurtured by the government and supported by state-owned enterprises. The passage also contains personal anecdotes about the author's experiences in Hua Qiang Bei and the people he has met there. Finally, the author mentions that Kinghelm and Slkor have moved their headquarters to Shenzhou Computer Building in Bantian, Longgang, and that Slkor's IC design and research team is now located in Korea and Suzhou, while Kinghelm's processing plants are located in Tangxia, Dongguan, and Li.
Hua Qiang Bei is an electronic market located in Shenzhen, China. It is famous for being the world's largest electronics market and a hub for electronic components, including emulational mobile phones, Bluetooth headsets, and other electronic products. The market is known for its fierce competition, creativity, and the ability to produce billionaires. The influx of migrants from Pearl River Delta Region and Shenzhen brings fierce competition and creativity. Hua Qiang Bei Chaoshan bosses are famous for daring to fight, which combines the bloodiness of Hunan people, Society of Brothers tradition of Sichuan and Chongqing people without procrastination. The market's products are mostly electronic components, characterized by storage capacity and convenience of transportation, which can earn money decades later and thousands of kilometers away. Additionally, the market has electronic components with high unit price and high standardization, and the customers are basically 2B manufacturers, making the transaction mostly wholesale, where many people can make money easily. The active electronic components have the characteristics of unique model correspondence; they can't be used universally with a single difference. Therefore, if the products of downstream customers just lack this material, scarce material number can earn a lot of money, which belongs to commercial compensation value. Like Kinghelm and Slkor, Hua Qiang Bei's companies all belong to the electronic and information industries, which is in line with this great era.

Tumblr media
The building has had many identities over the years. Since September 2019, 20 Cecil Street has been owned by a private fund managed by CapitaLand. It had paid over $500 million ($2,320 psf) for Plaza Ventures, the holding company that owns the commercial tower located at 20 Cecil Street. Name changes over the years The previous owner, Hong Kong-listed Fullshare Holdings, a real estate developer based in Nanjing, China — chaired by Chinese billionaire Ji Changqun — in turn paid $725.2 million ($2,900 psf) for Plaza Ventures back in February 2017. It was Fullshare that had renamed the building PLUS. Prior to that, the tower was called GSH Plaza. It bore that name following the purchase by a consortium led by Singapore-listed GSH Corp, controlled by Singaporean businessman Sam Goi, for $550 million in 2014. The consortium was made up of GSH Corp (51% stake), together with Vibrant DB2 (35%) and Goi’s private investment vehicle, TYJ Group (14%). The consortium was called Plaza Ventures. The $550 million price tag in 2014 translated to $2,181 psf, based on the net lettable area of 252,000 sq ft then. In its earlier incarnation, the building was known as Equity Plaza from 2003 to 2014. For much of the 1990s, it was the headquarters of the Stock Exchange of Singapore: first, it was named the Stock Exchange of Singapore from January 1994 to November 1999, and then Singapore Exchange from December 1999 to November 2001. When the Stock Exchange moved to its new headquarters at SGX Centre on Shenton Way, the building at 20 Cecil Street was renamed Equity Plaza. The 99-year, leasehold building has a lease from 1989, hence there are 77 years left on the lease. The building was developed by Keppel Land and completed in 1992. It was jointly owned by Keppel Land and its fund management arm, Alpha Investment Partners (AIP), before it was sold in 2014. $100 million makeover For much of the 22 years, when it was under the ownership of Keppel Land and AIP, the building bore a reddish brown façade. Following its acquisition by Plaza Ventures, the building underwent a $100 million refurbishment, which included retrofitting the interiors to be in line with contemporary Grade-A office towers. After the makeover, the building now has a new curved, blue glass cladding; a new lobby; and a driveway. It was Plaza Ventures that sub-divided the offices on the third to 28th floors into 259 strata-titled units. The first two floors were carved up into 21 strata shops. GSH Corp sold some of the strata office units, and purchased the penthouse floors for its own use. DB2 purchased the entire portfolio of retail units on the first two levels of the building prior to the sale to Fullshare. The 27 office units that were released for sale recently are located on the fourth, fifth, ninth and 17th floors. According to Savills’ Yap, there are only 56 strata office units for sale within the building. CapitaLand’s private fund intends to hold the other whole floor units for lease.  For other levels/ bulk purchases, please talk to us  ✅ Rare Prime Grade A Strata Office Units available for sale (as there is a very limited supply of Grade A Office Spaces in CBD) ✅ Premium Location in Downtown Singapore ✅ Only 56 office units released for sale (some are tenanted, some are vacant) ✅ Different layout configurations (with the option to amalgamate) to meet every need ✅ An Independent air-conditioning system facilitates flexible operating hours ✅ The only strata office unit on sale within steps from Raffles Place MRT Station ✅ Highly desirable location for MNCs, Financial Institutions, and Regional Offices ✅ Easy access to major transport networks and expressways ✅ Few minutes drive to Orchard Shopping Belt, Beach Road and ✅ Marina Bay Financial Area is within walking distance ✅ Lofty open space lobby with security access ✅ Advanced security systems ✅ A 24-hour CCTV surveillance system Much Savings On one side of the coin, you are saving on Energy costs with individual air-conditioning units.  These are high in demand for those who operate internationally and outside office hours. If anyone is looking for a fun romcom I highly recommend Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. The series takes place throughout various locations in Asian, but centers mainly around China and Singapore cause the MCs are Singaporean billionaires. All of the characters are fictional, but the books have taught me some really interesting things about modern day Asia/China.
The book in the above photo is China Rich Girlfriend which is the second book in the trilogy. Heads up, this is not a series you'll enjoy if you can't manage to suspend belief a bit. It also helps if you have an interest in fashion, food, art, and decor. If not you might find some things about the books annoying cause the author does go into detail about those things.

