October's Dad

I do adore Simon, and I'm all here for him finding happiness and finally being a part of October's life, but I feel so, so sad when I think on her relationship with her human dad, how she struggles to remember him exactly a bit more every time he's brought up -as someone who also lost his dad very young, I can relate- and how he most likely died thinking himself a widower who'd also lost his little girl and how Amy probably never spared him a second thought after. I suspect it'd be heartbreaking, knowing more about their time together, or even about his relationship with Amandine, given he was mortal and she sucks, but I can't help but wonder. His absence is so very poignant and I guess I'm not saying that should change, because I suspect that might be the point. I just hope we learn a bit more about him, when and if Toby ever lets go of that bit of mortality, though Im guessing it's definitely gonna be a tear-jerjer either way. I also wonder if any of Toby's family on his side is still around, and if Toby has ever tried to find them. I don't think she'd forget they (may) exist, but maybe it's just too painful? Can't imagine a way to safely have a relationship with them.

I’m in the middle of re-reading all the October Daye books and I just realized, I pretty much instantly fell for Simon as soon as he reappeared. Here’s this character that did terrible thing because he thought he had to for his family, thought he’d be rewarded with what he needed for their sake, but was being used and abused and corrupted on a fundamental level by an evil employer. And then he’s trying to get better when he breaks free and it turns out he has the potential to be sooo good.

And then I realized, of course I like that. It’s my favorite character arc. It’s the one I poured my soul into when I wrote Arashikage. Except done by an actual professional who’s a far better writer than I am.

Simon Torquill is so much like how I see and tried to write Storm Shadow that he literally feels like my insta-blorbo.

So yeah, I love Simon so much.

And if you don’t know what I’m talking about, do yourself a HUGE favour and read the October Daye books by Seanan McGuire. And everything else she ever wrote.

What does patriarchy have to do with this law? This would apply equally well the other way around - if it was Simon who'd had an affair with a human and had a changeling, Amandine would legally be considered the kid's mother.

But also, does this "all children have to have a say in the parents' divorce even if one of them isn't actually their biological parent" apply if one of the couple had an affair, not with a human, but with another pureblood fae?

And how can it be "changelings or merlins?" If this law applies to purebloods, and when a pureblood and a human have a kid the kid is a changeling, how can a merlin be born outside the pureblood marriage bed? Merlins are the mostly-human descendants of changelings, with very little fae blood.

The patreon story gave me everything I hoped for in regards to the one hanging plot thread I'd picked up on before my bestie who also reads Toby did, which is to say, what was going on with Dianda and Simon's getting to hear & react to the news. XD

Spoilers below the cut.

Toby & Dianda's wee passengers being around the same age is going to be SO delightful! Also Simon can't miss giving us girls, he's just a certified girldad at this point.

The way Pete helped, that Pete's the only Firstborn who could DO what she did for Dianda?! Loved it! I'm so excited to see Simon get the chance to REALLY be a father to his kid.

Love the latest Undersea patreon story because we just came away from Tybalt's POV of Simon being 'wow, he's gonna be dealing with this revelation of how terrible he was willing to be'. And then we actually GET Simon's POV and he's like 'JK, my self-esteem was so low it literally couldn't get worse! Having Titania take over my brain was basically a vacation, because for once, the terrible things weren't my fault!"
