HALLOW-LEE-N movie review Oct 24th : Dracula has risen from the grave

Reader, this one is kind of silly. This is the 4th movie in the Hammer Dracula franchise and at this point they're kind of going off the rails.

However, I give this movie massive props for the first hero worthy of book Jonathan Harker. Young Paul is ready to do anything to save his girl, including throwing hot coals at Dracula, scaling a mountain in pursuit of Dracula, fighting an entire bar of angry Transylvanians and just plain old throwing himself at Dracula and hoping for the best.

Even after Dracula was drowned last time, the villagers are still so scared of him that they won't go to church because it's too close to the castle. Exasperated, the Bishop scales up to the castle dragging along the local priest to exorcice the castle and place a huge cross on the door.

On the way the priest falls down, hurts his head and lands on a block of ice containing Dracula, and the blood from his wound drips into Dracula's mouth and awakens him. That sets the tone for the rest of the movie, methinks.

Dracula wants revenge on the Bishop for putting a cross on his door, so he hypnotizes/enrolls the Priest to do his bidding.

Meanwhile, the Bishop is going through a bit of family drama : his niece introduces her sweetheart to him and her mother but turns out he's an atheist so everything goes wrong. The lad in question, Paul, works at an inn with a friendly old chap named Max and a girl who is a bit on the "kissing people while they're drunk despite them saying no" side of thing, Zena.

Clearly the movie sets up a Madonna/whore dichotomy between sweet and proper Maria and mean slut Zena, and that sucks.

Anyway, Zena gets attacked by Dracula, and the Priest moves into the inn, smuggling Dracula's coffin into the basement. Dracula orders Zena and the Priest to bring him Maria for his vengeance against her uncle.

Maria gets attacked, the Bishop tries to Van Helsing his way to fighting Dracula but gets a brick to the head from the Priest. With his dying breaths, he requests for Paul to be summoned, and makes him swear to protect Maria even though tragically he cannot swear before god because he's a lawless atheist.

Paul tracks down Dracula to the basement and tries to stake him, but because there is nobody praying it doesn't work somehow. Drac snatches up Maria and bails back to his castle, Paul follows and drags the whimpering Priest along with him.

They arrive near casa Dracula, Maria is made to remove the cross and toss it below the balcony where it lands upright.

Paul, out of options, launches himself straight at the Count and manages to throw himself and Dracula over the balcony, where Drac gets impaled on the cross. The Priest, who in terms of servitude is a huge step down from Klove, finally manages to grow a spine and starts praying. Dracula is vanquished, and Paul makes the sign of the cross. All's well that ends well.

This movie definitely came off as a bit goofy, with ridiculous plot points. However it made up for it by Paul being the best character we've had so far. Dracula has found his voice a little bit. We get a ridiculous amount of close ups of his eyes, which doesn't really achieve anything. 7/10.

WARNINGS & SUMMARY

Lisa and Dracula besides Alucard had a daughter named Asil. One day siblings had a fight and their parents needed to have a talk with each one.

The relationship between Lisa and Dracula kept getting stronger. They cared so much about their twins, Alucard and Asil, both named by reversing their parents' names. The siblings were close to each other but often had a fight about something. That day wasn't different. 

'Mom!!! Alucard said that he loves you more than me!,' the little girl shouted while running to her parents. 

The woman slightly laughed when Asil crossed her arms and stamped her foot. She looked at her husband and said, 

Well, I guess you both love me with all your heart,' she smiled and lowered her voice. 'I'll go for your brother, and you need to tell your dad what happened.'

While Lisa was looking for her son, Dracula was listening about the whole situation with a mischievous child. He tried not to crack up watching Asil fighting for the best compliment for her mom. He really loved all of this. Of course everything was weird at the beginning but Lisa helped him with assimilating to the human world.

'Alucard! Where are you, my little boy?' The woman went to Dracula's palace. The silence was terrifying. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a white tail sticking out from behind a column. A little smile came up on her lips.

'Boo!' Lisa sidled up and spoke into the wolf's ear.

The animal yelped in fear and quickly turned into a boy, who stared with wide open eyes at his mother. 'Mom! Don't scare me like that.'

'I heard that you and Asil had a little fight' she crouched next to her son.

'A little? Pfaff... She just can't stand that I love you more than she does.' Alucard, just like his sister, crossed his arms and stamped his foot.

'I'm sure you both love me, it isn't a competition my dear. The most important case is that I know how much you care about me.' The mother said and kissed little dhampir's forehead. 'Let's go back to the others and talk with Asil, I hope Drac explained to her this situation just like I did to you.'

She wasn't wrong, Dracula had a talk with his daughter about relationships in general. The little girl listened with enthusiasm and understood that the whole fight was necessary. When she saw her brother, she immediately ran to him. While hugging Asil said

I'm sorry, I didn't need to be such an asshole to you.'

