Jem: you’re a shadowhunter, Kit!
Kit: and you’re a wizard, Harry!
Jem: oh no I’m not a wizard, but Tessa is a warlock and my name is Jem :)
Kit: BAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
Jem: Kit are you ok? Why are you laughing?
Kit: *wheezing* sorry, it’s just you telling me I’m a shadowhunter, next you’re gonna be telling my I’m a lost faerie prince 🤣
Jem: umm well
Kit: oh really?! Well in that case tell my grandmother the queen that I am awaiting her arrival to claim me as her heir and give me a magical makeover
Jem: I don’t think that you’d want the Seelie Queen to—
Kit: *sigh* I can’t do this, are their any shadowhunters who can appreciate my pop culture references bc I’ll stay with them if I have to associate with the *shadowhunters* at all
Jem: Well I wanted to ask if you would consider staying with Tessa and I? I could help you train with your powers.
Kit: Ohhh I see, you wanna be the Obi Wan to my Luke,, ok ok I could get on board if their are powers involved
Jem: that we have to discover, but I have faith as I have helped Herondale’s in the past
Kit: Herondale?? Wait you skipped the part where I’m a Herondale, that’s like a big name for shadowhunters right? Does that mean I have to pick between shadowhunter and faerie royalty?! That’s like picking between basketball and the musical!! I am the real troy bolton omg 🤯🤯
Jem: oh well, don’t worry too much yet Kit, you have time!
Kit: I have— what? I was kidding, omg were you not?!!
Jem: No, I was not
Kit: OH FU— BAHAHAHAAHAHAHAA

From my understanding, you can eat non-kosher food to keep yourself alive, but the emotional impact would still likely be intensely distressing... And hurting/killing others to maintain your own life is... Not great
Y'know, I really feel bad for any character who is Jewish but gets turned into a vampire

If the Drac Fam got corrupted by Bendy's Ink:
Dracula: Bendy or Tom-like Boris.
I know there's a thing about Jewish characters and horns/Devil imagery, but personality and Aesthetic-wise Drac has ALOT in common with Bendy/The Ink Demon: Tall, thin, associated with darkness and the color black, wrongfully seen as nothing but dangerous murderous beast, a signature toothy smile, kind of a butt monkey, both having been persecuted by humans, both have a mischievious streak, vampires being thought of as soulless demons, try to act tougher and scarier than they are etc. (Plus, there are alot of Jewish coded characters here sorted as things without horns and goyish characters WITH horns.) However, Drac also has alot in common with Tom too: a loveable wolfy damaged grump who's suspicious of strangers. However, I DO have 3 other Borises.
Bonus: He also has some similarities to a more competent, good-leaning Joey Drew as well, who at least one point was thought to be the soul at the heart of Bendy/The Ink Demon.
Ericka: ALICE ANGEL. Specifically, Twisted Alice.
Ok, this one's probably one of the clearest of the lot. Not only does Ericka ALREADY have a strong Fleisher vibe, but she has the duality of angelic charm, friendliness, cheeriness and elegance with a feral murderous and mischievious gremlin side and somewhat unhinged dramaticism. She's unconventionally attractive, knows it, and is more than willing to use this to her advantage - and is something of a soft dom in the bargain who loves to toy with people's heads even if it's not malicious. She also has Allison Angel's athleticism, pragmaticism, and optimism and has a similar taste in love interests. XD She also, like both Alice's, never had parents and delt with abuse/neglect in some ways by their "creators."
Mavis: Alice Angel or Audrey
Mavis has a similar optimism and relative sanity to both Allison and Audrey, and seems to serve very similar roles for Drac that they did for Henry and Audrey: the hopeful innocent that serves as something of a moral compass to the more damaged morally grey Drac. She also has a similar nievite to Audrey and a similar mischievious streak and emotionality, but lacks Audrey's dryness and trauma. Like both Audrey and Allison, Mavis didn't grow up with a mother and was favored by her "father" and is oddly chill with weirdness. Not to mention: Glowing eyes, zipping around, and the ability to drain her enemies and oddly unsettling/secret badass power despite her friendly nature.
Johnny: BORIS
Loves food, a cheerful-yet-easily-scared good boi, oddly chill with weirdness, loyal as bleep, clashes with his opposite Drac but genuinely likes him as a friend/father-in-law, a surprisingly brave risk taker despite being the least powerful and scary of the group, loves dancing and plays an instrument, something of a slacker, possible Jewish coding... it's perfect.
Dennis: Also Boris.
Taking more after his father and nearly ending up humany, the shy quiet and sensitive yet adorably loveable Dennis strikes me as another Boris. Lile Buddy, both he and Johnny are also chronologically 2 of the youngest here and are both Jewish coded.
Abraham: Bendy, Alice, Dudley, or Bertrum
Dunno if this is a bit on the nose, but him ending up as something with horns would be hilariously appropriate. Bendy kinda comes from his horns and his status as Drac's rival and evil counterpart, Alice is because of his thought he was doing something good for humanity, Dudley for his mechanical aspects, sea association, and similarity in personality and motive to Wilson. And Bertrum...well, he is mostly head and machine XD
Vlad: BENDY
A surprisingly easy one, but with his mischievious/scary somewhat irresponsible nature and secret soft side, not to mention technical villain status for a bit there, I feel Bendy works pretty well for him.
Simon: Boris or Swollen Searcher
I mainly see Simon as a Boris, perhaps with something of a Brute Boris bent. He's a big strong guy and secretly quite dangerous, but most of the time he's a shy sweetheart. He's much like a tougher, more pragmatic and less sheltered version of Dennis. However, his large size also works well for Swollen Searchers.
Lucy: Bendy, Alice, or in @lovelylivelyv 's AU: Jack Nephalem
Being Ericka and Drac's daughter, Lucy has aspects of both Bendy and Alice. She's a mischievious chaos gremlin who takes pride in her monstrosity and power, but is also charming and elegant and generally both braver and not as ruthless as her parents and something of a rebel. Kind of similar in personality and concept to @lovelylivelyv 's chaotic good Bent Halos ship child oc Jack Nephalem - who in Original canon, was an unused character born from the ink machine and the soul of Wally Franks. In canon, Lucy would probably be closest to Bendy, but I like the idea of the mischievious Dhampirica being a Jack in the universe this is possible.

Tanz der Vampire, Hamburg, 21.12.23, 19:30
Tumblr media
Graf von Krolock - Rob Fowler
Professor Abronsius - Till Jochheim
Alfred - Vincent Van Gorp
Chagal - Oleg Krasovitskii
Herbert - Jonas Steppe
Koukol - Alexander Ruttig
Sarah - Sandra Bitterli
Magda - Anja Backus
Rebecca - Carina Nopp
Tanzsolisten: Paolo Valenti / Andrea Giola / Kezia Coulson
Gesangssolisten: Lorenzo Di Girolamo / Simon Loughton
Ensemble: Jessie Vos, Frederik Stuhllemmer, Keny Oslen, Ian Vrolijk, Artem Salastelnyk, Demi Hubers, Nicole Klünsner, Rachel Bahler, Anne Hoth, Carina Fitzi, Chloe Lee Hill, Alice Giammerioli, Ginevra Serra Cassano
Orchester: Stage Operettenhaus, Dirigent: Martin Gallery
I had such a good time. I'm dumping my thoughts behind the readmore.
