Silver suddenly found himself pushed against the wall, Flint staring down at him. “Wha-“ was all Silver got out before Flint’s mouth was on his.                                 Flint managed to occupy them both for several minutes, taking time to run his hands through Silver’s curls, a thumb along his jaw, a palm along his side. Silver couldn’t do anything more than grip him.

(So, this is probably the third, maybe fourth thing I have ever done that involved painting humans. I am particularly happy with the faces, considering it is an area where I have struggled in the past. You can draw something or make an edit, graphic, or a gif set (as long as you can legitimately make it work) for your assigned fic. Silver tsks. “I know a fellow who came back from Verdun like that,” he says. “War is hell.”

Silver is probably dizzy from the walk, even if he isn’t especially tired. He takes a careful drink from his waterskin, closes his eyes, and opens them again. 

The city is still… 

Wrong.

What he’d thought was a wall is actually the top level of buildings, and while from a distance the city had looked as if it was built on a hill, it now appears to have been carved into the bottom of a massive bowl. It’s full of tall structures with more stories than Silver has ever seen. Stairways extend between them, linking what might be the fifth level of one building to the seventh or eighth of another. 

It’s far bigger than it looked from the ground, 

Silver turns to Flint. 

“Not a native tribe.” 

Flint’s mouth is hanging open. He’s composed, really, compared to the rest of them— Bobby is muttering prayers, and when Silver turns back, he sees that Joji’s hands are shaking. 

Somehow, it’s the last one that makes him afraid. 

“We stay in a group,” Flint says. “People could be lying in wait. Keep your weapons close, but not out— we don’t want to provoke an attack if we don’t have to.” 

They don’t walk forward as much as shuffle, staying close together like they’re still stuck in the confines of a ship. 

What Silver had taken for a road looks more like a small square as he steps out into it. Above them, the buildings and staircases rise, but they seem lower— no—  

The lines and angles aren’t right when he looks at them. The buildings look like they’re about to tip over and crush them but they seem miles away at the same time. The ground under them is tilting up into a steep hill even as it remains flat. It makes his head hurt to just look around, and his stump is twinging in time with his heartbeat

There’s a thin layer of slick grime over everything. While Silver can see the footprints of the men behind them, it’s smooth and undisturbed up ahead. 

Flint steps into what might be the middle of the square, and the rest of them follow. 

The men still look correct, and that’s the only thing Silver can focus on, to remind himself that it is the city and not himself that is wrong. The lines of Flint’s face and shoulders are all precisely where they’re supposed to be. 

“Hullo!” Flint shouts. 

It doesn’t echo. 

“We haven’t come for a fight,” he continues, turning a little. Silver looks up and a staircase is swinging for him— he flinches and it’s at least twenty meters above his head. There is no sign of life. “We’d like to trade for food and water!” 

Silence. 

Dr. Howell walks into a wall. 

It would be funny. It should be funny. It’s not at all funny, because until Howell proved otherwise, Silver had thought that wall was flat ground.

“Like hell—” James growled. “Whoever you are, leave my home, before I call the police—”

“My name—” The man rasped, his voice hoarse, trembling, still backlight by incandescent lightning erupting behind him. “Is John Silver. And those are my daughters.”

James McGraw and Thomas Hamilton live a beautiful life with their two adopted twin daughters, Callie and Clio. On the evening of the twin’s tenth birthday, a wild stranger comes to their front door, claiming that he is the father of the twins.

February 28: Sign ups close for authors.  (We’re keeping sign ups open for artists until we say otherwise because we need to guarantee that each author has an artist.)

April 13: Author check in.  You’ll send us a tentative title and summary of your fic, plus your current word count.

April 20: Artist claims!  We will publish an anonymous list of the fic summaries and give our artists the opportunity to claim their fics by sending us their top 5 choices.  Moderators will make final assignments.  Our goal is to ascertain each fic has an artist, so you may not get your choice.  Please no whinging (we love you).  We will email artist/author introductions when you’ve been matched.

May 15:  Team check in.  At this point, authors must send in their final drafts and the artists should already be arting away.  Confirmation will be required for posting date assignment.

June 1:  Posting begins!  Your team will be assigned a posting day in June by the moderators prior to this date and after the team check in.  Let us know ahead of time if you anticipate scheduling conflicts in June.  You will post your magnificence into THE SFBB COLLECTION ON AO3  as well as link to it here on Tumblr and tag it #SFBB2019.