Lisa looked at his husband with surprise in her eyes. Apparently the man of her life taught their daughter some bad words.

'Me too. The most important thing is that parents know how much we care about them.'

Hi! I saw on your Drac Daily posts that you read Ooku last year- what did you think? I thought it was a really interesting look into what feudal Japan was/mightve been like under a woman Emporer

Halloa! I'm so glad I'm not the only reader of Ooku. (Ōoku? Oooku? I sound like a fool trying to pronounce it out loud.)

Strangely, it made me sympathize more with Lin Manuel Miranda in creating Hamilton. (<- Everyone in the world is welcome to stop reading right here.)

It's kind of a doomed endeavor, because it's trying to make empire feminist, and you just... cannot do that. When I come at the text more diagonally, poking through for evidences of how you cannot do that (e.g. the way the female shoguns treat their male concubines; much of interest suggested there re: gender, sexuality, power, etc.), I enjoy it a lot more...

...because it's not that much of a political text, perhaps? Every time I snarked or read it harshly I wondered whether I wasn't simply misinterpreting a historical drama. To be clear, I don't know what Hamilton is trying to do-- I've never watched it-- but there are points in Ooku where it seems clear to me that Yoshinaga is here for drama, dress, and all those lovely things implied by a historical manga like this one; perhaps I'm the rude one for expecting deep political thought just because she's won some feminist SFF awards. Frankly, maybe she's not even trying to make empire feminist; maybe she just wanted to write this premise.

And that premise binds her pretty tightly to a variety of ideas: e.g. that female shoguns could and would have acted exactly as the male ones did; that is, that there is no difference in perspective or experience which a female emperor might have which would necessarily lead her to an alternate conclusion. Obviously, that's the point of the series, as it tries to metatextually convince you that real life Japan really was run by women, and here's how that was possible... and I don't think that's a bad thing; it's a lot of fun to write something you know can't be 100% correct or perfect. That's why it made it to the top books of the year list! I think it was one of the best at doing what it wanted to do, and it was certainly a defining series of the year for me. 2022 Roundup still coming, um, whenever it comes.

Also! Under-Glass (the idea I explored in my plotting-a-short-story livestream) was inspired by the fact that I simply thought more could have been done with how terribly ashamed all those men feel to get dressed up as women and be concubines. What's so shameful about girlclothes, hmmm?

So you can tell I quite liked it. I tend to be very charitable with books I've enjoyed in any way (to everyone's chagrin), and I think Ooku has a lot to positively say for itself. I'd also like to have a more robust English-language manga criticism community (<- do these words mean anything?), so we could get more into the meat of it.

Admittedly none of this tells you anything about my awareness of feudal Japan, which is... nil. I'm sorry. I like learning about Japan, and I'm doing it bit by bit, but history and geopolitics have always been my weak suit. I think Dracula is a particular exception because it's so in-your-face about a lot of the things I point out; it's also worth noting I know nothing of Dracula and hardly anything of vampstudies as a whole. I'm just chatty.

(And, yes, it took me a really long time to get into the faux-Shakespeare dialect. But then, I'm no @butchhamlet.)

WWOOOWWWWWW THEY ARE SOO PRETTYYYY OMGGG seriously one of the best lines so far and ESPECIALLY for Frankie, but ill do em all in order.

I think Cleo is the only kinda bad one here, i personally hate the way her hair looks and the makeup is not doing it for me. and what is that silluette??? would she really wear a rounded metal corset (idk what those plastic ornaments/skirts are called so ill call em metal skirts) and the cyan shawl like that?? it just looks so weird and bad. but i love the asseccories o her head, the shoes are so slay and the sleeves w the black bandages are SO chic i love it. but ye i often feel like they dont know what to do w Cleo, it's very hit or miss.

Draculaura looks perfect, it seems the designers know exactly her colour palette and fashion sense cus Drac ALWAYS looks good and this is one of the better ones, like oooommggg it just. is perfect. the metal thing the skirt the pink shaed her hair the makeup the balloon, shoes couldve been better but they are gooooddddddd <<3