Everyone was fantastic, I was really curious to hear Rob Fowler as the new von Krolock and Anja Backus as Magda live especially.
The stage in Hamburg appeared a bit narrow compared to what I've seen online from other shows, I was a bit nervous with all the capes flying around during Rote Stiefel. During Einladung zum Ball Krolock's cape caught on the door to Alfred and Abronsius' room, but it was a quick fix with a tug lol.
I was actually really amazed Sarah took Krolock's hand towards the end of Einladung zum Ball and started to rise out of the bath. And during Totale Finsternis she went in for a kiss (that didn't happen) but holy shit, this Sarah was on it.
I really enjoyed Alfred, but it only just hit me how jarring it is to have Für Sarah right before Die Gruft. One song is about how brave he'll be, but the other how he's scared. Sure you can play it off as funny and ironic, but it tripped me up a bit this time round. It was so charming to hear Für Sarah live. And bless Vincent Van Gorp for having to crawl back on stage again during Tanzsaal to grab Abronsius' helmet he needs for the quick change.
I was trying to keep my eyes on 5 different characters during Tanzsaal, I think I missed Herbert doing something to the Vampire in the blue wig's sleeves. >.< I enjoyed this Herbert. I was a bit nervous because my mother was with me and I don't quite know her opinions, but imo this Herbert was not as giggly as some I had seen in recordings and so Wenn Liebe In Dir Ist seemed less as a joke. I know we as a fandom love Herbert and you may have a different opinion, but the whole 'make the bite attempt look like SA' as the punchline of the scene and whatever Chagal and Magda have going on are the things I warn people about when I recommend the musical.
I also liked this less screechy Abronsius. I thought the sound system could have done his fast songs more justice and it's a shame that this version of the musical doesn't have Abronsius call for Alfred at the very end any more. I love the Finale, but it kicked in so suddenly I missed some of the callback to the beginning of the musical and the tragedy of it a bit.
My mother had clocked that Sarah's family was Jewish with the Menorah during Das Gebet but she asked me if it was a recent addition. I was glad I had looked into it once. As far as I understand it, Roman Polanski (who is Jewish, that's the only thing I am focusing on here) had written 'Fearless Vampire Killers' to get back at Vampire Stories being based on antisemitic stereotypes. The Satire being that Chagal was actually Jewish this time. You want a Jewish Vampire? You're getting one, that kind of attitude. I read that the film was even supposed to have a scene in it where Chagal couldn't have his coffin in the graveyard with the other vampires because he was Jewish. Even as a Vampire he would still face antisemitism, to hold a mirror up to the vampire genre, but this was deemed too controversial by the the editors or someone and it was cut out of the film (which I have never watched, btw. Didn't really want to give Polanski more of my time than I had to, because of the Reasons). So my theory is that Magda and Chagal get pushed into the crypt in a wooden box as an allusion to this cut scene. But yes, in short, the Chagal family have always been Jewish. Whether or not Tanz der Vampire succeeds in being satirical or not I cannot judge for sure. (I had the compulsion to look all of this up because Chagal singing about it's totally OK sucking other people's blood worried me... I wanted to know what place this was coming from)
I was happy that Magda and Chagal got to sing some of the "Was ist dabei..." at the end if Geil Zu Sein ist Komisch outside of the coffin as well. It gave the performers a bit more time visible on stage.
One thing I thought was a bit of a shame was that the mirrors for Wenn Liebe in Dir Ist were rather narrow and in parts obscured by a column so that it was really hard to notice the dance double playing the reflection. We were also sat right in the middle of a row looking straight ahead to the stage. I don't think my mother noticed the dance doubles in Tanzsaal, either. I knew to look out for them, but it wasn't easy to see from the middle.
Sitting right at the back we also got the full blast of the flash lighting that happened during Einladung zum Ball, Carpe Noctem, and the second Finale. It was really unpleasant. If you are light sensitive, I'm afraid this would ruin your visit to the show. I don't know how it is in other areas of seating, but it's worth asking about if you ever do want to see it and are photosensitive in any way.
I had briefed my mother beforehand that the melody she was going to hear was Total Eclipse of the Heart because I didn't want her to be thinking and wondering where she had heard it before and be distracted from taking in the show or nudging me to say what the song is.
EDIT: I just remembered, the switch from Sarah to dance double Sarah in Rote Stiefel in this Hamburg production is a magic trick. All of a sudden there were two Sarahs and I don't even know where she came from. Super cool.
I think I mentioned everything I wanted to dump down soon after seeing it.
Oh wait, I am so glad I got to see Carpe Noctem live. Black Vampire my beloved. Grateful the dancers seem to be able to freestyle to some degree. Andrea Giola didn't do that jump where Black Vampire does the splits in mid air, and I'm grateful because otherwise my mother might have brought up when I used to do gymnastics XD
Made a shirt for going, btw. Didn't quite finish, but it was wearable ^^;;
Tumblr media
Actually, I'm just going to add this thought here too while I'm at it: I'm just so enamoured by the fact that not all performers in a musical are native speakers and will learn the songs for their role in a language that is not necessarily known to them. When I was little, I was told if I want to do anything with languages I should become a translator and my mother kept talking about politics, being an ambassador, etc. But even now I never felt that kind of job is me. I'm not saying a musical performer's job is easy, it's very demanding and takes incredible dedication, but I'm a bit sad no one ever highlighted the language aspect to me. When Drew Sarich mentions in interviews he was sent to Germany with nothing but a lead role and a language coach and now I feel like his German sounds cleaner than mine, or Ivan Ozoghin says he only had two weeks to learn the German versions for Krolock, I'm still so impressed even though I will also learn Japanese songs I like by heart like the little weeb I am. What I am trying to say is: the arts also have space and reasons to learn another language, the musical industry is more international than I had ever thought it was, and there is more to "I want to do something with languages when I grow up" than being corporate. I now have a 9-5 office job that has nothing to do with languages, but sometimes I do wonder what turns my life could have had if my parents didn't have this vision of me in a business suit.

Love ur blog and I have something important to speak with u about.
Alec, Clary and Simon all specifically joined the Clave as high ranking members to change the system from the inside" often times when you discuss this with others on here I see this bit of information not spoken about but it is a constant talking point to excuse the negative behaviors and systematic oppression that the shadow hunters use to maintain power and control.
Clary refers to Shadow Hunter society as a police state in City of Heavenly Fire and then goes onto become a part of that police state.
What bothers me so much about this rhetoric is first of all look at our own world so many people have said you can't change systems of oppression by JOINING the system of oppression I mean look at what's happening with shadow hunter society they basically had another fucking war because of shadow hunter right wingers gaining control YET AGAIN.
It is so upsetting to read these books as a minority because it is so easy to see Cassandra Claire's White Liberal Mentality at play here. It's very reminiscent of JK Rowlings white liberal fantasy being that we don't need to change systems of oppression we just need to get out and vote actually!
