I've been thinking about this book recently and the thing that makes me absolutely goddamn furious about it is. Okay listen. The whole divide is kind of nonsense in the first place because the ghostwriter didn't seem to understand that being angry is Normal for a teenage girl okay but the thing that makes me FURIOUS
Is the idea that "nice" Rachel ended up with the sense of duty.
"Mean" Rachel IS the sense of duty. It's what she becomes so that no one else has to. It's why she's the one who is responsible for David, why she's the one, as early as book 17, to morph mole first. Why she's the one, in the end, who Jake sends to deal with Visser 17. In the very first book she's described as "even terrified... having strength to spare." "Mean" Rachel is what she turns herself into to protect her friends, to be their shield and their weapon and their fearless gung-ho warrior, all in one, and the fucking AUDACITY to suggest that part of her personality is somehow divorced from her sense of duty,
I'm not going to make my point coherently but FUCK #32 for real though
as much as i love book 32 in concept, it's probably the worst thing that ever happens to rachel's characterization because it feels like every ghostwriter after that point read it and their only takeaway was mean rachel

One time I had the opportunity to attend a Q&A with Barry Jenkins (director of Moonlight) and someone stood up, pitched a whole film, and ended it with "anyways have you ever considered making a film like that?"
He said no.
questions at film festival director Q&As are like
"when the main character says she likes bread, does this mean that she likes bread?"
"is this movie based on true events that happened to you irl?"
"is the villain based on a real person? could you verbally confirm the identity of the real person you based the villain on, publicly and on record?"
"this movie reminds me of some other movie. does it also remind You of that movie?"
"this film was shot with a camera. do you think im intelligent for noticing this?"
"did you Suffer while working on this movie? how much did you Suffer?"
"sequel???????????????"
"some of the characters are pretty nuanced & gray. should i Like them, or should i Dislike them?"
and then if it's a "foreign film" you get all of those and also:
"what's it like in your exotic foreign homeland?"
"frightening & disturbing things happen in this movie, does that stuff happen every minute of every day in your exotic foreign homeland?"
"did your Oppressive Culture make it more difficult to make a movie?"

imagine: you're a minimum wage mail carrier. you have to deliver a letter to some guy's house WAY out in the middle of nowhere. the letter tells him he was elected president. the guy didn't know he was running for president. a month later you're secretary of state and directly advising the president on nuclear policy.
this is the plot of the goblin emperor from csevet's point of view.

if you are anti-zionist the most effective work you can do is to ensure your community--politically and geographically-- is safe for jews to exist in. im serious. is your community safe for jews to be in? do you know any jews? if you do, are they scared of you? if you don't, if they are, why?
zionism is the premise that jews need to take exclusive control of our own homeland by force because there is nowhere else in the world for us to belong. that's it, that's the heart of it. if you disagree with the premise, you need to be part of the counter argument: that the jews of the diaspora are valued by their fellow citizens in countries around the world. that the jews of europe and asia and africa and the americas belong where they were born, that the jewish people deserve to belong wherever we live, that we are not invaders or parasites or unwanted guests living on the sufferance of christians and muslims who have a natural right to expell us when we've outstayed our welcome.
i'm not israeli. that land is the home of those who were born there, and i was born in california. i know a lot of my fellow americans right now that say they're anti-zionist but what they mean is they want israel gone and me along with it. and that is, ironically, why there's zionism in the first place.
are you anti-zionist or anti-jew? are we your neighbors or not? if you really want decolonization, get your own community in order. if you want all the jews to just fucking shut up already, you can join a six thousand year tradition of not actually ever managing that no matter how many genocides get done.

"In recent years, there has been a rush on the internet to supply image descriptions and to call out those who don’t. This may be an example of community accountability at work, but it’s striking to observe that those doing the most fierce calling out or correcting are sighted people. Such efforts are largely self-defeating. I cannot count the times I’ve stopped reading a video transcript because it started with a dense word picture. Even if a description is short and well done, I often wish there were no description at all. Get to the point, already! How ironic that striving after access can actually create a barrier. When I pointed this out during one of my seminars, a participant made us all laugh by doing a parody: “Mary is wearing a green, blue, and red striped shirt; every fourth stripe also has a purple dot the size of a pea in it, and there are forty-seven stripes—”
“You’re killing me,” I said. “I can’t take any more of that!”
Now serious, she said it was clear to her that none of that stuff about Mary’s clothes mattered, at least if her clothes weren’t the point. What mattered most about the image was that Mary was holding her diploma and smiling. “But,” she wondered, “do I say, Mary has a huge smile on her face as she shows her diploma or Mary has an exuberant smile or showing her teeth in a smile and her eyes are crinkled at the edges?”
It’s simple. Mary has a huge smile on her face is the best one. It’s the don’t-second-guess-yourself option."

If you see your USA mutual looking at the news and then producing a burger from their pocket and eating it, that can mean nothing good. This is the »emergency burger« used to strengthen oneself in times of dire need, and resorting to it is an unambiguous sign of great distress

i do think that liberal aliens and evil space empires are underrepresented. you see fascists, pseudo-communists, hiveminds (large overlap with previous), feudalists, religious fanatics, etc. but liberalism is not seen as Alien enough but rather as the normal and human way to be, and whenever there's an evil space imperialist power it can't be liberal because liberalism is about goodism and freedom despite, well, the actual history of liberal colonial empires

I love reading fics about OTPs having mental bonds and things like that, but they’re always so profound. It’d be so much more entertaining if they still thought like normal people. Imagine this stuff:
“You’ve had that song stuck in your head for days. It’s driving me nuts, too.”
“Why are you making a grocery list in your head while we’re having sex?”
“Is that really what you think about my ass?”
“Stop projecting so much belligerent boredom. I love this TV show.”
“No, you didn’t forget to lock the door. You can quit fixating on it now.”
“Yes, that sounds much better in your head.”
“Is that really who you’re daydreaming about naked?”
“Less homicidal thoughts about your annoying coworker right now, please. I’m in a meeting over here.”
“It’s coffee you’re craving. Go get some. And bring me some. You made me want it, too.”
“Thanks for the road rage thoughts. I’ll take the back roads home. See you in an hour.”
“If you think ‘knit, knit, purl,’ one more time, I’ll stab you with those needles.”