I. am SO stoked about this Frankie, one of the best Frankies ive SEEN in g3 like DAAMNN!??? my fave in this line, wish i could buy them but they'll never hit the shelves here lol. LOVE the colour palette of monocrome, blue and pink (plus some silly colours on the skirt) goooshhh its so balanced and perfect, i often dont like it when they give them pink blush but it works ok here, and everything else is so good so it doesnt matter. i LOVE the asymetrical look they went for!!! different length on earrings, shaved side and diagonal hairlock and that gorg headpiece AOIJDIHJ one sleeve (w poofy shoulder, LOVE IT) and one pink glove on the other, asymatrical metal skirt as well and THE PINK LEG?? soo sleek, it's chic it's sexy it's playful in a cool controlled way it looks perfect w their blue skin and cyan shoes THE SHOES ARE SO PRETTYYY and the lipstic w light blue tips and dark blue middle!!!=???? I dont have any attatchment to Cupid as a character I dont think ive seen any of the movies shes in or anyyything. but! really like her design here. the curls and hair n headpeace and lil heart on the lips and like collour pallette in general is soo nice and playful and kinda gorg like it's giving rokokko. it's sweet and cutsy and over-the-top and i love the bracelet w the lil arrow <<3 so yea very happy about this line, too bad ill never see them irl but hoping for youtube unboxing/review vids soon ^w^

4th Anniversary Special; Top 10 Vampires

4 years… Holy hell, it’s already been that long? Might as well do something to celebrate. Now, what’s something that I love beyond all reasonable measure and won’t shut the hell up about? What’s pale, supernatural, and blood-thirsty that I’m hooked for…?

*GASP!* I got it!  VAMPIR-

Oh…Lemme fix this for a bit.

There we go…VAMPIRES! I love me some vampires! Many of you know that I’m a sucker (Geddit?) for these goofy creatures of the night. Hell, one of my own OCs IS a vampire! Since we’ve started this blog with vampires, why not celebrate by countin’ down my top 10 favorite vamps? If we ignore both that stupid Morbin meme and those godawful books made by a delusional, racist cow (That last part’s real, btw), we can wash all of that out by talking about a bunch of silly bloodsuckers for a good few minutes. Better get some garlic and wooden stakes ready, cuz’ we’re about to go full-blown Bela Legosi all up in this mother! This, ladies, gentlemen, and others, is my Top 10 Vampires!

10. Malzeno (Monster Hunter Rise; Sunbreak)

The first (And newest) “vampire” on this list, and it’s not even a vampire! What gives!? I’ll tell ya what gives! Malzeno is rad as hell! While it’s only here because as of me writing this, Sunbreak is just about to come out, and we still don’t know everything about this silvery Drac-drake. Not only is it one of the best Elder Dragons in the series, it has a killer theme (As per usual with most of the themes in MH), and its design captures all of the charm as a regular vampire. I’m not a regular Monster Hunter player, but mark my words, I can bet that people are planning to make a badass cape from its wings once they slay it. Guess it pays to be THIS banging, huh?

9. Count Von Count (Sesame Street)

Yes…I’m including the counting vampire puppet. Try and stop me, PIGS! While he’s not the perfect example of a vampire (Blood-sucking is a huge no-no for a kid’s show), the Count has a good few traits related to vamps. Also, for those who aren’t used to vampire lore, the Count’s obsession with counting actually has some roots in vampire mythology, as one of a vampire’s lesser-known weaknesses is a compulsive need to count things, giving their victims enough time to escape. Is that why he hasn’t tried to attack and drain the residents of Sesame Street? Nah, he would never do such a thing!

8. Wilhamena (OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes)

Here she is, folks; One of the most beloved (And lewded-on) vampiresses we’ve seen in quite some time. What could I say about Enid’s hot vampire momma that hasn’t already been said? People love her that much. Wilhamea here is an example of one of my favorite type of vampire; Tall, with a long dress that covers their whole body, along with massive hair, and well-endowed hourglass figure. It helps that Wilhamena’s a certified MILF.

7. Slayer (Guilty Gear)

One of the classiest vampires on this list, Slayer is a true gentleman. While he maybe a creature of the night, Slayer is actually one of the good guys. Not only does he enjoy a good, fair battle, but he also aids Millia Rage in her quest and gives her helpful advise. Hell, his own wife is okay with being drained, having more than enough blood to go around for him. We can always use a guy like Slayer.

6. Pentasite (Mortasheen)

Yes...this...THING counts as a vampire. Ya see, in the world of Mortasheen (An ongoing RPG project made by the wonderful @bogleech​ ), vampires are monstrous, telekinetic animals affected by an ancient virus from the deep sea. It’s only in the last few eons that these bizarre, blood-sucking beasts started to haul themselves onto dry land. As for Pentasite? Well, I’m gonna let its official description do the work.

“This large Echinoderm mutation achieves sentience without a central brain and amazing agility without a muscle structure. It is one of the few vampires capable of reproduction without parasitic implantation in a living host, as any portion severed from its body will slowly develop into a complete creature. Like a normal starfish, the Pentasite regurgitates its stomach over prey, but no longer uses the organ in digestion. Rather, the stomach is utilized only as a sticky net to constrict prey and drag it towards the blood-sucking teeth.”

Scary, huh?