Clary submits entirely to Jace and becomes a good little shadow hunter wife who never disagrees or removes herself from Jace's wants and needs. She is suppose to represent feminism and women in shadow hunter society but has only one friend outside of her husband's control (Simon) and Jace spends every waking minute undermining anything Simon says. Example: in Lord of Shadows Clary speaks about hoe bad her ptsd has gotten and was encouraged by Simon to go to a therapist, Jace tells her she's not allowed and he will be angry with her if she does go. So Clary dutifully listens to the man who controls her and does not go. She's been crushed under shadow hunter societies patriarchy.
Simon was a vampire and Jewish man who opposed many of shadow hunter societies ideas around mental health and racist values. He is indoctrinated by clary and the lightwoods under the guise of "being one of the good ones" a manipulation tactic often used on POC. Simon rejects any connection to vampire culture and instead remains as an outside viewer of shadow hunters because he wants to remain their uncle Tom. At the end he "transcends" his old culture and identity and becomes a white Christian man- I mean a shadow hunter and thus is accepted into society because he has completely conformed to their ideology and mind set. Simon is then delegated to the role of comedic relief where he is never taken seriously, must always sacrifice himself for the true blood shadow hunters who retain their status as his superiors and even his own girlfriend is viewed as his superior because she is a "pure blooded" shadow hunter. He's a good little minority who is allowed into the "right" culture because of his continual hatred of his own culture and identity.
Alec is a gay man who hated himself until he finally stood up and spat in the face of shadow hunter oppression. He basically said he won't be comodofied by shadow hunters and will choose to live as himself. Alec then goes onto become one of the heads of the police state and has done next to nothing to further gay rights and freedom of marriage for shadow hunters and down worlders. In fact he and many others allowed the cold peace to take place and then remarks that he is a good guy because hey his husband is a man of color I mean downworlder and there for he can't be racist I mean hateful to downworlders. In one of the short stories, book of the white, Alec goes on a huge diatribe towards Tian, a man working with a powerful demon because he wants the freedom to love a fey. Alec and Magnus take turns telling Tian how despicable he is for daring to do something wrong so he can love the person he wants to love. Meanwhile, Alec tried to turn Magnus into a respectable lover in the eyes of shadow hunter culture by essentially making Magnus mortal because in the eyes of shadow hunter culture a human mortal is better to love than a disgusting half demon. I mean Magnus literally recalls a time in the world where his kind were hunted by shadow hunters for fun and enslaved for fun... sounds an awful lot like chattel slavery which is something many real life black people speak about in regards to dating white people or having really any relationship with white people. And yet here we are with Magnus telling a man he's not allowed to break the law to be with his lover. Meanwhile Magnus use to be the closest thing to a chaotic neutral character we had and now he's completely conformed to the cultural morality of his lovers culture. Magnus isn't even accepted by shadow hunter society and will never be as "lucky" as Simon. Alec has basically become a gay for republican telling other shadow hunter downworlder couples that they're being oppressed because they're "bad gays" who need to learn to conform better if they want to be taken seriously.
I think about these morals being pumped into children's minds and you can tell me I'm taking this too seriously. But these are the same kinds of morals employed in JK Rowlings writing and we can all see now that those books promoted racist stereotypes and misogynistic values to young children who some of have gone onto adulthood to defend JKR as a good woman because they bought into her subliminal messaging.
Cassandra Clare has said herself that she wrote the original series at a time when she was not the most politically correct. I think the fact that she continues to try and defend some of these choices are laughable. Clary should have friends and a job outside of Jace, clary should utilize mundane medicine and promote these medicines to shadow hunters. The fact that the only form of therapy shadow hunters have are silent brothers (all of which are cisgender men who cannot begin to understand the pain of being an incest rape survivor.) Is fucking ridiculous and disgusting. The fact that Cassandra Clare refers to a racist, homophobic and misogynistic society as being "chosen" by God is DISGUSTING. Simon should have connections to Judaism and Cassandra clare should understand this AS A JEWISH PERSON HERSELF LOL. Alex should spend every waking fucking second defending and fighting for down worlders BECAUSE GUESS WHAT HE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT MAGNUS. It's ridiculous to watch these characters become the very things they're suppose to hate and Cassandra Clare rewards them for this. It's so despicable and nobody ever discusses this and CC fans always try to sweep it under the rug but I won't fucking allow it anymore. Clary isn't a feminist until she actually does some real world feminism and puts herself before Jace end off there is no excuse. Simon isn't an advocate for mundanes and down worlders until he's taken seriously by other characters and is allowed to actually connect with his mundane heritage, and Alec isn't a gay icon until he starts raising up other gay people who aren't totally in agreement with shadow hunter morals.
My apologies for how long this is but it's something that ways down on me that I needed to say.
Thanks for the love, and rants and grievances with TSC are what this blog is also for. ;)
Jocelyn, for example, gladly left the Clave and did not return as active Shadowhunter even after Valentine’s passing because she did not want that harsh and cruel life for Clary, a society with rigid rules and ideas of supremacy over other people. Simon expresses same thoughts, the Downworlders express the same thoughts. The criticism against the Clave and the Nephilim as a whole exists throughout the series, but nothing is made of it. It is merely stated—as if that is enough—and done nothing about for the longest time.
Like you said, Clary and co. join the Clave with high positions (just like that anyway, and because making more sense with the hierarchy is not really what Clare was really into as to world-building), as if that alone sort of excuses it all. Because the Good Guys are trying to change things and in the end do it so effortlessly. As to Clary, she was barely a person to begin with. She had no life outside Simon, Jocelyn, or Luke. She had no friends, no memories of normal life that included anyone else than them. There is a brief mention about an art group Clary is angry to miss because Jocelyn wants them to move away from Brooklyn, to live with Luke. But there is no friends for Clary there, no concrete memories of any kind of having anyone else involved with her life.
The rule about not seeking out mundane medicine is never justified other than with general secrecy. Jace has no arguments for why Simon isn’t allowed, it’s just because it isn’t allowed. Diana has to hide herself and her past because she would be severely punished, but the underlying reasoning is never addressed. I think a lot of the rules exist just because law is hard but it is the law (because it’s more convenient for the story than coming up with reasons), and even though characters question laws and rules and norms that somewhat affect them, there are some they don’t challenge at all.
There is no consistency with the ideologies and values the characters have and hold. Like so many things and aspects in their interpersonal relationships that are left unaddressed and processed, the political aspect to the series is no different. For instance, sometimes the writing acknowledges Jace’s abhorrent behavior, but Clare seems to think it’s enough to say it but not make any corrective measures as to the character development even then. Similarly the Cohort rises while Robert as the Inquisitor (who knows the destruction of their ideology) and Jia as the Consul in addition to all the nameless faceless Nephilim who leave Alicante for Alec’s Clave are unable to push back in any way and fight them before it’s too late to stop others from suffering.
I think it really comes down to the same themes of everything in the series adjusting to the needs of Clare’s favorites, and in the grander scale of things, her favorite people that are the Shadowhunters. I’m sure there’s plenty people find to counter-argue this, find stuff in writing that says different—that Alec does fight for the Downworlders, that Simon still has his own connection to Judaism, that Clary does not conform to what the Clave was in Jocelyn’s time. But I also think that arguing over that is the same as arguing that Will and Jace are not the same character when all of it amounts to no change and the underlying narrative still serves Clare’s favorites.