大家好! Wanton and shui jiao are 2 dumplings popular here, the main difference being what is used as fillings. Shui jiao is larger, with shrimp, pork and sometimes water chestnuts, whereas wantons mostly contain pork. JL and I craved dumpling noodle soup, so she ordered wanton, I had shui jiao and we shared oyster sauce kailan as well as hae cho (prawn and pork wrapped in beancurd skin). The deceivingly clear soup was flavourful and delicious!

With the warmer weather upon us, Grace and Douglas are boiling soups again. They served up a bowl of old cucumber broth with apricot kernels as my snack. We try to eat qing (less oil) on hot days unless we're socialising, as the heat can feel as though we're frying from the inside if our meals are overly greasy. Doing this minimises skin inflammation such as pimples, redness and rashes. Soup and zhou are tasty ways to stay hydrated, although we also drink water and fresh juices to cool off.

JL tagged along last week when I took a stroll around the office after lunch. We circled twice, then went for coffee and after that she said she felt good. This week, we did it again before our coffee and WH gamely joined us although at first she made a face at the suggestion. JL is keen to up the frequency whenever she's able to do so. As for me, it's good to get some cardio on top of my daily calisthenics routine.

After supporting local cuisine during the covid pandemic and moving onto Asian food, I don't miss 'healthy oils'. When I make avocado toast occasionally for a weekend breakfast, it tastes like a mouthful of oil with each bite and I always feel lethargic after that. To a certain extent, I'm able to understand why Mummy and friends like JT dislike creamy and cheesy dishes. Their bodies feel the adverse effects from too rich a meal and now that mine has had the chance to recalibrate, I feel the same. It just feels better to eat qing whenever possible.

Finally, some people ought to keep their beaks out of other countries' internal affairs. Why are they barking at our nation's regulations when they don't live here and don't have any right to speak FOR our citizens? It's racist to think we want - let alone value - their opinions when we didn't ask for them in the first place. Maybe they ought to take some tranq dope and calm down. 下次见!