5. Seras Victoria (Hellsing: Ultimate)

I’m not the biggest anime buff around, you should all know that. With all of that said...How did a show popped out a vampire girl that goes this hard? Seras is the right combination of cute, sexy, badass, and horrifying that I could ask for in a vampire girl character. I could learn alot more about Hellsing, huh?

Also, Police Girl is a golden nickname in terms of comedy.

4. Alucard (Castlevania)

Oh, what. Ya thought that I was gonna follow up Police Girl with her master? You’ve must’ve gotten your Alucards wrong. The Alucard I’m bringing up ain’t Dracula...He’s merely the son of him. Thankfully for all of mankind, Alucard chosen to become a hero, defying his evil father and his wicked ways. There are alot of characters out there who deserve a spot in Smash, and this sword-wielding dhampir is ONE of the biggest. He was already an Assist Trophy in Ultimate, so what’s stopping Konami and Nintendo from adding him into the next Smash game?

...On second thought, the stupid “enefftees” that Konami were making, along with the various slip-ups made by Nintendo may already answered that.

3. Globert (Mixels)

Yeah, yeah. I’m well aware that the Glowkies are technically NOT “vampires”, but since they’re the closest we’ll ever get to a vampire in the Mixelverse, I’ll let it slide. Globert is basically the living personification of “flanboyant”. He hosts parties, sings and dances, he and his whole crew live in a cave on the Mixel Moon, and don’t get me started on how he dresses. If you’re looking for the ultimate party animal to host your shindig, here’s your answer!

2. Duke and Missi (The Vampair)

That’s right, I’m puttin’ both Duke and Missi together for a single spot on this very list! To tell you all the truth, the vampy-ness of these two grows the strongest when they’re together. Ever since their series got the love that it deserves years ago, I’ve been keeping up with it and their antics. I even graduated high school a few days after the season finale came out, and I first discovered the show early on in my freshman year! I’ve come full circle with these two, haven’t I?

And finally, for number 1...

You already knew who it is, so let’s just get down to brass tax, shall we?

1. Vampire Twins (Johnny Test)

As much as V-Mary is my favorite character of all time, I couldn’t leave Susan out of this. Besides, they’re basically the mascots of this very blog! On this day, 4 years ago, my first ever post on this site featured the V-Twins, and I’ve certainly done alot with them since then, huh? From requesting fanart to a bunch of other artists like a weirdo, to stepping up to the plate and starting my own art career out of a want to bring these two back in a big way. I honestly have the Vampire Twins to thank for inspiring me to become an artist at all.

And there have ya have it! It’s been 4 years since this blog began. I’ve been through alot; Hopping onto other sites, picking up art-making as a hobby, making new friends, etc, it’s been a long, wild journey for me so far, and I’m excited to see what comes next. Thank you all so much for reading, and here’s to another 4 years and beyond!

Drego & Beno — Sorry We Was Trapping (TF Entertainment \ EMPIRE)

The idea of Drego & Beno’s comeback promised much but fails to deliver anything on a level of their early albums. Since their last tape in 2019, the Michigan duo moved to California, Drego started his solo career and a reunion seemed unlikely.

Drego & Beno’s first mixtape, 2018’s Sorry for the Get Off, was good enough to establish them almost immediately as Detroit’s best rap duo. And until Rio Da Yung Og and RMC Mike hit the scene, Drego & Beno carried that title. In their songs they made goofy jokes, boasted of coke deals, traded bars like investors trade assets and wrote songs that were fun and catchy. Drego was a nominal leader of the duo, he also produced a few tracks, but it was working in tandem that distinguished their sound and delivery.

In 2021 Drego dropped two tapes, Krazy Man and The Red Print, which cast him in a different light. Longer, carefully crafted songs, with more serious and even socially conscious topics (to the degree possible with the artists as unserious as Drego). More important is that a lack of his sparring partner didn’t diminished the quality of the tracks.

But when the pair got back together again, the result was just short of a disappointment. Sorry We Was Trapping is a quickie between lovers when there is no chemistry anymore. Beno is still good at goofing around with silly jokes like “Put his ass up on the wall, yeah, just like Mona Lisa” or “So many legs hangin' off thе Drac', it look like a centipede” but apart from occasional punchy lines and hooks the tape has little to show. Drego even steps back in the shadow here letting Beno run it, and this might be the reason why Sorry We Was Trapping is so chaotic. Compared to Drego’s brick solid albums, this one is a mess two kids made during an hour session in the studio. On “Rta” they rap: “Hundred thousand stacked in all dubs, it look like a midget \ It won't take me long, give me five minutes in your kitchen.” It seems like they “cook” their songs in the same speedy manner.

A first few cuts on Sorry We Was Trapping are still fun to listen to but the second half is a damn mess. And they should be sorry about THAT.