Like great, the writing addresses some stuff in couple sentences somewhere for the sake of having it addressed, but the way it does nothing for the overarching narrative is the problem (just so it could be argued that all of it has been acknowledged, but it still holds no real substance). A lot seems to be discarded after that so we can return to the programmed schedule that is not about Simon's trauma or coping with it, his relationship with Judaism and having to abandon it because ThEy OnLy WoRsHiP rAzIeL, Clary fusing into the Clave she supposedly despised, and Alec doing everything and fuck all being Consul. I just don't think Clare is that capable an author or that she even realizes any of it.

Simon Lewis Propaganda
Just within the first book he gets accidentally turned into a rat. He's thrown into the Shadow world (the hidden monsters and demon hunters in the real world, usually under glamor) with very little fanfare and by God he does not want to be there. He gets turned into a vampire against his will and was kidnapped and drained of nearly all his blood by the main villain. He's held prisoner and starved for months again later by another dude. Ome of his friends gets kidnapped and held hostage and eventually killed. He had some of his happiest memories unwittingly stolen by a demon. His mother rejects him for being a vampire and puts up stars of david (hes Jewish) around the hluse to keep him out. And more! Pretty much the whole series is just "poor Simon". He's a nerd in a college band and is not prepared to deal with any of this.

Inspired by @bisexualnathanyoung and @merrilark I'm here to give my opinions (that nobody asked for) about every single thing Rob has been in.
The Umbrella Academy: really good adaptation, Klaus is a work of art. I wish there were a billion seasons
The Last Bus: I mean... way too little Rob in it, but it was fun
Angel Dust: nice voice, bruh
Robot Chicken: nice voice, bruh. But also kinda gross
Trailer Park Boys: anyone please hook me up, I wanna watch the whole thing. I've only seen clips, love his observations about Canadian pizza
Young Offenders: love how he pulled this off even when he was sick. I live for the part about being gay and the protest scene is perfect
Mortal Engines: I like the movie even though it was way longer than it needed to be, but what the hell was that hair? Where does it say Tom needs to have 2005 pop punk hair?
Genius Picasso: Amazing, heartbreaking. Really shows the importance of oral sex. Also, please never paint a beard on Rob ever again, that was weird af
Bad Samaritan: PERFECT MOVIE, I have nothing bad to say about it
Mute: needed more Luba. This movie made me hate Paul Rudd lol we need to know what happened to Luba!!!
Song of Sway Lake: Ye old granny fucker! Love this movie, although it's a bit pretentious (sorry, Ari Gold! I love you, but you know you make things too poetic sometimes and that can rub me the wrong way)
Dicky: that was weird... that was a bit odd... love it
Geostorm: the three minutes Rob is in are masterful (I don't care what anyone says, the accent was good), the rest of it is pure shit
Three Summers: LOVE IT, but what an annoying protagonist. I'm talking about Keevy. Roland is awesome and deserves the world. Also, it did sound like Smells Like Teen Spirit!
Fortitude: what the fuck was that? This show sucks balls, why is Dennis Quaid involved in this? Vladek is hot though and I'm grateful for the full frontal nudity. Lots of people seem very disturbed by the scene, but I like it
Banshee Betty: represents very well the moment Rob was living love wise lol
Jet Trash: ugggggggggggh Lee is sexy, everyone else in this movie is fucking horrible. I hate every single character, especially Vix. Girl, get a personality. And someone please give Rob a burger, he's so thin
The Bigger Picture: it was good, nothing too special, but nice
Rideshare: CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE, does anyone know where I can find it?
The Messenger: Literally traumatized
Moonwalkers: really good, extremely funny. Love the cast, love the story, love the fake moon landing scene, love the tiger pigs
The Exchange: That was kinda cute, not gonna lie
The Road Within: PERFECT, as a person with mental health issues, I cry every single time I watch it. Fuck you, Marie, you're manipulative af. Rob did such a good and respectful job, I love it
Randumb - The Adventures of an Irish Guy in LA: omfg that was disturbing, but represents LA quite well
Anita B: love it, my Jewish heart swells with joy, especially during the Purim scene. Rob speaking Yiddish? UGH, SO HOT! He should've gotten the role of Max for The Book Thief
Love/Hate: overrated
Mortal Instruments: the only thing wrong with this movie is that there is no second one. I wanna see Simon as a vampire so bad! Iconic lines such as "I don't remember anything she'd want me to forget"
Push It: um... interesting. Lots of visuals and stuff.
Rituals: hippie fantasy and I'm living for it
In Love With...: it was cool, don't get exactly what the hell that was, but I was vibing
Immaturity For Charity: HILARIOUS! Very few times I laughed this hard
Me and Mrs. Jones: I don't care what anyone says, I love this show. Criminal what Rob did to his hair after the pilot, and Gemma is way too stupid to be a functional human, but Inca is our queen. Billy is way too charming and I can't cope
Accused: well, that was sad
The Borrowers: this movie has no business being that sexy. The scene with the motorbike? The scene with the bed? The scene in the plane? Spiller could get it and he's only five inches tall
Demons Never Die: very bad horror movie with a very bad name, but Rob was good in it
Misfits: PERFECTION! Nathan Young is the king of my heart. He can do anything to me, I wouldn't stop loving him even after he trippled himself.
Killing Bono: love the movie, love the cast, the soundtrack is immaculate (SPOTIFY, GET THE FUCKING SONGS IN THERE!), way funnier than I expected. Who tf gave Rob such a low harmony? His voice nearly disappeared.
Season of the Witch: average Nicolas Cage movie lol Kay is nice, love to see him on a horse. The ending was fucking wild. I wonder who we have to exorcise to end COVID
Coming Up - Dip: that was really good! The social commentary was actually kinda deep and relevant. I like the ending
A Turtle's Tale: Who the hell looked at Rob and thought he was the right fit for this role? I like it, but it was weird.
Red Riding Trilogy: HEARTBREAKING, I wanna give BJ a hug
Cherrybomb: love it, love the accents, very much early 2000s vibe and it makes me feel things. Luke's dad deserved better. Love the way Rob says the word tape in this
Ghostwood: um, what? Pop off I guess, baby Rob. Cool accent. Tim is how I imagine Nathan in the high school arc @seanfalco
Lowland Fell: what the hell did I just watch? What was the meaning of all that? Not a single person I know has a reasonable explanation for anything that happens in this
Rock Rivals: Guilty pleasure. Addison deserved better, they did him so wrong! I wish I could see Rob singing in this, but the boyband dances and outfits were really good
BitterSweet: needed more Rob. The neck kisses are just *chef's kiss*. Liam is such a good guy
The Summer of the Flying Saucer: I will do anything to watch this movie. I will suck any cock, fuck any ass, lick any pair of balls! PLEASE SOMEONE GET ME A COPY OF THIS MOVIE
An Créatúr: Bruh... what the fuck? Good job acting in another language and seeing Rob act as a little kid was so sweet. The big baby scene was at the same time terrifying and strangely alluring, don't know what that says about me. For legal reasons I'm not gonna comment on the scene where he's fed cake
Bel's Boys: pretty funny, love the clothes Max wears lol evil genius got defeated
The Clinic: Robbie, baby, why did you do this to your hair? At first, this looked like the beginning of a porno. Love the vulnerability of Shane and that tummy close-up was gold. They really violated his mouth there
Young Blades: King Louie is so underrated! I love him. Every scene with him is just gold. We really needed a spin-off about him finding a wife and all. Wish there was a ballet scene.