Neal Stephenson’s ‘Termination Shock’
Tumblr media
“Termination Shock” is Neal Stephenson’s ambitious, sprawling, engrossing latest novel — the tale of an eccentric Texas truck-stop magnate who unilaterally begins a program of geoengineering in a bid to cool the Earth by doping the stratosphere with sulfur.
https://nealstephenson.com/termination-shock.html
As you’d expect from a Neal Stephenson novel, Termination Shock bristles with delightful ornaments and esoteric adventure scenes. For example, Stephenson uses a border skirmish between China and India to illustrate the geopolitical consequences of retreating glaciers — but not just any skirmish. This border war is governed by a treaty that prohibits the use of any weapons save sticks and rocks, and is fought by livestreaming teams of martial artists using Sikh gatka combat techniques against kung fu staff-fighting, all at altitudes so high that it’s easy to pass out from moving too fast.
But the main events of Termination Shock revolve around TR Schmidt, the Texas truck-stop billionaire, and a giant gun he’s built to fire giant sulfur capsules into the stratosphere every eight minutes, 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
Schmidt’s geoengineering experiment doesn’t have the approval of the world’s governments, but it’s not an entirely unilateral affair. The story opens with Schmidt recruiting a very Stephensonian group of co-conspirators from low-lying places: the former Lord Mayor of the City of London; Singaporean technocrats; reps from ancient aristocratic Venetian families and the Queen of the Netherlands. These leaders come from lands threatened by rising seas, but not just any low-lying places: these are rich places.
Each of these co-conspirators becomes a lens to view different power blocs and their relationships to the climate emergency, but the main action is centered in the Netherlands. The queen — a delightful Stephenson character to rank with the best of them — is a vehicle to think about the role of colonialism (as she finds herself in former Dutch territories) and fossil fuels (she’s the major shareholder of Royal Dutch Shell, after all) in the climate emergency. She has no official political power, but she is a powerful influencer, and her conflicts make her the perfect fulcrum for the story to turn on.
Because this is a Stephenson novel, there’s a lot of delightful tech in it. A lot of the action revolves around the Maeslantkering (“the largest robot in the world”) a massive pair of flood-gates that defend the port of Rotterdam and the lands beyond it. I read Termination Shock while I was in the Netherlands last month and it prompted me to take a special trip to see the Maeslantkering in person: a pair of horizontal, Eiffel-Tower-sized arms on 10m bearings that shut out the sea. It didn’t disappoint!
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=maeslantkering&user_id=37996580417%40N01&view_all=1
And because this is a Stephenson novel, there’s a lot of wild action scenes in it, too. Books about armaments tend to bore me stuporous, but not Stephenson’s. The extended gun-battle at the end of REAMDE is both highly technical and incredibly exciting:
https://memex.craphound.com/2011/09/14/stephensons-reamde-perfectly-executed-mammoth-ambitious-technothriller/
That kind of esoteric warfare appears in Termination Shock, too. One character — “the drone ranger” — is a haunted, traumatized veteran whose side business hunting feral hogs with drones turns him into a drone warfare expert, and makes for a string of escalating and stupendous action scenes.
Finally, because this is a Stephenson novel, there’s a lot of political speculation. After all, geoengineering is a controversial subject — one that’s so hard to grasp that my own view on it changes from day to day. Books like Oliver ‘s “The Planet Remade” make the case for a reasonable, cautious geoengineering as a necessary part of any climate plan:
https://memex.craphound.com/2016/05/04/the-planet-remade-frank-clear-eyed-book-on-geoengineering-climate-disaster-humanitys-future/
But Saul Griffith’s outstanding “Electrify” calls geoengineering “not a realistic or permanent solution,” and paints it as a distraction at best:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/12/09/practical-visionary/#popular-engineering
Meanwhile, in Kim Stanley Robinson’s seminal “Ministry for the Future,” geoengineering is presented as inevitable, even if it might be unwise. Robinson suggests that as nations face existential threats, they will try geoengineering no matter what the risks:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/12/03/ministry-for-the-future/#ksr
In Termination Shock, Stephenson basically fuses all these views. His wildcat geoengineers are straight out of Robinson’s Ministry. They make the same point as Griffith, that we are already geoengineering the Earth, by emitting CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Stephenson also echoes Griffith’s point that the big issue with geoengineering is the winners and losers it creates — cooling the world won’t be a good deal for everyone! Stephenson goes farther, though, pointing out that any mitigation for the climate emergency is a form of geoengineering, from decarbonizing our energy to planting trillions of trees, and each of these measures will produce winners and losers.
This point comes into sharp focus in Stephenson’s depiction of the fracturing of Dutch politics as the country’s far right abandons climate denial and slides right into climate fascism.
This is a brilliant novel and a brilliant Neal Stephenson novel. It’s heavily ornamented and has so many moving parts, and it mixes speculation with sociology and tech with action-adventure. It’s one of those books that will stay with you.
What’s more, it comes with a bibliography:

My dad was on me today for telling him of some news I learnt through Tumblr because it’s ‘not an official source’.
Here’s the thing though.
Is Tumblr an official source? No. Is there a lot of fake news/false information on Tumblr? Yes.
What Tumblr does (or any social media for that matter) is give people’s OPINION on real news. This is especially important since so much of official news can be fake or one-sided or manipulated by people in power to fit a certain agenda so we don’t get the full picture. Meaning, of course, that we cannot take what people say on Tumblr at face value. But if I see something on the news like ‘in America a black man was killed by a white cop in broad daylight’ where do I go to find actual Americans’ opinion on the issue? Definitely not the Singaporean news anchor who’s reporting facts off a teleprompter. VERY DEFINITELY not the American news channel who’s probably secretly pushing some government agenda through her work.
No, I go to the people. The voice of the Americans. I hear the perspectives of the white cops and the black community who have been treated this way for centuries. I read what the other POC have to say about this racism that they have to live with. It may not tell me exactly what the issue is—why did this cop kill the man, did the man pose a reasonable threat that he needed to be killed to save others in the vicinity—but it tells me how the people who live in that community feel about this issue and how it impacts them.
Plus, some things that happen in other countries aren’t reported in local media. If I want to know of the ‘small things’ like some rich billionaire refusing to give up his fancy hotel for quarantine patients or if I want a follow-up story to that one thing that happened six months ago but apparently isn’t important enough to be reported twice in Singapore news, I’m sure as heck searching the Internet myself to find out what happened and why.
Tumblr or other social media is NOT a replacement for official news channels. But it can supplement real news and it even highlights important issues that I don’t think about much but is a Very Big Deal in other parts of the world. I only realised just how rich Singaporeans really are after joining Tumblr and reading all these stories of people losing their homes and being unable to afford treatment for Covid while in Singapore we are still able to live quite safely and comfortable even though Covid. So yeah, Tumblr has expanded my worldview and social media basically can be quite helpful as long as you know how to filter out all the untrue stuff and think critically to piece all the information together. Maybe our parents should start seeing social media as some evil thing and actually have some faith in our intelligence and common sense.