I have been watching a lot of Bluey these days. My favorite trait of his is while he will sometimes get embarrassed about being silly in front of other adults he never holds back when he is instead embarrassing his kids.

8. Orion Lake from the Scholomance series

Because this kid is insane. And I love him for it. A monster killing machine who has been taken advantage of for it his entire life, but he doesn't really care because all he wants is to kill monsters.

9. Steve Rogers/Captain America from the MCU

I just think he's neat.

10. Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars

This is another hard pick but it's possible the Kenobi series convinced me it's him.

seventh best: juste- this pains me to put him this low bc i do like him and i absolutely love hod. i like his silly furniture collection its a very humanizing element. i just dont think hes all that interesting Narratively. hod is moreso maxims story imo

sixth best: trevor- hmm i find myself appreciating him a lot more than i used to lately? the cv3 gang as a whole is really good imo and i like the idea of him and sypha as a t4t couple... also bonding over how they were both kinda treated like shit until their skills were deemed useful... like trevor being exiled and then Asked To Come Back once he had a "use" has to feel somewhat dissonant to him. mostly i think hes made more interesting via the characters he allies with but i admit theres something there... i am a trevor enjoyer i would say, but there are just a lot of other belmonts i like more. he wouldbe way higher if i categorized him with the other cv3 protagonists though

fifth best: simon- in original cv he is a pretty standard action hero of sorts. HOWEVER most of my enjoyment is from his other game... cv2 is neat and has It Could Be That Deep vibes i think... i like how its kinda flipped with a belmont intending to resurrect drac for a sort of personal gain (curing himself of the curse) but its executed extremely differently from how richters arc was- richter is more of a tragedy whereas simon is a guy having to go to immense measures just to save himself in a kinda understandable way. he passes from town to town, always distant and never staying long, trying to outpace the quickly approaching death that awaits him. idk its just neat

fourth best: christopher (and also soleiyu)- its a shared position bc christopher is mostly interesting via his relationship to his son, but i think about them a lot... belmonts revenge has story potential. It Could Be That Deep. i think it's interesting that dracula was able to reappear so soon because christopher failed to kill him entirely the first time around, so i actually hc that christopher feels guilt that his son was probably targetted as a result of his mistake. soleiyu himself i think would feel a lot of Shame And Angst over the whole debacle since hes the first belmont to rlly bring shame to his family name and also hes 15 and rlly emotional lol. i have this whole narrative in my head about christopher and soleiyus relationship being really distant and fraught after belmonts revenge since theyre both so haunted and them eventually reconciling in the middle of a rainstorm or smth CHhfssfh. this is all headcanons and exists in my mind only but i think about belmonts revenge fairly often

third best belmont: julius- i was debating whether i liked him or christopher more but julius won me over by virtue of having actual dialogue lol and im sure if we ever got the 1999 game id like him even more... i like how his amnesia results in him realizing his role in the eternal struggle at the same time as soma realizing things about his past life as dracula its a cool parallel i posted about recently. he has a cool boss fight and is also rlly fun to play as in aria and he has cool gay uncle vibes

second best belmont: sonia- i just like her!! i think her backstory in the manuals is kinda interesting and i think she would be a good mom to trevor. i like her dialogue in legends a lot, and she deserved better than what she got. getting a game cancelled and being booted off of the canon timeline sucks man

number 1 best belmont: richter- i like how his whole character is like... you know that honorable family legacy this whole series has been building up? time to tear that shit down and show how it can absolutely destroy a guy. i like how in sotn he seeks to "make the battle last for eternity" because thats all this has ever been!! an eternal battle!! over the course of centuries!! hes like, the essence of Being a belmont turned up to 11 by shafts influences, and i could go on about The Greater Themes Of Cycles In Castlevania but i will not, but its very relevant to my reading of him... richters decision to give up the whip and take the belmonts into hiding after sotn (thus ending the cycle... and the belmonts we see in ooe right after this lead normal happy lives seperated from this idea of Being A Belmont its so interesting...) are smth i think about a lot... freeing his descendants from the same expectations that corrupted him... its Deep. and the post-sotn part of the timeline that ensues as a result of him staining the family name is my favorite era in the series. richter is awesome 😎

Something was wrong.

Something was really... wrong.

You knew not what it was, but there was a tension which had been gently simmering within you for the last few days and you had a sinking feeling, low in your stomach and one which you could not shake, that the roiling waters deep within would come to a boil soon. No longer was it a question of if but now was it a question of when and you could only hope, perhaps in vain, that you would be wholly alone when the lid finally came off the pot. Rarely were you able to fully bask in your solitude. Between your daily responsibilities, chores and the endless list of things you had to do, within which every item you ticked off seemed to be replaced with five more, any socialising you managed to do even around that, and your relationship with Dracula, you had very little real time to yourself. You wondered if that wasn’t half the problem in the first place. 