Foreign Exchange: Really good! First thing I ever saw Rob in when I was 9. You can blame this show for everything. So many good memories, it makes me feel hugged.
An Cuainín: does this short film actually exist? I never found any evidence of it lol if anyone has it, send it my way
A Dublin Story: wow, just wow. The subjects this short film touches on and the way it handles them are amazing, Rob was so young and his acting was already so powerful. He also managed to make Clocker very funny, I like it a lot.
Song For a Raggy Boy: what a pile of bricks, this movie is very very hard to watch. But it's a fun game of Spot the Rob. Lefties rise up!
The Tudors: I know his bit was cut, but boy did I spend hours watching over and over to see if I could spot him.

Simon and Lucy strike me as the type to TRY and do a pacifist run (being monsters themselves and their family having been through many genocides. They're also generally kindhearted and understanding rather than violent) but might end up in a neutral run since they ARE willing to fight/kill when they feel they HAVE to. They don't WANT to hurt or kill anyone. They don't generally ENJOY it outside of playful Addams-esque violence everyone's in on. But they CAN and WILL fuck you up if they feel they must since....well, alot of people want THEM or their family dead.
Simon's generally the most dangerous between the two. Lucy is pretty laid back, cheerful, and usually lives by the rule "Confuse, don't abuse" despite her vampiric power. She can be a terrifying and formidable opponent when crossed. She can definitely be dangerous and wild and has powerful magic, including hypnosis. But most of the time she's mostly harmless. However, while Simon SEEMS like the soft hearted shy honest "nice jewish boy" that could hardly say "Boo" much less hurt anyone; there's a side to him that's had to work to defend himself and be scary. A side that's ready to do whatever it takes to protect himself or others. A side that's had to deal with being different than the others. Bigger. Weaker. Less flamboyant. Timid. A side that, once provoked enough, will hunt you down to the ends of the Earth and SHOW you just how horrifying a humany dhampir can be. Often with either a withering glare or a slasher smile.
It takes ALOT to get them to the point of violence. They're not NEARLY as ruthless or morally skewed as their parents. But they do still have that "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us" Addams-esque mentality. Much like Mavis and Dennis, in a way.
Would your OC play the Pacifist or Genocide route of Undertale?

Do your ocs celebrate the holidays? In what ways? If not, what do they usually do?
-creation help
The most interesting answer to this is Simon and Lucy, so I'm going with that.
Simon and Lucy are both interfaith since mom is Christian and Dad is Jewish. Since they were raised with both, they celebrate BOTH Christian and Jewish holidays. Their traditions are similar to ours, but with an Addams-esque monstery twist as well as humany ones.
For example:
• Mistletoad (Mistletoe with a toad in it) from @drericka
• A Hannukah Manora with a bat and monster candles
• Poison toffee Apples for Rosh Hashana
• Vampire-ear shaped hamantachen filled with eye of newt
• Chocolate frog hunts on Passover
• Shrunken heads and spiders as christmas ornaments
• snake garlands
• Honestly most things from Nightmare before Christmas would be perfect for them. Right down to the vampire teddy.
• Black-wrapped christmas presents or other spooky wrapping paper
• Webbing tree skirt
• Twice the dress up fun: Halloween AND Purim
• Spooky candies like Cockroach clusters, blood-flavored lollipops, sugary butterfly wings, chocolate skeletons, etc
Like imagine the Haunted Holiday Haunted Mansion take over but with both Hannukah and Christmas, you kinda get the vibe of Drac Fam holidays.
Also when they're older and traveling around, they always come back home for holidays too.

And so begins the fifth book where Clary continues to have the uncanny ability to make every single thing about herself, Jace, or both. Isabelle has no makeup and looks younger, the suddenly does and looks like a French film star. Alec seems to have reverted back to his “previous” characterization, leaving me thinking that City of Fallen Angels was probably just one big fever dream of major bitchiness.
The story begins with a prologue about Simon who was returned home as he said at the end of City of Fallen Angels. Except he has been barred from the house by his mother with all kinds of Jewish paraphernalia. So Simon tries to persuade his mother Elaine to let him in but she is adamant that Simon is dead and this Simon, the vampire, has killed her true son.
Tumblr media
Starting with the oldies but goodies.
→ No suddenly
Tumblr media
I made this point already, but Simon was never given any reason to doubt the lasting effect of his encanto. Simon just went on, foreboding how Elaine would begin remembering at some point when Raphael explicitly tells him there is no way Simon can reverse the effect of it.
Clary then calls Simon.
Tumblr media
Jace may be gone but never forgotten. And even absent, certainly never not the center of the attention.
So the first chapter begins, and structurally it is chaotic. Isabelle and Clary are hanging out in Isabelle’s bedroom, waiting for the Clave to decide on Clary’s fate as the whole RUSE about Raziel reviving Jace is out of the bag.
Tumblr media
Church exists again because of The Infernal Devices.
Clary begins to narrate what happened immediately after City of Fallen Angels ended.
Tumblr media
What makes the narrative structure weird is the tense change. As you would expect, Clary tells the story in past perfect tense. Things and actions completed and done before a certain point in time. Then, in the middle of the same paragraph, Clare changes the tense to past tense.
Tumblr media
Past tense continues here, as if Clary has just gotten out of bed, not sitting on Isabelle’s and reminiscing this certain moment that has already come to pass days ago.
Tumblr media
The Mortal Sword is painted as this torture device used to pull the truth from the person holding it. It’s a sound device because I don’t trust any of these people, Clary the least, to be honest about anything especially after keeping a secret that proved to me extremely detrimental.
Tumblr media
“And now” finishes Clary’s recap of the past two weeks which could have been executed clearer just by using past perfect tense. It is also ridiculous and unnecessary notion that after two weeks and dozen times of holding the Mortal Sword, Clary can’t help but remember what it was like. Duh? It just happened.
→ ...waited for the Council to rule on her fate. (Paragraph division) Holding the Mortal Sword had been like tiny fishhooks embedded in her skin, pulling the truth out of her.
Tumblr media
→ Losing muscle mass can’t be good for their endurance and performance in battle. Will it have any consequence or effect? No.
→ If there is someone else other than Jace or Clary who goes trough difficult things, it is the utmost importance to note that they, too, are still on par with other people’s suffering. Of course she is worried and losing weight because of the stress but I had to make a point because no one ever gets to suffer more.
Then there’s this mess:
Tumblr media
You couldn’t keep up with Isabelle’s facial situation for three pages.
Tumblr media
→ Clave is the only one/thing furious at Clary. Her and Jace’s actions had disastrous consequences, but none of them are truly felt by Clary (or later, Jace). The narrative treats both of them softly but operates in the area of plausible deniability. Clary felt fishhooks! She knows! She is sorry! She hates herself because of it! She has been punished enough! Clary being interrogated with fishhook-y feelings is not a consequence with any weight. It bears no difference at all. It is there to show that there was some kind of reaction, but that reaction, in actuality, is bullshit.
