Build/Buy CC

Recently I found myself completely overwhelmed with the amount of build buy cc I had in my game. I had so much that it was really hard to navigate and find certain items. And so, I decided to reduce my bb cc down by only having items from a couple of my favourite creators. And yes, I admit there’s still a lot of items on this list, but believe me it’s a whole lot less than what I used to have. 

Like my mods list & my CAS resources list I’ve put this post together mainly for my personal use, so that I have one source for all my bb cc when I need to update or find them, but if anyone else finds it useful that’s great too. 

As with my other ‘resources’ posts, this post is a constant WIP and will be updated/edited over time.

Hey! I love your CC and love even more that you share resources for others to create their own CC! I was wondering if you would be able to share or point me in the direction of some wood textures? Like the ones you used on your Garden Stories set?

The C&D expansion has a lovely orange/brown knotted pine swatch (noticeably different to the others) that I'm finding hard to replicate and your garden stories texture is the closest I've seen!

I actually extracted one of the Cottage Living (?) floor tile textures and used it in the Garden Stories set. Also, my resources folder has a couple of different wood textures that I either created myself, or extracted from The Sims and modified them.

this is probably a complicated question to answer, but how is it that you… imply(?) the base colors underneath the neon lighting? like, how do you choose the colors so that it looks like the lightning is interacting with the true colors of the surface of the object? (Sorry, I probably didn’t communicate this very well, please feel free to ignore this ask) I’ve always wanted to learn how to do fancy lighting and have no idea how to go about it T^T

You communicated this perfectly, so sorry for how long this has been sitting in my inbox! I wanted to give it my best shot at explaining. Ok, so I would start out by saying that I am absolutely no expert, every time I attempt a neon portrait I confuse myself. I’m going to be honest with you, when I first started the neon series, I basically just looked at it as using a limited color palette. I wasn’t really considering Cody’s orange paint in red lighting at all, I just used colors I liked to paint him! After a friend was inspired by the series and photographed a Cody figure in neon, I started to look at them more critically.

I paint the armor first with the true colors, and then on a clipping mask above that paint the neon color. On procreate I use the standard flat brush, on any other program you could just use something that has adjustable opacity according to pressure. On Hardcase for example, I put down 501st blue for his markings, and slowly painted over it with the dark orange. I played with how much it strayed from the original blue, trying to find a balance between pretty colors and the viewer recognizing that it used to be blue. You can also take into account how relative color is to each other. The markings ended up being a dark purple, but since they're sitting next to bright oranges that now adjusts how we see it too.

There are definitely some creative liberties at work here, I’m not sure this lighting situation would technically be possible. But as long as it looks “right” to the eye I’m satisfied. Another thing that helped me was to do painting studies of neon photographs. I try to paint without using the eyedropper tool as much as possible! That way I remember more of what color I’m actually using. If you reeeeally want to get into it, James Gurney’s book on color is a good read! I bought it when I first started painting in oil years ago and I’ve continued to reference it over the years.