Over the last few days had your body felt heavy, your skin simply too tight. You couldn’t breathe and even the most basic of things were difficult to set about doing or completing. Your hands were unsteady, your grip looser than normal, and it seemed as though you had to concentrate even harder on doing things as you usually would because it seemed that your body was set on betraying you. It was difficult to speak, too, like your tongue was weighed down by your existence, and your jaw ached with how hard you were clenching it to keep yourself from crying out. You could barely speak, but, oh how you wanted to scream.

Yes, something was wrong, and you weren’t the only being in the vicinity who had picked up on the storm which was brewing deep within you.

So deeply intelligent and so intuitive was he that Dracula, too, had picked up on something off about you recently. Or, to be more specific, about your blood. Truth resided in the blood if one knew how to read it, and yours was practically screaming at him as it travelled through your veins, working to supply your body with what it needed to stay alive. You had always been a nervous little thing, anxiety, you called it if his memory served him well, but Dracula had never seen you like this before. Despite having been around for centuries was Dracula unsure of emotions and of the way they manifested within people. He only knew that something was wrong with you, his bride, and the same sinking feeling within you seemed to hold Dracula captive, too.

Neither of you would have to wait very long, in the end, for almost as if knowing that something was coming did your nerves only increase and it was all you could do to keep, for the very least, your body functioning as best as it could while your mind began to scream... though no thoughts were coherent. Your thoughts were a hurricane, words ran and bumped into one another in their haste to cross your mind, and those same thoughts repeated themselves as you lost the ability to think clearly. Your skin was itchy, too tight, your mind was too loud and yet too quiet, and you couldn’t - 

You inhaled suddenly, sharply, and the dam broke.

“Ooh, listen to that. Your heart’s a lively one tonight.” There was a question within Dracula’s beautiful and hypnotic eyes but you couldn’t speak. It felt like someone had stitched your mouth shut and there was no way for you to tell a very obviously confused Dracula, whose thick, dark brows were knitted together as his dark gaze seemed almost to will to look within you, what was happening. With the realisation that you couldn’t communicate, you choked on your next breath... and you began to spiral as with every inhalation did you try to ease the ache which started to build up in your lungs. It was when your blood ran cold that Dracula rapidly approached you, concerned was he with the state of your blood as it rushed through your veins and only further quickened the pace of your heart. When you didn’t respond, he said, “I need you to talk to me, Y/N. What is it?” He was very careful to keep his voice low, soothing; it was the way he spoke to you after you had had a nightmare and you needed him to help you get back to sleep. The truth was in your blood but for once in his very long existence was Dracula unable to read it. This wasn’t fear, or happiness or sadness... this was something altogether deeper and he had no name for it. He knew not what was happening and you did but you had no way of communicating your knowledge to the vampire who was desperately trying to piece the puzzle together. Dracula’s dress shoes made no noise on the carpet but you saw him coming, you saw him, and you reached out blindly for him even through the haze of tears. Your cheeks were itchy with the drying of tears and you couldn’t bring yourself back under control. You gasped for breath and even the callings of your name as Dracula bent to your height, his eyes holding your own, and tried so desperately to bring you home to him did nothing to help you. You couldn’t speak. You couldn’t breathe.

You were too far gone.

Blackness overtook your vision as did the burning of your lungs become too much to take, and Dracula’s mildly shocked expression was the last thing you saw as you lost consciousness in his arms. He caught you before you dropped and with one arm around you to hold you up did he start to tap at your face; gently, gently, and it seemed as though your name was the only word Dracula himself knew how to speak. His hands were cold, dead was he, and after some minutes marked only by the clock on the wall which ticked your life away, you began to rouse in his arms. Dracula swept you up into his embrace and carried you through your home into the bedroom, where he laid you down upon the bed and ran his mind through the things you may have needed in that moment... water was good, it was cold. Bring something for your stomach to focus on. Food, perhaps? But what did you like? Should he put the moving picture box on? All of these questions and more raced through Dracula’s mind but in the end, you made his decision for him as your fingers curled into his waistcoat. 

Your eyes fluttered open and Dracula’s face was the first thing you saw, bent over you was he. You had come full circle and you managed to give him a small  smile. “Drac.”

Dracula smiled as relief swept through him and he chuckled softly. “Oh, Y/N, there you are. I thought we lost you.” A hand curved to your cheek and a clawed thumb stroked along your skin in soothing, slow motions. He was reassuring the both of you in this moment, not that he would ever tell you that. You knew him well enough to know that for yourself, anyway.

You shook your head and slowly sat up, maintaining your grip on his arm. “Just an anxiety attack. I’ll be all right.” 