The Clave also has no reaction to finding where or what the Mortal Mirror is. There is no reaction to their Angel being raised. There is only focus on Clary’s part in this, and even then it is severely lacking. I don’t care what the Clave wants or doesn’t with Clary. I care that not one person in Jace’s life is furious about this, Clary and Jace’s secret having this big an effect on their lives. They’ve lost Jace because of something completely preventable if Clary and Jace had been honest. But no character can find themselves berating Clary (and justifiably!!) because then Clary would actually have to pay some sort of price.
What the price is not: Jace being gone and Clary angsting over it or the Clave being meanies and finding out the truth with force. What the price is: Someone at least saying out loud how could you? How fucking dare you? My son is gone and all you can say is you’re sorry???
→ I complained already that the reason for keeping Jace’s death and resurrection secret was never reasoned nor justified in the writing, in CoG or CoFA. Here’s only what I can say to be a cheap attempt at it. Clary and Jace did not think about any laws. They did not think about feelings of others. They did not think anything at all other than themselves and how this would be their secret.
Tumblr media
Isabelle is the one woman support squad to Jace, when needed, and to Clary, when needed. Isabelle would never reproach Clary because only these nameless, faceless, mumbling Shadowhunters whose presence or thoughts bare no weight do that. What the price is also not: nameless, faceless, glaring Shadowhunters mumbling about Clary.
All of this is artificial. An imitation of consequence.
Tumblr media
There’s been at least a couple of these moments where Isabelle does something nice to Clary, and Clary is constantly astonished because she and Isabelle are not close. All of the moments of Clary and Isabelle becoming closer (Clary stroking Isabelle’s hair like she would’ve her own sister’s, Isabelle coming with Clary no questions asked and having her back) are all made meaningless when every time their relationship is brought up, Clary thinks how they have never really that been close. How are they supposed to grow closer when the end result is always the same sentiment of them not being that?
→ Also, don’t drag Isabelle into this Not Like Other Girls thing Clary has going on. Isabelle has no close friends, they have grown secluded in New York. Clary has actively chosen to be hostile towards other girls. Isabelle has had their backs no matter what. Isabelle being “more comfortable with boys than other female companionship” is more authentic because it was never made a point in her character.
→ Also the use of words boys and female.  → than the companionship of girls
Alec arrives to tell the news on what the Council has decided for Clary.
Tumblr media
How was Clary punished at all? I am not saying more fishhooks, I am saying righteous anger from someone who lost Jace because of Clary and Jace and can’t be angry at Jace because he is not there.
Tumblr media
I don’t disagree but I don’t agree with this characterization, probably solely for the fact that it is Clary’s observation that completely excludes herself and her own behavior. She had a rather immovable chip too.
Tumblr media
Oh, my, my. Parabatai as a concept returns properly, but it has been absent for so long that it needs a reintroduction. Again, because now there exists a parabatai pair that Clare actually cared for and wanted to write about so she couldn’t any longer ignore Alec and Jace’s.
Tumblr media
This is pure showing, for which it is more powerful than any of the ruminating on the simplest of things and blandest of ideas of love pages after pages Clare does with Clary and Jace.
Tumblr media
There is also this confusion. In City of Fallen Angels, Simon notes that Isabelle’s whip looks like golden bracelets: “Loops of gold laddered her right arm. They looked like bracelets, but Simon knew they were really her electrum whip.“
Tumblr media
But previously in this part here, Isabelle is told she was wearing electrum bracelets which I assumed were actually her whip. But apparently not?
Clary, Alec, and Isabelle have agreed that they will go to the Seelie Court together to find out what the Queen wants with the bell Clary has. They go downstairs or somewhere where other Shadowhunters and Magnus is. Alec goes to Magnus and they fall into their own bubble.
Tumblr media
Which Clary then makes about herself and Jace. Nice.
Tumblr media
→ Just as with Kaelie in City of Fallen Angels, Clary has to comment on anyone who has had any kind of romantic action with Jace at some point and how it doesn’t really affect her.
→ And then makes it about how Jace is gone and she is sad.
→ Aline and Helen are just standing next to each other, how on earth are you supposed to tell they are a couple?
→ The final part is just annoying recapping.
Tumblr media
As it is, once again, just one of those things Clary needs to be acutely aware of because otherwise it would be a clumsy reminder, which it now totally isn’t.
→ Just let some stuff go without all this nonsense. Let Alec hug Aline and whether readers remember City of Glass is totally their own business.
Tumblr media
Such a way to pat your own shoulder for a thing you did not do. You have shown nothing, just congratulating yourself here and trying to justify your own bad writing and indifference towards Alec and Magnus as having influence. Again, a facade, an imitation, artifice.
Tumblr media
Oh, god, the Blackthorn eyes have made their entrance. I had forgotten the Blackthorns were introduced here already. In my recollection they just appear in City of Heavenly Fire. Interesting to note that Ty is Tibs. I don’t think Helen or anyone called Tiberius “Tibs” in TDA. Obviously the nickname went through a change before TDA, but it would’ve been a cool point for continuity if it remained Helen’s thing to still call Ty “Tibs.”
Tumblr media
Another thing that was changed, a mysterious sixth Blackthorn sibling that never came to be. Like Simon’s second sibling.

Simon Lewis 🤲🏻
1: sexuality headcanon: 100% Not Straight. i'd say probably bi/pan, but i could also see him being gay as well. 2: otp: obviously simon/raphael 3: brotp: i do love simon/clary obviously but i also love simon/luke and their friendship 4: notp: simon/magnus is so weird to me... i don't think i have any that are major Nos but yeah. maybe also simon/clary, just not a big fan of it. 5: first headcanon that pops into my head: before he was turned, he didn't go to synagogue super regularly. and obviously right after he felt like a monster and he felt like he couldn't ever go again. but over time he grew into himself and understanding that no, he's not a monster. so he reached out to his rabbi and is basically just like, "So, ya know, totally hypothetical, obviously, but what about vampires and drinking blood? Kosher?" and then they talk and simon gives probably too much detail that his rabbi is definitely thinking there might be something Going On. but soon after simon starts attending services more regularly. and during this time simon and his rabbi are meeting and talking more about life and what it means to be a good person and what it means to be a monster (because, well, simon is sure he isn't but not quite 100%) and then at some point he brings someone with him and they're holding hands and after services the rabbi sees simon give the boy a small kiss before going up and saying hi to the rabbi. the rabbi saw and the two talk and basically the rabbi assumes that simon's whole obsession with talking about being a good person and not being a monster was because he's gay and was dealing with some big internalized homophobia. 6: favorite line from this character: "What? Come out of the coffin?" 7: one way in which I relate to this character: jewish, not straight, in love with raphael 8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: i mean he's an Idiot sometimes but not so much embarrassment 9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? cinnamon roll

1. No, not really. Simon and James are on the fat side because of genetics, although they do both have very loving families, and Simon's family is particularly well-off. Though I would not call either one spoiled. Billie, I was trying to make more square-y as she's a computer program, and kind of ended up looking like Sadness, which fits her character.