Dracula sensed a discussion and he sank down beside you on the bed, his cool hand still on your face. It grounded you, as did his voice, and you knew that the worst was over. “That wasn’t ‘just’ anything, dear. You’re a silly little thing, why didn’t you tell me, hm?” 

“When it... when it’s bad, like that, I can’t talk.” You shrugged and leaned into Dracula as you sought him out for comfort now that you had weathered the storm. “It feels like dying.” With his face hidden from your view, for you had not yet learned never to trust a hug for the very reason that it presented an opportunity to hide one’s face, Dracula allowed his eyes to harden when you spoke the word “dying”. He swore to himself there and then that you, his finest and final bride, would never meet such a fate. Death came as a shock to mortals, but immortality would come as a shock to you.

I love how your opnions abt the show match mine so much cause ive been feeling the excat same way abt clankie, ppl describe them as a “fast slow burn” but they just arent. They just go from sometimes talking to frankie sundally being head over heels for cleo then back to barley talking w some the slightest bits of being romantic(by that i mean one shot of them sitting at a table) i truly dont blame ppl for wanting cleuce back cause these two had so much chemistry toghter so many ups and downs that clankie just doesnt have, ive been feeling the same way abt g3 habby too-it feels like we went from heath having a big crush on abbey to sundally them datin, it legit does feel(like you said) that their just catering to g1 fans, same w draclawd which is ironic cause i legit felt nothing when i saw heath ask abbey or clawd ask draculaura for prom despite loving them alot in g1-they just lack the fun dynamiacs the two couples had, draclawd being a himbo x bimbo Romeo/Juliet couple while habby having a jessica & roger rabbit dynamic, all they do now is just blush & hold hands thats rlly it - also honestly seeing frankie try to figure out this new feeling would be a really interesting concept, it would get me more on board w the ship-it could be a nice way to help kids who r still questioning its not something i see any show do they useally have the character already know their queer

(Yeah the club feels like a lowky retcon, its mentioned one time then completely vanishes never mentioned again-the way its introduced is so awkard too they just have drac tell us what it is then cut to ghoulia sitting in one if the chairs-it would feel much more natrual if again like you said it was used to further devlop clankie & to help frankie figure out their feelings, trying to live up to her exes is a rlly fun concept too n could work just as well)

Right, its why i say g1 was better at contextualizing the newer characters like why wasnt catrine at monster high? Oh yeah cus she lived in scaris before! Boom there done , now why did teez never show up before? Hell if i know 🤷🏽‍♂️ but his here now , also im the excat same way-i see ppl bash g1 for having random episodes that dont connect n are just random when it never set up to be a serialized show-its an episodic one, its like complaining shows like courage dont have one overarching story, g3 however DOES set up to be a serialized show, to have one overarching story yet it never allows conflicts to proced beyond one episode , like antoer user said it wants to be the next amphibia or owl house but its far too simplistic to make those show’s sort of story work-i strongly agree they should have just made it a simplistic episodic show w silly monster teen shenanigan like g1-its where monster high works best, the more serialized overarching story sort of format works much better for ever after high

Oh PLEASE do a post for the lore & mythology if ur up for it cus i have so MUCH to say about it n would love to see ur take on it, i honestly hate the whole were-ruler concept due to it being based on a popular misinformation that wolves have an alpha(im autistic & have a special interest in wolves so thats why it bugs me alot) it doesnt even make sense for most of the wereanimals-why would the werecats care about whos the alpha?? Their house cats they dont have a hierarchy and like you said it has nothing to do w the school, it feels like its just half assed into the show so they can have a big conflict, i honestly in general just cant stand the wereanimals-thats the ONLY monster we ever get in terms of new characters n all of them just act like wolves or even cats(clawd jumping onto the wall when scared), the human vs monster conflict is also done so horribly-the monsters r still framed as being a minority like in g1 okay yet the show constantly depicts the monsters as practicing how to kill humans, lagoona stating she has killed multiple sailors in her life & when clawdeens dad comes everyone in the school tries to eat him, the show litrealy justifies humans discriminating againest monsters yet we r supposed to see them as the marginalized ones? Even tho their the ones attacking humans unprovoked? Its giving me disneys zombies energy , also as someone who is a witch-i rlly cant stand drac or the depiction of witchcraft lol they made it a human practice yet dont AT ALL bother takinh inspiration from actual witchcraft, its all just pretty lights n goofy spells n like i get it its a kids show but come on at least try to take some inspiration, you could make witches a seperete monster like in g1 and nothing would change in the story there was no need to make it a human practice

Also yeah i strongly feel you on bloodgood, she got streaked by the “adorkable” beam hard ,how i explain her is in g1 she actually felt like a guardian, she was characterized w how a teen might see their high school principal like (being very intimidating n rule following) in g3 however she acts like an adult sitcom character, shes also honestly such a hypercrite-she almost kills or well “expels” toralei after she “finds out” shes a witch yet just tells draculaura to not show off when she finds out shes a witch (its also so weird how nightmare barley ever appers anymore since in g1 they two were always seen toghter, nightmare was almost a part of bloodgoons design i mean after all she is the headless horsemans daughter)

Also MAN the relief i felt when u noted how stereotypical the characters are-ppl always get upset at ppl saying this n pulling out excuses like “but its not a stereotype some people are like this!!” Not getting thats litrealy what a stereotype is-its taking one aspect some ppl from a group has n applying it to the whole group, its not ppl making up things, like how lagoona is overly obbessed w telenovelas even tho shes 16-telenovelas are watched way more by the middle aged women then teen girls , it feels like they just slapped it there cus lagoonas latina n we ALL know latinas love their telenevolas am i right??(sarcasim) same thing w her having anger issues , why does it HAVE to be lagoona?? Why cant anyone else have anger issues?? Manny is litrealy right there he had that in g1

I also agree with everything you said-i would just add that the issue w the new ethnic backgrounds is they took away already prexisting representation, by that im refering to the wolf family-there was no need to make clawdeen biracial now when she was already a diverse character(being monoracial Black) n its even more upsetting when aside from drac all the other white main characters got to keep their race, their all still monoracial white , i remeber reading the show bible where it says nonbinary is normalized in monster high that it has tons of nonbinary characters-yet thats not what we actually see in the show, the only nonbinary character is frankie everyone else stayed cis it feels even more wrong to me since “frankenstein” is a common insult cis ppl throw at trans ppl, it feels wrong that in this massive school the only nonbinary character is the frankenstein monster

Monster high G3 rant

Watching the TV series and I’m kind of disappointed.

This will be my second watch of season 1, I’m rewatching after the current season 2 episodes.

the show feels very flat in my opinion. They’ve given the characters a lot of cool traits, but they’re used for like one episode and then never brought up, or they only use one specific trait 24/7. Like Frankie in this generation, they have the ability to electrocute, extend their body parts, and they get visions from the people they’re made out of. Specifically they get visions from this one recurring doctor/ scientist. The idea is cool, but the vision literally is there to give exposition about something conveniently. Like when they are trying to solve the puzzle of clawdeens mom, Frankie’s vision just conveniently tells them what to do and how to do it.

In that same episode, we see manny taur. A Minotaur character. And right away we are just told that he’s good at puzzle solving, and so is draculaura! They’re rivals! But this is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard about draculaura being into puzzles, let alone her one sided rivalry with manny. And as the episode ends, she’s like “well you can be the rightful puzzle master” but it feels so flat. There has been no build up to this moment.

Another example is lagoona. In her designated episode, she is rooting for torelai to win the fear-leading captain over draculaura (another thing that has no build up as to why it’s important to her) lagoona explains that torelai is holding a secret over her head, and if it gets out she will lose her status as the fiercest monster in school. But this is the first time we have heard this!! In previous episodes there’s no mention of her being scary or fierce. Or even her super fast swimming skills. It’s just brought up and glosses over with a “be who you are, it’s okay to like what you want! We all have secrets 🥹” but there’s no real character development.

My last example will be the way draculaura is presented in this series. From what she tells us, she has high standards to live up to as a vampire. She needs to look good for her day so she studies endlessly and is striving for perfection. But she also has a love for witchcraft, which is banned in monster high due to its connections to humans. This can be a cute premise, but they NEVER show draculaura compared to any other vampire to show how she’s supposed to act. They never give us episodes where she blows off her friend’s shenanigans because it makes her look bad, and they never really show her dad being so overbearing. They don’t show us WHY humans are hated. And even though witchcraft is banned, whenever anyone finds out about it they’re just cool with it? No push back or anything. The only character to challenge draculaura was torelai.

This all may be very nitpicky, but MH is a character driven franchise. Character relationships with each other and their surroundings are very important to me. I want to feel the so called pressure these characters are being put under. It doesn’t have to be ultra serious 24/7, but issues get resolved within one episode and then rehashed a few episodes later with no further development. Especially with characters like Cleo and lagoona. They have been benched as side characters in this show, and side characters get much worse treatment.

‘The general episode progression is like this - introduce an issue, introduce a high stakes situation that involves the school, have all or one of the main 3 engage in a sequence of fights against this issue(or rapid solving of said issue through convince) - issue is resolved and lesson is told to viewers-characters reset for the next episode.

I know this is a children’s show, but that doesn’t mean it needs to have bad writing, not all kids are high off cocomelon. Kids deserve good writing in their media!