2. I don't think so. Billie might be read that way as she kinda has a similar physique and personality to Sadness, which has some of the "being fat = sad and unwanted, disliked" and has been through alot of bad things in life that lead to her reserved and shy persona. Though she's been fat since her programming. And Simon is also shy and reserved with a bit of angst to him, including body image issues due to being different from the rest of the family and some fatphobia (though to be fair, discrimination is a big point of HT. And this angst is also part of where his "Beware the quiet ones" badassery comes in.) Though James doesn't really. Then again, he is less fat than the others. However, none are villains or particularly portrayed as ugly or unhealthy particularly.
3. Most of my fat characters are that way through genetics or because I just didn't see that many characters like that. Not much thought beyond that, really.
4. Alot of my OCs are ship children, and I based their body types off their parents or families. I have a number of OCs that either have eyeglasses or will probably have them some point in the future, although not many other physically disabled ones unfortunately. Simon, James, and Billie are the fattest. Meg and Lucy are probably the thinnest. Lily's somewhat curvy.
5. I think so! I've done a wide variety of different characters in my art!
6. Like I said, I have some with glasses or who will probably need them in the future. Alex has glasses (sometimes) and Lily does too. Lily in particular is kind of a break from the "Freckle faced nerdy scientist can't be attractive" idea. But I tend to have more ND characters than physically disabled characters, probably in part because I am (mostly) physically abled myself and the characters I was working with were too.
7. Depends. Lucy, for example, has a buck tooth fangy overbite, large cheeks, ovular eyes, a largish round nose, wavy hair, somewhat warm complexion...and yet she's quite cute and has a goofy charm to her. Simon had dark rings around his eyes and a big body with largish ears, but he doesn't look particularly ugly. Billie is smol and dumpy, but looks cute. Lily has glasses, freckles, and a giant messy ponytail, and yet she looks cool and badass. Connie and Lizzie also have messy hair, too. Connie even has freckles. Aaron has braces as a pre-teen I think. Meg's thin and blue with a giant head, yet she looks pretty cool. Even James, probably one of my weirdest looking OCs with that Penguin/Uncle Fester body that Gru has, has an appealing look to him.
8. I try to. In my OCs, the most ethnic I've done aside from white is Jewish and Chinese, all of whom are mixed race with white or something else. I have drawn black and Hispanic characters as well, though. Thankfully, none of my designs have been called disrespectful yet.
9. Much of the time, I'm trying to blend the characteristics of two characters when making shipchild OCs. For example: Lucy has a somewhat largish nose because I was trying to mix some of Ericka's facial characteristics with Drac's, and he has a large nose. Her brother has a smaller nose because I based his face partly more off Ericka's but with a point like his dad's. Lucy has somewhat pointed ears because her dad had pointed ears, while mom's were rounded, and she's the one who ends up with her dad's vampire powers. She's a bit warmer because I wanted to hide more who the vampire would be and wanted to make sure Simon and Lucy had a good mix of traits from each parent. Lucy has brown wavy hair because Ericka's is curly and blonde, Drac's is straight and black, and I wanted to differentiate it from Mavis' straight black hair. Simon's is curly and blonde because I based him on Normie Pubert. Lucy is more wild and crazy while Simon's shy and reserved, but Lucy gets her personality partly from her non-Jewish mother and there are other characters around that AREN'T like this. Simon's also athletic and secretly the more dangerous of the two due to "Beware the quiet ones" while Lucy actually tends to be the "Looks like she coult kill you, actually a cinnamon roll" type. They're sort of an Ian and Barley dynamic: Wild + crazy and Shy and reserved with the braver one being very supportive of the shy one and bringing him out of his shell while the shy one is the brave one's braincell. Lizzie and Jaren, on the other hand...they got black hair because Jake's black hair trumps Rose's blonde. They probably are a bit more white passing than Jake or Haley since Jake is mixed race Chinese and Rose is white. Their eyes are probably a bit rounder, but ypu can still see the ancestry there. Provably both have brown eyes, for example. Jaren does have a thing for his asian heritage and does well in school similarly to mom, and Lizzie has her dad's old dragon skateboard. But neither of them are what I'd call like, geniuses. Lizzie's a wild skateboarder partier like her dad, Jaren's more quiet and reserved like mom. For Aaron and Connie, Aaron I gave a jewish name that fit the "Un stoppable" pun. Connie has freckles from both sides. She has messy hair like her dad due to having a similar personality, but Aaron's more slicked up like mom and the Tweebs. Connie is kinda a similar goofy klutz to her dad, though Aaron's more a good natured capable athletic like his mom. Ron kinda doesn't have as much of the stereotypical ethnic things going on with him aside from the goofy little guy sidekick thing. Lily, well, aside from the name there's the black jessy hair like her dad's and freckles. She's got her mom's sass and her dad's intelligence and ego from both sides, but there's a softer, dorkier side too. And I do try and research as well. Thankfully I don't think any of them really hit the negative stereotypes that much, I don't think.
10. I did kinda mix Shego's aesthetic into Lily, partly because we rarely get to see female mad scientists BE cool and sexy. Often they're portrayed as more nerdy if done at all. But at the same time, her look is very practical. Her lab coat looks good on her, but it looks like a lab coat. Just with her mom's harliquen pattern and a Supreme one Cape. She's got glasses and freckles and her hair's done up in a giant ponytail, but she makes mad science look good. That said, she's NOT promiscuous. She's generally more focused on science and villainy than finding a BF (though I did used to ship her with a friend's OC.)
Lucy kinda gets an honorable mention. She's a bit more on the thin side, but has a bit of her mom's curviness in there. She's a female vamp like her half sister, and her mother had a femme fatale aesthetic, so she's got some of that. Charm, Elegance and grace kinda go with the vampire territory a little bit. And unlike her nephew, she can hypnotize. But while she has the charm and dramatics, she's not your usual sexy vamp and indeed probably would dislike the rep her species gets. I've considered making her aspec. She's more a mischievious chaos gremlin than a seductress.
11. Simon kind of is. Though I feel it's more about the discrimination people of different body types can face and how that affects them...which since he's from HT which HAS a big anti-discrimination moral, it makes sense. I HAVE compared him to bees (big and stripey) and Ericka does call him her little potato baby affectionately. However, I also associate him with Guppies, piranhas, sharks, and sea monsters. He does have a fascination with Krakens, but that's because A. He thinks they're neat and B. I thought it'd be funny since his Great Great Grandpa released a kraken for monster genocide, that he'd actually have a genuine interest in learning about them. (Plus, it plays back to Wednesday having a fascination with Death at Sea and the Bermuda Triangle.) However, he also likes Gillmen, Creatures from the Black Lagoon, Loch Ness Monster, Sea Serpents and the like. Billie's had less to do with her appearance, and what I can remember I gave her pokemon like an Alolan Vulpix and an Absol. As for James...the fattest association I can think of for him is a Minion and perhaps a Hypno, though that was because of the nose.
12. Actually I'd say a number of my thin characters AREN'T what I'd call conventionally attractive. Lily has glasses and freckles and a giant messy ponytail, Lucy has a goofy look and fangy overbite. Meg has a ginormous head and thin little body. Connie is messy haired and freckled and, like Ron, kind of a slob. She does look similar to Kim but definitely isn't as conventionally attractive. Some are. Aaron, Rrod, Jaren, Jackred, Zed, but...many aren't. Most of MY personal favorites aren't what I would call conventionally attractive. Lucy has somewhat small-ish boobs as her body is kind of a mix between Mavis and Ericka's. Lily has somewhat wide-ish shoulders as she kinda got some of her dad's "Black widow" figure. None of them are related to poor health or eating disorders, though.
13. I guess that depends on your definition of masculine. I tend to like the softer, quieter, more innocent, more intelligent and nice type guys rather than the stereotypical big burly never-shows-emotion-besides-aggression hypersexual types. Those are the kind of guys I grew up around. Which isn't OUR society's view of masculinity, but is in some cultures. I do tend to dress them in shirts and pants and short hair but...I tend to wear shorts and pants and have short hair, and I'm a girl. My boy characters have a mix of feminine and masculine interests, I feel like. I also tend to, in ship children, like to try and flip where normally the boy kids are like dad and the girl kids are like mom, I tend to make the guy kids like mom and the girl ones like dad. I wouldn't say any of mine are weak. They're often cool or badass in their own ways. I do tend to have mine rely on OTHER advantages than merely physical strength. My guys tend to be more brains than brawn compared to convention. But that's partly because....we don't SEE that as much. We don't SEE alot of guys who are more brains than brawn. We don't SEE alot of innocent cinnamon roll guys. We don't SEE alot of guys who get to be soft and gentle and sensitive without them being seen as wimps or somehow being less of a guy for it. We don't SEE alot of guys who take after mom, and being a mama's boy is seen as a bad thing while being a daddy's girl is seen as cute amd sweet. Probably one reason against making Simon Bi is perpetuating this idea that "if you're like this, you must be gay" but then again, we never see any shy Bi people, either. And if I make him aspec, not only would that be close to his dad...but that might be seen as infantalizing.
14. Similar deal with the boys. Many of my girls are chaos gremlins or have large egos and ambitions beyond Romance, which isn't typical. And a number have a mix of feminine and masculine interests. My most butch one is Meg. She's loud and chaotic and a crazy eccentric mad scientist because her dad's like that (and to a certain extent, mom too.) And Lucy's one of my most femme ones, and she's wild and chaotic and eccentric too in her own way. Lily's a mad scientist, but has long hair, feminine glasses, has long black nails, and looks good in her lab coat/villain wear. And she's one of my most ambitious characters, wanting to take over the world one day. Meg's a super heroine. Susan's an adventurer. Lucy's brave and sassy and adventurous like her mom was. Connie's a powerful klutzy goofball who likes Cuddlebuddies and snacking at Bueno Nacho. As a wild ADHD girl myself who's good at math and science and is something of a tomboy and has had many awesome GNC women around me growing up, I feel like my girls are pretty progressive.
Just a moment, survey yourself.
Body diversity edition
[READ B4 COMMENTING: Not all of these are automatically negative by simply existing, and some questions can have very nuanced answers that can't simply be summer up as "Thing: bad. Stop." I'm making this so you can keep yourself aware and reflective on what you do, and encouraging you to learn, diversify and be on the lookout for anything sketchy. You're not automatically a bad person if some of these apply to you, however just be wary of how. Lack of diversity is a design problem. And it can be improved! You can improve! Not everyone starts out knowing everything and many of these can simply be bc someone really just didn't know. That's okay. Don't start stressing, take it like a champ and think how you can work with the situation. Thank you]
- Have you noticed that the characters you make fat have usually if not always something to do with either greed, materialism, their love of food, or eating, or being spoiled?
- Are you using fatness in character design to communicate something unpleasant? Why? Does it really have to be represented or tied to fatness, or are you just used to seeing fat be presented as negative and ugly in media?
- "Why is this character fat?" Why is this character not? Why is this character thin? Do we really need to justify the existence of fat characters in some way? Fat people in real life simply exist. There can be reasons someone is fat, but that doesn't define them. There isn't always some "cause", but regardless of if there is, that shouldn't impact their right to be here and live their lives same as everyone else.
- Could this character design be made more interesting or distinct if you gave them a different body type? Does the vast majority of your characters have the same weight, body proportions and physical abilities? Is there a concrete reason why you make your designs have such similar body types? Is it really out of story purposes, or are you just unable to think about your designs in other physiques?
- Do you know how to draw different body types in general? Have you taken the time to practice and learn? Any art style can depict a variety of body types, it's not a question of fitting, it's a question of the artist's skill to adapt. That can be learned and honed. Yes, you too can learn.
- How many of your characters have physical disabilities? Is the amount simply tied to the fact that you hadn't thought to add any? Disability is also something you can learn more about and then apply to your stories. Yes, even if you're abled.
- Are you only drawing characters a certain way because you think the other alternatives are ugly? Why? And why shouldn't you learn to draw ugly things too? Do you really think these things are ugly, or are you just not used to seeing it? Ugly traits in character designs isn't a bad thing. But it is bad to give your character traits you deem ugly, in order to present them in a negative light. Real people out there have these traits you think ugly. Ugliness doesn't make someone a bad person.
- Do you know how to appropriately draw various ethnic traits? Do you avoid drawing certain traits because you have a bad impression of the ethnicity? Are the traits you consider ugly, actually just traits different ethnicities have? Do you avoid drawing racial diversity out of inexperience, or are you just nervous to make a mistake? These things can also be learned. Yes, even if you're white.
- Do you assign your ethnic looking characters certain traits simply because you associate this ethnicity with them? Is this backed up by any research, or are you relying on stereotypes that mainstream media always leans on? Are you aware of stereotypes, or harmful biases?
- Do you only draw curvy bodies for sexual or otherwise appearance based reasons? Do you notice yourself portraying curvy characters more sexually simply because of their body type, instead of something related to the character? Do you automatically make your promiscuous and sexual characters a specific body type? Why? Why not some other one? Why can't another body type be sexually attractive?
- In the case of fat characters, are they usually if not always linked to themes that are associated with fatness? Are all your fat mermaids whales or octopi? Why can't cute catgirls be fat? Do you give your fat characters associations with pigs, cows, or other fat animals? Do you do it with all of them? Are you aware of reductive tropes that implicitly reinforce negative stereotypes?
- Do you portray thin characters in a normal way? Do you have thin characters with small boobs, narrow hips, wide shoulders, bulky jaws or protruding features? Do you portray thin characters as anything other than conventionally attractive? Do you intend your thin characters to always look attractive? Do you only portray thinness in relation to poor health? Eating disorders? A character's health isn't always dictated by their body type. Fat people can be healthy, or have eating disorders just the same as thin people.
- Do you always make your male characters traditionally masculine? Are they often muscular or square shaped automatically? Do you portray fat male characters as either comedic or gross? Are you (intentionally or not) saying something about your male characters through how masculine (or not) they are? What? And why? How do you portray feminine male characters? Are they always portrayed as more sexual, innocent or weak? Why? Do you think this could (intentionally or not) say something negative about these characters? Do you infantilize male characters based on certain traits? Their ethnicity, body shape and size, or sexuality?
- Do you always make your female characters feminine? Do they always have only specific traits and body types? Why? Do you automatically portray masculine women as more aggressive, loud or mean? Why? And why don't you do this in comparison to your feminine women? Are you (intentionally or not) often putting masculine women in a negative role in the story? Why? Did you intend this when designing them? Do you give masculine traits to female characters who are meant to be seen as bad? Even if not intended, is there still a harmful pattern in how you do this?
